I Want To Tell You About My Mum... There’s always a set of things that mum’s are meant to be: Loving, caring, good at cooking.....My mum is all of these things, and yet so much more. My mum is Author/Illustrator Gilly Wilkinson. It doesn’t get any cooler than that. Even if most people today have iPods and ipads, there will always be room for books, and my mum doesn’t stop at writing them either, she illustrates her own and other peoples books. They are mostly for children and the great thing about her is she always has so much time for children. She doesn’t just write and illustrate amazing literature but fosters children, raises money for the E.A.C.H and passes on her knowledge in the form of creative writing classes for children. It isn’t just children that she helps. She helps animals, friends, family and strangers. She has often thrown open her doors to help where it has been needed and as I have grown up, I find that I like this and it shows what an amazing person she is. Like everyone else, I have my down moments. But mum is always there to put me back on my feet and make me one of the happiest people alive. She
makes life fun and encourages me in whatever I do. More recently she has set up Purrfect Publishing, a consultancy aimed at helping other authors to become published. With a team of illustrators, cartoonists, proof readers and publicists she offers tips on improvement. If you wish to contact her to move your writing forward, either with the next intake of creative writing classes for your youngsters (where a selection of their work will later be published in an anthology) or to request some help with getting your work published/self published, you can contact her at gillypurrfect@talktalk.net To purchase her books or pictures you can contact her at gillywilkinsonbooksandgifts.co.uk Last year she received a letter from Her Majesty The Queen in relation to her new title ‘Speeder and the Socks’ a special Diamond Jubilee story, and

The End Of Legal Aid? The Jackamans Family Team can still help The emotional impact of ending a relationship is heightened by concerns about settling children and finance arrangements, which will be fundamental to shaping a family’s future for good or ill. We hope that this article will offer reassurance about your options for funding representation. Legal Aid - Jackamans still has a legal aid franchise. We will offer legal
aid in the limited circumstances still available. Costs Orders - A spouse applying for divorce may obtain a costs order or agreed contribution from their spouse. Costs orders in children or finance applications are only made where another party has behaved unreasonably and so cannot be relied on as a source of funding. Orders For Payment In Respect Of Legal Services - One spouse may have little or no disposable income or capital yet their spouse is well off – and has employed a solicitor. We can attempt to agree financial support (or apply to the court) to fund reasonable legal costs before they are incurred for divorce, finances and children issues from their income or savings. This provision may be offset against assets recovered (like the legal aid statutory charge). Loan/Insurance Packages For Divorce And Associated Costs - There is usually an arrangement fee. The lender
will require a reasonable prospect that you will recover enough to discharge your liability to them when the matter finishes – when interest is also payable. Limiting Our Involvement - We are able to offer as much or as little legal advice as you want. We will only charge you for what we do and can offer fixed fees for specific tasks. VAT and disbursements will be charged in addition.
Beverly Dixon has now returned to Jackamans following maternity leave. Beverly is a general litigator advising in the areas of contract disputes, landlord and tenant matters, licensing law, consumer law, boundary disputes and debt recovery. An initial free interview, limited to 30 minutes, is available for clients to discuss the facts and merits of their cases.
At Jackamans we provide a free initial meeting to advise you on your options for funding the level of representation that you require. For further information please contact Anita Sharpe on 01379 643555 or email - anita.sharpe@jackamans.co.uk This article provides only a general summary and is not intended to be comprehensive. Diss Museum Diss Museum’s new season, from 12th March, will feature the World War One centenary, airships and the Burston Strike centenary. Local man Martin Mayhew has loaned his extensive collection of Great War material, including helmets, uniforms, weapons, tools, pictures, maps and other items. Some of these were borrowed by Diss High School’s Art department for the pupils to draw, with the items returned in good time for the re-opening.
museum is presenting an afternoon of activity to commemorate putting the missing names on the war memorial.
Another loan item, from the Tate, is the maquette, or model, of a controversial sculpture by Lynn Chadwick.
The Norwich Early Dance Group will perform in the Market Place, on the theme of the vanished England swept away by the war, using dances named in Thomas Hardy’s novels.
He was commissioned in the 1950s to commemorate the R34; but his work proved too innovative and was rejected. Lord Brabazon said that it looked like “a diseased haddock”.
Another unique item is a ladder from the R34 airship, loaned by a local antiques dealer, and visible on one of the old photographs. Spencer Keeley, from Scole, was Wireless Operator on famous airships like the R33, R100 and R101, losing his life when the R101 crashed into a French hill.
The museum’s bendy male mannequin has already featured as Thomas Paine, Dr. Crippen, Thomas Manning and an American airman. He has now become a British soldier sitting in a slit trench.
The exhibition is packed with information, illustrations and photographs, some provided by the Cradle of Aviation Museum on Long Island, where the R34 landed in 1919.
There will be pictures of Diss soldiers and those who came to the town during the war, as well as medals and other memorabilia.
Diss Museum is also setting up a project whereby film makers will go into schools and help pupils make films about the airship age.
Victoria Cross heroes Ernest Seaman from Scole and Gordon Flowerdew from Billingford are featured. Flowerdew took part in the cavalry charge featured in the film War Horse and lost his life.
2014 is the centenary of the longest strike in history, when the Burston schoolchildren came out in sympathy with their dismissed teachers, Tom and Kitty Higden. They had fallen foul of the local establishment because of their innovative ideas.
One of the many other poignant stories features Diss Secondary (later Grammar) School Headmaster Ernest Thompson. He joined the Royal Garrison Artillery near the end of the war and was killed a month before the Armistice. The museum has a picture of soldiers with a field gun in Diss Market Place for Guns Week in 1918. Was it this that prompted Mr. Thompson to give up his safe teaching post and go off to his death? On Sunday 1st June the

It is hoped that there will be a flypast and a celebrity reading of the wartime story The Bowmen by Arthur Machen. During the previous week there is a High School art exhibition in the church, a period tea dance and a World War One poetry evening in Diss Library. A large model of the R34 airship will be one of many striking items in the airship exhibition. On loan from the Fleet Air Arm Museum, the model once hung at London Airport and then at Brooklands.
Local sculptor David Whatley has also provided an item, inspired by the skeletal remains of crashed Zeppelins and the Icarus legend of the man who flew too near the sun on wax wings. There were local Zeppelin raids aiming for Pulham airship station; and bombs were dropped on Billingford.
Local textile groups have created display work to commemorate the strike. The Spinners, Weavers & Dyers and the Embroidery Group have contributed wonderful work for several previous museum projects.
Modeller Graham Elliott, who re-created part of the Frenze-Scole railway for a previous display, has done the same with Pulham airship station, showing the railway that used to be on the site.
The museum will be open, until the end of October, on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, all day Friday and Saturday, plus Sunday afternoons from May to the end of August. Admission is free.

