In 2014 there will be regional and national commemorations of the start of World War One.
November meeting.
Someone has brought it to my attention that, for whatever reason, many names (from both wars) were not included on the Diss war memorial. It would be a nice gesture to create an extra panel to remember these men, and maybe women, by.
The Conservation people at South Norfolk Council say that no planning permission would be necessary. Nobody knows who is responsible for the war memorial. Nor does anyone know what the criteria for inclusion were. Some memorials contain names of those who served and survived, while some It would be a good way for the town to do feature civilians. Why are women seldom something to tie in with all the national mentioned; and what about people who died commemorations; and we could have a in wartime accidents? I have spoken to Keith Rackham of Perfitts; and they would be glad to create something, at cost price. Funding will be available for county WW1 events, as it was for this year’s American projects. We had no trouble in getting £250 for our contribution. I have notified the Town Clerk and the Parochial Church Council. I imagine some sort of diocesan permission might be needed.

At November’s meeting the guest speaker was Professor Richard Wilson who told the story of one of Norfolk’s most famous murders. The crime with its complicated history and characters could easily have been a work of fiction from novelists such as Charles Dickens or Wilkie Collins but was in fact a true story that took place in 1848 at Stanfield Hall near Wymondham. For many years Stanfield Hall an 800 acre estate owned by the Jermy family had been fraught with problems concerning its direct line of title, early death, childless marriages and complicated wills were all part of Stanfield Hall’s history. In 1848 forged documents and debts were added to the mix which culminated one evening in the violent deaths of two members of the Jermy family being shot dead and several members of the household being wounded. The chief suspect was the land agent and local tenant farmer James Rush who was in debt to the Jermys’ and being unable to repay his mortgage feared his land would be repossessed. Known in the
area to be something of a hot-head and a trouble-maker Rush was quickly arrested and taken to Norwich. His trial held in 1849 soon became a sensation fuelled by the fact that it was covered by the national newspapers and that Rush had made the decision to represent himself in court. Although no murder weapon was found at the time, much of the prosecution’s evidence came from staff at the Hall who had identified Rush and from his housekeeper who described his behaviour when he returned home later that same evening. Despite Rush’s attempts to persuade the jury of his innocence speaking for periods in excess of 10 hours at a time it took them only 10 minutes to find him guilty. When Rush was hanged at Norwich Castle two weeks later his execution attracted a crowd of over 20,000 many of whom had arrived from London in specially chartered trains. Diss Decorative & Fine Arts Society The History of the Long Case Clock. Expert chimes with Diss Arts Society. Former Consultant, Director of Public Heath and now renowned Horologist, Colin Lattimore, enthralled a full audience in Royden Village hall for the November lecture of Diss Decorative & Fine Arts Society [DDFAS]. His complete summarised history of timekeeping started with the earliest evidence of sundials & Egyptian water clocks. He then moved through huge medieval monastic timepieces to more recognisable clocks with two hands, chimes and dials. Colin’s knowledge of his topic was wrapped in a lively and amusing narrative and each step of the journey towards household clocks was explained with contextual stories. Although Dr. Lattimore clearly fully understood clocks and timekeeping, he did not dwell on technical detail in presenting the history that led to the English Long
Case Clock. He traced the development of the latitudinal calculation and naval chronometers and on to the Standard time of the Victorian railways. From there, seamlessly, to illustrating the changes in house clock ownership from the show-off plutocrats in their stately homes to the later cut down Long Cases in the humbler houses of the nineteenth century. Concluding with a lively question and answer session, Colin Lattimore delivered an excellent performance and none of his audience will look at a Grandfather’s clock in the same way again! The first lecture of 2013 will be on Tuesday, 15th January When Annie Gray’s lecture will be “Mrs Beeton presents........” Roydon Village Hall from 1.30pm. Tea & Coffee is served before the presentation and there is ample car parking. For more details on lectures and membership, visit www.dissdfas.org.uk.

