76 PAGES OF GREAT BRITISH HOMES

The cover 58 Llantrisant Road, Llandaff

Welcome to The Place, the inspiring magazine from Chewton Rose. In our latest issue you’ll find a selection of exciting dates for your diary, from an exhibition of Ming masterpieces to a winter wonderland in south Wales. Wherever you are, you’ll find something that’s not to be missed. Our guide to a brilliant autumn starts on page 7. And, of course, on our The Property pages you’ll find indispensable advice and style tips from experts to help you create an interior to be proud of. As the days get shorter, and our ‘nesting instinct’ inevitably begins to kick in, we turn our attention to the bedroom. Often woefully overlooked when it comes to an interior scheme, this is the room where we can really express ourselves. For some, the bedroom is an opulent boudoir, all mood lighting and feminine fabrics. For others, it’s a cool, pared-down retreat from the outside world. Whatever type of bedroom you are dreaming of, our The Room feature (page 24) should give you some great ideas. Once you’ve created your ultimate bedroom, you might be tempted to close all the doors and retire with a good book or DVD box set, but before you do, there’s still time to create an equally impressive garden. Our feature on page 26 tells you everything you need to know about commissioning a garden designer – and where to find the right one for you. Act now, and you’ll have a great outdoors that will bring you pleasure for years to come (and add value to your home). Autumn’s cooler days bring with them the perfect excuse to start eating heartier suppers (and lunches), and once again we’ve rounded up the best restaurants and bars around the Chewton Rose areas, including a restored 17th-century inn in West Sussex and luxurious private dining in London’s trendy Shoreditch. We’ve also worked with the clever people at Christopher’s in London’s Covent Garden to create the ‘Red Deer Martini’ exclusively for The Place (see below) – it’s only on the menu for a limited time, so be sure to try one while you have the chance. (We’ve included the recipe, too, so you can recreate it at home.) As ever, this issue also contains an unparalleled selection of Great British Homes for sale with Chewton Rose as well as insider knowledge from our expert agents. If you’re wondering whether now is a good time to put your house on the market or, indeed, whether your house is ‘right’ for Chewton Rose, you’ll find the answers in our The Knowledge section (page 34). Enjoy the issue, and have an amazing autumn.

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: The decor of the dining room gives the space a regal air; formal and informal sofas are used in the sitting room to great effect; Loddon House's grand exterior is more than matched by the decoration throughout the property, and a wealth of windows allow lots of light to flood in; an impressive hallway has been restored to reflect a graceful charm

Loddon House, Loddon, £1,650,000 Contact: Anna-Marie Catchpole, Chewton Rose, Norwich branch, 01603 622017, norwich@ chewtonrose.co.uk

There is zero surprise that Loddon House, a grandiose Grade II listed 10-bedroom property, is a landmark in the Norfolk village from which it takes its name. Set in 1.7 acres of landscaped gardens, complete with Victorian glasshouse, the Georgian house that dates from 1706 is standout spectacular. A large part of that spectacle comes from the magnificent windows and the light they afford. That they remain is the result of a twist of fate some 30 years after the house was first built for an attorney, when it was turned into a hospital, making it exempt from window tax. ‘Two of the original owner’s daughters, Sarah and Henrietta, scratched their names in the glass in the windows on the landing, which can still be seen,’ says Esther Tan, who has lived here with her family since 2000. ‘My daughter was born here and I named her after Henrietta.’ The house had been used as offices when Esther and Tim Worthington-Chapman bought and set about restoring it. ‘We wanted to put it back to the way it would have been in Georgian times, also ensuring it was a comfortable place to be,’ Esther says. They were in luck. The windows weren’t the only original features intact. A sweeping staircase and balustrade, ornate fireplaces and decorative plasterwork offered Esther a canvas on which to stamp their personality. The result is masterful. Neutral, soft yellow shades and rich magentas are woven seamlessly together on walls and in soft furnishings and carpets throughout the ground floor. In the sitting room, formal and informal sofas and chairs dovetail with colour-coded patterned curtains, dark-wood tables and bookcases, and gilded picture frames and mirrors. The regal dining room is drop-dead dramatic. A large polished table, with seating for 12, at its centre, its deep-hued walls offset by the printed drapes and pelmets that dress the sash windows. The elegant hallway is lined with beautifully upholstered chairs and chaises longues, echoed by the full-colour softly draped curtains adorning the windows that run along one wall. The hardwood floor is punctured by rich, intricately woven rugs. Light floods the whole house, the guest bedroom has triple windows, and the master bedroom its own suite of rooms. The higher you go, the less formal it becomes. ‘The rooms at the top are more cottage-like and have the best views of Loddon,’ says Esther. ‘It is a beautiful house.’ There is more. The kitchen is state-of-the-art sleek, there is a showstopping heated indoor swimming pool built in the style of an orangery, a coach house and a clock house, both self-contained, both with two bedrooms, shower room, kitchen and living area. Loddon is a small market town within the Broads conservation area. ‘We’ve enjoyed being here so much,’ Esther says. ‘Loddon is a great place, with very good schools, shops and services.’ It is also just 12 miles southeast of Norwich for an easy getaway. Though once you’re here at Loddon House, getting away won’t cross your mind.

