When did you open? The gallery began as a pop-up initiative in 2009. Our early shows were staged in unusual locations all over London, from a cavernous ex-recording studio/ deconsecrated chapel in St John’s Wood to an old school on Arnold Circus, Shoreditch. We moved into our first permanent space on Great Sutton Street in Clerkenwell in November 2011 and into our current gallery two doors down in September 2013. These days we have two exhibition spaces across two floors so we’re enjoying hosting dual shows simultaneously.

We work very closely with our represented artists and host exhibitions of non-gallery artists periodically. We have a host of supporters who have contributed to the shape of the gallery over the years with energy and generosity. What does the new year hold? We’re kicking off 2015 with our first participation in the London Art Fair with a display of Jan Kempenaers and vintage NASA photography. At the same time, we will open a contemporary painting exhibition with gallery artist Benjamin Cohen, among other exciting rising stars. Clerkenwell

Clerkenwell is probably the most urban of all London’s villages. Resting just north of the City and butting Finsbury, its boundaries are blurred, but its character is distinct. Always has been. Historically and culturally rich, yesterday’s industry, trades and crafts are still woven into its fabric today; a smart and sassy, pithy, pulsating, pioneering place to live. And perfectly self-contained. Centuries ago it was a base for the distilling, brewing and printing industries, followed by watchmaking and cloth manufacture. Now it is a new media hub, boasting more graphic design and architectural agencies per head than anywhere else in the world. It takes its name from a well that dates back to the Middle Ages, part of which can be seen still in Farringdon Lane. It is also home to the capital’s only remaining Tudor town house as well as Europe’s oldest hospital, St Bart’s, founded in 1123. The spire of the journalists’ church, St Bride’s, was the

inspiration for tiered wedding cakes. George Peabody chose Clerkenwell as the site for his premier housing project in 1884, fast forward to the 20th century and it’s a mecca for brutalist and modernist architecture – the Grade ll-listed Barbican, Golden Lane and Spa Green estates. Edged by City and Farringdon Roads, it is where loft living began in former warehouses ripe for conversion. ‘Clerkenwell is cool and quirky, but it’s not crazy. It can be quiet yet you’re never more than 30 seconds away from something going on,’ says Felicity J Lord’s Jamal Gormati. ‘Professionals live here, accountants, lawyers, architects, people from all over the world because it’s so convenient. Plus, it’s Zone 1, you can walk anywhere and it has great transport links.’ Before it was built up, Clerkenwell was a get-away-from-it retreat for nearby city dwellers. The lust for

leisure is little dimmed. Sadler’s Wells is resident here as are some of the city’s best pubs (The Jerusalem Tavern, The Three Kings), bars and clubs. It is a gastronomic haven with Whitecross Street Market serving food from around the globe every Thursday and Friday, the eateries and stalls of Exmouth Market, independent delis and dining, and world-renowned restaurants such as St John and Smiths of Smithfield. The gastro pub served its first meal here, The Eagle on Farringdon Road is still going strong more than 20 years after it opened, and The Gazzano’s café and deli is one of few reminders this was once home to London’s Walk around St Bride’s Church (far left), eat some great street food at Whitecross Street Market (left) and enjoy a pint at The Jerusalem Tavern (top)

largest Italian population, St Peter’s church a lasting monument. Clerkenwell developed a reputation for radicalism: Oliver Cromwell lived here, the Charterists set up here, too, as did the Communists. Lenin lived here, met Stalin in a local hostelry – now the Crown Tavern – and the Artful Dodger taught Oliver how to pick a pocket here. Gentleman’s Magazine was founded and printed in the area in 1731, a tradition mirrored in today’s market with free local lifestyle paper The Clerkenwell Post. One-off independent shops, craft collectives and galleries – Antoni & Alison, Førest and the Lesley Craze Gallery, to name a few – echo the area’s creative past and are a present-day draw. ‘With so many small independent businesses dotted around, we’ve found it to have a real local community vibe,’ says Kevin Lunn, who moved his 1810 Creative agency to the area six months ago. ‘We wanted a creative, vibrant environment to tap into with great access to other parts of town. More development will add to the vibe. There are really good pubs off the beaten track, too.’ Some of those pubs – The Cock Tavern and The Fox and Anchor – open from 6am to serve workers from Smithfield Market, should you be gripped by early-morning thirst.

