Relight Your Fire A fireplace has always been seen as the heart of the home and now fireplaces can be a striking focal point in contemporary modern homes as well as traditional period properties.
By Karen Finch RHAD FSHAA FRSA, Managing Director and Audiologist at The Hearing Care Centre.
There is so much scope in style and finish for fireplaces today and one of the best places to see what is on offer is the new showroom of The Fireplace & Plaster Centre at Thetford.
If you have a loved one who lives in a care home, it is likely that they are missing out on one their most important senses: the ability to hear properly.
A successful local business since the early 1990s, they can offer the consumer over 20 years of professional experience and a wide choice of fireplaces, fires, multi-fuel and wood-burning stoves for their home. Which style would suit your home? Whether you prefer wood, marble, limestone or cast iron, experts can help you select the best fireplace to suit the style of your home. They will even carry out a site survey to ensure that your choice is suitable. In the showroom, you will find everything from period and traditional fireplaces, to more modern, contemporary styles. Multi-Fuel and Wood-Burning Stoves For a stylish alternative to a fireplace, wood burners are very popular and can potentially provide a cleaner, greener source of heat for your home. The main difference is that you can only burn smokeless coal and wood, rather than other fuels, so make sure you find a reliable, local wood fuel supplier. Electric and Gas Fires If a traditional fire seems like too much hassle, there are lots of natural looking coal effect gas fires to choose from. There is a great choice of electric fires too,

including the amazing “Opti-Myst” which is so realistic, you would think it was a real fire. Installation It is important that the installer of your fireplace is HETAS and Gas Safe registered, so they to comply with all the current building regulations. The Fireplace & Plaster Centre offers a fully registered and professional in-house installation service and flue lining, so it couldn’t be easier to transform your room.
According to the UK national charity Action on Hearing Loss, three out of four people living in a care home in England will have hearing loss that hasn’t been diagnosed or managed properly. That means a quarter of a million people in care homes in England may be having trouble hearing properly - a figure that is expected to rise over the years to a staggering 620,000 by 2032. And the phrase “not able to hear properly” hides the real damage to quality of life that hearing loss can cause. Struggling to hear what’s been said around them, people with hearing loss tire more easily and may begin to withdraw from everyday interaction because that is easier that having to ask everyone to repeat what they say or to misunderstanding the conversation. This can lead to a resident feeling isolated and the wrong assumption being made by their care workers that they are simply confused because of their age. AoHL’s study showed that care workers weren’t trained in deaf awareness and had a limited understanding of hearing aids. So even those residents who had been prescribed hearing aids, had to suffer a range of problems, including flat batteries and whistling hearing aids because their carers didn’t know how to adjust and maintain them.
So what’s to be done? One of the main AoHL recommendations was for training for care home staff so they are well-informed on how to use hearing aids, and how to adjust and maintain them. If you know of a Suffolk residential or nursing home that could benefit from such training, get in touch with me at karenfinch@ hearingcarecentre.co.uk. We need to help educate these employees, so that they can offer the very best care to our loved ones. Popular Street Fayre Returns A popular shopping street in Bury St. Edmunds is once again set to lay on their annual Street Fayre for visitors and residents alike this year. For the past 13 years the independent shopkeepers of St. John’s Street have organised the annual event, featuring stalls, street entertainment, music performances, terraces and food & drink stalls. But this year’s event was not a certainty and was in danger of not taking place at all. Richard Poole from menswear clothing shop Aubyn Davies says: “The organisation of this event takes a lot of
effort from traders and many are concentrating on how to sustain and increase business at their own individual shops. This meant that not everyone was a keen as in previous years” But Richard together with René van den Oort from Beautiful Beers conducted a survey of all the shop keepers in the street. The overwhelming majority thought the Street Fayre should go ahead and help was offered from existing and new
businesses in St. John’s Street to make sure the Fayre would go ahead. “Shop keepers are keen to create more footfall in the street, affected by the poor connection between the new arc shopping centre and other parts of the town centre. The annual Street Fayre creates a ‘feelgood’ atmosphere, improves recognition and generates more business for traders on the day and in the future” says Mr. Van den Oort. Mr. Mark Cordell, Chief Executive of Bid4Bury continues: “Bid4Bury are more than happy to support this annual event. It shows great initiative of the independent businesses of St. John’s Street who want to create an attractive event for local shoppers and visitors to the town. It shows that when people work together they can achieve great things” The St. John’s Street Fayre is planned for Saturday 22nd June 2013 with shops stalls and street entertainment starting from 10am throughout the day until 5pm.

