New Celebrity Patron For Suffolk Based Rehab Charity
New Hearing Aid Recycling Scheme Launched Local hearing care specialists, The Hearing Care Centre, have this month launched their brand new appeal to help thousands of hard-of-hearing individuals who have limited financial resources across the World.
The Suffolk based drugs and alcohol rehabilitation charity, Focus21, has announced that singer and DJ Boy George is to join Russell Brand and Davina McCall as its latest celebrity patron. The announcement was made at Focus12’s 14th annual reunion, held yesterday at the Apex in Bury St Edmunds, where those who have been helped by the charity came together to celebrate their recovery. The event was attended by over 400 clients, ex-clients and supporters of Focus12, including patrons Boy George and Davina McCall. Speaking at the reunion, held at the Apex in Bury St Edmunds, Chief Executive, Chip Somers said: “George has long since been an active supporter of the work we do, and so to ask him to become a patron seemed a natural progression. We are absolutely delighted he has agreed to come on board, and are thrilled to welcome his fresh ideas and perspective. There is no doubt that with out the continued and loyal support of Davina and Russell over the years, we wouldn’t be stood here today celebrating what amounts
to over 260 years of Focus recovery in this room.” Davina McCall, who made the announcement at the reunion added: “I couldn’t be more thrilled, George is a great advert for recovery and a really lovely bloke.” Boy George spoke to the crowd about his own battle with addiction, and how amazing he has found his recovery through total abstinence. He said: “Recovery is a beautiful thing – seeing the people you love getting the colour back in their skin, the life back in their eyes, is fantastic I am really looking forward to making some serious money and raising the profile of Focus12.” A raffle held at the event raised £1700 for the charity, which is struggling to survive following the loss of £136,000 worth of annual funding from Suffolk County Council.

representatives. The World Health Organisation estimates that 278 million people worldwide have moderate to profound hearing loss in both ears. Yet, current annual production of hearing aids is estimated to meet less than 10% of global need. The poor are especially affected because they are unable to afford the preventative care necessary to avoid hearing loss, or hearing aids to improve their hearing.
The Suffolk Hearing Aid Recycling Scheme, which has been created in co-operation with Lions International, requires members of the public to donate unwanted, unused or broken hearing instruments, no matter how old or in what condition.
The Hearing Care Centre, who offer local, private hearing care services in Suffolk, have established well over a dozen donations points across the county, including locally at Mount Farm GP Surgery (Moreton Hall), Bury St Edmunds and Spectacular Opticians (High Street), Newmarket.
These hearing aids are then recycled, repaired or refurbished and sent to countries in need by Lions International

BURY ST. EDMUNDS News
Stacey & Partners HMRC have had problems issuing Statements of Accounts in July as they ran out of paper! Says Mark Wallace of Chartered Accountants, Stacey & Partners – and Small businesses should have the correct paperwork in order to pay dividends. HMRC have announced that the delayed statements were sent out in August. Most importantly, HMRC says that those taxpayers who receive their SA statements in August will not be charged interest provided they pay the second 2011/12 payment on account (which would normally be due on 31 July) by 27 September 2011!! Make sure you have the correct paperwork for dividends. It is not unusual for small owner businesses to pay dividends, as a part of withdrawing funds from a company. It is important that the correct paperwork is in place, to ensure that the payments cannot be challenged by HMRC. There are a number of things that need to be considered in order to ensure that they are correctly declared. 1. If interim dividends are being paid, you should ensure that the Articles of Association allow the Directors the right to pay them, as some older companies do not have these provisions.
2. In respect of payments of salary, H M Revenue & Customs sometimes argue that the payments are payment on account of salary rather than a loan, or dividends. Payment on account is one where the Company has no right to recovery, it is simply agreed to pay some of the salary already earned but not due for payment - for example, payment of two weeks’ salary half way through the month when employees are normally paid at month end. If the Company has a right of recovery, it is not a payment on account but a loan. Make sure you do not get caught out! 3. It is important that all interim dividends are supported by some form of documentation, such as a pro forma minute. We have suitable vouchers that can be sent to clients if this is a problem. 4. In some cases, dividends can be illegal. This is where a company makes payments in excess of profits. In such cases, should the company go into liquidation, the liquidator has the right to obtain repayment from shareholders or Directors.

Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre Strikes Gold by Reducing Carbon Emissions. Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre, run by Abbeycroft Leisure, has been awarded Gold Level for the Suffolk Carbon Charter after reducing its emissions and environmental impacts. Haverhill Leisure Centre has also achieved recognition of its environmental efforts and has been awarded Bronze Level. The Carbon Charter is awarded to companies that are monitoring and reducing their carbon emissions. The charter provides public recognition of companies and organisations taking vital steps towards creating a greener county. The Gold Charter is only awarded to companies that, in addition to having achieved significant reductions in their carbon emissions, are also using their position to influence their communities, whether through their supply chain, customers or staff. To aid a reduction in carbon emissions and meet certain criteria for the Carbon Charter, Abbeycroft Leisure has written and adopted an environmental policy, future carbon emission reduction targets have been set, and an action plan on use of energy and steps to reduce waste drawn up. A quarterly staff news letter has been launched to engage staff, encourage them to save energy, and raise the awareness of environmental issues. There have been internal housekeeping improvements and there is now more efficient use of heating, lighting, water usage and air conditioning. A number of energy audits have been undertaken each focusing on specific areas where there could be potential savings made in the short and long term. The viability and energy saving qualities of pool covers were investigated within one of the audits and as a result new covers have recently been installed for the main and teaching pools at the Bury

St Edmunds Leisure Centre, which greatly reduces heat loss and evaporation from the pool water. As the Leisure pool is a freeform pool, a solid cover cannot be fitted. Therefore Abbeycroft also plans to install equipment which forms a ‘liquid pool cover’ for the Leisure pool. The liquid cover is not as effective as a solid cover, however it does still reduce heat loss and water evaporation from the pool water by forming a ‘skin’ on the pool surface when the pool is not in use. Simon Ginders-Coxshall, General Manager, said: “We are so thrilled to be accredited to gold level. We have made significant reductions in our carbon emissions as a Centre in the last three years and we take the environmental impact of what we do very seriously. We will now continue to improve and look at other ways in which we can continue to uphold the values of the Charter.” The Charter was developed as part of the ANSWER Project, with the support of ERDF through the Interreg IVB North Sea Region Programme. Ned Harrison, ANSWER Project Manager on behalf of the Carbon Charter panel, said: “The audit stated that ‘the organisation has an excellent environmental management system in place (almost a full EMS) which has been fully adopted and is being driven forward by the General Manager. This ensures continual improvement and monitoring of environmental performance throughout the organisation. The Centre has improved on its baseline carbon footprint of 2007/8 every year and is continuing to investigate and implement measures to reduce its emissions and environmental impacts and to engage with staff and the public.”

Nest Residential Lettings And Management Rental Prices Rising due to Limited Supply. If you are considering putting your property on the market for rental now is a good time. Due to the high deposits required by mortgage lenders this is preventing people from purchasing, therefore demand has increased for rental accommodation.
As well as a healthy price being obtained the limited supply also means that properties are rented a lot quicker, meaning that void periods are kept to a minimum.
This was let on the first viewing and achieved the full asking price of ÂŁ750pcm without a problem.
This sized property is extremely popular for families and couples at the moment; Nest Residential Lettings and Management therefore if you have a 2 or 3 bed house have recently let a 3 bed semi-detached with a garden, then you could expect a house in Southwold. rapid let for a healthy rental figure.
Nest Lettings are always looking for new properties to let out in order to meet increased demand; and due to their independence are able to dedicate time to providing each property with the attention it requires to secure a quick and successful let. Therefore, if you have a property to let and would like any advice then please contact the team at any time on 01603 621180 or office@letnest.co.uk.
As this greater demand is met with a limited supply of rental properties available, this has resulted in a dramatic rise in rental prices in the last few months. In East Anglia specifically they rose 2.75 per cent in June, taking the average rents in East Anglia to ÂŁ581 per month. Although this is a negative for applicants searching for rental accommodation, this is good news for potential landlords looking to put their property on the open lettings market.