Kerry Butcher Accountancy Services With the beginning of March we all think about spring. At least we hope we can think about Spring if the weather lets us... We are fed up with the miserable cold dark weather that we have had and with the days becoming longer and lighter we are hoping that Spring is on its way after all. I don’t know about you but I usually think of spring as a time for new beginnings – whether that is new lambs and baby chicks, new leaves on the trees or in my case new spring clothes for my wardrobe (well a girl can dream!) Whatever it is – spring is a good time to start any new ideas and ventures. So you have a new idea and you decide that maybe now is the time to put your idea into practice. You really hope that it will take off and who knows you may even end up making a go of it. It could earn you some money eventually but think of all those costs that you are paying out at the moment, surely you don’t need to register as self employed, do you? Are you keeping track of what you have paid out so far?
Have you kept the invoices? Can you claim them back? What else can you claim? Do you need to tell the tax office?
your mind at rest – tell you what you do need to be doing, what you need to keep and importantly – what is eligible to be claimed against tax.
There are so many questions when you start a new venture – it may not be a massive business that changes your life to start with – but you may still need to register as self employed with HMRC. So how do you do that? What does that mean and most importantly what is this going to cost?
If your new venture was a rental property then you could be at the stage where you need to complete your rental statement for the year. Did you know that rental properties are taxed under a different schedule to self employed businesses?
Here at KBA we can answer all of these questions and more – and in answer to the “how much will it cost” question – the answer is initially Absolutely Nothing! If you have questions that need answering or you are unsure of any aspect of your new venture or idea–why not book a free consultation with us? Here at KBA we offer a free initial consultation to any new client which can last up to an hour – just call us or email and we can arrange an appointment there and then. Hopefully we can put
One of the differences is that all rental income has to be prepared to 5 April each year. So if you have a rental property then your year end is almost upon you. Have you told the tax office about your property? Do you know what you can claim for? What are the rules regarding wear and tear allowance?
We can also help you to decide whether it is better to claim those big expenses now or whether it would be better to save for any capital gains tax when you come to sell the property. These are just a couple of the topics that we cover and there is lots more that we can help with. We don’t just to tax returns! We can help with VAT, our payroll service is great (even if we do say so ourselves!) and we offer so much more plus our prices are very reasonable. So why not give us a call 01953 457173 or email kerry@kerrybutcher.co.uk and see how we can help you. It doesn’t cost anything to ask and we hope that you will be glad you did.
To find out the answers to all these questions and more – why not come and talk to us – we are friendly, helpful and approachable and most of all we are on your side and want you to get the most out of your venture.

Diss DFAS A member of the National Association of Decorative & Fine Arts Societies [NADFAS] The first lecture of 2014 was given to 120 members in Royden Village Hall by Phillippa Barton on the history of London Squares & Townhouses in the 17th & 18th century. This apparently esoteric topic was quickly developed into a truly fascinating story of wealth, fashion and property development by Ms Barton’s encylopaedic knowledge of the area, history and archtecture involved. From the acquisitions of the monastic lands beyond the western walls of London in the 1500’s, Phillippa showed the building developments of the great land owners and their forethought in creating speculative estates for long term wealth as London spread out along the north bank of the Thames to gradually become the “West End”. With this building of grand houses and new streets of desirable houses, the London square was born. The First as such being the Earl of Southampton’s Bloomsbury Square in 1660. These developments, including Burlington House, Spencer House and Home House
also included the large terraces around the squares and along the new – but now famous – streets. Hardly pausing for breath, Phillippa took her audience on through the growth of west London and the numerous but fashionably different squares. For this she used contemporary maps and drawings. Taking us from Covent Garden, along the Strand, through Bloomsbury, into St James and Pall Mall. Then along the old Oxford road to Soho, Hanover Square, Bedford Square and the uniform facades of the Harley – Cavendish estate. Her appreciative audience were numbed by the immence academic skill of this very good lecturer but grateful that the journey was cut off at 1800 – before Mayfair, Belgravia and the later developments of the West End retail streets. Much of the fascination was that many recognised the iconic London addresses but now appreciated the history that created this world famous and unique cityscape.

By getting involved you can enjoy an exciting new challenge, meet new people, and do something different with colleagues, friends or family.

Baking and
selling cakes is so simple and so much fun! Rachael Mittell Ormiston’s Community Fundraiser for Suffolk said “Whether you are selling a tray of freshly-baked brownies in the playground, cupcakes in the office, or organising a cake sale in the local village hall, this is a fantastic way to raise money.” Visit ormiston.org/bake to find out how you can get involved! Or how about putting on your own event, it’s a great way to support Ormiston – what you do isn’t limited – get creative! Ormiston will support you every step of the way.
Forget conventional cleansers formulated with harsh chemicals; safe, effective alternatives are easy to make and use. Spring cleaning is supposed to be a ritual of purging the accumulated dirt, germs and odour from a winter-weary home to create a clean and healthy living space. Essential oils have potent antimicrobial effects along with their clean, pleasant natural aromas. One great thing about using essential oils for cleaning is their disinfecting properties. You can destroy a lot of bacteria and moulds and inhibit their return for several weeks. Especially good are: lemon (clean, sweet, uplifting scent; deodorising), peppermint (minty, fresh; air purifier; mild pest
repellent), eucalyptus and tea tree (air and surface sanitisers; fresh, therapeutic aromas). How much to use? It really is your preference on how strong you want it to smell. I usually use about 40 drops of essential oils in 20ml of white vinegar per half bucket of water; the vinegar aids the cleaning and also acts as an emulsifier to disperse the oils in the water. This is a perfect time to use up little bits of essential oils left in half empty bottles. These are great for cleaning but may not be as effective for therapeutic use. Always remember to use caution near painted or finished surfaces. As even though essential oils are diluted they could still damage furniture finishes if left on or allowed to soak into the surface for too long.

