The Magna Carta 800 Bury St Edmunds Town Council has granted £2,000 to the Magna Carta 800 Committee to fund the purchase of a stone to be sculpted by master stone mason, Brian Ansell, as a legacy for the townspeople of its Magna Carta involvement, Bury St Edmunds having become a Magna Carta Trust town in 1957. Brian Ansell, who has done work for Lincoln Cathedral and York Minster) has volunteered to create a commemorative sculpture to stand in the Water Garden in the Abbey Gardens (for which approval
has already been given by English Heritage). This project is very exciting as, while being sculpting in situ, members of the public will be able to watch
its progress and creation. The Town will be continuing its Magna Carta celebrations with a light and sound festival in October. The Magna Carta 800 Committee is considering asking the Town’s young people to come
forward with ideas for designs to be incorporated into the sculpture so further news to follow.
East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) Planning permission approved for new Norfolk children’s hospice The possibility of a purpose-built children’s hospice in Norfolk to revolutionise the way children’s palliative care is delivered is a step closer after a planning application by East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) was granted. Subject to a successful fundraising campaign, the new hospice will be built on a 5-acre woodland plot in
Framingham Earl and will replace the charity’s current facility in Quidenham in the south of the county. Graham Butland, EACH Chief Executive, said: “The current Norfolk hospice in Quidenham has provided care and support for more than two decades and has been a home from home for families, but it’s very restricted in its facilities and development and a new hospice will
bring the county in line with services we offer in Cambridgeshire, Essex and Suffolk. “We’d like to thank everyone involved in the project so far. We’re over the first hurdle in gaining planning permission, but we’ve now got the challenge of encouraging the good people of East Anglia to help us raise the funds needed to build and equip the new hospice.” Accessibility and flexibility is restricted at Quidenham and there isn’t room for expansion. Quidenham is in south Norfolk with many families travelling large distances to access care – often when time is vital. Benefits of the new hospice will include: • More choice and flexibility for families. • Improved accessibility and specialist equipment across the whole building.
• • • • • •
A hydrotherapy pool. Far better dedicated facilities for play and music therapy, and more appropriate areas for older children and young people. Better and more appropriate family accommodation. Dedicated bathrooms for all bedrooms. Improved facilities for on-site family support groups and activities. Nearer to the centre of the county making it easier for many families to visit and with closer/easier access to the county’s hospitals.
With the purchase of land, building costs and professional fees, the appeal will need to raise in the region of £10 million, in addition to the voluntary funds still required to run EACH services during this time. EACH will continue to run Quidenham hospice to its current high standards until a new hospice is built. If you’d like to help the appeal to build a new children’s hospice for Norfolk, please contact the EACH Norfolk Fundraising team: EACH Fundraising, Suite 5, The Old Dairy, Elm Farm Business Park, Wymondham, NR18 0SW. Working Together Equally Leading Lives is a 100% employee owned organisation, a co-operative that provides social care for people with learning disabilities right across Suffolk. We offer support in the home, in day services, in the community and through providing families with short break respite stays. Employee ownership is an attractive model for businesses working in social care where values relating to caring for people are important. Staff are recruited into the organisation on the basis of their desire and ability to support vulnerable people to live full and active lives. The company’s mission statement is to support people to live the life they choose and is the role of the Support Worker to make this happen through individual ‘person centred’ plans. These give individuals and their families the chance to say how they want to be supported and the things they would like to do in life.
Leading Lives staff have the opportunity to buy a £1 share and this symbolises their stake in the business. They also attend a training course about their role in an employee led organisation. All staff who have opted to become members, are able to stand for the Company’s Board. Board members are all staff voted for by their peers and the Board includes front line employees such as Support Workers. The company opted for this structure to bring the organisation closer to its customers as many decisions affecting the whole company are made by front line staff who ultimately know customers best. www.leadinglives.org.uk
Staff recruitment and retention is taken very seriously with a full induction programme, comprehensive training and opportunities for career progression.

