New Mayor

Diss Museum

For Diss.

Jamie Oliver’s TV series about American food showed that there is a great deal more to it than just hamburgers.

On the 16th May, at the Full Town Council meeting, Graham Minshull became the new Town Mayor, taking over from Mike Bardwell who held the position for the previous 12 months. Graham Minshull has served as a Diss town councillor for six years, and during his speech at the town council meeting, he spoke about how Diss

had changed during his time on the council, with people thinking much more positively of the town and what it had to offer. Graham is looking forward to his 12 months as Mayor, and Dispatch Magazine is meeting with him to get a full report of his plans, which we will bring to you in a full report next month.

I got his book for Christmas one year and often make the Mexican breakfast – eggs poached in spicy tinned tomatoes, served with cheese on top and flatbreads. Now you can share in an American lunch, courtesy of Diss Museum and the Norfolk’s American Connections project. The lunch is at St. Mary’s Hall, Diss from 12.30pm on Saturday 14th July. There is no admission charge. You just make the food and bring it. Cutlery and crockery are provided; and you can heat things up if necessary. We have run themed lunches before - wartime, 18th century, Tibetan - and they have invariably gone well. We have always had an amazing spread of food, with everybody bringing different things. We obtained some funding from the county project, so that will pay for the hall hire, plus salads,

relishes, root beers etc. Otherwise the success of the day is entirely up to the guests. Why not come along? You can bring a first course, a pudding or both. Looking through Jamie’s book, I wondered about the real baked beans, which are nothing like the tinned variety. For a pudding I might try making the sweet potato pie. Someone might like to bring some cornbread. Painted Hills Potatoes, TrayBaked Chicken, Prawn-Stuffed Flatfish, Peach Shortcake, Bourbon Pecan Tart - I’m getting hungry at the thought of it. Just give me a call to say you are coming, or if you want any ideas, at the museum office on 01379 650618. Basil Abbott

Charity Bike Ride Brothers Jonny and Martin Dickson completed a charity 100 mile bike ride on 5th May in and around Wortham where they grew up. It was to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of their dad Laurie Dickson who died last year of cancer. The bike ride consisted of five laps - each of twenty miles, and around thirty people joined them for one or more of the laps. Two other people also managed to cycle the 100 miles and two family friends ran one of the laps.

Diss Decorative & Fine Arts Society Petra - The Rose Red City. Continuing the broad spread of Arts lectures at Diss Decorative and Fine Arts Society [DDFAS], the May lecture dealt with archaeology and a fine presentation by Geoffrey Toms, a leading authority with long personal knowledge of the ancient site in present day Jordan. His comprehensive photographic record enhanced the story from the original occupation of the area by the Nabataean peoples 2,500 years ago through to its dramatic re-discovery by the Swiss explorer, John Burckhart, in 1812. Although suspected of being a spy, Burckhart persuaded his guide to take him to the ruined site and became probably the first European to visit the City since it was abandoned after an earthquake in 760. Petra had been a crucial trading city in the ancient world being a crossroads for the overland routes from Persia and the Far East and the Mediterranean in the west. The important and profitable trade in Silks, Spices and other luxuries led

July 2012

to rapid growth into a key city between 100 BC and 200 AD. The nomadic Nabataenans profited directly and settled into city life around the plentiful water sources that supported the valley. Its fame attracted Greek and later Roman traders which was reflected in its building styles. This unique mix of architecture, most cut directly into the famous red stone, included tombs, classical facades, public buildings and statues. Geoffrey Toms took his audience along the road and into the city through his well presented and personal photographs some taken before concerns over health and safety would make them difficult to replicate today. Petra became a very important tourist site in the 19th century but little archaeology was completed until the 1980’s and a large scale American “dig” which revealed much more about its history. An enthusiastic lecturer with real expertise and knowledge, Mr Toms

naturally concluded with Dean John Burgon’s famous poem (from 1845) and its concluded line - “The Rose Red City – half as old as time” The new season of 10 monthly lectures will start on 18th September 2012. For the first presentation and as a link with the Tate Britain exhibition “The Pre-

Raphaelite Brotherhood” we are delighted to have secured Valerie Woodgate. Valerie is an accomplished Lecturer and Guide at Tate Britain and Tate Modern together with many other London Galleries. As always, potential members are very welcome to come and experience the quality of the events for themselves.

Diss Museum What has Diss Museum achieved in the last year? How should it develop in the future? Both aspects will be considered at the Annual Meeting of the Museum Trustees - to which all interested members of the public are warmly invited. It takes place on Monday 16th July at 2.30pm in the Waveney Room of the Corn Hall. Financial and general reports will be given on the year to 30th April. The up to date position on the repairs needed on the museum building will be outlined.

After light refreshments there will be an opportunity for everyone present to put forward ideas as to how the museum should develop. These will be considered by the Trustees for their Five Year Plan which they will draw up later in the year. Come and have your say! Frank Howard (Chairman of Diss Museum Trustees)

The personal injury lawyers.

At June’s meeting we welcomed author Peter Maggs who explained that whilst in the course of researching his family history he discovered the fascinating story of a court case involving a distant relative, the Rev. Henry Hatch.

Your questions answered…… Question: I was recently bitten by an aggressive dog whilst in my local park. Can I claim compensation for my injuries? Answer: You may be able to pursue a claim for compensation against the owner or keeper of the dog that attacked you. For that reason, it will be important for you to have obtained the name and address of the dog’s owner or keeper (or at least to have some way of finding this out). For a compensation claim to succeed in such circumstances it is usually necessary to show a pattern of previous aggressive behaviour of the dog. A successful claim for compensation can be made under the Animals Act 1971 if it can be shown that the dog had abnormal characteristics and that those characteristics were known to the dog’s keeper. It must also be shown that such characteristics led to the injury occurring. It is not necessary to show that the dog had in fact previously bitten someone, nor that the owner could have foreseen that the dog would attack you. In certain circumstances a claim can also be

brought under the law of negligence. Most claims arising from dog bites are however brought under the Animals Act. If the dog is of a certain type, it may not be necessary to prove that he or she has been aggressive in the past in order to succeed with a claim for compensation. Under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, certain types of dog are regarded as dangerous. For example, pit bull terriers are subject to special rules including that they must be muzzled and kept on a lead when in a public place. Generally speaking if the dog is not of a dangerous type and has been previously well behaved, then it will be difficult to succeed with a claim for compensation.

His interest in the case formed the basis of his book ‘’Henry’s Trials: The extraordinary history of the Reverend Henry John Hatch’’.

The trial in 1859 was heard at The Old Bailey where Hatch was accused of indecently assaulting two young sisters whilst in his care. The prosecution’s case relied solely on the verbal testimony of the girls, seven year old Stephana and eleven year old Eugenia Plummer. Hatch protested his innocence but hampered by Finally, most people have household insurance an inept defence team and the law that prohibited both him and his wife from which covers them for public liability claims. old Eugenia found herself in the dock accused of conspiring with her mother and sister to commit perjury. Further trials followed with Hatch attempting to obtain justice and compensation for his ordeal. Unfortunately these hearings met with little sympathy from the judiciary at the time. Eventually Hatch and his wife moved away but the toll on his reputation and finances were never to recover. The picture that Peter Maggs paints of those involved in the legal system of 19th Century England highlights a frightening process and those expecting a fair trial could just as easily receive criminal injustice. Will The Taxman Be Coming After You? Do you provide your own services without being paid as an employee? If so, do you use a limited company or a partnership as an intermediary to provide those services to client? If you do, then the intermediaries legislation - commonly known as ‘IR35’ - may apply to you. This is legislation which prevents people who use intermediaries from being better off than they would have been had their end clients employed them directly.

However, the publication of the guidance is very helpful in that taxpayers will have a better understanding of HMRC’s approach and their view of the relative importance of each test. In turn, this will assist people who do use intermediaries to provide services to structure their arrangements in such a way as to try to ensure that they are in the low risk category.

4Networking

Stacey & Partners

There has never been a better time to try networking and 4Networking in Diss.

Are you buying and selling on the Internet? Be warned, you may need to tell the Inland Revenue! So says Mark Wallace of the Accountancy Firm, Stacey & Partners.

4N Diss is a vibrant group of business people from Diss and the surrounding area that encourages Diss businesses to get to know each other during friendly meetings, develop that relationship and do business with each other within your local area. If your business model extends regionally and nationally, 4Networking will work for you too. You can now join at your first or second meet for £200+VAT - if you join on your first meet, you’ll also get a FREE month - make sure you

tell your friends and colleagues this great news! Also, from 1st June, for our existing members who choose to renew, we offer a spectacular £44+VAT per month option.

Some people have fallen, had to pay interest, fines and penalties on income not declared to the Inland Revenue, and HMRC are launching a campaign to allow people to come forward, and come clean for a limited period.

Finally, any lapsed member or visitor can choose to join for £200+VAT for 200 days and then at the end of their 200 days take advantage of the BRAND NEW £44 deal.

If you are buying and selling on the Internet and it is not done with the aim of making a profit, then there is no need to inform HM Revenue & Customs.

So if you’ve let your membership lapse or have visited 3 times - join us with the 200 day deal.

Whereas, if trading is done on a regular basis, with a view to making a profit, there is the potential to pay tax. HM Revenue & Customs have had a number of campaigns, under which they are targeting particular areas of tax evasion, and the latest area to be targeted is that of e-markets. The scheme is aimed at online traders who have not previously disclosed their profits. Under the opportunity, traders

can come forward at any point between 4th March and 14th June and inform HM Revenue & Customs that they want to take part. They will then have until 14th September to give details of tax owed and arrange payment, including any interest and penalties. In doing so, it is likely that some tax payers will be able to avoid any penalties at all and are most likely to be liable to a penalty of no more than 10% of the tax owed. After that date, if HM Revenue & Customs discover e-market traders who have not disclosed, the penalties could amount to up to 100% of the tax owed. Mark Wallace of Stacey & Partners are able to advise on this area further and can be contacted on 01824 826100 or via email at thet@staceys.co.uk.

Netball Club Celebrates 25 Years

Attleborough Bible Society

Norfolk United Netball Club (formerly Crosleys Netball Club) will be celebrating their 25th Anniversary in 2013.

Verse and Thought for the Month, July 2012.

Over the years many girls and boys have attended regular training sessions on a Friday night at Attleborough Sports Hall. In fact we are now coaching the “off spring” of some original members. We have competed at leagues across Norfolk and Suffolk and also had many successful players representing our County. In 1999 we amalgamated with clubs in Norwich, Aylsham and Gt Yarmouth in order to compete at Regional level. A number of young players have aspired to become coaches and umpires by a structured mentoring system. Players have taken part in events to raise money for the club as well as Charities such as Comic Relief. With ever increasing kit costs we have been lucky to find a sponsor in Roger Thompson Mortgage Solutions of Attleborough. He has financially supported the club for the last 2 years enabling more young players to take part in the Norwich Junior League.

Results from this year’s junior league are as follows: Junior Division Pearls 7th Emeralds 3rd Seniors Diamonds 3rd Youth Gems 3rd Premier Sapphires 2nd Amber 4th

to reach the heavenly finishing line. But this is no short sprint, rather a life-long marathon beset with obstacles. The spirit of this world tempts the Christian to give up and seek a life of self-indulgence while sowing doubts as to the point of taking part. Thankfully, the Christian is not alone: he or she travels the same route with other Christians, all supported by the grace of God to the end. Being a Christian is a tough call, but eternally worthwhile!

Thank You I would personally like to thank the residents of Attleborough who have sent in cards and good wishes to me for my year in office as Mayor.

Attleborough Probus Club Bramley Court In the absence of our Chairman ,Keith Dutton vice Chairman opened the club and greeted 26 members who came to hear a talk by one of our own members. Roy Howland who enlightened us on Nineteen Century Schools in Norfolk giving us a mine of interesting information on the subject which went back to 1836 when education was only funded by private subscriptions until 1870 when the Elementary Education Act was passed. Corporal punishment in those days was administered by the Strap and the Cane when children were much more disciplined. Mention was made about the Town Crier at the Jubilee celebrations who was sponsored by the Probus club, he did an excellent Job and appeared in town on numerous occasions, a number of pictures of him were recorded but we were rather disapointed that none were depicted in the local papers It was announced that three of our members Ivor Prothero, George Barber,

and Brian Spencer were all unable to attend for health reasons ,they were all made Honoury members. The ladies lunch held at the Crown Hotel at Mundford was well attended by members and their spouses on 30th May, a really excellent meal was enjoyed by all, at excellent venue. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to Roy by Allan Williams, the next meeting will be held on 27th June when our speaker Basil Abbott will talk about Diss Museum.

Is sheltered housing situated just behind Sainsburys on Yew Tree Road. Our garden was open for the Jubilee weekend. The visitors enjoyed tea and cake in the lounge, most of them being surprised how far the gardens stretched and how much colour there was in them. Many people were disappointed by the fact that that there was only one other garden to view in Attleborough. This was because nine other participants unfortunately had to pull out at the last minute, due to poor weather conditions and prior commitments.

On the Sunday, Ros Meppem decorated her three wheel trike and I, decorated a wheelbarrow to take part in the carnival precession. Many people commented on how bright they were with their flowers, streamers, a big doll and a Bulldog stuffed toy, all in red, white and blue. There was also pictures of the Queens Coronation adorning the Jubilee Barrow. Rosemary Davis.

The Probus club meets twice a month on alternate Wednesdays at, the Connaught Bowls Club in Station Road, retired professional and business men are always welcome as guests with a view to possible membership, interested? Contact Stan Groom Tel: 01953 454427.

Attleborough & District Horticultural Society The July meeting of the society will take place on Wednesday 18th July at the usual venue of Attleborough Junior School, starting at 7.30pm. The guest speaker, Terry Illsley, will be giving a talk on “The Victorian Garden” and we are always very pleased to welcome non-members at these talks. There will not be a meeting in August, but we have a busy month in September, commencing on Saturday 8th with our annual Autumn Show. Nonmembers are welcome to exhibit at this show and if you wish to do so please contact the Show Secretary Betty Stacey on 01953 454790 for a schedule. The May meeting was very well attended and members and guests were not to be disappointed. Howard Norton gave an excellent illustrated talk on “Delphiniums”, taking us through the growing year for this particularly beautiful flowering plant. The year usually starts in late

July 2012

February when first signs of spring growth appear and the main flowering season generally peaks in mid July, to be followed by a second flowering period in early autumn. He stressed that delphiniums, by virtue of their sheer size, are hungry and thirsty plants so you need to feed regularly in the growing season for best results. He also went into some detail explaining the different methods of propagating the plant, and because they cross pollinate so readily there is always the chance that you may find a unique specimen growing in your garden. The table show provided a clean sweep for John Frost. He took first place for his three stems of flowers, three different herbs, three stems of foliage shrubs and three sticks of rhubarb.

First Responders

Attleborough ABC

As one of her last duties as Mayor of Attleborough Karen Pettitt’s chosen charity this year has been the Attleborough First Responders.

Came home with 3 Gold Medals from Pirkka, Finland Boxing Tournament.

At the beginning of her year in office Karen Asked Andy Housego from the first responders how much money they were looking for if they had a wish list. Karen was given a list that amounted to just over £1,900.00 I have had several fund raising events during the year and was extremely pleased to present the Attleborough First Responders with a cheque for £2,500.00. This was due to the people of Attleborough supporting the fund raising events. With the money the first responders have enough money to operate for the coming year, and have been able to buy a few extra items that are items they wanted rather than items that they just needed to replace. Andy Housego said “It was a great

surprise to be given more than the amount we had asked for we never thought it would have been possible and would like to thank the former Mayor of Attleborough for all her hard work.” The first responders are run purely by volunteers and any help is most appreciated. Karen Pettitt added “I wanted to help the First Responders because they are run by volunteers and always try to help the community by attending events such as the Christmas Carnival as well as doing their emergency work. Several lives have been saved in the Town because of the efforts of the First Responders and we owe them a great deal of thanks for all their hard work. I hope this helps them to go on and continue to grow. Well done and thank you for all your hard work.”

An excited squad from Attleborough Amateur Boxing Club consisting of 9 boxers and 4 coaches flew to Tampere in Finland to compete in the 26th International Pirkka Tournament. This tournament was held over the 12th & 13th May and is an International Boxing Tournament attracting boxers from all over Europe. Team Attleborough came away from the event with the following Medals: Gold medal winners: Emma Dolan, Joe Kerrison & Jack Crostwaite

The Coaching Team was headed up by Head Coach Jon Dennis and consisted of Bud Royden, Matt Dean & Paul Goulding. Jon was very pleased with how all the boxers performed and they were a credit to the Club throughout the 4 days. This was a gruelling tournament for the boxers and greatly moved on their experience for future events. It was particularly pleasing to see Joe and Jack to win the top medals and for Emma to retain her Gold medal which she also won in 2011.

Silver Medal Winners: Taylor Dean, Matt Croxall & Kieron Campbell The Club held a number of fundraising events to fund this trip and would also like Bronze Medal Winners: to thank all local sponsors who helped Marc Riley & Levi Dennis. make this trip possible.

New Town Mayor On 8th May the Town Council elected Cllr Samantha Taylor to be the new Town Mayor and Cllr Shane Schucroft to be the new Deputy Mayor. Mrs Taylor replaces Cllr Karen Pettitt who served as Mayor in 2011/12. Also agreed at the meeting were committee memberships and the appointment of representatives to outside bodies. Sam has served as a town councillor for the last four years and lived in Attleborough for the past 23 years. She attended high school in the town, is married to Stephen and has four children. The landlady of The London Tavern public house, Sam runs her business with the help and support of her husband and family. Sam and her family support many local and national charities and she is still giving consideration to which worthy cause she will support through her year as Mayor. She is looking forward to a busy but rewarding year in office.

She said: “The group enjoy knitting and our Monday afternoon get-togethers, and we are happy to be raising money for such a worthwhile charity - since 2006 we have presented the Hospice with £5,500.” For more information on Holly Court, contact 0845 140 2020.

A Fellow member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, founder of Howard & Company and author of “Why Businesses Stop Growing and What You Can Do about It” A most unwelcome visit....... The Taxman has wide powers to inspect business records, but he is supposed to give you at least seven days notice to check on your business property, computer or business records. He is permitted to turn-up without warning, but only if tax is immediately at risk, such as where fraud is suspected. In spite of these strict rules, tax inspectors do try to examine business records without a prior appointment, or where an appointment has been arranged, the officers may turn up hours early before the tax adviser has arrived. If the Taxman pitches-up at your workplace and demands access to your business records, know your rights: • Ask to see the inspectors’ ID, which they must carry and check this ID is genuine by telephoning the HMRC office they claim to be from.

• You don’t have to let the tax officers into your building, and their rules say they must not gain entry by force. • You and your staff are not obliged to answer the tax officers’ questions • You are required to provide access at any reasonable time to any computer you use for your business, and help the tax officer extract the computer records, but that’s where your responsibility ends. • The tax officers are not supposed to rummage around in your stuff. They can examine materials and records brought to them but they do not have search powers. Remember if tax officers turn up unannounced, call your accountant without delay! Contemplating Moving From Your Old House? Your present home might not have the room you require or be aesthetically pleasing to the eye. You may be thinking - would it be better to move? Especially if your house has started to cost you money for the upkeep of it. So should you move or remodel your home? Cost is probably the number one factor in determining your decision. When asking yourself this question remember the “hidden” costs of moving i.e. Estate Agent commissions, Mortgage fees, Legal fees, movers and vans, and having to finish all those projects that must be done in order to sell your home. It is hard to find a house with everything that you require. When you buy there will be some compromises and when actually living there, you will find problems that you didn’t notice when viewing the house. and may well end up changing the new home down the road. The reality is you can make your house the perfect place to live by considering home renovating repairs. Deal with the existing problems you have first, by having a good maintenance repair plan.

July 2012

Do not add anything new to your home until you’ve had any issues resolved/repaired first. Think about having energy efficient windows fitted, this will help your home to use less energy and make the running costs lower. Replacing your home with new UPVC Fascias, Soffits and Gutters will give your roof an attractive and unified appearance and keep it looking aesthetically pleasing. It will also protect your Rafters from the elements. Bird comb will keep birds from nesting in your rafters. Replacement will also free you from the burden of having to repaint your fascias and soffits. You could then think about a kitchen renovation and/or a bathroom renovation or even room additions. But given that you’ve chosen to stay in the house, you will need to look at

your routines to find out what’s missing. As Summer is fast approaching, it’s a good time to create your perfect outdoor living space. Garden patios and decking have never been more popular. There are now an increasing number of styles of garden paving and garden products dedicated to help you gain the maximum amount of use and enjoyment from your patio garden. Custom made garden sheds are a perfect way to utilise an area within your garden that otherwise would be wasted. By having a garden shed made to suit the area, you are turning a once useless space into a useful storage or work area. Wood fencing helps to enhance the aesthetic appeal of your home and garden as well as adding essential privacy. The garden fence may be

the first thing people see when they come to your house. Garden fencing needn’t be boring and can really add character, whether it be traditional or contemporary it can be in a range of styles and materials. Screening can be used to hide an unsightly area - bins compost etc. No matter what you decide to do during your home remodelling, the cost can have an effect on how much you appreciate the result. The value of your home will increase after a great renovation project. For more information or a free no obligation quote please contact Jason of J C Homeworks to transform your home. Synergy Solar Systems ACT NOW DEADLINE APPROACHING. The director of Synergy Solar Systems had been concerned for some time by the selling techniques and the quality of work seen from some of the companies in the industry. These products not only look great and gives your new bathroom the wow factor but offer more efficient workings saving water and money in utility bills. These are just a few ways we can help you become more water conscious with your new bathroom. Water-efficient showers Our new water-efficient eco showers use technology that can produce water flows that feel far higher than they actually are an easy way to save both water and energy. They are most effective on power and mixer showers with a high flow rate.Showering more often will greatly reduce water bills. Reduced-capacity baths A standard bath has a capacity of around 150 litres, so even when it’s less than half full it uses a lot of water. If you’re buying a new bath, lookout for our eco baths with a lower capacity. Of course, you can always save water and money by taking a quick shower instead of a bath.

Low-flush and dual-flush toilets About 30% of all water used in dwellings is flushed down the toilet every day. Our Low-flush and dual-flush toilets are designed to reduce the volume of water used for flushing. These systems use up to six litres less water per flush than an oldfashioned toilet - saving over 16,000 litres of water per year (enough to fill seven red telephone boxes). Lower flow taps Our eco low flow rate designer bathroom taps can be fitted to all bathrooms and washrooms. They have a click flow regulator on the control handle which reduces water flow by some 35% but still have a stylish look. Tiffey Valley Garden Services July can be one of the warmest months so the main theme this month is regular watering. Remember to scratch the surface of the soil to get as much water to the root as possible; and why not consider a water soluble feed/fertiliser to really help your grass green up. Continue to mow once a week at a low setting but raise the mower blades in prolonged dry spells. If your lawn is already in good condition, another idea is to leave the grass collection box off two or three times this month to allow a shallow mulch. Clover runners and other invasive weeds can really take a hold this month so before mowing, run a spring tine rake over your lawn to catch the runners, find and remove their root. Keep your lawn edges and borders looking great by taking ten minutes to run around with a half moon spade ( if you don’t have one, then an ordinary garden spade and a length of wood does just as good ).

How to Paint Furniture Painted furniture is undergoing something of a revival at the moment and can be seen in the trendiest of design shops. Luckily it’s also an easy look to recreate at home. Give tired old pieces a new lease of life - or even transform a junk-shop find - with this step-by-step guide to painting furniture. You will need: Knotting solution Fine sandpaper

has any knots in it. If so, carefully apply a knotting solution to the area and allow to dry thoroughly. Prepare the bare wood for painting by brushing on a coat of water-based primer. Allow to dry. If you are painting a piece of furniture that is already painted, remove any old or flaking paint by scraping or sanding carefully with fine sandpaper.

Water based primer Water based acrylic paint for wood Paintbrushes Finishing wax or glaze

Next, wipe or wash the surface thoroughly to make sure it is totally clean, before applying one or preferably two coats of acrylic water-based primer for wood. Step Two: Paint Carefully And Leave To Dry

paint layer out as thinly and evenly as possible. Leave to dry thoroughly before smoothing off any surface marks with very fine sandpaper and then applying a second coat. Step Three: Finishing You can achieve lots of great effects on painted furniture using waxes or glazes designed specifically for the job.

• The colour finish of quality paints lasts longer. Make sure you buy the best paint you can afford. • Take extra care when painting over a piece of furniture that has a stain applied to it - often these finishes can bleed through the primer and paint layers. Choose a specialist product that’s a sealant as well as a primer and apply two coats to seal in the stain.

Another effective trick is to lightly sand off patches of your painted finish on raised areas or edges of your piece to create a distressed look before applying your final wax or glaze finish. Finally, add your new handles or hardware. Tips:

New handles, if required Step One: Prepare The Surface Remove any knobs or handles and drawers. If you are working with a piece of furniture that has not previously been painted, first check whether the wood

Use a brush to apply a coat of waterbased acrylic paint, working in the same direction as the grain of the wood. Thickly applied paint will not dry properly so make sure you remove the excess paint from the brush and smooth the

• After painting with water-based paints, simply rinse brushes thoroughly with warm water and soap. No white spirit is necessary, so it’s definitely gentler on the skin. Water-based acrylic paints also dry quicker and have less odour than solvent-based paints.

The sun really goes to work on your hair, using a process called ‘oxidisation’ it damages the hair shaft and causes it to lose its pigment, a similar process to the one that put those blonde highlights in your hair as a teenager. This, combined with chemical processes like perming and colouring, and styling processes like straightening and blow-drying can really drag down the overall health of your hair. But, you needn’t stay in the house, we have some great tips for looking after your hair this summer. • Wear a hat, protecting your hair from the sun will prevent bleaching

• If you know you’re going to be in the sun for long, leave a little ‘leave-in conditioner’ in before going out (if you forget, sun cream will do the job for a while)

• Use fewer ‘hot’ items like curling tongs and straighteners • Avoid hot showers and washing your hair with hot water • Drink more water, staying hydrated will keep your hair healthier • Wet your hair before going into a pool with chlorine, it will prevent the absorption of the bleach.

Social Media Platforms There has been much talk in the press about how popular various social media platforms really are; how many people use Facebook in the UK? Does Twitter have more active accounts than Flickr? Is anyone over 40 interested in Foursquare? To remove any lingering doubt as to the popularity and importance of social media platforms, we conducted research with Your Say Pays, who asked nearly 2,400 UK adults which social media platforms they used and how often.

Just over three quarters (77 per cent) of the UK’s adult population have an active Facebook profile, equating to around 37.4 million adult users. 32 per cent also had a profile with Twitter, which they regularly used.

We then analysed the results to bring what we believe is the most up-to-date snapshot of social media usage in the UK.

Location-based platforms such as Foursquare were used by around 7.2 million people with a similar number also making use of photosharing platform Flickr (6.7 million) and professional network LinkedIn (7.9 million).

The survey, which was conducted by polling agency Your Say Pays amongst 2,387 UK adults in July, asked how frequently respondents used a selection of social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Flickr, YouTube and location based platforms such as Foursquare.

95 per cent of 18 - 25s having an active Facebook profile, with this figure dropping significantly to 55 per cent of over 65s. LinkedIn came out on top however, being most popular amongst the 18 - 24 year old age bracket.

Northern Ireland, however, saw the highest percentages of those using YouTube, with three quarters of all those surveyed stating that they frequently used the video sharing site, as opposed to just 59 per cent of those in the South West.

Almost a quarter (23 per cent) of all 25 - 34-year-olds have an active LinkedIn profile, but just 14 per

On average, the South East boasted the highest numbers of people using social media platforms.

Women, our results revealed, were more likely to have active Facebook accounts but men, on the other hand, were more likely to use LinkedIn and location-based platforms such as Foursquare. Age is a factor in the use of social media, but research revealed that over half, (55 percent) of pensionable adults in the UK are using Facebook on a regular basis, with a third also using Youtube regularly.

“The social media landscape is changing rapidly and gender divides are starting to become apparent, with men clearly favouring YouTube and LinkedIn, but women opting to use Facebook as their chosen medium of communication.” “Our research clearly shows how geography is playing a key role in social media adoption, with distinct geographical areas beginning to favour different social media platforms to communicate with their networks.” At Dispatch Magazine we have a team of Social Media professionals who are on hand to help you and your business get set up on all the Social Media platforms. Mazda3 1.6D TS2 By Tim Barnes-Clay Twitter: @carwriteups Visit: www.carwriteups.co.uk. THE MAZDA3 1.6 oil-burner is a perfectly adequate hatchback. It pulls more powerfully than you might expect, and the drive is actually quite engaging. On start up, the diesel engine sounds a little harsh but, on the move, the engine noise doesn’t overly intrude on any conversation you might be having with your passengers. The clutch is surprisingly heavy for a mid-sized family hatch and the ride is too firm at times but, on the plus side, the Mazda3 holds the road well and the car cruises very nicely on motorways. The Mazda3 is big enough for a family of four. Your adult passengers won’t be stretching their legs out in the back, but they won’t be doing that in any medium sized car. Access to the rear is particularly good in the five door version of the 3; if you’re a parent of young children, you’ll notice that the doors open wide enough for you to lean in and secure your offspring in their seats easily. Another tick in the box for this Japanesemade car is the load area - the boot is deep and wide allowing, for example, a folded pushchair to be lifted in without any hassle.

July 2012

Aesthetically, the Mazda3 is appealing; in fact, it has had a makeover for 2012, giving it a more muscular, aerodynamic, look. It has a new face, a different rear bumper and it features up-to-the-minute ‘twist-spoke’ alloy wheels. Inside, there are fresh materials and Mazda’s designers have replaced the previous silver colour of the lower dashboard console with black. Behind the wheel, the dials and controls have been ringed in satin-polish silver, making them clearer to see. As well as general improvements to its appearance, and little tweaks here and there to make it even more driver friendly, the Mazda3’s fuel economy has been enhanced. If you’re careful, you can

now get a maximum of 65.7 mpg out of the hatchback. This is impressive – and largely due to the new model’s refined aerodynamics. The TS2 model comes well equipped with front fog lights, dusk-sensing lights and rain-sensing front wipers.

PROS

It also has Integrated Bluetooth, a heated windscreen and cruise control.

• Heavy clutch

• Economical • Good looking • Cruises well • Decent-sized boot CONS

FAST FACTS But you won’t get much change out of £20,000 if you want a brand new Mazda3 with this level of kit and a turbo diesel under the bonnet. The 1.6D TS2 will set you back £18,295. Still, in today’s market, that’s actually pretty competitive.

• Max speed: 116 mph • 0-62 mph: 11.0 secs • Combined mpg: 65.7 • Engine: 1560 cc 4 cylinder 8 valve turbo diesel • Max. power (bhp): 103 at 6000 rpm • Max. torque (lb/ft): 199 at 1750-2500 • CO2: 115 g/km • Price: £18,295 on the road