And that’s before I’ve been led downstairs for my Ultimate Aromatherapy Experience massage. My therapist is Ida, who looks concerned when I tell her I’ve had a recent throat infection. Assured it’s gone, she asks if I want her to concentrate on any specific areas, if there’s anywhere I want her to avoid and would I prefer a de-stress treatment or more general wellbeing? I choose the latter, along with frankincense for my scalp massage – it helps with stress. I love the blend of oils she recommends, which include

This feels proper, and the aroma is intoxicating, never overpowering. It works a charm. The hour is over swiftly. Afterwards I am given tea, and small treats of almonds, cranberries and chocolate to enjoy at my

mysterious Blackheath B

lackheath is a wonderful Victorian village with great amenities, shops and restaurants, but without the crowds of its famous neighbour, Greenwich – even though the two are joined by Greenwich Park. ‘However, Blackheath holds secrets, some dark, some untrue and some surprising,’ says our tour guide Emma Parker, of Coutours. Here, we help dispel some of these untruths and help separate fact from fiction. How did Blackheath get its name? Myth: We love an urban myth at Locate and how Blackheath got its name is one of London’s finest. Far from being a massive burial place for victims of The Black Death, the reality is not so dramatic: ‘black heath’ simply means ‘dark soil’. True: However, being on a major route to the City of London from the south, Blackheath has seen a lot of action. Rebel gatherings, military encampments and exercises would take place on the high plains of Blackheath. It was also an area associated with highwaymen who terrorised the neighbours in the 17th and 18th centuries. The two most infamous highwaymen ‒ Thomas Rowden and Dick Turpin (remember the TV show?) – would target wealthy travellers coming in from Kent or the continent. Luckily, they have gone now. A secret: When we think of sport, Wimbledon,

The two most infamous highwaymen – Thomas Rowden and Dick Turpin – would target wealthy travellers coming in from Kent 12_LOCATE | WINTER 2014/2015

All clear: It looks peaceful now, but Blackheath (above) was once associated with highwaymen. Nowadays, you’re more likely to see football players from Blackheath Football Club (left)

Lords or Wembley may come to mind, but Blackheath? It is not well known that Blackheath has a string of associations with sporting activities. True: Golf was introduced into England at Blackheath in 1608. The Royal Blackheath Golf Club was one of the first golf associations established (1766) outside Scotland. It has been based in Eltham since 1923. Blackheath also gave its name to the first hockey club – established during the mid-19th century. Myth: Rugby was invented by a boy at Rugby school who simply picked up the ball and ran with it. Well, all I can say is, if I did that at my school, I would have been dropped from the team and not turned into a local hero! True: Where rugby was invented may be debatable, but one undeniable truth is that The Blackheath Football Club was founded in 1858 and is the oldest documented rugby club in England.

Also true: The Blackheath Football Club organised the world’s first rugby international in 1871. Blackheath’s link with sport does not stop there; it was also one of the 12 founding members of the Football Association in 1863 and, since 1981, Blackheath has been the starting point of the London Marathon. The area’s connections with athletics date back to the establishment of the Blackheath Harriers (now Blackheath and Bromley Harriers) in 1869. True: If all this talk of sport is making you hungry and thirsty, there are many great pubs to visit and do what we do best: talk about sport! Try The Railway, The Princess of Wales or The Hare & Billet. Mystery: One great riddle remains: What is The Blackheath Cavern? An underground drinking hole? Well, yes and no. The Blackheath Cavern was a chalk mine that became a curiosity and tourist attraction in the 19th century where people would pay to visit the deep, dark pit. It had a bar and was decorated with chandeliers and became known for its notorious parties. It was closed in 1854 after complaints.