Diss U3A December Meeting. In place of a guest speaker the December meeting took the form of an in-house debate with members of the discussion group proposing two motions to the audience.
we can find something else to bring a little cheer to the long dark days before the turn of the New Year, Christmas will have to suffice.
The motions were “we should embrace the digital age” and “should we continue to celebrate Christmas”.
In conclusion it was felt that by letting common sense prevail and selecting the best bits of both the digital age and the Christmas holiday the benefits could be enjoyed by all.
Both motions were argued with valid points being raised on both sides but when put to the vote it seems many would prefer a warm handshake to a digital embrace.

Apprenticeship Scheme For Diss There are two reasons why 1966 was a memorable year for me. The first you can probably guess because it was the year that England won the World Cup. The second however is more personal; I failed the 11+ exam. It was an act of protest, intended to annoy a very pushy parent. But that act of rebellion meant I was written off by the education system and sent to a mediocre secondary modern school. From the moment I walked in the building I realised that this was a school for failures. We were there to be kept out of mischief, off the streets and prepared for a life of work. It was assumed that we would not achieve and so any ambition was quickly quelled. I only started learning when I started earning. I could see the relevance to learning things that would help me grow my career. Of course I also had to work hard to overcome the self-limiting beliefs and crushing lack of self-esteem my childhood had left me with. Now in middle age I am considered by many to be a high achiever.

I have an IQ of 155 and currently writing my 17th book. I have started and sold companies, campaigned for the establishment of Norfolk Community Foundation, now the county’s largest local grant maker and speak at conferences around the UK. I describe myself today as an author and social entrepreneur.
This is how it works:
Which brings me to the purpose of this article: You see I know that not everybody is cut out for an academic education. Not everybody wants to go to University, incur significant debt and have no guarantee of job on graduation. I also know from working for more than 20 years in the small business world, that the most rewarding jobs are usually those with a small business.
• We find apprenticeship qualification that meet the needs of the businesses and match the interests of the youngsters -most will be 16-17yrs old;
So I have found a way to make it easy for small businesses and young people to connect and create those jobs. Apprenticeships have been around for a long time and have probably changed dramatically since you last thought about them.
• Groups of small businesses in a market town decide to work with me to grow some new jobs for local young people; • I find a sponsor, willing to employ the youngsters and subsidise their wages;
• The sponsor invoices businesses the four days a week the apprentices will be working with them - this can cost them as little as £110 per week; (the apprentices earn around £135 per week) The challenge and that both business owners and youngsters will be accepting (to qualify for the sponsorship) will be to work together to grow a job that will give the apprentice a future and business greater profitability. It has to be good for both.
There will be others around Norfolk starting next year. If you would like to know more follow the link from my website www.robertashton.co.uk give me a call on 01953 605000.

Newman & Co Real Time Information (RTI). Most employers will soon be receiving a letter from HMRC informing them of the new regulations for submission of payroll information that from April will be mandatory for all small businesses and other entities employing staff. Submission of payroll information will need to be made electronically on or before payments are made to employees and the information employers hold relating to their staff must match HMRC’s records if submission difficulties are to be avoided. It seems that HMRC are also hoping to have ironed out any teething problems with the new system before April, from the trials that they have undertaken. We cannot, therefore, expect a soft approach to penalties and interest. However, HMRC will know exactly how much PAYE and NIC they are owed each time a submission is made so that we can expect swift action by their
debt collection department if this is not paid by the due date. All in all it means that in the months before April, employers need to review their current payroll processing solution and assess whether it is suitable for this significant change. Tax Return Deadline The deadline for the electronic filing of 2011-12 self-assessment personal tax returns is 31st January 2013. If you missed the 31st October deadline for filing paper returns you can still file electronically and ensure no penalty is incurred. You can file your tax return online, either by using the free HMRC provided software or via your accountant. Wayne Goddard FCCA (Director of Newman & Co. Chartered Accountants)

