What’s On West Suffolk Exhibition that is definitely not for the faint of heart! Museum delves deep into the macabre, the sinister and the surreal to host its latest event. Moyse’s Hall Museum in Bury St Edmunds is set to continue its 2014 run of successful events with its most ‘ghastly’ event of the year - and it’s definitely not for faint of heart! The first ever Gothika exhibition will open on the evening of Saturday December 6th and will offer both live music and the chance to see current and new exhibits in a very different, and even unearthly, light. Visitors on Saturday (for which booking is essential) will be able to tour the iconic 12th Century building at night and see exhibits, including everything from a surreal horse-head violin to a sinister gibbet cage and vintage pictures of strange spectacles and ‘human oddities’ from the Georgian Bury Fair. But that’s not before getting into the mood for the macabre by joining Bury-based band, Thy Last Drop, in the Undercroft for their own distinctive brand of ‘Victorian murderpunk’ and ‘vagabond folk’. “We have been looking forward to this exhibition all year and with live music to kick things off, it should live up to
everyone’s most gothic expectations,” said Heritage Officer, Alex McWhirter. “With Gothika, we are reinterpreting many of our collections by focusing on their elements of romance, the strange, the mysterious and the frightening, and in many ways, this exhibition feels most in keeping true with the history of the building itself.
Sample Gothika exhibits, which will be on display between 6-15 December, will include:
The origins of the landmark 12th century building remain mysterious but its rich and varied past has included serving as the town gaol, workhouse and police station, before first opening as a museum in 1899.
* Genuine artefacts of historical criminalia * Characters from chillers, both real and fiction, including Dracula, Frankenstein and prop replicas from classic 1922 horror film Nosferatu * One of only 16 original gibbet cages in the country and the only one in the world to have a photo of its occupant * Witches ‘poppet’ (voodoo) doll and ritual depositions * Weapons dating back to the 1600s rapiers and early revolvers * Vintage clothing including a late Victorian funeral dress and Gothic art * Curiosities including a 19th Century violin made out of a cow’s head and two 16th Century lobster pot helmets * A Cat O’nine tails and a genuine gauntlet * A mammoth tooth c70,000 BC * Vintage pictures from the strange spectacles and ‘human oddities’ of the Bury Fair
The museum’s collections offer a unique view into the past, documenting everything from the foundation of the early town, to the dissolution of the Abbey, prison paraphernalia and artefacts, and also offers intriguing insights into the darker corners of superstition and witchcraft.
Gothika follows on from the museum’s hugely successful 1970s and Sci-Fi exhibitions, which saw thousands of visitors pass through its doors, with the latter being dubbed by original Darth Vader actor, David Prowse, as ‘one of the best exhibitions he has ever been to’.
“It will be certainly be chilling and sinister but we think most people have a sense of the macabre and the exhibition should certainly raise a few eyebrows, if not hairs on the back of the neck!” Moyse’s Hall has looked out over Bury St Edmunds market place for almost 900 years.
Added Alex McWhirter: “We aim to bring our exhibitions alive as much as possible using our imagination, creativity and even a touch of theatre. Gothika, being true to the history of Moyse’s, is definitely no exception.” The opening weekend will conclude on Sunday 7 December with an afternoon of readings from Gothic Horror tales including: Lot 249 by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Man Sized in Marble, by Edith Nesbit and The Room in The Tower by E F Benson. For more information and to book tickets call 01284 758000 or visit www.whatsonwestsuffolk.co.uk The event on 6 December is being held between and 7 and 10pm and is strictly for over 18s only. Don’t have a cold Christmas 6 million households cut back on heat while help goes unclaimed Don’t have a cold Christmas: 6 million households cut back on heat while help goes unclaimed Rising energy costs mean the majority of us are reluctant to turn on the heating as the cold snap comes in as fears that we cannot afford our energy bills afflict four in 10 households. Around six million households across England plan to cut back on heating their home this winter due to the worry about the rising cost of fuel. Yet at the same time millions of pounds worth of help is being left unclaimed under Warm Front, the Government’s scheme to help the poorest households in England to make their homes warmer and cut their energy bills. Across England only 11,766 people applied to Warm Front between April and July last year - a huge fall compared to the 133,034 applications received in the whole of the year before. The Government is introducing changes that will make more people and families with children, who are living on low incomes, eligible for the scheme.
Issue 27 2014
As the eligibility criteria for help under the Warm Front scheme widens, you may be able to get help this year even if you have been turned down before. As this is the last year of Warm Front, Consumer Focus, Citizens Advice, Age UK and the National Children’s Bureau are joining forces to promote the scheme to make sure that as many vulnerable people and families as possible get this help as the heating and insulation improvements Warm Front offers could help thousands of households to stay warm and well and save up to £600 off their energy bills each year. Jonathan Stearn, Programme Director at Consumer Focus, says: “A cold home can damage your health. So it’s very worrying that high energy prices are leading so many people to cut back on their heating. “We want to make sure that as many people as possible are helped to cut their bills and stay warm and well through the Warm Front scheme this year. We would urge anyone struggling with their bills to find out if they can claim free help.’ Gillian Guy, CAB chief executive, adds: “We’re really worried people are
struggling with their fuel bills because they live in homes that hemorrhage heat. Yet there is lots of help out there to make your home warmer - especially if you are on a low income. Your local CAB can help you apply for a Warm Front grant and Citizens Advice will be helping people save money on their energy bills during Big Energy Saving Week.” Rachel Monaghan, Senior Development Officer for Health and Well-being at the National Children’s Bureau, says some families with children will have to make the choice whether to heat or eat this winter. She comments: “We know many families are struggling to cope with rising fuel bills and are having to cut back on other essentials like food. We also know that growing up in a cold and damp home can have a real effect on children’s health, learning and enjoyment of life. “The Warm Front scheme can help cut bills and keep families warm and healthy, so we urge anyone worried about their fuel bills to find out as soon as they can if they are eligible to receive support.”
Warm Front offers measures worth up to £3,500 (£6,000 if you need oil central heating). These measures are free to most people who receive help from the scheme and can make a big difference to their health and financial well-being, in particular in affording other bills and saving for emergencies. People can find out if they can get free by visiting their local Citizens Advice Bureau or Age UK. Alternatively look at switching your energy provider to someone like The Utility Warehouse, who guarantees they will save you money when you switch all your services to them, or they will give you back Double the Difference. It’s a bold statement, but Utility Warehouse do win the Consumer Magazine Which? recommendations time and time again, and more and more people are switching to them. The local Utility Warehouse representative for this area is: Jonathan who you can contact on 07802 690589. They offer a FREE home assessment, so it really is worth spending just 10 minutes to see how much you can reduce your bills by each month. Utility Warehouse says they save the average household around £60.00 EVERY month!
