THOUGHTS Patron Mr. Chan Soo Sen
Honorary Members Dear Member, We wish to announce that the Lounge, Pool Room and Poolside Café are now undergoing renovation works and are scheduled to reopen for your enjoyment by mid-April. The Lounge and the Pool Room will be run by a private body, called Lustre Lounge Pte Ltd, whilst the Café will be managed by SPGG.
Mr. Lim Chin Aik Mr. Peter Chen Dr. Khoo Kay Chai Mr. Low Wong Fook Mr. Tan Hang Cheong
The Executive Committee
The Executive Committee has decided to continue to run the operations of The Restaurant after giving careful consideration to the various available options.
President Mr. Vincent Lim
During this upgrading period, we may inevitably experience some inconvenience but please bear with it for just a while longer as we will soon be rewarded with better facilities! For details on the renovation and the artist impressions of the new Lounge, Pool Room and Cafe, please refer to pages 4-7.
1st Vice President Chairman, Corp Comm & Marketing Mr. Ng Hoo Yin
In the previous ‘President’s Thoughts’ in the December-February issue of Fission, I mentioned that ‘we intend to give back to our supportive members by rewarding them with dividends if SPGG does better than our forecasted profit for this year’. I wish to rightfully correct the word ‘dividends’ to ‘loyalty benefits’, and emphasise that the awarding of it is subject to the approval of the Executive Committee. It is now my pleasure to say that we have recently tied up a reciprocal agreement with Royal Sungei Ujong Club (RSUC), located in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan. The Club provides a comprehensive range of sporting, recreational and entertainment facilities for everyone, including 5 tastefully furnished, air-conditioned chalets. If you are planning a visit to RSUC, please collect a “Letter of Introduction from SPGG” before you go! We are currently still working on expanding our reciprocal / access arrangements overseas, and locally as well. We will update you on the latest tie ups through e-mail as and when they are finalised. We would now like to take this opportunity to extend a warm welcome to the Marketing Institute of Singapore members as our Corporate 1-Year Term Member (25 Open Nominees), beginning 1 March! This agreement is subject to review by both parties upon the expiry of the term on 28 Feb 2013. We are also pleased to announce that we have conferred Honorary Membership to Mr Low Wong Fook, the past principal of Singapore Polytechnic, and Mr Tan Hang Cheong, the present principal, at our Lo Hei Luncheon on 1 Feb.
2nd Vice President Chairman, Member & Student Welfare Mr. Tay Choon Mong Honorary General Secretary Mr. Jimmy Lim Honorary Treasurer Chairman, Special Facilities Projects Mr. Wong Kian Keong Honorary Assistant General Secretary Chairman, Lifestyle & Wellness Mr. Raymond Tay Honorary Assistant Treasurer Mr. Henry Yeo Chairman, Sports Mr. Victor Lye Chairman, Membership Strategic Planning Mr. Gerald Ng Chairman, Membership Services Ms. Cindy Ang Chairman, Food & Beverage Mr. Willy Wong Chairman, Operations Facilities Management Mr. Tham Choon Kin
We once again thank them for accepting our invitation and now look forward to their continuing, invaluable advice in steering SPGG towards achieving our Vision of becoming ‘a Club of Distinction’.

SPGG Lo Hei 2012 The Lion Dance Troupe from SP took centre stage at the Front Lobby on 1 Feb, creating a truly celebrative air as the “lions” pranced about nimbly to groundshaking drumbeats and clashing cymbals just as our Guest-of-Honour and Patron Chan Soo Sen arrived at the Guild to grace the Lo Hei occasion. SPGG President Vincent Lim thanked everyone present for their support towards the Guild, and showcased the changes at SPGG starting with the renovations of Lustre Lounge (former PEL) and the Poolside Café as well as the future plans of the Guild. Concluding his speech, Mr Lim gave his heartfelt thanks to 6 individuals from the 26th Executive Committee – Mr Hoe Lye Soon, Mr Tong Kok Yeo, Mr Chee Kim Wui, Mr Christopher Soh, Mr James Chua and Mr Lawrence Kim for their hard work over the past Term 2009-2011. Mementos were also presented to Mr Chee, Mr Soh and Mr Chua who attended the luncheon.