For more than 15 years, Susie has been creating beautiful and inspiring editorial features and advertising campaigns for magazines such as Livingetc and brands such as Sony, Waitrose and MTV. Q I’d like to buy a statement rug to warm up my stripped floor for autumn. What are the current trends and what designs should I look out for? Jenny Rymald, Norwich Statement rugs are a great way of adding some warmth to a room, especially when you have floorboards or tiles on the floor. Moroccan rugs are really desirable right now, as they showcase the geometric shapes that are on trend this season. The patterns are bold, but adding them to your room with a statement rug is a great way of not overdoing the look. Keep the pattern monochrome or within a muted palette, so the rug will be timeless. A Moroccan Berber rug is a great example of this: a simple diamond-pattern design on a long-piled rug will give you a cosy feel in any room with stripped floorboards. The larger-sized rug you use, the more impact you’ll create in your room; anything too small will lose this effect. 14 www.chewtonrose.co.uk

LEFT: Tongue and groove is an ideal alternative to wallpaper and adds interest, as well as texture, to a room

Q We are considering tongue and groove as an alternative to wallpaper in our hall. Would this work? Josh and Fiona Wright, Chesham Tongue and groove is a perfect option if you want to avoid wallpaper, as it brilliantly adds texture and pattern to your walls. It can work in either a traditional or contemporary space and complements most interiors. Bespoke tongue and groove is obviously the best choice (ask your interior designer), though there are plenty of off-the-shelf options from larger DIY stores. Shopbought tongue and groove is easily cut to size and attached to your walls. There are two ways you can use it, and both work well depending on the look you are going for. Either choose it cut to height under the dado rail or run it right up to the picture rail height. You can add a small shelf to finish off the look. Either way, tongue and groove is a great way to add character or a focal point to a property and it is easily painted to fit in with your chosen colour scheme.

LEFT: Add an on-trend Moroccan rug to bring warmth and colour to stripped floorboards RIGHT: Cork flooring in a bathroom oozes simple style

Q I need to breathe some life into a tired guest bedroom. What can I do? Linda Cockburn, Horsham Guest bedrooms are brilliant places to experiment in by adding bold statements of colour and pattern – perfect for impressing your guests. As the room is not used every day, it is an ideal area to invest in some key statement pieces, such as a beautiful rug, bed throw or cushions. Treat your guests to exquisite pieces of textile design, as spotted at this year’s Milan Furniture Fair. These vibrant cushions (from £64) are by WRONG FOR HAY (www.wrongforhay.com) – a design collaboration between Danish brand HAY and London-based designer Sebastian Wrong.

ABOVE: Bold statement pieces, such as colourful cushions, can transform a guest bedroom

Q Any suggestions for an alternative to lino for our bathroom? Melanie Culshaw, Andover It’s important to get bathroom flooring right, but it’s often not given as much thought as it should be when considering your interior. Cork flooring is a great way to add warmth to the bathroom and is a bit different to the usual choices of tiles or vinyl flooring. Cork flooring can come in a variety of colours and has a lovely subtle, natural texture to its surface – it’s stylish and will be soft and warm underfoot. This cork flooring is from Portuguese brand GRANORTE (www.granorte.pt) and costs £71 per square metre. www.chewtonrose.co.uk 15

PER FECTION This old bakery has been turned into a desirable family home

Basking in a golden glow, courtesy of its toasted-orange-coloured carrstone, Alma House, the three-storey one-time Snettisham village bakery, is now a wonderful family home, after its owners, Caroline and Simon Jordan, fell in love with it on sight. Built in 1882, the house’s symmetrical, unfussy exterior cloaks a characterful, airy interior with vaulted ceilings, and original doors and windows throughout, its past life evident all around. ‘There are fireplaces in most rooms and you can still see the old bread ovens. We use them as shelves now,’ Caroline says. Most dazzling is the light. ‘The whole house is incredibly light; everyone who visits comments on it. It’s unusual for a house of this age.’ The layout affords the luxury of space. Style-wise, they have made it their own. There is a formal dining room and a sitting room, but much of the ground floor is taken up with a bespoke, handmade kitchen-cum-dining area, a perfect mix of traditional and modern with gem-bright chairs, that opens out on to a courtyard. In the corner, a cute spiral staircase leads to the first-floor drawing room. French windows and a Juliet as it is much more modern than the rest of the house.’ The house’s unique set-up makes hosting easy. With two bedrooms, one a master with en suite, and a shower room on the first floor, the family can stay together, leaving the second floor self-contained with two further bedrooms and a bathroom for guests. ‘We love the house and we love Snettisham because it’s a proper village. Secrets from the design expert, and how to bring her luxurious looks to your home

THIS SPACE

Anita Kohn’s life as an interior designer began some two decades ago. ‘I was actually working in fashion 20 years ago when the opportunity to enter the interior world came along. I was approached by a developer who brought me on board to furnish show homes and apartments,’ she recalls. ‘The move allowed me to apply my fashion training and creativity in a new way, which was both exciting and challenging.’ Anita formed her design practice, Living in Space, in 2001 and has built a reputation for style, quality and excellence. The Living in Space team (based in London’s Belsize Park) has tackled residential properties, commercial developments and stunning new homes – working from concept and design through to completed dream home or business, including final furniture, furnishings and accessories, should you wish. Anita prides herself on ‘our versatility. We strongly believe the art of design is to interpret the client’s vision and desires in order to create a scheme that is stylish, liveable and unique. No two projects are ever the same as they will always reflect the individuality of the client and that’s why having a team is essential. We pull individual strengths together so that we can develop anything from contemporary minimalist to traditional, classic schemes.’ Here she talks us through some of her recent projects. 20 www.chewtonrose.co.uk

