Hoxne Phoenix Group There was a good attendance at the March meeting to hear Mr Bob Spray and his colleague, Dawn Watson describing the work of the Seasearch Marine Recorders in their diving explorations off our coast in the North Sea. Contrary to the general opinion that the East Coast. “being flat it has no interesting sea-life areas” Mr Fray and his group maintain that the animal life off our shores is prolific, exciting and thriving. His main working area is between Cley and Trimingham and he demonstrated with some beautiful slides the variety and abundance of sea animals including edible fish, crustaceans and many types of nudibranch (sea slugs) off this part of the coast, some of which are rarities possibly the effect of climate change. Mr. Spray and Dawn were warmly thanked for a very erudite presentation. Perhaps we should all try and learn a bit more about this fascinating area of marine science before it is too late. After refreshments Mrs Bradford said she

The annual lunch will take place at The Swan Harleston on March 20th at 12.30pm for 1.00pm. On the 18th April we visit the Pennoyers Centre in Pulham St Mary with a talk at 11.00am. Lunch is available. On 3rd May there is a coach trip to Ely for Market Day and a exploration of the City, Cathedral and shopping, cost £10.50. Our June meeting is confined to ladies only for a “Belly Dancing “session. Also in June is the Hoxne Music Festival with many lively events. A number of our monthly meetings are open to any

Diss W.I. Well our yearly subs are in and once again we have a great membership. We have already had some new members joining our group which is fantastic. This month we had the very interesting Chris Bell from Weatherquest, talking to us on” Chasing Tornado’s.” Chris had actually done this, and it was truly a fascinating subject. Our ladies were enthralled and could have listened to him all night. Sadly we had other business to attend to.!! We are organising a trip to “Yesterday’s World “in Great Yarmouth in May and the preparations
and exhibits are coming along nicely for the Area Exhibition in Pulham in April. The competition photo’s were lovely and it made it very hard for Chris to choose a winner, however Glenys Shawcross won and there were 2 worthy runners up. Our meeting ended a little late, as there was a definate air of frivolity in the room.!!! We have the very musical Frances Hart next month. New members are always welcome.

Whilst this issue of Dispatch Magazine is devoted to celebrating the Queen, we are also delighted to be celebrating with Oliver Pilsbury-Gaunt, an 18-year-old from Diss, who has just been crowned this year’s Diss Carnival King. Oliver is a Student at City College in Norwich, where he is completing a ICT diploma. He also runs the Park Pavillion Kiosk and is therefore already well know in Diss. Oliver stated “I want to make a difference in the town and meet lots of new people I haven’t met before, it will be nice for people to say there is a face we know and I’m really looking forward to it.” As well as running his business and attending college, Oliver is also involved in a few organisations and committees in the town, and will be joining the Diss Rotary Club in May. He is also the brains and the leading force behind the Diss Jubilee Celebrations, having formed the committee, arranged the majority of the activities and spearheaded the event