It is undeniable we live in exciting times. 2011 was marked by major geopolitical events and rife with uncertainty. As investors, we need to recognise the emotional being that the global market is, with a mood driven by several factors.
Investment Outlook in
1. Global economic conditions How Governments are managing their finances, the health of financial and corporate institutions and the people’s wellbeing (reflected in employment figures). If these issues are poorly managed, sovereign debt crises, corporate failures, loss of confidence and high unemployment could result. In the year past, these were largely manifested in the Eurozone and in the US. Europe’s debt crisis was exacerbated by slow growth and a lack of decisive action from the governments. We have the European Central Bank (ECB) and its inaction to thank for the crisis’s spread towards Italy, France and Spain. Unless and until a lender of last resort, or a credible guarantor of the weaker nations’ debts, is in place, this chapter is not over. The troubled nations will strive to remain within the Eurozone as leaving will hurt more than austerity will. Over in the US, the ever-increasing budget deficit that triggered a political gridlock over the debt ceiling will continue into 2012 but should subside post-elections. The debate over raising the debt ceiling is nothing new - it’s been raised more than a hundred times since its inception in 1917. More likely, politicians were using that episode as a tool to discredit the other. It is crucial that the US doesn’t fall back into a recession. Fortunately, employment is improving, while growth and real estate prices haven’t deteriorated.
2. Fundamental company valuations These are currently looking very attractive, gauging by Price/Earnings 12 < MAR-MAY 2012
(P/E), Price/Book (P/B), Price/Cash flow (P/C) and dividend yield ratios. Moreover, many large corporations lie in wait of opportunities to deploy their cash hoards through mergers and acquisitions.
3. Sentiment and expectations Stock markets are right now being led up and down in reaction to rescue efforts over the Eurozone’s debt crisis. Much like the Federal Reserve’s decision to purchase mortgage-backed securities in late 2008, the ECB’s new unlimited 3-year long-term refinancing operation (LTRO) program has reduced systemic risk substantially and should place a floor under market sentiments. Asia and the emerging markets were the main contributors of good news in 2011. Strong growth and consumer spending provided the markets some respite from the pain inflicted by the West. We saw rising real estate prices spark cooling measures in several countries while governments fought inflation aggressively. Resultantly, a moderation in growth, some correction in real estate prices as well as lower consumer spending shouldn’t come as a surprise. This year, however, the urge to quell inflation is likely to take a backseat to the need to boost muted growth. In order to see a brighter 2012, 1. The US must steer clear of a double
dip recession. Statistics seem to suggest that this scenario may indeed be avoided. 2. China must engineer a soft landing in its property sector. We are less hopeful of this outcome because historically, a soft landing in property bubbles is very rare. 3. The Middle East’s revolt must not trigger a war in that region. They account for much of the global oil supply. We worry that Iran’s nuclear ambition could be a catalyst for war while the Arab Spring movement shakes the region’s political foundations. A war could just take place and oil prices will be impacted.
2011 ended with many uncertainties still yet to be wrapped up. Though valuations remain attractive, markets will continue to focus on the hot spots so it might be worthy exercising some caution in spotting buying opportunities. We recommend holding a nimble and well diversified portfolio in order to manoeuvre a possibly volatile 2012.

Hollywood & Oscar Nite • 31 December 2011
O
n a night when it was parties galore everywhere,100 diners turned up at SPGG on 31 Dec for our very own countdown to the New Year in spgg style, themed ‘Hollywood & Oscar Nite’. As the SPGG stars arrived on the red carpet, our SPGG paparazzi were busy clicking away to snap great shots of them with their friends and family. The night started out with President Vincent Lim’s welcome speech highlighting the future plans for the Guild and wishing everyone a happy and prosperous new year ahead. Entertainment flowed throughout the evening with live music from a quartet, a special performance by a Michael Jackson impersonator and some fun-filled games, conducted by the host of the night, Shaq. The game “One Minute To Win It” had the party goers on their toes, whilst the ‘Dress & Dance like a Geisha’ act had them all bursting with laughter as the men dressed up as Geishas had to creatively follow a dance routine that expressed elegance, anger and sadness.

A moment with Santa & Santarina
Look, I won the creative dove competition!
The spirit of Christmas filled the air at SPGG on Sat, 17 Dec when members joined the pre-christmas affair with their families. Our beautiful Christmas Tree was once again decked up with colourful ornaments and lights that added to the lovely atmosphere. SPGG President Vincent Lim kicked off the programme with his welcome speech following which the Christmas Carol strollers stole the limelight and filled the happy atmosphere. The Emcee on the special night, Ann hyped up the crowd in Christmas carol games and engaged the participants with questions on Christmas to win prizes. Soon Santa Claus arrived with Santarina and Elf from the North Pole, getting the kids all eager and excited to meet Santa as he gave out beautifully crafted balloons of candy canes, balloon flower bracelets, balloon poodles and many others. Cameras clicked away to capture moments with Santa, Santarina and Elf! While the adults enjoyed tucking into the exquisite array of western/local cuisine at the business centre, the kids gathered at the Christmas craft corner and settled themselves in, creating a paper plate dove from scratch. Only materials and instructions were given as a guide and we soon saw creative doves taking shape. Glitter and crayons scattered around their work area while they pasted and decorated their doves to a unique and beautiful crafty finish. Riding on the spirit of giving, 41 bursary awards were presented to 3 schooling children of our SPGG members and 38 students from the Singapore Polytechnic with Mr Lim congratulating them on their studies and achievements.
