A real gem of an exhibition is opening at the Royal Academy Sackler Wing in July, when a collection of recent portrait paintings by David Hockney goes on show. Executed over the past couple of years in Hockney’s LA studio, each of the 79 images of friends, family and art-world luminaries, sitting in the same chair against the same vivid-blue background, is painted on the same-sized canvas. Curated by Edith Devaney in close collaboration with Hockney, it is vibrant and full of life. Not to be missed. Standing proud and stately in seven acres of parkland, this one-time Georgian rectory is today a heavenly family home. All traditional façade, front door and brickwork on the outside, inside period features dovetail perfectly with a thoroughly modern makeover, to provide all the comforts of luxurious home living; a heated outdoor swimming pool, spa, gym and snooker room afford all the trimmings of an extravagant country retreat. Yet there is nothing parochial about Belstead Old Rectory. Built originally in 1850, it was bought by the present owners, Mr and Mrs William Smith, 29 years ago. ‘We loved it as soon as we saw it,’ they recall. ‘We had four children and were looking for a “wow” opportunity, something we could settle into and stay in for a long time. The house was impressive and we knew we could make it our own.’ The result is a knockout, five-star contemporary home, rich and refined, elegant and exquisite at every turn. This exquisite barn conversion has created a house for all seasons
Grove Barn, in Norfolk, is a rural idyll with enough to impress all year round. Since its construction in the early 1600s, it has served as a farm, gun shop, shooting range and storage area. Today, it is a superb, four-bedroom family home with the scope to expand. The Barn is a perfect dual combination. There is the original and the new, its timber frame, lovely brickwork and features dovetailing delightfully with bi-folding, floor-to-ceiling doors and French windows that give the home a bright, spacious feel. ‘It’s light and airy, with an open-plan style that offers flexible space for family life and entertaining,’ says current owner Sarah. ‘What was the main dining room is used as a pool room that leads to the kitchen. Then we have a snug at one end and a more formal drawing room at the other.’ The stunning, large, modern kitchen, with travertine flooring and walnut wood island, is the heart of the house, where family and friends can gather. It is flanked either end by a family room and a games room. THE DESIGNER
SPECIAL
Tree houses are no longer just for the kids, as these designs prove
BRANCH
THE NOOK, SURREY This tree house has been designed with summer evening entertaining in mind, with plenty of decked outdoor seating and a sunken firepit. The client wanted a special spot in the garden for al fresco dining, parties and camping sleepovers with friends,
‘We want to bring back the magic of childhood imaginations and memories to people through our designs,’ says Andy Payne, managing director of luxury tree house company Blue Forest. ‘And the more adventurous and outlandish the request from the client, the better.’ Andy, who grew up in Kenya, did a degree in business and design, going on to work in timber framing and construction, both in the UK and Japan. It was a trip back to Kenya in 2003, however, that ignited his passion for buildings in trees. Andy and brother Simon (a director of Blue 20 www.chewtonrose.co.uk
so the structure’s outdoor space was just as important as the interior, which features classic oak flooring and premium-grade cedar lining. To keep the kids busy, the design also includes rope bridges, an adventure trail, a lookout nest and a zip wire.
Forest) went to help a friend, who ran a conservation project there, build a magnificent, sustainable tree platform and suspended canopy walkway, which, as a tourist attraction, would raise money for local schools. Back in the UK, while showing pictures of their work in Africa, Andy realised there was great potential for treetop structures here in the UK. And so Blue Forest was born. Here, Andy talks us through some of the projects that have helped make Blue Forest the go-to name for treetop delights. www.blueforest.com
THE TREE HOUSE KITCHEN, SURREY This tree house, like all our designs (from £30,000) is entirely bespoke, and was created for use as a functioning venue for the client’s gourmet meals company, The Pure Package, as well as a private retreat. The kitchen space that forms the main area of the tree house has an open layout with room to serve, as well as create, delicious dishes.
TREETOP DINING, SURREY This elegant tree house is built around a 300-year-old oak tree, accessed by a wide spiral staircase. Although roofed with nicely weathered cedar shingles, the sides of the structure are left open to give diners a truly authentic treetop experience as they take in the wonderful views of
the surrounding gardens. Inside, a ‘curvy’ bespoke oak table is able to seat up to 12 guests, and a delightful collection of chairs and cushions gives the interior a comfortable and welcoming feel. A wicker basket on a pulley means that supplies can be easily hoisted into the dining room.
