Diss Museum Diss Volunteer Infantry drilled on Diss Common and were the Dad’s Army of their day in the face of possible Napoleonic invasion. The museum recently acquired at auction a rare silver medal presented to one of their members in 1811. It was awarded for Proficiency at Military Exercises to Jabez Waller, who had just been promoted to Ensign. That was the lowest Officer rank, like Second Lieutenant now. Originally the junior officer carried the ensign flag. Jabez, born 1789, was the sixth child of John & Hannah Waller. In 1802 John was on the voting register, so was a man of means, at a time when ordinary people did not have the vote. Jabez married 18 year old Mary Fulcher in 1813 and they had eight children. When Mary died, aged about 29, Jabez married widow Martha Mulley. Jabez was, at various times, a bank clerk, grocer & draper, dealer and wine & spirit merchant with premises
in Saxmundham. One of our members, Brian Jones, spotted that the medal was coming up for auction and likely to cost between £500 and £800. We made an appeal in the press and, within a couple of days, had raised over £600. Brian did the bidding at the Fakenham auction and we now have the medal, the only pre-World War One decoration in our collection. It can be seen in the museum on Wednesday & Thursdays afternoons, all day Friday & Saturday, plus Sunday afternoons from May.

The Best, The Original & Official Diss Town Guide Is Coming. . . . Having produced the last 3 editions of the Diss Town Guide, the Dispatch Magazine team are busy preparing their 4th edition (the 22nd actual town guide)which promises to bring the most up to date and comprehensive information to all residents and businesses in Diss. In previous years we have worked closely with the Town Guide committee which was made up of representatives from the business sector of Diss, the Town Council and a few people responsible for collating some of the information. However, in more recent years the majority of information, updates, change of leadership at many of the clubs and organisations, new contact details etc has come directly to us, so we have been able to update the guide on a continual basis, without the need for so many people to be involved. We had planned to bring the new edition of the Town Guide out last year, but as we were unable to get any response from any member of the original committee or the Town Council, we felt we ought to just get on and reproduce the guide ourselves. After all, the Guide is a vital source of information for all residents
and businesses in Diss, and during these tough economic trading times, any publicity small businesses can get can only be a good thing. Businesses, Clubs and Organisations; If you haven’t already done so, please ensure we have your correct information for inclusion into the guide. Either email us your up to date contact details, including email address and Twitter etc, or simply call the Dispatch team on 01953 456789. There are other publications that claim to be the official guide, despite never putting one together before. To be sure. Ask if it is edited by Dispatch Magazine. Saturday 30th March 7.30pm. An original and unforgettable version of this great piece in which every sentence comes to life and which has real emotional impact. Instead of static soloists and huge choirs, just 12 performers play strangers who find themselves together in church. Each has a story to tell as they try to understand the world, some with faith, some without. A member of the audience said “This is the Messiah I have been waiting for all my life”. The Merry Opera Company’s recent production of La Traviata was described as “sensational” and their tour of the Messiah last autumn had a standing ovation at

every church where they performed. The Merry Opera Company widens the appeal of opera by staging professional shows in modern English that break the framework of tradition, while staying true to the core of the original. For those who love opera, the shows bring fresh interpretations of classic works. For those new to opera, the shows are understandable, interesting and enjoyable. Please Note: This event is in conjunction St Mary’s Diss and will be held in the church. Tickets available online at www.disscornhall.co.uk or contact the Box Office on 01379 652 241.

Newman & Co Real Time Information (RTI) – The biggest change to PAYE in 70 years! Many employers will have recently received a letter from HMRC informing them of their mandatory enrolment in RTI, the new monthly reporting regime for those operating a payroll scheme. For some, this may represent a significant additional administrative burden, especially for those still preparing manual payroll records. If you are already using recognised payroll reporting software, you should receive an update in time for the change to RTI in April this year.
Michael soon concentrated all his energies on the high demand for horticultural subjects. This led to the formation of a picture library, “Photos Horticultural” which he and his family ran for 39 years until 2007. Michael continues to travel, capturing images of plants and gardens. Entrance £5 which includes tea/coffee and biscuits. All proceeds to Christian Aid.
However, whatever your situation, it is advisable to review you current payroll solution and consider whether external assistance is required either in an advisory capacity or to prepare your payroll for you and ensure RTI compliance.

