disagreement, but we will try to minimise conflict while putting your interests, and what you want to achieve, first. We can also help at the start of your relationship – whether with a cohabitation agreement,
or a “pre-nup” before you marry. In our experience, if you can discuss and agree your expectations of each other, this creates a strong foundation for a successful partnership – but it involves cooperation and compromise on both sides. It is particularly important to specify your intentions if you’re buying a property together and one party is making a larger financial contribution than the other. You won’t necessarily like the advice that we give – after all we have to tell you what we think a court would order. If you meet financial guidelines, you may qualify for legal aid if you have been subjected to domestic abuse. We can help with proceedings about children – ranging from residence and contact issues between separating parents, or for grandparents or other family members - through to care proceedings brought by the local authority.
Less commonly, you may need a court order to take your child abroad for a holiday, or for your new partner to have parental responsibility or adopt. We also understand that you may find it difficult to come in during normal office hours so, for the next three months, we will be offering evening and Saturday morning appointments on specific dates for initial “no obligation” advice. We cannot do this as a drop in without an appointment. First, we need to make sure that we aren’t already acting for your partner, and secondly we need to tell you what information to bring to make the best use of your time.

DISS S O UND S LE E P How do you know if you need to replace your bed? or most of us a third of our life is spent asleep, meaning the wear on our mattress over time is considerable, yet a staggering 25% of people wouldn’t consider changing their mattress – even after more than 10 years. It is hardly surprising then that 58% of the population complain of waking feeling stiff and achy. How do you know if you need to replace your bed? • Is your bed more than 7 years old? • Is it uncomfortable? Or when you sleep in someone else’s bed, does that feel better than your own? • Do you wake in the morning with a painful back or stiff limbs? • Can you feel the springs beneath the surface of the mattress? • Do you and your partner roll together? • Is your mattress just generally warn and discoloured? If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, then it could be time to invest in a new bed! The key with mattress buying is to try out as wide a variety of options as possible to find the most suitable mattress for you (and your partner). Given the amount of time you spend in bed, it is important to spend a reasonable amount of time in store trying out new ones, especially if you have been experiencing pains that could come from your existing mattress. It this instance, it may be worth having a chat with your chiropractor for some advice on what they advise is suitable for your back. At Sound Sleep, we stock a variety of brands and different types of mattresses, for example pocket sprung, memory foam, latex and so on. Each manufacturer has different mattresses that offer different levels of support and comfort. When mattress shopping, it is essential to ask for help. We are highly trained 08 | Diss & Attleborough
mattress specialists and are on hand to advise you, not to high pressure you in to buying something that may not be suitable. How do I know which one is right for me? A mattress that is supportive and comfortable is important, but remember, your requirement for support will differ depending on your weight and build. The best bed for your back is not always a firm one. You need a bed that will provide the right support and comfort for you. When laying on your side, ideally your spine should be parallel to the mattress and your spine should not sag down or bow up. Trying them out Give your self plenty of time and wear loose clothing, this helps you turn and get in and out of beds in store. Our Mattress Specialists will point you in the right direction. Try the advised mattresses for as long as possible to get a good ‘feel’ for them. Remember comfort is very subjective. Some people like the sensation of being cocooned in a bed; others prefer to lie on top of them. Back sleepers may like a firmer feel than those that like to sleep on their sides. There are lots of ‘feels’ in store, we are here to help you find what works best for you. If you sleep together, shop together Always shop with your partner, the bed must be suitable for both of you. As it is inevitable one of you may have to compromise! Size matters It is scientifically proven that couples sleep better in a bigger bed. The more space you have the freer you can move without disturbing your partner. This is also a good idea if one or both of you get hot in bed. You should be able to lie side by side, with your arms behind your head and your elbows out, without touching each other. Did you know that two people sharing a standard sized double bed only have as
much personal sleeping space as a baby in a cot? Check your base It is always advisable to purchase a new mattress and divan base together, but not essential. Our mattress specialists will ask questions about your existing base, most bedsteads in good condition will be suitable for a new mattress. However, old divan bases, especially those that are sprung will more than likely need replacing as they could cause harm to your new mattress, in turn affecting the level of support that the new mattress will provide and could also invalidate manufacturers’ warranties and guarantees. Look for the NBF Mark of Approval For added reassurance that the bed you are buying is safe, clean and honest (meaning it is what it says it is) then look for the Approved logo which can be found on all beds at Sound Sleep. All members of the trade association, the National Bed Federation (NBF) must be independently audited to ensure they follow the procedures that comply with flammability, health and hygiene and trade descriptions regulations. More info at www.bedfed.org.uk Now that you have chosen a new mattress, don’t forget that pillows are very important too. A cheap, unsupportive pillow can cause neck and back problems. These are just as important as your new mattress. For more help and advice, visit our in store Dream Team who can talk you through all the pros and cons of various mattresses. We also pride ourselves on having the most up to date mattress technology as well as the old fashioned technology too! DISS DISS M US EUM By Basil Abbott he museum has acquired a childhood diary of Miss Mary Powell. Many will remember her as a kindly teacher at Diss Church School, where she was renowned for keeping her hankie in her knicker leg. The diary is for 1922 and we were trying to work out how old she would have been. In her personal information it says that she was 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighed 7 stone 9 lbs. We thought she was probably in her early teens, although still at Entry House prep school. She was learning logarithms and shorthand and her reading was quite advanced - Dickens, George Eliot and Shakespeare, as well as Angela Brazil. We later found that she was 15, having been born in 1907. She lived for most of her life in Crow’s Lodge, Church Street, now divided into flats.