THE FIBONACCI, SPAIN This structure breaks all the boundaries of traditional tree house design: the organic shape was inspired by the geometry of the ‘Fibonacci Spiral', a logarithmic spiral often found in nature, such as on a snail's shell. Fitted with a kitchenette, this is the perfect place to enjoy the cool quietness of the surrounding woodland. The tree house is finished with larch boards and features a copper fascia with rustic rope detail. The interior is light and airy with extensive glazing, blurring the lines between the inside and outside spaces. Four decks spread into the woods, linked by over 40m of rope bridges. Halfway along the suspended walkway, a 3.5m-high deck is the starting point for a 23m-long steel slide!
THE ECOPERCH This prefabricated hideaway works in harmony with nature, but still reflects the charm of a Blue Forest tree house. The ecoPerch is flexible and can be assembled among treetops or on the ground. Its innovative design means that it can be used for a variety of purposes – from a guest house to a home office or recording studio. The insulated, energy-efficient lodge boasts low-voltage LED lighting and can be erected in around five days with minimal impact on the environment. A variety of renewable-energy options are available, creating an off-grid accommodation solution. www.chewtonrose.co.uk 21

A prime hilltop location guarantees spectacular views from this lovingly renovated former schoolhouse property
A single-storey, five-bedroom detached dwelling, The Old School House sits atop Pell Hill, surrounded by landscaped gardens and pathways, farmland and breathtaking vistas of the valley and beyond. Built in 1837, it served as a village school for only 40 years before it was handed over to local landowners and used as farming units, before becoming a home. Current owners Michael Thomas and Christian Le Leon bought it four years ago and have transformed it, through extensive renovation and expansion, into the stunning house it is today. They have opened up ceilings to expose the original trusses, installed new windows and insulation, and given it a cool, modern finish. Choosing a neutral base gives it a calm, serene feel, enhanced by large, squishy sofas and chairs; arty pops and splashes of colour bring rooms and spaces to life. The house can be divided into an east wing, home to the master bedroom, and a west wing, joined in the centre by a drawing/living room, which, say the owners, ‘flows very well, with different areas leading from one another. In summer, the doors onto the terrace can be opened and the flow continues outside’. It is this easy flow and flexibility that make The Old School House so desirable. With bags of space, bedrooms and on the dramatic views, a riot of colour with bathrooms, it is ideal for a family and for entertaining, with room aplenty for the changing seasons. They were certainly guests. It also has potential for further significant for the owners, who, before buying expansion. ‘The west wing could easily The Old School House, had long admired it become self-contained,’ the owners from a distance. ‘The views of the skies here say. ‘It could become an annexe for were of great appeal to us,’ they say, ‘and we independent living or work.’ realised the house would have extensive views Each south-facing room here has down and across the valley. DRESS to impress
AILEEN SCOULAR
Indulge your inner film star with a walk-in wardrobe When Carrie Bradshaw finally got the commitment she yearned from Mr Big in the original Sex and the City movie, this fictional fashion icon also became the proud owner of a glorious walk-in wardrobe, complete with glass doors, snow-white rugs and capacious shoe storage. Gossip Girl ’s Blair Waldorf was another white-walled closet queen. Even Hugh Grant – playing billionaire George Wade in Two Weeks’ Notice – had a walk-in closet, brimming with designer suits in a hundred shades of grey. In real life, walk-in wardrobes are a luxury we all love. Socialite Tamara Ecclestone opened the doors to her beautiful wood-lined closet in 2012, revealing 120 pairs of Christian Louboutin heels and 30 Hermès Birkin handbags, and this year sneaker-lovers everywhere sighed over Khloe Kardashian’s dreamy walk-in fitness closet. Designed by Lisa Adams of LA Closet Design, it has neat little drawers for accessories, suede-lined shelves and a mini-fridge filled with chilled Fiji water. And, in Claybanks, a Buckinghamshire property recently marketed and sold by Chewton Rose, the master suite was enhanced by a bespoke mirrored dressing room, complete with floor-to-ceiling cubed shoe storage and a crystal chandelier. Of course, that’s the beauty of a walk-in closet: you design it to suit your specific needs, and fill it with whatever takes your fancy. Most walk-in wardrobes are created within a generously proportioned bedroom, but, where space is at a premium, a spare bedroom can be repurposed as a luxury dressing room. Where walk-in closets are shared, ‘his and hers’ storage areas are a must: longer hanging, shoe storage and handbag shelving for her; double-hanging rails, tie racks, flat T-shirt shelves and sneaker storage for him. ‘In a wa l k-in wa rd robe, every item is given a carefully designed home, which makes dressing a much less stressful process,’ expla ins Ma rt yn Weeks, head designer at Lamco Design, which creates bespoke furniture with a contemporary feel. ‘The whole wardrobe becomes a display case to showcase the clothes you own and love. A nd, as such, it 24 www.chewtonrose.co.uk
becomes a real sanctuary for the fashion enthusiast. Bespoke walkin-wardrobes, much like the kitchen or bathroom, enhance the level of finish within a home, setting it apart from other properties.’ Today’s walk-in wardrobes can also be so much more than a place to hang and store your clothing. Martyn has created walk-in dressing rooms with built-in TV, surround sound, iPod docking stations and luxury seating, while Matthew Brennan at Minimo is commonly asked to create ‘wow’ storage for up to 300 pairs of shoes and irreplaceable watch collections. Your walk-in wardrobe can also be a sensible place for a fireproof safe – bear in mind, though, that the flooring below may need to be strengthened to carry the weight.

