Getting the most from Spice - top tips ● Check the web site regularly, we update on a daily basis, make sure you don’t miss that “must do event” ● Booking early means you won’t be disappointed by an event selling out (most do come around again). ● Use any credit vouchers you received when you first joined, as these will expire after 3 months. ● Try something different, you never know you may surprise yourself and love it! ● Use the transport share list if you find it difficult to get to an event, most Spice members are more than happy for a bit of company on a long trip. ● Go on the wait list, we do get members cancelling bookings and we can often arrange for extra slots.

Our regular Club/Preview nights are a great way for members to catch up with each other and socialise over a drink in relaxed surroundings, if you have never been why not drop by. They are also a way for prospective members to come along, meet a few existing members and find out more about Spice & maybe join on the night. A Spice coordinator will be there to welcome you & make some introductions and also give a short talk about how Spice works, it’s all very relaxed and friendly. These nights are always popular and its well worth dropping in. There is no need to book and there is no charge, you only pay for your own drinks on the night, bring a friend if you like.

Gloucester Local Meet The Fountain Inn 53 Westgate Street Gloucester, GL1 2NW Thursday 18 Jul & 19 Sep at 7:30pm Reserved area - look for Spice sign.

Diannne’s wee bit Hello Everyone! Welcome to the summer issue of the Spice Bristol & Cardiff newsletter. I think we can say summer has arrived with nearly a whole week of beautiful sunny weather. Lets hope it holds out for the next few months since our summer newsletter has lots of outdoor events to make the most of the sun, plus a few events inside, just in case the clouds & rain roll-in. A group of Spicers have just enjoyed an amazing sunny weekend exploring the spectacular Pembrokeshire coast at the five star Bluestone Resort and will be back next year. By the time you read this many Spicers would also have had a brilliant weekend at our annual Center Parcs event. Our Weekends Away are always fabulous fun as they allow Spice members to get to know each other over a longer period. As usual we have lots lined-up. In July we have 2 days of easy walking in the Malverns, walking in Snowdonia, the South West Cotswolds, Winchester and a bit nearer home we are Ridge Walking in Mid Wales. The River Wye offers a real get-away weekend with our canoe cruise, we make our way from Hoarwithy, through Ross and cross into Wales finishing at Monmouth. July is also the month for the Spice National Dragon Boat Race, where all the Spice groups compete for this much coveted trophy! Croyde bay is a brilliant place for our surfing weekend, we have two dates this year in July and August, this event is always popular and gets booked quickly. You may even get hooked and give up your job, sell your house and live in a caravan on the beach all year, well let’s hope not but this is a great weekend away. In August we are off to place a few bets at the Sherger cup in Ascot, with an option to stay a night or two. Also in August Spice members have the chance to follow Hercule Poirot, Agatha Christie or maybe McMillan & Wife at our National Murder Mystery Weekend at Staverton Park near Daventry, the theme this year is a “reunion to die for”. For the energetic amongst you we have two weekends which should prove to be just the ticket, our Wales Fit Camp Getaway and also our Adrenalin Cocktail Weekend in Pembrokeshire. The long bank holiday weekend gives us the chance to explore Bala on our Walking and Chill out weekend and we are staying in a lovely big house in Bala. There is white water rafting, quad biking or pony trekking. I run this weekend and am looking forward to spending a great weekend with Spice members. Since it is summer our outdoor activities include outdoor archery near Bristol, high ropes at Celtic Manor near Cardiff, Quad Biking, an introduction to Sailing in Cardiff, Open Canoeing near Bristol, Beginners Rock Climbing and a Gorge walking adventure. Take a look at the newsletter for lots more ideas, the web site is updated regularly so it is always a good idea to check that for the latest events. If chilling-out is more your kind of thing how about an afternoon stroll at Bute Park Arboretum in Cardiff followed by a tasty afternoon tea? We are also off to Drewstow gardens near Caewent to explore the grottos and waterfalls. Slightly more unusual we have an African drumming workshop in Bristol with Alphonse whose Afro-jazz band is well-known in the South West. In August our Frisbee and picnic at Clifton Down is a great way to socialise with other Spice members, it should be all fairly relaxed and fun. Party Nights We have a Sizzling Summer BBQ & Disco on Saturday 24 August There is nothing better than a beautiful, balmy summer evening, the smell of a BBQ, and some fabulous music to dance the night away, and that’s just what we’ve got lined up! We have made a change of venue to our regular Bristol club & preview nights, in July we meet at the Pitcher & Piano at V-Shed and then from August we are at the Robin Hood’s Retreat at 197 Gloucester Road. Do come along and support your Club Nights, they are a great way to meet local members. If you live in South Wales we have a number of socials arranged including Henry’s bar in July, two pub quiz nights, Cocktails and a social at Tiger Tiger in Cardiff. Remember you can use the search events tools on the events pages of our web site to find events close to you. Have fun on the events…

Dianne P.S. Here at Spice we are always looking at ways of helping the environment. If you would rather not receive our newsletter please email us, you will of course still be able to view our web site and view an on-line version of the newsletter at Issuu.

