Diss Museum Airships are largely remembered for disasters; but, in their day, they ruled the skies. The R34 was the length of two football pitches and over 90 feet high. It was the first to achieve the double Atlantic crossing, coming back to Pulham in 1919. In 2019 there will be centenary celebrations that are already being planned. Diss Museum, Pulham Pennoyer Centre, the National Museum of Flight in Scotland, the Cradle of Aviation Museum on Long Island and others have all shown interest in a commemoration. One idea from Scotland was that each venue should create an outline to show just how massive an airship was. Pulham had the idea, as part of the current Norfolk’s American Connections project, of re-creating the banquet given for the crew when they landed. I attended in role as General Maitland whose log of the voyage is the main
source of information. Having obtained American newspapers I know that a version of the log appeared in the New York Times the day after they arrived on Long Island.
picture cutting signed by some of the crew, a printer’s stamp of the airship, adverts by firms who supplied R34; and cuttings supplied by the New York Public Library.
So that was obviously arranged in advance and probably earned him a tidy sum.

There are plans for a mutual educational project between the schools in East Lothian, Long Island and South Norfolk. Composer Peter Creswell has expressed interest in creating a musical work based on the voyage. As in previous museum projects there are opportunities for drama, art & textile exhibitions, booklets, CDs, talks, tours. It would be wonderful to bring airships back to Pulham, for even a day, as there are some still flying, although not the leviathans they used to be. Meanwhile I am collecting R34 memorabilia pictures, postcards, first day covers, a

Saturday, 17th November, 9-1pm at Diss United Reformed Church, Mere Street.
Wednesday 3rd October saw a day of celebration at Steeles Law’s Mount Street based offices in Diss, with staff Karen Bacon and Janet Calver celebrating 30 and 41 years of working for the firm respectively. Karen is head of Steeles Law’s wills and probate team and also has a particular specialism working with local agricultural clients. Janet is the office’s team assistant, providing administrative support to legal staff and welcoming clients and visitors to reception.
Commenting on these fantastic long service achievements, Managing Principal Stephen Drake commented: “The firm would like to offer our warmest congratulations to both Karen and Janet on this milestone, which seems an increasingly rare achievement in today’s business world. We would also like to thank them for their hard work and dedication to Steeles Law throughout the years.” Karen and Janet marked the special occasion with lunch at Il Divo restaurant with colleagues past and present.

Next May, Redgrave Church Heritage Trust, supported by The Mere Players, will be staging a production of Jesus Christ Superstar! in the beautiful, historic surroundings of Redgrave Church. Whilst Andrew Lloyd Webber had the luxury of a national TV show to seek out the singers required for this exciting and ambitious show, RCHT and Mere Players are hoping to find a pool of more local talent capable of reaching those high notes. Open Auditions will
be held in January next year, but for all those aching to strut their stuff in this inspirational Rock Musical and itching to know more, there will be a presentation at Diss Junior School Hall at 2pm on Sunday November 25th where the director, Felicity Humfress, and the Musical Director, Keith O’Gorman, will outline what will be required of potential auditionees and their plans for what promises to be a unique and memorable event. Diss U3A The guest speaker at the October meeting was David Berwick who gave a most interesting and informative talk entitled ‘Beating the Bounds’. Undertaken every three years this ritual procession dates back many hundreds of years and would involve members of the parish, the clergy and local officials walking with sticks to beat and define the parish boundary. At times the progress was sometimes impeded but never defeated by obstacles such as hedges, ponds and buildings, all needing to be travelled through to establish the boundary. The relevance of knowing to which parish one belonged was an important factor for those in the 17th Century and beyond affecting as it could the right to be baptised, married, obtain poor relief and be buried in the churchyard, depending upon which parish you belonged to. In order to determine the boundary lead plates were affixed to buildings denoting the parish boundary and the year, the position of these marker plates were closely contested and often set side by side only inches apart.
Norwich is fortunate that many of these markers, not to be confused with fire plates, still exist on many of the old buildings throughout the city. One of the best examples is a group of five dating from 1710 to 1854 which can be found on the wall of The Coach and Horses in Bethel Street. David Berwick illustrated his talk with photographs he had taken whilst researching the subject for a book highlighting these fascinating pieces of social history the significance of which is probably never appreciated by those of us who pass them by on a daily basis. For further information on Diss U3A please visit the website or telephone 01379 642674. The next meeting will take place on 1st November at Diss United Reformed Church at 10.30am.

