Welcome to...

Thetford The Thetford Players Following the great success of the Pantomime ‘Dick Whittington’ (their first production), The Thetford Players are now well into rehearsals for their next production, which is being staged in the Carnegie Room, Thetford for three nights from Thursday 14th April 2011. Tavern Time, is an evening of variety, a cross between a Cabaret style show and a Variety Show, performed in an informal setting with seating around tables to make the feeling more intimate, kicking off with a very funny comedy. Gosforth’s Féte is a one-act play originally part of a production called Confusions which consisted of five one-act plays written in 1974 by Alan Ayckbourn. Publican Gosforth’s running the village gala, but there’s bad personal news from stalwart Milly Carter over the publicaddress system. Pink-legged Cub master Stewart Stokes discovers alcohol, there’s a fine vicar, and Councillor Mrs Piece gets severely

Dispatch April 2011

dishevelled and that’s before the rain. Gosforth’s Fete starts as drama and develops into well-choreographed chaos as everything goes wrong and climaxes as full-blown farce. After a short interval, there will be singing, songs through the decades, starting in the 40’s with the likes of ‘Underneath the Arches’ and ‘A Nightingale Sang In Berkley Square’. Taking in all era’s and styles, from Lulu’s ‘Shout’ to ‘Abba’, Songs from the hit musical ‘Les Miserables’ to ‘Spice Girls’, and everything in between. Sit and enjoy the music, there will be plenty of opportunity to join in and sing along if you know the words.

The show will climax with a show stopping rendition of ‘You Can’t Stop The Beat’ from Hairspray. Before the show and during the interval there will be a magician circulating round the tables performing ‘up close’ tricks. So there is definitely something for everyone. Tickets are on sale from Leaping Hare, Belmont House, 20 Kings Street, Thetford. 01842 751975. £7.50 for Adults and £5 for Children & Concessions. There are also some sponsorship opportunities for local businesses to get involved in, if you would like to

Bennett Homes Makes Plugging More Leaks Sure Owls Get Home First

Are you a plumber or in the building trade? Have you disclosed all your income? HMRC may believe that you have not and are offering you a chance to come clean! So says Mark Wallace of Stacey & Partners.

Bennett Homes, the award-winning building company established in East Anglia for nearly 65 years, has recently seen the completion of another home – this time for owls. Adam Bell, Land Director at Bennett Homes said: “As a company we work hard to be sensitive to our surroundings and the owl nesting box is a perfect example of this. When we heard about the importance of boxes for the future of barn owls in this country we were determined to do our bit to help. We hope that our actions will ensure the future of barn owls in this area for many years to come”. Above: Adam Bell, Land Director Bennett Homes with Nigel Middleton from the Hawk and Owl Trust with the new owl nesting box. With up to three quarters of British Barn Owls estimated to be living in man-made owl nest boxes, Bennett Homes wanted to play its part in ensuring that the owls native to its new site in Attleborough had a comfortable home. The company which has already launched its new Heisker Gardens development in Attleborough, has also secured a second site The Oaks, on Slough Lane, just off Buckenham Road.

Nigel Middleton, Conservation Officer – Eastern Region for the Hawk and Owl Trust added: “We were delighted to hear of Bennett Homes’ initiative in erecting a nest box. This demonstrates their commitment as a responsible developer, with concern for the area in which they plan to build. The Trust was pleased to supply the box and help with advice in terms of the height and orientation to ensure that it is suitable for the birds’ use”.

The initiative is aimed at those within the plumbing industry. Given the catchy title of the Plumbers’ Tax Safe Plan (or ‘PTSP’ for short) the aim is to encourage those in the plumbing industry who have not declared their income to HMRC to come forward by 31 May 2011. Those who do come forward will be rewarded with a lower penalty rate than that levied on those found out by HMRC. The scheme is billed as a fresh start. It provides an opportunity for those who may have fallen by the wayside to get their tax affairs up to date. HMRC must be notified of the intention to make a disclosure by 31 May 2011 any tax due must be paid by 31 August 2011. There are effectively two stages to the plan – a notification stage and a disclosure stage. The notification stage, this requires the taxpayer to tell HMRC that he or she wishes to be involved in the plan. At the notification stage it is not necessary to provide details of undeclared income. This is disclosed later HMRC will confirm that they have received the notification to disclose and provide a disclosure reference number (DRN), which must be quoted on the disclosure.

The second stage is the disclosure stage. This must be done by 31 August 2011. As part of the disclosure it is necessary to work out the tax and Class 4 National Insurance due for each year and the associated interest and penalties. Although normally penalty rates can be as much as 100 per cent of tax undeclared, under the PTSP the penalty rates are 0 per cent, 10 per cent or 20 per cent depending on the reasons why the tax was not paid. In the event that the plumber is unable to pay the full amount by that date, it may be possible to agree an instalment payment option with HMRC. As is often the case, for every ‘carrot’ there is also a stick. In this case, HMRC will find those who do not come forward. In preparation for the plan, they have been using their investigation powers to collate information on plumbers’ tax affairs and this may be used to open an investigation into the affairs of those who do not come forward. Mark Wallace can be contacted at Stacey & Partners Thetford office, telephone number 01842 826100

