What’s the idea behind Hang-Up? Traditional art galleries can sometimes feel intimidating for people to enter and we’re trying to break down these barriers. Staff are as welcoming as possible and the space is warm and friendly. We also have a big online presence where we sell limited-edition prints from more than 200 artists. The website actually came before the gallery – back in 2008 – and we are now Europe’s leading online contemporary art gallery. What inspires your choice of artists? Hang-Up is split 50/50 between street/ urban artists and contemporary artists. We sell works from big-name artists, such as Banksy, Harland Miller and Sir Peter Blake, and also work with younger emerging artists at the start of their careers, such as Mark Powell, Joe Webb and Magnus Gjoen. We show only those who are inherently creative, artists whom in some way break the mould from the traditional, pushing the boundaries either in terms of their work, their message or both. What shows do you have coming up this spring? In 2014, we’ll be showing east London-based skull artist Lauren Baker, artist/icongraphiste Patrick Thomas and will continue to work with Mark Powell, Joe Webb and Magnus Gjoen. We know why people love living in…

Fulham

A snug fit in a bow of the Thames, Fulham – with Chelsea to the northwest, West Kensington the east and the river flowing south – is one of the capital’s most defined villages, perfectly self-contained. The Romans settled here. In the ninth century it was a winter retreat for invading Danes, and 900 years later the Las Vegas of the south, a playground for nefarious revelry. In the 19th century Fulham Palace Road was a tale of two cities, with a workhouse at one end and a palace at the other. Later, Mahatma Gandhi lived here, and today, with its tree-lined streets of

Reasons to visit or, better still, move to Fulham include plenty of green spaces, topnotch restaurants and excellent shopping opportunities

Edwardian and Victorian splendour, town houses, Guinness Trust apartments, multiple green spaces and riverside walks, it is a most desirable area. Home to four former village centres: Fulham Broadway, Parsons Green, Munster Village and Wandsworth Bridge Road, it is well served by the District line and attracts a local population of affluent families, a large French community drawn by the area’s lycée, and young professionals. Behind its leafy, relaxed façade, Fulham’s stand-alone spirit looms large, evident in the independent shops that abound, such as Emma Bridgewater ceramics, Carina Haslam Designs and antique boutiques on Munster Road and Lillie Road. Food lovers are spoiled with Union Market, a local, organic superstore, and North End Road’s

traditional fruit and veg market, and a gazillion restaurants offering top-notch nosh to hungry Fulhamites. From the famous Blue Elephant, complete with lily pond and jungle, to the acclaimed River Café; seasonal-serving The Sands End to the first Michelin-starred gastro pub The Harwood Arms. There are as many locations offering liquid refreshment, and still going strong is The White Horse – the hostelry of choice of the Sloane Ranger back in the 1980s, and still known locally as the ‘Sloaney Pony’. Less riotous, is Fulham Palace, where the Bishop of London used to spend his summers, surrounded by the longest moat in the country. Sometime hotspot for the silver screen – The Omen and Sliding Doors were filmed here – art lovers will adore galleries such as Grapefruit Gallery; all part of the magic that long-time residents Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe and TV chef Lorraine Pascale find so desirable. Those wanting a real-life culture fix head for the bijou Finborough

Theatre that puts on work by new writers, and the Troubadour – onetime hangout of Bob Dylan, the Black Panthers and Paul Simon – continues to put on folk, blues and poetry nights. For exercising away excess there is Hurlingham Park, South Park and Parsons Green that hosts an annual fair; for merely spectating, two football clubs, Fulham and Chelsea, play here; the Boat Race passes nearby Putney Bridge, and London’s sole urban beach set up its deckchairs at Bishops Park. SW6 seems to have it all, and it is easy to see why it is called the ‘Fulham Bubble’. ‘People here don’t want to leave. They have every amenity and culture right on the doorstep,’ says Mark Dernes, Sales Manager at Felicity J Lord’s new Fulham branch. It shows no sign of bursting any time soon.