12 AN INTERVIEW WITH...
www.DispatchMagazine.co.uk
People from Diss For our March interview Dispatch Owner Jonathan spent an afternoon with the BBC One Formula 1 commentator Ben Edwards, and his wife Belinda, at their idyillic country cottage just outisde Diss. Prior to jetting off across the globe for the 2014 season, Ben gave us an insight into his career in motorsport from mechanic to commentator.
Ben Edwards
Ben, give us a brief introduction to who you are, what you do. I am the BBC’s commentator on Formula 1, and I started out in motor racing first as a mechanic and then racing at circuits like Snetterton and Brands Hatch before becoming a racing instructor and then a commentator.
What brought you to Diss? Birth, Betrothal, Business? In my case, bethrothal. The girl of my dreams happened to live here; what better reason for moving up from Surrey?
In your opinion, what is the single best thing about Diss? Amandines Cafe. Even though I’m not vegetarian, its still the best place for lunch.
What 3 things would you like people to know about you? I don’t talk as much in private as I do on the telly. I won a Golden Rolling Pin in a TV cookery competition when I was working as an instructor at Brands Hatch. I have visited more than 90 motor racing circuits around the globe.
What do you consider to be your greatest career achievement to date? Getting the gig at the BBC.
How did you get involved in motorsport commentary? I started out helping another commentator at Brands Hatch, and I really enjoyed it. I love talking about motor racing which is my passion, so it grew from there. March 2014

AN INTERVIEW WITH... 13
Is being involved with Formula 1 as glamorous as it looks on telly. Not really. Most people working in the sport spend many hours in aeroplanes and hotels and work long hours in between. Some of the locations are glamorous of course, and there’s a chance to spot some celebrities in the paddock but most of the time people are too busy to notice!
Are all the changes to Formula 1 this year going to be a good thing? There will be positives and negatives. The new rules require a more fuel-efficient Formula 1, but there could be problems with reliability in the early part of the season. Hopefully, there will be some different winners this year.
What do you like best about being involved with the Formula 1 circus? The opportunity to see some of the world’s best drivers perform at the highest level of circuit racing, and meeting some of the people behind the scenes that make it all happen.
What is your ultimate career goal?
QUICK FIRE ROUND
To balance work and family life; isn’t that a challenge for all of us whatever we do? Tea or coffee:

And finally. . . Is there a skeleton you want to reveal? There’s the skeleton of one of my mother’s family in the churchyard in Palgrave. I never knew that before I moved to Diss.

Meditation does not have to be part of any religious doctrine because it’s a natural part of the human condition and helps promote health and wellbeing. It can help to reduce blood pressure and enhance the immune system. Meditation soothes the part of the brain that produces stress hormones and can also help improve creativity and reaction speeds. In fact many hospital pain clinics now prescribe meditation to help patients cope better with discomfort arising from a wide range of illnesses – e.g. arthritis, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. In the process, it could help reduce anxiety, stress, depression and insomnia. So if you want to promote health, well-being, increase your flexibility and become more self-aware, then Stretch

New Media, New Markets – A Balanced Approach The Internet has enabled Norfolk companies to broaden their horizons, targeting customers nationally and globally. But is there a danger of them losing out by neglecting traditional markets and media? Local design company KSD Associates has the answer, with a balanced mix of online and offline marketing, as well as strong ties with the local community. The world is getting smaller. With online media providing cost-effective access to a national or global marketplace, small and medium-sized businesses are no longer confined to targeting local customers. However, traditional media and markets still have their place in the marketing mix. In a crowded digital arena, supporting websites and email marketing with printed materials can reinforce the message and deliver much better results. What’s more, staying in touch with your loyal local customer base is essential. “It’s a matter of planning a cohesive strategy that integrates online and offline media to target traditional and new markets,” says Kevin Smith, owner of Norfolk-based graphic design agency KSD Associates. “For many
small and medium-sized businesses, the Web remains something of an enigma, complicated by technospeak and buzzwords. We’re here to demystify the world of online marketing and provide straight-talking advice. We can help businesses take advantage of the opportunities and avoid the pitfalls that can be costly and non-productive.” New technology, Traditional values. Whether it’s websites and social media or brochures and mail shots, KSD applies similar fundamental principles: good design, clear messaging and a strong call to action. “New media are an evolution, not a revolution,” observes Kevin. “It’s not about reinventing the wheel. The way you communicate with customers hasn’t changed dramatically. They still respond to a good offer that inspires them, is clearly presented and makes it easy for them to respond. We’ve adapted our skills to embrace the possibilities of this new digital
world and help companies take full advantage of the opportunities that it creates.” Community spirit. KSD prides itself on having strong links with the local community and understanding its dynamic. “We share our experience and expertise from an informed viewpoint,” asserts Kevin. “It’s not just about having the creative and technical skills to produce eyecatching design solutions. We’re firmly rooted in Norfolk and committed to working with local companies to help them continue building a loyal local customer base while widening their reach to target new markets.” KSD has already begun helping to foster community spirit in its home base of Wymondham through membership of the town’s Business Group. This has led to sponsorship of the publicity for the annual carnival, which this year will include the grand
finale of Wymondham’s Got Talent, an opportunity for local residents to show off their entertaining skills to a live audience and a panel of judges, including professionals and local personalities. “We’re delighted to be able to offer our expertise to benefit the local community,” comments Kevin. “Having events such as the annual carnival not only bring the community together. They also attract visitors to the town and help boost the local economy.” There’s much talk about ‘globalisation’ these days. But the term on everyone’s lips could soon be ‘localisation’. In the Internet Age, marketing power is rapidly being devolved to local business communities. With the help of forward-thinking companies such as KSD, businesses large and small can harness that power and make the most of the opportunities. Tel - 01953 601757

