Diss Museum This year marks the centenary of my family, Abbott, coming to Diss. My grandfather, Amos Abbott, came from Leigh-on-Sea to be waterworks engineer in 1914. He was not the first in the post, but probably the second, as the waterworks had only been built in 1912. I have often wondered how the large family arrived in town with all their belongings; but this is not the kind of thing you think to ask while your parents are still alive. Not that my Dad would have remembered, being a baby at the time. My father had five brothers, known as: Fred, Len, Wilf, Frank and Buddy; and two sisters: Ede and Cis. All of the children who were still young enough went to the Church School and would work locally. My Dad left school at 14, worked in Bardwell’s timber yard in Church Street and was in wood for much of his life. He was a Corporal in the Royal Engineers during WW2 and was almost left behind at Dunkirk. He fell asleep while awaiting embarkation. Luckily two pals noticed

that he was missing and went back for him. They came back on a destroyer called the Shikari, standing shoulder-to-shoulder, some of them asleep on their feet. He was posted to Northern Ireland where he met my mother. They had four children. I was the first of the family to go to university, although I was a factory worker until I was 24. My brothers, nephews and niece would all go on to gain degrees. When I visit my brother’s house in Edinburgh I am struck by the metamorphosis through education. What began in the Edwardian working class, had become a book-lined, Guardian-reading household, with music and talk and confident, articulate children. They are allowed to grow up and do what they want to do, without guilt or regret, while still remaining a close family. Basil Abbott

Apart from the manufacturer’s guarantee of quality on a sale, they are a useful device to enable a particular transaction to proceed which would not otherwise have done. In commerce this could be where a bank loan to a limited company would not be made unless the directors gave personal guarantees that the loan would be repaid according to its terms. In your personal life you would not want to be involved in giving a guarantee lightly but it may be necessary for example if one of your children is required to have a guarantor for a tenancy while a student. A guarantor promises the lender/landlord (the creditor) that the borrower/tenant (debtor) will perform their obligations and if not that they will perform them on their behalf. A guarantee should be in writing to be enforceable, and does provide the guarantor with certain rights. For example once the guarantor has fulfilled the debtor’s obligations they can seek an indemnity for repayment from the debtor. The guarantor also has the right of subrogation, to stand in the shoes of the debtor, so can set off any debts owed by the creditor to the debtor and take over the security the creditor may have obtained over the debtor’s property .The

obligations of the guarantor continue even if the debtor should become insolvent. Of course not all guarantees result in payment by the guarantor being required by the creditor. If it is it may be very important to see if there is a way to argue that the guarantee may have been discharged as the sums at stake could be significant, This could result in litigation and there are many reported cases For further information contact Paul Stevens on 01379 643555 or email to paul.stevens@jackamans.co.uk. Diss To Raise Council Tax At the November council meeting, Diss councillors felt it neccesary to incease the precept for the coming year The amount to be received from the District Council to Town and Parish Councils is estimated to decrease by 14% this year. A one-off grant given by South Norfolk Council to offset last years’ impact is likely not to be received again this year; therefore, the Council has recognised that they are going to be £20,000 short of last years budget. The total needed for capital maintenance projects will be approximately £300,000, which will only be achieved by capital loan. The Corn Hall requires approximately £200,000 for maintenance projects which is the council’s liability. Councillors were reminded that the government’s contribution through grant was most likely going to be reduced year on year, which will influence town council budgets. The councillors need to create a balance so that the secretary of state cannot order the town and parish councils to hold a referendum if council taxes are

increased excessively. (Localism act 2011, Sch 5) It was agreed that Diss Town Council contributes £200,000 to the Heritage Triangle Project, by means of a capital loan, as it is the main property owner to benefit from the project. It was also resolved by a majority vote (8/3 in favour) that the council combine minimal precept increases whilst also reducing services by recommending a maximum precept percentage increase on this financial year of 5.7% We welcome Diss resident’s comments on this decision. The process of selling at craft shows can be daunting for many people. Nothing is more soul destroying that setting up your wares and coming home with it all at the end of the day. Sometimes that fear is enough to put people off from even trying. For those who do try and come home disappointed, it may not be the goods they are selling that prevented sales. There are some basic rules of selling at craft shows for any chance of success. Knowing the type of buyers that you are likely to encounter is one of the best ways to increase your chance of good sales. Try to get a sense of what sort of crowd you are going to encounter and what other crafts are likely to be there. This way you

We deliver a quality service in the comfort of your own home, where we will measure while you look through our books to choose a fabric you like, and check it against your décor to make

can either cater your product selection to that crowd or head to a craft show more likely to appeal to your products. One of the biggest hindrances to sales is inflexibility over pricing. The problem with homemade crafts is setting the price low enough to attract buyers but high enough to cover the cost of production, both in terms of money and time. The fact is that you may not get the price that you would hope for. There are two options when it comes to setting a price. Many craft sellers don’t put price tags on their items. This can help to open a friendly dialogue up between seller and buyer and allows you to be more flexible over the price, depending upon how low you are prepared to go to secure a sale. However, this can be frustrating for potential buyers, especially if you’re busy. Another good sellers’ trick is to create coordinating items so you can offer buyers a deal to buy more than one piece. Customers like getting a bundled deal and you will sell more for just a little discount.

Febuary Shows At Rock Choir Offers You Norwich Theatre Royal Hope For A Peaceful Night Sleep With an eclectic mix of thrilling stage shows, Norwich Theatre Royal is offering something for just about everyone in February. There will be laughs aplenty as Barry Humphries’ Farewell Tour brings the curtain down on Dame Edna Everage and the rest of his comic creations on February 4-8 and comedy duo Punt & Dennis take their slick satirical stand-up to the stage on February 9. The toe-tapping swing of Rat Pack Live on February 2 is the first of a troupe of musical acts, with Classic Rock arriving on February 10 to showcase their renditions of some of rock music’s greatest albums and Mike & The Mechanics celebrating their 30th anniversary with none other than Lady Grantham from Downton Abbey – Elizabeth McGovern and her band Sadie and the Hotheads – as the warm-up act on February 16. Tribute act ‘Rumours of Fleetwood Mac’ complete the set on February 24. Fans of great visual spectacles will be treated on February 13-15 to Cirque

Berserk, the touring circus troupe whose show features the terrifying Motorcycle Globe of Death and Guinness World Record holding strongman Hercules. Following that, it’s a double bill of dance, with the mesmeric and elegant Russian State Ballet & Orchestra of Siberia performing three classics of the genre between February 17-19; Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker and Swan Lake, and Richard Alston Dance Company returning on February 20-21 to pay homage to Mozart, as well as Benjamin Britten in his centenary year. Finishing off the month from February 26-March 1 are the grippingly gruesome Horrible Histories team with their Barmy Britain show, featuring ‘horrible’ Henry VIII, ‘gunpowder’ Guy Fawkes and ‘dastardly’ Dick Turpin alongside more of Britain’s most famous and infamous figures from history.

An unusual yet entertaining way to combat interrupted sleep If you suffer from snoring or are fed up at being kept awake by your partner’s nocturnal noises, joining your local Rock Choir could be the answer to uninterrupted sleep. Joining the nation’s favourite contemporary choir can help boost people’s mental health and wellbeing. Plus, scientific research has shown that singing can also help reduce snoring! Local Rock Choir leader Ian Sainsbury explains: “Singing helps to exercise and strengthen muscles in the soft palette, which is where the snoring vibration occurs. A study carried out by the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust, found preliminary evidence that regular singing exercises may benefit people who snore. This prompted us to ask Rock Choir members whether they or their partners had noticed any improvements in their snoring since joining. Over 10% of respondents said yes. We’re always receiving emails and letters from choir members telling us how much being in Rock Choir is helping them to feel happier, increase their confidence and even lose weight. So this is yet another bonus!” Rock Choir member Dagmar Rathbone says her husband has noticed a difference since she joined Rock Choir: “Apparently my snoring is now quieter, “says Dagmar. “My husband says I’ve gone from a tank to a motorbike!” Another Rock Choir member, Viv Feeley, says her snoring has reduced since joining. “I’m now thinking of getting my husband to join Rock Choir too!” she says. Ian runs Rock Choir’s fun, weekly sessions in Beccles, Norwich, Thorpe

February 2014

and Wymondham. “We’re always looking for new members and husbands and partners are very welcome to join us,” he says. “They can even try a free taster session first. I can’t guarantee they’ll stop snoring, but I can say that they’ll have a great time singing. Time and time again I see how singing with Rock Choir helps improve people’s self-confidence and gives them wonderful sense of fulfilment and wellbeing. It’s a great way of letting off steam and enjoying some time out each week.” Rock Choir is the UK’s largest contemporary choir, with more than 16,000 members in over 250 local communities. There are no auditions and no requirements to read music or have any previous singing experience. Rock Choir members get together each week to attend fun, friendly rehearsals where they are taught specially arranged pop and rock songs. There are lots of exciting performances throughout the year and many of them help raise money for charity. Just before Christmas, 275 Rock Choir members sang on the last ever The One Show to be presented from the iconic BBC Television Centre. Presenters Chris Evens and Alex Jones both tweeted about Rock Choir’s performance. Rock Choir’s new term starts from week beginning January 13, and anyone interested in joining can book a free taster session at any time. To book or find out more, just Telephone 01252 714 276 or visit Rock Choir’s website www.rockchoir.com and click the ‘find your nearest choir’ link to get details of dates, times and rehearsal venues.

Window Geeks “Replacing your steamed-up windows doesn’t mean you have to replace the whole window…Save thousands by changing only the glass”… It can be stressful when things break or go wrong, especially when it seems the only solution comes at great expense. Unexpected bills can hit households very hard at a time when every penny counts and it means that thousands of homeowners put off fixing their windows or doors for fear of the high costs usually associated with these types of products... Well now you can relax…because WindowGeeks, a national window, door and conservatory repair specialist, has expanded into Norwich and will service the whole of the Norfolk region, giving local home owners access to real money-saving options; one that can reduce what could be an alarming bill in the thousands to a far more acceptable one in the low hundreds - and in most cases even lower than that. The fact is that the average single repair or replacement undertaken by WindowGeeks, which includes locks, handles and hinges, as well as the usual replacement of steamed-up double glazed units is less

than £60...not surprising really when you consider that the replacement of a single steamed-up double glazed window starts from as low as £30 including VAT and fitting…which is why, at this point, many people take the opportunity to upgrade to energy efficient double glazed units. Our new local and experienced team, headed up by Steve Olley, join all of our other skilled craftsmen and women throughout the UK, each providing a professional and cost effective service to 1,000s of customers from Plymouth in the Southwest, through Norwich in the East, up to Preston in the North and all points in-between… “Lots of people have problems with their windows,” says Steve, “They get steamed-up and won’t clear, or the locks stick or the handles get loose…and it becomes even more of a problem at this time of year when cold draughts get through...but what’s really surprising is that most people don’t realise that all of these problems can be fixed quickly and without spending a fortune or having to

sell one or more of their children, unless they want to of course”… WindowGeeks has over 38 years’ experience in the glazing industry and it’s sad to think that there are still quite a few traditional window companies that either refuse or just don’t want to carryout repairs…now were not saying that all double glazing companies don’t carry out repairs, many do, and do a great job, but Steve adds, “In most cases they’re not really interested in the smaller jobs and that’s what’s so great about WindowGeeks, we offer a real cost-effective solution, which makes it a very easy decision for our customers to choose us...there’s no pressure sales from us because there’s no viable alternative, unless, that is, you want to spend 10, 20 or even 100 times more on replacing all your double glazing!” While the cost savings might be the biggest draw, there’s another reason customers should choose WindowGeeks and one that has inevitably convinced many customers throughout the UK to use us;

“It’s all about honesty and trust,” says Steve. “There’s integrity in what WindowGeeks do and that’s very important to me, we tell the truth, only charge for what needs doing and we always honour our promises…We run a very successful and ethical business based on good old fashioned customer service backed up with top quality products and support from our head office.” WindowGeeks provides free quotations with; • No call out charges • No credit card charges • No deposits • No minimum order values, • No high pressure sales men or women • No hidden extras • 10 year guarantee on all glazed products All our quotes include VAT and Fitting Call now for a FREE QUOTE on 0800 61 22 943 or visit us at www.windowgeeks.co.uk

Designing A Future In Norfolk There’s no place like home for Wymondham based graphic design company KSD Associates. Having returned to his Norfolk roots two years ago, owner Kevin Smith is taking the business from strength to strength and is committed to helping support the local economy.

were happening elsewhere in the country. I trained at Norwich School of Art & Design and have always felt a strong affinity with Norfolk. So I relocated the business and we’ve never looked back.”

Since KSD started trading 10 years ago, the world of graphic design has changed dramatically. London’s dominance as the ‘place to be’ is rapidly diminishing. With digital artwork and online communications, graphic design agencies like KSD can be effective anywhere in the country, offering high quality service to local businesses as well as a wider national marketplace.

Closer relationships

As a result, regional cities such as Norwich have become hubs of design excellence, with the creative energy they generate inevitably pulsing out into the wider regional community. “Having worked in London agencies, it seemed natural for me to choose a base close to the capital when I launched KSD a decade ago,” says Kevin. “However, two years ago I realised that, mainly because of the internet revolution, exciting things

February 2014

Being close at hand, Kevin can get to know his Norfolk based clients better, to understand how their businesses work and what they are aiming to achieve. “There’s no substitute for personal contact, “ he says. “I like to build close working relationships with my clients. I’m also committed to using local suppliers and partners to help support the regional economy.” With lower overheads, KSD can offer high standards of creativity and project management at an affordable price. Therefore, as well as continuing to work with existing London-based clients, the company can cost-effectively service the needs of local businesses who may have limited marketing budgets.

“It’s all about matching our skills to the available spend“ asserts Kevin. “Because we combine creativity with commercial awareness, we can create eye-catching yet practical solutions for anything from a full marketing campaign to a brochure, website or e-shot.” An integrated approach As well as taking advantage of increased mobility, KSD has also embraced the opportunities available in online design media. Most businesses are now integrating new and traditional marketing methods.

That’s why we think laterally, combining online and offline media to create impact and get maximum response.” The results speak for themselves. KSD has successfully designed everything from brochures for skiing holidays to websites for organisations that run religious missions, from branding and identity for small service businesses to e-newsletters for major corporations. So what does the future hold for this dynamic business? “As long as the world continues to move forward, so will we,” confirms Kevin.

Therefore, to be competitive graphic design companies must offer a one-stop service to provide coherent, cohesive strategy and execution.

“Right now everyone’s talking about apps for smartphones and tablets. Then there are revolutionary new technologies, such as augmented reality”

“We’ve evolved our business for today’s world,” explains Kevin. “We understand how important the web and social media have become to many companies. Yet we know that traditional marketing methods still have an important role to play”

“Whatever the next big thing is, we’ll take it and run with it. The media may change, but good design never goes out of fashion.” Tel - 01953 601757

Norfolk & Suffolk Power Flushing

A Look At Motor Insurance!

Any of these symptoms in my advert could indicate that your central heating system has problems from internal corrosion, rust, sludge and scale.

Whether you are a convicted driver, young driver, or have limited no claims bonus, we can find the policy cover specific to your requirements.

A power flush can restore circulation and efficiency to your central heating system by removing these products. The process involves connecting a power flushing pump to the existing central heating pump valves, or across the tails of a radiator. Specialist chemicals are then pumped around the heating system to loosen and mobilise the unwanted debris.

Each radiator is then individually flushed until clean and on completion, an inhibitor is added to prevent further corrosion. The whole process is carried out with minimal disturbance and disruption. For more information or for a free no obligation quote, ring Paul on (01508) 532671 or 07879 414197. Or alternatively go to www.suffolkpowerflushing.co.uk.

We have negotiated special rates with our panel of Insurers for those careful drivers and special introductory discounts for those without any no claim bonus. We are always able to offer instalment facilities. We deal with many leading UK and Lloyds Underwriters to provide the best possible quotation and cover for our clients, regardless of the risk. Being totally independent means that we are not tied to a single provider and this allows us access to a range of insurance policies from our panel

of carefully selected Insurers. Why not let us compare the market for you and deal on a personal level with your requirements. Priory Insurance Brokers are a locally owned, independent, professional organisation who have been based in South Norfolk for over 40 years. We would be pleased to provide quotations or advice for you and look forward to receiving your enquiry. For more information, please feel free to call in to our Wymondham Office.

Kerry Butcher Accountancy Services Finally January is over and we can start to think about spring and summer holidays. January was a miserable month – full of dark cold weather and thinking about how much tax was owed. Now your tax return is done and dusted – except did you know that it is actually only just over a month until the next tax year finishes. Wouldn’t it be nice to get ahead this year? How good would it be to reach December and know that you don’t have to worry about your accounts or your tax return as they are all taken care of? How smug could you be? Well the earlier you can get your books and records together and pass them on to us here at KBA the easier it is to make sure that you can be one of those smug people! Of course it’s not all about tax returns – 5 April 2014 sees the end of the first year of Real Time for Pay as You Earn. HMRC relaxed their penalties for the first year of RTI which meant that if you were late filing a return, you didn’t have any fines to pay. From 6 April 2014 this all changes – so maybe now is a

good time to start thinking about using a payroll provider. Our payroll service is offered for weekly, fortnightly or monthly paid employees and we offer a range of services starting at as little as £10 (plus VAT) per payroll run. It really is as simple as sending us an email and we can do your payroll for you. “What are the benefits of being a limited company?” This is one question we get asked a lot. There are actually quite a few benefits of being limited but there are also some drawbacks too. Being limited can be a really good idea and setting up a company is really easy but make sure that this is the right decision for your business. Why not come and have a chat with us before you make that final decision? And don’t forget if you do go limited; we can be your registered office address at NO COST!

below the VAT threshold? What is the current VAT threshold? It is really important to make sure that you keep an eye on all of these things as the VAT threshold is based on a rolling year– not just the accounting year. So if you have been busy over the past few months and business has picked up – enjoy the celebrations but just check that you don’t need to become VAT registered. Remember the threshold is calculated on turnover and not profit – why not come and talk to us to put your mind at rest. We can prepare figures for you – discuss the best VAT schemes available and

complete the registration process on your behalf and that is before you even complete your first VAT return. Don’t forget that there are special rules for what you can claim in your first return too. So don’t miss out. Here at KBA we constantly strive to make your business better and to keep all of our clients happy. If you are happy then our job is done. If we can help with any of the topics mentioned then why not give us a call 01953 457173 or email kerry@kerrybutcher.co.uk. Why not make 2014 the best year ever!

Chapel Road School

At Dapper Dogs

Visit to the Hippodrome Circus and forthcoming charity disco & raffle.

It’s a very spacious, friendly environment and an air conditioned salon to help keep your dogs comfortable.

We have just returned from our annual visit to the ‘School Show’ at the Hippodrome Circus in Great Yarmouth. As always, the show was both professional and highly entertaining. All our children have very complex needs, so it can be difficult to find activities and experiences that are appropriate and venues that are sufficiently accommodating. The Hippodrome offers both and most certainly ‘presses all the right buttons’ - for both children and staff! The show offers a complete sensory experience of sights, sounds and smells (the scent of fresh popcorn in the foyer is very hard to resist!). It enabled our pupils to experience ‘4 - dimensional’ live performing arts at first hand. We are lucky to have this unique and stimulating venue ‘right on our doorstep’ and I would encourage all schools to consider offering this experience to their pupils. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Christine, Peter and their team at the Hippodrome for their welcome, their help and thoughtfulness every year”.

Chapel Road School are also raising money for ‘Terry Day’ at Chapel Rd school in May in memory of the late Terry Broom (well known character of Attleborough, my Dad) The charity money will be spent on giving the pupils at Chapel Rd School a fun day of music & entertainment in May, we need to raise some nice funds to give the children a lovely day. We are also looking for donations of funds or raffle prizes towards the day, so if anyone would be so kind to donate whether it’s a local business or person, my contact details are: tinanr17@aol.com or contact me on 07905997970 Charity Disco & Raffle Sat 5th April Attleborough Snooker Centre 7pm Start for the younger ones...party fun & games, raffle at 9pm & disco till late All welcome Adults £2 Under 16’s £1 Tina Davis ( Broom)

Dapper Dogs is open between MondayFriday 9am until 5pm and occasional Saturdays to suit everyones needs. We have a lot to offer whether it’s just anal glands/nail clippings/ a brush or just simply a soothing bath; we are here for your dog and your needs. We groom all breeds and cater for all temperaments and style to your dogs requirements. Commencing this year we will be offering one to one appointments, if your dog is in need of a one to one pampering! This

Looking forward to a great New Year The Civil Service Retirement Fellowship ended the year on December the 19th with a happy Christmas Party where food and presents were enjoyed by all. We look forward to a good time in 2014, meeting at 10.00 to 12 noon on the third Thursday of each month in the Methodist Church Hall, London Rd, Attleborough. The January meeting was held on the 16th and we heard from a special guest speaker from Age U.K. The February meeting on the 20th will be the AGM

February 2014

On March the 20th will be a speaker from Contact Care and April 17th the ever popular Cliff Amos will be entertaining us with a tour of Attleborough Pubs (and there were many in Attleborough’s past). If you would like to join us for a taste of the Fellowship please feel free to call in at the meeting or you could contact: Mrs Doreen Parker on 01953 456958 for any further information.

We are located in the centre of Attleborough between The Flower Box and the Griffin.

With the help of Sainsburys Active Kids vouchers In December, girls from 3rd Attleborough Brownies were delighted to present black out tents to a representative from Each Anglia Children’s Hospices for use by the play team at Quidenham.

They didn’t achieve enough in 2012 so continued to collect in 2013. To their great amazement, 2013 was a bumper year enabling them to collect sufficient vouchers for two tents plus some smaller items. The black out tents were something that the play team had wanted for a number of months. The idea to collect for a different cause was inspired by noticing a name badge

when committee members will be elected.

If you have any questions or queries call us on 01953 453459 or just pop in and see us.

on a parent when they picked up their daughter. As a Brownie we promise to help other people and part of our law is ‘to think of others before myself’ so donating fits in well with this. Often we help others by collecting financially, but this was a different way of being able to help. The black out tents will be used by the play team at Quidenham Hospice both in their residential work on site at the hospice as well as when visiting children’s homes. They will be used with a variety of sensory equipment, particularly fibre optic lights (as in the photographs). The play team said: “Thank you for the black out tents which you gave us. They are fantastic and are extremely useful and fun to use”.

DIY Energy Efficiency You’ve got a bio-fuel car, you recycle your cans, bottles and paper and you even grow your own vegetables. But is your home as energy efficient as it could be? Inefficient products such as fridge freezers and dishwashers could be causing you to sport a giant-sized carbon footprint. So how can you improve your home’s energy efficiency and ensure that home items you buy in future are good for you and good for the environment? There are several giveaways that you’re losing heat. Mould and mildew or high humidity can be an indication of water leaks in your toilet or pipework, meaning you use more water, or in your roof, windows or walls, which means that you could be losing heat. Fix leaks and you could save on water usage or heating bills. Old appliances can be extremely inefficient meaning that as well as damaging your green rating your energy bills could be sky high. Items such as fridge freezers made before the mid 90s won’t have been efficiency rated and should be replaced with a new appliance boasting a good energy efficiency rating. Replacing your clothes washer with an energy efficient equivalent will not only save

enough water to fill three home swimming pools and save enough money to buy a dryer too!

consider the green credentials of materials you use and dispose of unwanted building materials appropriately - wherever possible

Many homes are so poorly insulated that they lose heat endlessly throughout winter meaning ever rising fuel bills to keep the family warm. Replacing worn insulation is a must and thanks to improvements in technology is a job easily and fairly cheaply done without professional assistance or safety equipment, Double glazing also cuts down on heat leaks. Remember to get in contact with your local council to check whether you qualify for government grants for insulation.

Do You ‘Pay-As-You-Go’ ?

It’s a well-known fact that TVs and PCs left on standby waste electricity. Additionally, turn all appliances off at the wall to keep waste to an absolute minimum. If every appliance in every home was rated energy efficient it would save endless amounts of greenhouse gas emissions. This is just one reason to ensure that future purchases bear the energy efficiency sticker, which guarantees maximum efficiency rating. When carrying out DIY don’t forget to

reuse or recycle and use sustainable woods and other building goods so that your home, can be as green as the rest of your life.

A cheaper alternative to ‘Pay-As-You-Go’ Mobile ‘Pay-As-You-Go’ can seem like a good idea for many; it allows you to avoid any nasty surprises when you receive your bill at the end of the month. But that comes at a huge cost. Not only do you have to pay much more for ALL your calls that you make, and texts and data you use – you are also unable to get a free handset. We can offer you a better solution, giving the same peace of mind as ‘Pay-As-youGo’ but with lots of extra benefits. It’s called ‘Budget Control’ and here’s how it works: • You can choose any of our value price plans, starting at just £7.50 per month.

• You can choose any handset from our wide range, starting at just £1 per month. • Once you have used your inclusive allowance of calls or data, you won’t be able to go over this limit, but thanks to Unlimited Free Texts you will always be able to keep in touch. • It’s only available from the Utility Warehouse, and is free of charge on all our price plans and handsets (except BlackBerry). So… you can talk more, text more, and pay less than ‘Pay-As-You-Go’, and get a free handset. And best of all, ‘Budget Control’ is free! Contact Jonathan on 07802 690589

New Year, New Bed...? Did you sleep well last night? Do you feel refreshed and ready to start the day? For most of us a third of our life is spent asleep, meaning the wear on our mattress over time is considerable, yet a staggering 25% of people wouldn’t consider changing their mattress – even after more than 10 years.* It is hardly surprising then that 58% of the population complain of waking feeling stiff and achy.*

to allow our bodies to recover, help our brains work correctly and can even help you lose weight.

unparalleled breathability – allowing air to pass through easily preventing the body from overheating.

The right environment is essential for a good nights sleep, your room should be dark, quiet and warm. Remember to turn off those mobile phones, vibrations and flashing lights can disturb your sleep.

December 2013 saw the launch of Geltex, the newest invention in mattress technology. With statistics showing that around 75% of us are not getting a good nights sleep, Silentnight Group know how important sleep is to our health and wellbeing, so they introduced Geltex.

Make The Most Of Your Retirement We are all living longer and planning to do more with our free time... ..But a changing economic climate and pension provisions mean many people don’t often have the money to realise their retirement dreams. Equity release is beginning to play an important role for home owners aged over 55 and in my experience the most important factors for people seeking advice is to demonstrate and be able to guarantee the following: • There must be a ‘no negative equity guarantee’ to safeguard your beneficiaries • You have the right to sell your home at any time to down-size or move into other accommodation, the amount owed is then repaid with any balance transferred to your bank account • No monthly payments are made, as interest is rolled up on a lifetime mortgage. If a Home Reversion plan is more suitable you would sell a proportion of your property and remain in your home for life with no roll up of interest on the percentage of the value retained.

• You are able to remain in your own home for as long as you wish • Money borrowed will be at a fixed rate of interest for life, is tax-free, and can be used for any purpose There are many reasons why people raise money using Equity Release: to repay an existing mortgage, home improvements, buy a motor home, travel abroad, help their children with house purchase or to enhance their own lifestyle. Before making any decisions you are advised to seek independent professional advice from a person qualified and approved by the FCA. This can be checked on the FCA Register: www.fca.org.uk/register or telephone 0800 111 6768.

you to discuss and reflect on the advice given. In my opinion you should not make any decision at the first meeting. This should be to establish whether the person giving you the advice is acceptable to you or not before asking him or her to obtain further information specific to your own needs. It is an FCA requirement that Keyfacts are given to you and thoroughly explained, this may be from two or three providers to assess the most suitable before making your decision to apply for either a lump

sum of money, income or to secure a facility that will allow you to draw down sums as and when required. There are many options available to you hence the reason why it is necessary to be fully informed. For further information please call me on 01508 483983 or visit my website: www.businessmattersifa.co.uk - My FCA number is 301141 Michael Boon Cert PFS CeMAP CeRER member of the Equity Release Council

Before deciding whether Equity Release is suitable for you, your questions should be answered to your total satisfaction, be prepared to take time over this, never be rushed into something if you are in any doubt. If you are single or living on your own, consider inviting a friend or a family member to be with you. This will enable

But after a few short years, the Utility Warehouse allowed me, while still in my 20’s, to clear my student debts and build an extensive property portfolio, while having the freedom to go on holiday six or seven times a year. It took about five years to become semi-retired – that sure beats working until I’m 75. If you're looking to beat the rat-race, you've found the right vehicle.” Wes Linden

Are You Drinking Enough? We all know that not drinking enough water is bad for you, but it seems drinking too much can be equally bad, according to recent reports. With all these mixed messages it’s hardly surprising that many of us are left wondering how much water is enough. As most of us know, it’s very important to make sure we are drinking enough because our bodies need water and other fluids to work properly. Water makes up about two-thirds of our body weight. It’s important for this to be maintained because most of the chemical reactions that happen in our cells need water. Our blood also needs water to carry nutrients around the body as well as to expel toxins. As your body works it produces waste products, some of which are toxic. These are got rid of through the kidneys in urine, and urine is mainly made up of water. Unfortunately, we lose a lot of this water through evaporation, when we breathe and sweat. As the temperature rises or as we do more activity, this increases the amount of water the body loses. As a result you need to replace the fluids you lose to stay healthy. In the British climate, we should drink approximately 1.2 litres (six to eight glasses) of fluid a day to stop us becoming dehydrated. In hotter climates the body needs more than this. It’s also worth remembering that we get some fluid from the food we eat.

February 2014

While it’s not wrong to drink caffeine, its best to avoid too much, particularly when it is very hot or you are in danger of becoming dehydrated. This is because drinks that contain caffeine, such as tea, coffee and cola, can act as mild diuretics, which means they make the body produce more urine. This affects some people more than others, but it also depends on how much caffeine you drink and how often. It’s fine to drink these sorts of drinks, but we should also try to drink some fluids each day that don’t contain any caffeine. This shouldn’t be too difficult, as there are plenty of options. You don’t just have to stick to plain water. A few drops of fruit juice in a glass of water gives it an instant injection of flavour, while a pure fruit juice or home-made lemonade makes a welcome change from tap water on its own. However, if you should fall foul of the recommended drinking guidelines, you could find yourself battling dehydration, so it worth remembering the tell-tale signs. One of the first is feeling thirsty. Then you may feel tired and lethargic, which will decrease your capacity for exercise. This is why extra fluid is needed in hot weather or during strenuous activity. For each hour of exercise you should drink an extra litre of fluid. If you have an illness that is causing sickness, diarrhoea or sweating, you will need to up your fluid intake to make up for the extra loss.

If you think you might not be getting enough fluids, check if you are showing any of these other common signs of dehydration:

• Dark-coloured urine and not passing much when you go to the toilet • Headaches • Confusion and irritability • Lack of concentration

Valentines History

Special Events

Spring is almost upon us and, like the rest of nature, our thoughts are turning to romance.

Themed events for you and your loved one to enjoy

As bulbs begin to peep out of the ground and birdsong our gardens, there is a noticeable change in the air as St Valentine’s Day approaches. Embracing a time of year that is historically associated with love and fertility, St Valentine’s Day encompasses the marriage of Greek gods Zeus and Hera and the Ancient Roman festival of Lupercus, the god of fertility. There is some dispute over the original date of this festival but since 496 St Valentine’s Day has been celebrated on February 14 when Pope Galasius named it in memory of a third century Roman priest. While there were two other St Valentines, one a priest in Italy and another who lived and died in Africa, it is widely accepted that the Bishop of Interamna (now Terni in northern Italy) is the basis for the modern saint. Valentinius was a devout Catholic who dared to flout Roman Emperor Claudius II’s edict which banned soldiers from marrying, as he believed it weakened their military resolve and focus. Instead, all young Roman men were ordered to worship their twelve gods and every February 15 they celebrated a fertility festival where the men were allowed to choose a sexual partner from the young women gathered. But Valentinius encouraged the men to shun the heathen practice and dedicate themselves instead to Christ and the sanctity of marriage. He preached Christ at the threat of death and officiated secret weddings on February 14. He continued to conduct marriages in secret between young people, sometimes as young as twelve, and was eventually arrested. During his imprisonment, Valentinius taught Julia, the prison commander’s beautiful but blind daughter, about Roman history, arithmetic and God. Spurred on by her faith, he prayed for her and she received her sight but only in time to read his last note on the eve of his execution, urging her to devote her life to God and signed “from your Valentine”. He was killed the next day, February 14, 270 AD, and Julia and many whose lives

were touched remembered him every February 14, by sending notes and gifts to others to celebrate his life. That tradition has grown rapidly worldwide and an estimated one billion cards are now sent each year, making it the second largest card-sending holiday of the year after Christmas. However, many centuries later, St Valentine continues to be the source of fervent discussion and disagreement. Far from the passion and heat of the Italian capital, two Celtic nations are at loggerheads over who can lay claim to the saint’s holy relics. Franciscan friars in one of Glasgow’s most deprived areas insist they were asked in 1868 to look after the remains by a French family who owned other religious relics. The relics spent more than a century in a side aisle of St Francis’ Church, Glasgow, and in recent years were kept in a wooden casket in a cardboard box, on a wardrobe in a nearby chapel house. They were recently moved to the church of Blessed St John Duns Scotus in the Gorbals and were put on display for a special Valentine’s service in a bid to bring a little romance to the Scottish city. However, the Scottish ceremony did not find favour across the Irish Sea where the remains of St Valentine are said to repose in a casket at Whitefriar Street Church in Dublin. The Irish say they were passed on as a gift from Pope Gregory XVI to the respected Dublin Carmelite, Father John Spratt. Whatever the truth of the matter, it is unlikely that the confusion will not detract from the true message of the saint’s day.

Romantic Aromatherapy For Valentine’s Day! Since the days of the ancient Egyptians, sweet-smelling fragrant oils have been used by many civilizations to enhance health, fertility, virility and of course, love The legend of Cleopatra records how she used the exotic aroma of rose petals to entice Mark Anthony into her bedroom, and we all know how that worked out! The easiest way to enjoy the mood-enhancing effects of essential oils is to use a burner or diffuser to disperse their therapeutic effects, or you can just wear your blend as a perfume.

Ylang Ylang - essential oil is a powerful relaxant that can help to allay nervousness and anxiety for those who are shy. Ylang Ylang seems to have the ability to harmonise the emotional and sensual part of our being, releasing the fear of sensuality. These qualities, together with its passionate and arousing action make ylang ylang a perfect essential oil for Valentine’s Day.

Rose - still reigns supreme as the most seductive of all essential oils, with a powerful sensual effect that can be used alone or blended with other oils such as lavender, geranium or frankincense. A combination of just 2 drops of rose essential oil and 1 drop of sandalwood smells sexy and sophisticated. Jasmine - another oil ideal for romantic encounters. Reputed to be a sacred flower in ancient Persia, jasmine is said to attract a lover due to its irresistible aroma. You can easily reduce the sweetness of jasmine absolute by mixing it with a little grapefruit, bergamot or lavender oils.

Languorous breakfasts together in the conservatory? Couples-only cruises? Holding hands on long walks along the promenade? In reality, retirement can put a lot of stress on even the most secure of relationships, after years spending just a few hours together a week you’re suddenly plunged in to 24 hours a day, seven days a week with the same person. So how do you ensure your relationship survives retirement? Prepare for success Take time before you retire to evaluate your relationship and how you intend to make the most of it when you have more time together. Talk about what you imagine your life will be like and to discuss the places where your fantasies don’t match. Make a plan which both of you are happy with - where will you holiday? Will you move house? What hobbies will you enjoy together and apart? Manage your expectations Be aware that retirement won’t be perfect every step of the way. Spending all this time together will result in some disagreements so don’t expect a bed of roses, excitement every day or constant romance. Appreciate what you have in your stable relationship and the time you have together in retirement. Share your hobbies Supposing your husband loves golf, or your wife is a gardener extraordinaire. Spend time appreciating your other half’s

passions, whether you enjoy them or not. A relationship is all about give and take and you never know, you may discover a skill for putting or a love of roses yourself. But not all of them In every relationship, from the fledgling romance to the long-standing love, couples need space from each other. Make time just for you and allow your partner to spend time apart as well. This may involve taking solo holidays, spending time with friends or taking a class. But if it just means taking a relaxing bubble bath a couple of times a week or reading a book in the study, that’s good too. Stay positive When you and your partner find yourself in each other’s company day in, day out you’ll undoubtedly come across problems. But even if hidden resentments bubble to the surface, you disagree on how to spend (or save) your nest egg or you just begin to get under each other’s feet, keep a positive outlook, remember why you looked forward to this time and enjoy it as best you can. If in doubt ask for help It might be as simple as chatting with a friend or you might choose to contact a relationship counsellor but the important thing is that you know there’s no shame in admitting there’s something not right in your marriage. Retirement can be more stressful than any of us expect but ask for help and take advice and it can be just as wonderful as you hoped.

Under A Quarter Of The UK Saving For Retirement A new Age UK poll has revealed that just under a quarter of people aged 50 – 64 think there’s no point in saving for their retirement. The poll, carried out to mark the launch of the charity’s Financial Services Commission, found that 23 % of this age group across Great Britain don’t think it’s worth saving for later life. The survey found that, far from being complacent about their financial predicament, many people did not believe that they had enough to retire comfortably. In fact 26 % of 50-64 year olds worried about having enough to live on. In addition 15% said they couldn’t afford to save and 12% said they thought they’d left it too late. Yet, virtually half, 47 %, of 50-64 year olds think the State Pension will not be enough to live on, raising the spectre of older people struggling to make ends meet later on in retirement. Only 15 % of 50-64 year olds thought they had saved enough already.

Tom Wright, Group Chief Executive of Age UK and Co-Chair of the Financial Services Commission said, ‘It’s not surprising Tomorrow’s Pensioners have become disillusioned about saving for retirement. As a group, they have weathered multiple recessions, a global financial crisis and seen, interest and annuity rates plummet leaving pension pot returns at an all-time low. Age UK’s Financial Services Commission is holding a series of summit meetings between December 2013 and June 2014 where the charity will be carrying out research, bringing together leading industry figures and consulting older people on ways to build up financial resilience. The purpose will be to enable them to prepare for later life and to ensure they can stay financially included until the end of their lives.

Fiat 500L Trekking 1.6 MultiJet 105hp The Fiat 500L Trekking combines a fashionable look with special grip gadgetry called Traction+, which helps the car handle difficult and dicey surfaces. Under conditions of low or zero traction, the system detects slip, making it easy to maintain directional stability and control. The car is slow and cumbersome to begin with, but the technology certainly inspires confidence during bad driving conditions. The fresh model offers the same functional and practical qualities of the standard Fiat 500L, but has a more upright look. This is because the Italian automaker has raised the car’s suspension to enable it to drive over rough ground more effectively. Features on the 500L includes a touchscreen radio with Bluetooth, six airbags, ESC (Electronic Stability Control), cruise control, leather gearknob and steering wheel, dual zone climate control, side mouldings, parking sensors, electric windows, automatic lights with rain sensors, front fog lights and rear armrest. The Fiat also has high-tech fabric seat upholstery with eco-leather inserts.

were fitted with mud and snow tyres. To emphasise its outdoor disposition, the Fiat also has specific front and rear bumpers, a skid-plate and fog lights which help give it a rugged look. If you’re concerned about the wellbeing of you and your passengers then the Fiat will certainly tick your box. It’s one of the safest motors on the road today, as demonstrated by its prestigious Euro NCAP 5-star rating. In fact the 500L Trekking is the first car in the Fiat range to provide City Brake Control as standard. This system is designed to reduce the effects of low-speed collision in traffic. It’s clever stuff. Overall, the big Fiat is a robust motor and will appeal to style conscious families who need the space for five people combined with functionality and practicality. Just don’t expect awesome acceleration and certainly allow yourself lots of time to overtake.

Attleborough Service Centre

Mobiles Driving Motorists To Distraction

The workshop staff are fully trained and have a comprehensive knowledge base available. Courtesy cars are available to keep you mobile while we service your vehicle, however these need to be booked in advance.

With our rolling road we can offer brake testing facilities on all types of cars/vans and HGV’s as well as testing your exhaust emissions to the latest standards. HGV vehicles can be inspected to VOSA standards by our skilled technicians to meet all your operational requirements. We offer a power wash facility to get rid of that weekly road grime plus a steam cleaning service prior to your annual MOT inspection or paintwork preparation.

Our addictive relationship with the gadget has grown in proportion to the apps we rely on to direct our daily lives - not all of which are to our benefit. The dangers of using a mobile while driving are well documented and do attract a £60 fine, three penalty points and higher insurance premiums. Yet new research reveals that despite the practice being illegal since 2003, three quarters of British drivers see others using mobile phones on some or most journeys, while a quarter spot drivers using their mobile on every trip. And it’s not just talking that’s the problem - some drivers are texting, emailing, Tweeting, updating their social networks or taking photographs on the move. The AA/Populus poll of nearly 21,000 drivers found 42 per cent say they used a hand-held phone in the car even though nearly two thirds admitted it distracted them from driving. Some 20 per cent confessed to texting behind the steering wheel, four per cent admit to checking emails and two per cent have sent emails or read Twitter or Facebook updates on the move. Another worrying and morbid development is the advent of “digital rubber neckers” - drivers who feel the need to use their phones to film or photograph serious crashes on the motorway, says the motoring organisation. In one incident on the M1 in Northamptonshire, police recorded 80 drivers using their phones or cameras to photograph emergency services carry out a four and a half hour rescue of a woman trapped in her crashed truck. The seriously injured driver was eventually flown by air ambulance to hospital and survived the crash. The police have contacted most of the drivers to warn them about their illegal and irresponsible behaviour but have not brought any prosecutions. Edmund King, AA president, says: “Drivers need to concentrate on driving rather than

be distracted by their digital technology. Research shows that some drivers are now using their smart phones for more than talking on the move. It is really not smart to talk, text or tweet on the move. “Digital rubber neckers who photograph crashes really are morbid voyeurs who should be concentrating on the road not the victims of crashes. It beggars belief that these macabre motorists should put their lives and others at risk through their lust for twisted metal. “We would like to see the police target more mobile phone abusers so that the message gets out that it is not worth hanging on the telephone while driving. However, we have seen a 29% reduction in traffic police in the last decade so their resources are stretched.” Road safety charity Brake’s campaign urging drivers to put their phones out of sight and out of mind while driving warns that using a phone behind the wheel can lengthen reaction times to a similar extent to drink driving, significantly increasing the risk of crashing. The charity says unlike other types of deadly risk-taking, men and women young and old - are almost equally guilty of using their phone behind the wheel, showing widespread misunderstanding of the dangers. Julie Townsend, Brake deputy chief executive, says: “Use a phone while driving and you are taking a horrendous risk with your own life and the lives of others. Many drivers who wouldn’t dream of drink-driving are using phones while driving, oblivious that the effect on your reaction times can be similar. “We’re urging people to drive smart, recognising that phone use at the wheel can and does destroy lives, and no call or text is ever that important. If you need to use your phone urgently, pull over somewhere safe first: it’s as simple as that. We are also calling on the government to do more to tackle phone use at the wheel, including banning hands-free phones and bringing in far stiffer penalties.”
