Hearing Care Practice ‘Highly Commended’ At National Awards Ceremony. One of Suffolk’s leading hearing care practices, received national praise this week, from a leading health governing body. The Hearing Care Centre, based locally at Mount Farm GP Surgery, in Bury St Edmunds, was ‘highly commended’ in the rehibilitation category, at the glitzy British Health Trades Association Excellence Awards. The evening, which was held at the Guoman Tower Hotel, in London, was compered by TV journalist, presenter and newsreader, Angela Rippon OBE. The BHTA represents over 450 company members, many of which are the largest and most influential in the healthcare industry. The Hearing Care Centre, which has 18 centres across Norfolk and Suffolk, was praised for its distinctive focus on customer care, rather than sales figures. The judges noted its continued growth over the past 13 years, as well as its financial strength and, most importantly, its investments in the training of its staff. Ray Hodgkinson, Director General of the BHTA, congratulated the team at The
Hearing Care Centre, and commented that the commendation was richly deserved. “The awards we present each year are given only after a rigorous process involving a panel of judges and the winners represent excellence in what is an important and growing marketplace. Private hearing care is one of the fastest growing and most important market sectors and one in which excellence in product design and customer service really does mean a great deal to the customers, many of whom rely on our member companies to maintain their independence.” Hearing Care Centre Managing Director, Karen Finch, who was presented with the award said: “Being presented with the award, particularly in front of so many members of the industry, was a real achievement and reflects the hard work by everyone throughout the company.”

Stacey & Partners Do you have anything to declare? We would associate these words with Customs and Excise, but increasingly HM Revenue and Customs are asking individual taxpayers this question, says Mark Wallace from Stacey & Partners.
Examples of task forces and campaigns include:• Private “at home” tutors and teachers • Hobby income, such as EBay traders
They have launched “taskforces” to route out individuals not paying or declaring income tax on casual earnings, and are becoming increasingly active in this area. If you receive any income, which is not taxed, then it needs to be declared to HM Revenue and Customs, usually by completing a self-assessment tax return. Tax returns for the year ended 5th April 2011, containing income to that date, are due to be submitted to HM Revenue and Customs by 31st January 2012. If sent into HMRC late, substantial fines can be incurred, and so it is important you contact H M Revenue and Customs now if you think you have anything to declare. There could be fines of approximately £1,200 for returns submitted very late, and then interest on top of that.

Fuel Costs And Hassle Gives Coach Holidays New Customers A new generation of holidaymakers are discovering the total relaxation offered by coach touring, says a local travel company. Plush modern coaches, all-in bargain prices and imaginative destinations are casting off the old image of bluerinse ladies on charabancs, according to Simonds Coach & Travel, based in Diss: “Not only that, but we’re finding more and more ‘empty-nesters’ are fed up with airport delays and turning to the door-to-door comfort of coach holidays,” says Andy Burrows, Commercial Manager at Simonds. The company is seeing demand growing for holidays as varied as visiting Spanish vineyards and Highland safaris. With holidaymakers turning away from flights to the sun to avoid twohour check-in queues and poor Euro exchange rates. Instead, they’re taking a leaf out of their parents’ book and opting for UK holidays where they can put their feet up. “They are starting to realise that you meet more people
travelling with a group and get great value for money,” said Mr Burrows. “Most good coach holidays include a taxi from your front door to the coach so there’s nothing to do except chat, snooze and watch the scenery go by.” Simonds uses 3-star and 4-star hotels, includes dinner and excursions in the price and – unlike national operators – heads straight for the hotel after local pick-ups: “It removes all the stress of travelling so you get to your resort relaxed.” Among holidays offered this year by Simonds are trips to Northern Spain’s vineyards and beaches, a holiday to Floriade 2012 - the gardening festival held in Holland once every ten years - a Scottish ‘Lochs and Isles’ tour with a lovely rail journey, and a Christmas cruise up the Rhine. Call 01379 647300 for a free brochure, or visit www.simonds.co.uk and book on-line.
Coach holiday facts • Per passenger, coaches use around half the amount of fuel used by trains and a quarter the fuel used by a car • Many coach holidays include a pickup - often by taxi or minibus - from your front door. Simonds provides this service • Many modern coaches have more legroom than planes • Coach travel is seven times safer than going by car • Research which saw holidaymakers going to Paris fitted with heart rate
monitors found that those going by car, Eurostar and plane were much more stressed than coach passengers [Travel Trade Gazette/ Leger Holidays, 2008] • Within reason, there are no luggage weight limits on coach holidays • Simonds has pick-up points in Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft, Beccles, Norwich, Diss, Bury St Edmunds, Thetford, Newmarket and Ipswich, among other East Anglian towns and villages. For further details and interviews, please contact Andy Burrows on 01379 647300.