With the 31st January tax return deadline for the tax year of 2011-12 now well and
Penalties for late filing of Selfassessment personal tax returns
truly in the past, those registered for selfassessment that have failed to file their return will have recently received notice of their £100 penalty. To some this may not present a significant enough incentive to get their tax affairs in order and file their return. However, HMRC will encourage you to file your return by adding a £10 daily penalty from 1st May and for three months or until your tax return is filed. This potentially amounts to a further £900 of penalties. Further penalties will also be due if your return becomes more than 12 months late. These penalties will stay on your account, irrespective of whether you have any tax due. So, if you have outstanding tax returns due, it makes sense to get your record up to date! Diss Decorative & Fine Arts Society For the February lecture at Diss Decorative & Fine Arts Society [DissDFAS], renowned expert, Anne Anderson, covered not only the “Glasgow Boys” - the Scottish Artists group from the late Nineteenth century - but also the subsequent school of “Scottish Colourists”. Among the painters associated with the group were Joseph Crawhall, James Guthrie, George Henry, Atkinson Hormel, William Kennedy, John Lavery and Edward Arthur Walton together with many others who would meet at Macgregor’s studio. This large combined topic was presented in a rapid and refreshing style that left some of the audience of 130 members overwhelmed by the sheer weight of information. Anne’s comprehensive lecture was accompanied by slick illustrations which again were too much for some of the viewers. However, the oblique overarching theme of her excellent performance was clear and showed the emergence of Glasgow as a modern and wealthy cultural centre from the 1880’s which picked up the influence of Japanese prints - very popular at that time - and also that of the major French arts movements in a way that was not apparent in the rest of
the United Kingdom. This theme was taken through into the 20th century together with the unique development of Scottish modern art that built on these adopted French styles. Linking this thesis to the Scottish Colourists, such as John Ferguson, Francis Cadell and Samuel Peploe, Anne was able to endorse her conclusions and was well appreciated for her energy, style and knowledge of a very broad topic little generally known today. The April Lecture will be presented by Elizabeth Merry and is something completely different: Travels in Rajasthan with Rudyard Kipling. Tuesday, 16th April 2013 Roydon Village Hall from 1.30pm. Tea & Coffee is served before the presentation. Car parking is available but may be restricted during the winter months. For more details on lectures and membership, visit: www.dissdfas.org.uk

Besthorpe W.I. On February 27th twenty-one members and four visitors gathered in the Francis Room to welcome our speaker Jean Stimpson who told us of her very unusual career There was a tradition in her family of serving in the police force and Jean decided that she would like to follow in the family footsteps. In the fifties very few women were police officers. However Jean trained and served in Norwich for five years before leaving on her marriage. In the late fifties and early sixties there were no mobile phones and each officer on the beat had to ring HQ every eighty minutes from a police telephone point to report where they were and what was going on. Having raised her family she saw an advertisement for a store detective and thought she would give it a try. She remained in this job for 25 years, moving very frequently from store to store, and told of the strategies she employed, the many varieties of thefts encountered and the procedures for dealing with them. Remarkably in all this long period she was only once
physically assaulted. We all agreed that she is a courageous woman. On 24th April Cameron Reid will talk about osteopathic treatment. We shall try a different therapy on 22nd May, our thirtieth birthday, with hands on flower arranging guided by Marrgaret Thomas. On 12th June, for our summer outing, we shall visit the Marble Hall in Surrey Street, the original home of the Norwich Union. The same evening we shall gather at Zuari for a light supper. Besthorpe W.I. meet in the Francis Room of the Connaught Hall at 7.30pm on the fourth Wednesday of the month. Visitors are always welcome to our meetings and we should like to point out that you do not have to live in Besthorpe to visit us, or to join us! Dorothy Woolliscroft