eople will stare,’ said Harry Winston, ‘make it worth their while.’ A burst of colour in your outfit means you’ll always be noticed and also helps brighten up the dullest day, not just for you, but for everyone you come into contact with. As the colourful characters in our pictures – taken around Stoke Newington, Hampstead and Surrey Quays – demonstrate, a flash of some bright shade sets you apart from the crowd. ‘Colours are the mirror of the soul,’ says Rachele Pasinato (right), whose flame-red locks suggest a very vibrant soul indeed, while for new mum Katie Abbott (above), colour provides the opportunity to add some ‘va va voom!’ to life. The transformative power of a colourful outfit should never be underestimated. Psychologists agree that ditching neutrals in favour of something a little more eye-catching can make us feel cheerier (yellow), more energetic (red) or even more spiritual (violet). So get colouring.

my style

‘I don’t really like to label myself with a particular style. I just wear what I like the look of and chuck it all on together. It normally works, but if it doesn’t I tend to wear it anyway! I don’t get to shop much, but when I do Zara tends to be one of my first ports of call. It is reasonably priced and pretty good quality, too. I also like COS and The Kooples – a little more pricey, but brilliant for window shopping. Charity shops are great, too, for one-offs and bargains, especially around Brick Lane. My favourite item of clothing has to be my hand-me-down oversized wool and cashmere overcoat, which I have recently “smuggled” from my mum’s house. It’s a classic that will always stand the test of time. She certainly won’t be getting it back!’ Harriet Bishop, Trainee Sales Negotiator, Felicity J Lord, Chiswick W4, 020 8747 8601

Goat has gone from go-to label for cashmere to got-to-have full-on ready-to-wear collection. Set up a decade ago by Jane Lewis, the understated luxury of Goat now includes dresses and separates, but the aesthetic remains the same: less is more. The new season’s collection is big on texture with geometric jacquards and woven monochrome florals in the softest silk and crispest cotton. Shift dresses and clean lines with high waists and patch pockets lean towards the 1960s; flared trousers in crêpe and denim, and raised shoulders owe more to the 1970s. And, as ever with Goat, there are the fine details here in seam decoration and fabric-covered buttons. ‘I love the combination of textures in the woven linens and crisp white cotton stripes,’ says Jane. ‘And the contrast of soft shapes against the monochrome as well as the pattern in softer colours.’ A spring palette of sherbet lemon, watermelon and aqua is divine. ‘I had a strong feeling for fresh aqua and sherbet hues contrasted against stark monochrome,’ explains Jane. It is safe to say, so will Goat devotees. SJ

Perfecting Plant Peel Facial After a welcoming hello, Kiran takes my bag and coat and points me towards the dinky descending spiral staircase at the front of Fulham’s Gina Conway Aveda Spa. As I reach the bottom, dozens of flickering candles provide a gentle light and the upstairs noise evaporates, replaced by an instant, heady calm. I am here for a Perfecting Plant Peel Facial (£88 for a one-hour session) yet, while Kiran asks me about my skin, wellbeing – pretty stressed of late – and cleansing routines, I sit back wrapped in the fluffiest

of robes, sipping lemon water, enjoying a foot scrub. Aveda has a holistic approach to all treatments and mine begins with my chosen oil – sandalwood – being applied to pressure points from my head down to my feet. I’m then swaddled in soft towels and wraps and the facial begins. It is an hour of bliss. Soothing music in the background, Kiran does her stuff as I nod off from the sumptuous upper arm and neck massage that accompanies every stage. At the end, Kiran leaves me to get up in my own time before bringing a cup of hot, sweet tea and tells me what she’s discovered about my skin and recommends – no big sales pitch here – products to help. My skin feels so soft, I find it hard to stop touching it, and my shoulders as though a weight has been lifted. My hair, however, is a fright (you can opt not to have oil in your hair), but no need to worry. Kiran leads me upstairs to the bright and friendly salon where Sherind shampoos my hair after a lavender-infused head massage – and hands me over to Flic, who styles me a brand new do (£25). Perfecting Plant Peel Facials are recommended every four to six weeks. My next one is already booked. SJ WINTER 2013/2014 | LOCATE_13