BRICKFIELDS, RADLETT This kitchen and dining area features in our flagship luxury eco property, Brickfields. In line with the requirements for Level 5 on the Code for Sustainable Homes, the main challenge for this design was to create a space that was both stylish and practical, and with a reduced dependency on heating and lighting. We made the kitchen user-friendly by incorporating the most modern technology available, as well as energy-efficient appliances to fit the home’s eco credentials. We provided multiple storage spaces to ensure that the kitchen could be easily maintained and installed sensor lights in all the cupboards for convenience, effect and, of course, energy efficiency. We also ensured the majority of the outer walls were floor-to-ceiling glass windows, which allows light to flood in, reducing dependency on artificial lighting. The unique design of the glass walls – double glazed with film – also regulates heating levels to ensure no energy is wasted. As the property is located in the idyllic countryside village of Radlett, we utilised natural materials for the interiors to reflect the home’s rural surroundings and ecological elements to create a warm and inviting space.

BELSIZE PARK This bathroom was one of three in a property which upheld a contemporary look and featured opulent soft touches. In keeping with the rest of the home, we selected the black and gold scheme to give the space a sleek and sultry feel . As the room was without windows, we had to make sure the space didn’t feel dark and confined. We achieved this with downlighters and metallic mosaic tiles, which gave the illusion of dazzling lights while maintaining the space’s sensual atmosphere. ST JAMES’S This lavish living area in an apartment in St James’s in London, was designed for a client who intended to sell the property on. In order to appeal to a variety of buyers’ tastes, a neutral palette was crucial; however, injecting personality and flair into the interior was equally important, to steer away from an overly bland scheme. We achieved this by complementing shades of soft grey and beige with lustrous metallic furnishings, working with deluxe fabrics and accessories to give the property an extravagant identity, reflective of potential buyers. We transformed the central column with custom cladding; so rather than obscuring or ignoring the architectural support, we made this the pivotal point of the room. The mirrored facets not only make for a striking feature, but also allow light to bounce around the room, enhancing the entire space. For continuity, we selected a mirrored coffee table, which also helped create zones within the open layout of the apartment.

INTERIORS ADVICE FROM ANITA

ANITA'S HOME, HERTFORDSHIRE This kitchen is actually my own, so, needless to say, it was one of our easier projects! As my home is a converted barn, we were working with double-height ceilings and exposed beams. I wanted to utilise rustic features while making it suitable for modern living. We chose a cream theme to accentuate the lightness and airiness of the space, as well as to complement the oak beams. Black marble worktops were used as a contrast, and added to the kitchen’s practicality. As with any kitchen, here, storage was essential. In addition to the wall cupboards and those within the island, we incorporated wicker baskets as an attractive alternative.

The first and most important step when embarking upon any interiors project is to interpret the space and its purpose – who is the room for and how will they be enjoying the space? Take the bedroom, for example. As well as having the ‘wow’ factor, the room needs to feel comfortable and lived in, in order to fulfil its purpose as a place of sanctuary in the home. This can be achieved with a few statement features, such as a fabric panelled wall or a standout headboard, complemented with a warm palette and soft lighting. Never underestimate the power of lighting – it is one of the major features that determines a room’s mood and feel. As mentioned, soft lighting will always lead to a warm and inviting

atmosphere – perfect for bedrooms, living rooms and even bathrooms, as it can enhance a room’s purpose for relaxation. Hard lights will be best utilised in the kitchen to reflect its practical use. Continuity throughout the home is essential for maintaining harmony, so while each room should have its own identity, there should be a common theme and this is usually influenced by the type of property. I would always recommend a neutral palette and injecting colour with soft furnishings and accessories. Not only will this ensure that the room doesn’t become too fussy, but it also means that the look can be easily updated. www.living-inspace.co.uk www.chewtonrose.co.uk 21

WOR LDS The city centre is near, but a sense of space rules in this Welsh gem

If location is key, then Llandaff has it locked. Home to Doctor Who (BBC Wales HQ is here) and just a couple of miles northwest of Cardiff city centre, it has rolling hills, a river, a cathedral built in ıı07, a ton of history and a real community, villagey feel. At its heart is 58 Llantrisant Road, a striking detached house, set in a mature garden, that has been extended and renovated to the highest spec by owners Steph and James Turner. The result is a thoroughly modern, five-bedroom family home – a triumph for contemporary cool and open-plan living. The spacious reception hall sets the tone, sweeping through to the impressive kitchen with a central cooking island, dining table and chairs for eight, round to a hang-out area. The decor throughout, from porcelain floor tiles, with underfloor heating, to tables and soft furnishings, is neutral – cool greys and whites that give an air of tranquillity and calm. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood it with light, and French windows open out onto the garden, perfect for parties and outdoor summer living, with large lush lawns, a patio with day seats and loungers, a decked area, and a summer house. Bucking the trend, though not the glass doors and access to the garden, is a cosy sitting room off the hall. A cacophony of colour, it has original solid-oak floors from the 1950s and a fire. There is also a study and a formal dining room. The bedrooms, including a guestroom with wall-to-wall mirrored wardrobes, are on the first floor. The master bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and luxury en suite with both a bath and shower – further proof of the wonderful feeling of space here, evident to all who visit. ‘Someone once joked,’ smiles James, ‘that the en suite was bigger than their kitchen!’ 58 Llantrisant Road, Llandaff, £745,000 Contact: Craig Berrow, Chewton Rose, South Wales branch, 02920 226129, south.wales@chewtonrose.co.uk www.chewtonrose.co.uk 23