Diss Museum Diss has done well in the last 10 years out of commemorating its famous people. The John Skelton and Thomas Paine festivals won awards, while those for Betjeman and the Mannings celebrated heritage and boosted the local economy. Even Ethel Le Neve, mistress of wifemurderer Crippen, had a mini-festival devoted to her two years ago, on the centenary of the crime. Twice recently I have reviewed the Morley Consort of Voices, past and present UEA students under Peter Aston’s direction, when they came to sing in Diss church. Listening to their late 16th and early 17th music I began to ponder a John Wilbye festival. The first problem would be selling the idea of madrigals to the public. Secondly, very little is known about Wilbye, so there would be no central character. Skelton, the priestly ladies’ man, and Paine, who fought in the American army, gave lots of scope. We knew where Skelton lived and Paine worked. We had examples of their writing and books about their lives. Some said that we should not have commemorated the “thoroughly scurrilous” Skelton or the “traitorous” Paine. A bit of opposition always helps.
Dispatch May 2012
Of Wilbye, we know that he was born in Diss, or at least Brome, in 1574, the son of a tanner, according to some accounts, or a prosperous landowner. He never married, composed many love-lorn madrigals and spent much of his life as resident musician at Hengrave Hall. I am sure the Morley Consort would take part; but they would have the usual two dozen middle-aged and elderly people in the audience. We could have music workshops in schools, something that always helps to obtain funding. There could be food events, literature, poetry, drama (it was the age of Shakespeare), art and textiles, reenactments and an Elizabethan fair. Maybe it would be better to pitch it as Diss 1600, rather than just John Wilbye. Then there are the years of work, the endless funding applications, constantly promoting things that most people don’t want, ending often with much of the expense and the blame if anything goes wrong. I’ll think about it. Basil Abbott
Diss Decorative & Fine Arts Society Matisse and Picasso - Half a Century of Friendly Rivalry. More than 120 members and guests were drawn to Diss Decorative & Fine Arts Society’s [DDFAS] March lecture on Matisse and Picasso given by Frank Woodgate, lecturer at Dulwich Picture Gallery and guide for Tate Britain and Tate Modern. Henri Matisse started his working life as a law student before changing to art and was 12 years older than Pablo Picasso although both were art students in 1890’s. Matisse in Paris and Picasso in Madrid. Both had traditional training although Matisse - usually in Jacket and tie - was less Bohemian than Picasso. Henri wrote about his work but kept his life private whereas Pablo didn’t write about his art but wanted everyone to know about his private life. Frank Woodgate quoted of Picasso that he was “a serial monogamist with considerable overlapping” Over more than half a century they developed different and innovative styles, invented art movements and were usually seen as in rivalry. Taking ideas from each other they became, over time, good friends and each acknowledged
the other and were influenced by what the other had done. Frank was able to illustrate this lavishly by direct comparison - side by side - of key works from the beginning of the 20th century through to the 1960’s for both lived into their eighties. Each artwork was explained by Frank Woodgate whose extensive knowledge and flowing style gave full provenance and context. Matisse once said, “Picasso sees everything” and Picasso commented “ All things considered, there is only Matisse”. They are both credited with saying, “We must talk to each other as much as we can. When one of us dies, there will be some things that the other will never be able to talk of to anyone else” The next lecture will be at Royden Village Hall at 1.30pm on Tuesday 15th May 2012 - Petra - The Rose Red City with Geoffrey Toms of the Museum of London. As always, potential members are very welcome to come and experience the quality of the events for themselves.

Comercrawley The personal injury lawyers. Your questions answered…… Question: Is it true that an insurance company can video someone pursuing a claim for compensation? Answer: Yes, in some cases an insurance company may instruct an enquiry agent to obtain video evidence of a Claimant pursuing a compensation claim. The surveillance evidence is usually obtained in a covert way, with the aim being to see if the Claimant’s injuries and losses are consistent with that claimed. Sometimes the evidence may be obtained on the same day that the Claimant sees a medical expert so that a comparison can be made between the symptoms described to the expert and that shown on the footage (for example, the video may show the Claimant walking unaided to the appointment but using a walking stick at the appointment). The surveillance can also be done over a number of days. This may result in footage which shows the Claimant’s mobility to be significantly different to that claimed however in some cases it may simply show the Claimant on

a ‘good day’ with the enquiry agent having chosen not to video the Claimant on a ‘bad day’. If an insurance company wishes to rely upon video surveillance evidence that they have obtained they should disclose it early on in the proceedings. In considering whether to allow the insurance company permission to rely upon the evidence, the court will seek to balance two competing rights under the Human Rights Act 1998; the Claimant’s right to privacy under Article 8 and the Defendant’s right to ensure that there is a fair trial under Article 6. The court will also consider the overriding objective under the rules governing civil proceedings which is to enable cases to be dealt with justly. Stacey & Partners Are you buying and selling on the Internet? Be warned, you may need to tell the Inland Revenue! So says Mark Wallace of the Accountancy Firm, Stacey & Partners. Some people have fallen had to pay interest, fines an penalties on income not declared to the Inland Revenue, and HMRC are launching a campaign to allow people to come forward, and come clean for a limited period. If you are buying and selling on the Internet and it is not done with the aim of making a profit, then there is no need to inform HM Revenue & Customs. Whereas, if trading is done on a regular basis, with a view to making a profit, there is the potential to pay tax.
Store opening times are as follows: Sawmills Road:
HM Revenue & Customs have had a number of campaigns, under which they are targeting particular areas of tax evasion, and the latest area to be targeted is that of e-markets.
Monday: Friday 9am-5pm Saturday: 9am - 4pm, Sunday: 10am -4pm.
The scheme is aimed at online traders who have not previously disclosed their profits.
Under the opportunity, traders can come forward at any point between 4th March and 14th June and inform HM Revenue & Customs that they want to take part. They will then have until 14th September to give details of tax owed and arrange payment, including any interest and penalties. In doing so, it is likely that some tax payers will be able to avoid any penalties at all and are most likely to be liable to a penalty of no more than 10% of the tax owed. After that date, if HM Revenue & Customs discover e-market traders who have not disclosed, the penalties could amount to up to 100% of the tax owed. Mark Wallace of Stacey & Partners are able to advise on this area further and can be contacted on 01824 826100 or via email at thet@staceys.co.uk.

