The Apex ...announces the next Classical Music Programme. “There isn’t a hall in New York that has an acoustic as good as this” and “we play all over the world and this is one of the best”; these comments were made by members of The Kopelman Quartet during their recent concert at The Apex and join the long list of glowing accolades from musicians who have played at the award winning venue. This acoustic excellence will enhance The Apex’s diverse and enticing classical music programme which begins in Autumn. The first evening concert on the 18th October features a programme of Haydn, Verdi and Beethoven from the wonderful Sacconi String Quartet, while the following months will see well known musicians such as guitarist John Williams and violinist Tasmin Little gracing The Apex stage 26th November. There are welcome returns by several favourites; The Apex is developing a special relationship with Aurora Orchestra who visit on 15th November with the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge to perform music by Britten and Mahler;

July 2013

regular visitors, Co-Opera Co present a performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado on 22th November; the Academy of Ancient Music return in February performing music by Bach, Vivaldi, Veracini and Pisendel; and the City of London Sinfonia rounds things off in April alongside cellist Matthew Barley with a wonderful programme that includes arrangements of South American music by the likes of Carlos Jobim and Astor Piazzolla and culminates in Tavener’s gorgeous “Protecting Veil”. New to The Apex is Red Priest - the only early music group in the world to have been compared to the Rolling Stones; Evgenia Rubinova, who has played with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall; Janina Fialkowska, who has won the ‘Best Instrumental CD of the Year 2013’ and the Orchestra of St Paul’s with a programme of musical myths, legends and fairy tales conducted by Ben Palmer who grew up in Bury St Edmunds. In addition, there are four lunchtime concerts featuring students from the Royal

Academy of Music: Venti Wind Quintet on the 8th October. There are various ticket options, including subscription offers, and the usual £5 tickets for those aged under 25. Please ring the box office on 01284 758000 or see the website www.theapex.co.uk for details.

Tips For A Good Night’s Sleep We will all have the occasional night where we just can’t seem to get to sleep. Maybe you have gone to bed feeling really sleepy, but once the light goes out and the quiet of night fills the room you suddenly find yourself wide awake. You feel restless and just can’t get comfortable or perhaps your brain just won’t slow down and is determined to keep busy worrying about the day’s events or what is in store for you tomorrow. And the harder you try to get to sleep the more frustrated and awake you find yourself. Perhaps you lay awake until 3 or 4am before tiredness overwhelms you and you finally fall asleep? Does this sound familiar? For occasional sleep difficulties here are a few basic tips which may help you improve your quality of sleep:

• Do not watch TV immediately before going to bed as it overstimulates your brain. • If your brain will simply not shut up then try this simple exercise: Imagine a chest of drawers, it can be as big or as small as you like, it can be made from whatever you wish (I use an old wooden one from my childhood bedroom). Allow your thoughts to come into your mind, and as they do, simply choose a draw, open it and place that thought in, then close the draw, knowing that you can open it again tomorrow. Repeat this until you find that you have no more thoughts or worries, and then allow yourself to drift off to a quiet and restorative sleep.

• Don’t drink any caffeinated drink after 4pm Happy sleeping • Have a relaxing, warm bath before you go to bed and allow yourself to wind down and let the stress of the day go.

New Befriending Service ...aims to ease loneliness and isolation in West Suffolk. We are delighted to announce the launch of a new Befriending Service in West Suffolk. Age UK Suffolk and The Voluntary Network; have created a unique partnership to support older people who may be feeling lonely and isolated. We are looking for volunteers to visit people in their own homes on a weekly basis, offering companionship and support and providing regular ongoing visits. This provides a valuable lifeline to people who otherwise can go days without seeing or speaking to anyone. Volunteers will be fully trained and supported on an ongoing basis. Referrals can be made to the service by anyone; this includes GP’s, health

professionals, Social Services, families, or self referrals. A simple referral form is submitted and the client is then visited by the befriending co-ordinator from The Voluntary Network to explain the service. These visits help us to match the client with the most appropriate volunteer and also to identify if any additional help or support can be offered. Introductions are then made and The Voluntary Network continues to provide support to both the client and volunteer. We are keen to recruit new volunteers to help us to provide this valuable service. If you would like to find out more, make a referral or to Volunteer we would be delighted to hear from you. East Anglia Air Ambulance Enter The Dragon Mystical creatures will be coming to Norwich this summer to impart their supernatural powers on sea lovers and land dwellers alike in a bid to raise money for a local charity. Dragon boats will be docking at Whitlingham Outdoor Education Centre at Whitlingham County Park for the first East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) Dragon Boat Race. One that the charity hopes will become an annual event. Jess Down, EAAA Fundraising Manager said: “As a charity which relies on community fundraising we’re often asked which events people can attend in order to support our life saving work. Until now, we’ve only really had a fun run which people can come along to in the area which isn’t always great for those who don’t enjoy running. We’ve therefore organised our first ever dragon boat race as it will be