Hexagone If your bank balance is as limited as your holiday leave, a weekend in Paris is unlikely to figure in your January or February travel plans. Worry not. Recreate the magic of shopping in the French capital with a trip to Hexagone in the bohemian Camden Passage instead. Decked out in minimal monochrome, Hexagone is as delightfully Gallic as its owners, Karine Duverneuil and Delphine Reynaud. Both come from the south of France but now call London home. Their original plan was to open a gallery and café in Shoreditch, but premises proved elusive. As luck would have it, east London’s loss is Islington’s gain. Karine and Delphine’s background in marketing and the arts means that they approach their stock with a fresh eye. Everything originates from France, has an element of craftsmanship and is designed to last. ‘We use artisans who are specialists in their field, who focus on one type of product,’ says Karine. ‘Some of our suppliers have been making the same product for more than 100 years. We feature new designers, too, but the same criteria applies – quality, craft and durability.’ The result is an idiosyncratic combination of scented candles, joyful childrenswear, stylish stationery, elegant boots, long-handled totes and homey knick-knacks. When asked which products she loves most, Karine answers, ‘I love the ceramics, leather boots and Cire Trudon candles.’ With that, she releases the fragrance of a Cire Trudon Abd el Kader candle into the air: a blend of mint, lemon and ginger that reminds her of a souk in Marrakesh. For me, the scent was more like a perfect summer Pimm’s. And with it being the middle of winter, that can only be a good thing.

Chefs hail from Nopi and Zilouf’s and you can tell this is fusion done properly, not to mention affordably, with five sharing dishes for two people priced at just £15 per head. When you’re talking about eggplant salad with sweet toasted coconut, roasted butternut squash tumbling in pearls of quinoa and coriander seeds, and braised octopus with mellow celeriac purée – all cooked with the skill to rival that of the West End’s swishest head chefs – that’s not a bad deal. 100 Hoxton, 100-102 Hoxton Street N1, 020 7729 1444, 100hoxton.com

Six hours. That’s how long it takes to smoke bacon ribs at the new Clerkenwell hotspot, Foxlow. But the beef short rib tops the leaderboard, racking up eight hours of smoke time before it’s served with kimchi. As you may have guessed, meat is still the hero at this new venture from the Hawksmoor duo, and you can choose between slow-smoked, charcoal-grilled and roasted options. Turkey makes an appearance as a black breast with sausage gravy or a smoked sub sarnie, and seafood options include cured salmon, monkfish and five-peppered squid. But the real shocker is a salad bar offering a gutsy medley of baked beets, Moroccan spiced squash and Charlotte spuds with gremolata, alongside lighter flavours of lemon-roasted fennel and carrot, and caper-dappled romanesco. Something for everyone then. Foxlow, 69-73 St John Street, Clerkenwell EC1, 020 7014 8070, foxlow.co.uk

the vegetarian option

Little Orchard

This is not your average veggie set-up. For a start, Little Orchard doesn’t wax virtuous about how vegetarians shall inherit the Earth. Instead, this small café-cum-takeaway focuses on serving imaginative homemade British food that just happens to not include meat. As owner and head chef Andrew Dargue puts it, ‘We don’t follow the stereotypical vegetarian menu of pasta bakes and chickpea curries. We strongly believe that shouting about vegetarianism is not a good thing – it’s just good food without meat or fish.’ The team behind Little Orchard is also responsible for Vanilla Black near Chancery Lane and Orchard in Holborn, so you can expect some serious advances on traditional veggie fare in a weekly-changing menu. Who needs meat anyway? And don’t look for a website – Little Orchard is keeping things edgy in not having one. Little Orchard, 6 Laystall Street EC1