Homes & Gardens Supreme Bathrooms Water Saving, take a SHOWER or a BATH? In response to the official drought in East Anglia, environment secretary Caroline Spelmen has already said that everyone should take a shower rather than a bath to save water. “We are doing all we can to reduce impact on agriculture and wildlife, but everyone can play their part” she said. She added “Households know how to use less water and everyone can do their bit to use water more wisely, not only through the summer but throughout the year.” Supreme Bathrooms have looked at their products in mind and have welcomed the call to use showers rather than baths. Its been acknowledged for sometime that showers are far more economical than
baths in terms of water use with a five minute shower using about a third of the water required for a bath. This can save 50 litres of water every time. With our new digital showers which have an eco setting to save water without compromising the quality of the shower and our eco toilet cisterns which will also save water and money, Supreme Bathrooms are getting ahead of the game. Taking a bath out and installing a quality British made shower enclosure with clear shield glass to prevent lime scale build up and an eco digital shower will not only save water and money, but it will also transform your bathroom into a modern and spacious room for you to enjoy.
10 Dispatch October/November 2011
Plus the use of wetwall panels instead of tiles within the shower will also save time and money when the common problem of mildew on grout starts to show. And don’t forget at Supreme Bathrooms we offer our customers the best sourced products from across Europe (Italy, Spain) and more importantly from Great Britain. Quality products at competitive prices is a key selling point for Supreme Bathrooms but more importantly we offer and back the products up with a wealth of experience, unlimited advice and a follow on customer service second to none. CARING FOR THE ELDERLY Able Community Care Ways To Make Tasks Easier Around The Home
Since 1980 Able Community Care has been providing live-in care services throughout Mainland UK and the Channel Islands.
As you get older you may find it harder to manage in your home. This guide from Age UK looks at the adaptations and equipment that are available and explains how to obtain them. Access to your home If you are having difficulty getting in and out of your property there are ways to make it easier. If you have difficulty climbing the steps leading to your front door, you could have a rail installed. If you are a wheelchair user, you may need to have a ramp installed to enable you to reach the front door. This may require alterations to the porch or front step. Moving around your home If you are having difficulty moving around a
property, think about the risks related to floor surfaces, clutter and trip hazards. If you use a wheelchair, do you have enough room to manoeuvre your chair around each room and from room to room? If the ability to turn from a corridor into a room is inhibited by the door and corridor width, it may be possible to widen the door frame or to re-hang the door. In the kitchen There are various pieces of equipment that can assist with preparing and consuming food and drink. If you can only use one hand or find it hard to grip or carry, there are tools such as spike boards to allow one-handed vegetable peeling, kettle tippers, widehandled cutlery, tap turners, non-slip table mats, bottle and jar openers.
12 Dispatch October/November 2011
Our clients, who range in age from their early twenties to centenarians, have all chosen to remain living in their own home rather than moving into a residential care home. When we ask our clients why they have chosen to have a live-in care package rather than move into a home where they could also have 24 hour care, we receive comments such as: “I can have independence in my own home. I can be spontaneous, if the sun is shining and I fancy being pushed round the park I can go.” “Having 1:1 care means that no day is the same. When I was more able I could choose how to spend my days. Having live-in care means I can still do that.” “My family wanted me to stay in my
own home, but they were worried about me on my own in case I fell. Having live-in care in my home eliminates their worries.” “Being young I enjoy sports, clubbing and going to the pub. My live-in care scheme allows me to have the opportunity to participate, at any time of the day or even night!” Able Community Care has provided just under fifty million hours of care and we have been able to help thousands of people and their families.