Attleborough Travel Looking forward to some Summer Sun?
Attleborough Heritage Group outlines ambitious plans at AGM Boosted by unanimous support for their re-election at the Annual General Meeting held on 29 January 2014, the officers and committee of Attleborough Heritage Group (AHG) outlined their proposals for a programme of expansion over the next six years with visions of greater on-line access to their extensive archive and greater co-operation and partnership with other County and National organisations. AHG has seen a very successful year in 2013 with two sell-out presentations which have helped to increase the Group’s funds as well as coffee mornings and involvement in the Town Carnival and St Mary’s Summer Fete. Behind the scenes AHG continues to be involved with family history research and to document and care for the very important and precious archive material donated by members and others. Chairman, Cliff Amos, also reported on the frustrations and attempts by the Group over the last two years to secure the tenancy of
the Railway Signal Cabin which Network Rail had suggested would be available for a twenty five year tenancy in 2012. He added “As we monitor the Grade II Listed Railway Station site we are increasingly concerned over the deterioration and state of the buildings. Attleborough Station is an important facility for the expanding town and AHG believes it could be renovated to serve a very useful purpose not just as a transport hub but for many other passenger and tourist facilities, as well as retaining the historic railway architecture. AHG has been talking to English Heritage, local authorities and our local MP to try to progress our ideas for Attleborough Station.”

Remember Your ‘Mum In A Million’ This month, while many celebrate Mother’s Day, there will be a group of people spending this special day without their mum We have commissioned a special book of memories from which people may draw comfort by expressing how they feel or sharing prayers, poems, thoughts and inspirational sayings. Anyone who has been bereaved of their mum can contribute to the book, and children and young people are also encouraged. The pages will be kept for many years and will be a testament to the
understanding and acceptance that comes with the passing of seasons. You do not have to be profound! You may wish to include your thoughts and feelings about your mother’s death as well as any special memories you have of her life. Share how she made you feel and the special things she did for you. Just to say you are remembering someone special is enough. There will be a Mother’s Day book
of memories in Rosedale Funeral Home at Yard House, High Street, Attleborough and Rosedale House, 63 Victoria Road, Diss

We have also purchased a limited number of beautiful “Mum in a Million rose bushes from Peter Beales Roses for families to take away and plant in memory of their mum. If you would like to receive a rose, please contact us on 01953 452538 or 01379 640810 to reserve one as numbers are limited.
Rosedale is pleased to be supporting a special service of Remembrance on Mothering Sunday at GreenAcres Woodland Burials – Colney, near Norwich. The service will begin at 11am and will be held in the Woodland Hall.
The roses and the book of memories will be available in the week prior to Mother’s Day for those wishing to contribute. Our Funeral Homes are open 9am-5pm every week day.
Izzy Ryder, a civil celebrant will deliver the service and it is free to attend and open to all. Advance booking is advisable on 01603 811 556 or www. greenacreswoodlandburials.co.uk/colney.
And in the days surrounding Mother’s Day, remember it’s OK to grieve for your mum in your own way. Window Geeks “Replacing your steamed-up windows doesn’t mean you have to replace the whole window…Save thousands by changing only the glass”… It can be stressful when things break or go wrong, especially when it seems the only solution comes at great expense. Unexpected bills can hit households very hard at a time when every penny counts and it means that thousands of homeowners put off fixing their windows or doors for fear of the high costs usually associated with these types of products... Well now you can relax…because WindowGeeks, a national window, door and conservatory repair specialist, has expanded into Norwich and will service the whole of the Norfolk region, giving local home owners access to real money-saving options; one that can reduce what could be an alarming bill in the thousands to a far more acceptable one in the low hundreds - and in most cases even lower than that. The fact is that the average single repair or replacement undertaken by WindowGeeks, which includes locks, handles and hinges, as well as the usual replacement of steamed-up double glazed units is less
than £60...not surprising really when you consider that the replacement of a single steamed-up double glazed window starts from as low as £30 including VAT and fitting…which is why, at this point, many people take the opportunity to upgrade to energy efficient double glazed units. Our new local and experienced team, headed up by Steve Olley, join all of our other skilled craftsmen and women throughout the UK, each providing a professional and cost effective service to 1,000s of customers from Plymouth in the Southwest, through Norwich in the East, up to Preston in the North and all points in-between… “Lots of people have problems with their windows,” says Steve, “They get steamed-up and won’t clear, or the locks stick or the handles get loose…and it becomes even more of a problem at this time of year when cold draughts get through...but what’s really surprising is that most people don’t realise that all of these problems can be fixed quickly and without spending a fortune or having to
sell one or more of their children, unless they want to of course”… WindowGeeks has over 38 years’ experience in the glazing industry and it’s sad to think that there are still quite a few traditional window companies that either refuse or just don’t want to carryout repairs…now were not saying that all double glazing companies don’t carry out repairs, many do, and do a great job, but Steve adds, “In most cases they’re not really interested in the smaller jobs and that’s what’s so great about WindowGeeks, we offer a real cost-effective solution, which makes it a very easy decision for our customers to choose us...there’s no pressure sales from us because there’s no viable alternative, unless, that is, you want to spend 10, 20 or even 100 times more on replacing all your double glazing!” While the cost savings might be the biggest draw, there’s another reason customers should choose WindowGeeks and one that has inevitably convinced many customers throughout the UK to use us;
“It’s all about honesty and trust,” says Steve. “There’s integrity in what WindowGeeks do and that’s very important to me, we tell the truth, only charge for what needs doing and we always honour our promises…We run a very successful and ethical business based on good old fashioned customer service backed up with top quality products and support from our head office.” WindowGeeks provides free quotations with; • No call out charges • No credit card charges • No deposits • No minimum order values • No high pressure sales men or women • No hidden extras • 10 year guarantee on all glazed products All our quotes include VAT and Fitting Call now for a FREE QUOTE on 0800 61 22 943 or visit us at www.windowgeeks.co.uk