Jam hot Decidedly different to the gastropubs that populate this part of town, The Jam Tree is determined to break the mould. It does this with Technicolor wall art, polished Tom Dixon pendants and none of your trendy taxidermy, although, admittedly, there are a few reclaimed dining chairs. The menu focuses on fresh modern British favourites with a few classics ‘from previous colonies’, in other words, slow-roasted duck leg, and cod and prawn fishcakes, alongside Jamaican chicken curry and Singapore laksa. Brunch happens on Saturdays, and when winter’s finally over, the evening barbecues will resume in the garden, grilling up burgers, chili dogs, swordfish and all sorts of skewers. Matthew Fort Bermondsey’s so well-groomed these days. Boutique shops, boutique restaurants, boutique flats, boutique hotels… Whatever happened to the rough-andtumble of the old Bermondsey of Wee Willie Harris, the UK’s first rock ’n’ roller, Tommy Steele, Millwall FC and Peek Frean’s biscuits? Ah well. Sic transit gloria mundi. Village East of Bermondsey definitely belongs to the new Bermondsey – modish, neoindustrial funk, silvered wood floor and surfaces, air-con ducts, brick walls, metal grills, industrialesque lighting, plus multiple levels and Chesterfield banquette booths, a kind of Blade Runner watering hole without the rain. Q+A

Carmelo Carnevale, Sicilian wonder chef, on Ballaró – his new Hampstead venture

address book secret

Wapping uncorked Wapping: famous for its docks, print works and, now, wine. Victualler is fast becoming E1’s favourite wine bar. Just a hop, skip and a jump from the Overground station, it’s the perfect after-work stop-off or weekend jaunt. Victualler specialises in organic, biodynamic and natural wines – paired with light bites of British cuisine. Take your pick from a selection of more than 90 white, red, rosé and sparkling wines, as well as port and sherry, and enjoy with locally sourced cheeses, meats and breads. On weekends, chef Brent serves up oysters delivered fresh from Whitstable, Kent. The bar embraces its industrial surroundings with bare brick walls, but keeps things cosy with warm, wooden furnishings, sofas and candle lighting throughout. Victualler holds regular winetasting events and you can also buy bottles at the bar or online to take home. Victualler, 69 Garnet Street, Wapping E1, 020 7481 9694, victualler.co.uk MY DAY ON A PLATE WHAT AN AGENT EATS ‘I enjoy almost all types of food depending on the mealtime, the day of the week, the season, the company or the occasion. A regular favourite is a roast on a Sunday! I recently had a brilliant one at Roast in Borough Market. Work is generally busy, so my lunch is usually grabbed and rushed – a bowl of soup, a sandwich… When eating out in the evening, I enjoy French and British food, and have had some great meals at the restaurants at Butler’s Wharf. A little while back I went to Aqua at The Shard – breathtaking views. What do I drink? Lager. And a good Pinot with a meal.’ Guy Williamson, Senior Branch Partner, Felicity J Lord, Islington N1, 020 7226 7319

You’ve cooked for royalty, Russian glitterati and Mayfair business hotshots. What brought you to Haverstock Hill? My first job in London was in Hampstead more than 13 years ago. I love the people here. There’s a real community feel and it’s very different from working in the West End. I like working somewhere where you see the same familiar faces returning over and over again. You’ve worked at Harry’s Bar, Simplice and the glamorous Novikov. What makes Ballaró different? Ballaró is about my origin. The other restaurants I’ve worked at were about Italian food in general, but Ballaró is about my roots, where I grew up. It’s Sicilian with a touch of innovation. ‘Ballaró’ is the name of the largest food market in Palermo and I wanted to bring the market to life here. All the suppliers have been asked to