DREAMS Make your bedroom the ultimate personal haven

the perfect bedroom has many interpretations. For some, it is a cocoon, decorated in deep, sensuous colours and swathed in touchme textures. For others, it’s a simple space, bathed in chalky pastels and early-morning light. But, however it is styled, one factor remains constant: it is an inherently personal space. ‘Dining rooms used to be where people pushed the boundaries, but the bedroom is where clients are more adventurous now,’ explains interior designer Louis Henri (www.louishenri.com). ‘It’s your own personal space, so you can afford to indulge in a little bit of fantasy.’ Louis loves fabric walls, for example: ‘They can make a bedroom feel like a jewellery box,’ he says. ‘A place that is very safe and secure. I have heard that mentioned in a bedroom brief many times.’ Meanwhile, for Anita Kohn of Living in Space (www.living-inspace. co.uk), comfort is a priority. ‘Tranquil, calm, comfortable, luxurious and peaceful – these are the words I hear again and again from my clients,’ she says. (You can see more of Anita’s work on pages 20-21.) The bedroom is also a place where fashion is less important. ‘I think a bedroom should be designed in a timeless way, which lessens the anxiety of following particular trends,’ says designer Irina Townsend (www.keirtownsend.com). But there are still endless design possibilities. In a contemporary home, you could dispense with a headboard and hang a huge artwork behind the bed; a stencilled mural or blocks of painted colour create a similar effect. In an industrial setting, or a

room with lots of glass, leather, shearling or animal skin makes an effective, and tactile, replacement for fabric or wood. The best contemporary bedrooms also borrow from tradition: a buttoned headboard, oversized and emboldened by colour, or a modern take on the canopy bed, where frills and flounce are replaced by simple, draped fabric panels. In a rural home or a Victorian town house, a more relaxed approach is appropriate – print-clashed fabrics produce a modern spin on bohemian style, with cushions, feather eiderdowns and luxe wallpapered walls. A quirky printed fabric can elevate the simplest headboard into another dimension, while antique French bedsteads never lose their appeal. It is also possible to think entirely outside the box when designing a bedroom – Living in Space upcycled a beautiful antique mirror

CLOCKWISE FROM MAIN IMAGE: OKA blends opulent and exotic in this glitzy bedroom (www. okadirect.com); an oversized headboard from Vispring creates a unique bed; Keir Townsend contrasts a subtle colour palette with luxurious textures; sleek lines star in the new Rococo bedroom collection from Crown Imperial (www.crown-imperial.co.uk); Gingerlily’s elegant raspberry Leaves silk bed linen

frame, custom-creating a unique upholstered bedstead that provided plenty of wow in what was a relatively modest-sized bedroom. All three of our designers believe that custom-created furniture is essential. ‘Custom-built furniture is usually our preferred choice, because we can incorporate lighting and storage,’ says Anita. Louis agrees: ‘Everything we do is custom-built because it allows us to play with the scale of the furniture, and we can build in special features – like a hairdryer socket built into the bedside table, or a lined drawer that contains an iPad charging socket.’ Irina also asks her clients to select the very best mattress they can afford. ‘This is the one single factor that determines whether a bedroom is truly comfortable,’ she explains. Usefully, Occa By Hypnos now offers a bespoke mattress design service that includes longer, wider or specially shaped mattresses (www.occa-home. co.uk). And Vispring has created the Majesty mattress – handfilled with a blend of real Shetland wool, long-stranded horsetail, cashmere and silk. Combined with the President divan base and Berkeley headboard, this trio is available exclusively from Harrods at £80,000 (www.vispring.co.uk).

Lighting is also key – particularly in a decorat ing scheme with rich colours and textures that absorb light. ‘There should be ambient, focused and feature lighting,’ says Irina, while Louis points out that you should never be able to see a light bulb or light source in a bedroom. Finally, your dreams will be sweetest when you invest in luxury bed linen. White sheets with a high thread count never lose their charm. But while top-quality Egyptian cotton is a classic choice, silk is singularly special. The duvets and bed linen from Gingerlily (www. gingerlily.co.uk) are made from A-grade mulberry silk: they keep you warm in winter while drawing heat away from the body in summer. Silk bed linen also has health and beauty benefits: it helps to retain moisture in your skin, minimising wrinkles as you sleep, and reduces hair static. Now, that’s what we call a sublime sleeping experience. www.chewtonrose.co.uk 25

GR AND DESIGNS Are you dreaming of the quintessential English country garden, or perhaps something more cutting edge? Our expert, Kevin Smith, has some advice

If you really want to make the most of your outdoor space, there’s no doubt that hiring a professional garden designer will put you ahead of the game. From making seamless transitions between inside and out to creating a garden that’s practically useful or simply dripping with style, a designer should always be your first point of call. Garden designers primarily have the skills to create a garden that will fulfil your every need, but they’re also able to keep you abreast of the latest trends, innovations and products – your relationship with your garden designer could last a lifetime. A good one should ensure your garden is as on-trend and up to date as ABOVE: The expansive you want it to be. Just now, eco credentials garden of Hawkedon House Suffolk was designed by are at the forefront of what’s popular, inTom Hoblyn and makes the with many choosing to use sustainable most of the amazing views the surrounding rolling materials and create a garden that’s good for of hills and patchwork fields supporting wildlife and the environment. (www.thomashoblyn.com) 26 www.chewtonrose.co.uk