Attleborough & District Horticultural Society The next meeting of the society will take place on Wednesday 17th April at which Hilary Reid will be giving an illustrated talk entitled “Recycling in the Garden”. This will be at our usual venue of Attleborough Junior School, commencing at 7.30pm. Hilary is a very interesting speaker and non-members of the society are reminded that they are most welcome to come along. On Saturday April 20th we will be staging our annual Spring Show. This is held at the Connaught Hall in Attleborough and doors open at 2pm. With any luck, the slow start to the spring should ensure that exhibits should be around their peak by then, and as this is an open show please contact the show secretary, Betty Stacey, on 01953 454790 for a schedule if you are interested in exhibiting. The February meeting incorporated the AGM, postponed from January due to the snowy weather. Proceedings began with one minutes silence for Peter Beales, who had been President of the society
for many years and always a very active supporter of our aims. Following the AGM Bob Dart of Caston Camera Club gave an illustrated talk entitled “Let’s Photograph Flowers”. He showed several types of digital cameras, ranging in price from £50 to £2,000 and explained what each could achieve. The main thrust of his talk was to learn to control the shutter speed and aperture yourself rather than rely on automatic camers settings. He also gave some tips on achieving more imaginative images and backed up his talk with many of his own favourite flower pictures. The winner and runner-up in last year’s table show competition were announced: John Frost first and Ron Brewer second - a repeat of the 2011 result. Entries were sparse in the table show at this meeting with winners being Betty Stacey, Ron Brewer and John Frost.

Breckland’s Big Switch And Save Officers from Breckland Council have been working hard on a scheme to get residents to sign up for the Norfolk -wide energy switch, which aims to slash energy bills for residents by as much as £171 a year. The new joint initiative from councils across Norfolk has seen five local authorities establish a dedicated Collective Energy Switching programme on an initial one year basis, to get people to join together in a collective bulk-buying group. Residents can sign up from 1st March by visiting www.bigswitchandsave.co.uk from the comfort of their own home. If you don’t have access to the internet you can sign up by calling 01362 656870 or pop into one of the Council’s customer service centres where staff will be able to hep you. People will need a recent energy bill, an annual statement is best. Anyone can sign up to save but, there’s no obligation to go ahead. Once the auction is completed everybody will be informed of how much they could save. If it turns out you are one of the very few who are already on a lower tariff you simply don’t swap. At the start of April, the group of councils will go to auction with details of those wanting a cheaper deal on electricity and gas from energy companies.
The Norfolk Big Switch and Save programme will build upon work undertaken by Norwich City Council which signed up 1768 residents for an auction on 26th November 2012. The average saving from that auction was £171 with one lucky household seeing a reduction of over £501 per year! The news comes after surging energy costs have led to calls from charities, consumer groups and local authorities to urge Norfolk residents to take control of their fuel bills. The new scheme was launched at 11am on Friday 1st March, in Nelson Place Dereham and people can sign up on the street if they have their most recent energy bill with them or get further information and help from Council Officers who will be on hand to answer any questions. Leader of Breckland Council, William Nunn said; “This is a great step forward and will show the people of Breckland that when local authorities work together we can make a difference to their lives. This scheme could
potentially benefit every single person that signs up.
Deadline to sign up to the Big Switch and Save is Monday 8th April.
“We recognise that right now everything seems to be going up whilst jobs are being lost and wage increases are at a standstill. It’s not an easy time for anyone right now but this collective energy deal may just ease things a little for those struggling to make ends meet.”
Double Champions To Visit Norwich The East Anglian Brass Band Association is delighted to welcome Double Champions, Fodens Band to St Andrew’s Hall on Sunday 12th May 2013 to perform its 75th Annual Gala Concert commencing at 6.30pm. In September 2012 the band became the British Open Brass Band Champions and in October 2012 was crowned the National Brass Band Champions. It is a very rare occurrence for a band to win both titles in the same year. The band has an excellent reputation for providing top class entertainment and the audience can look forward to a superb performance from the band that is currently ranked second in the world.