the Arts & Crafts movement, influenced Impressionism and framed Art Nouveau.
Frank had stepped in at the last minute to replace his wife, Valerie, a very well known expert on PreRaphaelite paintings who had lost her voice. Frank, a previous and popular DDFAS presenter, is equally knowledgeable and had helped to put together the current Exhibition at the Tate on this important art movement of the Victorian Avant-Garde.
Many members will be booking their tickets for the Pre-Raphaelites - Victorian Avant-Garde at the Tate Britain and which runs until 13th January 2013. As a complete contrast, the November lecture is the History of the Long Case Clock presented by Colin Lattimore.
The wonderfully illustrated lecture was a potted history of the movement and trailer for the comprehensive exhibition. Frank was able to go through the history and scope of the PreRaphaelites as it unfolds, room by room, at Tate Britain. From the origins and manifesto of the Brotherhood in 1848 to the key themes and scope of the artists, we enjoyed the works and thoughts of John Millais, William Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti - and their disciples, such as Ford Maddox-Brown and John Ruskin, through four decades of stunning changes in British art. This led to

Stradbrook & District Royal British Legion On the 1st December 2012, we plan to hold a ‘Christmas Gift Concert for Military Wives’. i.e. we envisage a very low admission price (enough to cover our costs), and will request the audience to bring a wrapped Christmas Gift for a military wife, to place in our sleigh, for the branch to send to Wattisham base on behalf of the community. This token of appreciation will hopefully link community to forces, and let the wives know that they are valued, especially those whose husbands are away on deployment over Christmas.
will be quite early (possibily late matinee) as public seem reluctant to turn out on winter evenings in rural areas. Gislingham Silver band also believe in the cause and have given us a generous discounted price for the occasion. Festive music will be interspersed with readings and poems chosen carefully, which are relevant to the wives situation. (Father Christmas may show up)
This whole idea has been embraced by Wattisham base, who have offered to send representatives and a few wives along to the concert.
20th April 2013, We plan to hold a repeat concert at the High School, similar to the Queens Birthday Concert held in April 2012, but this time our theme will be, England and St. George.
Details are still to be finalised, but I imagine the start time
Ipswich Hospital band will play once again on this night.

comercrawley The personal injury lawyers. Your questions answered…… Question: Is there any legal duty to help someone who needs rescuing and could you be sued if you do attempt to help but fail to rescue them? Answer: Whilst many may consider that there is a moral obligation to act in such a situation, there is however no duty in English law to attempt to rescue someone who has got into difficulties or who is in danger. Similarly, there is no legal duty for a member of the public to provide first aid assistance to someone who is in need of it. Therefore the fact that someone has not attempted a rescue or to provide first aid will not expose them to legal liability. If a person does step in to rescue someone, they then owe a duty of care to the person being rescued. There would be no breach of that duty by the mere fact that the member of the public was unable to rescue the
person in need of help. For example, if a member of the public jumped into a river to help someone who had fallen in, they would not be negligent simply because they were unable to prevent that person from drowning or if they were able to rescue them to the riverside but their attempt at first aid was unsuccessful. If however the rescuer fails to take reasonable care in their actions to rescue the person, they could be liable in negligence. In reality the circumstances in which a rescuer will be considered negligent are extremely rare and it should therefore not be a deterrent to trying to help in such circumstances. If you have a question for our legal advice team you can submit it by email: enquiries@comercrawley.co.uk or in writing to: Chancery House, Victoria Road, Diss, Norfolk IP22 4HZ.