Finish is important, too: lacquer, glass and smoky shades of grey are all popular right now. ‘We offer designs from several Italian manufacturers, with lacquered sliding doors, and lacquered panels and shelving,’ says Tina Mahony, director at Chelsea-based Go Modern. ‘They are very luxurious, but eminently practical, too – particularly if you choose sliding or ceiling-hung doors. We also have designs that can be installed in rooms with irregular or sloping walls, as they can be created to work independently from the existing structure.’ Furniture-maker Neville Johnson is moving away from vibrant colour to elegant neutrals: pale greys, inky blues and gentle taupes, with clean contemporary finishes, simple lines and flat-panelled doors. ‘Strong Italian influences incorporating a blend of materials, such as a wooden framework with a high-gloss or painted finish, enhance the overall design,’ adds designer Alan Borra. And, at Lamco Design, dark wood and grey exteriors are also in vogue, teamed with a textured lineneffect interior. ‘We have also been working with oak woodgrains,’ says Martyn. ‘This can be stained to create a bespoke colour and is very popular in a traditional home where a lot of wood is already present.’ Leather is another desirable finish, according to Matthew: ‘Leather and suede can be used as subtle design accents – the drawer handles or drawer linings, for example – or we can create complete dressing rooms in leather, where all the joinery is lined in leather… even the floor and the walls!’ Glass doors are a simple way to introduce light into your walk-in wardrobe, although smart lighting – spotlighting, backlighting and uplighting – will make the very most of your design. Every walkin wardrobe is unique, and going bespoke is the perfect way to deliver your dream dressing room. www.chewtonrose.co.uk 25

GAR DEN GROW?

What will your outside look like this year? Aileen Scoular reveals the garden trends for 2016
In recent years, wildlife has occupied an important place in garden designers’ hearts. And, while nature is still an influencing factor, it was reassuring to see a return to pure aesthetics at the key garden design shows in 2015 – which, of course, showcase what we will be doing with our gardens in 2016 and beyond. Both RHS Chelsea and the Hampton Court Palace Flower Shows were brimming with ideas and inspiration, many of which can be successfully incorporated into residential town or country gardens. Here, we look at the key trends to emerge for 2016.
Texture and touch Rusted metal continues to fascinate designers and architects, and injects an industrial feel to contemporary gardens. Mostly used in sculpture, garden buildings and boundary panels, it contrasts well with soft, loose planting and virtually any colour scheme. Adam Frost used Cor-Ten steel as a background to his vertical water walls at RHS Chelsea 2015, and leading landscape gardener Andy Sturgeon has long been a fan. ‘Rusted metals are very interesting,’ says John Wyer, one half of award-winning garden design duo Bowles & Wyer. ‘I have seen a 26 www.chewtonrose.co.uk
definite increase in the use of weathered steel, and it’s also finding its way into public realm projects – Dan Pearson’s scheme in London’s King’s Cross, for example. At Bowles & Wyer, we have been using wax-finished, acidetched rusty steel, which has a really rich and interesting finish – almost like leather.’ In paving and walling, a similarly industrial finish can be achieved with inky-black granite or slate replacing creamy sandstone. At Chelsea last year, Darren Hawkes took 40,000 pieces of hand-cut slate and used them ‘on edge’ to create beautifully textured steps and ‘floating’ platforms in the Brewin Dolphin garden. John is pleased to see a return to British slate, including Cornish, Cumbrian and Welsh varieties.