Don’t Suffer In Silence‌. Domestic Abuse is happening every day in every part of the UK. Whether you know it or not either you or someone you know will have experienced Domestic Abuse at some point in their life. Around 750,000 children each year are affected by Domestic Abuse and it is believed that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men will experience some form of Domestic Abuse in their lives. However clients of Jackamans are seen as individuals and not statistics. Domestic Abuse does not have to be physically hurting someone; it can be by verbally bullying them, controlling what they spend their money on, monitoring whom they speak to or isolating them from friends or family. There is never an excuse for Domestic Abuse, it is a course of behaviour done on purpose to control and intimidate someone in a relationship or from a past relationship, sometimes even within the same family. At Jackamans we understand how frightening it is to come forward through fear of what might happen and concern of not being believed. We pride ourselves in understanding that the impact on the
abused person and their families can have devastating consequences and we seek to make things better. Our specialist team is highly trained in dealing with all forms of Domestic Abuse and children matters. We are passionate about what we do and help to support our clients throughout the whole legal process as well as liaising with other professional bodies to take the pressure off our clients at difficult times. We have the experience and knowledge to give our clients immediate and confidential advice and support and take appropriate actions to support their case. The courts offer protection to those that need it and have the power to make Non-Molestation orders (injunctions) that can protect against any further violence, threats of violence or intimidation. It is a criminal offence to break an injunction. Jackamans recognises how serious Domestic Abuse is and in certain cases
can take emergency action to obtain protective orders to safeguard and protect people who are at serious risk of immediate harm without the abuser having any knowledge or indication of the action taken against them. It may also be possible to apply for a court order removing a partner from the home and to order them not to return or to go within a specified distance of it. Our team specialises in other areas of Family Law such as Private Law children matters; Residence, (deciding where a child should live); Contact (visitation with another parent); Specific Issue (deciding a school, medical treatment, religion); Prohibited Steps (deciding where a child should or should not go); Public Law Children (care proceedings with the Local Authority).

comercrawley The personal injury lawyers. Your questions answered…… Question: I recently took my young son ice skating at a local tourist attraction. My son was injured when he was knocked over by another skater and then when he was trying to get up another skater ran over his hand with his ice skate. It seemed to me that there were too many people on the ice and that some of the skaters were very experienced whereas my son and I and others were very inexperienced. Could my son claim compensation for what happened to him? Answer: Your son will be able to successfully make a claim for compensation if he can prove that he was injured because of someone else’s negligence or breach of some other legal duty that gives rise to a claim for compensation. It is unlikely to be an option to pursue a claim against either of the other skaters as even if it was possible to prove that they acted negligently, they are not likely to have insurance cover and may not have

the financial resources to pay for your son’s compensation and any legal costs. It may however be possible to successfully pursue a claim for compensation against the organisers of the ice skating activity. Under the Occupiers Liability Act 1957 (and also under the law of negligence), the organisers owe a duty of care to ensure that those using the ice rink are reasonably safe. In seeking to ensure that skaters are reasonably safe the organisers should ensure that a safe number of people use the ice rink at any one time and also take into account other relevant considerations such as the age and level of experience of the skaters using the rink. The organisers should also exercise a certain level of instruction and supervision of those using the ice rink. This includes ensuring that all skaters skate in accordance with the safety rules for using the rink. They should also have staff members on the ice who can promptly come to the assistance of anyone who
has fallen over and provide appropriate instruction to ensure that skaters are as safe as is reasonably possible. If you have a question for our legal advice team you
can submit it by email: enquiries@comercrawley.co.uk or in writing to: Chancery House, Victoria Road, Diss, Norfolk IP22 4HZ.