Flower power player Among the many careers I’ve considered, floristry has always appealed: only a dislike of early mornings and cold fingers has put me off. But flower shops continue to enthral and Galton Flowers in Hampstead is no different. Located in charming Flask Walk, this jewel of a shop has a ‘fashion boutique’ feel. ‘The link between fashion and floristry is very important to me,’ says owner Sayeh Rafiei. ‘We change the flowers we use from season to season and we follow fashion colour trends, too. We watch designers like Louis Vuitton and Chanel, and we take inspiration from their fabrics and colour palettes.’ Galton Flowers has six floral designers who create breathtaking wedding flowers and displays at the shop and at its sister shops in Westfield and Brent Cross. Sayeh also runs a floristry academy from Hampstead. So, what makes Hampstead such an inspiring location? ‘Lots of writers and artists live here so it’s a very creative area – our shop has been used as a film location several times already,’ says Sayeh. Not only that, the shop front recently played host to a decorated Felicity J Lord bicycle – a chic combination of heather, ivy Tex t i l e d e s i g n e r E m i l y and moss that looked too pretty to ride. Humphrey designed textiles For Sayeh’s customers, though, some in-house with Paul Smith and classics will never go out of fashion. ‘Our Ted Baker before setting customers love very natural hand-tied about realising her dream bouquets. But whatever we create, we of bringing her characterful always add our own twist.’ Aileen Scoular prints into people’s homes. While the exquisite handmade oak Versailles panels that graced the stage at The Old Vic theatre may be available in only limited quantities, there are many other beautiful flooring products with an equally diverse history. ‘A lot of our products come from unusual sources,’ says showroom manager Jessica Reynolds. ‘Our owner, Rob Henry, goes all over the world and finds new things. The Reclaimed Flooring Company, We’ve had herringbone parquet 64 Clerkenwell Road EC1, from a Victorian toy factory and 020 7250 1108, reclaimedflooringco.com flooring from old cotton mills in the north of England. We even sell oak flooring made from very large French wine barrels!’ The Reclaimed Flooring Company sells new flooring products, too: its engineered and solid wood ranges are all hand-finished and where colour tones exist, the team has developed a complex colour-layering process. ‘On our grey floorboards, for example, there could be as many as 13 colour layers,’ says Jessica. No wonder the many architects and interior designers that work close to the company’s Clerkenwell showroom find this imaginative collection impossible to resist. The herringbone parquet, which complements London’s many 1930s homes, is currently selling well, as is a unique product called ‘Castle’, which has a gently undulated surface. ‘We created it for a Grade I-listed property in Bath and it really does look like an original wooden floor would look after 100 years,’ explains Jessica.

Hip to be Triangle Who doesn’t love a truly original lifestyle shop? Triangle in Hackney is a gem of a store, with a carefully curated collection of vintage mid-century modern furniture alongside exclusive jewellery and quirky homewares. The shop is the brainchild of three friends – Matthew Naylor, Victoria Mullen and Mary Wagstaff – who share the same taste in eclectic interiors. ‘We’ve been friends for a very long time,’ says Victoria. ‘Each of us have a passion for mid-century furniture and the shop is a result of our burgeoning collections and our small homes! We decided it was time to share some of our amazing finds.’ Triangle supports independent local designers, and it only sells products the friends love. The shop’s location on Hackney’s dynamic Chatsworth Triangle, Road was an equally personal 92a Chatsworth Road E5, choice: ‘We’ve all lived in the trianglestore.co.uk area for many years and we’re part of the community,’ says Mary. ‘It has changed over the years, but still feels unique. We have lots of loyal local shoppers, and Triangle is now getting known further afield.’ Next time you pop in, look out for Triangle’s jewellery collection, designed in collaboration with local designer Karin Andréasson, hip graphic art, uber-cool Scandinavian finds and a collection of gorgeous Welsh-made wool blankets. And always expect to discover the unexpected. ‘We hunt far and wide for the best vintage products out there,’ says Victoria. ‘We challenge ourselves to find the most unusual items, as well as design classics.’

Hot property Fancy life by the river in 2015? The Wharf E5 is a stylish collection of one- and two-bedroom apartments beside the beautiful River Lea. Surrounded by river paths, grasslands and nature reserves, it’s hard to believe you’re just minutes away from central London. Located in trendy Lea Bridge, the apartments (from £310,000) have been intelligently designed to create a sense of relaxed ease. For more information, contact Felicity J Lord, Hackney, 020 8968 2698

Beauty and the feast Perhaps one of the most beautiful bars in London, Bourne & Hollingsworth Buildings is a bar-cum-brasserie-cum-generally-glamoroushang-out. The décor does away with the two-a-penny filament light bulbs and exposed brickwork that have become ubiquitous in London’s bar scene, in favour of a bleached-white canvas dotted with luxury archive prints, well-worn wicker tables and chairs, and flashes of shiny ironwork. Much can be said about the menu, too. Alex Visciano is in charge in the kitchen and, thanks to him, we savoured starters of rabbit and hazelnut terrine, and marinated squid salad, which took us • • • • • • • •• • • nicely by surprise with its subtle spicing. For mains, the lamb cannon with minted crust came with a dainty ratatouille, and a curry A welcoming pub with open fireplaces that had tangs of pineapple and red and regularly updated menus using pepper coulis. For dessert, the lime and seasonal ingredients sound like your verdi bella olive cheesecake balances salt kind of place? Then treat yourself to a with citrus and you may need some time visit to the newly reopened (and much alone with the chocolate ganache to fully missed when it was closed) Anglesea appreciate its hypnotic richness.