Sound Sleep Beds Buying a new bed this month, look for the big tick logo. It’s March again and that means one thing, it’s National Bed Month! This National Bed Month, for the first time ever, consumers can now buy a new bed with the reassurance that it is ‘officially’ safe, clean and honest. The National Bed Federation’s ‘NBF Approved’ large tick logo means the manufacturer who made that bed has been independently audited to make sure they follow all the required procedures to produce safe, clean and hygienic mattresses. In short, that they are what they say they are. The move follows increasing mistrust among consumers about the products they are buying – particularly those where the contents are unseen and taken on trust, like beds and mattresses. The NBF is the UK trade association for British bed manufacturers. And to meet its new Code of Practice, member companies have had to go through rigorous and independent audits. “We wanted to ensure that our mark of approval really meant something,” said Jessica Alexander, executive director of the NBF.
Particularly important to anyone buying a new bed is its safety and the reassurance that the mattress meets strict British flammability regulations. If it doesn’t - and recent publicity on BBC’s ‘Fake Britain’ programme which aired in January 2014 has highlighted the growing number of illegal mattresses being sold with counterfeit fire labels – then it could prove fatal if ignited. Silentnight Beds have released a video of flammability tests on mattresses undertaken in their laboratory, the results are shocking. A non-compliant mattress, which was purchased online, therefore on sale to the public, was on fire within two minutes and releasing significant amounts of toxic fumes within three minutes, by this time the fully compliant mattress had fully extinguished itself. Within six minutes, the room is fully consumed with smoke and fire, the average response time for fire fighters in the UK is nine minutes. See it for yourself on our TV in store or on our YouTube page, search for Sound Sleep Beds. Less dramatic but still concerning are health and hygiene issues. We all want to think the nice new bed we are getting
in to is clean and hygienic – and the NBF Approved logo means consumers can be sure that the bed they are buying comes from a manufacturer with all the right procedures in place to be sure it is just that.
– and with a mattress it’s hard to know what you are buying. The new NBF Approved logo means people can buy a mattress in the certain knowledge that it is safe, clean and honest.”
And lastly, we want to know that the mattress we are buying contains exactly what it says it does. Not to do so contravenes the Trades Descriptions Act – and again, the big tick logo means you can be assured the product you are buying is as described.
Sound Sleep backs the National Bed Federation’s new code of practice and are committed to supplying clean and safe products, so you can have a sound sleep knowing that your bed is fully compliant to UK laws and regulations. Feel free to visit us in store for more information.
It’s an initiative that The Sleep Council both supports and endorses. Said spokesperson Lisa Artis: “This is great news for consumers and we would urge anyone buying a bed to look out for the NBF’s new mark of approval – it’s designed to keep people sleeping safe as well as sound.” Said Jessica Alexander: “For reputable manufacturers, the NBF Approved logo is merely confirmation that they are – and always have been - following all the right procedures. Unfortunately there are less scrupulous traders out there who are now selling products that can’t be trusted

22 NEW BUCKenham art exhibition
New Buckenham Art Exhibition I think it would be fair to say that the New Buckenham Exhibition, over the twenty years, has built up quite a reputation for being a quality show It has always been held over the Easter Weekend and this year is no exception. The Opening Night is Friday 18th April starting at 7.30 p.m. and finishing at 10 p.m. admission is £3.00 and this includes your glass of wine and nibbles.
It is always a special night where lots of people gather as soon as the doors are open to find their very special picture. Many are sold on this evening and often to people who have bought a picture at the exhibition before. However if you prefer a more calm leisurely viewing then the Saturday, Sunday, or Monday are the days to go and enjoy this cultural event. The exhibition is open each from 11.a.m to 4.30 p.m. admission is £1.00 and the exhibition closes on the Monday 21st April. The content of the exhibition varies from year to year as new artists exhibit each year. However there are some that have been exhibiting with us since it opened twenty years ago. The quality is always good and it seems to get better each year. Yvonne Lamden-Cooper who will be exhibiting her work displays two of her pictures. She has a real passion for wild life and captures moments with real artistry. Her colourful career shows how dedicated you must be to produce such quality art work.
New Buckenham Players Presents Rough Justice James Highwood, a television commentator, is on stand at the Old Bailey for the murder of his severely disabled child. He refuses to obtain legal representation, despite his solicitors plea, and carries out his own defence. James claims that the jury alone are responsible for the verdict, this brings him into conflict with the Judge. While the battle to have his intentions understood brings him into conflict with the prosecutor, Margaret Casely, a well known catholic and pro lifer. Then there’s the question of whether Highwood killed his child after all...
March 2014
This courtroom drama was performed at the Theatre Royal in 2013 and starred Tom Conti. Performances are at New Buckenham Village Hall on the Thursday 20th, Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd of March. The bar opens at 7pm and the performances start at 8pm. Tickets are £7.50 or £6.50 for concessions.

