Welcome to the 2017 – 2018 edition of the Attleborough Town Guide Since the last edition of this ‘must have publication’ which details all that Attleborough has to offer, there have been some significant changes around the town; a huge number of houses have sprung up which is the first phase of the 5000 plus new homes ear-marked for Attleborough. The new Junior School is under construction on London Road and almost opposite RG Carters new premises is nearing completion. Attleborough is an expanding market town with much on offer through the High Street, from the national chains of Sainsbury’s and Lidl to the many independent and sole trader shops which offer a variety of goods and services. Attleborough offers a wide range of clubs and organisations and together with our Carnival, Party on the Park, Attleborough in Bloom and Christmas Lights display we are the envy of many other towns throughout the county. This publication is brought to you via the publishers of Dispatch Magazine, a local business based in the heart of the town centre - We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the businesses who have very kindly supported the production of this updated Town Guide via advertising, all of whom understand the importance of reaching out to the residents they depend upon and value all that Attleborough has to offer – Thank you! The sign was carved by Mr Harry Carter of Swaffham and was erected near the entrance of Queens Square. The sign depicts the heritage of the town being agricultural and cider. At a ceremony at Queens Square on May 31st 1975 the sign was dedicated by Revd Canon I. F. Webb and unveiled by Mr P. C. N. Soloman as president of Trade and Commerce and a deed of gift of the sign was handed to Mrs R. E. D. Francis as Chairman of the Parish Council.

The Town Pump and Acorn is a tree pump sited at Queens Square to celebrate the Diamond Anniversary of Queen Victoria in 1897. The Town Pump was revamped and dedicated by the Revd Michael Aisbett, attended by the Mayor Peter Neal and other town councillors to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 2002.

Attleborough Christmas Carnival Attleborough has over the years, built up a reputation for presenting one of the finest displays of Christmas lights in East Anglia. To mark this, a Christmas Carnival is held on the last Sunday of November each year, to coincide with the switch on of the lights. The format for this event includes: Craft and charity stalls in the Town Hall Church Hall and Sports Centre, a Street Fair in Queens Square, Carol Singing around the tree, Fun Fair rides in the Queens Square car park, a family church service in St Mary’s Church and of course the Father

Christmas procession accompanied by his helpers who arrives in town with his sleigh and presents. The businesses and stalls around the town enter the spirit by decorating their windows and stalls in the theme for the year and of course fancy dress is encouraged on the day. The enthusiasm and support of the local businesses have helped make this event a tremendous success attended by several thousand people, proving that the community spirit is alive and thriving.

Attleborough Christmas Lights Attleborough is now well known to have the best Christmas Lights show for miles around. The organisers try to improve the selection every year. A lot of hard work goes on all year round to get the spectacular results.

Money is always needed to help pay for this updating and replacing, so they rely on donations from local organisations and businesses. With more being raised from the general public and Town Council.

Talks start with the electrical contractors in early June, as there is much work to be done before the lights can be put in place. Hundreds of bulbs have to be replaced and miles of cable overhauled to the very high electricity board standards.

Attleborough In Bloom The Attleborough In Bloom project was started in 2005 with 20 baskets within the town centre, which was doubled to 40 baskets the following year. 2006 also saw the large floral display stand in Queens Square. Following the structural survey of the lamposts at the beginning of 2007 it was decided that we cannot attach the baskets to the posts until they have been replaced with new ones. Every Spring & Summer there is a mass of colour at Queens Square with 25 baskets around the outside whilst the inside is home to the large 3 tier display and a large selection of perennials around the trees. Baskets are also along the

Church wall at St Mary’s with other ground tubs throughout the town and at each of the main entrances. Year on year we improve & extend the Attleborough In Bloom project which has been, and continues to be funded by businesses, organisations, groups, and individuals. You may wish to make a donation to the project, or you may wish to sponsor a tub or floral display for a specific reason, the birth of a child, to celebrate a wedding or wedding anniversary, a milestone or achievement in life or in memory of a loved one. If you wish to contribute to the project please contact the Town Clerk’s office on 01953 456194.

