Gave an entertaining talk on a trip to Hungary in the company of her Hungarian son-in-law and family. The tour took in some of the wonderful sights of Budapest but also a visit to a rural area in the NorthEast where Peter’s parents lived. This gave them the chance to see a part of the country not usually visited by foreign tourists and they were surprised by the wreckage of indigenous agriculture left after the Russian occupation. The highlight of the return to Budapest was a visit to one of their famous cake shops with an astonishing array of goodies. Eleanor was thanked for her lively descriptions and the accompanying selection of photographs and embroideries. Notice was given of a possible trip to Ely in May. The February meeting on Tuesday 14th will be the fifth AGM of the group.

Diss Decorative & Fine Arts Society
Diss Museum
Within seconds of starting the Christmas lecture to Diss Decorative & Fine Arts Society [Diss DFAS], Bertie Pearce had enthralled and amazed his audience.
The museum is putting on an entertainment, using sketches from the pageants of 1990 and 2000 and original material. We are getting together a cast to re-create the hilarity remembered from those shows, with scenes like the classic School For Spies. This was first performed by the WARTS group in 2000 and features a German officer teaching agents broad Norfolk before being parachuted into East Anglia.
This comprehensive history and art appreciation presentation on “Wonderworkers and the Art of Illusion” was also a tour de force of pure variety show. In covering 4000 years of the history of illusion he thrilled the audience of more than a hundred members and remained one step ahead with his quick comedy and baffling stagecraft. Constantly involving the audience in the illusions and skilled “magic”, Bertie also maintained a clear thread of the story of Wonderworkers from Seneca’s description 2000 years ago of the cup and balls trick through to the TV displays of Darren Brown today. A wonderful pre Christmas treat it was captured in his final quote
from the American magician, Doug Henning, “The art of the magician is to create a sense of wonder. If we leave with a sense of wonder our lives become filled with joy”…………..and we still did not know how he did it! After the lecture members enjoyed the traditional Christmas wine and mince pies among the buzz of excitement from a great performance. The February lecture for Diss DFAS is on Tuesday, 21st February 2012 when Diane Lloyd will be speaking on English Art Deco Ceramics: Clarice Cliff, Susie Cooper and Ruskin. New members are always welcome to try the experience of our high standard lectures - just come along for Two O’clock on that Tuesday.
If you want to have a laugh and learn something about Diss history, come to the church on the afternoon of Saturday 18th February.
The laughter could be heard in the dressing room as the class chanted lines like: “Cor blast, tha’s suffin’ cold.” Another scene features the redoubtable Mrs. Bessington who, in welcoming the Americans in World War 2, encourages them to familiarise themselves with our Broads.
“Sometimes them ploughed fields look so duzzy lonesome.” If we can get enough actors there is also an original Dad’s Army sketch, with the Walmington-onSea platoon trying to catch a dangerous female spy. Captain Mainwaring asks if the men have seen any strange women. Private Walker says, “I went out with one the other night. She was strange. I took her to the football, then round the back of the allotments. I said, ‘Shall we have a bit of hanky-panky?’ and she said, ‘No.’ Now that is strange.” Tickets for the 2.30pm show, Over the Years, are £5, including refreshments, from the Parish Office or at the door.
Other characters include Pearl and Vera, first seen as girls in wartime trying to get themselves a Yank by showing a bit of leg. 50 years later we hear them reminiscing about their American lovers. One, thinking wistfully of her lost GI, says,