That doesn’t mean it has to be a messy wilderness – a contemporary eco-friendly garden can still have high design principles. Low-maintenance gardens are also in demand right now, with designers using their skills to create planting combinations that will fend for themselves while looking great year-round. Technology is changing our gardens, too, with low-maintenance plots incorporating automated gadgets to help with feeding and watering plants. Material choices are also important, and garden designers know the products that are sustainable in all conditions, requiring little to no maintenance to keep them looking great. The notion of an ‘outdoor room’ has also seen a surge in popularity (see the Spring 2014 issue of The Place for proof ), with clients tasking garden designers with creating spaces that can be used for eating, cooking, lounging and anything else you may do inside. Outdoor kitchens, comfy sofas, external lighting and stylish dining set-ups are all popular for making gardens true extensions of your home.

Latching on to a style is a key part of a good designer’s skill set, and creating a garden on a theme (ie country, minimal, formal or prairie) should come as no trouble. Garden designers will be able to combine plants, landscaping materials, furniture and accessories to ensure a space stays true to its concept and doesn’t become a jumble of ideas. They’ll also be able to work with the features of your home, knowing exactly what will work with properties of any given style or period. And let’s not forget the financial benefits of having a quality garden. It’ll add considerably to the value of your property and give you an edge over other similar houses with a substandard exterior. So how do you find a good garden designer and what should you ask them ahead of hiring? First off, head straight to www.sgd.org.uk – the website of The Society of Garden Designers allows you to search for a garden designer near you by entering your postcode. Registered designers (including the ones whose work is showcased on these pages) all have professional status and have been approved

If you do want a sculpture or water feature in your garden, talk to your designer at the consultation stage to ensure it is incorporated in the overall plan, and visit exhibitions and shows to see different styles (and sizes) of work. These shows will offer pieces for every taste and budget, from tens of pounds, to money no object. Or, of course, invest in a specially commissioned bespoke piece that will act as a sound investment for years to come. See more of Giles’s work at www.gilesrayner.com Find out more from Kevin at www.kevin-smith.co.uk

and assessed by the society – this means you’re guaranteed to be contacting someone with proven credentials. From this point on, the process is just like hiring any other tradesperson – ask to see and visit completed gardens, along with an explanation of their consultation process and fee structure. And make sure you talk to several designers, choosing the one you feel most comfortable and confident working with. Once you’ve hired a designer, the process is pretty simple. There’ll be an initial site visit and design consultation, where you explain what you want from your garden. This will be followed by a site survey and the drawing-up and honing of plans. Once the plans are agreed, another contractor will complete the build under the supervision of the designer before planting takes place. Each stage of the process will have a different fee attached to it (including a possible separate bill for the landscaping contractor), so be sure to pin these down before you commit. www.chewtonrose.co.uk 27

Voted Michelin Eating Out in Pubs Guide Pub of the Year 2014, just seven months after opening, The Greyhound on the Test is something rather special. Not only is Head Chef Alan Haughie’s commitment to sourcing and serving the season’s best produce evident as soon as you walk through the door, the team has also struck the right balance between retaining old world charm and creating a modern boutique feel. This goes for the inn’s lodgings, too: an honesty bar is stocked with artisanal spirits and mixers, and the seven rooms are cheerfully dressed in sage green and cherry red. In the bright and airy restaurant, menu highlights include the croque monsieur or the local Stockbridge mushrooms from the ‘On Toast’ section, ideal if you’re

popping in for a bite and a pint. Or, if you’re planning on whiling away an hour or three, the rotating daily specials showcase the kitchen’s talent at its best. Those partial to a spot of fly fishing will also note that this historic inn is nestled in the heart of fly fishing's mecca and boasts its own private beat, from which guests can cast until the end of September. If you’re new to the sport, courses are available (from £108 per rod) and place you in the good hands of Howard Taylor, founder of Upstream Dry Fly (and the kitchen will roast your catch). If you’re really getting into the spirit of country pursuits, four to 16 people can enjoy a ‘Blast and Cast’ day (£385 per person), which combines a morning’s clay pigeon shooting with a two-course lunch and an afternoon of fly fishing.

Sipping fizz and shucking Oysters Rockefeller while watching the world (and boats) go by is the perfect way to enjoy a long lunch or autumn evening. At this hotel, bistro and restaurant, you can kick back and soak up the views of the Stour and Orwell estuaries, and, if you time it right, you’ll get a stunning sunset thrown in. The first-floor Harbourside Restaurant is all buttery leather seating, laid-back neutrals and a pewter-lined bar, while long-standing Head Chef Jeff Goff works hard in the kitchen to draw out flavours from the finest seasonal ingredients. New menus are printed every morning, and skate, Dover sole and nuss (rock

In autumn, the menu moves into more heartwarming dishes and stews, while lobster thermidor retains the title as signature dish – whatever the season. AGENT’S SECRET

'From a "local colour" perspective, there are a number of excellent restaurants and pubs in this area,' says Jonathan Higginson of Chewton Rose, Leatherhead. 'If you love seafood, Bryce's Old School House in Ockley is justly renowned. Lovers of traditional food with a modern twist, meanwhile, might enjoy Chequers in Rowhook. If you fancy spotting local celebrities, La Capanna restaurant in Cobham is really worth a visit and attracts the likes of Gary Lineker and Abbey Clancy (and, rumour has it, Frank Sinatra). The Withies Inn, Compton, is also excellent.'