great fun for both those taking part and spectators.” Taking place on Sunday 21st July, in Trowse near Norwich, the event is being organised by the charity to raise vital funds to help the air ambulance enhance its hours of service and enable them to cover incidents which occur after dark. Those looking for a different type of challenge are invited to sign up and take part as the charity is now looking for teams of 15 to fill the boats, and there’ll be a prize for the best dressed participants. Jess continued: “It’s only through these sorts of events that we can continue to operate and send our crews to patients who really need their expert help.” Teams are made up of ten paddlers and one drummer although teams can consist of up to 15 people to allow for substitutions. Each team member is asked to pay a registration fee of £38 (based on a full team of 15) and the charity asks that the team raise a further £500 between them. For further details, or to book your place, contact Jess Down on 01603 489406 or email jess.down@eaaa.org.uk Follow us on Twitter at @EastAngliAirAmb or ‘like’ our Facebook page - East Anglian Air Ambulance Charity.

Things Really Worth Knowing About Wills Any errors in your Will are only likely to be discovered after you die!! Because it’s nigh on certain that you’ve never had your Will double checked have you? That makes two of you then, because it’s equally certain that the person who created your Will never had his/her handiwork checked either! Like me, you might be shocked to learn that the majority of solicitors and Will Writers (and it is the majority) do NOT double check any of the Wills they create, although a few do operate a spot-check system. Perhaps this goes a long way in explaining why possibly as many as 1 in 5 Wills could be defective! Don’t you think it’s better to find out now if your Will is defective, rather than your Executors finding out for a fact that it is, after you die? Your beneficiaries would prefer it that way too! WHO’S WILL IS IT?

Think your Will is binding? Then think again! A man had his will drafted and redrafted at least 10 times to ensure that his legacies went exactly where he wanted them to go. But after his death his beneficiaries got together and with a Deed of Variation totally changed where the legacies ended up! Or what about the lady who did everything the law required in her Will (exclusion clause + expression of wishes) to ensure that her adult daughter (estranged for 24+ years) could not benefit from her estate, only for her daughter to make and win a substantial claim on her estate when the court over ruled her Wishes! Pity someone didn’t mention forfeiture or “no contest” clauses to her and the outcome would almost certainly have been different. What about an ex-spouse? The Inheritance (provision for family & dependants) Act 1975 gives an unmarried ex-spouse the right to make a claim upon their previous

spouse’s estate! Once again, time to think about exclusion clauses! It’s not just beneficiaries you have to worry about either. Your executors have the right to ignore any funeral wishes outlined in your Will, and any cash you have put to one side for funeral expenses they can use for another purpose! A Will is not always the right answer! One thing you should always remember about Wills: any gift you make via your Will is absolute. This means that you cannot add conditions or “strings” to that gift. Once that legacy goes to cousin Hilda, then it’s entirely up to Hilda what she does with it! But absolute gifting does have a darker side. Your gift can be “lost” by your beneficiary in several different ways. Let us say that you leave your estate to your son, and he dies shortly afterwards. Now the daughter-in-law you never really cared for has 100% of that legacy! It gets worse! She remarries, so now who is her sole beneficiary! Your son could equally have lost the legacy to creditors if he became bankrupt, or perhaps ended up paying inheritance tax on the very money you also paid inheritance tax when you died! All this can be avoided with the timely use of an appropriate trust or trusts. These are of course more expensive than a simple Will, but are more affordable than ever. However they do offer substantially better protection, and not just for your children, but for their children as well! It’s called blood-line planning. Don’t get the wrong impression. A Will can still be a very powerful tool, but to get it right you need to take a different approach. As we said last month this is not about you giving instructions, this is all about getting best advice, and double checked advice at that! REDWINGS HORSE SANCTUARY