Finding events or an event in your local area Do you want to find a type of event (e.g. walking, meals out etc.) or events in your local area. You can do this quickly and simply on the Spice Bristol & Cardiff web site. ● From the home page click the Event button. ● In the Search events block you can search for a type of event by clicking on the dropdown on Category for example walking, parties, Weekend breaks etc. ● You can find an event in your area by selecting Subcategory and selecting your area for example Bristol, Cardiff, Bath etc. ● You can also search on Words, by using Words ● When done click the magnifying glass icon to find what you want. Helele Live Music & Food What a brill first Spice event. I love live music, but it's always even more special when you're close to the action and can see, as well as hear, fabulous musicians giving their all. Brill music, food and company. I would definitely go to the restaurant again and to see Helele again. More events like this please!”

Bluestone Weekend Pembrokeshire. “I really am now in love with Bluestone and Spice most definitely need to make sure it is an annual event. The setting and views are outstanding, the accommodation is definitely 5 star and extremely comfortable and relaxing. I love the Pembrokeshire area so it fantastic to have the opportunity to go off site and explore at your own leisure. The meal on Saturday was amazing. I would also suggest next year booking the sports hall for badminton etc in advance.”

id a s u o Y t Wha Go Ape “I had a brilliant time at Go Ape. I would recommend this event to anyone who wants to challenge themselves mentally and physically whilst also having a great laugh. The SPICE organising before event was excellent as usual. After our safety briefing and training session we were all off, swinging through the trees, manoeuvring ourselves through various obstacles and challenges, stopping only to watch other SPICE folk in various predicaments or simply flying through the air. I really did have a great laugh. The price was also very reasonable for a good few hours of fun and adventure. Many thanks.” “Company great, amazing time!”

ts n e v E t n ce about Re

Falconry Half-day experience “The falconry half day was absolutely fabulous. Seeing the birds so close up, having them on our fist, and seeing them going through their paces was a really unusual and thrilling experience. Our guide, the falconer was so friendly and informative, he made the whole experience very personal and interesting. I would heartily recommend it. The centre was beautiful and in a gorgeous setting. Lunch was excellent, and the cream tea at the end was a perfect ending of a lovely day.”

Malvern Hills Easy 2 Day Walking weekend

Fri 5th Jul 2013 - Sun 7th Jul 2013 The Abbey Hotel, Great Malvern (WR14 3ET) Arrive from 4.00p.m. £189 Member Twin Share, £229 Member Single (Deposit £40) Includes 2 nights bed, breakfast and evening meal, 2 picnic lunches, 2 days guided walking) The nearest station is Great Malvern a ten minute walk from the hotel.

The area: The Malvern Hills dramatically rise out of the landscape dividing the counties of Herefordshire and Worcestershire with the rolling hills and fields of Herefordshire to the West and the flatter plains of the Severn Valley to the East. The highest point is the Worcestershire Beacon (425m). The Malvern Hills have many springs and fountains flowing from outlets all around them, and we visit St Ann's Well on one of our walks. Malvern is a small pretty town surrounded by the beautiful Worcestershire countryside famous for its Spring Water, Elgar and Morgan cars. Accommodation: We will be staying in the Abbey Hotel, a three star Sarova hotel right in the centre of Great Malvern (www.sarova.co.uk) offering great accommodation and superb food. All rooms are en suite and have tea and coffee making facilities, hair dryers, colour TVs, radio alarm and direct dial telephones. Walks: There will be a choice of walks on Saturday and Sunday. The shorter walks will be around 6-7 miles and the longer walks around 9-12 miles. The area is superb and the Malvern Hills offer some truly rewarding walking with great views over the Worcestershire countryside and beyond. As well as the hills we take in part of the Worcestershire Way and find one of the many wells from which the famous Malvern Spring Water originates. Walks are undulating and involve uphill climbs some steep at times offering fantastic views of the countryside around us. We walk straight from the hotel on Saturday so your cars can have a rest and on Sunday we take a fifteen-minute drive to the start of the walk. The area is hilly but we will take them at a relaxed pace to take in the fantastic views and the weekend is designed to be flexible and fun. Rest assured Steve & Jackie, from Ventura will tailor the programme to suit the conditions and the group. Date: Place: Cost:

Our Spice Host will be there to welcome you and help with the introductions. If you are new to Spice this is a great way to find out more about the group and meet some of the local members. This evening we meet at Antix Café Bar where we will enjoy some sharing platters. For those night owls in the group, club life kicks off around 11pm when lights are dimmed and a DJ starts spinning the funky tunes that have made Antix famous. It’s a brilliant night out giving time for both socialising and then strutting your stuff on the dance floor. The Matthew Fish And Chip Supper Cruise

Saturday 6th July 2013 Great Western Dockyard, Gas Ferry Road (BS1 6TY) SS Great Britain entrance by 6.45pm £26.50 Member Includes: 2 Hour Voyage On The Matthew, Fish & Chip Supper On-board Extras: Drinks from Ships Bar Moored next to the SS Great Britain, the replica of the Matthew is one of Bristol’s best known maritime landmarks. This evening we will be welcomed on board and taken for a 2 hour trip around the floating harbour, stopping to enjoy a fish and chip supper along the way. This is a superb opportunity to experience how life would have been aboard ship th explorer John Cabot in 15 century. Over 500 years ago John Cabot and his crew set sail for Asia aboard the original Matthew hoping to trade goods and commodities with the people who lived there. However, he finally arrived on the coast of Newfoundland and therefore was the original discoverer of North America, not Christopher Columbus as most people believe.