ATTLEBOROUGH ACADEMY NORFOLK

GROWTH OF THE ACADEMY The next few years continue to be an exciting time at Attleborough Academy Norfolk. In March 2015, we were successful in obtaining funding for a new building which will be the first in the published Norfolk County Council’s Master Plan for the growth of AAN. AAN were one of only five schools in the County and also one of only 277 schools nationwide to have been chosen to receive a portion of the ring-fenced £2 billion available from the Government funded ‘Priority School Building Programme’. Phase 1 of the improvement of our facilities will commence in 2018 which in future, is projected to include the new Sports Village and Community/Sixth Form Centre on the current Infant School site as we eventually grow to an Academy of around 1400 students.

Due to the expertise and resources within our Academy chain, the Transforming Education in Norfolk (the TEN Group), we are able to offer travel from a much wider area to the Attleborough Academy Sixth Form Centre including the catchment areas of Old Buckenham High School and Wayland Academy Norfolk. Please visit our website to keep up to date with all the latest developments www.aan.norfolk.sch.uk

Excellent relationships between students and staff are at the heart of the Academy and are often commented on by our visitors. The Academy is a hardworking and caring community of people with high standards, high expectations and strong core values. Our core values use the word CARE as an acronym. They are: • Commitment to continued improvement • Acknowledgement of efforts and achievement • Respect for others and the environment • Excellence in all we do CARE therefore has a genuine meaning within our community as we want the Academy to be a place where these values are seen in all aspects of our work together. Our students are our greatest asset. We have mixed age tutor groups and there are student leaders within each form who take a prominent role in the leadership of the Academy. Our team of Prefects in Year 11 and Sixth Form Presidents provide younger students with effective role models for behaviour and learning. AAN is a converter Academy. In January 2014, we chose to convert to Academy status sponsored by the Transforming Education in Norfolk (the TEN Group). The TEN Group is a federation of educational institutions in Norfolk, all committed to excellence in education. At our core is a passion for making a positive and significant difference to our students’ lives. By www.AttleboroughOnline.co.uk

working together, we are committed to providing greater opportunities for our students, as well as aiming high to achieve success both as a Group and as each individual organisation. We are all passionate about student success and share the same values of: • placing the student at the centre of all that we do • driving up educational standards and outcomes for our students • ensuring that our students are fully prepared for the future and next steps in their chosen careers • ensuring that we develop our students into individuals who are resilient and capable of responding to an uncertain future • developing as learning institutions, sharing our best practice with one another and developing the Group so that it becomes more than just the sum of its parts Attleborough Academy rated as ‘Good’ with ‘exemplary features’ by Ofsted. Rising student achievement and success in putting into practice its ethos of ‘CARE’ (Commitment, Acknowledgement, Respect, Excellence) were among the areas highlighted by Inspectors following Attleborough Academy Norfolk’s Ofsted inspection in September 2016. In its first inspection since becoming an Academy (in March 2014), Attleborough Academy Norfolk was rated as ‘Good’ for its overall effectiveness, with exemplary features. Underpinning Attleborough Academy Norfolk’s improved results at both GCSE and A Level, the inspection report notes that most teaching “is consistently good, including in the Sixth Form, with some that is outstanding.” Please visit www.aan.norfolk.sch.uk and www. tengroup.org.uk for more information. “There is a warm, friendly feel to the place that we hadn’t experienced in any other school we looked at and the teachers and support staff are wonderful. We like the fact that the classes are small, so that each child is individually nurtured to do their very best, even from the very youngest age. Isabella is in Year 2 now and still loves every minute - her progress has been phenomenal,

St. Mary’s Church St Mary’s Church (The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary) has stood at the heart of the market town of Attleborough since medieval times. The church still plays an important role in the life of this thriving community and is growing as the town expands. St Mary’s has an active congregation of all the ages and a wide range of activities. The Church Hall adjoining the church is used daily by many organisations including a day care centre for the elderly. Visit the church to savour the peace and beauty of this ancient place of worship and enjoy its treasures, open all year round.

Sunday Services - 8.00pm, 10.00am and 6.30pm (evensong). The church has Saxon foundations and is built in Norman and Early English styles. The present building is only part of the original construction. The large square Norman Tower, now at the east end was once at the centre of a much larger building which had a fine chancel and choir extending to the east, while the North and South transepts formed the shape of a cross. The whole of this eastern end belonged to the College of the Holy Cross, founded in the late fourteenth century by Sir Robert Mortimer, who enlarged the nave for the Parish. The Tower originally had a spire and, although it is said that the old chancel was demolished after the closure of the Monasteries, it is believed by some that is was destroyed when the spire fell down some 300 years ago.

www.AttleboroughOnline.co.uk

A medieval record suggests that the young St Edmund – King of the East Angles – spent a year at the college studying the Psalter with the priests in Attleborough before his coronation in Suffolk in AD 856.

Other interesting features include the stained glass windows, the stone font with its comical faces, a 16th century chest with three locks and a richly carved pulpit attributed to the workshop of Grindling Gibbons.

Inside the church there are many interesting features, including the amazing Rood Screen for which St Mary’s is famous. It has been described as ‘one of the most precious possessions of our English Churches’. Dated around c1500 the 52 floor long oak screen is the only one in Norfolk to stretch across the nave and both side aisles. It has a richly carved rood loft along the front painted with the shields of the 24 English Bishoprics of the day. The screen was moved to the back of the church in the 1840s, where it remained until 1931, when it was restored to its rightful place.

Near the aisle altar is a marble floorstone commemorating Captain John Gibbs who notoriously drove his carriage and four horses up and down the deepest part of the Devil’s Ditch on Newmarket Heath for a £500 wager in the time of Charles II.

Christ Community Church We’re a growing Church made up of ordinary people from Attleborough and the surrounding towns and villages. We love Jesus and we’ve got a big heart for our community. What we do: Sundays We meet every Sunday morning at 10.30am, Attleborough Community Hub (Independance Matters) on Station Road to hear relevant teaching from the Bible, worship Jesus and build friendships. During our Sunday morning meetings we have a brilliant programme of activities for children and young people. Prayer Triplets We gather in the week in smaller groups for prayer, friendship and Bible reading. Alpha Alpha is an opportunity to explore the meaning of life. It’s a low key, friendly and fun way to learn about the Christian faith over 10 thought provoking sessions. We run courses every year. ‘What Alpha offers, and what is attracting thousands of people, is permission, rare in secular culture, to discuss the big questions - life and death and their meaning’ The Guardian The Lighthouse Charity We started a charity in 2007 to serve the needs of local community. We run three projects: Ignite Ignite is a youth project with a passion to support and meet the needs of local young people. We run a drop in venue and go out and spend time with young people on the streets. We also run specific activities like an IT project bringing young and old together, and a summer drama week.

‘Ignite helps me get through the week’ Young person. Sparklers Sparklers is a parent and toddler group that meets every Friday 10am to 11.30pm at the Lighthouse, runs social events and also provides support and advice to parents. ‘Sparklers was such a warm and friendly group, the leaders seemed genuinely interested in me. 4 years since I first went as a parent, I now help and love it’ – Tabitha, Sparklers Mum Treasures Treasures is a project all about befriending and supporting older people. Attleborough Women’s Institute Mrs Anne Tinker: 01953 453601 The WI was started in Canada in 1897 by Adelaide Hoodless. She realised she urgently needed to learn household skills from more experienced women, when due to ignorance her child died of an illness caused by the use of un-sterilised dairy equipment. The society gradually spread around the world reaching the British Isles in 1915 when the first group started in Wales. Kate Gaymer formed the Attleborough Institute in 1936. Since then the local institute has gone from strength to strength with the modern Attleborough Women’s Institute members organising many activities including arts, craft, singing, keep fit and a walking group. They have annual trips to The End Of The Pier Show at Cromer, The Thursford Christmas Show and Norwich Theatre. Over recent years they have donated money towards various local projects including the Town Hall clock, benches for the Churchyard, the library, Attleborough Junior School and the Attleborough Youth Group. The Women’s Institute has raised money for the Christmas Lights, Attleborough In Bloom, Air Ambulance, First Response and the erection of the old Town sign on the corner of West Carr Road and London Road. The Women’s Institute meeting takes place at 7.30pm on the fourth Wednesday of the month at the Connaught Hall; most months they have a speakers and anyone is welcome to come along and join in or for more information telephone Mrs A Tinker on 01953 453601.