Warm woods Wood is infinitely versatile (and sustainable, if sourced sensitively) so it was a relief to see it on form in last year’s garden shows. Matthew Wilson created a beautiful curving timber path that he described as ‘a deck like no other’, and Adam Frost also used wood in warm honey tones, both designers proving that timber decking has recovered its somewhat tarnished reputation.

Another new trend is charred wood – for fencing, garden furniture and sculpture – which is very Japanese in spirit. ‘I expect it to become increasingly popular,’ says John.
Creative colour One colour that stood out in 2015’s show garden planting schemes was yellow, its vibrancy underpinning a wider citrus palette of lemon, lime and tangerine. Indeed, lime green led the way in Ann-Marie Powell’s gold medal-winning garden at Hampton Court, and ‘Mondrian yellow’ played a starring role in Marcus Barnett’s garden – his design was inspired by the De Stijl art movement and also featured lots of cubed topiary. Although yellow can be divisive, John, for one, is delighted: ‘A revival of the more astringent colours is long overdue and it delivers a contemporary feel to herbaceous borders. Definitely a trend to look out for.’ And, if there’s a star plant to be acquired in 2016, it’s the gorgeous, claret-coloured ‘Masterpiece’ lupin and its country cousin, Baptisia ‘Purple Smoke’. A new romance The modern interpretation of romance has a weathered, wilder edge. Designer Jo Thompson delivered a beautiful scheme at RHS Chelsea, and the Rich brothers’ design was a masterclass in understated silvery planting, against a background of greyed oak. To get the look, introduce shades of white, dusty pink and silver, and use traditional plants like rose, hollyhock and iris.
TOP TO BOTTOM: Rusted metal brings an interesting texture; Gaze Burvill's outdoor kitchen, which is fast becoming a garden must-have; the World Vision Garden, designed by John Warland; Marcus Barnett's De Stijl-inspired garden
Cooking outdoors Outdoor kitchens are a must, and not to be confused with the terrace barbecue. ‘We have incorporated more kitchens into garden design projects in the past two years than in the previous 20,’ notes John. ‘They have taken over from spas as a “must-have” garden feature, and are much more practical. They’re also perfect for roof terraces.’ Gaze Burvill unveiled its new A La Carte outdoor kitchen collection in 2015, handmade in oak. Master craftsman Simon Burvill is convinced of this trend’s virtues: ‘There is something unbeatably enjoyable about cooking up a feast outdoors, whether for two or 12, in town or country. The outdoor equipment available – grills, fridges, warming drawers – is so impressive now that no one has to compromise on what can be cooked up.’
LET THERE BE LIGHT Outdoor lighting ideas and the illumination experts to call Be decorative There’s no reason why outdoor lighting can't be sculptural, as well as useful. The Konstsmide Monza wall light falls firmly into that category and is available in three finishes: anodised copper (perfect for the current ‘rusted metal’ design trend), brushed aluminium and anodised brass. £95. www.johnlewis.com
Wall stars Jim Lawrence is known for its understated, handmade interior fittings and the outdoor lighting is no less elegant. Several wall lanterns come in a coloured enamel finish if you want to use your garden lighting to introduce a pop of discreet colour. Try the Somerton (from £358.10) or the Coach (from £240.50). www. jim-lawrence.co.uk
Go pro John Cullen Lighting created the illumination for Marcus Barnett’s gold medal RHS Chelsea garden, and the company offers a full lighting design service (www. johncullenlighting. co.uk). Moonlight Design, a Londonbased garden lighting specialist, has a phenomenal choice of fittings, and its work is regularly seen on TV and in show gardens. www.moonlight design.co.uk www.chewtonrose.co.uk 27

GOOD MANOR
Located moments away from the north Norfolk coast, Titchwell Manor is an attractive, 27-room boutique hotel with a food offering that has turned it into a foodie hot spot. The man responsible for putting the place on the culinary map is Eric Snaith, who oversees both the gastropubby Eating Rooms and the fine-dining Conservatory. At the Conservatory, Eric serves dishes such as spring vegetable salad with potato and mint soup and goat’s cheese; fillet of cod with Dingley Dell pork, wild garlic and smoked roe; and Fielding Cottage goat with olive, tomato and asparagus, as well as a seven-course set menu, which he describes as ‘modern European food that’s both creative and innovative’. For a taste of Eric’s style and to see how passionate he is about what he does, you can read his blog at www.ericsnaith.typepad.com. HAPPY HOUR AGAIN Spring is about fresh and zingy flavours, so, for a twist on a classic daiquiri, pour 50ml Diplomatico Blanco rum, 15ml freshly squeezed lime juice and 7.5ml vanilla syrup into a shaker, add cubed ice and shake until the tin is frosted. Double strain into a chilled glass. Serve with a lime wedge. Find Diplomatico Blanco Rum (£29.95) at The Whisky Exchange, Selfridges and leading independent spirit merchants.
THETABLE
BATH TIME
Bath’s Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa recently enjoyed a £5 million ‘refresh’. The hotel’s 45 rooms and suites are luxurious and welcoming, each with its own colour scheme and hand-picked antiques. The hotel also has beautiful gardens and a top-notch spa. But general manager Jonathan Stapleton isn’t one to rest on his laurels. ‘I want The Royal Crescent to become recognised as one of the UK’s truly great hotels,’ says Jonathan. Another great reason to visit comes in the form of chef David Campbell, who has created some excellent menus at the Dower House Restaurant. During an overnight stay, we were blown away by a dinner that included scallops with smoked eel, a market-fresh brill and a great creamed spelt with heritage carrots. David is passionate about nutrition and presentation. ‘Our food has classic themes, but we use modern methods and plating styles. We combine good ingredients, elegant yet simple presentation, and throw in a little bit of fun and intrigue.' WHAT A CATCH
The humble chippy has been given a makeover by Eric Snaith at his eponymous Eric’s Fish & Chips in beautiful Thornham in Norfolk. Beerbattered line-caught cod, Lime Bay pollock and Lime Bay gurnard are fried in beef dripping (and served with first-class chips) and share the menu with battered squid, battered Dingley Dell sausage, and pea and ham fritters. There’s a wine list, too, and also a kids’ menu, including fishcake and scampi and chips. AGENT’S SECRET
‘Lucky for us, a great new independent wine bar has opened next door called The Wallow (@wallowwine). It offers 48 wines on tap. You put money on a kind of credit card so you can taste the wines before helping yourself to a glass.’ Annie Edwards, Chewton Rose Norwich www.chewtonrose.co.uk 29
LIGHT FANTASTIC
The reinvention of King’s Cross continues this spring with the very recent opening of pub, dining room and bar The Lighterman. Located on Regent’s Canal and overlooking the achingly trendy Granary Square (above), The Lighterman is named after the Victorian-era workers who operated ‘lighters’, flat-bottomed goods barges, on the River Thames and London’s canals. The contemporary building – all floor-to-ceiling windows and exposed concrete walls – is designed by award-winning architects Stanton Williams and provides a great backdrop to a modern British menu, overseen by Diego Cardoso of Percy & Founders fame. There’s a canalside bar, too, with al fresco terrace, which is sure to be a hot ticket once the weather warms up. The Lighterman, 3 Granary Square, London N1C 4BH, www.thelighterman.co.uk
THE FUTURE’S ORANGE Fancy trying something new with dinner? Chapel Down recently released England’s first orange wine. And rather nice it is, too. Chapel Down Orange Bacchus 2014 (£20) is slightly apple-y, with hints of citrus and just a hint of smokiness. Definitely one for the ABC (anything but Chardonnay) crowd. www.chapeldown.com 30 www.chewtonrose.co.uk
ISLAND LIFE
Andrew Baird says his career as an award-winning chef is all down to a split-second decision while at school: ‘I was called into the headmaster’s office and he asked me what I wanted to do. I panicked and just said the first thing that came to mind, which was to enrol in catering college.’ And so enrol he did. While there, Andrew was sent on a placement on the Caledonian train before securing a placement at The Ritz – ‘a fabulous experience’. In 1987, he moved to Jersey to take up the post of chef de partie at Longueville Manor. Fast-forward to today and the chef now oversees all the food at the swish hotel. Much of the produce Andrew uses comes from the hotel’s own kitchen garden. ‘Diners love the idea that items on their plate have come from the Victorian garden only 20 metres away,’ says the chef. ‘I talk to the gardener every day. He comes into the kitchen for his break, we feed him and, in return, he tells us what’s prime for picking and we discuss
what we need to plant next. ’Lovers of seasonal produce are very well catered for at Longueville: ‘Rocket, baby leaf greens and pea shoots are great in March,’ says Andrew. ‘As we move into April, more leaves and pea shoots will develop. We will start to see the first outdoor rhubarbs appearing, as well as more nettles. Mint and chives are also great at this time of year. In May, elderflower appear, as do the first outdoor, naturally grown Jersey Royals, as well as whole head lettuces, more rhubarbs, mint, chive flowers and borage…’ And, whatever ingredient he is using, you can be sure that every dish Andrew creates adheres to his mission statement for the hotel: ‘to make every element the best it can be, from the handmade croissants in the morning to the lobster at night.’ Longueville Manor, Longueville Road, St Saviour, Jersey JE2 7WF, 01534 725501, www.longuevillemanor.com