From 7th January 2013, HMRC will be asking the principal earner to pay back the Child Benefit that their partner has received and will be collecting this through their tax return. This could lead to additional costs of up to £2,449.20 for a family with three children under 16. New Support Group For People Living With Cancer In Diss Secondary Cancer survivor Jay Hurley, 52, who is in remission from kidney cancer, has set up a support group with a difference in Diss to help local people living with, or caring for someone with cancer to heal and find meaning. The group launched on Thursday 1st November at The Back Space of the Angel Cafe, 1 Fair Green, Roydon, Diss from 10.30am until 1pm. Initially, the group meets monthly on a Thursday morning but plans are afoot to offer evening sessions for people with daytime commitments. The Art Of Life’s holistic approach focuses on helping anyone affected by cancer to achieve a feeling of total wellness, spiritually, physically and mentally. From creative workshops, complementary and colour therapies to meditation, relaxation and gentle exercise, the group offers people a chance to get together to help regain a sense of balance and control where before, perhaps there was none. It has been set up with help from charity Macmillan Cancer Support who provided £500 in funding along with £1,981 from South Norfolk Council, Neighborhood Fund and £1,000 from The Big C. Jay Hurley, Founder said: “Receiving the devastating news in early 2011 that my body had cancer followed recently with a secondary diagnosis, means that I know exactly what it’s like to experience the pain, discomfort and emotional trauma that perhaps many people are going through right now. Getting the right support was a 30 mile round trip and for me, a cup of coffee and a chat wasn’t enough to express exactly how I felt. I discovered that drawing and story-
boarding my cancer coupled with mediation and relaxation, helped to find meaning where before I had none. I set up The Art Of Life, a voluntary group, for local people wishing to access support in their own community.” Jay went on to say: “Don’t worry if you can’t draw or paint. It’s not about creating a fantastic piece of art. It’s about helping you to explore your cancer journey using a variety of art materials and guided meditation to help you tell your own story when words fail” Louise McCoy, Macmillan Involvement Coordinator said: “Cancer is the toughest fight most of us will ever face but you don’t have to go through it alone. By joining a support group you can spend time with people who share, understand and accept your experience. Having someone to talk to can make a huge difference in helping you come to terms with what’s happening and look after yourself.” Macmillan supports more than 800 independent cancer self help and support group and organisations across the UK, with free information, guidance and training for those running them. For more information about The Art Of Life and to book, please get in touch with Jay Hurley, telephone 07786 833916, email: the_art_of_life@rocketmail.com or register through the (soon to launch) website: www.theaartoflife.org.uk.

Dispatch Magazine Comes Out On Top In Our Comprehensive Customer Survey Over the past 2 months, Dispatch Magazine has conducted a comprehensive customer survey in order to get an unbias overview of how Dispatch Magazine is seen by our readers against other weekly and monthly publications. It is only by knowing what our readers are looking for in Dispatch Magazine, that we can give them what they want and take away the bits that are of no interest. We also like to know what you think of us, and are we bringing enough community news to you, from all aspects of the community organisations which operate in our towns. The results very much say what we have been hearing for many years, but we never want to rest on our laurels. Below is a full survey results table, and here is a summary of what our readers think; In Attleborough, everyone receives a copy of Dispatch Magazine, where as only 50% receive a regular copy of the Attleborough Mercury, 30% receive Breckland Voice and only 2% receive a copy of Your Local Mag. In Diss however, 90% of those surveyed said they receive a copy of Dispatch Magazine,
60% receives the Diss Mercury (the Diss Mercury has a stonger hold in Diss than the Attleborough Mercury has in Attleborough) and only a staggering 10% confirmed Your Local Mag as coming through the letter box every month. We received a fantastic 100% for Dispatch Magazine being informatative, with 50% of Attleborough residents liking the regular ‘Town Council NoticeBoard’ feature that we run each month. Well done Attleborough Town Council for keeping your residents informed of what is going on in and around the town, via Dispatch Magazine. Not surprisingly 70% of Diss residents said they would like more information about their own town, so perhaps Diss Town Council you can send us the information we ask for every month and we can ensure the residents of Diss are as informed about Town Council issues as those in Attleborough.
A high percentage from both towns read Dispatch Magazine online at a round 75% each, and the same number use the Dispatch Magazine Community websites, being either Dissonline.co.uk or Attleboroughonline.co.uk The numbers of people looking to make major purchases over the next 12 months was very simular in both towns, although more people from Attleborough are looking to go on holiday, whereas more people in Diss are looking to buy a new computer. (Thats great news for local businesses like 1-2-1 Computers) The Attleborough Town Council faired better in ‘Does your Town Council do a good job’ and in the ‘Do you know what your council does’ sections. More people in Attleborough also know that Sam Taylor is the mayor of Attleborough, than Diss residents know that Graham Minshull is the mayor of Diss.