Today the replica of the Matthew sits proudly in Bristol harbour for all to see. In 1997 the replica Matthew followed the same course as John Cabot in 1497 and sailed across to Newfoundland. It carried the same number of crew members as the original and took the same and used the same amount of time to complete the crossing. Our trip leaves sets sail at 7.00pm prompt and will circumnavigate the floating harbour with a couple of stops. There is a bar aboard the ship (payable extra) and included in the price is a fish and chip supper. We will be on the water for about 2 hours before returning back to the starting point. Please arrive by 6.45pm at the entrance to the SS Great Britain. There is a pay and display public car-park at this site which can be used for this event. If we have enough bookings for this event we will end up with exclusive use of the ship for SPICE on the evening, otherwise we will be sharing with members of the public.

Refreshed and relaxed we will participate in an agility training session teaching you and your dog how to excel in the 'Spice Agility League' which you will be competing in after a light lunch.

Balance of £25 to club on arrival (no credit cards) Includes approximately 50 rounds of ammunition With extremely tight firearms laws, it is rare to find opportunities for our members to fire live ammunition. However, under close expert supervision, here’s an opportunity to fire Western Style Lever Action Rifles (like John Wayne used!). They are 357 Magnum Calibre, but recoil is similar to that of a full power spring action air rifle, so you don’t need to be built like a cowboy! After booking in (bring photo ID such as passport or driving licence), we will have a safety talk including range rules and weapon handling safety and etiquette. Afterwards, we can relax in the club bar. Important Since this event is run in line with current firearms legislation please see our web site for some important requirements before booking & directions.

Powys (LD7 1LW) 1.45pm for 2pm Tour Cost: £10 Member, £12 Guest Includes: 1.5 Hour Private Group Tour, Spice Coordinator, VAT I realise that this is a bit of a drive for most of us, but is an opportunity to visit somewhere really unusual and unique in the UK. The Spaceguard Centre is located at the former Powys County Observatory near Knighton in mid-Wales. Sited at the top of a hill, the observatory offers outstanding panoramas in all directions, and a clear 360 degree horizon. It is the only organisation in the UK addressing the hazard of Near Earth Objects. NEOs are asteroids and comets that come close to, and sometimes collide with the Earth. Such impacts can have devastating effects – they have in the past and will in the future unless we use available technologies to prevent them.. Our Tour: We have booked a tour of approx 1½ hours with the centre owners. They will explain the importance of the work they do and how they do it. We will see a range of telescopes including a 13” apochromatic refractor.

Gardens, Grottos + Cream Tea Monmouth

Sunday 21st July 2013 Caerwent, Monmouthshire, Wales (NP26 5AH) Dewstow Gardens - Main Entrance at 1:30pm Cost: £16 Member, £18 Guest Includes: Entrance to Dewstow Gardens, Cream Tea, Service, Spice Host Dewstow Gardens is one of the least known of all the attractions in southern Wales, but also one of the most interesting. The gardens are a wonderful place to wander in themselves, with beautifully landscaped paths and decorative beds, artificial waterfalls and man-made pools, but it's Dewstow Grottoes that make this place really fascinating. The Grottoes are artificial - no natural limestone caves here- but they are no less attractive for it. The tunnels, archways, and sunken fern gardens were built in the Victorian era and completely buried around the time of the second world war. It's only over the last few years that excavation and restoration has revealed them again. After our wander we’ll go to the Coffee Cabin for some cream tea.

However, they use a quitaine (or dummy) to take the impact. On arrival you will be given a safety briefing and then you’re riding will be assessed. You will learn basic jousting skills such as hitting the quintaine and learn basic sword and staff fighting. Being a knight also involves being dressed in medieval costume. No real riding experience is needed in order to participate in the jousting, but would be an advantage for certain activities. For safety reasons if the instructor on the day feels your riding is not strong enough for certain tasks, you will make it up in other activities.

Demonstrating various techniques using pencil, watercolour and other media, she will show you how easily you can create sketches and finished works that you’ll be delighted to display. On Saturday we'll begin by getting a feel for sketching and how to 'see' things to paint. Then you’ll discover the many ways to use watercolour, and by Sunday you'll be using your newly acquired skills and techniques to put the final touches to your finished piece of work.