Arms where chef Phil Harrison is offering just that. Of his new menus, Phil jokes: ‘We’d describe our cooking style as delicious! But I don’t think that’s a widely recognised category – so I guess it would be modern British with a Mediterranean influence.’ Recent highlights include smoked eel with curried duck egg mayonnaise; braised herb-crusted rabbit leg with soft polenta and grilled white cabbage; and fig tarte tatin with orange and stem ginger mascarpone. Non-foodies are welcome too, and the bar offers an impressive selection of cask-conditioned real ales. The Anglesea Arms has almost 100% positive feedback on Trip Advisor. Coming up Rosa’s It started out as a humble street food stall on Brick Lane, then won our hearts with bricks-and-mortar restaurants there and at Westfield, Stratford City. Now Rosa’s Thai Café has set up shop in a Grade II-listed building on Fulham Road – complete with terrazzo flooring, chalked up menus and artwork specially commissioned from Thailand – meaning lucky southwest Londoners can now enjoy Rosa’s top-notch noodles and curries without stepping foot outside of the Royal Borough.

Butcher, baker, flavour-maker... As London villagers, by now we should be used to hipster foodies transforming abandoned fishmongers, butchers and candlestick makers into glorious temples of food worship, yet here comes another to surprise. Fink’s Salt and Sweet is a day and night deli and eatery taking residence in a former Victorian meat emporium. You can find it along the strip of road that links Stoke Newington to Finsbury Park – recently given a new lease of life thanks to lots of spangly shops and hangouts. There’s a sociable kitchen-table approach to eating, chit-chatting and

generally getting stuck in and, as the colder months are a time of feasting, the eatery’s Matthew Appleton has promised lots of full-flavoured hearty fare including

Red Door

Proving that you can get the best of both – or indeed three – worlds, Red Door is where to go to get your food, music and art kicks all at once. Ten years ago, this cosy corner of Turnpin Lane in Greenwich began life as a gallery and gift shop, but soon branched out to include a café. Most recently, it has evolved into a performance space for the likes of Corrie Dick, Scottish jazz musician of the year (2014), as well as an occasional pop-up restaurant. If you’re there to eat, expect Monmouth Coffee, tea served in vintage china pots, plus a platter of vegan and wheat- and gluten-free cakes. There’s also a selection of hot and cold sandwiches on artisan breads. Once you’re full, head to the sitting room where a record player, an eclectic vinyl collection and Red Door, 10 Turnpin Lane free Wi-Fi all add to the homely touches. A1 ale Beer lovers will find a lot to keep them happy at The White Horse. They take the amber nectar very seriously indeed and offer around 135 bottle options, plus loads of ales and beers on tap – they even host four beer festivals each year (the next one is in March). Unusually, they also do beer-matching with the dishes on their menus – their friendly, knowledgeable staff are happy to talk you through what will work with your meal. Those menus feature seasonal ingredients in dishes such as Cornish sardine fillet with borage salad, and pan-roasted lamb rump with aubergine caviar, peppers and heritage tomatoes. Highlights of Locate’s visit were the pork, apple and leek terrine, and apple and berry crumble with vanilla cream. WHAT AN AGENT EATS (& DRINKS) ‘I like all kinds of food, but if I had to choose one, it would have to be Japanese. I don’t have much time for lunch during the week, but I might grab a baguette or salad from PAUL on the high street, as it’s near the office and offers speedy service. On a Friday after a busy week, I like to join the Hampstead team for a quick afterwork drink at The Holly Bush or Duke of Hamilton, with a pint of cask ale.’ Jason Lewis, Senior Branch Manager, Felicity J Lord Hampstead, 020 7443 9001