Having spent the past year dashing between pop-ups and private dining clients, Michelin-starred chef James Sommerin returned to Wales in May to open the eponymous James Sommerin Restaurant and rooms. In this corner of South Wales, James cherry-picks from the best producers in the area to create three seasonally inspired tasting menus. Named in Welsh after the dramatic natural scenery, diners can choose from Traeth (beach), Clogwyn (cliff) or Pen-y-garth (clifftop). Alongside some of the best catches of the day, fresh from the sea that morning, hero ingredients on those menus include Pant-Ys-Gawn goat's cheese from nearby Abergavenny and, of course, Welsh lamb when the season is right. The wine list has been carefully considered, too, with the team selecting vintages from small and independent producers of the organic and biodynamic variety. Throw in a panoramic view of the Severn Estuary, and nine plush rooms-witha-view, and you're getting dangerously close to perfection. A RARE VINTAGE There is something so glamorous about a bottle of champagne – we drink more of it than ever before – and P2 from Dom Pérignon is very glamorous indeed. In the words of Dom Pérignon Chef de Cave Richard Geoffroy, the second release of the luxury champagne house’s now legendary 1998 vintage (a hot, rainy, hot weather pattern meant the grapes matured more than usual) is ‘intriguing, with mineral notes, it’s incredibly creamy. Edgy, yet embracing. Quite simply, it redefines champagne.’ Expect to pay £260 to be edgily embraced. www.domperignon.com 30 www.chewtonrose.co.uk

What was once a Victorian farmhouse has been transformed into Titchwell Manor, a styleconscious boutique retreat with infinite views across the open marshes to the North Sea. Each of the 27 bedrooms has been given its own look, from the big and bold schemes of the manor rooms to the soothing neutral palettes of those bordering the herb garden. While guests snuggle in, self-taught Head Chef Eric Snaith oversees the hotel’s two restaurants. There's the easygoing Eating Rooms and the well-to-do Conservatory, where you can meander through an eclectic four- or eight-course tasting menu while gazing into the walled garden. Eric’s style of cooking is decidedly cutting edge, and he tries and tests the latest techniques before bringing them to discerning diners. Last autumn, Eric launched the Supper Clubs and this year they’re back, with Eric playing host to guest chefs from around the country, including Michelin-starred Mark Poynton from Alimentum in Cambridge (October), Russell Bateman from The Grove in Hertfordshire (November) and Paul Foster from The Dining Room at Mallory, Warwickshire (late January). How do contemporary European dishes served in a 16th-century Tudor farmhouse sound? Husband and wife team Fernando and Kristy Stovell met at Westminster Catering College in 1997, and have since manned the kitchens in high-profile restaurants, and worked as private chefs for celebrities and heads of state. At Stovell’s it’s a family affair with a champagne list dedicated to Fernando’s grandmother and a selection of whiskies dedicated to Kristy’s grandparents. With their newest opening, the pair have their sights set on taking cooking to the next level, reinterpreting culinary classics with confidence and imagination. Bold flavours are balanced with innovative ingredients, such as caramelised hand-caught scallops and south coast turbot, and they sit on the menu alongside hearty treats like aged rib of beef cooked in a clay oven grill over apple wood coals. To make it really special, Kristy and Fernando can devise a 10-course tasting menu to suit any taste or occasion and, better still, this can be done on the day, based on the best produce available that morning. BORDER CONTROL

Not many British pubs can claim to have a county border running through their bar, but this is just one of many things that sets The White Post apart. Straddling two counties, Dorset and Somerset, this traditional English inn was spruced up earlier this year to offer locals, and visitors to the West Country, an updated 'second home'. Whether you’re popping in for breakfast, lunch, dinner or all three, the Sutton family will see you right with a menu that is modern, British and has a sense of humour. If you’re visiting with children, portions and prices of the standard menu are reduced. Head Chef Brett Sutton is also partial to a bit of foraging, so you can be assured that whether you brave the great outdoors, or stay curled up beside the wood-burning stove, you can sample the season's best. Baslow Hall is an Edwardian four-star manor house hotel renowned for its traditional take on luxury, and in its Michelinstarred restaurant things are no different. Head Chef Rupert Rowley creates classic dishes using modern techniques, such as English guinea fowl, breast of Goosnargh duck and rib of Derbyshire beef. There’s a real commitment to locally sourced produce, too, and root vegetables, herbs, fruit and honey are all grown or harvested on site at Baslow Hall gardens. If you fancy sampling British ingredients at their best, don’t miss the Taste of Britain lunch menu, which is available to order for a whole table with matching wines. Owners Max and Susan Fischer are passionate about the environment and have a ‘Fischers Go Green’ policy that has seen the hotel halve its landfill waste. They have a Peak District Environmental Quality Mark.

THE TESTIMONIAL ‘We authorised Chewton Rose to sell our apartment in Nashdom Abbey last year.  They were extremely professional, always gave us 100% attention, and I cannot speak highly enough of everyone in the Gerrards Cross office.  I would not hesitate to recommend them.’ Maureen Slater, Taplow

FLOWER POWER

This year’s RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, which took place in July, was rather special for Chewton Rose. Kim Dewing, Head of Marketing (pictured), explains: ‘Many estate agents give clients a bottle of champagne or a bunch of flowers to welcome them to their new home, but I’m not aware of any agents who have a rose exclusively bred and named for them.’ The bloom in question – the Chewton Rose – was unveiled at Hampton Court, even making an appearance on the BBC. The flowers are red with semi-double blooms and dark green foliage. Each bush grows to around 120cm tall and wide.

