But many older people cannot see that their lives are of any interest. I remember going to see a man who was a grandson of one of the Roydon rioters, only to find him tongue-tied and unable to tell me anything. A year later, when we were about to dramatise the enclosure events of 1893, the same man came out with a volley of anecdotes that I could have used. It shows that people can be nonplussed by suddenly being asked to deliver information, especially if it might be made public. Several people have given me valuable stories and then said, “I didn’t realise it was going to be in the paper.” A woman flew at me in a supermarket one day because I referred in an article to “a woman whose family had been in business in the town for 40 years” - appalled by being mentioned in the local paper. I had not even named her,
although many would have recognised who I meant. My mother almost had a breakdown because I wrote a humorous account of our family life, as she thought people were laughing at her. When I was preparing a son-et-lumiere at an old air base, a man told me that he grew up next to it. So I asked him if he would look at my script, give me comments on it, correct it if necessary and maybe add some anecdotes. When I emailed it to him he didn’t reply and didn’t come to the show. Some people just cannot handle what to me would be normal behaviour. In short, there is a huge fund of experience and local historical knowledge out there that ought to be gathered before it is lost. But there are also the brick walls of low esteem, secretiveness and an unwillingness to go public about the past. Basil Abbott

It’s a great way to get together with friends and family to do something easy and fun for charity. The money raised from Blooming Great Tea Parties will help Marie Curie Nurses to provide more free care to people with terminal illnesses in their own homes. HMRC Targets Second Home Owners.
Fit Together offers free daytime walks led by volunteers - a great way to get outdoors and keep active with like-minded people.
HMRC have launched the Property Sales Campaign that encourages taxpayers that have sold a second property but have not declared the capital gains tax to volunteer this information to HMRC by 9th August 2013. This can be done by email, mail or telephone. An arrangement to pay the outstanding tax must then be made by 6th September 2013. After that date, HMRC will begin contacting taxpayers that they consider may have undeclared capital gains tax on the sale of their second properties and levy the tax, interest and penalties due. Penalties that arise for not declaring the tax due within the normal time limits will be reduced if taxpayers take advantage of HMRC’s campaign.
individuals’ tax records and issue P800 forms, where necessary. The forms either issue tax refunds or inform taxpayers of tax underpayments to be coded into their 2014-15 tax codes. If you are in receipt of a form P800, it is important that all the details on the form be checked against your own records to ensure that HMRC have used the correct information. Estimates are often used in HMRC calculations from figures that may be out of date and irrelevant, resulting in incorrect tax codes being issued and tax deducted incorrectly.
Walking and other activities can bring many and varied benefits which are true for anyone at any age! Here are just a few of the reasons to get you motivated: • Improve your health • Lower your risk of heart disease • Control your weight • Boost your energy levels • Reduce your stress levels • Meet new friends The walks are of varying length and terrain and happen on most weekdays. There is no need to book, just turn up at the meeting point. On your first session you will be asked to complete a short form. Well behaved dogs are welcome if they are kept on a lead.
As always, if you are in doubt as to whether you are being taxed correctly, seek professional advice.