Attleborough Town Council Noticeboard Monthly Update. Christmas Market The town’s traditional Christmas market was held on Sunday 2nd December and as usual was very well attended on a crisp wintry day. The Christmas Lights switch on is an integral part of the day and this year was performed by Radio Norwich DJ Tina James. Attleborough firefighters raised money for the Fire Brigade Benevolent Fund and they also held a sponsored engine pull from the station in Thieves Lane to Queens Square. In addition there were many craft stalls which did a roaring trade. Town Crier Attleborough now has an official Town Crier after the Council agreed on 3rd December that Mr Melvyn Hurn, a town resident, be appointed Attleborough Town
Crier. Mr Ivan Fryett of Morley Aviaries kindly donated the Town Crier’s bell and uniform and also undertook to pay for the ongoing maintenance of these items. Cllr Karen Pettitt said “We are very lucky to have been given the opportunity to have our own town crier. Mr Hurn has offered his services for the town and he will be most happy to be in attendance for any civic or town event”. Attleborough Thursday Market The Council is presently undertaking an informal review of the market looking amongst other things at the possibility of an alternative venue for the Thursday attraction which is presently held on Queens Square car park. It is anticipated that the matter will be taken to Council for consideration in the New Year.
Town Festival The Council agreed to form a working group to oversee the holding of a Town Festival next year. Normally the Festival would be held in “even numbered” years but last year the Queen’s Jubilee took precedence and no Festival was
organised. It is expected that the 2013 Festival will be held over a weekend in September and would showcase the talents of local clubs and community groups in venues across the town, including the Town Hall, Connaught Hall and the church.

production, Tom Key and Jon Moule, have embarked on unexplored ground with a brand new to the region show.
The story of Sleeping Beauty is well known by young and old, but this production, set 100 years after the fateful prick on the finger, gives a slightly different perspective of the classic tale.
“We wanted to challenge ourselves as a drama group at the same time as bringing something fresh, new and exciting to our audience” says Tom Key.
With a combination of shadow puppetry and spells cast by the Good and Bad Fairy’s, the audience (and characters!) are transported back and forth through the 100 year time span, piecing together pieces of the puzzle in order to foil evil Carabosse’s plan. But what makes this production so special? Audiences can expect ‘laugh a second’ scenes (including a rather messy one!), not one but TWO dames, a Gorilla, a Horse and music with a blend of classic and modern chart hits. Directors of the

We have had such a great time putting this production together, from the music to lighting, to sound effects to costumes, the work that has gone in to it by all concerned is truly magnificent. Attleborough Bible Society Verse and thought for the month- January 2013. With the New Year come hopes of a fresh start, a fresh start that so often proves to be disappointing. The Bible warns us against putting our hopes in any one apart from God Himself. He alone is a sure refuge and will never disappoint us. Invite Jesus into our hearts and he will

The speaker on this occasion was one of our own members Roy Melton who described his talk as, “The Life and Times of a Local Yokel”! Roy born in the late twenties part of a farming family one of six children was a choir boy at Gt Ellingham Church and went to school at Thetford Grammar School. When war was declared he went in the Home Guard which he described as being just like Dads Army. December 1946 he was conscripted by National Service into the RAF Regiment, volunteered for Parachute Regiment at Upper Heyford doing over twenty drops , 1948 took part in Royal Tournament met members of Royal family and Winston Churchill, demobbed, married bought his own farm and set up a dairy herd which he built up over ten years before going arable which gave him more time to pursue his sporting interests. Roy read excerpts from a very nostalgic letter written in the trenches in the
first world war by a Mr Herbert Reeve to his grandfather describing how their ammunition carrying mules were killed and how he was the only survivor of eight men in their trench and how he prayed as he went over the top. Now retired in his eighties Roy is still an active member of our club and holds the position as Minutes Secretary. Our Christmas lunch this year was at the Crown at Gt Ellingham on December 12th, and the next Ladies lunch will be held on 23rd January. A Look At Buy To Lets.....
Norfolk & Suffolk Power Flushing
Making sure you have adequate Landlords Insurance is essential, as a buy to let property is a substantial investment.
Any of these symptoms in my advert could indicate that your central heating system has problems from internal corrosion, rust, sludge and scale.
Priory Insurance Brokers specialise in arranging insurance cover for all types of property from Blocks of Flats to standard Private Dwelling Houses. We deal with many leading UK Insurers and Lloyds Underwriters to provide the best possible quotation and cover for our clients, regardless of the risk. Being totally independent means we are not tied to a single provider and this allows us access to a range of insurance policies from our panel of carefully selected Insurers. Our trained and experienced staff members are able to find the most suitable policy for your specific requirements.
January 2013
In addition to cover on Buildings, policies can be extended to include: • Property Owners Liability • Loss of Rent cover following an insured Peril • Accidental Damage Cover • Cover for Landlords Contents With no Call Centres, you can be assured of a personal and friendly approach by our fully trained staff. We will help you to find the best policy at the best price for your individual needs. For more information or advice, please feel free to call in to our Wymondham Office.
A power flush can restore circulation and efficiency to your central heating system by removing these products. The process involves connecting a power flushing pump to the existing central heating pump valves, or across the tails of a radiator. Specialist chemicals are then pumped around the heating system to loosen and mobilise the unwanted debris.
Each radiator is then individually flushed until clean and on completion, an inhibitor is added to prevent further corrosion. The whole process is carried out with minimal disturbance and disruption. For more information or for a free no obligation quote, ring Paul on (01508) 532671 or 07879 414197. Or alternatively go to www.suffolkpowerflushing.co.uk.