What’s the story behind CRAFT London? The general idea is to work with modern craftspeople on processes such as coffee roasting, smoking, meat curing, kitchen gardening and fermentation. It’s about celebrating modern crafts in food production, but also manufacturing and processing. We’re roasting coffee, growing food, building curing rooms and a smoke house, brewing beer and more. What makes CRAFT London different? So many things. It’s in a beautiful new building by architects Marks Barfield, with a killer fit-out from Tom Dixon and Design Research Studio, next to a new park by urban gardener Alys Fowler and opposite the new NOW Gallery. We’re setting up to produce more than any other restaurant in the UK, to an incredibly high quality. What’s all this about CRAFT London being a two-phase project? Phase one focuses on great atmosphere and friendly staff, among huge loaves of crusty, slow-proved, wood-baked, spelt flour and sourdough bread. We have exciting things in the pipeline for the next phase – you’ll just have to wait and see! What’s your favourite part of London? Hackney, though Greenwich Peninsula gets more exciting by the day. My perfect day would be a morning with my kids in Victoria Park, lunch at the Pavilion Café, swimming in the Olympic pool, again with the kids, and dinner at The Clove Club in Shoreditch with my wife. The Pet Spa Tell us some of your favourite places in your ‘village’.

My favourite restaurants are Riccardo’s and Lucio, both at Chelsea Cross. Both welcome dogs and do fabulous food. Most of the shops in our area are pet-friendly and there is a fantastic new bar called Bacchus Lounge, which is very friendly with great wine and they love pets – so it’s all good! 96 FULHAM ROAD SW3, 0845 838 2330, PETSPALONDON.COM

86_LOCATE | WINTER 2014/2015

Who are you? Stephanie Mehanna, owner of The Pet Spa, Fulham Road. How did you get here? I worked in the City for years, and in New York for law firms, mainly in project management and learning and development. But the City lost its charm and I wanted to try a different life, one working with animals and doing something I loved. I was looking for a good-quality pet groomer for my dogs, and couldn’t find one anywhere that I felt met my needs in terms of customer service, product quality or health and safety. What do you do? So I came up with the idea of The Pet Spa is London’s premier opening my own! I went to the US to work with a pet spa grooming and spa retreat for and came back and opened pampered pets. We provide mine. I was asked to open a a full range of pet care services branch in Harrods and was there for nearly four years. including full-body grooms, We moved to our new wash and fluff-drys, spa Chelsea location when treatments, a doggie crèche and Harrods closed the entire pet our own brand of canine cookies. department in favour of more fashion. Our new premises have allowed us to expand our treatments and we have opened a training academy, too. We are also about to launch a pet modelling agency and a photography studio. Tell us about your house mates... I share my house with my dogs (I have three, two Irish setters and a rescue dog from a Greek island rubbish tip). What services does The Pet Spa offer? Our most famous service is our Spa Day Experience package, which includes lunch, blueberry facial, pawdicure, warm towel wrap and coat conditioning aromatherapy bath. We groom dogs, cats and rabbits from all around the local area, every breed from big security dogs to tiny chihuahuas. Tell us about your Spring MOT… Our Spring MOT includes our full body groom, a lavender coat shine bath, a vanilla and orange facial and a spritz of our Pet Spa paw-fume. It is the ultimate treatment to refresh and revive your pet’s coat. What do you love about your work? Cuddling all the pets every day. What do you love about your neighbourhood? The Pet Spa is located on Fulham Road, at Chelsea Cross, and I love the quiet streets nearby, the gardens around Royal Brompton Hospital and the restaurants and bars for socialising after work. Where are the best places for dogs to hang out in London? See above. Hyde Park on a weekday when it’s quieter, Hampstead Heath, or at The Pet Spa! Why do you love living in London? It is vibrant, alive and never sleeps. Never mind New York, London is the place to be.

WE KNOW WHY PEOPLE LOVE LIVING IN LONDON’S VILLAGES London is such an amazing place because it’s not really one place at all. It’s a collection of neighbourhoods, each with their own character and charm. And at the centre of those neighbourhoods are the villages that Londoners are fiercely loyal to. Our success is rooted in our understanding of London’s villages. It’s not just about knowing schools, shops or transport; every agent should know these things. It’s about appreciating an area’s heritage, seeing the shifting shape of things today and most crucially, it’s about having a real grasp of why people love living there. It’s that knowledge of why people love living in London’s villages that we turn to our clients’ advantage to help them buy, sell, let and rent property in those areas. We operate in the following villages. They are distinctive areas each with their own property and each attracting a particular group of clients.