THE AGENTS’ ADVICE WORDS OF WISDOM FROM CHEWTON ROSE’S PEOPLE I’m looking to move but considering more than one area. Can you help? ‘Yes, certainly!’ says Belinda Bishop of Chewton Rose Cardiff. ‘In south Wales we have a strong coverage in several areas. We are confident we can find you the right property to fit all your requirements.’ Graham Nash is equally confident of being able to help you in his area: ‘In Milton Keynes you have lots of areas to consider. We have homes of all kinds in the surrounding villages as well as in Milton Keynes itself.’ Hilary Wagner of Chewton Rose East Sussex advises: ‘If you don’t know the areas, drive around villages before making appointments, and get a feel for travel options so you can gauge convenience and lifestyle of your options.’ Of Colchester, Matthew Sutton adds: ‘Our knowledge of the areas we sell in will most likely bring a lot of options for properties to view, as well as some wild cards.’ Malcolm Campbell, of Gerrards Cross Chewton Rose, speaks for all offices when he says: ‘Our office covers a wide catchment, but we can also alert 34 www.chewtonrose.co.uk

other branches to cast the net more or less as wide as the applicant prefers.’ Is there a price point for properties Chewton Rose sells? ‘No. Any house has the potential to be a great British home and our aim is to highlight the unique attributes that every house offers, as well as its history,’ says Matthew Sutton. ‘We work hard to ensure that each home stands out from the competition in order to maximise interest from potential purchasers.’ Adrian Geary of

Chewton Rose Winchester echoes those sentiments: ‘For us, it isn’t a question of price. It is about the DNA that runs through our business – where we are the most effective agent at selling historic and unique, classic British houses. It is about helping clients throughout their propertyowning cycle.’ Malcolm Campbell agrees: ‘We are very keen to promote the lifestyle a home affords and therefore offer properties that form a wide range of values.’ Graham Nash offers: ‘In Milton Keynes, we may be better known for £600,000+ homes, but we find a huge demand for properties in the £450,000-£550,000 bracket and we would love to take on more in this range.’ And if Surrey is on your wish list, Jonathan Higginson of Leatherhead Chewton Rose adds: ‘Surrey is not just about country estates, as there are villages with pretty cottages, striking churches and good country pubs. For as little as £350,000, you can call this picturesque corner of Britain your home.’

Is autumn a good time to put my property on the market? ‘Yes,’ says Jonathan Higginson, ‘autumn is traditionally an excellent time to market your home as many people have returned from their summer holidays and are looking to move and settle before the onslaught of the Christmas and New Year festivities.’ Anna-Marie Catchpole of Chewton Rose Norwich goes further: ‘It’s a great time to put your property on the market – in fact, autumn is one of the busiest times of year as those purchasers who haven’t found their ideal home in the summer will be busy looking to move before Christmas.’ Malcolm Campbell offers a different perspective: ‘The weather tends to remain good and homes in rural areas can look particularly attractive among the changing colours of leafy autumn under a low sun.’ Hilary Wagner also has her eye on the great outdoors at this time of year: ‘There is an upsurge of interest when children have gone back to school after the summer holidays, the gardens are still attractive and there is motivation to move before the Christmas period.’

‘My wife and I wish to express our appreciation and thanks to Harriet Clear, of Chewton Rose Leatherhead, who worked tirelessly throughout the process of our purchase. During the five months our purchase took, there were many times when we were left wondering if it would ever happen. Harriet remained calm, understanding and very helpful during the entire duration, always striving to assist where she could. She also worked behind the scenes, keeping in contact with our vendor’s solicitor and our selling agents, all the while keeping us informed.’ Mr and Mrs L Williams, Dorking, Surrey ‘We chose Chewton Rose in Norwich because their confident approach stood out from the other local agents we considered. In particular, we felt that their photographs and marketing were of an extremely high standard and captured the amount of light and space available in our barn. The commitment of the staff was outstanding. They were positive, enthusiastic and extremely effective at encouraging prospective buyers to view our barn. They were excellent at arranging significantly more viewings than we ever expected, and they gave us quick and salient feedback as things progressed. We would certainly use Chewton Rose in Norwich again in any future property sale!’ Anne Mullan, Norwich

Meet the area managers Introducing Guy Leaning and Richard Olliffe, who are helping to keep Chewton Rose ahead of the game WHO ARE YOU? Richard Olliffe, Area Partner, Chewton Rose North Division.

good way – I want more, I want better. Once I reach a goal, I want to surpass it, not to please anyone but myself.

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE WITHIN CHEWTON ROSE? I support the efficient running of Chewton Rose by taking responsibility of the North Division – Colchester, Norwich, Milton Keynes, South Wales, West Essex and West Bridford. My role includes many things, but the main area of running the North Division is based around developing the offices and staff and ensuring that we grow in the right areas.

WHERE DO YOU LIVE, AND WHAT IS YOUR HOME LIKE? I live in a beautiful village called Paulerspury in Northamptonshire. My home is a new stone build with a modern feel. The best part about it are the bi-folding doors that lead onto our decking area.