Interestingly the same numbers of people in Diss and Attleborough use Facebook over Twitter and Dispatch Magazine is read by roughly 2 people per household every month. This means, by taking the results of an independent survey, from the residents of Diss and Attleborough, Dispatch Magazine is received and read by more people than any other local publication. It’s more informative, it offers great features every month and it brings worthwhile community news both in print and online to the residents of Diss and Attleborough. Well to be honest, after 11 years of producing Dispatch Magazine you’d expect us to have it right by now, wouldn’t you? Last year over 6,000 people attended what has rapidly become one of Norfolks most spectaular christmas lights display. Chairperson Karen Pettitt said we are a very small committee and everyone works very hard to make this event a success but without the hard work of Geoff and Avril who arrange for the christmas lights to be put up the christmas lights would not happen so the committee would like to thank them for all their help and hard work. Stalls are available at £10 per table and anyone wishing to book a stall can contact Karen Pettitt on 01953 455755.

From 31st December 2012, there are changes afoot for the financial services industry that have been brought about by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) Retail Distribution Review (RDR) and every financial adviser will have to be classified as independent or restricted. Firms that provide independent advice must make recommendations based on a ‘comprehensive and fair analysis of the relevant market’ and provide ‘unbiased and unrestricted’ advice. Firms that cannot fully meet these requirements will be deemed to be offering restricted advice.
One of the other changes brought about by RDR is that all advisers will have to have an enhanced minimum level of qualification. This higher level of qualification and the changes by RDR may result in several advisers leaving the industry and the high
street banks are having to rethink whether they will continue to offer financial advice to their customers.
At ML Financial Associates all the advisers belong to the financial services professional body - the Personal Finance Society (PFS). We also adhere to the Chartered Insurance Institute code of ethics. Yes we are independent and will remain independent and all our advisers DO already have the enhanced qualifications. We feel these matters are important to give our clients the most suitable advice, with products from the entire market. Ask your adviser if they are ready with all the changes and enhanced qualifications, if not please talk to us. Besthorpe W.I. On Wednesday 26th September members met in the Francis Room of the Connaught Hall with our President Angela Furness in the chair. After we had said the Alberta Creed, Angela welcomed our speaker Mr Arthur Barrett, who was with us for the second time this year. We were in for a great treat and the hour was not long enough for Mr Barrett to share with us his passion for the late 19th century operas of Gilbert & Sullivan. He told us a little of the two men’s lives and played many extracts from their music. Some recordings were audio only, others were DVDs or the old video tapes. We enjoyed some of the classic performances of the fifties and sixties, as well as some more modern ones, especially from Australia. Mr Barrett stirred many pleasant memories and we tapped our feet and sang along. The catchiness of the tunes and the wit of the words are truly timeless. Mr Barrett could have entertained us for much longer and it was reluctantly that we had to bring things to a close. After refreshments and the raffle, we held our business meeting. The competition, for an old show or
concert programme, was won by Anne Scottwith, appropriately, a G & S programme. The flower competition was won by Angela Furness’s passion flowers. On 24th October our speaker was Charlotte Philcox, whose title will be “Hedgerow Harvest” (a slight change of subject due to abnormal weather conditions). On 28th November we hold our AGM and elect our officers and committee for 2013. On Wednesday 12th December we shall be having a Christmas celebration at The Griffin. Visitors are always welcome to our meetings which are held in the Francis Room and begin at 7.30 pm. Perhaps I should point out that you do not have to live in Besthorpe to visit us, or to join us! Did You Know, The Cost Of Energy Bills Have Soared By 