Stop Asking For A Will! It’s difficult to decide which is worse. Thirty million people in UK without a Will, or that many of the Wills in existence are so poorly drafted they are at risk of failure in some way or another! That too many people are without a Will is a fact, and has been the case for generations. The Legal Services Board’s investigation into Will Writing also concluded that many Wills are poorly drafted by Will Writers and Solicitors. Only recently a Court condemned a solicitor drafted Will as inadequate, leaving the deceased “intestate” and the parties concerned with some very nasty problems.
STEP 3. Insist that you are provided with written advice on how best to meet your objectives, including all advantages and disadvantages.
No Will or a poor Will; both can leave families facing all sorts of nasty consequences, including:
In this way standards are forced to rise, and might also help increase the uptake of Wills because:
• Intended beneficiaries not getting a penny
1. The client is not “giving instructions”, they are asking for advice!
• Children taken into care because guardians were not appointed
2. The advice offered must be substantiated and come with a confirmation that it’s quality has been checked. Also that it is covered by adequate indemnity cover should that advice fail.
• H.M. Govt raking in millions of £’s in extra tax • Partners losing the roof over their head • People getting cash and assets that were never intended for them Result: Families lose out leaving the taxman and lawyers as the only real winners. Time for a different approach At Beauwater we introduced a new, client driven approach, and is one we believe could help resolve both issues. As its client driven we don’t have to wait for solicitors and Will Writers to implement it. The public (for once) can force the change upon us, the Will Writing Industry.
STEP 4: Only use an adviser that operates a double-check system of his/her advice by another expert, and that advice is supported by adequate indemnity insurance.
3. The client need no longer fear not knowing the subject. The client is now in control and is dictating what is to be provided. And if you want to extend the breadth and scope of that advice, you need add just three words to the end of your original statement: “ …… what you want to happen to your assets in the event of your death and your incapacity”. Many people admit to having some trepidation about approaching the “legal profession”, which might explain why so many are still without a Will? So perhaps a different approach might just make life (and death) a lot easier on everyone? Garry Streeter Asset Protection Beauwater Estate Planning and Services 01953 451930
Here’s how you can do it: STEP 1: Don’t ask the Solicitor/Will Writer to draft you a Will. STEP 2: Instead, outline what your assets are, and what you want to happen to those assets in the event of your death. Who you want to receive those assets, and who you want to be in control of everything. Mention any and all concerns/fears you may have about your property, ex-spouses, and errant children etc.
* NEWS FLASH * As we are about to go to print, the Lord Chancellor has decided NOT to regulate Will Writing Industry after years of clamour from the industry for it! The Beauwater Approach to Will Writing is now even more necessary.

Homeopathy & David Beckham! Sports injuries can vary from a minor sprain during a family game (or being a little over-enthusiastic with the grandchildren) to a major injury preventing professional sports people continuing with their career. If sport is your career or if mobility is your main concern then watching how sports personalities like David Beckham, Martina Navratilova or Boris Becker have treated their injuries for a rapid recovery is a good plan!
of Dutch medical practitioners also consider homeopathy to be effective.
When homeopathy is chosen for top sports professionals it makes sense for everyone to use it - young and old alike!
Britain’s Royal Family has sought homeopathic care from the 1830’s to the present day. George VI was so impressed with the positive effects of homeopathic remedies that he named his prize racehorse “Hypericum” after a popular homeopathic remedy for nerve injury. The Queen, who rarely takes time off due to illness after more than 60 years on the throne, is a strong believer in homeopathy, as was her Mother before her. Today, Prince Charles is an outspoken supporter of homeopathy and natural medicine and our former Prime Minister, Tony Blair, has gone on record to say that he uses homeopathic remedies for his children.
Homeopathy is so popular in Europe that it forms an integral part of everyday healthcare. In France 67% of medical practitioners consider homeopathic medicines to offer effective and cost efficient treatment. In England, 42% of physicians refer their patients for homeopathic treatment and 45%
The Hollywood Connection – Many major Hollywood stars use homeopathy to maintain their inner health and vitality as well as to help recovery. Catherine Zeta-Jones, Pamela Anderson, Tina Turner, Jane Fonda and Sir Paul McCartney to name just a few use homeopathy as part of their star lifestyle.
Don’t forget that these celebrities have access to the top injury specialists who deal with any and every imaginable injury. They simply use whichever method of treatment will affect a quick and lasting recovery for their high profile patients. If these therapists can’t deliver the goods they’re out of a job as the sports person looks for someone who can offer a speedy and full recovery.