DESCRIBE WORKING FOR CHEWTON ROSE IN THREE WORDS Challenging, inspiring, rewarding. HOW DID YOU GET WHERE YOU ARE TODAY? By waking up with a smile on my face. Focus, knowledge and execution. WHAT’S THE BEST BIT OF YOUR JOB? What I love most about working in my job is our people, and the fact that our industry changes all the time. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR WORKING STYLE? I consider myself a nice person, always trying to help others. I want people happy and smiling (I prefer laughing, but I’ll take a smile anytime). I can never settle – in a

WHAT DO YOU DO TO RELAX? I work hard all week and am constantly thinking about work of an evening. But at weekends I enjoy spending time with my family and our new son, Finley. When I’m on holiday I disconnect from business and when I get time to play golf I find this extremely relaxing. YOU USED TO BE IN THE ARMY. WHAT DID YOU DO AND HOW LONG FOR? I joined at the minimum age required – 16 years and nine months – after completing intensive training courses, and then joined the Grenadier Guards, a front-line infantry regiment. I spent five years conducting operations all over the world. I then joined a close protection company and worked in Afghanistan, Iraq and London. BACK TO CHEWTON ROSE, WHAT MAKES YOU DIFFERENT FROM OTHER AGENTS? Chewton Rose is about breaking the mould, driving innovation, competition and outstanding customer service in estate agency. We have some of the best estate agents working for our company. This, coupled with our lifestyle marketing, makes us an unstoppable outfit. WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR CHEWTON ROSE? I asked this question to my CEO and his reply was to have a Chewton Rose office in every city in the UK. That’s a vision that I would like to be a part of.

WHO ARE YOU? Guy Leaning, Area Partner, Chewton Rose South Division. WHAT IS YOUR ROLE WITHIN CHEWTON ROSE? I run the Southern Region of Chewton Rose and thrive on working with my excellent teams across five counties. I look after the offices in Cobham, Leatherhead, Gerrards Cross, Horsham, Wadhurst and Winchester. DESCRIBE WORKING FOR CHEWTON ROSE IN THREE WORDS Structured, challenging, motivational. HOW DID YOU GET WHERE YOU ARE TODAY? Seeing the opportunity and going for it, working with my teams and always focusing on exceeding my goals. WHAT’S THE BEST BIT OF YOUR JOB? Seeing the improvement that is so clearly being shown from areas that I have implemented. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR WORKING STYLE? I am a well-seasoned and experienced professional in the property industry, with a track record of achievement second to none, such as in exemplary leadership, giving me the loyalty, support and commitment of my teams. Depth of knowledge of the industry is invaluable to Chewton Rose, which I share within our workshops and meetings. I’m a recognised figure in the industry within the Home Counties and I am dedicated to leading from the front

and care about the community, which is demonstrated by participation in charity events such as for Magic Moments and supporting local school Reed’s. WHERE DO YOU LIVE, AND WHAT IS YOUR HOME LIKE? I live near Guildford in a section of a Georgian house, with my soulmate, Marcela, and our dog, Tills. WHAT DO YOU DO TO RELAX? I am a mad keen mountain biker/ road cyclist and the hills around Surrey and West Sussex are my playground for exercise and relaxation. WE HEAR YOU’RE A KEEN FLYER. TELL US ABOUT THIS… My wonderful dad was a squadron leader in World War II and this has been a big part of my life. A friend of mine has a Gazelle helicopter and I have done many hours flying from Goodwood and, on a few occasions, I’ve flown on Salisbury Plain doing aerobatics. I love the sound of a Merlin engine! BACK TO CHEWTON ROSE, WHAT MAKES YOU DIFFERENT FROM OTHER AGENTS? We are more streetwise than others and, in a people industry, I believe that we really understand them. WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR CHEWTON ROSE? To become the agent of choice within the areas that we operate, provide an exceptional level of client care and develop a business that our clients recommend and continue to write their testimonials about. www.chewtonrose.co.uk 35

Where do you live? In an ex-police station in a small village in a broad, bosky valley in Gloucestershire. The village has a thriving shop, a brewery, a pub and a church. What more do you need? My interior style is… haphazard! Or perhaps organic might be a better description. I don’t have any visual imagination, and so have no grand unifying vision. Each room is in a constant state of evolution until it feels comfortable. The thing I really love about my home… is that it’s mine (although, in strict truth, it’s NatWest’s, which holds the mortgage). I used to live in a pub, and so to end up in a police station seems a poetic comment on my passage through life. Is it a good home for entertaining in? Brilliant. It has the flexibility to cope with few or many. What’s your favourite dinner party dish to prepare? Good question. I’d have to say the next one. And who would be your dream dinner guests? My three brothers, my sister and their respective spouses and children. Luckily, they’re all still vigorously alive. What has been your most memorable meal? Lunch that I ate alone at Jamin in Paris in May 1986. The food was scintillatingly brilliant. I was brought a second helping of milk-fed lamb cutlets with pommes purée and truffle salad when I said how much I enjoyed it; and the mâitre d’ chattered to me in French. Some months later, I discovered by accident that he spoke perfect English. He had spoken French because he knew it would make me feel good. My fondest memory of my house… is each time I return to it having been away. My favourite city is… Rome. Whenever I arrive there, I feel weight coming off my shoulders. It’s such a beautiful, delightful, civilised, cynical place. You love Italy, tell us why? Because of the passion I saw from the owners of a café in Cervia when making ice cream in 1956. My current favourite book is… The World of Yesterday by Stefan Zweig. My desert island disc would be… Dinu Lipatti playing Mozart’s Piano Sonata K310 from the recording he made at the 1956 Besancon Festival. What are your current projects? Spending several months travelling among the Italian islands in order to write a book about them.