Festival Menu Is A Feast Of Fun Planning a trip to the beach this August bank holiday? Then look no further than Bury St Edmunds for sun, sand and a vast selection of sweet and savoury treats at the annual Ourburystedmunds Food and Drink Festival Two of television’s best loved chefs will be the toast of the town in the Aga Rangemaster Theatre Kitchen. Brian Turner and Lesley Waters will each feature on the menu for one day of the two-day event, which is now in its third year and organised by the Business Improvement District (BID). But it’s not all about the food. There will be plenty to see and do at the free festival which takes place at venues throughout the town centre, with a number of local businesses joining in with offers or special promotions. Chief Executive of the BID Mark Cordell said: “I’m delighted we have secured two top celebrity chefs for this year’s Ourburystedmunds Food and Drink Festival. Lesley and Brian will both be familiar to many from their television careers and I know they will put on entertaining cooking displays. Among the local appearances on the stage this year will be Carluccio’s and Café Del Mar who will be cooking up a treat on Sunday and Monday respectively along with a number of other respected chefs from the town. “We’re hoping for lovely weather to allow visitors to enjoy some tropical tastes from our World Market and let their imaginations take them to a beach destination to match.” Once again the Aga Rangemaster Theatre Kitchen, which will be positioned near Moyses Hall Museum, will host a full programme of demonstrations on each day. As well as the two celebrity chefs a number of favourite eateries in the town will also be showcasing signature dishes. Brian Turner who appeared on ‘Ready Steady Cook’ from its early days in 1994 and opened his own restaurant in 1986 is appearing on Monday 25th August. Lesley Waters, who has worked in television since 1989 and written
Issue 23 2014
nearly 20 cookery books, takes part on Sunday 24th August. Both will give three demonstrations at 11am, 1pm and 3pm. Returning to the theatre kitchen this year will be chefs from Palmers Coffee Shop and The Angel Hotel. Benson Blakes will be giving a cocktail-making demonstration and accountants Jacobs Allen will entertain the crowd with a cooking competition on a similar theme to ‘Ready Steady Cook.’ And two of the town’s restaurants that were both recently listed as among the top 50 in the country outside London will also be sharing their recipes for success when chefs from Pea Porridge and Maison Bleue are in the theatre kitchen on the Sunday. Around the town centre itself there will be plenty of other attractions to whet the appetite. For those who like it hot – a chilli festival will be found in Langton Place off Hatter Street where a Mexican Mariachi band will be entertaining
everyone and there’ll be stalls selling tasty plates of chilli as well as sauces and chutneys. The Farmers’ Market will be back on Angel Hill, where local producers will offer everything from apple juice to sausages as well as sweet treats including cakes, fudge and ice-cream. This popular part of the festival brings producers who will be familiar to customers from some of the region’s other well-known Farmers’ Markets organised by Suffolk Market Events. Local businesses are also organising their own activities to complement the festival. On the Sunday, the Farmers’ Club on Northgate Street is holding a wine tasting, mini beer festival and BBQ and on the same day The Old Cannon Brewery in Cannon Street will also be holding a beer festival with live music. Away from the edible attractions of the festival, the highlight of this year’s event is bound to be the urban beach which
has been a huge success at the last two Ourburystedmunds Whitsun Fayres. It’s an opportunity to relax in a deckchair and enjoy a stick of seaside rock while the youngsters build sandcastles. Why go to one of the shingle beaches on the Suffolk coast when the Bury St Edmunds beach offers soft golden sand. For this event it moves from The Traverse to Charter Square in the arc shopping centre, where there will also be fairground rides and more stalls. There’s plenty more to entertain younger visitors as well. The everpopular mini-farm with a range of animals for children to pet will be in its usual spot on Abbeygate Street. Entertainers such as musicians, stiltwalkers and a magician will be roaming the town and creative youngsters can even have a go at decorating their own cakes at a cupcake workshop. Mark Cordell added: “Although this event showcases a stunning variety of food and drink options that wouldn’t normally be here, it’s also a chance for people to visit some of our established bars, restaurants and cafes of which Bury St Edmunds has a fantastic selection. We have some recent additions in this sector as well as the very established favourites of many, so I hope that once the festival closes for the evening visitors will take the opportunity to stay in the town a little longer and look at what they are offering.” The Ourburystedmunds Food and Drink festival is a free event that will offer something for all ages and tastes. It’s open from 10am to 5pm on both days and more information about it can be found at www. burystedmundsfestivals.com. Or download the Ourburystedmunds App for the very latest offers and a comprehensive guide to more than 360 town centre businesses.

Wade Windows Suffolk company offer a full range of window & doors, plus much more! Wade Windows are members of The League of Professional Craftsmen and of FENSA who are the governing body for the new Building Regulations Part L. They have a dealership with one of the most experienced manufactures of PVCu windows and doors.
• Standard B rated window • Secured by Design optional extra Composite doors are a modern twist on the more traditional looking wooden front doors, similar to PVCu panels in that they come in a wide range of styles, designs and colours but utilising a 44mm thick, fully insulated door slab rather than a 28mm standard panel.
They offer The Super Fortress, Internally Beaded Window range, which is a state of the art technology, offering high security and peace of mind. With a fully contoured outer frame, sash and glazing bead the Super Fortress™ 70 will enhance the appearance of any home, and with low sightline grey weather seals and a multi chambered construction the window will also provide an excellent barrier against the British weather, improving both heat and noise insulation.
The main advantage of a composite door over a standard panel door are that they are more substantial, being 44mm thick rather than 28mm thick and therefore have the appearance of a more traditional timber front door rather than a plastic panel door. However because of the materials used they have all the benefits of a panel door, i.e. they will not warp, rot, twist, bow or crack and never need painting!