Make The Most Of Your Retirement We are all living longer and planning to do more with our free time... ..But a changing economic climate and pension provisions mean many people don’t often have the money to realise their retirement dreams. Equity release is beginning to play an important role for home owners aged over 55 and in my experience the most important factors for people seeking advice is to demonstrate and be able to guarantee the following: • There must be a ‘no negative equity guarantee’ to safeguard your beneficiaries • You have the right to sell your home at any time to down-size or move into other accommodation, the amount owed is then repaid with any balance transferred to your bank account • No monthly payments are made, as interest is rolled up on a lifetime mortgage. If a Home Reversion plan is more suitable you would sell a proportion of your property and remain in your home for life with no roll up of interest on the percentage of the value retained.
• You are able to remain in your own home for as long as you wish • Money borrowed will be at a fixed rate of interest for life, is tax-free, and can be used for any purpose There are many reasons why people raise money using Equity Release: to repay an existing mortgage, home improvements, buy a motor home, travel abroad, help their children with house purchase or to enhance their own lifestyle. Before making any decisions you are advised to seek independent professional advice from a person qualified and approved by the FCA. This can be checked on the FCA Register: www.fca.org.uk/register or telephone 0800 111 6768.
you to discuss and reflect on the advice given. In my opinion you should not make any decision at the first meeting. This should be to establish whether the person giving you the advice is acceptable to you or not before asking him or her to obtain further information specific to your own needs. It is an FCA requirement that Keyfacts are given to you and thoroughly explained, this may be from two or three providers to assess the most suitable before making your decision to apply for either a lump
sum of money, income or to secure a facility that will allow you to draw down sums as and when required. There are many options available to you hence the reason why it is necessary to be fully informed. Before deciding whether Equity Release is suitable for you, your questions should be answered to your total satisfaction, be prepared to take time over this, never be rushed into something if you are in any doubt. Norfolk Wildlife Trust March species of the month - Rabbit. Visit the Brecks in spring and you’re sure to see one of the UK’s most well-loved creatures, the rabbit – an animal familiar from the books of Beatrix Potter and Richard Adams’ Watership Down. The best thing is that, unlike most other mammal species, your sighting won’t be restricted to a brief blur fleeing away through the trees, but virtuallyguaranteed views of hundreds of cute creatures contentedly feeding in front of you. Although rabbits seem an integral part of the British countryside, they aren’t actually native to the UK. It’s thought their presence dates back to the Romans (who kept them here in small numbers), though there is also some evidence that pre-ice age populations may have existed. However, rabbits really began to flourish after the arrival of the Normans, when warrening – the management of rabbit enclosures – became a highly-profitable profession, with rabbits farmed for their manure, meat and fur.
From the 12th century Breckland was a stronghold for the rabbit industry and had one of the country’s largest concentrations of warrens – the dry, sandy ground, relatively sunny climate and sparse rainfall were ideal, mimicking the favoured conditions of the rabbit’s native Mediterranean. Rabbits also began to escape from their penned areas and establish feral populations, though warrens continued to be an important part of the local landscape over the following centuries. Indeed, during the late Victorian period the entire bowler hat industry in London depended on rabbit felt, with three felting factories in Brandon employing 500 people.
resulted from the arrival of myxomatosis in the 1950s, which almost eradicated the species.
So, why not hop over to the Brecks this spring to enjoy the area’s unique wildlife – and the rabbit-rich landscape!
Today, rabbit numbers are recovering and at Norfolk Wildlife Trust reserves such as East Wretham and Weeting Heaths the animals are actively encouraged for their vital grass-nibbling, which keeps the heathland at the perfect height for maximum biodiversity. Indeed, a 2011 study led by scientists from UEA showed that 12,500 species of plants and animals are found in the Brecks, including 28% of the UK’s rare species – all in an area covering less than 1% of the country’s land area.
NWT East Wretham Heath is located 5km north of Thetford on the A1075. It is open all year and entrance is free. NWT Weeting Heath is just west of Weeting village (near Brandon) on the minor road towards Hockwold cum Wilton. It is open from April to September, with a small entrance charge for non-NWT members. www.norfolkwildlifetrust.org.uk Ed Parnell, Norfolk Wildlife Trust
During the twentieth century, demand for rabbit products diminished and, with the conversion of much of the Brecks to forestry plantations after WWI, rabbits became regarded as a pest. The Forestry Commission employed up to 30 men locally to control them, though a more devastating reduction of their population
Gardening Tips For March When the weather permits it’s a great to get out in the garden and do some maintainance... If you have not already pruned your roses there is still time to get the secateurs out. Make sure that they are clean and sharp as, if blunt, they will not produce a clean cut and this could cause disease. Remember to try to prune into a shape of a wine goblet keeping the centre of the plant open so lots of air can circulate through the plant. All modern bush roses which include Hybrid Teas and Floribundas should be pruned hard as this will stop the plants becoming leggy.
area as long as it is kept well watered until it becomes established, as, if the tree is still alive it will take all the moisture away from the rose. When planting into a tree it is a good idea to sink a piece of pipe into the planting hole before planting, so that when you water it goes down the pipe and evenly into the soil. By doing this you know the water is getting where it is needed - at the roots.
Now that colour is returning to the garden and to the countryside in general, an air of enthusiasm creeps upon us. The birds are busy doing their bit to increase numbers and, on warm sunny days, a gentle buzz may be heard from a lone bumble bee. It serves to remind us about the importance of wildlife in our gardens and strikes a thought or two on how to encourage it.
Using plants that produce flowers over a long season, that are generally towards a single form, are in bright colours and have a scent, all helps to attract important insects especially when they are needed for pollination. Bushy plants with a dense canopy and maybe some thorns, attract nesting or roosting birds. Some flowers are quite insignificant but are vital nectar ‘cafés’ such as ivy. The theme then is to try and grow as wide a variety of plants as possible, large or small.
Now is the perfect time to be applying a general rose fertiliser which has a high potash content to your roses, shrubs and perennials that will help produce better flowers. A small handful scattered around the base of each plant and then gently hoed into the soil will benefit your plants with new lush growth and an abundance of flowers later in the year. Applied again in early July will help with the second flush of flowers.
This is the time for various gardens to be opened sometimes for special events such as Daffodil Day. Try to get out to see these wonderful places not just for something to do but also to enjoy what an interest in gardening is all about and why we should do even a little every now and then. Don’t forget Mother’s Day later this month - plants of all descriptions make ideal presents: Roses, Azaleas, Camellias to name just a few.

So what is the alternative? In a letter to regulators, Ed Davey said profit margins made by the “big six” energy firms when supplying gas were higher than previously thought. He called on regulators to study the dominance of British Gas, which said it would participate in any discussions. The company’s owner, Centrica, saw its shares fall by 3% in early trading. Mr Davey wants a market investigation, pointing out that British Gas had charged among the highest