Window Geeks “Replacing your steamed-up windows doesn’t mean you have to replace the whole window…Save thousands by changing only the glass”… It can be stressful when things break or go wrong, especially when it seems the only solution comes at great expense. Unexpected bills can hit households very hard at a time when every penny counts and it means that thousands of homeowners put off fixing their windows or doors for fear of the high costs usually associated with these types of products... Well now you can relax…because WindowGeeks, a national window, door and conservatory repair specialist, has expanded into Norwich and will service the whole of the Norfolk region, giving local home owners access to real money-saving options; one that can reduce what could be an alarming bill in the thousands to a far more acceptable one in the low hundreds - and in most cases even lower than that. The fact is that the average single repair or replacement undertaken by WindowGeeks, which includes locks, handles and hinges, as well as the usual replacement of steamed-up double glazed units is less
than £60...not surprising really when you consider that the replacement of a single steamed-up double glazed window starts from as low as £30 including VAT and fitting…which is why, at this point, many people take the opportunity to upgrade to energy efficient double glazed units. Our new local and experienced team, headed up by Steve Olley, join all of our other skilled craftsmen and women throughout the UK, each providing a professional and cost effective service to 1,000s of customers from Plymouth in the Southwest, through Norwich in the East, up to Preston in the North and all points in-between… “Lots of people have problems with their windows,” says Steve, “They get steamed-up and won’t clear, or the locks stick or the handles get loose…and it becomes even more of a problem at this time of year when cold draughts get through...but what’s really surprising is that most people don’t realise that all of these problems can be fixed quickly and without spending a fortune or having to
sell one or more of their children, unless they want to of course”… WindowGeeks has over 38 years’ experience in the glazing industry and it’s sad to think that there are still quite a few traditional window companies that either refuse or just don’t want to carryout repairs…now were not saying that all double glazing companies don’t carry out repairs, many do, and do a great job, but Steve adds, “In most cases they’re not really interested in the smaller jobs and that’s what’s so great about WindowGeeks, we offer a real cost-effective solution, which makes it a very easy decision for our customers to choose us...there’s no pressure sales from us because there’s no viable alternative, unless, that is, you want to spend 10, 20 or even 100 times more on replacing all your double glazing!” While the cost savings might be the biggest draw, there’s another reason customers should choose WindowGeeks and one that has inevitably convinced many customers throughout the UK to use us;
“It’s all about honesty and trust,” says Steve. “There’s integrity in what WindowGeeks do and that’s very important to me, we tell the truth, only charge for what needs doing and we always honour our promises…We run a very successful and ethical business based on good old fashioned customer service backed up with top quality products and support from our head office.” WindowGeeks provides free quotations with; • No call out charges • No credit card charges • No deposits • No minimum order values, • No high pressure sales men or women • No hidden extras • 10 year guarantee on all glazed products All our quotes include VAT and Fitting Call now for a FREE QUOTE on 0800 61 22 943 or visit us at www.windowgeeks.co.uk

Legal Aid Cuts Make A Bad Situation Worse For many years, Legal Aid has been available to those who required advice or legal services from solicitors. Many areas of legal work were covered by the scheme and, provided someone could show they had realistic prospects of success in an economic way, and that they qualified on financial grounds, Legal Aid could be widely accessed from many firms of solicitors across the country. This enabled solicitors to provide advice, practical assistance and representation at Court. Many hundreds of thousands of people have been helped over this time when they ran into difficulties in areas such as medical accidents, contract disputes or in respect of breakdown in relationships. In the family context, assistance was available for such matters as separation, divorce, finance, arrangements for children and domestic violence issues. This has all changed from 1st April. The government has targeted legal aid to cut public spending and withdrawn many categories of work from the Legal Aid scheme. Accordingly, many vulnerable people will no longer have access under the
July 2013
scheme to professional help tailored to their individual needs, regardless of their financial circumstances or the real difficulties in which they find themselves. As a result, they may be left representing themselves in front of a Judge in a courtroom against opponents who may be legally represented. Legal Aid still remains available for certain types of cases, including where there are care proceedings or domestic violence. Indeed, if there has been any domestic violence, Legal Aid can be used not only to obtain injunctions against the abuser but also to help resolve issues relating to children and finances arising out of the breakdown of the relationship. Making things more complex as part of the savings, the Government has restricted the solicitors who can offer this service to those solicitors who have shown that they are suitably qualified to carry out this type of work. Jackamans have done so and we are therefore able to obtain Legal Aid in such cases. If you have been in this unfortunate situation, then we may be able to assist. Please do not hesitate to contact us to allow us to explain how we may be able to help you.
However, for the majority of cases, Legal Aid is now unavailable. Therefore, someone in a difficult situation is left to his or her own devices to decide what action is needed in any particular case and how best to progress this. So what can a young parent do when their former partner decides that they can no longer see their child? How do you get a divorce? Who decides who lives in the house when husband and wife/partners separate? What happens to the pension? Where can you get reliable advice and assistance? Some will be driven to the internet, which is fine for general information, but how does one know the source is accurate and current and how it relates to your particular circumstances? Some will ask family and friends but without necessarily knowing how experienced they may be. Some will try to deal with things themselves but with varying degrees of success. Some will just not bother at all. If you do take matters forward, your opponent may be able to take advantage of your situation or you may agree to an inappropriate resolution either because
of inexperience or a fear of the unknown. What also needs to be remembered is the fact that, even if you are not legally represented, you may end up having to pay your opponent’s legal costs in certain circumstances. We want to offer you the opportunity to get straightforward and realistic help at an affordable price. At Jackamans, we are still able to help clients who experience such difficulties. We offer a free initial interview to discuss your needs and identify a way forward. We can then agree a package designed to meet your specific needs at a cost you can afford. We can deal with your case from start to finish; just draft the necessary paperwork or simply give advice as and when requested. This would be on the basis of fees agreed with you before any work starts. We can also offer a fixed fee arrangement for a straightforward divorce. For further information please call Anita Sharpe on 01379 643555 or email at anita.sharpe@jackamans.co.uk.

Hearing Loss Is Exhausting! A recent study has shown that people with hearing loss, who do not use hearing aids, become much more exhausted, than people who wear hearing aids. Among those who had a significant hearing loss and did not use hearing aids, around 60% said they often felt physically exhausted in the evenings, while only around 40% of those who used hearing aids said the same. When it came to mental exhaustion, around 50% of those who had a significant hearing loss and did not use hearing aids agreed that they often felt mentally exhausted in the evenings, while only around 30% of those who used hearing aids said they often felt mentally exhausted in the evenings. Karen Finch, local audiologist and Managing Director of The Hearing Care Centre, explains that this is a common symptom of having a hearing loss: “Nearly all the patients who come to see us about their hearing loss explain that they become exhausted at the end of the day. Instead of just relying on hearing to interpret speech and react appropriately, all available visual
July 2013
and acoustic clues have to be used as well. The added concentration and energy necessary needed to follow a conversation can leave us feeling extremely tired.” Karen continued, “When hearing loss occurs, reactions to situations vary. Living with an unaddressed hearing loss can often lead to social isolation; we feel tired just trying to live our everyday day lives in the same way we once did when we could hear. If we isolate ourselves it could lead us to missing out on our activities and our interactions with our friends and family, we may feel lonely and left out.” “It is important to break this negative cycle and get your hearing assessed if you recognise this pattern. If this sounds like you or someone you know, it’s time to take action,” said Karen. The Hearing Care Centre is a multiaward winning, private, family run company, which has centres locally in
Attleborough, Botesdale, Eye and Harleston. To encourage those with hearing loss that have yet to seek help, they have organised two special events taking place in July. The Hearing Care Centre is holding a FREE Open Day event in Eye on Friday 19th July 2013 (9am-5pm) and in Botesdale on Monday 22nd July 2013 (9am-5pm). On the day you will have the chance to hearing tested free of charge, receive professional advice and learn exactly how hearing aids work and how they can help. Appointments are essential. Mid Summer Is Here! It may not always feel like it and the sun may not always shine but it’s definitely a lot warmer and it’s light till gone 9pm which is fantastic and has a lovely feel good factor. Time for concerts, picnics in the park and the Attleborough Carnival but ....... the not so good news is that these things all cost money. Depressing or what? Is it time that you sorted out your finances? Have you received your tax credits annual summary? Did you know that if we here at KBA can call tax credits for you (easy authorisation required) and we can deal with your award for the coming year. Surely that has got to be good, no more hanging around in an interminable queue listening to an irritating message saying that you could be doing this on line or you could call back another time!!! Just hand it all over to us and we will sort it for you. Of course if you are self employed you might like us to estimate your earnings for you by the 31 July 2013 deadline and we can then call back at a later date and confirm your actual earnings once we have completed your accounts for you. Why not get organised and make an
July 2013
appointment to see us today and we can get this underway – no more worrying just hand it all over. How are you finding the Real Time Information for PAYE? Is this working out ok for you or could you do with a hand? Here at KBA we have helped a number of employers with their payroll since the new legislation came in and we get the feeling that they can’t quite believe how easy and relatively cheap it is to let someone else do the work and take the strain. Why not give us a call 01953 457173 to find out how much it would cost to do your payroll - bet it is a lot less than you think. So instead of spending your summer worrying about your finances and how much there is to do, why not make one phone call to us - come in for an initial FREE consultation and we can do the rest for you. Then sit back enjoy the summer - there are far nicer things to do than sit and complete your tax return when you could be outside enjoying the sun.
A Familiar Face Joins Andy Free Independent Family Funeral Director Andy Free is pleased to announce that Jane Patrick has recently joined him and Vicky as a funeral arranger at his family run funeral home in Attleborough. Jane who lives in the nearby village of Eccles, is married to Robert, they have four grown up children and 2 grandchildren. She comes from a local farming family from Attleborough and has lived all her life locally so has a good knowledge of Attleborough and the surrounding villages and its people. Andy says Jane and I have worked together as Funeral Director and Funeral Arranger making a very successful team helping bereaved families at two local funeral homes in Attleborough for many years now. We are looking forward to working together again, continuing to quietly help and guide families to make the funeral arrangements of their choice for their loved ones. We pride ourselves on giving everyone the time and space they need when arranging a funeral. Each funeral is individual, each grieving family is individual, our belief is that each and every one should be given as much time as they need to consider and reflect on all of the different funeral
options there are available to them today. We have a relaxing, comfortable lounge where families can come and see us, we can sit with a cup of tea or coffee and take our time to talk about what is available today. If you would prefer to make the arrangements in the comfort of your own familiar surroundings, we are more than happy to visit you at home. Andy says another trend we are noticing recently is for people to come and sit and talk to us about the options for their own funerals. They may not necessarily want to pay for them as a pre-paid funeral plan but they really reassured that their wishes have been recorded for the future. If you would like to do this please do get in touch or pop in and see us. “We believe the smallest of detail makes the biggest of difference” To contact us call (01953) 452455 or visit us at Fairfields, High Street, Attleborough

Microchip Law
Library News
Are You a Responsible Pet Owner?
Creepy House Summer Reading Challenge at your local library
As of 2016, every dog owner in England will have to microchip their animal - the new compulsory legislation comes under plans intended to reduce the number of strays in the UK. The microchip will be coded with owners’ details, enabling vets to locate the owners if a dog is found, and owners who do not comply could face fines of up to £500. An incredibly amount of taxpayers’ money - £57million per year - is spent on caring for and rehoming stray dogs. The new ruling will hopefully cut this figure dramatically and save over 100,000 dogs from being abandoned and left homeless. Microchipping is a simple and inexpensive solution that gives pet owners peace of mind - It allows vets to locate the owners of s stray dog if one is brought into the practice.
It’s also much easier to trace and find a stolen dog.

East Anglia Air Ambulance Enter The Dragon Mystical creatures will be coming to Norwich this summer to impart their supernatural powers on sea lovers and land dwellers alike in a bid to raise money for a local charity. Dragon boats will be docking at Whitlingham Outdoor Education Centre at Whitlingham County Park for the first East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) Dragon Boat Race. One that the charity hopes will become an annual event. Jess Down, EAAA Fundraising Manager
said: “As a charity which relies on community fundraising we’re often asked which events people can attend in order to support our life saving work. Until now, we’ve only really had a fun run which people can come along to in the area which isn’t always great for those who don’t enjoy running. We’ve therefore organised our first ever dragon boat race as it will be great fun for both those taking part and spectators.” Taking place on Sunday 21 July, in Trowse near Norwich, the event is being organised by the charity to raise vital funds to help the air ambulance enhance its hours
of service and enable them to cover incidents which occur after dark. Those looking for a different type of challenge are invited to sign up and take part as the charity is now looking for teams of 15 to fill the boats, and there’ll be a prize for the best dressed participants. Jess continued: “It’s only through these sorts of events that we can continue to operate and send our crews to patients who really need their expert help.” Teams are made up of ten paddlers and one drummer although teams can consist of up to 15 people to allow for substitutions. Each team member is asked to pay a registration fee of £38 (based on a full team of 15) and the charity asks that the team raise a further £500 between them. For further details, or to book your place, contact Jess Down on 01603 489406 or email jess.down@ eaaa.org.uk Follow us on Twitter at @EastAngliAirAmb or ‘like’ our Facebook page – East Anglian Air Ambulance Charity.

Life Never Gives Us A Second Chance! Unfortunately a friend of one of our clients died recently and the distress that was caused to their family was extremely upsetting because their financial affairs were not in order. As the heading says ‘ Life never gives us a second chance’. Please take a few moments to consider: Does your spouse/partner know about your investments? Do you have an adviser that can help with these? Do you have a written record of these to help your family? Include with this your bank accounts and where your Will is stored. * Do you have a Will that is in order and up to date? Do you have enough savings/life insurance to provide for your family? Is your life insurance sufficient to cover your outstanding dues and liabilities and for your spouse to have a comfortable life?

Local Funeral Director Rosedale Is One Of The Best. South Norfolk funeral director Rosedale Funeral Home has been named one of the UK’s best funeral directors following an assessment visit by the Good Funeral Guide, an independent funeral consumer advocacy organisation. In its review of Rosedale the Good Funeral Guide says: “Outstandingly well run, highly professional but, top of the list, you’ll find here an exceptional focus on people. Quiet, kind, capable and utterly sincere. Good value for money, too.” The Good Funeral Guide assesses select funeral homes according to strict criteria which focus on the quality of the experience they offer to bereaved people. Rosedale Funeral Home has been inspected to ensure that clients are treated with courtesy, listened to with empathy, offered a full range of choice, charged fairly and empowered to play
whatever part they want in creating a send-off for the person they have lost which accords with their values and wishes. The accreditation process also involved spending time behind the scenes in order to ascertain that those who have died are cared for with the utmost tenderness and respect.
And this week, the team at Rosedale were also delighted to learn that they have won a Customer Care Award from Funeral Planning Services, recognising the commitment and determination that staff at Rosedale have shown to offer its customers the best possible service, including the peace of
mind that comes with paying for and arranging a funeral in advance. Graham Williams, director of Funeral Planning Services says, “The hard work and dedication it takes to consistently provide such high-quality customer service deserves to be recognised.”
Charles Cowling, author of the Good Funeral Guide says: “Choosing a funeral director can be very difficult because they all look much the same. But they’re not. Some, a precious few, are truly outstanding, and Rosedale is one of only two in Norfolk to reach this standard. The team at Rosedale are unsung heroes doing a magnificent job, and the people of Diss and Attleborough deserve to know this. Bereaved people need to do their very best for their loved one. They deserve the very best funeral director.”

ShowTime! Wayland Agricultural Show will celebrate its 140th year. The Wayland Agricultural Show, one of the longest running traditional agricultural shows in the UK, celebrates its 140th year when it returns on Sunday 4th August 2013. Last year, the one day annual show was cancelled at the eleventh hour due to a sewage leak. However, after an enormous amount of support from the local community, the show is returning this year to Watton with a jam-packed line-up of entertainment for all the family, and to raise funds for local charities and community projects. Graham Shingfield, chairman of the Wayland Agricultural Show says: “We are relieved that the Wayland Agricultural Show is able to take place, and have been overwhelmed with the support we have received from our sponsors, members, traders and exhibitors. The letters and emails of support expressing how much the show means to people has been a great comfort to us and I would like to thank everyone who has been so kind. Last year we were expecting a record attendance and I know that this year, with the hard work the committee organisers have put in, it will be the best yet.” He added: “Whilst it was previously reported that a donation from Anglian Water had ‘Saved the Wayland Show’ the truth is that our finances are still very marginal. Anglian Water has indicated that they may be willing to make donations to local good causes on our behalf, but to date we have been unable to agree whether this will happen or not. Never-the-less we are looking forward to our 140th show and we are planning a great day out for everyone on August 4th.” The Main Ring will feature headline appearances from James Dylan International Motorcycle Stunt Show and Merion Owen’s Quack Pack, an international known duck herding troop, alongside the chance to see all the traditional livestock competitions. Even more traditional country entertainment will be provided by Mid Norfolk Gun Dogs, West Norfolk Hunt Hounds and Horkesley Park Suffolk Punches.
Keep an eye out for the Lifestyle, Horticulture, Fur and Feather and Tastes of Norfolk Marquees alongside various trade stalls and food outlets which will make it an unforgettable day out. The Wayland Show is also pleased to welcome local star of Bargain Hunt and Flog it! Phillip Allwood who will be giving visitors the chance to get a valuation on their items, and the scarecrow competition is a chance for children to express themselves by creating scarecrows that are inspired by nursery rhyme characters. In addition there will be fairground rides, Punch & Judy and also Polly’s Parrot Road show to keep them all entertained. There will also be a prize giving for the Wayland Agricultural Society Young Achiever Award. The award is designed to recognise outstanding dedication and contribution to agriculture, horticulture, wildlife or any other rural related sector or industry. All entrants must be under 21 years of age and they will be required to demonstrate and share their commitment and involvement in their related subject. Last year’s winner Rebecca Munday was a Countryside Management student from Easton College who impressed with her extensive volunteer work in the local area. This award is open to anyone in Norfolk with nominations welcome from relatives or friends of individuals who they consider worthy of the achievement. The Show is organised by a dedicated committee of volounteers ensure that all the profits of the show are given to local charities and good causes in the community. In 2011, over £27,000 was raised. Gates open at 10am. Ticket prices are: Adults (17+) £10 or £8 online. Children (5-16) £4 or £3 online. Concessions £4 or £3 online. Family ticket (2 adults & 2 children) £25 or £20 online. Redwings Horse Sanctuary Join the staff and horses at Redwings Horse Sanctuary for a fantastic weekend at the charity’s headquarters in Hapton, south of Norwich. This beautiful site in the heart of the Norfolk countryside is not normally open to the public, but will be ‘flinging wide its gates’ on the weekend of the 13th and 14th July from 10am to 4pm so visitors can see behind the scenes at Redwings. Best of all, entry is free of charge. This is a great chance to ‘rub noses’ with over 300 of the Sanctuary’s special rescued horses and ponies, and you can also visit the on-site horse hospital, take tours around the 350 acre site and watch displays from the handling and rehoming teams too. If it all gets a bit too exciting there will be a café and gift shop on site where you can grab a slice of cake and a rest but don’t linger too long or you may miss gorgeous orphaned foal Stephen having his dinner! There will be free children’s activities as well as a fantastic prize draw and donated tack sale, so there really is something for everyone! Dogs on leads are welcome too. Redwings is the largest horse sanctuary in the UK, currently caring for over 1300 rescued horses, ponies, donkeys and

mules at nine sites across England. The charity has four visitor centres that are open on a more regular basis, including two in Norfolk. The first is at Caldecott Hall near Great Yarmouth, which is open daily during the Summer and is home to more than 100 of Redwings rescued horses, ponies, donkeys and mules such as handsome heavy horse Prince and cheeky donkey Denise! There is also a brand new Redwings visitor centre at Aylsham in North Norfolk, which is open Friday to Monday throughout the year. Coronation Street star Kate Ford officially opened this brand new facility to the public on Saturday 27th April at a special fun day, with close to 1000 visitors helping with the celebrations. Residents include the charity’s newest adoption stars: handsome Gulliver, gorgeous donkeys Wiggins and Wacko, and tiny tearaways The Gangster Shetlands. Entry to all Redwings’ centres is free of charge although a donation towards the charity’s welfare work is always greatly
appreciated. Redwings receives no government funding and is completely reliant on public donations to continue its vital work rescuing and rehabilitating neglected horses and educating the public on horse care issues to improve the life of all equines in the UK. Things Really Worth Knowing About Wills Any errors in your Will are only likely to be discovered after you die!! Because it’s nigh on certain that you’ve never had your Will double checked have you? That makes two of you then, because it’s equally certain that the person who created your Will never had his/her handiwork checked either! Like me, you might be shocked to learn that the majority of solicitors and Will Writers (and it is the majority) do NOT double check any of the Wills they create, although a few do operate a spot-check system. Perhaps this goes a long way in explaining why possibly as many as 1 in 5 Wills could be defective! Don’t you think it’s better to find out now if your Will is defective, rather than your Executors finding out for a fact that it is, after you die? Your beneficiaries would prefer it that way too! WHO’S WILL IS IT?
Think your Will is binding? Then think again! A man had his will drafted and redrafted at least 10 times to ensure that his legacies went exactly where he wanted them to go. But after his death his beneficiaries got together and with a Deed of Variation totally changed where the legacies ended up! Or what about the lady who did everything the law required in her Will (exclusion clause + expression of wishes) to ensure that her adult daughter (estranged for 24+ years) could not benefit from her estate, only for her daughter to make and win a substantial claim on her estate when the court over ruled her Wishes! Pity someone didn’t mention forfeiture or “no contest” clauses to her and the outcome would almost certainly have been different. What about an ex-spouse? The Inheritance (provision for family & dependants) Act 1975 gives an unmarried ex-spouse the right to make a claim upon their previous
spouse’s estate! Once again, time to think about exclusion clauses! It’s not just beneficiaries you have to worry about either. Your executors have the right to ignore any funeral wishes outlined in your Will, and any cash you have put to one side for funeral expenses they can use for another purpose! A Will is not always the right answer! One thing you should always remember about Wills: any gift you make via your Will is absolute. This means that you cannot add conditions or “strings” to that gift. Once that legacy goes to cousin Hilda, then it’s entirely up to Hilda what she does with it! But absolute gifting does have a darker side. Your gift can be “lost” by your beneficiary in several different ways. Let us say that you leave your estate to your son, and he dies shortly afterwards. Now the daughter-in-law you never really cared for has 100% of that legacy! It gets worse! She remarries, so now who is her sole beneficiary! Your son could equally have lost the legacy to creditors if he became bankrupt, or perhaps ended up paying inheritance tax on the very money you also paid inheritance tax when you died! All this can be avoided with the timely use of an appropriate trust or trusts. These are of course more expensive than a simple Will, but are more affordable than ever. However they do offer substantially better protection, and not just for your children, but for their children as well! It’s called blood-line planning. Don’t get the wrong impression. A Will can still be a very powerful tool, but to get it right you need to take a different approach. As we said last month this is not about you giving instructions, this is all about getting best advice, and double checked advice at that! 32 GREAT ELLINGHAM TEDDY BEAR TRAIL
The Great Ellingham Teddy Bear Festival The sun is shining, the sky is cloudless and all around me is the sound of children’s’ laughter. Villagers and those from further afield come together and enjoying what is one of the biggest and most successful local annual events of the last ten years. The Great Ellingham Teddy Bear Festival returns this year and is celebrating its tenth year raising funds for local charities and organisations.
We’ve had over 700 different bears over the years which is a real achievement and shows immense creativity amongst our participating villagers.
Over the last nine years we are proud to have raised in excess of £40,000 benefitting the many charities we have supported. None of it would ever have been possible without the villagers and the people who come along and support us.
A full photo archive of all the bears we’ve had can be found on our website listed below.
And it is these people that drive us and our ambition to improve the festival year on year.
They will start at 9am and a map of their locations will be available from the recreation centre for £1.
This year is no exception. We are aiming very high and have organised several events to accompany our famous Teddy Trail.
The festival will then run until Sunday 21st July
The Teddy Trail, for the uninitiated reader, is made up of life sized straw bears cleverly positioned into scenes which sometimes are very elaborate but often really quite simple. We’ve had Bill & Kate from the old Springwatch watching some otters, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet re-enacting the titanic scene on the front of the ship with their arms out, several wood-workers cutting logs, Britain’s Got Talent judges, Jedward, Captain Jack Sparrow and the list goes on.
July 2013

The fibres of your carpet and upholstery act as filters, holding the spores and pollen reducing the amount in the air and thus the amount you breathe in.
Pollen in your curtains Your curtains are constantly exposed to indoor and outdoor dust and debris and, in particular, pollen.
Pollen in your sofa Pollen is in the air all around us and upholstery fabrics are fantastic at capturing and holding these minute particles meaning every time you flop into your favourite sofa or chair, millions of allergens are thrown into the air and all around you.
A simple tip is to simply vacuum the curtains while you are doing the rest of the room. Go in both directions, up and down, so you get rid of any allergens trapped in the pile of a fabric such as velvet which is commonly used to make curtains.

To combat this it is recommend your upholstery should be thoroughly vacuumed to remove the allergens.
Don’t forget pelmets and pleats, great for harbouring unwanted pollen and dust!
If dust is an issue for your health, consider carpet rather than hardwood flooring.

Keep staking “soft” perennials and other tall plants. Select flowers and foliage to be used for indoor arrangements, best done early morning or evening.

Pick fruit and vegetables as ready, to keep produce fresh and tender. This also helps to let the rest develop and keep disease risk low. Summer prune apple, pear, cherry and plum trees to reduce earlier growth, thin stems and produce a better shape. Hang pheromone (attractant) traps if not already done. Protect fruit and vegetables from insect and bird pests.

Massage & A Healthy Immune System In a 2010 study, scientists at Cedars-Sinai (a hospital and research institute in Los Angeles) investigated the physical effects of massage therapy, finding that the 29 people who received 45 minutes of Swedish massage had an immune boosting response when compared to the 24 people who received 45 minutes of light touch. Hormones and blood cells were measured
before and after the massage, and at regular intervals up to one hour after the massage was done. “This research indicates that massage doesn’t only feel good, it also may be good for you,” explains Dr. Mark Rapaport, “People often seek out massage as part of a healthy lifestyle, but there hasn’t been much physiological proof of the body’s heightened immune response following massage until now.” The blood tests of participants who experienced Swedish massage showed changes indicating a benefit to the immune system, including a sizeable decrease in a hormone that contributes to aggressive behaviour. Scientists also noted a small decrease in the stress hormone cortisol. Interestingly, lymphocytes-cells that help the immune system defend the body from disease-also increased in the Swedish massage participants. Of important note is that these results were seen after a single massage. So, consider making massage therapy a regular part of your health and wellness.