12 | Diss & Attleborough
It was a comfortable existence of reading, church, hockey, cricket and tennis with her friend Mabel, although she would write “Hurrah!” when term ended.
to the school and Mary was made to eat it in front of the class. This was probably when she was much younger.
“
She went to college to train as a teacher and once told us that a Japanese girl student had invited her for tea served in tiny cups.
”
Mary taught the seven year olds, just out of the infant classes. When teaching how pre-historic man spun wool, she went down to Frenze to collect wool from the hedgerows. She made the class recite their times tables every day until all knew them.
As a teacher she was known as ‘Polly Parrot’ or ‘Missus Parl’
She obviously had a schoolgirl ‘pash’ for one of the teachers, Miss Lindsey, and wrote how much she loved her. She was not unaware of national events, and was fascinated by the wedding of her namesake Princess Mary. She also mentioned the murder of Field Marshall Sir Henry Wilson by the IRA.
In the 1960s or 70s she had a year as headteacher, when Henry Denny went away for a year to do an IT course. As a teacher she was known as ‘Polly Parrot’ or ‘Missus Parl’.
Not mentioned in the diary is the humiliating occasion when she had refused her food, so her mother brought it round

ATTLEBOROUGH A L MARY GR E E N Investing in uncertain times ith challenges both at home and overseas, investing in equities can appear risky. Phil Beck looks at why it’s still OK to be an investor. The year 2017 is certainly turning out to be an interesting one with the General Election, Brexit negotiations and new leaders in both Europe and the US making some investors nervous and timid. However, investing in equity-based funds does still make sense for investors who are looking for the potential for aboveinflation growth and who are prepared to accept at least a moderate degree of risk. Risk is the critical factor when looking at equity investments. When we advise clients on their investment portfolios, we always assess their attitude to risk to
16 | Diss & Attleborough
ensure that any investment elements are aligned to their risk profile. Every investment element has a risk rating and clients are matched to suitable investment assets. Any client who is completely risk averse will normally be steered to safer cash-based investment routes. Another key factor in recommending an investment portfolio is diversification. The old adage of not putting all your eggs into one basket is still true today. Unless there are specific circumstances that indicate a different approach, we normally recommend that clients avoid concentrated sources of risk by spreading their investment capital over a range of different assets. Investing in equities is rarely something
that we would recommend for clients looking for a quick return but is rather something that forms part of a medium to long-term strategy for growth. However, that doesn’t mean that we believe that you should make your investment and then leave it alone to weather whatever the markets throw at it. Managing your investment portfolio is essential. Investment Management is a highly specialised service that involves a careful watch on market trends and indicators and then adjusts your investment holdings accordingly. When you sign up to an Investment Management service, you give the Manager the authority to make changes to your portfolio without having to
www.DispatchMagazine.co.uk
consult you within agreed parameters such as your risk profile and any specific preferences you have expressed. Most financial advisers will provide a range of Investment Management services that vary in their reactivity. The good news is that there are forms of Investment Management to suit every size of portfolio and every pocket with the use of standard or model portfolios. Fund managers provide a range of model and risk-graded portfolios made up of a variety of investment assets. The portfolios are aligned to different levels of risk which can be matched to the investor’s own risk profile; they are rebalanced as markets change, usually quarterly but more often if needed. If you are looking for a fully proactive
www.DispatchMagazine.co.uk
service, then full Discretionary Fund Management is available where your portfolio is specifically tailored to you and is monitored on a daily basis. However, this level of proactivity does come at a cost and is not always suitable for a small to medium-sized portfolio. Investment Management can be provided by the advice firm themselves but is often outsourced to city specialists whose expertise is perfectly suited to keeping a close watch on what is happening with your investments. Their focus is your portfolio and they will make adjustments within the parameters agreed with you. Your financial adviser will be entirely focused on ensuring that your financial strategy is still delivering what’s needed as your life changes and will ensure that any investment
management service you have adopted continues to meet your objectives. The value of an investment and the income from it could go down as well as up. The return at the end of the investment period is not guaranteed and you may get back less than you originally invested. The tax treatment of investments depends on individual circumstances and is subject to change. For independent financial advice, contact Phil on 01603 706740 or email phil. beck@almarygreen.com. Please remember that the advice here is generic and we recommend that you get individual personalised advice.