Seeing The Way Forward The past few years have seen some major advances in medical diagnostic technology and this includes eye disease. Optometrist – Ed Adkins outlines some of these latest developments and explains their significance to maintaining the health of your eyes. Two of the most common causes of visual loss in the western world are Agerelated Macular Degeneration (AMD) and Glaucoma. These conditions are expected to become increasingly common, due to factors such as an ageing population and unhealthy lifestyle.
behind the retina. These drusen distort the retina and reduce its ability to detect light, causing loss of vision. Dry AMD tends to progress slowly and isn’t currently treatable, although there are some studies that indicate a healthy diet and some supplements can help reduce the effects of dry AMD. Above: OCT image revealing a retina with wet AMD.
OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) is the latest technique for the imaging of the internal structures of the eye. The technology is best likened to a 3D MRI scanner for the eyes. This allows us to actually see below the surface of the retina and view the microscopic layers beneath. It is currently commonly used in Hospital Eye Departments for the diagnosis and management of many common eye conditions. However, only a minority of Optometric practices are able to offer the benefits of OCT to their patients. The process is very quick and totally painless, without any bright flashes. Scans can normally be performed without the need for dilating drops. Therefore, this service is ideal for those driving to their appointment. The primary use of an OCT is currently in detecting and managing retinal conditions such as AMD. There are 2 forms of macular degeneration - dry & wet. The macula is the central portion of retina, which we rely on for sharp vision such as reading. The dry form results from a build-up of waste products (called drusen)
Above: Retinal photograph showing inside a healthy eye.
OCT is also useful for in screening for and monitoring glaucoma. Glaucoma is a progressive condition where damage to the optic nerve head causes loss of nerve fibres and a slow loss to the field of vision. Left unchecked, this can eventually lead to blindness.
The OCT measures retinal thickness in key areas of the eye, which are susceptible to damage from glaucoma. By comparing these findings to databases of known normal individuals and by detecting subtle changes to these areas over time, OCT can give us an early warning of glaucoma. The aim is to detect potential glaucoma before any damage to vision. Conventional eye examinations normally detect this condition at a later stage, by which time irreversible visual loss may have already occurred.
Above: OCT Glaucoma Optic Nerve Analysis.
Above: Retinal photograph showing scattered drusen deposits in dry AMD.
Above: OCT image showing dry AMD changes with distortion due to drusen.
So, along with regular, comprehensive eye exams, those with risk factors of AMD and Glaucoma such as family history can now get some extra peace of mind by having their eyes scanned with an OCT.
Sometimes dry AMD can progress into the other form – wet AMD. New blood vessels grow behind the retina, which can break through and leak causing a sudden and significant loss of central vision. Wet AMD is now treatable, if detected promptly. This is where OCT comes into play. OCT makes it possible to view the layers behind the retina, where wet AMD changes occur. This in turn makes it possible to differentiate between dry AMD, which needs monitoring and early wet AMD, which requires prompt referral and treatment.