Comercrawley The personal injury lawyers. Your questions answered…… Question: I recently had an accident in a local clothes store. I was shopping in the store when I caught my body on one of the clothes rails and suffered quite a nasty injury as a result. I didn’t see the metal rail and noticed afterwards that there weren’t any clothes on the rail. Please advise me as to whether I can pursue a claim for compensation. Answer: There is no automatic right to compensation arising from the fact that you had an accident in the clothes shop and suffered an injury as a result. To succeed with a claim you will need to show some kind of legal liability on the part of the shop. Under the Occupiers Liability Act 1957, the shop and its staff owe a duty of care to customers to ensure that they are
reasonably safe and not exposed to the risk of foreseeable injury. A similar duty of care is owed in negligence. It can be argued that if a metal clothes rail (which protrudes outwards) is left empty, it becomes a hazard as it is foreseeable that a customer may walk into it or catch themselves on it when they are walking around the store and be injured as a result. For this reason, staff are often trained to ensure that rails are not left empty and further to ensure that garments are pushed to the end of the rail. It will however be a question of what is reasonable and therefore if it was the case that previously the rail was well stocked but it only recently became empty due to customers taking items off of the rail to buy, your claim is less likely to succeed. This is because it is not reasonable to expect staff to ensure that rails are
adequately stocked all of the time. If you were to pursue a claim for compensation, it may be argued by the shop’s insurers that you were partly (or wholly) to blame for the accident in failing to notice the rail and to take reasonable care for your own safety. This is known as an allegation of ‘contributory negligence’ and may have the effect of reducing your claim for compensation (for example, if it was decided that you were 25% contributory negligent, your compensation would be reduced by one quarter). Whether or not an allegation of contributory negligence
is likely to succeed will depend on the precise circumstances. Consideration will however be given for the fact that customers will be concentrating on looking at the items on sale and therefore may not notice certain things. If you have a question for our legal advice team you can submit it by email: enquiries@comercrawley.co.uk or in writing to: Chancery House, Victoria Road, Diss, Norfolk IP22 4HZ.

Redwoods – Tallest Trees On Earth By Joan Garnham, Waveney Tree Specialists. The family Sequoia is named after a Native American Cherokee, Sequoiah, and is divided into coast and giant redwoods. Though they covered much of the Northern Hemisphere millions of years ago, redwood trees now grow only in China and two areas of California (and a small grove in Oregon). They were first brought to Europe in 1840 and named Wellingtonia in commemoration of the Duke of Wellington. A good sales ploy as they quickly became a ‘must have’ by all the large estates. The wood has a high tannin content giving the intense red; this also makes the wood and bark resistant to insects and disease. The bark has a high moisture content enabling the tree to withstand forest fires. There are no branches for 60% of the height and have been likened to a nail standing on its head as there is no deep tap root and the root system is shallow in relation to their height - only 10-13ft deep and
spreading 60-80 ft around the tree. They are extremely flexible and sway in the wind as though they were dancing. The dramatic fat trunked giants (some have been hollowed out to drive a car through) are not normally the tallest as the tops have been blown out by high winds but are still an impressive 2000years old There are 3 easily accessible drive through trees; Chandelier, Shrine and Tour all found on Highway 101. Coast Redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) are found in a 450 mile narrow strip along California’s North Pacific coast. They can live for 2,200 years and grow up to 378ft and a trunk diameter of 22ft. The bark can be up to 12 inch thick. In 2006 three record breakers were found; Hyperion 378ft, Helios 376ft and Icarus 371ft. Prior to these discoveries, the tallest was Stratosphere Giant at 370ft. Sadly the site of these trees is protected as too many sightseers would compact the roots and kill the trees. They reach their maximum height between 300-700 years. Coast redwoods are the only conifers that can not only reproduce
by seed cones but also by sprouting from the parent root and stump. Burls, large lumpy tissue growths on trunks and fallen logs is a third method of reproduction. Giant Redwood (Sequoiadendron giganteum) is found alongside the coast redwoods; they do not grow as tall but have a greater girth. The world’s largest living organism is the giant redwood General Sherman standing at 274.9 ft with a diameter of 36.5ft and weighing 2,105 tonne. It is thought to be over 3,000years old. The giant redwood was introduced into Britain in 1853. Only 4% of the original 2,000,000 acres of Californian Redwood Forest remain and is now strictly watched over and protectd by the Rangers. Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia) is more closely related to Swamp Cypress and originates from China. Thought to be extinct until 1941 and introduced to the West in 1948. This is one of the few conifers which lose its needles in the winter. Planting of any of these magnificent trees should really be kept
to open parkland where they have plenty of room to grow and thrive; they are certainly not suitable for the average garden. If you look carefully at the picture, you will see people at the base of the tree – little white dots. Imagine that in a suburban garden!