Supreme Bathrooms
Is Your Adviser Independent?
....are pleased to announce that from January 2103 we will be able to supply a full home service with the arrival of kitchens and bedrooms to our already established bathroom business.
From 31st December 2012, there are changes afoot for the financial services industry that have been brought about by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) Retail Distribution Review (RDR) and every financial adviser will have to be classified as independent or restricted. Firms that provide independent advice must make recommendations based on a ‘comprehensive and fair analysis of the relevant market’ and provide ‘unbiased and unrestricted’ advice. Firms that cannot fully meet these requirements will be deemed to be offering restricted advice.
This we feel will give our customer base the opportunity to purchase a kitchen, bathroom or bedroom through one established independent family local business based in Wymondham Norfolk.
Supreme Bathrooms can also offer a supply only alternative. If you have your own builder we can organise delivery of your new bathroom, kichen or bedroom at your own convenience.
This means our customers only have one port of call with their order, which leaves us to project manage all trades and labour involved in each installation contract giving the customer total piece of mind.
Why not get down to Supreme Bathrooms now to view our fantastic range where you can also book a free home survey if required.
Supreme Bathrooms have their own installation teams which take care of all trades including tiling, plumbing, electrics etc. Our showroom which currently displays around 80 bathrooms and showers will be refurbished in 2013 to accomodate kitchens and bedrooms to enhance our portfolio of products. We also have a large free car park.
January 2013
This service will includes a home visit where we will measure your bathroom, kicthen or bedroom before discussing your requirements, which is then followed up by creating your design on our CAD system before offering you a complete package price to carry out all work. We even dispose of the old products and all rubbish before letting you sit back and enjoy your wonderful new Supreme bathroom, kitchen or bedroom.
We believe that being independent should give our clients a better chance of getting the most suitable product for them, from the most suitable company. We are currently independent financial advisers and from next year we will remain independent financial advisers. One of the other changes brought about by RDR is that all advisers will have to have an enhanced minimum level of qualification. This higher level of qualification and the changes by RDR may result in several advisers leaving the industry and the high
street banks are having to rethink whether they will continue to offer financial advice to their customers. At ML Financial Associates all the advisers belong to the financial services professional body - the Personal Finance Society (PFS). We also adhere to the Chartered Insurance Institute code of ethics. Yes we are independent and will remain independent and all our advisers DO already have the enhanced qualifications. We feel these matters are important to give our clients the most suitable advice, with products from the entire market. Ask your adviser if they are ready with all the changes and enhanced qualifications, if not please talk to us. The onset of cold weather provides an extra challenge for our back’s and those with underlying structural problems associated with the spine as the drop in temperature can affect the tone of our muscles. If you fall down the impact and shock of hitting the ground can sprain the small spinal joints between the vertebrae and create abnormal muscle tension. The effect may not occur right away. You may just notice that “something’s not right,” but not enough that you decide to do something about it immediately. These warnings are the easy to ignore and many times people are simply bending down to do a simple task like when they unexpectedly cannot move. The “all I did was...” statement from patients is alarmingly common. An often overlooked trauma is when you come close to falling but don’t actually fall it’s these “near misses” that can still affect your spine. The seizing up of the muscles that attach to the spine
cause the spinal joints to stop functioning normally, the result is pain, stiffness and frequently trapped nerve/ referred pain syndromes into the arms and legs. Time to see the Chiropractor. The chiropractor will find the areas of your spine that have been injured and restore the body’s normal function in most cases pretty quickly. A problem caught early is always easier to take care of before the crisis occurs. The Diss & Harleston Chiropractic Clinics (established in 1989) treat conditions such as acute and chronic low back and neck pain, headaches arising from the neck, hip, knee, shoulder and elbow pain (including frozen shoulder and tennis elbow) and many sports injuries. “Seasonal trends of back pain may sound bizarre but our bodies are like mechanical machines which prefer moving and as such I would encourage everyone to keep as mobile as possible throughout winter”. Amanda Rush DC. Chiropractor.