Attleborough & District Horticultural Society At the March meeting of the society the speaker turned out to be our Chairman Peter Wenham, who stepped into the breech when our designated speaker didn’t turn up. Nevertheless with very little time to prepare he was able to put together a fascinating presentation on Kew Gardens. It was news to many of us that he at one time used to work at Kew, and aided by many photos (suitably transcribed onto Powerpoint) he was able to show us how Kew never stops evolving, for example in the range and design of glasshouses. Many thanks to Peter for an excellent talk. The table show was dominated by John Phoenix, who collected three awards: for “one large cup daffodil - division 2”, “one other daffodil”
and a “container of flowering bulbs, corms or tubers”. David Harris was best with his “three stems of flowers” while Ron Brewer took first place with his “any other vegetable”. The next meeting will be on May 16th, at which Howard Norton will be giving an illustrated talk on Delphiniums, and as usual non-members are very welcome to come along and enjoy the talk. Barnham Common Spruced Up For Spring Barnham Common has been spruced up for spring. Local garden and ground maintenance company Roots and Routes, undertook the extensive winter clearance programme on the common on behalf of Breckland District Council to help preserve it as a prime example of ancient breck land. The common, which stretches from Barnham to the outskirts of Thetford, is located within an area of ‘Special Site of Scientific Interest’ and is a listed nature reserve. As such Barnham Common is a favourite destination of walkers and nature enthusiasts. The quieter winter period, therefore offers an ideal opportunity to carry out necessary work, with the minimum disruption to both visitors and the wildlife that call the common home. Traditionally an area of classic breck land, featuring large expanses of grass and gorse and very few trees, Barnham Common is famous for its unusual array
of flora and fauna, work was required to scale back the advance of nonindigenous plant life. Breckland District Council recognised this and commissioned garden and grounds maintenance company Roots and Routes to undertake a conservation cut, including coppicing 275 oak trees, to open the area up and return it to its former glory. “We were delighted to be offered the chance to carry out this felling contract for Breckland District Council on Barnham Common. The common is a beautiful and typical part of breck land and we are proud to have played a part in its upkeep” said Roots and Routes Director Iain Hyson. “Winter is the ideal time of year to tidy up gardens and prepare the ground for spring planting and turfing. Spring is a key time for flora and fauna and, because the sap isn’t currently
rising, now is the time to ensure that conditions are optimised. Now is also the time to lay turf, to allow it time to bed deep roots ahead of the drier summer season” Iain explained, adding “this is a beautiful part of the world and I’d encourage everybody to go along and look at the work that has been done to preserve and enhance the environment and really enjoy this gorgeous part of Thetford”. Roots and Routes is based in Thetford, and was established in 2003 by Iain, using just a van and £200 of second-hand tools. Roots and Routes now employs seven full-time staff and specialise in all aspects of ground maintenance from assisting in individual gardens, through to commercial properties, fulllandscaping and car park maintenance, including tree surgery, litter picking, site clearance, pressure washing and painting.

Can We Help?
It is NOT “just a cake”.
The Chancellor said in his last budget speech “The country borrowed its way into trouble. Now we’re going to earn our way out”.
A phrase sometimes heard by home cake decorators when providing a quote is “How much? It’s just a cake!” You say that you can get a cake for under a tenner in a supermarket. Yes, that’s true. But supermarkets do things in bulk. They pay a pittance for their ingredients and make the cakes on a conveyor belt. You will not get a “WOW” cake from a supermarket. And they won’t taste nowhere near as good as a homemade cake. So, just for those who don’t know, here are a few things to consider when ordering from a home decorator. We do not have the space to buy bulk and we use only the best ingredients. We have to cover the costs of ingredients, sundries, such as boards, boxes & ribbons, gas & electricity, insurance, website, phone, wear and tear on equipment, advertising, and stationery.
And then there’s our time, from research to the time it takes for baking, carving & filling the cake and the hours it takes to decorate it. We do not quote for all our time, which means we get paid much less than the minimum wage. I hope I have given you a better understanding of what we do and what is required behind the scenes and how much we invest into creating tasty and great looking cakes for you. There’s a lot more costs involved than one thinks. And our prices are worthy of our hard work, time, effort and skills put into your unique cake, and it is this that you are paying for...not just for the ingredients! If you want to pay less than a tenner for a cake, then by all means, get it from the supermarket. But if you want a centre piece and talking point for your celebration, then get one from a home cake decorator.
This may be the case but there are several people that are very disgruntled over some of the announcements and the proposed changes that are seen as a ‘Granny Tax’. Personal tax allowances for 2012/2013 are increasing each year and for those under 65 this will be increased by £630 to £8105. The basic rate tax band is currently 20% and the band at this rate is being reduced to £34,370. From 2013/14 the higher age related personal allowances will not be increased and their availability will be restricted to people born on or before 5th April 1948 for the £10,500 allowance. Freezing this allowance and restricting it to people born before 5th April 1948 is being seen as a tax on the elderly. Unless the Chancellor has a change of heart and when the budget changes become law many people may feel they are losing out. We would encourage all clients to plan their finances, for all clients to make use of all their tax allowances and for clients to maximise
the return they receive on their savings. This is where we look at assisting all our clients, whatever age they are. There are still investment products available that have the potential to produce good returns, some of which produce additional income. We look to assist clients and make the best use of the capital they have. So if you need help or if the budget will have a negative impact on you, please speak to us to see how we can help. 1. Make sure your business is in the right structure for you. This could be a sole trader, a partnership, an LLP or a limited company. There are numerous factors to consider, not just tax, and you will need to look at your own personal situation and objectives. If you get this right you can choose how much tax to pay! Once you have got the structure right you will need to consider how you extract income from the business and some expert advice in this area is a must. 2. The second crucial issue for you to take on board and that is tax planning must be done in advance! Once a transaction has taken place, albeit the completion of a large, profitable contract or the sale on an asset or business, then