research the market when they’re buying produce for us. What dishes do we have to try? Sicilian food is influenced by a lot of different countries: Africa, Spain and Greece. The seafood with couscous is a typical dish from Trapani. It’s our signature dish and was the best seller on the opening night. Cavetelli is also very good. It’s a type of gnocchi made with semolina. I then add a twist with a sauce that comes from north Italy and Nerello Mascalese, a traditional Sicilian wine. What do you predict will be the next big food trend? I think there’s going to be a trend for regional Italian cooking, celebrating the variety from region to region. There’s already TOZI in Victoria, a typical Venetian, and a Pugliese restaurant in Queen’s Park. It’s a new way to eat Italian food. Which is your favourite London restaurant? I love Murano. Angela Hartnett is great. And I really love Kai in Mayfair – for a Chinese restaurant it’s completely different. My friend, Roberto, is the head sommelier; he has been very clever in matching the right wine to the right dish. With Asian food, that’s not easy. Who would you love to cook for? My favourite actor, Robert De Niro. He’s a really funny guy and I think he’d enjoy my cooking. Describe your perfect day off in London. I’d start with a walk around one of London’s parks with my wife, and then dinner in the evening. Ballaró, 154 Haverstock Hill NW3, 020 7586 1107, ballaro.co.uk

Where do you go for lunch? We are lucky to have so much choice! Lunch is usually a salad from Pret, which is just next door, or something tasty from Lemongrass Kitchen, which serves a selection of Thai dishes. For an after-work drink? Tompkins wine bar is a favourite in the office and is located on the ground floor of the iconic Pan Peninsula development. It has a good selection of cocktails, which I can highly recommend! What do you most like about Canary Wharf? It is such a diverse area that is changing and evolving all the time, from the original East End residents who hold a wealth of knowledge about the area to new residents who may have located here for work and who have now have settled in the area and made it their home. FINDING THE PERFECT BUYER

WHY WE WORK LONGER HOURS We know what it’s like to live and work in London so we open later than most Agents. We take an increasing number of enquiries from 6-10pm. That’s why we’re available late on weekdays and at weekends. Simply put, if you choose a traditional 9-5pm Agent, you may well be missing out on the perfect buyer. We’ll make sure you don’t.

WE KNOW WHY PEOPLE LOVE LIVING IN LONDON’S VILLAGES London is such an amazing place because it’s not really one place at all. It’s a collection of neighbourhoods, each with their own character and charm. And at the centre of those neighbourhoods are the villages that Londoners are fiercely loyal to. Our success is rooted in our understanding of London’s villages. It’s not just about knowing schools, shops or transport; every agent should know these things. It’s about appreciating an area’s heritage, seeing the shifting shape of things today and most crucially, it’s about having a real grasp of why people love living there. It’s that knowledge of why people love living in London’s villages that we turn to our clients’ advantage to help them buy, sell and rent property in those areas. We operate in the following villages. They are distinctive areas each with their own property and each attracting a particular group of clients.

BLACKHEATH Confusingly, Blackheath Football Club is the world’s oldest open rugby football club.

BOW Bone china was first developed and perfected in Bow in the late 1700’s.

CANARY WHARF Windmills that were used to mill the wheat and corn that fed London, lined the river wall here.

CHISWICK Chiswick was the engine room for West London at the turn of the 20th Century

CLERKENWELL St John’s Square was home to a priory of the Knights Hospitaliers of St John of Jerusalem.

FULHAM The Saxon name ‘Fullenham’ means ‘place of fowls’. By the 1500s, dishonest men stole herons from its trees.

GREENWICH The world’s only museum devoted entirely to fans is on Crooms Hill.

HACKNEY Gunpowder plotter Francis Tresham was a resident of Hackney.

ISLINGTON At its height in the 1960’s more than 350 antiques dealers traded from the market off Upper Street.

SHAD THAMES Tons of Star Anise and other spices were held in dockside warehouses here.

STOKE NEWINGTON Daniel Foe, author of Robinson Crusoe was born in Stoke Newington in 1660.

STRATFORD Stratford’s name is derived from the English words ‘stræt’ and ‘ford’ meaning ‘street’ and ‘crossing’.

SURREY QUAYS The Mayflower Inn in Surrey Quays is the only UK pub licenced to sell American stamps.

WAPPING Sailors and boat-builders worked and lived in Wapping – where the Thames was a thriving commercial waterway.