Assured Shorthold Tenancies Obtaining Possession and Tenancy Deposit Schemes. A tenancy agreement is a contract between a landlord and a tenant.
There are two ways in which possession of a property can be obtained:-
It sets out each party’s rights and obligations in relation to the property. It is never a good idea to let a property without a tenancy agreement.
1. Breach of terms of the tenancy agreement or non-payment of rent
Similarly, it is sound advice to ensure the tenancy agreement you enter into is comprehensive.
You may commence a claim for possession on the grounds that the tenants have not paid the rent due or are in breach of the terms of the tenancy agreement; or
If you have an Assured Shorthold Tenancy Agreement which started after the 6 April 2007 you must protect your tenant’s deposit using a tenancy deposit protection (TDP) scheme. If your tenant is covered by the TDP legislation and you do not protect their deposit it is possible you may be unable to regain possession of your property at the end of the tenancy.
2. The fixed period of the tenancy has expired - accelerated procedure If the fixed period of the tenancy has come to an end and you simply wish to recover possession of the property you must serve a Section 21 Notice Seeking Possession. The deposit must be lodged using a TDP scheme prior to service of the Section 21
Notice. If you have not done so you are unable to rely upon the Section 21 Notice when seeking possession of the property through the court. In order to rectify this you will be required to lodge the deposit, comply with the scheme’s requirements and serve a further Section 21 Notice. Such a delay could be both costly and time consuming. For a free Assured Shorthold Tenancy health check or any queries regarding the Tenancy Deposit Scheme please contact Beverly Phillips or Paul Stevens on 01379 643555 or by email at beverly.phillips@jackamans.co.uk or paul.stevens@jackamans.co.uk.

Attleborough Amateur Boxing Club
Share Your Jubilee Memories!
Has gained more success by being awarded with the National Clubmark accreditation.
The Queen celebrated her Golden Jubilee with a massive party in her back garden with pop stars galore and a spectacular firework display.
Clubmark is the only national cross sports quality accreditation scheme for clubs with junior sections. It is built around a set of core criteria which ensures that accredited clubs operate to a set of consistent, accepted and adopted minimum operating standards. The club has worked hard to be awarded this accreditation which culminated in a Gym Inspection by the Amateur Boxing Association of England.
She celebrated her Silver Jubilee at St Paul’s Cathedral with 2,700 specially selected guests.
Co D m isp pe at tit ch io n
Matthew Williams National Workforce Development Manager for the Amateur Boxing Association of England said that “Attleborough ABC have shown real commitment in achieving the high standards that Clubmark requires of clubs. The award of Clubmark accreditation is testament to the commitment of all of the club’s coaches and volunteers who work tirelessly to support the ongoing development of their boxers. On behalf of the ABAE I would like to congratulate Attleborough ABC and I’m sure that they will continue to go from strength to strength in 2012 and beyond.”
The Club is now only 1 of 3 sports clubs in the Town of Attleborough which has achieved this accreditation clubs and 1 of 3 Amateur Boxing Clubs in the whole of Norfolk. Jeremy Burton, Chairman of Attleborough Amateur Boxing club, said he was delighted that the club had achieved this accreditation as it showed to the local community that the club followed best practice and maintained high levels at all times particularly in the Junior Section. And a special thanks to Pam Riley & Jon Dennis ( Head Coach ) at the Club for spearheading this initiative. The club has also just finished a refurbishment of it’s Deopham Road Gym with heating and new lighting & ceiling being installed making it a first class indoor sports and leisure facility with an open evening being planned for 1st February for the general public. Further details regarding the award, the refurbishment or open evening can be obtained by contacting Peter Neal on 01953 453644.
Across Great Britain people put flags out and celebrated the day. But how was the Jubilee for you? Did it go with a bang and a massive street party? Or did you have a quiet one watching the celebrations on the TV? Breckland Council’s memories festival will involve people of all ages by looking at memorabilia and stories from the Queen’s Coronation in 1953 up to and including her Diamond Jubilee this year. Creating an archive to pass on
to future generations is important and the Council need your help to build an exhibition of memories, stories and pictures from the past 60 years to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The exhibition will visit each library in the district for a week at a time, starting on 30th April at Thetford library. The year closed with a very jolly Christmas Celebration when the “Pearlies” entertained us on their very last performance. They have retired after a long career of songs (and Norfolk jokes from Joan). They will be sorely missed by many of the clubs etc in the area. They have made a lot of donations to the East Anglia Air Ambulance over the years from any fees earned. The old time songs rendered were joined in with gusto. The
meeting on January 30th was the A.G.M. and on February 27th we look forward to hearing from Cliff Amos again, this time he will be telling us about the History of the Attleborough Fire Service. Cliff’s talks are always very interesting. The meeting takes place from 2 pm to 4 pm at the Church Hall. New members are always welcome and any further information can be obtained from Mrs Doreen Parker (secretary) on 01953 456958.