THE TABLE IN LOVE WITH LOMBARDY If you love Italian food, news of a deli dedicated to the flavours and produce of Lombardy should be music to your ears. Il Cudega, in east London, is run by Giovanni Brighi and childhood friend Luca Gaggioli, with head chef Paolo Elesbani joining them. They offer a brilliant selection of charcuterie, cheeses and wines imported from hand-picked ‘slow food’ producers – so expect prosciutto and panetta from the likes of Marco D’Oggiono Prosciutti, and olive oil and antipasti from Frantoio Ulivi di Liguria. Il Cudega, Arch 358, Westgate Street, London E8 3RN, 020 7241 6599, www.ilcudega.com
BLUES IS THE COLOUR If you like a side order of good music with your supper, try the latest outpost of The Blues Kitchen team, in Brixton, south London. Southern-style cooking is the order of the day, with appetisers such as spicy buffalo wings and Cajun blackened shrimp the perfect prelude to 16-hour smoked short beef rib and Texan beef brisket rubbed with Blues Kitchen seasoning. The team has undertaken pilgrimages to Texas, Tennessee and Louisiana, bringing
back the aforementioned dishes and a series of brunch foods, such as Pig and Biscuits (southern biscuits, pulled pork, poached eggs, hollandaise sauce and crispy bacon) and Creole Crab Benedict (fried crab cakes, poached eggs and hollandaise sauce). The music is a mix of blues, swing, gospel and bluegrass, with visiting bands and DJ sets. The Blues Kitchen, 40 Acre Lane, London SW2 5SP, 020 7274 0591, www.theblueskitchen.com

ODE TO OUD
Lord Nelson, Winston Churchill and James Bond all wore Floris scents. Churchill loved ‘Special No 127’, while Bond opted for ‘No 89’. City gents through the ages have loved Floris’ ‘Limes’ – an invigorating citrus scent created in the 1700s to combat the heat and odours of the London summertime that remains as fresh and appealing today. ‘Limes’ is the ideal scent for daytime, but, come evening, we recommend Leather Oud, a heady mix of warm amber and smoky oud with a hint of leather. £160/100ml. www.florislondon.com

SPA SENSATIONS
You would expect a hotel and spa that’s won several design awards to have the ‘wow’ factor. But wow doesn’t even come close at Liverpool’s Titanic Hotel. A former warehouse in the city’s historic docks area – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – it is stark and stately, but with such attention to detail and careful design that, inside, it’s warm and welcoming, The Rum Bar and lounge, and Stanley’s Bar and Grill are great meeting places for cocktails and parties, and also have cosy nooks and alcoves for quieter libations and tranquil hours. This dual personality runs throughout the hotel: the rooms
Holland & Holland has taken inspiration from glamorous safaris for its latest collection. For the gents, there’s a new collection of luxury polo shirts, an unlined shirt-style suede jacket and a selection of reinvented safari shorts. EXPERT ADVICE FOR BUYING, SELLING AND MORE
The Knowledge MEET THE AGENT PAUL ROWE, SENIOR BRANCH PARTNER, ASCOT CHEWTON ROSE
Q+A
levels of customer service and, importantly, just for dealing with someone normal, who wasn’t the stereotypical estate agent. WHERE WERE YOU BEFORE CHEWTON ROSE? I worked for a local, well-known independent firm for 15 years, here in Ascot, and now I can’t imagine working anywhere else. The area offers such a diverse mix of property – from small, quirky period conversions to state-of-the-art, luxury new-build mansions and country homes. WHAT WAS THE APPEAL OF CHEWTON ROSE? I’m excited to be involved with the brand-new Ascot branch. Chewton Rose offers exceptional bespoke marketing, using professionally written editorials, brochures and photography, as well as a desire to provide a service standard much higher than traditional estate agents. TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW COLLEAGUES. Although Chewton Rose is new to Ascot, locals will recognise our experienced team, including David Vigurs and Philip Dodd, who between them boast more than 59 years selling property from Ascot High Street. We will continue to build a reputation as the area’s leading independent firm by providing direct, honest and realistic advice to our clients.