NEW YEAR NEW YOU 21
Mick Glynn’s Health And Fitness Column New Year New You. When it comes to New Year’s resolutions, making lifestyle changes like exercising more or cutting down on alcohol and cigarettes tends to top the list. Around 7 million of us will make a New Year’s resolution to improve our health, but sticking to it can be tough particularly through the dark winter months ahead. As Christmas can traditionally be a time of over indulgence, many start the New Year by trying to lose any extra pounds gained. But for some losing weight can be a more serious and pressing issue, with obesityrelated health problems placing an increasingly large burden on the NHS. It is forecast that 48 per cent of men and 43 per cent of women could be obese by 2030, which could add a further £1.9 billion in costs to the NHS. Get active For some, joining a gym in the New Year is an ideal way of incorporating more physical activity into their lives, and
research shows that regular physical activity can have the added benefit of increasing life expectancy. A study found that exercising for just 15 minutes a day can increase life expectancy by 3 years, and cut the risk of death by 14 per cent. However with all this scary info and your best intentions. New Year’s resolutions are notoriously short-lived, if not completely forgotten by February. The trick to long term success is variation within your workout, so why not try a differnet exercise class and if your time doesn’t allow one week due to other commitments, use the gym, to help keep your fitness habits going through the spring. Body Blitz - Using Aerobic Moves, Dumbells to Tone, Step boxes to raise the heart rate and X-Bars to create a fun and creative workout. We finish the workout with Yoga and Pilate moves. Pilates is a movement technique which can be taught for strength work or
relaxation. It creates awareness bringing harmony throughout the whole body. By the use of gentle contractions of the core muscles pilates gives control.
Zumba - Combines Latin and International music and effective workouts with Fun and Motivating instructors.
Schwinn Studio Cycling (Spinning) is exciting and fresh, and open to a broad audience. It is an activity that the instructor, music and group atmosphere keep woman and men of all ages and fitness levels motivated.
Powerpump - Using Barbells to develop all-over muscle strength and tone to great music.
VIPR - It may look like a humble rubber tube but Vipr (Viper) is an extremely effective training tool. Seen on the programme ‘Biggest Loser’ Davina McColl is seen being pushed to her limits with Vipr. A great all round workout, particularly for your waist, thighs, Butt and raising your heart rate at the same time. Kettlebells - A kettle bell is a metal ball of various weights attached to a handle. The training idea behind such an item is that it can be swung and lifted with correct form to create a real strength and cardio booster. Some may say that it can outstrip conventional training methods.
Bootcamp is an outdoor military style exercise class, so come rain or shine this class will push the most competitive of exercisers. However it’s fun and open to all abilities to start and progress over the weeks. Great for weight loss and for those wanting out of season training. If you would like more information on Classes, Gym membership or Personal Training, please do not hesitate to contact Mick Glynn, fully qualified and Insured Personal Trainer at MG Fitness Studio. Essential Oils And Immunity By Lara Brown. Essential oils are the volatile aromatic compounds distilled from plants. They are the chemicals that give plants their smell; the luscious aroma of a rose or the sharp scent of peppermint. Plants use these chemicals for, among other things, defence from invaders such as bacteria, fungus and viruses. Essential oils can protect us from microbes in many different ways, from keeping the space around us naturally microbe-free, to readying our immune system for defence, to actually destroying the microbes once they’ve entered our bodies.
own immune system to prevent you from catching an illness in the first place. A popular oil blend can be made using 3 parts Clove Bud oil, 5 parts Lemon oil, 1 and a half parts Eucalyptus Radiata, 1 and a half parts Rosemary and 2 parts Cinnamon Bark oil. CAUTION: Avoid Eucalyptus and Rosemary oil if suffering with high blood pressure or epilepsy.
Electric heat diffusers or candle burners can be used for diffusing essential oils into your environment, this provides three primary benefits: First, the oils are directly eliminating microbes in the air, thus reducing the concentration of live pathogens you may be inhaling. Second, most essential oils, and particularly the strong anti-microbial ones, have an uplifting effect on the psyche. Lastly, in many cases, essential oils will actually fortify your

