Thetford Don’t Forget Your PJs For The Girls Night Out Don’t forget your PJs – that is the message being sent out by St Nicholas Hospice Care as it launches what it hopes will be its biggest and best ever women’s only fundraising event. In their haste to sign up for the third annual Girls Night Out moonlit walk, this sassy group of women forgot one essential – their nightwear! But hopefully come the big night itself they will be clad in their pyjamas and dressing gowns, ready to go. Girls Night Out will see hundreds of pyjama-clad women departing Angel Hill on 17th September, before walking an 11.2-mile route around the streets of Bury. And this year, a new six-mile route is being introduced to ensure everyone can take part. Jenny Baskett, Events and Challenges Fundraiser, said: “As well as the Girls Night Out being a great way to support your local Hospice, there is a tremendous
sense of fun and camaraderie on the walk. “Women who took part last year will remember the eye-catching flashing bunny ears they wore – but this year we have something even more ‘girly’ in store. “September may seem a long way off, but if you already know you want to take part in the Girls Night Out, why not sign up now and get started with raising sponsorship money?” In 2010, 550 women took part in the Girls Night Out raising nearly £90,000 for the Hospice, making it the most successful fundraising event in the charity’s history.
But this year it is hoped to smash that total, so more women are encouraged to get on board and sign up. Registration opened on Friday, 8 April. “We hope those who took part last year will invite their friends, family and work colleagues along this year,” said Jenny. “As well as raising great sums of money for the Hospice, the aim of the Girls Night Out is to have fun – which means all women, of any age or ability, can take part.” For more information, contact Jenny on 01284 715583, email jenny. baskett@stnh.org.uk or go to www.stnicholashospicecare.org.uk.
Fixed Penalty Fines For Littering In Thetford Littering comes at a considerable cost to the community but litter louts are being warned that dropping rubbish could now cost them up to £80. Breckland Council is working with its partners to tackle the issue of litter in Thetford head on and will be issuing fixed penalty notices during a crack down over the coming months. The initiative comes after The Safer Thetford Action Group (STAG) voted to make the issue of tackling litter in the Minstergate area a priority. It builds on work already being done by the council, which has been working with businesses in the area to reduce the amount of fly tipping and littering, and follows a major cleanup carried out by the council’s Pride in Breckland team with assistance from members of the public last November. Keith Fuller, Breckland Council Clean Neighbourhoods Enforcement Officer said: “Littering is not just anti-social, it is an offence. Now that STAG has determined to make the litter problem in

Minstergate a top priority, we will be using our powers to make litter louts think twice about their actions”. Starting in this month, Police Community Support Officers, Police Officers and Local Authority Enforcement Officers are planning to target the area and, using their discretion, issue Fixed Penalty Tickets to those seen dropping litter. This includes smoking related litter such as cigarette ends as well as items such as discarded chewing gum. Fixed penalty tickets of £80 may be issued. Payment of a fixed penalty can be made as an alternative to prosecution. The Travelling Menagerie Stacey & Partners Comes To Thetford
Do you hold properties that qualify as Furnished Holiday Lets for tax purposes? Will they still qualify under then new rules asks Mark Wallace of Stacey & Partners.
Shoppers in Thetford encountered a very different sort of stall at the town’s weekly market in March. and I’m really pleased that so many residents and visitors got involved. People of all ages stopped to talk with the artists and we learned some fascinating facts about the town’s history and about the lives of people who live here”.
Above: Paul Bugeba with daughters Sam aged 10 and Jasmine 15 with their badges. Rather than selling the usual market wares, artists Lisa Hirmir and Andrew Hunter from DodoLab and London artist Alice Angus distributed Travelling Menagerie badges and storybooks. Using the stories of the menagerie animals, the artists struck up conversations with almost 100 residents and visitors to find out more about their perceptions of Thetford, its stories, its history and its future at a time when the town is approaching another period of significant change. The event was the culmination of DodoLab’s weeklong ‘Travelling Menagerie Project’, one of two initiatives funded by the Breckland Partnership and designed to celebrate the history and communities of Thetford. Banners of ten animals with a connection to Thetford went up along King Street on 21st March to herald the arrival of the Travelling Menagerie. In the week that followed, the DodoLab artists met and talked with local people, using the tales associated with these animals to trigger their memories and stories about Thetford, its history of change and its current state of flux.