often there is little that can be done to mitigate the tax. My advice is always keep your accountant “in the loupe” so you can get the advice you need. Do not wait until your “annual” meeting to discuss important issues. Send copies of your monthly management information to your accountant for review. At Howard & Company we actively encourage our clients can contact us as often as they like. They can do this without worrying about additional costs because we prefer to work on fixed fees! 3. The third one is simple...just don’t take tax advice from the guy down the pub! His tax saving ideas are most likely to be a tax evasion, which is illegal, rather than tax avoidance which is legal! Seek professional advice and then you can sleep at night. There are so many legal ways to avoid tax that you don’t need to go down the other road. If anyone would like further help on saving tax then please get in touch. Kerry Butcher Have you received your P60 yet from your job or if you were lucky enough to get some interest on your savings, have you received a certificate telling you how much you received and if you paid any tax? If you have received either of these or both AND you have also been asked to complete a tax return - it’s probably best to get this sorted now. If you are anything like me, I put things in a “safe place” never to be seen again. But if you have been asked to complete a tax return, or you think you ought to - you will need this information to hand, not in that safe place that you can’t remember! Another good reason to complete your tax return early is that tax credit claims have to be estimated until you know what your final earnings are and usually this means that the figures are taken from the calculation on your tax return. Why not come and have a chat and get any tax returns sorted early,
who knows you may be lucky enough to receive a refund. If you are an employer and cringed when I said the words P60, don’t worry, you have until 19th May 2012 to get your P35 annual return to HMRC but if you would like a hand with this or any other payroll then we can help and it will probably cost a lot less than you think. So why not spend this month enjoying the weather and relaxing, don’t get caught up in paperwork. Go and enjoy yourself and call 01953 457173 or email: Kerry@kerry butcher.co.uk for that first free meeting instead.

The biggest impact on patio gardens has undoubtedly been decking which is an easy to maintain area that provides an ideal surface for summer as the wood is near cold but at the same time never becomes excessively hot like some natural stone and manmade paving products. Homes & Gardens Lawn And Garden Care With Tiffey Valley Garden Services. As Spring begins to move into Summer, May is an important month for your garden.
When it comes to mowing the lawn, it’s safe enough to lower your mower blade cut by cut and you need to start
increasing the frequency of your mowing.

Running along the edge of your lawn with a half moon spade can really smarten the appearance of your lawn too. May is also the best month to apply your chosen weedkiller and/or feed. Be sure to apply on a still day to minimise spread onto your beds. Remember to water in well if it doesn’t rain within a couple of days (but not with your hosepipe!) If you haven’t already, then think about aerating your lawn to get as much oxygen and water to the grass root. A regular lawn maintenance plan is the best way to ensure your own green space will be looking its best by mid-summer. Tiffey Valley Garden Services can offer regular garden maintenance or help you out with a one off garden tidy. Social Media Twitter & What Is It All About As Twitter continues to be considered one of the most popular social media platforms available on the web, it becomes increasingly important to understand the usage of Twitter. Twitter started back in 2006 and was setup as a way of sending SMS type messages to groups of people. It is sometimes termed as Micro Blogging as the length of message is limited to just 140 characterís and allows people to send a ‘Tweet’ quickly about what they are up to, whereas a BLOG takes time to compose, compile and review. A ‘Tweet’ is a message sent by ‘Twitter’ and is defined as a short burst of information. The Twitter technology is fully integrated into
mobile phone technology and even the most basic phones can send an SMS message to a Twitter phone number that will post the update on your Twitter channel / stream. New Smart phones have fully integrated Twitter clients that allow both posting of new updates as well as browsing tweets from your connected followers. Like other social networking technologies it allows you to be part of a massive network, where you follow people you are interested in and people that are interested in you follow you. But unlike Facebook, where what you post is private and shared only with your preffered

it down into a few characters that doesn’t monopolise the 140 characters of your message. Retweeting is where you read a ‘Tweet’ posted by someone you are following and find it so interesting that you forward the message on to the people that are following you. It is very easy to search for People or Groups that you would like to follow on ‘Twitter’ by just typing in the name of the individual or group name and follow.