140% In The Last Eight Years? And They Are About To Increase Again. The cost of household energy has risen seven times faster than household income since 2004, according to a recent study. The high costs are now the top household worry for Britons, ahead of the rising cost of food and mortgage payments. While the average UK household income has increased by 20% from £32,812 in 2004 to £39,468 today, the average energy bill has risen by 140%. Households were spending an average of £522 a year for their energy in 2004, but now pay £1,252 a year - 3.2% of income or double the 1.6% of eight years ago. The study found 83% of people believe that rising energy bills have had an impact on their disposable income, with 17% of these reporting that they no longer have any disposable income as a result and 27% saying energy bills have reduced their disposable income dramatically. Director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com Ann Robinson said: “This is the cold reality facing households today; in less than 10 years our energy bills have rocketed by 140%. The break-neck speed at which energy prices have sprinted upwards has caught many people unawares. Consumers are still playing catch-up. “Energy now accounts for a significant slice of household income which is why the numbers rationing their energy use have risen so steeply in recent years. But going cold or without is a short-term and potentially harmful fix and not a long-term solution.” So what can be done to reduce your household bills? You can control how much you spend on energy by making your home more energy-efficient and paying less for the energy you do use by moving to a competitively-priced energy plan. The Consumer magazine Which? has awarded Utility Warehouse with the best energy supplier award for the past 5 years. The survey looked at customer service, value for money and accuracy of bills, so perhaps this is a good starting point. The other great advantage of Utility Warehouse is they have a team of local authorised distributors who can conduct a FREE energy review. This will give you an immediate indication of what you are paying against what savings can be made, and as well as being completely free, it only takes around 15 mins. Savings can be made, you just need to put it into action. Call me now and let’s see how much you could reduce your energy bills by. Jonathan - 07802 690589

Movember
Salon FX
A Global Movement.
Darren has been trading in Attleborough for over 8 years at Edenside Drive, Attleborough.
Since its humble beginnings in Melbourne, Australia Movember has grown to become a truly global movement inspiring more than 1.9 Million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas to participate with formal campaigns in Australia, New Zealand, the US, Canada, the UK, South Africa, Ireland, Finland, the Netherlands, Spain, Denmark, Norway, Belgium and the Czech Republic. In addition, Movember is aware of Mo Bros and Mo Sistas supporting the campaign and men’s health causes across the globe, from Russia to Dubai, Hong Kong to Antarctica, Rio de Janeiro to Mumbai, and everywhere in between. No matter the country or city, Movember will continue to work to change established habits and attitudes men have about their health, to educate men about the health risks they face, and to act on that knowledge, thereby increasing the chances of early detection, diagnosis and effective treatment. In 2011, over 854,000 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas around the world got on board, raising GBP 79.3 million. During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in the UK and around the world. The aim of which is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and testicular cancer. Once registered at movember.com each Mo Bro must begin the 1st of Movember with a clean shaven face. For the entire month each Mo Bro must grow and groom a moustache.
There is to be no joining of the mo to the sideburns (that’s considered a beard), there’s to be no joining of the handlebars to the chin (that’s considered a goatee) and each Mo Bro must conduct himself like a true gentleman. A Mo Sista is essentially a woman who loves a Mo. An individual that is dedicated to supporting the Mo Bros in her life through their moustache growing journey; whether it be a friend, colleague, family member or partner. These inspirational women are committed to raising awareness of men’s health issues and much needed funds for men’s health along the way.