Buyer Beware Warns Funeral Home A Diss funeral home has hit out at tactics employed by door-to-door salesmen operating in the area.
Above: Town Mayor Karen Pettitt and Mr Levy Utku
Rosedale Funeral Home is urging people to take their time when buying funeral plans and to remember that they have a seven-day cooling off period.
“At the end of the day people buy funeral plans for peace of mind so it’s worrying to hear that people may not be buying what they thought.
“We understand that funeral plan sales teams are operating throughout the area and are concerned that people may be misled into thinking they are representing local funeral homes such as ours, when this is absolutely not the case,” said Anne Beckett-Allen.
Buying a funeral plan is a positive thing to do and it would be sad if people are put off by the type of worrying stories we’re hearing.”
“In common with most funeral homes we offer a choice of funeral plans, but would never sell door-to-door as we feel this puts people under pressure. “If you are thinking of investing in a funeral plan my advice would be to ask around, take your time and to be clear about what it is you are actually buying.

A power flush can restore circulation and efficiency to your central heating system by removing these products. The process involves connecting a power flushing pump to the existing central heating pump valves, or across the tails of a radiator. Specialist chemicals are then pumped around the heating system to loosen and mobilise the unwanted debris.
Each radiator is then individually flushed until clean and on completion, an inhibitor is added to prevent further corrosion. The whole process is carried out with minimal disturbance and disruption. Health, beauty & wellbeing Winter Skin Care We may sweat more, shave more, and soak up more sun in warmer months, but with the winter comes a whole new tricky set of beauty issues we must contend with. Slathering on head-to-toe moisturiser may seem like the solution, but preventing dried out, flaky skin involves a little more work. Here are 10 simple tips to ward off lowtemperatures, gusty winds, and dry heat. Follow these basic rules and you’ll stay silky smooth all over till spring. 1. Opt for oil-based moisturizers The main change in your winter skin care regimen should be selecting an oil-based moisturiser, so look for one that contains avocado or almond oil. These will lock the moisture in your skin and build a protective layer on the top surface. Water based moisturisers can be damaging to your skin, especially during cold climate, because the water freezes in your skin. Apply liberally whenever your skin feels dry. 2. Don’t forget your sunscreen Just because it’s cold out doesn’t mean the sun isn’t strong, especially when it can reflect off snow. Apply a SPF 1530 to your face (and hands if they’re exposed) about 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply if you’re spending the day outside. 3. Use a humidifier Heat can dry out more than just your sinuses. With added moisture in the air, your skin won’t be as flaky. 4. Avoid very hot water It may feel good, but you should never shower, bathe or wash your face with extremely hot water. It can not only break the capillaries in the face, but also break down the lipid barriers in the skin, which will lead to a loss of moisture. Adding a few drops of Jojoba or almond oil to a bath can nourish and hydrate dry skin.
6. Never ever lick your lips Stash soothing lip balms in your purse, car, and desk to keep lips from chapping. You can also apply few drops of olive oil mixed with few drops of honey to your lips for few minutes to hydrate. 7. Swap your liquid foundation for a cream formula Liquid foundation can actually freeze! One of the benefits of using cream is that it will give your skin an extra protective layer and help keep the moisture in your skin.