Utility Warehouse is singled out for offering a “very attractive package” thanks to our Gold Bundles. Sarnies at Heart of British Diet Despite all the negatives of the recession, it seems that ready-to-eat sandwiches are now such a big part of our lives that we no longer see them as a luxury. New figures show that we chomped our way through 126 million more pre-packed sandwiches last year than in 2008, bringing the total consumed to a whopping three billion sarnies across the UK. And although another three billion lunch boxes were taken to work, more people bought ready-made sarnies from supermarkets to take home - an increase of eight per cent - to put into lunch boxes the next day.
Sandwiches are also highly fashion-led with constant changes in the 20 most popular fillings, although chicken salad remains at number one. In fact, chicken is the most popular filling, accounting for about 30% of all ready-made sandwiches, or 68,000 tonnes of the stuff The statistics from the British Sandwich Association show that the humble sandwich has come a long way from its origins as a snack for field labourers in the middle ages.
Ginger Cake
However, it did not get its name until 1762 when the 4th Earl of Sandwich called for some cuts of beef to be placed between toasted slices of bread so that he could continue gambling while he ate. In total British consumers managed to munch their way through over 11.5 billion sandwiches last year - with more than half of them made and eaten at home. The world’s largest pre-packed sandwich is believed to be one created by Roberts Bakery in Norwich that was 2.5 metres long, packed with Marmite, tuna and mayonnaise and weighing the same as 1,000 loaves.
Jim Winship, Director of the British Sandwich Association, says: “It seems that while some consumers reacted to all the negative publicity by making more sandwiches at home, this was short-lived. The evidence suggests that people get bored with the limited choice of ingredients they have in the home for making up lunch boxes - the choice of fillings in sandwich outlets is generally much greater “We suspect people also value that extra 10 minutes in bed each morning if they don’t have to make up a lunch box!
Quick and simple recipe for a timeless classic INGREDIENTS • 250 g self-raising flour • 2 tsp ground ginger • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda • pinchfine salt • 200 g golden syrup • 2 tbsp syrup from the jar of stem ginger • 125 g butter • 3 lumps preserved stem ginger, about 55g • 2 tbsp sultanas, heaped • 125 g dark muscovado sugar • 2 large eggs • 240 ml milk METHOD 1. You will need a square cake tin measuring approximately 20-22cm, lined on the bottom with baking parchment or greaseproof paper. 2. Preheat the oven to 180C/gas 4. Sift the flour with the ground ginger, cinnamon, bicarbonate of soda and salt.
3. Put the golden and ginger syrups and the butter into a small saucepan and warm over a low heat. Dice the stem ginger finely, then add it to the pan with the sultanas and sugar. Let the mixture bubble gently for a minute, giving it the occasional stir to stop the fruit sticking on the bottom. 4. Break the eggs into a bowl, pour in the milk and beat gently to break up the egg and mix it into the milk.
Britain’s biggest sandwich retailer is now the American franchise chain Subway which shot ahead of Tesco, Greggs and Marks & Spencer to take the lead in 2006. Nearly 20% of all sandwiches are purchased in London with the Midlands just behind at 17% followed by Yorkshire on 12% and 11% in Lancashire while people in the North East and South West buy the fewest.
XQGHU QHZ RZQHUVKLS
5. Remove the butter and sugar mixture from the heat and pour into the flour, stirring smoothly and firmly with a large metal spoon. Mix in the milk and eggs. The mixture should be sloppy, with no trace of flour. 6. Scoop the mixture into the lined cake tin and bake for 35-40 minutes, until a skewer inserted in the centre of the cake comes out clean. Unless you are serving it warm, leave the cake in its tin to cool, then tip it out on to a sheet of greaseproof paper. Wrap it up in foil and, if you can, leave it to mature for a day or two before eating.

30 CLUBS & SCHOOLS
The New Eccles Hall School Set in 33 acres of beautiful Norfolk countryside, The New Eccles Hall School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school for children of mixed ability, aged five to eighteen. The school operates as a mainstream school although its classes are small and total school numbers do not exceed 150, allowing individual needs to be addressed. The school works hard at building children’s confidence and ability in all areas and offers many extra-curricula opportunities, on the sports field, through the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and overseas trips.
“Our son and our household have been transformed because he has been so well catered for and we know that he has succeeded because of his own hard work and the efforts of New Eccles Hall School.” - Mr. and Mrs W. (Parents), 2012 Many children who attend the school hold Statements of Special Educational Needs. The school provides a broad curriculum in which all children are
able to fulfil their potential and, where possible, achieve excellence; our Individual Teaching Unit is central to tailoring each child’s curriculum. Approximately one third of children board at the school, most are weekly boarders. The small Sixth Form is housed in a separate building and has its own facilities.
“I remember at interview, the
Headmaster telling us that Eccles would have to start J’s education from scratch. Since that time with the devotion of the ITU (College of Knowledge Staff) and other teachers he can read and write; he has just started reading Terry Pratchett books and read a passage out loud to me the other day.”

Active Kids Scheme
CLUBS & SCHOOLS 31
10th year of Sainsbury’s Active Kids scheme begins as schools, groups and clubs in Attleborough start collecting • Active Kids Ambassador David Beckham encourages Sainsbury’s Attleborough customers to start collecting • There are 111 schools and clubs now registered in the Attleborough area. • Scheme drives schools to get ahead of new national curriculum changes • Over £136 million worth of equipment and experiences donated nationally since 2005 The 10th year of Sainsbury’s Active Kids scheme has launched at Attleborough. Customers can now collect vouchers in-store and help registered schools, groups and clubs across the Attleborough area receive equipment and experiences. The scheme has launched seven months ahead of key changes to the national curriculum on cooking and healthy eating, where all pupils between the ages of seven and 14 are to be taught cookery from September.
To support these key changes, over 100 new cookery and nutrition toolkits have been added to the range of sports and cooking equipment on offer as part of the voucher exchange for schools, Scouts and Guide groups and clubs. Meanwhile, teacher resource toolkits, developed in collaboration with the British Nutritional Foundation and the Department of Education, will equip school children with the materials, ingredients and knowledge to learn the skills to lead healthier lives. Sainsbury’s Attleborough customers have until 20th May to collect vouchers and Active Kids Ambassador David Beckham said: “Helping kids in Attleborough to understand why being active and eating healthily is really important, which is why I am proud to announce that Sainsbury’s Active Kids collection is now open. 111 Schools are now registered to the Active Kids scheme, including Attleborough Infant school who joined in 2005. Thanks to Sainsbury’s customers, the school has collected 43659
since they registered. Last year they purchased equipment including some PE equipment, Tai Kwando and Street Dance sessions. Miss Lucy Wayman, Head Teacher at Attleborough Infant School said “Joining Active Kids has greatly enhanced our ability to teach our children about the benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle. We’re delighted by the support from Sainsbury’s and it’s helped provide the children with fantastic equipment and experiences which will last for several years to come. We’re hoping to collect even more vouchers in this landmark 10th year of the scheme.” To celebrate the 10th year of Active Kids, registered schools, groups and clubs across the Attleborough area can create their order wishlist online by Friday 28 February, to be one of 32 organisations across the UK in with a chance of winning their wishlist. Meanwhile, customers can also nominate an organisation online to win their wishlist too.
Also, organisations that register their 2014 order online by Wednesday 16th July and have sent their vouchers and order form by Wednesday 18th July will be entered into a prize draw, where one organisation will win their order and have it delivered by Active Kids Ambassador Ellie Simmonds. Sainsbury’s Store Manager Jason Symonds added: “Throughout the last 10 years, our customers have played a key part in helping young children understand cooking and healthy eating from a young age With lots of great incentives this year and a greater focus on healthy eating and nutrition, we hope all of our registered schools, groups and clubs across Attleborough have fun collecting over the next few months”.

Age UK Challenges Government On Care Age UK has issued its ‘Five challenges to Government on care’ the key factors that the Charity believes will determine whether the current social care reforms succeed or fail. As the debate over the future of social care continues to intensify, a new survey by Age UK estimates that 13.7 million people aged 50 or over in Great Britain (63% of those interviewed) think the Government treat older people badly. When asked what makes them think that way an overwhelming three quarters (74%) cited poor standards of social care. The survey by Ipsos Mori(i) also showed that 7 out of 10 (70%) people aged 50-64 do not feel confident that older people receiving care services are treated with dignity and respect. These results come at a time when spending on social care continues to drop and many older people who need care are finding it increasingly difficult to access the system and get the help they need. On the eve of the Autumn Statement, Age UK is issuing its ‘Five challenges to Government on care.’
March 2014
These challenges lay out the key factors that the Charity believes will be pivotal to determining whether the current social care reforms succeed or fail. Caroline Abrahams, Charity Director at Age UK, says: “Our survey shows that three quarters of 50-65s think the social care on offer is nowhere near good enough for their loved ones today, or for themselves tomorrow if they should need it as they grow older. Two thirds of them think the Government treats older people badly as a result, highlighting how strongly they feel about our creaking social care system. The core of the problem is that funding for social care has failed and is still failing to keep up with ever increasing demand, putting the whole system on the verge of collapse. The Government deserves credit for bringing forward long overdue reforms to the social care system that could
make a real difference if properly implemented, but we are worried that the social care ‘coat’ being designed for 2016 is being cut to the inadequate ‘cloth’ that the Treasury is allocating. A great new system on paper is pointless unless there is sufficient funding in place. Hospitals are full to bursting already and winter is still to set in, so there will never be a better time for the Government to commit to meeting the true cost of a decent social care system than in the Autumn Statement.” In 2011 Age UK laid out how the social care system could best benefit older people in its report ‘Care in Crisis’. The ‘Five challenges to Government on care’ picks out those areas which will be critical to the success of the proposed reforms – it reflects on what the Charity asked in 2011 and the situation to date, and sets out the key
challenges that need to be addressed to make the system work in 2016. Age UK makes the following challenges to the Government in the document: 1. The new national eligibility threshold must be set at moderate or its equivalent 2. There must be enough investment into the social care system so it is fully funded and able to deliver care and support to older people who need it 3. Changes must be communicated to older people and their families so they understand ‘the deal’ on offer 4. The rates for care that go towards the cap or are paid by local authorities must be fair and reflect the true cost of providing decent quality care 5. There must be a straightforward and fair way to complain

MOTORING REVIEW 35
New MG3 Some cars try too hard to look funky. The new supermini from MG is one of them. For me, the renowned MG name should be associated with class – not boy-racer, go-faster stripes and cheap interior plastics. Sorry to say the MG3 has both. But all is not lost because this little car will attract a wedge of the British motoring population for one big reason – the very low price tag. You see, the MG3 3Form Sport VTi-Tech model I drove only costs £9,549. For that sub 10 grand figure you get a small hatch which will certainly appeal to young and style conscious buyers. Exterior highlights include 16 inch diamond cut alloy wheels, light-emitting diode (LED) lights, a sport-design bumper, side sill extensions, a rear spoiler, a sports-design rear valance, chrome exhaust finishers and MG insert headlamps.
Furthermore, as it’s all the rage for cars aimed at the younger end of the motoring market to have an array of styling options, MG has made its latest model a blank canvas so it can be ‘personalised’. With three trim levels, 10 colours and a range of at least 10 graphic packs, young drivers with their first pay packet will be spoilt for choice! The combinations are almost endless. It’s all been done before by other manufacturers though and the attempt seems a tad contrived. Step inside and key features of the MG3 include air conditioning; a six-speaker audio system; Bluetooth; DAB radio, USB input, automatic lights and wipers, rear parking sensors, and fabric seats with part-leather trim. That’s a whole lot of kit - but the plastic-fantastic cabin spoils the party. Most surfaces, from the
doors to the dash, feel hard and, well, cheap. That said, the car is cut-price – so it’s a classic case of ‘you get what you pay for’. The most surprising aspect of the MG3 is the amount of space and versatility in an incredibly compact five-door package. The ‘rolled and raised’ front dashboard design creates an airy forward cabin space and increased legroom, while allowing excellent access to the controls. This theme is continued in the rear of the car, where the front seats are sculpted to allow your rear passengers enough space to travel in comfort. Best of all, the MG will accommodate four six footers; a level of room typically associated with larger cars. Behind the wheel, the MG3 delivers impressive levels of body control,
sharpness and a willingness to corner. Powered by a hale and hearty 103bhp 1498cc petrol engine, it darts about like a minnow, delivering sure footed handling and impressive ride comfort. The 0-62mph scurry of 10.9 seconds and top speed of 108mph makes the MG3 suitable for most trips, from jampacked urban routes, to fluid British B-roads or cruising on a European motorway. At just four-metres long and with five doors, the MG3 is really easy to drive and park too. It’s also practical with a small, but deep rectangular boot that will take the weekly shop – or even a child’s buggy. It has a distinctive stance and its ‘hockey stick’ shaped daylight running lights help give the MG3 a front ‘face’ unlike any other car.
