Sheffield was home to innovators who had the imagination to turn the raw materials they had into something much better. The crucible technique was invented by Benjamin Huntsman in 1790 to produce stronger steel and was not superseded for another 100 years. Stainless steel was invented in the city by Harry Brearley in 1912 and is still in use today. The pioneering work of F. B. Pickering and T. Gladman between the 1960s and 1980s contributed hugely to the steel alloys upon which our modern world is built.
Today, Sheffield has taken that old spirit of innovation and put it to thoroughly modern use. The city is a major research centre and one of the UK’s creative and digital hubs.