you in our Practice so please feel free to contact our friendly staff for any information on dental treatment you may require. Call Wendy or Hannah on Tel: 01379 652 580 to book your appointment.
8. Don’t ever leave the house with wet hair Have you ever had your hair freeze in the cold? This will cause damage to your scalp and hair can actually break off, so it may be better to shower in the evening. Since hair can get dry and damaged just like our skin, protect it by conditioning more in the winter and blow dry hair on a cooler setting. 9. Wear a hat to prevent a dry scalp Besides keeping you warm, a hat will hold in moisture and protect your scalp from dry air and flaking. Make sure your hat is not too tight and made of breathable material. 10. Give your hands extra love The skin on our hands is extremely thin, which means they already have a limited amount of moisture.
5. Hydrate skin while it’s damp Applying moisturiser immediately after taking a shower or washing your face will help lock-in moisture.
Apply moisturiser frequently, especially after washing your hands and avoid cotton gloves, which absorb moisture and stay wet.

Health, beauty & wellbeing Mick Glynn’s Health And Fitness Column New year’s health and fitness resolutions always fizzle out by March, they won’t this year if you set yourself a year-long plan, or change habbits long term to keep you on track. This month shrug off festive excess, and start on the road to achieving, and even surpassing your goals. Changing the what and when you eat could make a great difference to your energy levels that may help to improve your overall health. Everyone is talking about carbohydrates, good or bad? I was sceptical at first and worried that my energy would suffer as a result of cutting down on the carbohydrates, but quite the opposite. Like most people I don’t get home till late and after an active day my energy supply is on reserve.
It’s so easy at this stage to over load on pasta, rice or bread as a cheap easy filler, thinking that my energy would return, but quite the opposite happened.

Overloading on this food so late in the day left me bloated and sluggish the next morning.
Carbohydrates at breakfast, a combination of carbohydrates and protein at lunch and just protein with salad or vegetables at dinner.
If your like me and you enjoy feeling fresh and bright in the mornings then something had to change. A new eating philosophy was needed. I needed energy food (complex carbohydrates) but I needed it when I was on the move and active, and at the end of the day I certainly wasn’t active enough to justify a large plate of pasta

Detox After a no holds barred Christmas season you’ll no doubt have gained an extra few pounds. To get your body in optimum detox mode and stimulate your mind during those dark days and evenings, take regular exercise as often as you can. Cardiovascular fitness will keep your circulation working efficiently, meaning your blood can carry more essential oxygen to your cells, as well as delivering toxins and waste to the organs responsible for their elimination. Aim for thirty minutes every day and you’ll soon benefit from a healthier and slimmer physique. While you’re taking care of your body’s detox, remember that your mind too can benefit from some TLC. To combat stress or tension try regular yoga or meditation classes as first foot on the road to inner harmony. Not only will you feel mentally balanced, but the poses you’ll be performing in a yoga class will massage your internal organs and stimulate your natural detox into action. Meditation can be a great natural way to combat depression and anxiety, now such common demons of everyday life. Diet is a hugely important weapon in the war against accumulated internal waste. Toxin build up from food
additives, pesticides, processed foods, to name a few - can be attributed mainly to a poor diet. Eating fresh, organic and whole foods (think as close to their natural state as possible) will feed your body with the essential vitamins, minerals and enzymes it needs to keep you in tip top condition. During your detox period avoid red meats, dairy products, eggs and any refined and processed foods. Also cut out salt, sugar and all fizzy drinks. Think plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and whole grains to get your digestive system work Detox treatments are becoming increasingly common, from massage which stimulates the lymphatic system, to colonic hydrotherapy, which promises to clear and cleanse your large intestine and colon of years of accumulated waste. Treatments are a great complement to a detox diet, and regular relaxing sessions will pay dividends for both body and mind. This year, why not make yourself a resolution to be healthier and happier all year round.