The concert follows the Association’s Spring contest which takes place earlier in the day. The contest features local brass bands who will each play a twenty five minute concert. Rosedale Funeral Home in Attleborough will be hosting a very special exhibition of photography during April in a bid to trigger much needed discussion around the often taboo subject of death and dying. Photographer Nadia Bettega was commissioned by the Dying Matters Coalition to create a series of images reflecting the theme of Dying Matters Awareness Week and the resulting ‘Small Actions, Big Difference’ photography exhibition is on tour around the country until July 2013 stopping off at Rosedale for the week commencing 8th April. The photographs sensitively capture the seemingly minor actions that can make a powerful difference to the quality of life for people in their final days, and for those who care for them.
thousands of individual farmers become sustainable and profitable. Shelley brought the Fairtrade products that the Attleborough branch sells including one of their top selling lines the humble and hugely popular banana. The Attleborough branch has donated 352 bananas enough for the whole school to take with them on their cultural trip to London this week.
Attleborough Bible Society Text and Thought for the Month April 2013 Jesus said: “Don’t be faithless any longer. Believe!” John 20:27 Thomas just wouldn’t believe that his master, executed on the cross by the Roman soldiers, could still be alive! Yes, his fellow disciples had talked of meeting with Jesus, very much alive, with a new body! But Thomas just couldn’t accept their words. He wanted tangible proofs!
A week later, Jesus visited his disciples and invited Thomas to see for himself the reality of his wounds and gently rebuked Thomas for his unbelief. Thomas realised that Jesus was in fact truly God in a body that would never die and worshipped Him then and there! We too can discover for ourselves the reality of eternal life by inviting Him into our hearts. His presence in us will then take away our fear of death, for death has been swallowed up in the miracle of the resurrection!
“We are really proud to be bringing this exhibition to the Attleborough area” says Funeral Administrator Mark Hall. Death and dying are difficult subject to talk about, but at Rosedale we see first-hand what a difference it can make to the bereaved families if these difficult conversations do take place. A lack of conversation is perhaps the most important reason why peoples’ wishes go ignored or unfulfilled; if we do not know how to communicate our wishes, and those around us do not know how to listen, it is almost impossible to express a clear choice.” Each picture tells a story, for example Anne Warnett’s son Pete died a year ago. “I remember once having a discussion with him about religion or what sort of funeral service he wanted. I can’t remember who brought it up, me or him. I think it began by him asking me whether I thought God or heaven existed. I am not a religious person, and I don’t think Pete was either, so together we decided on what kind of funeral he wanted. After he died, we arranged a humanist service that was conducted by a wonderful man, not a priest or a vicar, just a normal person. But he
April 2013
did a wonderful job and it was more like a remembrance or celebration of his life, than a funeral. We played Nessun Dorma and Red Red Robin as the exit song.” Rosedale will be encouraging people to hold discussions such as these and continue the debate by taking part in various activities during Dying Matters Awareness week in May, including a pledge wall where you create a ‘life list’ of things you most want to do during your life - Take a shower in a waterfall? Get that book published? There are five different categories: • I’d like to meet….. • I’d like to visit….. • I’d like to learn….. • I’d like to start….. • I’d like to be remembered ….. You will also be challenged to consider writing a will, making a funeral plan, starting to plan for your future care and support, telling those close to you your true feelings and making sure your loved ones know your plans. Then you can get on with living the rest of your life, with the peace of mind that these things are taken care of. In March 2009 the Bank of England reduced its base rate down to half of one per cent and 4 years later and rates are still at that level.

There are even radical plans now being reported (March 2013) that savers may be hit again by negative interest rates. The proposal to force high street banks to pay the Bank of England for holding money rather than receive interest has been put forward by Paul Tucker, Deputy Governor of The Bank of England. The idea is that this will help solve the credit crisis by encouraging high street banks to lend money to struggling companies in the UK (Denmark introduced negative interest rates for the first time in its history last July, offering rates on some deposits of minus 0.2 per cent). Savers must be concerned by the current conditions as interest rates
continue to fall. The Bank of England has introduced a Funding for Lending Scheme with a view that this will increase lending and one of the effects of this is that interest rates on deposits have fallen further. Cheaper rates from the Bank of England, under this scheme, has resulted in the high street banks having to pay less on deposit accounts for savers. Low interest rates for four years and inflation still above the Bank of England’s target of two per cent is not good for savers. Perhaps Mark Carney, the new Governor of The Bank of England may have different ideas on monetary policy when he takes over later in the year. Perhaps it is also time to speak to us to find out our ideas how it may be possible to get higher returns on your savings!
The answer is that we are members of a larger consortium, the Freedom Travel Group which in turn is part of the Co-operative Group Ltd. This membership allows us to have complete independent control over our own business, whilst benefiting from the

Whether you are a convicted driver, young driver, or have limited no claims bonus, we can find the policy cover specific to your requirements.
Keith Dutton our Vice Chairman opened he meeting with his traditional humour and greeted twenty two members and our speaker Sylvia Barrett to our second monthly meeting. Once again he stressed the importance of our forthcoming AGM in April when members should volunteer for positions on the committee. Keith also brought to members attention that the National Express service coaches from Attleborough to the airports would cease from April 1st and that there was a protest petition for people to sign in the Travel Agents in town for many who use this service.
We have negotiated special rates with our panel of Insurers for those careful drivers and special introductory discounts for those without any no claim bonus. We are always able to offer instalment facilities. We deal with many leading UK Insurers and Lloyds Underwriters to provide the best possible quotation and cover for our clients, regardless of the risk. Being totally independent means that we are not tied to a single provider and this allows us access to a range of insurance policies from our panel of carefully
selected Insurers. Why not let us compare the market for you and deal on a personal level with your requirements. Priory Insurance Brokers are a locally owned, independent, professional organisation who have been based in South Norfolk for over 40 years. We would be pleased to provide quotations or advice for you and look forward to receiving your enquiry. For more information, please feel free to call in to our Wymondham Office.
A proposed revised constitution of the club was handed to members for consideration at the AGM. Our speaker for the day
Sylvia Barrett gave us a very interesting talk accompanied by slides entitled “Curiosities” she had travelled the length and breadth of the UK photographing a multitude of unusual items ranging from Pagodas to the Ropery in Chatham Dock yard. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to our speaker by Trevor Nicholls remarking on the unusual things which she had accumulated over a long period of time. Don’t Be Shy - Of RTI If you are an employer it’s pretty likely that by now you have been hearing all about the new HMRC PAYE system which comes into effect from April 2013. RTI stands for Real Time Information, and it is exactly that. Instead of making returns to H M Revenue and Customs every year in March or April, all employers must send a return to HMRC every month with the payroll details. Not only that, but HMRC require a lot more information about employees such as the number of hours worked, dates of birth and home address to name a few. If you are an employer and the new payroll requirements are giving you a headache why not come and see us here at KBA? We have payroll services to fit all sizes of business and have special rates too.