Thetford Grammar School ...is a friendly and family based community, a high achieving co-educational day school in East Anglia, running through from pupils aged 3½ in the Junior School to the Sixth Form. We are a school of just over 300 in number, where the individual is central to our purpose. The strength of this “all through” school is that it enables us to place great emphasis on a supportive environment, one in which pupils take responsibility for themselves and for each other, as reflected in the caring way seniors work with juniors. The recent Inspection report commented that our pupils “develop into caring and responsible young people with a very positive attitude to learning, working well individually and with one another.” The Junior department is a particular strength of Thetford Grammar School where pupil progress was described as excellent in EYFS and very good in Years 1 - 6, following our most
June 2013
recent inspection. Small class sizes enable our dedicated staff to tailor learning to individual needs and a broad curriculum incorporates a range of learning opportunities both inside the classroom and outdoors. In the supportive, productive and rewarding educational environment of our Junior School, exciting and challenging learning experiences are provided for all pupils in our care. High expectations are set and pupils “approach learning with abundant enthusiasm,” resulting in a productive and successful learning environment for our youngest pupils. Academic success is at the heart of our activities. Over a five-year average, 72% of grades achieved at A level are A* to B with 100% A* to E. At GCSE, 54% of grades achieved are A* or A with 100% A* - C.
The report spoke of “articulate and confident pupils who develop their creativity and work independently, thinking logically and analytically”. The development of the whole person is also of great significance for us. Creativity is an important quality which we strive to encourage whether it be through Art, Music, Drama, Sport or indeed in any classroom. There is a full programme of extracurricular activity and we seek to blend in the traditions of hard work and extra-curricular activity with an awareness of the need to produce rounded individuals, sensitive to others and fully equipped to meet the challenges of a modern technological society. Our Sixth Form Centre combines medieval walls with modern glass and steel, the very best of both worlds and that is exactly how we see ourselves.
Each year we welcome students from other schools into our Sixth Form where we are able to provide excellent teaching and close individual support, thus enabling students to achieve their full potential. Our sixth-formers “show excellent levels of leadership and maturity” and are prepared carefully for the next stage of their lives. Our pupils come from all round the region, Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire - a testament to our popularity. But come and see for yourselves. Bring your children for a ‘taster’ day with us, as a starting point. Let them be the best judge of whether TGS is the right environment for them. We are confident they will say yes!

Would you like a new and exciting career that fits around your family life?
We pride ourselves on delivering a high level of early years childcare and education to all our children. Our nursery environment focuses on encouraging children’s independence and choice, to support their learning. We encourage exploration, investigation and fun through freedom of choice, child centred activities and adult support and interaction. The nursery environment also ensures that nursery activities and resources aid children in achieving the six Early Learning Goals (see information on the Early Years Foundation Stage). Planning for our children’s nursery education starts with the child. The Nursery team observe their key children daily and make notes on their observations in order to plan how they can further extend and support the child’s learning and development in specific areas. The Key person at the day nursery and preschool use their observations to plan the following days or weeks activities, recording both adult lead and child lead activities and ideas. Parents are encouraged to contribute
to their child’s learning though various different strategies adopted by the nursery. Children’s own work and creations are valued through discussions, displays and recognition. Staff inform parents each day what their children have been doing to enable parents to discuss and share these experiences with their child. Ofsted said: ‘The rooms are child-centered and the resources organised to help children become independent learners. The day nursery and preschool staff have a very clear understanding of how young children learn and know their key children very well. As a result they are able to plan a wide variety of activities which meet the interest of each and every child. For example, a child who shows an interest in babies has the opportunity, with peers, to visit the baby room in the nursery and talk about how babies are cared for. Through careful observations staff identify areas for development and as a result all children in the nursery make good progress.....As planning successfully incorporates parents observations from home, all children enjoy continuity in their learning.’