CARING FOR THE ELDERLY From The Field To The Freezer How Wiltshire Farm Foods’ carefully prepared frozen meals are helping people stay independent. For those who’ve worked hard all their lives, maintaining independence is particularly important - especially when it comes to mealtimes. Wiltshire Farm Foods is one company that’s keen to help those who can’t get out and about as much, so they can eat well and look after themselves. Established for more than 20 years, Wiltshire Farm Foods creates and delivers a delicious range of frozen meals that can be cooked in minutes. From the field, to the freezer, every detail is considered in order to offer nutrition, value, flavour and awardwinning personal service. Ingredients are selected from carefully approved suppliers and are then prepared by a
team of nutritionists and award-winning chefs in their Wiltshire kitchens.
Most dishes take 8-12 minutes in the microwave or 35 minutes in the oven.
Once cooked, the meals are placed into handy trays that fit easily into the freezer, then frozen almost immediately to lock in the freshness.
As they are cooked in their trays, there is no preparation, no pots and pans, just delicious meals that you can enjoy in your own time.
Convenience is a key part of the Wiltshire Farm Foods offering. All meals can be ordered over the phone or online.
Maintaining independence has never been easier.
They’re then delivered by a friendly, local delivery driver, who is always happy to put meals away in the freezer if preferred. With the freezer stocked up, you know that a hot meal is only ever a few minutes away.

Norfolk-Based Richardson’s Buck The Trend A recent report that claims the UK Travel and Tourism industry is ‘neglecting’ the over 65s has been published, suggesting that a large proportion of senior executives ignore engaging with the older demographic. The survey, conducted by Barclays Corporate, found that 88% of senior executives claimed to be ‘highly engaged’ with the over 65s, yet 62% of businesses did not have any specific holidays catering for them. However, Norfolk-based company Richardson’s, whose holiday villages attract a huge number of older people, has spoken out against the industry’s bias towards younger holidaymakers. “It’s sad that the tourism industry seems to be ignoring the over 65s, but here at Richardson’s, we take great pride in the fact that over 50,000 people over 65 take their holidays with us each year,”
says Greg Munford, the Group Chief Executive of Richardson’s Group. “We have an over 70% return rate, and many people choose to holiday multiple times each year with Richardson’s. Our holiday villages and specialist entertainment breaks have always proven extremely popular with the older generation, and we include activities such as carpet bowls, ballroom dancing and sequence dancing. We’ve no intention of stopping making the over 65s feel as welcome as

possible.” Older people can also be put off taking a break due to circumstances that won’t have previously affected them - their age, and the travel insurance they need. Going abroad is made difficult for the over 65s as insurance companies begin to restrict their cover.
“As people continue to live longer and enjoy a healthier old age, we’ve tried to accommodate their needs, and provide relaxing holidays for the over 65s,” Greg continues.
“Being able to travel is a key way of staying active in later life,” says Danny Palmer, Insurance Manager of goodtogoinsurance.com.
“We’ve got over 50 years’ experience in providing great value for money holidays, and we don’t believe that having a fantastic holiday should be exclusively available to younger people.
“But some over 65s find it difficult to find an insurer that is willing to give them cover.
Many older people have told us how rejuvenated they feel after taking a break with us.
Today, older people are physically fitter and mentally younger than ever. As a result they are becoming more adventurous, with the time and money to travel abroad regularly.”
Plus, our older audience also take advantage of the off-peak times on our boating holidays, so Richardson’s really do provide great holidays for all age groups.”

Sat Nav Safety Tips to get the most out of your sat nav. 2. Trust your eyes not the sat nav People have been marooned in fords, driven into rivers and down railways because their sat nav told them to.
4. Don’t block your view of the road The sat nav should be in your line of sight. You don’t want to have to look down or turn your head a long way, but it should not block your view of the road.
If the road looks wrong, don’t take it. 1. You’re driving, not the sat nav You can’t blame the sat nav if you commit an offence or have an accident. It’s your fault.
3. Watch the road not the sat nav A sat nav can give all sorts of information about where you are going, much of which you don’t need.
5. Use all of the features On a complicated, busy roundabout, it is unwise to take your eyes off the road to look at the sat nav, and much better to receive spoken instructions.
6. Update the sat nav regularly It needs to know about new roads, new traffic systems and generally keep itself up to date. 7. Thieves like sat navs too If it’s detachable, always take it out when you leave the car. Mounts or suction cap marks also attract thieves as they know that drivers who remove the sat nav from the window tend to leave it in the car.