Features include: • High security internal beading • Contoured frame, sash and glazing bead • Multi point shootbolt locking • Key locking handles • Low sightline grey gaskets • Double weather seals
Wade Windows offer the complete range from the more traditional Victorian and Edwardian designs to the modern Sun Lounge design, so no matter how you intend to use your conservatory, style comfort and peace of mind are assured, in a design that is exclusively yours.

Everything Starts With A Choice... I can do anything I want, be with anyone I want, and it’ll be my choice Everyday we are constantly making choices, shall I get up or shall I lay here for just 5 more minutes.... Shall I have a bath or a shower or not bother today? Shall I wear these clothes, or these, shall I put these shoes on or would these be better ? You get the idea. Some choices we make are fairly insignificant and they don’t really have a big impact on our daily lives. These are the choices we routinely make without really thinking about them, and it won’t really make much difference if we choose this or that, life will just carry on regardless, and we won’t really think about what might have happened if we had made a different choice today regarding whatever it is we are thinking about. However, some choices we make can have a lasting effect on our lives, they are dramatic choices, choices we need to stop and think about, choices which can have a lasting effect on our destiny, and it’s these choice we need to think about and make very carefully. We choose how we live our lives, what job we do, our careers, who we work for and what we earn. Ultimately it is our choice. Most people would choose to be rich (you choose the definition of Rich) rather than poor, most people would choose to earn more money than they currently do, and most people would choose to have more family time rather than being at work all the time.
So it’s our choice, we choose, but how many of us actually do choose, rather than just accept that’s the way it is. If we all have the choice, why do so many not choose to be better or learn more or earn more or spend more time with family and friends or whatever it would take to make us better than we currently are? If you had to choose right now to be rich or poor, what would you choose?
“If you don’t like how things are, change it! You’re not a tree!” If you choose to be poor that’s great, it’s your choice, you’ve made that decision, so go and get on with it. If you choose to be rich, fantastic that’s great too, again it’s your choice, now go and get on with that. If you choose to do nothing or choose to change nothing, guess what will happen, correct….nothing, you will stay exactly as you are and nothing will change!
If you choose to want to earn more, have more time with your family, relieve some of the stresses and strains of life and you choose to want to have more enjoyment in your life, this is the best choice possible as you have chosen to do something to make a change, and given that you have made the choice I can now help you.
So… YOU have chosen to make a change but you’re not sure how; I’d like to introduce you to a fantastic business opportunity that you can work around your other commitments, like your current job or childcare. I’m looking to work closely with just a handful of energetic, ambitious and positive people who have made a choice to create a better life for themselves. People who I can work with, people who are willing to learn, who will attend local training events with me, people who will not find excuses for not earning whatever amount of money they want. I have chosen to do this, and it is one of the best choices I have ever made. I run a total of 4 businesses and I have 2 young children to look after, run to school, after school clubs and weekend activities, yet I still chose to find time to improve my situation. Therefore “I haven’t got time for this” is just an excuse, it’s your choice, but it is just an excuse. If you haven’t got time, choose to get up earlier. Richard Branson only has 24 hours in each of his days, he just chose to be successful. He made that choice! If you want to earn extra
money, only YOU can do that. No one else can make it happen, only you. So if you would like to share in my success, earn extra money, build your own business with my help and guidance and actually achieve what you’re really worth, make a choice right now to ring me and I’ll show you how. What have you got to loose? There is no commitment in your looking to see what it’s all about. If you choose to get in touch I can help you and together we will make it happen. If you choose do nothing guess what… nothing will change for you. But it’s your choice, so choose wisely!! Hyundai Santa Fe Premium 4WD 7-Seat 2.2 CRDi An economical SUV with 4x4 credentials The South Koreans have become skilled at making you feel in safe hands when it comes to car production. From the satisfying ‘thunk’ the Santa Fe’s doors make when you close them to the muffled diesel rattle on start up, you soon realise the Hyundai is made of stern stuff.
downhill brake control and hill start assist. As well as the occasional dirt track excursion, the Santa Fe will help you out with, say, caravanning adventures for the whole family. It has an impressive towing capacity of 2,600kg (braked) and, to make life easier, trailer stability assist is part of the gadgetry get-up too.
For an SUV with 4x4 credentials it’s fairly economical, returning an average 41.5mpg. It’s an especially comfortable and spacious motor too; it’ll seat five adults and there’s room for two extra little people in the third row of fold-away seats. The sizeable boot is square and low, meaning it’s a doddle to load up. In fact, it’s a perfect family-cum-business vehicle. For a biggish car the latest Santa Fe is surprisingly easy to weave through city streets and it will happily tour at 70mph on the motorway all day. The steering is direct and well weighted at all speeds - and there’s only the slightest body roll on bends, but that’s acceptable, given its lofty structure. The gutsy 2.2-litre 194bhp turbo diesel engine comes with a smooth-changing six-speed automatic gearbox, which helps