Mo Bros effectively become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November and through their actions and words raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health. At the end of the month, Mo Bros and Mo Sistas celebrate their Movember journey throwing their own Movember parties or attending one of the Gala Partés held around the world to stand tall and celebrate the moustache. The funds raised in the UK are directed to programmes run directly by Movember and our men’s health partners, Prostate Cancer UK and the Institute of Cancer Research. NBR Scooter Brokers
Able Community Care
NBR Scooter Brokers is a family run business which prides itself on their commitment to their customers (existing and new!!)
In the past when a person was discharged from hospital after treatment, many were given the choice to have a period of time in a convalescent care home.
Their main objective is to provide impartial advice together with a friendly and efficient service!! They offer the service of a free, no obligation, home demonstration for all of their products to ensure they are suitable for your needs. Whilst their core business is the supply of new mobility scooters, they also have a selection of pre-owned scooters as they offer a part exchange service. In addition to mobility scooters, they can also supply the following: • Stairlifts • Powered wheelchairs • Powerchairs • Rise & recline armchairs • Adjustable beds
November 2012
• Bathlifts • 3 & 4 wheel walkers • Attendant and self propelled wheelchairs Apart from selling, they also offer a hire service, together with repairs, servicing and insurance work. NBR scooter brokers are accredited with Norfolk trusted traders which is organised by Norfolk County Council.
This transition period between hospital and home would build up independence, aid recuperation and would enable care staff to monitor that all was well thereby enabling the ‘patient’, after one or two weeks, to return home safely and confident. The convalescent home has now almost disappeared and national statistics show that, especially where older patients are concerned, the re-admission figures are high with many having to return to hospital within a month.
in the home such as general cleaning, the laundry, shopping, preparing meals, etc. The Carer can assist with personal care tasks or just be on hand if help is needed e.g. when bathing or showering. The Live-in Carer can help a person recover their social life. For example, by accompanying a person who likes to go shopping, attend local events, visit a local restaurant, resume attendance at a local group or church, etc.
Able Community Care’s Home from Hospital Care Package will enable a person to have convalescent care at home.
The Carer will reduce the risks of a person returning home on their own and will ensure a happier and more confident ex-patient can return to the independent lifestyle they wish to have.
The Home from Hospital Care Package provides a Live-In Carer who will carry out domestic tasks

Keeping Warm Cold weather can lead to serious health problems such as heart attacks, strokes, pneumonia and depression. The chances of these problems are higher if you’re vulnerable to cold-related illnesses because of one or more of the following: • you’re over 60 • you’re on a low income (so can’t afford heating) • you have a long-term health condition such as heart, lung or kidney disease
• Wrap up warm, inside and out. Several thin layers of clothes are better than one thick layer. Don’t forget to wear hats, gloves and scarves. If possible, stay inside during a cold period if you have heart or respiratory problems. • Keep active. Move around at least once an hour and don’t sit down for long periods of time. Even light exercise will help keep you warm.
• you are disabled How to stay warm
November 2012
• Look out for elderly friends and neighbours. Check they’re safe and well through the winter.
• Keep your home warm. Your main living room should be between around 18-21C (64-70F) and the rest of the house at a minimum of 16C (61F).
Make sure they’re warm enough, especially at night, and have stocks of food and medicines so they don’t need to go out during very cold weather.
You can also use a hot-water bottle or electric blanket (but not both at the same time) to keep warm while you’re in bed.
If you are worried about a relative or an elderly neighbour, contact your local council or ring the Age UK helpline on 0800 00 99 66.