‘We will continue to build a reputation as the area’s leading independent firm by providing realistic advice to our clients’
WHAT’S SPECIAL ABOUT ASCOT? It’s a great place to live. It is worldfamous, of course, for Ascot Racecourse. The area attracts a lot of young families because of leading state and private schools and superb leisure facilities. Prestigious golf clubs include Wentworth, Sunningdale and The Berkshire, with polo at Coworth Park, the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club and Guards Polo Club. Virginia Water Lake and The Savill Garden are within easy reach and there is horse riding at Chobham Common and Windsor Great Park.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR CAREER. I have worked in estate agency locally for 18 years. I fell into the industry having left college with no idea of what to do next. My first job was selling advertising for a local newspaper, but being stuck in an office all day was not for me. I enjoyed the buzz of the sales environment, though. The newspaper ran a property section and the manager at the time suggested it may be a good career for me. Agency struck an enjoyable balance for me, meeting new people, seeing fantastic houses… I realised there was a demand and gap in the market for high 34 www.chewtonrose.co.uk
WHAT ABOUT THE SURROUNDING AREA? Ascot, Windsor and the nearby towns and villages offer great shops, boutiques, bars and traditional pubs. The area boasts fine dining, with Coworth Park, The Waterside Inn and Heston Blumenthal’s restaurants in Bray within easy reach. WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO WINE AND DINE? I enjoy a good lazy breakfast or brunch and, for me, the best can be had at Fego Caffé in Ascot High Street or The Brickmakers in Windlesham. Noteworthy restaurants nearby include Ascot Grill, Thatched Tavern and my favourite – Piccolino in Virginia Water, notable for its terrace with retractable roof and wood-burning/ charcoal grill.
THE AGENTS’ ADVICE WORDS OF WISDOM FROM CHEWTON ROSE’S PEOPLE
THE TESTIMONIAL When we decided to move from London to Suffolk, finding the right property was a daunting task. We had viewed properties with several agents based in Colchester. Chewton Rose stood out among them with its dedicated service. The brochures were very well presented and there was always someone at the end of the telephone. Nick Curtis showed us around most of the properties, including the one we eventually moved into. He impressed us with his knowledge, dedication and honesty. He made the entire process less stressful for us by liaising with solicitors, other agents, etc. His calm and composed nature meant that we were reassured that things were under control. We would like to say a big thank you to Nick and the team at Chewton Rose for the fantastic service they have provided us. Keep up the good work. Dr Maha Mohan and Dr Subash Vasudevan
Congratulations, Chewton Rose, on selling our beloved 17th-century farmhouse! Not an easy task for a one-off property, but expertly handled and marketed from the outset. We endured numerous problems and, at times, traumas, occasioned by persons further along the ‘dreaded chain’! All these problems were dealt with professionally and sympathetically by our link man at Chewton Rose – namely, Craig Berrow. We were constantly informed of each stage of the procedure of the sale and any cause of stress or anxiety was shouldered by Craig. We cannot fault the care and expertise offered to us by Chewton Rose and would not hesitate to recommend the team at the Cardiff branch to any of our friends or relations should they require to purchase or sell a property. Well done, Chewton Rose, we shall be forever grateful to you. Ron and Diane Lewis

HOW IMPORTANT IS ONLINE MARKETING AND WHAT WEBSITES DO YOU USE? ‘Online marketing is very important,’ says Nicholas Curtis, Assistant Branch Partner, Colchester Chewton Rose. ‘It’s a marketing tool that showcases the marketing we provide – the clear, crisp and professional quality of our online photographs and brochures, and our enticing lifestyle text. It also lets us show a good selection of wider shots of the property, not just close-ups of features. This is an obvious statement, but it still amazes me that many agents have pictures of their staff in mirrors, cars on the drive, untidy rooms and a poor selection that doesn’t give a more rounded and broad view of the property you’re trying to sell. Floor plans, too, are very important, as buyers want to see how existing and new furniture might work in a property.’ For Timothy Gerrard, Branch Partner, Gerrards Cross Chewton Rose, online is ‘vital in the modern age to complement our traditional regimes. We are on Rightmove, OnTheMarket and Country Life.’