To maintain this organisation is costly and the Fellowship income has to include subscriptions from retired civil service members. The group is for the over 55’s and meets every 3rd Thursday of the month at The Methodist Church Hall on London Road, between 10am and 12 noon. We have various activities and different speakers or entertainment each month.

By appointment Historians, Teachers, Students, Librarians and Genealogists are all able to refer to these documents for their studies. Cllr. Waters enthused, “It is wonderful that an old market town like Attleborough has such a colourful history in its buildings and people which can be traced and will be preserved through the Archive. The Archive is continually expanding and is looking for larger premises.” The Archives are open to the public from 9am - 12noon on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month and also by appointment. Attleborough Writers Group The Attleborough Writers’ Group is an offshoot of the Creative Writing class held for many years within the town of Attleborough, Norfolk, UK. Some members have been affiliated to the Creative Writing class for over ten years. The group meets fortnightly in Attleborough to write, discuss and critique their own work. The main aims of the group are: • To support each member in their endeavour to be creative and to give each member confidence in their own abilities and aspirations. • To encourage other local people to become interested in creative writing and to start their own writing groups. • To raise the profile of creative writing as a viable interest for all sections of the community requiring no credentials or experience.

In December 2009 the writers published their first book entitled ‘Dark Horses’, an anthology of short stories and poems. The event was successfully launched by the Mayor of Attleborough, Mrs. Vera Dale, and received much local support. The group was delighted to be awarded a grant from Breckland Council towards their second anthology, ‘Light and Dark’, which was launched at Christmas 2010. In the summer of 2010 the writers were invited to take part in the Breckland Arts Festival and have subsequently attended many local craft fairs offering helpful advice to anyone wishing to take up creative writing. In November 2012 the Attleborough Writers’ Group launched its fourth anthology of short stories and poems entitled ‘Fourth Write’. The Attleborough Writers’ Group, now an acknowledged part of the town’s society, would like to invite prospective guest speakers to come along and share their experiences. Success As owner and editor it’s a great privilege to be able to produce my series of magazine which include Dispatch, FineCity, Norfolk on My Mind and Suffolk on My Mind. The hours are long, at least 70 hours each week, which means many late nights, early starts and weekends in the office. In addition to my publishing company and being worked into the nooks & grannies of my already busy day, I have also been building an additional business in the little know World of Network Marketing, where I spend just a few hours a week investing in my future. In the traditional World of work the ‘Boss’ may ask you to work the occasional overtime, which nine times out of ten we agree to do, and they pay you the average hourly rate of around £12.00 per hour, whereas in the World of Network Marketing

80 | Attleborough Town Guide 2017-2018

you work that hour now and get paid for it but then the following month you get paid again, and again, and again and again for that one hours work you did months or even years ago. This is called Residual Income and I really like this concept! In addition to the money I receive, which incidentally is very close to £200.00 per hour currently and rising to £300.00 per hour, I have also been presented with the Mini, shown above, because I invested approximately 5 hours a week for the past few years and reached a criteria which I could choose how quickly or slowly I achieved. In the fullness of time time-freedom will click in as the residual income reaches a point where the average UK salary is being earned but you are

still just investing your 5 hours each week. Invest a little more time and do it for a little longer and the sky’s the limit! I’d really welcome the opportunity to show you what I am doing as you may feel you’d like to do it too. It may not be for you, but at least you will have seen what I am doing and you can make that decision, rather than me denying you the opportunity. I just need 10 minutes to show you, plus the time to answer any questions you may have. Get in touch: www.SUCCESSpro.me.uk