Care And Maintenance Of Your Lawn Mower If you have a lawn mower and want to make your investment last it needs to be regularly maintained, this will keep it running more efficiently which in turn will save you money. Does your mower not start as well as it did? Does it run poorly? And is the quality of the lawn cut not as good as it was? Here are a few simple tips to help you keep your mower in tip top condition. Always try to use fresh fuel, fuel older than 30 days starts to deteriorate it loses octane and gains moisture which can lead to gum deposits in the carburettor causing poor engine performance. If you plan to leave your mower for any length of time you should use a fuel additive which will prolong the life of the fuel and prevents build-up in the carburettor. Replace the engine oil and oil filter as per manufacturer’s instructions but usually about every 50 Hrs. Check the engine oil level every 5 hours and top up if needed. Replace the spark plug every 100 Hrs, plug type and gap can usually be found in the operator’s manual. Service the air filter every 25 hrs or every season, whichever comes first, if the filter is dirty then the mower may run badly and could also cause damage. Remove the filter and gently tap it on a flat surface if the filter is

very dirty, replace it with a new one. Service your deck and blades, it’s a good idea and safer to remove the plug lead from the sparkplug before commencing any service work on the deck or blades. Keep your deck clean and free from debris especially if your mower mulches, as a clogged deck will not mulch efficiently. Clean your deck with soapy water and a garden hose, it’s easier to clean if done regularly and will keep your deck from corroding prematurely. Keep your blades sharp, this will make your mower more efficient and also give a better finish to your cut grass. Never attempt to sharpen the blades while still attached to the mower. Blades should be sharpened evenly taking special care to keep them balanced. An unbalanced blade will leave an uneven cut on the lawn and could eventually lead to mower or engine damage. Self propelled mowers or ride on mowers need a little more attention, they have drive belts which need to be check for wear or damage and also pulleys and belt idlers which have bearings that can become

seized or worn. They often have gearboxes which have oils that need checking or changing. Ride on mowers often have grease points on the steering axle and also Pneumatic tyres which should be checked for correct pressures. By caring and maintaining your lawn mower you will make cutting the lawn

a more pleasurable and hassle free experience and the quality of your lawn will reflect this. If you haven’t the time or feel that your mower needs that extra special attention give us a call at Cranworth Farm Services and we will make sure your mower is ready for the season a head.

Homes & Gardens Replace Your Windows? Plant Heritage There are a few clear signs that can help you reach a decision. Ask yourself the following questions: Do my windows have condensation or a frost buildup? If you touch the interior pane of glass is it cold in the winter or warm in the summer? When next to your window does it feel colder than the rest of the house? From inside, take a lighted candle and hold it in line with the window frame, does the flame flicker anywhere around the frame? Look at your windows outside; is the trim rotting, cracking or missing? Is the glass broken or cracked anywhere? Do your windows ever get stuck or won’t stay closed or open? Are you unhappy with the way your windows look? If you answered yes to any of the questions above, it is time to replace your windows.

Health, beauty & wellbeing Joy Of Juicing Would you like a quick and tasty way to get your daily dose of fruits and vegetables in one convenient glass? Try making fresh juice at home. When juicing, the pulp is extracted, leaving you with a smooth, delicious, preservativefree beverage teeming with nutrients. Jazzercise recommends juicing as a healthy alternative and also reminds us to include whole foods in our diet for added fibre. When you juice at home, you get to choose exactly what flavours you enjoy most. Experiment and create new recipes by modifying the ingredients a bit each day based on the produce you have on hand. Home juicers are available in many stores and online, starting at around £50. Features to consider include entry chute width, how much pulp is removed,

quietness of operation and ease of clean-up. Here are some tips for easy, fun, healthful juicing: Balanced Blends Balance fruit’s natural sugars and acidity by including veggies for their alkalinity. Celery and cucumber both juice very well thanks to their high water content. Drink it Now Without preservatives found in bottled beverages, your juice will taste best and have the most health benefits when you drink it immediately after making it. Store freshly-made juice in an airtight container in the refrigerator for a maximum of 24 hours.

Stock Up Juicing requires more product than it may appear at first. Once you begin, you’ll learn how much to have on hand so there’s enough to share with everyone in your household. Go Green Add green veggies to your blend. The flavours of kale, broccoli, spinach and chard can almost be masked when juiced with fruit, though the colour of your concoction will take on their green tints. Go easy on the quantity – green juice is powerful. Lighten up with Lemon Lemons and limes brighten the flavour. Begin by juicing half a lemon or lime and see how you like it before graduating to the whole fruit. Whole Foods Alternative For a thicker beverage more like a smoothie, use a strong food processor to make a drink of entire fruits and vegetables, pulp and all. Be sure to add liquid such as water or milk for more fluid consistency. Recipe ideas: Try some of these delightful juicing combinations: • Carrot, apple and celery • Carrot, apple and beets (peel beets before putting them into the juicer) • Tomatoes, celery, cucumber, carrots, half a lime and salt for a veggie cocktail

12 Dispatch April 2011

Experiment with quantities to find the flavour blends you like best. Drink to your health! Judi Sheppard Missett, who turned her love of jazz dance into a worldwide dance exercise phenomenon, founded the Jazzercise dance fitness program in 1969. The parking clock must show your time of arrival and be displayed next to your Blue Badge when you park either: On yellow lines or In other places where there is a time restriction

This may mean changes to your diet, or being more active. Small changes can make a big difference to your health – making you feel better, giving you more energy, helping you to sleep more soundly. People who are the least active stand to gain most by becoming a little more active, more often.

• On single or double yellow lines for up to three hours, except where there is a ban on loading or unloading • At ‘on-street’ parking meters and payand-display machines for free and for as long as they need to

I use Dispatch as my main source of advertising as I feel it reaches the people that I would like to be my clients – that is local people in the area carrying on their everyday business. It is perfect for me as it goes out to homes in the area and people keep it as source of information after they have read it. Dispatch has been one of my main sources of new clients over the past years and is perfect for me. Kerry Butcher Accountancy Services, Tel: 01953 457173.