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF USING AN ESTABLISHED AGENT WITH BRICKS-ANDMORTAR HIGH-STREET PRESENCE? ‘We have the knowledge of our local area,’ says Belinda Bishop, Branch Partner, South Wales Chewton Rose. ‘We can suggest properties and areas that buyers might not have thought of.’ For Graham Lang, Branch Partner, West Bridgford and East Midlands Chewton Rose, it is all about the service. ‘As an agent on the high street, we give our customers an opportunity to see us face-toface. The presence also gives reassurance to the customer that we are not an agent that is “here today and gone tomorrow”. Although the physical act of going into an estate agent’s office and browsing the displays is not as popular as it once was, looking at the displays in the window is still a national pastime.’ Annie Edwards, Branch Partner, Norwich Chewton Rose, believes a high-street agent can offer things an online-only agent could never compete with. ‘The knowledge and experience of a professional agent can never be overestimated, by knowing areas for potential buyers and being able to offer advice, or even overcoming problems in certain parts of the county, placing an accurate price to market the property, so it does not become stale, and end up achieving a lower sale price. Also, by involving our sellers in every step of the way, we target the type of buyer who would suit the property best, rather than send lots of unsuitable buyers round, wasting everyone’s time. Finally, when the sale is agreed, sorting out all the problems to ensure completion takes place.’

THE INTERVIEW
Keith Penton
The head of jewellery at Christie’s London has been involved in the sale of some of the world’s most beautiful and expensive items. Here, he reveals some gems of his own Tell us a bit about your work. It mainly involves assessing jewellery and gemstones for private collectors and jewellery professionals. This may involve travel anywhere in the world. How did you get to where you are today? I started in the jewellery business about 27 years ago after leaving university, first selling antique jewellery in a shop and then moving to a London auction house as an auctioneer’s clerk and cashier. After that, I became a porter in the jewellery department and worked my way up. I studied gemmology and diamond grading in the evenings and became a Fellow of the Gemmological Association and the diamond grading equivalent. What are the most memorable jewels you have sold? Selling the Wittelsbach diamond in 2008 was a career-defining moment, as it covered 300 years of history, dating back to Philip IV of Spain, and briefly broke an auction world record when it sold for £16.4m. Other highlights include the sale of Princess Margaret’s jewellery and the Elizabeth Taylor sale. What is your favourite gem or jewel? It is difficult to choose just one. If you have researched the historic background of a jewel, you have a greater connection to it, or if you have assisted in the sale of a piece to a collector who is passionate about it, you also remember the item vividly. If I had to choose a coloured gemstone as a favourite, it would probably be a Kashmir sapphire, as the best examples exhibit a beautiful velvety blue like no other sapphire. Do you wear jewellery yourself? A family signet ring. How would you describe your personal style? I am fairly conservative and traditional when it comes to clothes, although I do have a penchant for good shoes and ties. At weekends I occasionally wear jeans, but generally my style could be described as country. Where do you live and what is your home like? I live in London in a typical Edwardian house and it is the opposite of minimalist, as I collect pictures, books and anything that catches my eye. I also have a bolthole on the Suffolk coast, which is furnished with rustic painted furniture and folk art. Home is important to me – London provides the excitement of living in arguably the greatest city on Earth and Suffolk has the drama of the sea. How do you spend your free time? Walking along the coast, enjoying a pint in a village pub, hunting for books and decorative antiques at a fair or market, dinner with friends at home, or visiting museums, exhibitions and churches are all an attractive proposition for me. What are your upcoming projects? I already have a trip to the Middle East and Athens planned, but a major element of the job is reacting quickly to a request for a valuation and seeing where that leads. www.christies.com 114 www.chewtonrose.co.uk
A pair of rare Georgian diamond ear pendants (above) and a late-19thcentury sapphire and diamond brooch (bottom left), both sold at auction by Christie’s; a typical Edwardian house like Keith’s (below); and the Suffolk coast, where Keith has a ‘bolthole’ (bottom)