Mercedes-Benz B 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY SPORT By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist. THINGS ARE changing in the world of motoring. Premium brand car manufacturers are offering smaller models - take the Audi A1 and the BMW 1 Series for example. Of course, Mercedes-Benz was ahead of many. After all, it introduced the entrylevel A-Class supermini in 1997. Then in 2005 the B-Class, essentially an enlarged A-Class, was ushered in. Why? Well, sometimes you just need a luxury car that sits more towards medium than mini. And that’s what the B Class is all about. But time doesn’t stand still, and Mercedes felt a change of direction was needed for the B Class this year. The German motor maker has made the car more agile and efficient by lowering its height. Also, as is the case with the 200 CDI on test here, a new diesel engine has been fitted alongside a more modern manual transmission. So, what’s the revised B-Class like? Well, it’s a typical Mercedes sports tourer, offering bags of room, combined with the dynamic performance of a hatchback saloon. The character lines of the exterior point to both of these qualities: the front and rear demonstrate width-

emphasising design, with a prominent grille and headlamps extending along the sides at the front, while the rear end has a broad rear window, two-piece tail lights and a big tailgate with low loading sill. The fresh, athletic, lines and the aerodynamics are particularly apparent in the side line: the bonnet flows flawlessly into the A-pillar and the roof line descends neatly to the attractive roof spoiler. At the bottom edge the body includes side skirts which add a soft touch to the car’s form, whilst sophisticated details, such as the deftly designed headlamps, confirm the marque’s distinctive first-rate credentials. Naturally, and as you would expect of a quality European car producer, the BClass is as nice on the inside as it is on the outside. High-quality materials and finely structured surfaces abound. Three air vents in the middle of the dash with their unique cruciform nozzles add a particularly sporty element to the interior’s design. Other touches such as a threespoke leather trimmed steering wheel and seats with contrasting stitching are very pleasing to the eye. Interestingly, in response to requests from many customers, the sitting position is now more upright in the reborn B-Class. This makes for great visibility when you’re behind the wheel. Indeed, the more erect seating arrangement, in combination with a lowering of the vehicle’s floor at the rear, leads to a degree of legroom which even surpasses that of the Mercedes-Benz S and E-Class. On the move the B 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY SPORT is incredibly nimble. You’d think that would make it pleasurable on twisty rural routes. Well it does in a way, but it doesn’t make for comfortable

driving. You see, in ‘Sport’ guise the car’s suspension is far too harsh and, because it also sits on 18 inch alloys, it crashes and bangs over the slightest change of road surface. Mind you, if you don’t mind having your fillings rattled out of your molars then the car is great fun to throw around corners. It’s also fantastic for motorway mile munching. That’s when the car magically decides to ignore any road imperfections and comfort levels resume to what you might expect from Mercedes-Benz. Needless to say, if you do a lot of driving, then safety should be at the forefront of your mind when buying a car. The B-Class goes the extra mile in this respect. As well as the usual supply of airbags and protective gadgetry, it features a radarbased collision warning system with adaptive Brake Assist, which lowers the risk of rear-end crashes. The Collision Prevention Assist technology gives out a visual and acoustic warning to alert you to obstacles and prepares Brake Assist for the most precise possible braking response. This is initiated as soon as you forcefully operate the brake pedal. In contrast to some systems currently on the market the new Collision Prevention Assist feature is not merely intended to minimise minor damage in urban traffic. Instead, this innovative solution is aimed at protecting you from typical rear-end collisions in hazardous traffic situations. Mercedes-Benz says it expects the safety system to have a “significant positive effect” on accident statistics. As well as being a lively, safe, family oriented number, the B 200 CDI never forgets it comes from pedigree stock. It offers internet access, voice control, sat-nav and MP3 connectivity. Traditionally these executive features were the reserve of luxurious Euro-barges.
Now you can indulge yourself without having to fork out for one. Oh, and there’s one other advantage of driving a B-Class - it’s so much easier to park compared with a more extravagant motor. Let’s face it; once you’ve battled the morning rush hour, and the only parking bay left is the awkward one in the corner, you’re going to be thanking yourself you didn’t think bigger was better when you walked into that Mercedes-Benz showroom.