32 MOTORING REVIEW
www.DispatchMagazine.co.uk
Peugeot 208 Feline 1.6 THP 3dr By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist. “APART FROM track days where do you get as much fun”? That’s kind of what my brain kept repeating each time I got behind the wheel of this fun supermini. Everything about the new Peugeot 208 is so exciting - right from the tiny, sporty steering wheel to the grip the car has around corners. I really feel Peugeot is back on track with its contribution to the hot-hatch market. Way back in the 205 GTI days the French car maker had that particular market sewn up – and the 205 was, and still is, an icon in the motoring world. The 208 will become a legend too; no doubt about it. It has the looks, feel and performance of a true supermini as well as all the safety gadgetry you need for modern day motoring. My test car looked superb cloaked in a Spirit Grey paintjob combined with a black and grey leather effect interior trim. Its 17 inch alloys looked fat against its diminutive but muscular body and its rear spoiler and double chrome tailpipes looked ‘the dog’s’. On starting the engine, the 1598 cc engine sounds promising, and once you engage first gear and take off, you know this car is not your usual little motor. For a start,

the gearshifts feel precise and sporty and the car is eager - it’s like a dog straining at its leash until it can find an open stretch. Then, when you do find a suitable uncluttered bit of road, you can set the 208 free. That’s when it sits back on its haunches for a moment before launching into a blistering attack on the asphalt. The 156 bhp is certainly apparent and the 0-62 mph comes in 8.1 seconds, climbing where legal, (German autobahns calling?) to 134 mph. Available in both three and five door body style variants, the 208 is certainly the embodiment of an exciting new direction for Peugeot. No surprise then that there has been an incredible and positive response to the new 208, illustrated by over 7,500 orders so far. It really has been a tremendous start for the car, as it was also named ‘Best Supermini’ at the Auto Express Awards during the first week of launch. The 208 also obtained five stars from Euro NCAP, certifying its safety credentials, and was the first car in its segment to achieve this following the introduction of more demanding review criteria. So, if you still want hatchback practicality but you are also after a uniquely intuitive and pleasurable driving experience, stop off at your local Peugeot dealer and take a test drive. You won’t be disappointed.

Top Tips To Thaw Out The Car Put a blanket over your windscreen the night before and tuck it under the wipers. The screen shouldn’t freeze and the wipers won’t get stuck to the glass. You can also buy Pre Icer spray that stops the screen from freezing. Get up ten minutes earlier. Defrosting icy cars takes time. If you’re running the engine to defrost in your drive don’t leave the car unattended. Lock the doors with the spare key and keep the car in sight. Show
reasonable care otherwise you won’t be insured. Putting both sunvisors in the horizontal position helps direct the flow of warm air back to the screen. If the door lock is frozen, hold your key over a lighter for 15 seconds to heat it up, and insert the key into the lock. It may take more than one attempt to completely thaw it out. Better still spray some WD40 into the lock barrel the night before and it won’t freeze at all.
Door seals and handles can freeze over and jam. To melt the ice, pour warm water round the door and handle. Never use very hot or boiling water as this could crack the glass. Wipe off any excess, as it will freeze again. Check your exhaust pipe isn’t blocked with ice or snow. The car will be hard to start and toxic fumes could leak back in to interior.