www.DispatchMagazine.co.uk

Redwings Horse Sanctuary Join the staff and horses at Redwings Horse Sanctuary for a fantastic weekend at the charity’s headquarters in Hapton, south of Norwich. This beautiful site in the heart of the Norfolk countryside is not normally open to the public, but will be ‘flinging wide its gates’ on the weekend of the 13th and 14th July from 10am to 4pm so visitors can see behind the scenes at Redwings. Best of all, entry is free of charge. This is a great chance to ‘rub noses’ with over 300 of the Sanctuary’s special rescued horses and ponies, and you can also visit the on-site horse hospital, take tours around the 350 acre site and watch displays from the handling and rehoming teams too. If it all gets a bit too exciting there will be a café and gift shop on site where you can grab a slice of cake and a rest but don’t linger too long or you may miss gorgeous orphaned foal Stephen having his dinner! There will be free children’s activities as well as a fantastic prize draw and donated tack sale, so there really is something for everyone! Dogs on leads are welcome too. Redwings is the largest horse sanctuary in the UK, currently caring for over 1300 rescued horses, ponies, donkeys and

July 2013

mules at nine sites across England. The charity has four visitor centres that are open on a more regular basis, including two in Norfolk. The first is at Caldecott Hall near Great Yarmouth, which is open daily during the Summer and is home to more than 100 of Redwings rescued horses, ponies, donkeys and mules such as handsome heavy horse Prince and cheeky donkey Denise! There is also a brand new Redwings visitor centre at Aylsham in North Norfolk, which is open Friday to Monday throughout the year. Coronation Street star Kate Ford officially opened this brand new facility to the public on Saturday 27th April at a special fun day, with close to 1000 visitors helping with the celebrations. Residents include the charity’s newest adoption stars: handsome Gulliver, gorgeous donkeys Wiggins and Wacko, and tiny tearaways The Gangster Shetlands. Entry to all Redwings’ centres is free of charge although a donation towards the charity’s welfare work is always greatly

appreciated. Redwings receives no government funding and is completely reliant on public donations to continue its vital work rescuing and rehabilitating neglected horses and educating the public on horse care issues to improve the life of all equines in the UK. Find out more at www.redwings. co.uk or telephone 0870 040 0033.

Vauxhall Mokka Tech Line 1.6 16v By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist Twitter: @carwriteups Visit: www.carwriteups.co.uk

THE VAUXHALL MOKKA mixes functionality with a comfortable elevated seating position. It’s the Griffin-badged company’s answer to the Nissan Juke or the Skoda Yeti, and power to the small Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) is provided by three efficient engines, all equipped with fuel saving Start/Stop technology. The petrol version comprises a 1.6-litre engine or a 1.4-litre Turbo and there is a 1.7-litre CDTI diesel. I drove the 113bhp 1.6 petrol Mokka; it has moderate pulling power, but, working your way through the five speed gearbox, it eventually spins up to a decent speed. It also provides a smooth and grippy ride. Looks-wise the Mokka is beefy and incorporates Vauxhall’s signature ‘blade’ on the body side, sweeping towards the rear. Its muscular disposition is reinforced by its higher ground clearance and 18” alloy wheels. But what I really liked about the Mokka is its cleverness. Inside, the vehicle displays archetypal Vauxhall values such as versatility and user-friendly functionality, providing up to 1,372-litres of load space and 19 storage locations.

July 2013

The Mokka also offers the latest generation Flex-Fix bicycle carrier. The user-friendly case is fully integrated in the rear underbody, functioning like a drawer and accommodating up to three bikes at a time. Brilliant, if you’re into two-wheeled outdoor family fun. The SUV is available in front-wheel and all-wheel-drive. The 4x4 system wasn’t fitted to my demo, but if I was in the market for a Mokka I’d definitely want it. As you’d expect, the extra technology ensures a high level of stability and traction, extending the car’s capabilities to more rugged environments. It’s always worth having for extra safety reasons alone. Standard features that enhanced the driving experience for me included Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control (TC) as well as Hill Start Assist (HAS). Other progressive upmarket gadgetry the Mokka brings to the table includes Advanced Adaptive Forward Lighting. This increases driving safety and includes High Beam Assist. The lights

cut a way through the dark like a laser - they really are that good. The Vauxhall Mokka range is available priced, as my test model was, from a very reasonable £15,995 - and it’s far more handsome than its unsightly rival, the Nissan Juke. PROS • Smart • Distinct • Smooth drive • Reasonably priced CONS • Slow off the mark

FAST FACTS • Max speed: 114 mph • 0-60 mph: 11.9 secs • Combined mpg: 43.5 • Engine: 1598 cc 4 cylinder 16 valve petrol • Max. power (bhp): 113 at 6000rpm • Max. torque (lb/ft): 114 at 4000rpm • CO2: 153 g/km • Price: £15,995 on the road