20 THE RED LION - CASTON
The Red Lion Caston The Mulberry Tree is expanding, and Philip and Victoria Milligan are pleased to announce they have also taken over The Red Lion in Caston. They are keen to stress that they are still at the helm at The Mulberry Tree and their commitment there remains unchanged. “When the opportunity to take over The Red Lion came we went over to visit and instantly fell in love with the building. It’s a gorgeous little pub on the green in the heart of Caston. It’s just 10 minutes from Attleborough so making going between the two businesses viable. Thankfully we have a really good team around us which makes this really easy to do. We have real strength and depth in our chefs and front of house staff which means that we can offer consistency at both premises.
April 2013
We really don’t have a high turnover of staff, our head chef Haydn and Sharon from front of house have been with us since we opened 10 years ago this May. We have closed The Red Lion down for a couple of weeks to redecorate and put our stamp on it. We plan to open on the 22nd March. Initially we will be opening 6pm-11pm Tuesday to Saturday and from 12pm to 5pm on Sundays. We may possibly extend the opening hours to include some other lunch times once we have found our feet. Being in a village pub will be very different to what we are used to. We think that The Red Lion and The Mulberry Tree will complement each other well. When we are fully booked at The Mulberry Tree we now have somewhere to recommend! The Red Lion menu will be good honest pub food but done well (with a twist of course)
and obviously a traditional roast on Sundays! The Mulberry Tree is open all day Monday to Saturday, we have seven lovely Hotel rooms which are really popular. At lunchtimes we have a selection of light lunches from £7.95, if you are in a hurry at lunchtimes you can preorder and we will have your lunch ready for you. We think the offering at The Mulberry Tree is perfect whether it’s for a special celebration or popping in midweek, there is enough variety to suit both! A vast amount of our customers return again and again which hopefully means we are doing something right, we hope we can extend this to The Red Lion also!
We look forward to seeing everyone at either The Mulberry Tree or the Red Lion. . . or both!” April 2013
22 Millbank estate agents
Millbank Estate Agents Have Moved. Eighteen years ago Tony Beales acquired the well known and established firm of Millbank & Co located prominently on the corner of Connaught Plain in Attleborough; little did he know then that the business would be expanding eighteen years later into fully refurbished prestigious new 2 storey offices with car parking. “When I took the business over in 1994 the country, as it is today was in recession, times were very tough and the economic climate was uncertain, with it being my first ever business venture I didn’t have a lot of money, so I kept costs tight with my sole ambition being, to get through the first year, survive, then reinvest in the second year, do the same in year 3 and see where I was at”. Following some very successful years from those early days, the business grew and grew, took on more staff and in 2008 Millbank Letting Agents was set up from a cold start and very quickly established itself as a front runner in the local lettings market, “this was the ideal
April 2013
time to enter the lettings market as the property market was beginning to stall and by the end of the year, the bank crash that followed then caused house prices to fall”. As the business continued to grow, especially on the Lettings side, it soon became apparent that the current premises Millbank were operating from on Connaught Plain was restricting natural growth, more room was needed along with more staff and more storage. “Obviously enjoying the location that Connaught Plain offered was a huge benefit and one I was reluctant to move away from however any planned expansion in Connaught Plain offices was going to be severely restricted due to the lack of space”. “Early last year I decided to look at some options about relocating the company to larger premises in the town but also making sure that it wouldn’t harm the business, as relocating can have a negative impact as I have seen before in
@Dispatch_Mag Millbank estate agents 23
other towns I have worked in, in the past, the move had to be timed right and the location had to be right also”. “Once I had found the ideal premises, the initial idea had been to relocate in the autumn of last year but we were very busy on both sales and lettings, so it was decided to carry out the move in December, traditionally a quieter time of year. The refurbishment and renovations all went very well, a few surprises along the way which is to be expected, but all the tradesman and women I employed to carry out the improvement work were very sympathetic and grasped what I was aiming to achieve, I was very lucky that everyone I used in this project did an absolutely superb first class job and within the tight time constraints I placed upon them, as the move had to be completed by the 12th December 2012, I think it’s fair to say that the quality of workmanship is reflected in how the office looks today”. Attleborough ‘s longest established estate agent, Millbank Estate Agents
now has a new home in Exchange Street, the light, bright and spacious new offices offer clients and customers the opportunity to feel relaxed in discussing their business, the feature rustic red brick facing back wall compliments so well the front office showroom with its well illuminated window displays which include 2 digital property screens scrolling all available properties, something unique to Attleborough Estate Agents. The new double fronted office provides a window exclusively for Lettings on one side and Residential sales on the other with lettings having its own office on the ground floor to the rear of the building. These new offices set the perfect platform for Millbank Estate Agents to move forward and add to the high standards they’ve already set and they look forward to welcoming clients old and new into their new office for a busy 2013.

Norfolk Tortoise Club March is the time when Tortoises should be waking from hibernation. To help a tortoise wake from a too longer sleep, allow a hibernation box to rise from a safe 4-6c to room temperate over a 24hour period. You should be able to hear your tortoises moving around. A soak in warm water for 20mins and some warmth from a heat lamp can help kick start a shelled friend for spring.