Usually clients can be seen quickly if the situation is of an urgent nature. I can work on any issue presented offering full support for as long as is necessary. Can you tell us about why Hypnotherapy is such a beneficial treatment? Hypnotherapy is a wonderful relaxing experience that taps into your natural Alfa brain state, the one you enter into when you day dream or focus intently on a particular task like reading, there are no side effects other than positive ones and a hypnotherapist cannot make a person do anything against there own will. It can help a person to quickly resolve many difficult issues deep down in the subconscious where the problem lies from fears and phobia’s, anxiety, depression, panic attacks to giving up unwanted habits like smoking, dealing with weight loss, eating disorders to insomnia. Hypno-analysis which is a combination of hypnotherapy and psychotherapy is an advanced therapeutic technique that is beneficial for those with unresolved past crisis, loss and trauma in their lives. You should always make sure that the therapist you see is registered with an appropriate governing body like the GHRGeneral Hypnotherapy Register.
This highly successful system includes the latest techniques in Clinical Hypnotherapy, Nutrition and Motivational Coaching to help you achieve your goals. This is not a diet but a change of lifestyle that my client’s embrace it. The HypnuSlim program is a proven success that is recommended by top celebrities to doctors within the medical profession. For those who’ve worked hard all their lives, maintaining independence is particularly important - especially when it comes to mealtimes. Wiltshire Farm Foods is one company that’s keen to help those who can’t get out and about as much, so they can eat well and look after themselves. Established for more than 20 years, Wiltshire Farm Foods creates and delivers a delicious range of frozen meals that can be cooked in minutes. team of nutritionists and award-winning chefs in their Wiltshire kitchens.
Most dishes take 8-12 minutes in the microwave or 35 minutes in the oven.
Once cooked, the meals are placed into handy trays that fit easily into the freezer, then frozen almost immediately to lock in the freshness.
As they are cooked in their trays, there is no preparation, no pots and pans, just delicious meals that you can enjoy in your own time.
Convenience is a key part of the Wiltshire Farm Foods offering. All meals can be ordered over the phone or online.
Maintaining independence has never been easier.
They’re then delivered by a friendly, local delivery driver, who is always happy to put meals away in the freezer if preferred. With the freezer stocked up, you know that a hot meal is only ever a few minutes away.
Recently, national treasure Ronnie Corbett joined Wiltshire Farm Foods for a TV and magazine campaign promoting the delicious meals - and the independence they bring. The TV adverts also feature Edith and Eric, who talk to Ronnie about the benefits of the service. If you’ve not seen them yet, keep a look out.

CARING FOR THE ELDERLY Undernutrition In The Elderly
Able Community Care
Undernutrition is becoming increasingly prevalent in the ever-growing elderly population.
Our services are provided to people of all ages who want to remain living in their own homes and community rather than moving into a residential care setting.
Is poor nutrition just an inevitable consequence of ageing, or are there reasons which health professionals can address to deal with this problem? A national survey of older people in private household found that: Over half reported long standing illness or disability. One in five had difficulty seeing, even with glasses. One in ten were unable to walk down the road or manage stairs. One in five had been seen by a hospital doctor in the preceding three months. Half of the women and a quarter of the men aged 85 years and over were not able to cook a main meal alone. Only one in ten received ready meals delivered to the door Not only do older people have practical disadvantages but they also have different nutritional requirements to that of the normal adult population. With increased age, people become more vulnerable to malnutrition for many reasons including these listed: Swallowing problems from a stroke, Parkinson’s disease or other neurological disorder, Worsening dentition and periodontal disease, ill fitting dentures, Candida, Loss of use of hands from a stroke, Parkinson’s disease or other neurological disorder, Isolation - limited access to shops, Poverty, Taste changes, Less smell perception and reduced appetite. All these above risk factors may affect intake, digestion, absorption, utilisation and metabolism of food and nutrients. It becomes increasingly important for improved quality of the diet, as the total amount of food falls with age. Oral and pharyngeal health In the Western World dental health is improving in all ages including the elderly who are more likely to retain their teeth. However, tooth decay still often goes unrecognised in some individuals. Also with malnutrition this can lead to a
change in mouth shape, so a person with dentures may find they are not fitting properly. Oral candida is frequently missed on nutritional assessments if the individual does not present with the typical white plaques. Thrush can lead to significant taste changes and reduced enjoyment, therefore, enthusiasm for food. Many neurological problems may cause dysphagia, the most common being cerebrovascular accident, and if the individual isn’t provided with appropriate textures and advice, food intake is likely to be compromised.
Is a Norfolk company which has been providing live-in care services since 1980.
Over the past 31 years we have provided over 50 million hours of care in people’s homes from the North of Scotland down to The Channel Islands. In addition to providing care on a long term basis, we also provide respite care for family carers who need a wellearned break, for people who want to go away from home, on holiday or to visit relatives. We provide care to people with a terminal illness who want to stay at home and run care schemes for families who wish to share the care; for example, we can provide one or two weeks of
care, then the family the next period, on a regular basis. In 2012 the social care situation is hard to understand. Every day another news item complicates the issues and many people lose sight of their entitlements and become anxious and worried. The Able Community Care website at www.uk-care.com provides comprehensive information and there is an option to sign up for our free, weekly care Newsflash. Approximately 1000 people have already signed up to receive this each week in order that they can keep up to date with information that may affect them or their family.
Gut function Changes in the gut microflora can affect digestion and absorption of nutrients. With a reduced immune system there may be bacterial overgrowth in the gut, or conversely, the use of antibiotics may reduce the beneficial gut flora, leading to diarrhoea or constipation. With the ageing process there is also reduced efficiency of motility of gut muscle. Isolation With increasing age there is greater chance of being alone (death of spouse and adult children), and housebound individuals are more vulnerable of nutritional inadequacy. They may depend on ‘meals on wheels’ and store cupboard foods. It is particularly a problem in the winter months as it is harder to get to shops. Upon retirement there is also a considerably reduced income for the elderly who are forced to shop locally where food items are generally more expensive and there is reduced selection. As more supermarkets are relocating out of towns it makes it harder for the elderly to access them.