Social Media Hashtags / strings prefixed by # are ways that people tag things for trending i.e. You might post a ‘Tweet’ all about Dispatch Magazine and place at # before the word Dispatch, so it looks like: #DispatchMagazine. This is tracked and trended throughout the ‘Twitter’ message world. Using Hashtags and having your ‘Tweets’ showing on your website (we can set this up for you) is a great way to help your website rank up the Google pages, as the Hashtags are seen as links and Google loves links! In September 2011 Twitter hit 100 million global active users who between them send a staggering 230m tweets a day and half the active user base accesses Twitter daily. Twitter’s website alone records 400 million monthly unique browsers, up 70% from the start of 2011, while 55% of active users are on mobile.

Tips When Using Twitter Keep it simple: Pick a Twitter name that is easy to find and remember (and that doesn’t take up too much of the 140-character limit you will have to make comments). It’s great if you can use your company’s name, but if you have to shorten it, pick something simple. So, for example, “Dispatch Magazine” becomes @Dispatch_Mag on Twitter. You can use your profile description to communicate the full name of your company (it will come up when someone looks at your profile). Use the description wisely to say what you want to say the most.
Share: Don’t forget to follow your employees, so that you can retweet them or mention them when they are talking bout things that relate to your business. It will make your company seem more human.
Listen: What you say is what you are. Take time to “listen” to other businesses like yours before you dive into making your own comments. Also be sure to look at the hashtags they are using, because you might want to use them, too.
Interact, don’t just broadcast: The best way to come to the attention of others is to participate in conversations they are having, if they are relevant. That means retweeting their comments, reply to things they might be saying about your business, or answering questions.
Establish frequency: There is no hard and fast rule about how often you should send out tweets. Some businesses schedule or time messages to go out over a period of time. Others only send out messages occasionally. The more frequently you tweet, the more likely you are to build a network of followers.
Be relevant and interesting: This is my favorite part of the Twitter guide, because it cannot be understated. The more you are willing to share with your followers, the more engaged they will become. I can say from experience that this is true. Sending photos (maybe of a new shop?) will inspire retweets and comments, as will relevant links to thought-provoking news articles and videos. Twitter is a great place to ask questions, because questions will almost immediately engage the reader. Offers and discounts are also likely to be passed along, which can help increase your Twitter following. Promote your Twitter identity in the real world. Include your Twitter Name on business cards, advertisements and even on your Website.

Crafters Celebrate Diamond Anniversary
Sparkle & Flair
The Norfolk Craft Guild holds its 60th Anniversary Spring Exhibition at National Trust property, Blickling Hall, from May 23rd - June 3rd.
These are just a few of the regular comments we get every week.
Their two week-long exhibition offers a unique opportunity to see and purchase some of the members’ inspiring high quality craftsmanship. Founded in 1952, the Guild was specifically created to look after the interests of full-time craft workers in Norfolk. These included Thatcher’s, blacksmiths, weavers and potters. The existing fortystrong group includes contemporary and traditional crafters and artists. These days, their aim is to promote a well informed interest in Art and Crafts.
• Beautiful beads in a wealth of colours
Chairman, Mr Peter Kingsland, has been a member of the Guild for over 20 years. His skills include wood-turning and making traditional wooden toys, to modern day safety standards. Mr Kingsland said: “As we celebrate our 60th year, we are keen to maintain the high standards of craftsmanship the Guild was created to support.” Any new members are assessed and selected by full committee agreement. “Their work must be unique and
traditionally made; we do not accept work which is simply assembled.” Blacksmith, Eric Stevenson, was one of the Guild’s most renowned founder members. His work can be seen locally at Westwood Gate, St Peter Mancroft Church in Norwich. Today, members include kiln-formed glass maker, Hazel Millington, who creates distinctive glass art and jewellery. Her work is inspired by a visit to the west coast of America. A number of members, like Pewter Embosser Hazel Aldridge, hold workshops or give lecturers about their craft. These are to promote and encourage their skills to others, so they are not lost to future generations. The admission-free Spring Exhibition will be open 10:30am to 5:00pm daily in the Hobart Gallery, Blickling Hall from 23rd of May to 3rd of June. For more details about the Guild: www.norfolkcraftguild.com Or www.facebook.com/TheNorfolkCraftGuild.

