HACKNEY: DEFINING URBAN LIVING

THE HACKNEY ARTS SCENE IS INCREDIBLY RICH AND DIVERSE, FROM THE AFFLUENT GALLERIES OF HOXTON AND SHOREDITCH TO THE INDUSTRIAL STUDIO COMPLEXES OF HACKNEY WICK.

THE SHOCK OF THE NEW SITS SURPRISINGLY COMFORTABLY ALONGSIDE THE APPRECIATION OF MORE TRADITIONAL FORMS OF ARTISTIC EXPRESSION. GET INVOLVED AND ENJOY THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS.

In Hackney Central, with its celebrated Cultural Quarter, the scene is different again. Hackney Central art, is art with a street edge. Raw. Immediate. Original. Hard. It’s real – and it’s everywhere, from the quite brilliant graffiti scene to the work of local studios and artists just starting out with an altogether fresh vision. All over the borough there are festivals celebrating everything from the work of local film-makers and performance artists to original music, contemporary dance and world culture. Hackney is where contemporary art comes alive and finds a new and vital expression.

Once one of London’s best loved Victorian music halls, the Hackney Empire on Mare Street still knows how to put on a show. A local gem, it features top music acts as well as comedy, dance and opera and has just enjoyed a sumptuous £15 million renovation. Also on Mare Street, the Hackney Picturehouse shows all the latest blockbuster films as well as featuring seasons spotlighting more unusual and independent works. There are regular live simulcasts from the world’s top venues, bringing the finest in classical music, opera, ballet and dance onto the local big screen and numerous special events throughout the year. Lovers of classical music will appreciate The Hackney Proms, formed to introduce more high-quality orchestral music to the cultural life of Hackney.

OUT & ABOUT 14

15

HACKNEY SQUARE

There’s a real excitement about Mare Street. By day, it’s a fascinating shopping destination, combining the essential with the original and sometimes inspirational. There’s a Marks & Spencer and Sainsbury's Local on the street and a 24 hour Tesco superstore just off Mare Street in Morning Lane for your everyday needs, but it’s the new wave of boutiques, décor specialists, galleries, pop ups and quirky accessory shops that really bring the street to life. By day a haven of café culture, by night Mare Street is the perfect place to wine and dine. Try Rita’s for a menu that includes everything from buttermilk-fried chicken to mushroom toban and miso-grilled aubergine. Equally tempting eateries on the street include Hackney Bureau, The Advisory and Bouchon Fourchette. Don’t miss the award-winning Tad Ocakbasi Meze Bar for an authentic taste of Turkey or Café Coco for oriental fusion with a decidedly Vietnamese style. You’ll be spoiled for choice for bars and pubs in Mare Street and surrounding roads. You’ll find everything from traditional East End watering holes to destination gastropubs. The Cock Tavern is renowned for its craft beers and craft pies, while down towards London Fields The Cat & Mutton is a local legend. If you feel like staying out partying into the early hours, try new hot spot Oslo by Hackney Central station. It combines a bar, restaurant and live music space.

LONDON FIELDS

PARK LIFE 8 M I N U T E S A W AY

On a sunny day, London Fields provides the perfect escape from urban strut and street life. A Green Flag award-winning park, here you’ll find over thirty acres of wide open green spaces, tree-lined paths, flower meadows, cycle paths and tennis courts. It’s ridiculously trendy of course and all the better for it. Whether you want to disappear into a good book, throw a frisbee or just hide behind your shades and watch the fashionistas pass by, feel free. Eating al fresco here is almost de rigueur, so be sure to pack a picnic. Alternatively, you can raid the mouth-watering food stalls at Broadway Market, have your own BBQ at The Triangle or pick a park-side café and just cappuccino the afternoon away.

DALSTON

Almost impossibly smooth, Shoreditch with its countless art galleries and installations, upmarket bars and private clubs is a scene unto itself. Join a club here, start to network and you’re sure to meet some very serious players. By day, the shopping is simply fabulous, with quirky boutiques and eccentric independent stores to boggle the imagination!

It’s official: Hoxton is now the trendiest part of the capital as well as the home of Britain’s ‘Silicon Valley’. The bars, clubs, restaurants and galleries of Hoxton are now the destination of choice for tomorrow’s movers and shakers, and even the music venues are well ahead of the curve. Hoxton Square is the epicentre, where art meets science meets business meets tomorrow.

Brick Lane is home to some of the very best curry houses in Britain. If you appreciate the authentic, the imaginative, the diverse – and the award-winning – every visit is a treat. Here you’ll also find a market packed with the very finest Asian fresh produce and spices so that you can try to recreate the magic yourself. Brick Lane is also home to some of London’s best nightclubs – like 93 Feet East and Vibe Bar – but that’s a secret…

An essential part of the Shoreditch scene, BoxPark is the UK’s first pop up mall – and a genuine retail sensation. Filled with a mix of local and global fashion and lifestyle brands, galleries, cafés and restaurants, it’s a truly unique shopping and dining destination.

Spitalfields offers a glorious fusion of grand old London with a new cosmopolitan vision and a strong artistic undercurrent. It’s home to Gilbert & George and Tracey Emin, which should tell you all you need to know about the scene. Spitalfields provides the stage for also some of London’s best markets – including Brick Lane, Old Spitalfields Market and Petticoat Lane – making it an essential shopping destination.

Home of the micro-trend and once described by The Guardian as ‘the coolest place to live in Britain’, Dalston was once a jealously guarded hipster secret – but no more. With the fantastic art décor Rio Cinema, the Vortex Jazz Club ensconced in the new Culture Centre, the radical Arcola Theatre, chic Dalston Roof Park and a hip choice of boutiques and cafés, it’s just too good to keep quiet about.

There are proposals to include Hackney Central as part of the new Crossrail 2 development – or the ‘Chelsea-Hackney’ line as it’s becoming known. Although still on the drawing board at present, it would add an amazing new dimension to Hackney’s already excellent transport connections and provide superb access into the heart of Central London in particular.

LONDON BUS ROUTES The whole of Hackney is extremely well served by London’s bus network. Just three minutes from home, Mare Street is the perfect place to catch a local service. The number 56 offers an ideal City service, while the 242 combines The City with destinations further west including Holborn and Tottenham Court Road. The number 277 provides the best service for Docklands and Canary Wharf. Route 30 is perfect for heading west, stopping at King’s Cross, Euston, Great Portland Street and Baker Street, while the 38 cuts through the heart of Central London through Haymarket, Piccadilly Circus, Green Park and Victoria.