Norwich Businessman Launches A Sparkling Solution To Poor Uk Pension Performance… A local businessman, Siam Kidd (Director of ukBullionDirect.com), has responded to the Daily Telegraph announcement that “UK Pension performance is among the worst in the developed world”, with a pioneering new solution using a simple monthly savings plan for buying pure investment grade Silver bullion coins. Nothing electronic would work without Silver and as a result, it’s the 2nd most used commodity in the world. It turns out that there are no substitutes and planet will be totally exhausted of economically mineable Silver in 7 years. No wonder Banks, Billionaires and Countries are racing to buy this hot commodity. Until recently, you needed to buy it in large amounts and so this has not been an option for the man in the street until now. But thanks to Siam, it is now possible for anyone to buy Silver as an investment and as a DIY Pension Plan, from as little as £40 a month. Siam says “We created this with the average person in mind and mapped out what would be better than the standard ISA or pension. So now anyone can have

a DIY pension that has outpaced inflation over the last 40 years and unaffected by Interest rates or Government Policy. Also the type of Silver we use doesn’t incur any Capital Gains Tax. In fact the worse the world economy gets, the better Silver does. People remain in full control of their Silver and can cash in as much as they
wish whenever they wish. No more waiting until retirement age.”
account, which would now be worth £12,000 - less Tax.
Surely there must be a risk involved, as this all sounds too easy? Well it seems that the only risk is where to store it and how much the silver price will go up by, as ten years ago it was at £3 an ounce, and is now selling at £28 an ounce, so £100 a month ten years ago would now give you a whopping £70,000, compared with the same amount in a savings

New Honda CR-V 2.0 i-VTEC SE 2WD By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist
HONDA’s new CR-V is entirely appropriate for many motorists. It performs like a ‘standard’ car; it has the room of an estate and a good level of comfort, along with a higher driving position. But what’s changed about the ‘allnew’ CR-V? Well, for a start, it’s more handsome and this is the first time in Europe the Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) has been offered with two and four-wheel drive on the 2.0 i-VTEC model. Apart from that, the alterations aren’t massive. I mean, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Nonetheless, there are a few developments. I found out the fourth generation CR-V presents even more class, composure and civility than its predecessor.

With the seats collapsed you are able to collect, say, a washing machine from your local white-goods retailer. And, to be frank, if you’re not concerned about keeping your car in showroom condition, the CR-V is an ideal vehicle to load up with unwanted items for legal disposal at the council tip! The fresh CR-V is available with four generously equipped trim levels S, SE, SR and EX. I took the SE for a drive. The model’s intelligent multi info display, idle stop, dual zone climate control, and cruise control make motoring easy. The fitting of hill start assist is particularly useful in undulating surroundings, and the SUV’s rain sensing auto wipers and dusk sensing auto lights successfully defy dark, drizzly commutes.
And with environmental issues of rising magnitude, Honda’s in vogue 2.0 i-VTEC engine emits appreciably less CO2 than before.
The SE gives your hands a virtual massage with its leather steering wheel and gear stick, and the power lumbar support on the driver’s seat does a good job of keeping your back in shape.
You still get the larger-than-it-looks cabin; with the rear seats in place the boot volume is an airy 589 litres, and this extends to a vast 1669 litres when the seats are folded down.
Other significant features on my CR-V included an auto dim rear view mirror,
Visit: www.carwriteups.co.uk front and rear parking sensors, rear view parking camera, one-touch power windows, electrically folding door mirrors, a six-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, front fog lights, and an alarm. The brand new CR-V’s petrol engine powers along very gracefully and, although its performance won’t get your adrenal gland working overtime, it’s certainly not lethargic.
PROS • Full-bodied • Classy • Practical • Roomy CONS • Few thrills FAST FACTS
It won’t take corners on rails, but there’s no undue body roll either. Certainly, the Swindon-made SUV feels full-bodied, and with Honda’s standard vehicle stability assist, anti-lock braking system, electronic brake force distribution, and brake assist you’re assured of a safe ride - just not a thrilling one.
• Max speed: 118 mph • 0-62 mph: 10 secs • Combined mpg: 39.2 • Engine: 1997 cc 4 cylinder 16 valve petrol • Max. power (bhp): 153 at 6500 rpm • Max. torque (lb/ft): 141 at 4300 rpm • Max. towing weight (braked) 1700 kg • CO2: 168 g/km • Price: £22,895 on the road
But how does this translate in the real world? It means that if you are a parent with a gaggle of young children, you can hurl not just one, but several buggies in - along with a week’s worth of supermarket shopping.