For those who’ve worked hard all their lives, maintaining independence is particularly important - especially when it comes to mealtimes. Wiltshire Farm Foods is one company that’s keen to help those who can’t get out and about as much, so they can eat well and look after themselves. Established for more than 20 years, Wiltshire Farm Foods creates and delivers a delicious range of frozen meals that can be cooked in minutes. From the field, to the freezer, every detail is considered in order to offer nutrition, value, flavour and awardwinning personal service. Older Person’s Forum Chair Appointed
NBR Scooter Brokers
Shirley Matthews from Swaffham has been appointed as the first Chairman of the newly formed Breckland Older Person’s Forum.
Their main objective is to provide impartial advice together with a friendly and efficient service!! They offer the service of a free, no obligation, home demonstration for all of their products to ensure they are suitable for your needs.
The Forum’s inaugural Annual General Meeting, held at the EcoTech Centre on 27 March, attracted a good attendance from across the district. There was plenty of enthusiasm amongst those attending to take an active role in the work of the new Forum; Christine Goddard from Well Family Swaffham was appointed as Vice Chairman and another eight volunteers stepped forward to offer their services on the new Committee. Roles and responsibilities within the committee will be determined later this month. Newly appointed Chairman Shirley Matthews said: “With an ageing population, it is increasingly important that the views of older people are represented both locally and nationally. Forums such as ours can harness the knowledge and experience of older residents and use these to help shape the services that every one of us will need at some point in our lives. I am delighted that so many people have demonstrated their
commitment and put themselves forward to take an active part in the new Forum” Speakers at the AGM included Rik Martin from the Norfolk Rural Community Council who spoke about the benefits of rural bulk buying fuel schemes, and Marian Morse of the Citizens’ Advice Bureau who gave practical advice on saving energy and reducing costs. The next Forum meeting is scheduled for July and the date will be published on the Breckland Council website nearer the time. The Breckland Older Person’s Forum is an independent body; Breckland Council assisted with its initial formation and will continue to support the organisation through the provision of meeting space.

Car Review
Fiat 500 1.3 MultiJet Lounge By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Writer www.carwriteups.co.uk Twitter: @carwriteups WHAT A cute car. The Fiat 500 is funky, fashionable and nimble. In fact it’s the perfect motor for nipping around town in and, with a decent turbo diesel under the bonnet, it’s just as good on longer motorway trips. I did feel slightly annoyed when I first climbed into the Fiat and slammed my left knee against the centre console, but I’m a 6ft tall chap and it’s a small car.
pain once I started her up. The diminutive Italian car’s 1.3 16v MultiJet engine packs a punch. It takes the 500 from a standing start rapidly - if you want it to - and makes cruising at 70 mph a pleasure.
What did I expect? Well, I didn’t anticipate it to be so lush inside that’s for sure.
Mated to this engine, the Fiat is also seriously economical. It features a Stop and Start system, which further reduces fuel consumption by switching the engine off when you’re stationary and not in gear - helping to give a mega-mpg of up to 72.4.
The white leather steering wheel, comfortable seats, and body coloured dash trim soon made me forget about my aching knee. In fact I completely forgave the Fiat 500 for causing me
The ride can be a little too firm over bumpy road surfaces and this causes handling to become slightly jittery, but other than that the Fiat 500 does a great job.
It’s actually more practical than I thought it would be too. The boot managed to take the family shopping, and my wife and two little children sat quite happily as my passengers when we went on a few school and nursery runs together.

PROS ‘N’ CONS
Reassuringly, the Fiat has a maximum 5-star rating in the gruelling Euro NCAP crash test safety programme.
• Fashionable √
When it achieved this, it was the first time that a car of such compact dimensions, (3.5 metres in length), had achieved a top rating, and astonishing that a vehicle of its type had been equipped with seven airbags as standard.
• Equipment levels √
In fact, the Fiat 500 offers general levels of equipment more usually associated with cars of a far higher segment, with ABS anti-lock braking, remote central locking, electric front windows and door mirrors, an MP3compatible CD player and electric power steering. In Lounge spec, on test here, the car also has mobile phone connectivity, air conditioning, 15 inch alloy wheels, exterior chrome trim, a glass roof and a very useful 50:50 split/folding rear seat with head restraints.