PAWS & CLAWS 27
Make Sure The Easter Bunny ...doesn’t visit your dog!...
Many of our team have over 40 years experience in tortoises rescue as well as welfare.
Easter is just around the corner, meaning that it is important (just as it is all year round) to keep chocolate, cakes and chocolate-coated goodies safely away from your pets.
The group has been established for nearly 10 years, with over 500 members, we actively encourage tortoise welfare through a wide variety of projects including talks and educational events.
Many people are not aware of the danger if their pet consumes chocolate, but the effects can be fatal.
Take your pet to a Veterinary Centre immediately where he or she will be induced to vomit unless the pet is twitchy, unaware of his/her surroundings or seizuring. There is no antidote for chocolate poisoning which is why it is so important to keep chocolate securely away from your pet. If your pet has ingested chocolate he/she may need to be hospitalised by your vet for supportive treatment and observation.
Spot the signs You may have to offer temporary accommodation with a heat source in a utility area, greenhouse or shed until it is frost free and warm enough for a tortoise to be active outdoors without assistance. Although a crunchy piece of lettuce or cucumber can help get a tortoise feeding in spring. Don’t forget salad, vegetables and fruit are junk food and should only be a small part of a healthy tortoise diet. Whenever possible feed natural Norfolk weeds and flowers such as sedum, honey suckle, lavatera, forget-me-nots, plantain, milk thistle and hibiscus. If your tortoise does not begin to feed within one week of waking, consult a knowledgeable vet. Free health checks are available at Norfolk’s Tortoise Club at Heartsease Church Hall, Norwich the third Wednesday of every month from 8pm (next date Wednesday 17th April).
Also with spring approaching the club are keen to meet local people who are interested in training to rehome a tortoise as a pet. Downloadable information packs can be found at www.tortoiseclub.org. Alternatively come along to a monthly meeting or events and speak to a member of the team or call Dafney on 01603 435723
Clinical signs are usually seen within 6-12 hours of eating. Initial signs include increased thirst, vomiting, diarrhoea and restlessness. These signs can progress to hyperactivity, high or low blood pressure and in some cases a coma. Due to the high fat content of chocolate, it can also trigger pancreatitis in some animals. Fatality is usually due to changes to the heart rhythm, high temperature or respiratory failure. If you think your pet may have ingested chocolate…
If the ingestion and the treatment are performed in the first 2-4 hours, the prognosis is usually good so it is incredibly important to contact your vet as soon as you suspect your pet may have ingested chocolate. Even if he/she has only eaten what you may think is a small amount, still contact your vet for their advice. The Old Golfhouse Veterinary Group have 4 centres in Norfolk & Suffolk and are happy to answer any of your concerns regarding this, or any other concern regarding your pet.

Aston Martin Vantage S By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motor TradeBook Test Drive Editor ASTON MARTIN is one of the most revered automotive brand names on the planet. So, getting a chance to drive one of the beautifully crafted cars from the British motor manufacturer has to be on the wish list of many. Well, luckily our wish came true very recently. We were invited to the global headquarters of Aston Martin Lagonda at Gaydon in Warwickshire, to sample one of the hottest models on the block the Vantage S. Was it glorious, exquisite and powerful? Of course it was. The ‘S’ is the most significant outward indication that the car is different to the already acclaimed Vantage. Basically the engineering team at Gaydon looked at every single performance attribute of the standard model, from engine and transmission to suspension, steering, brakes and tyres, and considered what was required to make this car deserving of the coveted ‘S’ badge. The result is

a pure driver-focussed package that exploits and emphasises the sporting nature of the iconic Vantage. The 4.7 litre V8 engine has been modified to deliver peak power of 430bhp at 7200rpm and torque of 361lb/ft at 5000rpm, representing an increase of 10bhp and 14.75lb/ft respectively. In addition, the car features a new automated manual seven speed gearbox. It is one of the best features of the car because it enhances the acceleration feel and gives you increased control. Driver interaction with the gearbox is made as simple as possible to allow you to concentrate on the road ahead. Two column-mounted paddles allow an up or a down shift through the gears, and you can always locate them with ease no matter what position the steering wheel is in. As well as selecting gears manually with the paddle-shift, you are also able to select the ‘D’ button on the facia to

engage automatic mode. This acts like a traditional automatic gearbox changing gear at precisely the right time, making light work of urban traffic and motorway driving. But the Vantage S’ sporting character really comes into its own when the ‘Sport’ button is depressed, It gives you faster gear changes and it prevents the car changing up to the next cog when the revolution limit is reached. The default ‘normal’ provides a more progressive throttle response suited to more everyday situations. The Vantage S also features a unique exhaust muffler specifically tuned to aurally define its sporting intent. In ‘Sport’ mode the car produces a wonderful crackle. It’s a sound that is utterly magnificent. Step inside and the tailored Vantage S’ cabin hints at the car’s dynamic capabilities, defined by a distinctive three-track stitch detail on the doors and on the seats. A folded leather design runs along the sewn tracks, echoing the gills of a shark. And, needless to say, the sumptuous seats cosset you, providing support during high-spirited driving, while remaining comfortable on long journeys.
The Vantage S coupe is hand built entirely in England and, unsurprisingly, it has an exceptional character. Of course, it is far from cheap; but, price-tags aside, you’d have to have a heart of stone not to fall in love with this glorious machine.