Lisa Hirmer said: “Andrew and I came to the town last year to find out more about the town and the people who live here. We did research in the museum, library and archives but we also spent a lot of time talking to people about the town. We often look to the natural world for inspiration and in Thetford we heard many stories of local animals wrapped up in the social and cultural history of change in the region” DodoLab will share their work when the project finishes, gathering together and reflecting upon the community’s contributions. For more information about the project and its outcomes, contact Sam Dawson on 01362 656870 or visit www.dodolab.ca
If you have a rental property that qualifies as furnished holiday let, you are able to claim preferential tax treatment. The rules have changed since the Budget in 2011. The rules that apply as from 6th April 2011are as follows:In order to qualify as a furnished holiday let, the following conditions have to be met:1. The property needs to be available for commercial letting as holiday accommodation to the public for a period of generally at least 210 days (previously 140 days). 2. During that period, the accommodation must be commercially let as holiday accommodation to member of the public for at least 105 days (previously 70 days). 3. Lettings must be no longer than 31 days. If the property qualifies as being a furnished holiday let, then the losses can only be claimed against the furnished holiday let concerned, any remaining losses can be carried forward against the first available profits
The benefits of owning furnished holiday letting accommodation are as follows:1. You can get allowances for furnishings inclusive of VAT. 2. Low interest rate 3. An effective CGT rate of 10% for gains less than 8 million or 18% if higher – this is much better treatment than for non-furnished holiday accommodation which would be taxed at 18% or 28% 4. Optional rollover relief 5. Potentially exempt for the treatment of Inheritance Tax There will also be a “period of grace” to allow properties that don’t continue to meet the actual let period for one or two years to elect to qualify throughout that period. If you wish to discuss any aspects of tax treatment then please contact Mark Wallace of Stacey & Partners who can be contacted on 01842 826100 or 07799 866022, or via email at mwallace@staceys.co.uk.

In the same week, visitors to Thetford’s Ancient House Museum were greeted by a colourful display of knitted animals; these portrayed the Menagerie beasts and were created especially for the project by the Museum’s ‘Knit and Natter’ group. Another display at the local library featured the trademark silhouettes of the Menagerie beasts as a backdrop to a collection of books containing facts and stories relating to animals as well as local history and lore. The children were asked to bring in a golden donation, then could have a Pyjama Day, Mad Hair Day, Upside-Down Day or Uniform with a Twist. The children managed to raise £50.
Red Nose Day was a normal work day for all of the children in Junior SchoolScience, Maths, Art and English lessons all still took place, just with a couple of differences. RED NOSES and FANCY DRESS! J & S Homeworks Garden patios & decking have never been more popular & are a great way to expand your living area into the garden Installing a deck or patio in your garden can be as rejuvenating to your house as building a new room. Similarly making improvements to your garden by laying new turf or revamping an existing patio area can open up your home, making it feel substantially larger, more social & accommodating. Solid structures give a garden a sense of both practicality and permanence. Whether you choose a deck or a patio depends on your site & style. A deck is ideal if your yard is sloped or has poor drainage; it provides a solid, level surface above uneven or soggy soil. A patio, in contrast, requires a level site for the cement, stone or paving slabs. Edge your patio with brick, stone, metal or plastic. Whichever option you choose, use it elsewhere in the garden to link the areas together. With decking, balustrades can be added for safety & visual effect.
Considerations to take into account when deciding whether to opt for a patio or decking & where to position it in your garden are; Review the advantages & disadvantages of placing your deck or patio in one area or another. Consider your climate, how it affects your use of the outdoors & what seasons you spend time outside. Think of how you like to entertain & for how many people. Keep your cooking style in mind, so that an often used BBQ isn’t inconveniently placed. Consider pet requirements such as the need to keep a dog confined. Keep this list on hand as you make your decisions on design & material choices. For more information or a free no obligation quote please contact Jason of J & S Homeworks to transform your garden.

Health, beauty & wellbeing Eat Before Or After Exercise? You’ve just concluded your work day and want to exercise before dinner. But you’re a little hungry. Should you eat before exercising or wait until afterward? Dieticians and fitness trainers have a variety of opinions on the subject. Jazzercise reminds us to consider what type of exercise you are going to do, and to listen to your own body. They also recommend drinking plenty of water before, during and after your workouts. Eating Before Exercising If you exercise in the morning before breakfast, sports experts recommend having a little something in your stomach before beginning, so that your body has energy to get through your workout. Keep it light, especially if you are going to be running or jumping. A small carbohydrate snack is a fast source of energy. Try a banana, a bagel, toast or yoghurt. Stay with foods you already know your
12 Dispatch May 2011
body likes. Skip acidic foods. Wait 10 to 30 minutes after eating before to avoid muscle cramps. Eating After Exercising Some fitness trainers say eating after exercising is great for those wanting to lose weight. Your increased metabolic rate after working out allows your body to use all the energy and fats from your meal immediately. Some even say that’s the time to eat treats like chocolate or chips. More sensibly, a Mayo Clinic dietician recommends eating protein and carbohydrates within two hours after your workout to help your muscles recover. Good choices for post-workout snacks include nuts, fruit, protein shakes or a hard-boiled egg. Sports drinks or juice are
also great for providing carbohydrates if you aren’t hungry enough for a meal. Before and After When taken altogether, the advice from fitness experts and dieticians is that it’s best to eat both before and after your workout: a little snack before and usually larger amounts afterward. Gauge the quantity and type of food to what time of day you exercise, the duration and intensity of your program. Most importantly, listen to your body, follow your intuition, have fun and stay fit. Judi Sheppard Missett, who turned her love of jazz dance into a worldwide dance exercise phenomenon, founded the Jazzercise dance fitness program in 1969. She has advanced the business opportunities of women and men in the
fitness industry by growing the programme into an international franchise business that today, hosts a network of 7,800 instructors teaching more than 32,000 classes weekly in 32 countries. The workout program, which offers a fusion of jazz dance, resistance training, Pilates, yoga, cardio box and Latin style movements, has positively affected millions of people worldwide. Benefits include increased cardiovascular endurance, strength, and flexibility, as well as an overall “feel good” factor. Additional Jazzercise programs include Junior Jazzercise, Jazzercise Lite and Personal Touch. CARING FOR THE ELDERLY My name is Julie and I suffer with multiple sclerosis. Approximately 30 months ago I fell and broke some of the bones in my right foot. Until then I had limited mobility and was able to walk with the aid of a frame or walking stick. Following these breakages I lost this mobility and was unable to walk at all and am now restricted to a wheelchair. This also precluded me from getting out of bed, washing and dressing myself unaided. Care is needed to carry out any of these functions. Manorcourt get me out of bed in the morning, assist with my personal care and at lunch time make sure I am comfortable for the rest of the day until my husband comes home from work. Without Manorcourt my husband would have had to give up his job which would have meant our standard of living would have been lowered considerably. He is able to go to work knowing I am in good hands. I am able to feel comfortable in my own home and relaxed knowing that this service is provided to me by “angels that treat me as a human being with dignity and courtesy. Manorcourt has always been flexible and accommodating as and when situations have arisen that dictate arrangements have to be altered. They have also been most understanding and helpful when problems have arisen. I can assure you this has occurred and were not only the normal run of the mill problems but Manorcourt have not been fazed and have assisted in resolving them to both parties satisfaction. Without the staff and services provided by Manorcourt both mine and my husband’s lives would have had to change drastically. We thank you for the first class services provided.