T h e BIG C Special guests to open new BIG C shop he new Big C Charity Shop in Attleborough will be officially opened at 10am on Tuesday 30th May by the town’s mayor, Mr Jeremy Burton and special guests; a group of South Norfolk ladies who have recently celebrated raising over £100,000 for the charity. The Big C shop is situated in Attleborough’s former Post Office and where possible, care has been taken to retain features to reflect the building’s former use, including the original paneling and flooring. The interior design also pays homage to its past with postcard feature wallpaper and use of old signage, with the old telephone box taking on a new use as the fitting room. On the day, the Big C team is keen to welcome the local community to the 18 | Diss & Attleborough
new store and will be on hand to speak to anyone who is keen to explore volunteering opportunities supporting the shop managers. Duties include sorting stock and helping on the tills. Hannah Phoenix, assistant manager of the new shop said, “As a local charity, we are really looking forward to joining the Attleborough community and welcoming customers old and new. Their support is so valuable in the work we do to help those affected by cancer throughout Norfolk and Waveney.” Clive Evans, Director of Income Generation and Communications at Big C says, “Our shops provide an integral part of our charitable income. On average 20 people are given a cancer diagnosis every day in Norfolk and Waveney and the need for our services are increasing
daily. Customers supporting our new Attleborough shop will be directly helping us to continue providing our four support and information centres, cancer fighting equipment and helping to fund pioneering research programmes.” Big C has 10 other charity shops in towns and communities across Norfolk and Waveney, including a distribution centre, furniture emporium and craft supplies shop at Wymondham. There is also a Bridal Boutique in Timberhill which helps keep the cost down when planning a wedding. GENERAL HOLEY JU MPER S ! Council launches textile collection trial in Diss outh Norfolk Council will be collecting and recycling residents unwanted textiles from the kerbside as part of a trial in Diss. Over 3,000 properties will take part in the pilot scheme which will start this Thursday (11 May). The Council hopes this new initiative will reduce the high amount of textiles that currently go in the recycling and rubbish bins. 65% of green recycling bins collected by the Council contain textiles which cannot be sorted or separated and end up as waste. Furthermore, 1,000 tonnes of textiles, which could be recycled, go into the black rubbish bin each year.
Properties taking part, will be given white textile recycling bags and a leaflet which will let them know what items can be recycled and how the service works. Acceptable materials includes items such as clothing, shoes (paired), handbags, belts and household linens. The bags can then be put alongside their green recycling bins and will be collected on their usual recycling collection day. GENERAL GENERAL
T E D DY BEA R FES TI VAL Starts 1st July Now in its 14th year, the Great Ellingham Teddy Festival team are busy preparing for another “Teddy Fortnight” of Family fun and fundraising. All funds raised are distributed between local charities and organisations, including the East Anglian Children’s Hospice which we have been proud to support for many years. The Teddy Bear Festival runs from the 1st – 16th July, and sees residents and local businesses make and display life size bears throughout the picturesque village of Great Ellingham. There is no theme, so anything goes! From nursery rhymes and historical figures to sports stars and politics, we have seen it all. To help you find your way around, we have trail maps that can be purchased for £1 from the Village Store. The festival begins on Sat 1st July at 9am with the ever popular garage sales and car boot. There will be an 20 | Diss & Attleborough
outdoor café on the green serving teas, coffees and a selection of cakes and sweet treats, and, for the first year the Great Ellingham Scouts will be offering a car washing service at the Recreation centre car park. Thursday 6th July is the Preview Evening for the Art Exhibition, this will be held at St James Church and promises to be a great evening with live music by the Roskettes. The Art Exhibition will then run until Sunday 9th July, and will this year also include art by the Children of Great Ellingham Primary School. Saturday 8th July is the craft fair at St James, with a selection of craft stalls as well as a tombola and refreshments on site. The final weekend sees the return of the traditional Teddy fun Day on Saturday
15th July. This promises to be a great day for all the family. Entrance to this event is free. There will be bouncy castles, the Teddy Tombola, trade stalls, pony rides, BBQ, and the return of the very popular Circus Workshop. On Sunday 16th July, a Thanksgiving Service will be held at St James’ Church to close the festival. ELDERLY T HE HEAR I NG C A R E CE N T RE Check your hearing health at Norfolk Show orfolk hearing care company, The Hearing Care Centre, is looking for volunteers to have their hearing tested, to highlight the importance of looking after your hearing, at this year’s Norfolk Show. The company, which has 7 centres across the county, is showing its passion for helping those who suffer from hearing loss, by asking show-goers to see how easy and pain-free it is to have a simple check. Managing Director of the company, Karen Finch, said, “At The Hearing Care Centre we strive to be more than just a company that sells hearing aids. The combination of our hearing technology and customer service allow

people to be back in the real world where sound is all around us. “It is not until you lose your hearing, that you realise all of the sounds you take for granted. People have regular dental checks and eye tests but never give their hearing a second thought. The longer an untreated hearing loss goes undetected the quicker it will deteriorate.” The Hearing Care Centre will be at the Norfolk Showground, on Wednesday 28th and Thursday 29th June 2017 at stand 49 on Third Avenue. Free refreshments and ear health checks will also be available. For more information visit www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk
