Dispatch Has a Sister Radio Media FineCity Magazine re-launches in Norwich.
Local radio stations owned nd run by local youth.
I am delighted to confirm Spider Media Solutions, who are the publishers of Dispatch Magazine, have successfully obtained the Norwich based magazine ‘FineCity’.
Tom Matthews is a 15 year old who is really making a name for himself. Tom has recently set up his own a radio station called Gizmo Radio and On The Chart, which are grouped with RadioMedia.
FineCity Magazine has been published in Norwich for the past few years, before its previous owner wound the title down last year. Spider Media Solutions has now taken over the title and will relaunch FineCity as a Community Lifestyle Magazine with effect from the May 2014 edition. FineCity will remain an A4, full colour, gloss lifestyle magazine, but will adopt a community feel based along the same lines as Dispatch Magazine which we have been publishing for the past 14 years. Dispatch Magazine’s ethos has always been to promote local events, clubs, organisations, charities and businesses. This will remain our sole focus with FineCity who already have a fantastic reputation in Norwich.
May 2014
FineCity will initially have a 10,000 print run, and will be available via collection points at: Theatre Royal, The Forum & Library, Waitrose at Eaton, John Lewis, CinemaCity, The Maddermarket, Norwich Airport and Castle Mall. We will also have Door to Door delivery in the Cringleford and Eaton area of Norwich which will increase by about 3,000 each month as we expand the area of delivery around the city. This is great news for existing Dispatch Magazine customers and rural businesses who wish to be promoted in our Fine City as we can now include you in this new publication as well as our family of Dispatch Magazines. Suffolk’s Artists Open Their Doors Over 130 Suffolk artists will be opening their studios to the public over the weekends of June as part of the long-running Suffolk Open Studios initiative. Spanning a huge range of art, including oils, watercolours, acrylics, photography, textiles, ceramics, jewellery, glassware, sculpture, 2D and 3D mixed media, printmaking, mosaics and much more, the Open Studios event grows bigger each year with more artists participating and more members of the public visiting the studios. Chairman of Suffolk Open Studios Tom Lund-Lack, who will also be exhibiting his own artwork at his residential art and activity centre ArtActiv at Thornham Magna, is passionate about the idea behind the initiative. “Art should be accessible,” he says. “This is a great opportunity for people to meet the artists, ask them questions about their inspiration and choice of medium. It’s welcoming, friendly and not at all pretentious. The whole point is that artists want people to come and visit them – artists welcome the chance to share their work with a wider audience.” Suffolk Open Studios has been running since 1993 and has grown from a group
of around 15 local artists in the Snape and Aldeburgh area. The network now covers the whole of Suffolk. More and more artists are collaborating these days to create a great experience for visitors, with artists trails incorporating several studios, some with refreshments provided. As Suffolk Open Studios covers such a big area, visitors are encouraged to use the guidebook and website in advance to check routes and opening hours, and to make a day of it, planning a route to visit a range of studios and a local pub or café for lunch. Tom says, “It’s a fun day out, and an opportunity to learn something new. There’s no pressure to buy, though many artists will have items available for sale or to commission if requested. Don’t be embarrassed to walk out of a studio with nothing in your hand, but with something in your head.” The Suffolk Open Studios committee is also keen to attract new artists to join. Tom says, “Creating art whether visual
or written is usually a lonely experience with only one’s own company to keep and judgement to fall back on. Being part of an open studio network can perhaps give artists a sense of belonging and of being part of a group of like-minded individuals.” All members are given exposure via the Open Studios website, which also publicises upcoming exhibitions, and they have the option of participation in the Open Studios event. Unlike some regional Open Studio operations, Suffolk’s invites members to join without a committee selection process. Again, Tom is keen to stress the inclusivity of the scheme: “As artists we are often our own harshest critic. We don’t put potential members through a rigorous selection process – if they consider their work to be of a high enough standard, that is fine by us.”
means different thing to different people. It’s subjective, so we don’t try to judge.” In the lead up to the Open Studios event, some artists will be participating in Art About Town, whereby they collaborate with friendly local shops, cafes and restaurants to exhibit work to help promote their work. Keep an eye out for artwork in towns near you, from 19-31 May 2014. As usual Suffolk Open Studios will be publishing a free colour directory of all exhibiting artists, which includes details on where they are located and when they will be open. This is the essential guide for all art lovers. There is no need to book when a studio is open, outside of those times it would be prudent to book a visit. Information is also available via the website www.suffolkopenstudios.org
“The website offers members and the public the chance to see the sorts of art on display and make decisions themselves. Art is a small word that

Hoxne Music Festival The small North Suffolk village of Hoxne has its own musical extravaganza A not to be missed once every two years event – which takes place at the end of next month. Top class artistes playing a wide variety to suit all musical tastes have been signed up to perform on three consecutive evenings – and there is the traditional free concert by local performers on the village green. Hoxne Music Festival this year takes place from Friday May 23 until Sunday May 25. Opening the festival at St Edmund’s hall will be an all female saxophone quartet, the Marici Saxes. Their repertoire ranges from jazz standards to classical and includes music from the shows too. They have performed on world tours with international pop artistes such as Sting and Seal. Alongside chamber music they also play regularly with orchestras such as the Royal Philharmonic and BBC Concert Orchestra. Saturday May 24 there will be music on the Hoxne village green from 12.30 with barbeque and refreshments available.
Castleton Brass Band, the Village Voices choir, a teenage brass quartet, a clarinet duo, and children from St Peter & St Paul primary school will be among the performers at this free three hour concert. The main attraction on Saturday evening May 24 will be the Mike Sanchez rhythm and blues and rock and roll band playing at St Edmund’s hall. The singer, boogie woogie pianist and guitarist is a charismatic and frenetic front man who has played with all the top names in the business. For four years he toured the world with Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings alongside Georgie Fame, Albert Lee, Beverly Skeete, Andy Fairweather-Low and Eddie Floyd. For classical music lovers the six piece Amphion Consort will take to the stage in St Peter and St Paul church on Sunday evening May 25. Their Heavenly Noyse concert will feature music from the Elizabethan era with little known instruments such as the cittern, bandora and bass viol as well as a lute, violin and flute.

Diss Museum Herr Flick, a Spitfire flypast and a performance by the Norwich Early Dance Group will be among the attractions on Sunday 1st June in Diss. The museum has put together an afternoon of activity to accompany putting the missing names on the war memorial, with funding from a dozen different sources. The dancers will perform in the Market Place from 2pm on the theme of the vanished England swept away by World War One, featuring dances mentioned in Thomas Hardy’s novels. Drama groups will be in attendance dressed in Edwardian costume, with the public also encouraged to dress up. A Spitfire will pass overhead between 2pm and 3pm. There will be a recruiting tent where prospective Tommies can have their medical and take the King’s shilling, or risk getting a white feather from stern Edwardian ladies. At 3pm the dancers and Royal British Legion will lead the way up to the war memorial, where celebrity guest Richard Gibson will read Arthur Machen’s story
The Bowmen, which may have led to the Angel of Mons legend. Richard Gibson is famous for playing Herr Flick in ‘Allo, ‘Allo, but will be appearing as himself. In his younger days he appeared in the films The GoBetween and England Made Me and the television series Children of the New Forest.
The museum will be open that afternoon, with the Family History Society in attendance to give advice on wartime research. World War One and airships are featured strongly in the museum displays. The Camera Club will make a photographic record of the day and
there will be an art exhibition on a WW1 theme, at the back of the church, by Diss High School pupils. This will be in place from the previous Tuesday. On Thursday afternoon, 22nd May, there is a tea dance in the Methodist Hall and a WW1 poetry evening at the Library on Friday evening, 30th May. We hope to see you there!
Like many of the celebrities who have appeared in Diss Museum events, he agreed to come for just expenses. After his reading there will be a short dedication by Canon Tony Billett and the unveiling of the new war memorial slabs. The work on these has been done by Perfitts. Weather permitting, period teas will be served on the church lawn by the new Fairchild’s Tea Rooms of St. Nicholas Street. Helen Kennett will sign copies of her book about her researches for the war memorial additions. There should also be a chance to get a signed photo of Herr Flick.
How To Be Good... ...Victorian Moral Style. For the March lecture on a fine if stormy Spring afternoon; Jo Walton related the story of morality through the narrative paintings of the Victorian era. In the times of Dickens, Trollope, Gaskell and Eliot painters picked up on the realism and satire of Hogarth to illustrate the moral line and the pitfalls of loose living. This was a world of cads, bounders and fallen women jostling with the gamblers, drinkers as well as the honest labourers and philosophers. Ms Walton, who has worked with Tate Britain and Dulwich Art Gallery for many years, started with the dislike in early nineteenth century society for being reminded of such aspects of “modern” life. But, as these genre representations became more acceptable and the realistic art championed by the the PreRaphealites gained favour, the shocking and the difficult developed as a style and a method of illustrating the misery of the sinful life and the rewards of moral behaviour. With a wealth of excellent examples of this narrative art by artists such as Martineau,
Holman-Hunt, Millais, Egg, Calderon, Hicks and Bowler, Jo told the stories in the paintings and the deep detail used by the artists to make their point. Even before photography, this style of depiction had sharp focus, well set scenes and dramatic realism. Using a lively and entertaining style each moral tale was re-told in the context of the artist and contemporary society. Another excellent lecture combining fun, education and appreciation of fine art. With the re-furbishment of the Village Hall in Royden, the April Lecture is postponed until July. The next lecture will be on Tuesday, 20th May 2014 when Nicholas Reed will look at the specialist work of war artists under the title “Spies and the Art of Deception”. The AGM of the Society will follow this meeting.
If you like stories about whistle-blowers, Mere Players latest production is a period piece with very modern relevancy. Spielberg used the same story for his classic film Jaws, swapping the poison in the water for a shark and there are echoes of Erin Brockovich’s tale of one person’s stand against the might of an all powerful corporation. Set in Norway in the 1880’s, An Enemy of the People by Henrik Ibsen, adapted by Arthur Miller, tells the story of a small town prospering from newly built spa waters. When the local Doctor discovers that all may not be well with the waters he shares
his findings with the relevant authorities expecting to be hailed a hero. Instead he finds himself isolated, vilified and standing alone against the town as an ‘enemy of the people’. The production dates are 7th, 8th, 9th & 10th May at Roydon Village Hall, 7.30 pm. Doors open at 7.00 pm , bar available. Tickets are available from the 1st April by contacting 07811140861 or www. mereplayers.com. Also on the door subject to availability on performance dates. This amateur production is presented by arrangement with Josef Weinberger Ltd.

Simplifying The New Tax Year The sun is out and the sky is blue (hopefully) and there won’t be much to spoil your view – unless you fall behind with your financial and tax affairs. There are many different types of people who need to act when the new tax year starts – whether it’s that you are starting a new business and think you might need to be registered as self employed, whether you are waiting for your P60 so that you can confirm your tax credits, whether it’s the end of your year and you need to do a stock take and get those final figures done. Whoever you are and whichever category you fit into, I bet you have loads to do. Maybe the start of a new tax year is a good time to get your affairs in order, whether it be thinking ahead and making provisions for any inheritance tax, whether it be investing some money into your ISA’s or whether it’s just checking your turnover to see whether you need to be VAT registered. Whatever it is, we at KBA are sure to be able to help and make things a lot more simple. Now last issue I talked about the P60’s and end of year returns – if you still haven’t received your P60 from your
employer you need to speak to them to ask if it is on its way. Of course if you are an employer and you haven’t done this yet – why not come and talk to us and we can help you file those returns, get the P60’s out to your employees and most importantly of all apply for that Employment Allowance. Why not talk to us to check that you qualify. Of course many self employed people use 5 April as their end of accounting year and this means that you can get everything up to date and hopefully get your accounts completed and tax calculated in time for the July tax credits deadline. Obviously if you don’t have to estimate your profit for tax credits this does make recording your income a lot easier. However if these figures are not completed in time, don’t panic, we at KBA are happy to try and help you estimate a figure for the tax credits department so that you don’t get overpaid and end up with money to pay back.
Shape up, move well
and feel good
If you have paid tax under the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) then you may well want your tax return submitting as soon as possible so that you can have any overpayments returned to you. There is nothing nicer than receiving that tax refund into your bank account. Here at KBA we have lots of different services we can help you with – far too many to fit in one editorial so why not give us a call and come and have a free hour’s consultation to find out just how we can help you. If you are just starting out with a new business we can advise you on the best time to register, the type of business you might want to be (sole trader, partnership, limited company etc) and whether or not it might be beneficial to register for voluntary VAT registration.
limited company then we can help you with this too, not to mention a good way to recover some of the money that you have invested in your business already. So whatever you are thinking of doing – starting a business, registering for VAT, taking on employees, changing to a partnership, buying a rental property, thinking of opting for a VAT scheme or help with book keeping and accounts – call us and we can help you. We want you to make the most of your money whatever you decide to do. Then you can sit back and enjoy the lovely summer weather with a glass of pimms and a champagne cocktail or two!
We can also help you with whether you need to register as an employer, the implications of this and also if you are a sole trader thinking of becoming a

Sound Sleep Bed Store Are you getting a good nights sleep? For most of us a third of our life is spent asleep, meaning the wear on our mattress over time is considerable, yet a staggering 25% of people wouldn’t consider changing their mattress – even after more than 10 years.* It is hardly surprising then that 58% of the population complain of waking feeling stiff and achy.* How do you know if you need to replace your bed? • Is your bed more than 7 years old? • Is it uncomfortable? Or when you sleep in someone else’s bed, does that feel better than your own? • Do you wake in the morning with a painful back or stiff limbs? • Can you feel the springs beneath the surface of the mattress? • Do you and your partner roll together? • Is your mattress just generally warn and discoloured? If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, then it could be time to invest in a new bed!
May 2014
The key with mattress buying is to try out as wide a variety of options as possible to find the most suitable mattress for you (and your partner). Given the amount of time you spend in bed, it is important to spend a reasonable amount of time in store trying out new ones, especially if you have been experiencing pains that could come from your existing mattress. It this instance, it may be worth having a chat with your chiropractor for some advise on what they advise is suitable for your back. At Sound Sleep, we stock a variety of brands and different types of mattresses, for example pocket sprung, memory foam, latex and so on. Each manufacturer has different mattresses that offer different levels of support and comfort. When mattress shopping, it is essential to ask for help. We are highly trained mattress specialists and are on hand to advise you, not to high pressure you in to buying something that may not be suitable.
How do I know which one is right for me? A mattress that is supportive and comfortable is important, but remember, your requirement for support will differ depending on your weight and build. The best bed for your back is not always a firm one. You need a bed that will provide the right support and comfort for you. When laying on your side, ideally your spine should be parallel to the mattress and your spine should not sag down or bow up. Trying them out Give your self plenty of time and wear loose clothing, this helps you turn and get in and out of beds in store. Our Mattress Specialists will point you in the right direction. Try the advised mattresses for as long as possible to get a good ‘feel’ for them. If you sleep together, shop together Always shop with your partner, the bed
must be suitable for both of you. As it is inevitable one of you may have to compromise! Size matters It is scientifically proven that couples sleep better in a bigger bed. The more space you have the freer you can move without disturbing your partner. This is also a good idea if one or both of you get hot in bed. Now that you have chosen a new mattress, don’t forget that pillows are very important too. A cheap, unsupportive pillow can cause neck and back problems. For more help and advise, visit our in store Mattress Specialists who can talk you through all the pros and cons of various mattresses. We also pride ourselves on having the most up to date mattress technology. Geltex launches this month, come in and try it! Sleep has never felt so good!! *Research by British Chiropractic Association and Sealy 2012

Can Any Sacrifice Be Justified? It is a question as relevant to modern times as it was at the beginning of WW1 Rudyard Kipling, famed for his classic stories such as ‘The Jungle Books’ and ‘Kim’ as well as his poetry such as the internationally loved ‘If’, was incredibly influential in the recruitment of troops and the propaganda office during The Great War. Perhaps less well known, is the enormous impact that the war had on him and his family. Old Buckenham Players are bringing this incredibly moving and challenging story to life in the play ‘My Boy Jack’ by David Haig (Thin Blue Line, Four Weddings and a Funeral) which was also made into a highly acclaimed TV film which starred Daniel Radcliffe, Carey Mulligan and Kim Cattrall as well as David Haig himself.

Remembering Ryan Norwich Sunblinds are very grateful for the support of our customers over the last few years. As everyone knows the economy has been difficult, and without our loyal customers we would not have survived during the last few challenging years. With this in mind we have decided that we would like to give back to the local community, so over the next few months we will contribute £1.00 for every blind and pair of curtains we sell this year to local charities.
Each month we will be supporting a different local charity. Our staff are all excited to find out each day how many blinds/curtains have been sold to contribute towards the Charity. We wanted to support Remembering Ryan, for Meningitis Research Foundation, and in March we raised £936. We wish them every success, and commend them on the brilliant work that they do
Attleborough Heritage Group Memories of Attleborough since 1950 On Saturday 22 March 2014, a hundred and sixty members and friends of Attleborough Heritage Group met in the Connaught Hall in Attleborough to enjoy an illustrated talk, combining the heritage of the Town with the personal memories of its present citizens. Using comments from Attleborough Heritage Group’s extremely popular “Memories of Attleborough” social networking page to add eye witness detail to a traditional trawl through the memories of a Norfolk market town over the past sixty years, Chairman Cliff Amos entertained the intrigued audience as he presented a nostalgic view of people, places and events in the Town since 1950. Set against the major changes in the development of this historic Town, many of the audience saw themselves on screen in school photographs, carnival processions, their workplaces and

various other locations in the Town. The talk was further enhanced by direct comments from the Facebook page which triggered more memories and remarks by audience members. The talk was followed by further opportunity to reminisce and view the extensive photographic display. East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) Supportng families and caring for children and young people with life-threatening conditions across Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk. The charity relies on voluntary donations for the majority of its income and needs to raise almost £6 million to deliver their services this year. Some of the children and young people who receive EACH care and support only have a short time to live, while others may reach early adulthood, but our aim is always the same – to enhance their quality of life and support their families. Lucy Allinson is 14 years old and receives many services including short break overnight and day care, music therapy and specialist play. Her parents Heather and Martin, as well as siblings Sophie and Max, have benefited from family support sessions. Lucy has epileptic seizures on a daily basis, which are difficult to control, and she uses a wheelchair for mobility.
“Lucy has a great time at the hospice and we know she’s well looked after. EACH helps us to create lovely memories and has played an important part in all of our lives, not just Lucy’s.”
Your Gift of Care will make a big difference:
If you’d like to help families like Lucy’s, you could make an EACH Gift of Care – it’s a great way of making a donation instead of giving traditional presents for any occasion.
£10 – meals for all family members staying at the hospice.
£5 – art supplies for a specialist play session.
£37 – a music therapy session. £74 – two hours of bereavement support for all family members. £148 – four hours of care at end of life.
£20 – an essential care kit for our nurses when providing care in the family home.

Lucy’s mum Heather said: “The hospice is a great social environment as well as offering nursing care. Children like Lucy don’t go to sleepovers or to their friends for tea, so the interaction she has at the hospice is priceless.

Attleborough Amateur Boxing Club awarded £50,000 of funding from Sport England Attleborough Amateur Boxing Club is among 324 local sports projects to secure a share of £17 million of National Lottery funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund. Since 2011, Inspired Facilities has been helping breathe new life into tired community sports facilities and converting existing buildings into venues suitable for grassroots sport. With the funding the Club will be building an extension onto it’s Gym which will virtually double it’s current size. The new extension will house a specialist Strength & Conditioning room, create additional floor space to hold another fullsize training ring and also house a brand new classroom facility.
Club Chairman, Jeremy Burton, said: “We are delighted to have secured this investment, which means we can upgrade the quality of our premises to match the quality of our boxing coaches..” Jenny North, Member, Breckland Council, Queens Ward, Attleborough said “Attleborough ABC continues to go from strength to strength. With this latest grant the Club can continue it’s upward progress which provides an outstanding facility for Attleborough and the surrounding area.”
England Boxing Chief Executive Officer Mark Abberley said: “Attleborough Boxing Club is an asset to its local community.”
The Attleborough Town Mayor said: “I am extremely pleased to see how well the Boxing club has done.”
“This funding will ensure that the excellent work done by the club’s volunteers is complimented by a fantastic new facility that caters for the needs of its current members and encourages more young people in Attleborough to take part in a great sport. I’d like to congratulate the club on their successful application and look forward to seeing their new facilities.”
“They have grown from nothing in just a few years to what is without doubt one of the best boxing clubs in the region. We are very lucky to have this facility and are grateful to Jeremy Burton and Peter Neal for all their hard work and their tireless fundraising.”
Sport England Property Director, Charles Johnston, said: “The Inspired Facilities Fund has had a huge impact on grassroots sport across the country. Since 2011, we’ve invested £88 million into more than 1,600 projects to improve and refurbish sports clubs and transform non-sporting venues into vibrant community sports clubs.
“A big thank you to all the local businesses who also support the club without which this would not have happened. This really shows what a great community Attleborough is.” www.attleboroughamateurboxingclub.co.uk Tel: 01953 457329

Suffolk & Norfolk Youth Action We are a group of young people that run a dynamic organisation called Suffolk and Norfolk Youth Action The group received a grant from the Breckland Youth Advisory Board- Young Commissioners in 2012 to establish a Youth Forum in the Market Town of Attleborough in Norfolk. We then spent the next twelve months supporting local campaigns and good causes. We are a community based youth group managed by a volunteer executive board of political councillors, youth workers, business people and young people themselves. The group was established in 2004 with the aim of providing positive activities for rurally isolated young people, with SNYA Radio coming along in 2008. BBC Radio Norfolk’s Stephen Bumfry with Robert and Rebecca Thomas Georgina McLaren said “Through a committed group of young people, based at our offices in Attleborough and Long Stratton, we produce an online youth newspaper, broadcast from two radio studios and offer recording facilities at our Attleborough offices. We utilise our mobile studio and remote broadcasting equipment to engage with many more rurally isolated young people across Norfolk and Suffolk.” Musicians and vocalists are able to record their extended play (EP) or

Window Geeks “Replacing your steamed-up windows doesn’t mean you have to replace the whole window…Save thousands by changing only the glass”… It can be stressful when things break or go wrong, especially when it seems the only solution comes at great expense. Unexpected bills can hit households very hard at a time when every penny counts and it means that thousands of homeowners put off fixing their windows or doors for fear of the high costs usually associated with these types of products... Well now you can relax…because WindowGeeks, a national window, door and conservatory repair specialist, has expanded into Norwich and will service the whole of the Norfolk region, giving local home owners access to real money-saving options; one that can reduce what could be an alarming bill in the thousands to a far more acceptable one in the low hundreds - and in most cases even lower than that. The fact is that the average single repair or replacement undertaken by WindowGeeks, which includes locks, handles and hinges, as well as the usual replacement of steamed-up double glazed units is less
than £60...not surprising really when you consider that the replacement of a single steamed-up double glazed window starts from as low as £30 including VAT and fitting…which is why, at this point, many people take the opportunity to upgrade to energy efficient double glazed units. Our new local and experienced team, headed up by Steve Olley, join all of our other skilled craftsmen and women throughout the UK, each providing a professional and cost effective service to 1,000s of customers from Plymouth in the Southwest, through Norwich in the East, up to Preston in the North and all points in-between… “Lots of people have problems with their windows,” says Steve, “They get steamed-up and won’t clear, or the locks stick or the handles get loose…and it becomes even more of a problem at this time of year when cold draughts get through...but what’s really surprising is that most people don’t realise that all of these problems can be fixed quickly and without spending a fortune or having to
sell one or more of their children, unless they want to of course”… WindowGeeks has over 38 years’ experience in the glazing industry and it’s sad to think that there are still quite a few traditional window companies that either refuse or just don’t want to carryout repairs…now were not saying that all double glazing companies don’t carry out repairs, many do, and do a great job, but Steve adds, “In most cases they’re not really interested in the smaller jobs and that’s what’s so great about WindowGeeks, we offer a real cost-effective solution, which makes it a very easy decision for our customers to choose us...there’s no pressure sales from us because there’s no viable alternative, unless, that is, you want to spend 10, 20 or even 100 times more on replacing all your double glazing!” While the cost savings might be the biggest draw, there’s another reason customers should choose WindowGeeks and one that has inevitably convinced many customers throughout the UK to use us;
“It’s all about honesty and trust,” says Steve. “There’s integrity in what WindowGeeks do and that’s very important to me, we tell the truth, only charge for what needs doing and we always honour our promises…We run a very successful and ethical business based on good old fashioned customer service backed up with top quality products and support from our head office.” WindowGeeks provides free quotations with; • No call out charges • No credit card charges • No deposits • No minimum order values, • No high pressure sales men or women • No hidden extras • 10 year guarantee on all glazed products All our quotes include VAT and Fitting Call now for a FREE QUOTE on 0800 61 22 943 or visit us at www.windowgeeks.co.uk

May: The Bittern By Ed Parnell of Norfolk Wildlife Trust Visit some of the larger reedbeds of the Broads in May, particularly early in the morning or around dusk, and there’s every chance you’ll hear a strange booming sound, reminiscent of someone blowing across the top of an empty bottle: the breeding call of the male bittern, one of the UK’s rarest and most unusual birds. The bittern is a member of the heron family, but differs widely in its plumage from the commonly-encountered grey heron. Bitterns have a light, straw coloured base colour, which is exotically streaked with darker, almost-black, lines and chevrons. The overall effect is exceptionally cryptic and it is little wonder that the bird blends so effortlessly into its favoured reedbed habitat. Although bitterns have a long neck, which they stretch out vertically to mimic their surroundings when alarmed, they never appear as tall and elegant as herons. Indeed, in certain poses they almost seem to take on a rather hunched, owllike appearance. What never changes is the lethal dagger-like bill, which is used to
impale unfortunate frogs, fish and small mammals with lethal precision. As to the bittern’s boom, this remarkable sound is produced when the courting male bird exhales air from its oesophagus. The noise, usually repeated in short sequences of three or four chimes, has the lowest frequency of any note produced by a British bird and can be heard from up to 3 miles away. Bitterns were a common bird in medieval times, when wetland and reedbed in places like the Fens was much more prevalent. They were also considered a great delicacy for the table and eaten in large numbers (sometimes hundreds at a time) at medieval banquets. Overhunting, along with the loss of its habitat, factored in its decline and by the end of the Victorian age, the species had disappeared as a British breeding bird.
increase in numbers over the following decades (with Norfolk the UK stronghold), the species began a severe downward spiral in the late 1960s. By 2010 the UK population contained just 14 booming male birds. However, dedicated conservation work (including generous EU funding) has helped to turn things around so that in 2011 the UK population of the species reached 104 males, with 23 of these in Norfolk. These are centred around the
Broads, with smaller numbers in suitable habitat along the north Norfolk coast at sites such as NWT Cley Marshes and NWT Holme Dunes. The best places to hear the species though (for they are very hard to see, unless you happen to be in the right place at the right time) is in the Broads, with NWT Hickling Broad offering a very good chance. Discover more about Norfolk’s wildlife and ask us any questions you may have at www.norfolkwildlifetrust.org.uk

The Action Cream Tea Box Children’s charity urges local residents to put the kettle on and enjoy a scrumptious Cream Tea. A UK children’s charity is calling on residents and businesses in Norfolk and Suffolk to take a break!
So, schedule in a get together with friends and neighbours over a brew whilst doing your bit for charity.
Action Medical Research today launches its 2014 traditional cream teas in a box – delivering direct to doors throughout the land on Thursday 19 June.
This important, and truly scrumptious, annual fundraiser for the charity, represents the Best of British; providing freshly baked scones and luxury products to guarantee the taste buds will tingle.
Hailed by previous customers as the “perfect treat in a box”, the organisers are urging all to treat themselves and indulge in one of their Cream Teas.
British celebrity chef Lesley Waters is this year supporting the Action Cream Teas. Well-known for her regular television
appearances on Ready Steady Cook, Great Food Live and This Morning, Lesley is also a former Head Tutor of Leith’s School of Food & Wine, author of several Cookery Books, a qualified Fitness Instructor and a mother of two! She says: “I’m delighted to support Action Medical Research’s Cream Teas delivery service. My own style is simple, fun and all about great food. And the Action Cream Teas really are the perfect afternoon treat in a box – and what better way to indulge than with a Cream Tea for charity!” “So why not get together with work mates, or a bunch of friends at home, and enjoy a luxury Cream Tea delivered to your door. Just put the kettle on, relax, have a chat and help raise vital funds for the children’s charity.” Research is the key to saving many children from a lifetime of suffering. Yet surprisingly, medical research into conditions that devastate children’s lives is poorly funded. Action Medical Research is currently funding work around stillbirth,
epilepsy, meningitis, cerebral palsy and brain cancer, as well as some rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children. Each Action Cream Tea box contains: two freshly baked scones, Rodda’s Cornish clotted cream, fresh strawberries, two small jars of strawberry jam from Tiptree, wrapped Yorkshire teabag, knife and serviette. Minimum order of 10, £6 per box, delivered by Parcelforce. Order online by Friday 6 June 2014 at www.action.org. uk/time4tea

Make a butterfly mobile to brighten a bed room, or do something ‘big and easy’ with old wallpaper! Print out pictures to cut and colour. 2. Memories Box/Scrapbook Go through old photos of when they were babies, toddlers. Also special people, places and special occasions in their lives. Stick them in a jotter, or cover a shoe box with wrapping paper, or find a special place to keep them together. Treasure Baskets are good for babies. Spend the morning building various Treasure Baskets. Then you can bring them out while you have a restful lunch time.
3. Swimming Swimming is a great activity for families with kids of different age groups and you’ll come out feeling fresh and glowing. Look for splash sessions/kids sessions which work out cheaper. 4. The park Bring a selection of scooters, dolls prams, balls, chalks, frisbee, skipping rope and so on... 5. On yer bike Are your bikes gathering dust in the garage? Get them out and if you have room, bring them indoors and put then upside down on newspaper. Give them a clean and polish then take them out. There’s much to explore! 6. Get down on the farm Most of the farms aimed at children and families are open all year round and a spring day is a great time to visit. Spot the new baby lambs and try to resist bringing one home!

Bach’s stunning piece for keyboards Goldberg Variations also headlines the orchestra’s first 2015 visit to the theatre on March 21. There is plenty of entertainment for all the family during the summer holidays. Angelina Ballerina and her friends get the call to star in hit TV show Dancing With Mice in their latest family adventure which takes to the stage on August 24-25. The all-new Peppa Pig’s Big Splash arrives in the city on August 27-28 which sees Peppa and her friends have lots of fun with wellies, brollies and muddy puddles. The high-energy stage spectacular West Side Story and the RSC’s powerful productions are both sure to be highly sought-after productions for our patrons around the region. “This comes on top of some great onstage comedy and drama, a feast for fans of opera and dance, and lots of family entertainment too. “Our box office is expecting bumper business when these productions go on sale as we continue to try and bring some of this country’s finest theatre and performance to our fine city.”
There is comedy too with the chance to see part of the 60th series of BBC Radio 4 hit I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue being recorded featuring the likes of Jack Dee, Barry Cryer, Graeme Garden and Tim Brooke-Taylor (April 24), 8 Out Of 10 Cats captain and stand-up favourite Jon Richardson live on stage (August 2), and the wild-haired King of comedy improv Ross Noble (October 19).

30 MOTORING REVIEW
www.DispatchMagazine.co.uk
Mercedes-Benz SLK 250 CDI If you really like driving then a roadster is the sort of car you probably desire – unless there’s one in your garage already. There’s something intoxicating about two-up, open-top motoring. Traditionally, these cars are powered with petrol. But Mercedes-Benz has gone one further with its SLK 250 CDI Roadster and fitted a diesel engine into it. While oilburning drop-tops have been a premium manufacturer product for a few years now, this is the first two-seat, rear-drive convertible that runs on the stuff. The 204 bhp four-cylinder lump puts the Mercedes-Benz at the top of its class in several respects. With an average fuel consumption of 56.5 mpg it’s the most economical roadster in its sector. The frugal fuel drinking makes the SLK 250 CDI a car with superior long-distance qualities. It is for example quite possible to drive from the North Sea in the UK to a beach on the Mediterranean nonstop. Supportive sports seats, a decent suspension setup and the largest luggage capacity in this car category also do their bit to create the right conditions. I drove the 250 CDI AMG Sport model. Thanks to bags of low down shove and a 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission, it accelerates from 0-62 mph in 6.7 seconds. This means the car has another feather in its cap: it’s the most powerful diesel model in its class. The result is
the same electrifying look for which all the SLK models are known. To be honest, there are so few areas for criticism. The motor is what it is: a two-seater sports car, so there’s little point moaning about lack of space for the dog and kids. Sure, I can see some petrol-purists turning their nose up at a diesel offering, but with the SLK 250 CDI’s pulling power and economy, it’s obvious why it’s such a good choice – even if you do need over £35k to afford a new one. PROS ‘N’ CONS dramatic driving enjoyment both on twisty country roads and motorway stretches. As it shares the same genes as other members of the SLK family, the 250 CDI combines its alert acceleration with stylish comfort, a stunning sports car design and day-to-day suitability. The SLK 250 CDI is available with a choice of three versions of the German motor-manufacturer’s famous vario-roof – one of them the panoramic vario-roof with Magic Sky Control. This glass top can be changed from dark to transparent at the touch of a button. It’s clever stuff – especially if the weather means you can’t drop the roof but you still want to feel natural light flooding into the cabin.
There are also three suspension versions available: a conventional steel suspension, a sports suspension with a stiffer spring and damper setup or a suspension with an electronically controlled, automatic damping system. The latter is part of the Dynamic Handling package, which also includes the Direct-Steer system and the Torque Vectoring Brake developed by Mercedes-Benz for particularly responsive and predictable handling characteristics. The SLK 250 CDI went on sale in 2012, yet it still looks like it’s just rolled out of the Mercedes-Benz design studios. Externally it’s no different in appearance from the petrol models. It even retains the twin exhaust system, and therefore has
