Crucial Crew Around 1,100 St Edmundsbury school children will be learning vital life-lessons at Crucial Crew 2014 next month. Year six children aged between 10 and 11 years, from 19 schools, will come together at West Suffolk College in Bury St Edmunds to experience various scenarios, staffed by experts who show children how to deal with potentially dangerous situations and

how to protect both themselves and others. The Fire Service will simulate what it is like being in a burning house and East Anglian Dogs Trust will explain how to keep safe around dogs.

As well as fire and dog safety, the focus is also on road safety, food safety, personal safety and personal well being. This year 1100 children from 19 schools will be attending the scenarios run by the Fire Service, Police, Road

Safety, Environmental Health, East Anglian Dogs Trust, and Abbeycroft Leisure. Crucial Crew is organised and funded by St Edmundsbury Borough Council. Thanks go to West Suffolk College for allowing free use of their facilities.

INTERVIEW WITH 5

Interview With Bury St Edmunds Council Chairman Stefan Oliver Stefan Oliver is a local man with a fascinating family history Stefan, please give us a brief intorduction to who you are and what you do... I was re- elected for the second time as Chairman of BstE TC. I have been a Town Councillor since the Town Council was reformed in 2003. My family were wine merchants in Bury, a business known as Hunter and Oliver Ltd, founded in 1776. The family have been connected to Bury since the earliest found record When Robert Oliver was made Chief Burgess of Bury in 1263. That earlier part of the family were involved with the affairs of the Abbey. Following the Reformation, the family was fined out of existence and moved away. Some went to America with Wynthrop’s expedition and the eldest moved to work in Sudbury. In 1750 (circ,) they were able to return to Bury and set up a grocery business, a branch of their activity in Sudbury. The wine merchant business soon followed and continued until it was sold in 1966. My older brother joined the wine firm and I was trained as a farm manager. I passed through the Essex Institute of Agriculture at Writtle. I then worked for three years growing green peas in Essex. We had 100 acres grown on contract for us and had the first mobile pea harvesters to come from America. The peas went to a canning factory near Maldon. In 1964 I left pea growing and took a post as farm manager on a 1200 acre estate in Hertfordshire. In that same year I married Anne Batho and we subsequently had four sons.

locally and at Flatford Mill. I became very involved in Heraldry and spent some time studying at the College of Arms. Whilst our boys were young, I was very involved in running the Catholic Scout troop in Bury. !n 1998 I accepted a post as Art Master at Moreton Hall Preparatory school where I worked until retiring in 2010. In 2001 I obtained a seat on the County Council, following my mother, brother and Sister in law, from which I was deselected 2013. In 2002 I won a seat on the Borough Council which I still hold. In 2005 and 6, I was elected Mayor of the Borough, being the 6th generation of my family to hold that honour. I have written three books, the first two, about Heraldry and Illuminated letters, and the third a story in novel form about my maternal grand parents.

from the Town Council. We are a small group (17) and party politics often impede any kind of progress or cohesion. What do you like about being involved with the Town Council? The ability, all be it small, to have some influence in the well being of the Town and residents.

Quick Fire Round... Tea or Coffee? Coffee. Beer or Wine? Wine . Favourite Song? Danny boy .

What is your ultimate career goal? To know that I have done what I can for Bury St Edmunds.

Favourite Film? Dr Zivago.

And finally...Is there a skeleton you wish to reveal? Skeletons are best kept in the cupboard.

Favourite Read? “Like Chaff to The Wind” by Robert Morgan (Amazon).

If we at Dispatch could give you a magic wand and grant you one wish, what would it be? With your magic wand, I would solve all the car parking problems in Bury

Favourite Holiday Location? Scotland. Vegetarian or Carnivore? Omnivore.

What brought you to Bury? Birth, Betrothal or Business? I was born here, with twin sister, in 1939 to Geoffrey and Gabrielle Oliver In your opinion, what is the best thing about Bury St Edmunds? The people who live here. What three things would you like people to know about you? That I am married and a Catholic. I have four sons, of whom I am very proud and that I have done what I can to advance the good and well being of Bury and those who live here. What do you consider to be your greatest achievement to date? To have been Mayor of Bury, the 6th generation of my family to hold that office.

In 1972 I left this post and we moved to a cottage in Whepstead, just to the South of Bury , where I set up as a freelance glass engraver. This was a hobby that I had been working at for some years, to the point that I felt I could earn a living.

How did you get involved in the Bury St Edmunds Council? My father was a Borough Councillor. My mother was a County Councillor and my Grandfather back through the generations, also. Being the last one of my family left, the duty fell to me.

This is a craft that I have carried on to the present day. I also paint and draw and have run classes for these subjects

What political party do you stand for and why? I would like to see party politics removed

On Sunday 10th August (10am-3pm) World Horse Welfare Hall Farm Rescue and Rehoming Centre, Snetterton, Norfolk, will be holding its annual fundraising Summer Extravaganza. This year, the Extravaganza will be bigger and better than ever before, so don’t miss out – make sure you put the date in your diary now! The event opens at 10am and the displays in the main ring kick off at 11am with a special demonstration by the Hall Farm grooms and equine residents. A fast and furious scurry driving spectacular will be up next, to keep the audience on the edge of their seats – followed by the IMPs Motorcycle Display Team, who are sure to thrill show-goers

young and old alike. Other exciting main ring displays include dog agility and Horse Boarding uK, which features the exhilarating mix of a skateboarder being towed around a course behind a horse and rider – not a sport for the faint-hearted! Additional attractions include a farriery competition, a dog show, mounted police specials, birds of prey, heavy horses and vintage cars and tractors. Shoppers will be well-catered for with a wide variety of trade stands and craft stalls, a giant tombola and a huge tack stall, which will offer a great range of both new and secondhand tack and rugs. Younger visitors will be kept entertained by the children’s zone – complete with games area, facepainting and much more – plus

donkey rides, tractor-trailer rides around the farm and of course the chance to pat a pony. You will be spoilt for choice on refreshments, with a variety of food and hot and cold drinks available – plus a licensed bar and live music. Our Summer Extravaganza Fundraising Fun Day really does have something for all the family – and all this for an entry fee of only £5 per car. World Horse Welfare is an international horse charity that improves the lives of

horses in the uK and around the world through education, campaigning, and hands-on care. At Hall Farm – just one of four Rescue and Rehoming Centres the charity has around the uK – we care for around 160 horses at any one time, nursing them back to health before finding them loving new homes. Proceeds from this year’s Extravaganza will help to fund our vital work helping horses in need worldwide. www.worldhorsewelfare.org

MOTORING REVIEW 1

Audi R8 Coupe AUDI’S R8, the emperor of the Germanic brand’s line‐up stirs up a heady soup of emotions when you slip behind its wheel Not only does the dazzling supercar look good enough to eat, it almost flirts with you, tempting you to throw away your worries and immerse yourself in its company.

behind the two front seats keeps you respectful of the Audi’s capabilities at all times. A car’s ability to accelerate quickly and reach a blistering top speed is, naturally, desirable. However it’s the handling dynamics, and talent to drive rapidly through the bends, that make for a spine-tingling driving experience. And that’s where the R8 V10 delivers.

Flushed cheeks, a racing heart and clammy hands are all the sensations you’ll experience when you first start up the Audi. And inside your body there’ll be changes that signal Cupid has fired his arrow. In all honestly the R8, especially in V10 guise as tested here with a Lamborghini-derived 5.2-litre engine, will get your dopamine and serotonin chemicals bubbling. Yes, what I’m saying is that you’ll fall in love, or certainly lust, with the two door coupe.

On the road, the R8 V10 completes the zero to 62mph sprint in 3.6 seconds and has an autobahn focused top speed of 195mph. The 10 cylinder engine produces 518bhp and churns out 390.91 lb‐ft of turning force (torque) to the crankshaft at 6,500 rpm.

It’s a true beauty; a work of automotive art and the model has recently become even more stunning to look at, let alone drive.

The seven‐speed S tronic gearbox, which replaces the R tronic used previously, is standard in all V10 models.

Aesthetically, the R8 now comes with all‐light-emitting diode (LED) headlights, and a single-frame grille. A redesigned diffuser and huge, round tailpipes are the most eye‐catching new features. The rear lights include dynamic indicators, a global first from Audi. Produced by LEDs, the turn signal runs from the inside out in the direction in which you want to go.

The fast shifting dual‐clutch transmission features an ingenious launch control function that provides the best possible traction when the car flexes its muscles and takes off. The might of the engine’s output momentarily thumps you back into your seat when the Audi’s clout is unleashed via the Quattro

permanent all‐wheel drive system. And the sound of the car is almost as seductive as its looks. Even at moderate speed there’s a deep, multi-layered, glorious rumble. But hit the R8’s ‘Sport’ button and you get a gratifying crackling and popping on the downshifts. The snarl is animalistic, and deeply nourishing for any petrol head’s ears. Inside, the high‐performance sports car is now even more sophisticated. You and your passenger sit in bucket seats with folding backrests, and the seat covers and inserts in the door liners are quilted. Getting comfortable behind the wheel is easy and it’s surprisingly straightforward to drive. That said; the grunting, visceral tone emitting from the powertrain assembled
