Thetford Works Begin On Thetford’s Haling Path Work has begun to improve Thetford’s Haling Path as part of the Moving Thetford Forward Partnership.

Above: Haling Path Sign The project, which is the first major regeneration project to take place under Moving Thetford Forward will include the clean up of the path and the creation of a piled wall preventing the footway falling into the river. Works are due to be completed by the end of March at a cost of around £850,000 with £600,000 coming from Moving Thetford Forward and £250,000 from Norfolk County Council.

Attending the launch of the works at the Haling Path, William Nunn, Chairman of Moving Thetford Forward said: “The Haling Path has been in need of improvement for some time so it is great that the Moving Thetford Forward Partnership has been able to fund these works to begin. These works are the first of many regeneration projects planned for Thetford and it is very exciting for the town.”

Possibly The Largest Table Top Sale Taking Place In Thetford! A local charity which runs a community Ballpark and a cooking club for young people is organising a fundraising event in Thetford to raise much needed finances to support its activities. The event is to take place on Saturday 23rd April from 10am and will be held at the Guildhall on Market place, Thetford. There will be lots of different stalls around including Liz Bishop Photography, Avon, Bodyshop, Jamie at Home, Lucy Lou Handbags, Jewellery, Home Made Cakes, Cards & Crafts, Local Charities, Raffle & Tombola and Supreme Soups etc….. Proceeds from the raffle & refreshments are to go to TCA activities for Young people in Thetford. Terry Jermy, TCA Project Co-ordinator explains “The TCA are committed to providing these activities to the young people of West Thetford, fundraising is always important but more so with our current climate. We have applied for various funding to help us continue for the

If you have assets that are standing at a capital gains loss, it may be useful to consider the sale of loss making assets to shelter gains.

Inheritance Tax Are you planning gifts? There is an Annual exemption of £3,000 that can be carried forward for one year if unused. So did you use last years? Also don’t forget small gifts allowances, gifts for marriage and gifts of normal expenditure out of income. Businesses Businesses – if you are looking to invest in equipment and have a 5th April year end make sure your Annual Investment Allowance is used. This year it stands at £100,000 but it goes down to £25,000 as from 1st April 2011. Thetford Works! Helping People Into Work As well as the One Stop Bus and their work with META, our team of Service Connectors, Helene and Sarah along with their manager Adam also work in partnership with The Keystone Development Trust delivering the Thetford Works! project. The project aims to ease work related issues for people in and around Thetford, it may be that confidence issues need to be worked on or clients need access to appropriate skills training to help them to enter the job market. The team help individuals, who are furthest from the work market, into voluntary or paid employment and provide them with the support they need to overcome the barriers they face to do so. Mandie Patterson, project co-ordinator said “We have been working with the Breckland Partnership on our “Thetford Works!” project since October 2010. The team, Adam, Helene and Sarah, have helped co-ordinate our neighbourhood work clubs each Wednesday, providing input, feedback and support to the existing team.” “Clients have found the team very supportive and have expressed thanks

on several occasions for the work they do helping with cv building, job searching and providing details of other organisations where they can find support.” “Having Breckland involved in the project has meant that we can capture a wider range of clients and see more people who require our help for reviews each week due to the manpower they provide. They have even seen clients on board the ‘Breckland Bus’ when they visit the estate and the feedback from the users has been incredibly positive!” Adrian Stasiak, Breckland Council Executive Member for Communities and Benefits said: “It is a really positive project to be involved in and Keystone’s commitment to helping local people into work is very encouraging. The team have enjoyed meeting and helping clients through the work clubs, providing several with CVs and the skills to write them. One of their clients recently became employed and others have been helped onto training courses.”

Thetford Grammar School The day had finally arrived! Junior School Council had prepared for the birdwatch by ensuring that the bird table was well stocked for the week before the event, so that the birds would get used to its new position. After the last of the Seniors had disappeared after their House meetings, the children watching at the windows could see a flutter here, a flash there until gradually more and more birds became brave enough to swoop down to the bird table to eat. Year 6 were very busy as when they were not counting at the windows, they were given the challenge to build a bird nest out of twigs, make bird fat balls which they then took out to hang in the playground (after the watch was over though!) as well as finding out bird facts about the birds. The children found making the nests very difficult, but these were able to hold a large amount of eggs! Great designing Year 6.

Meanwhile, Goldcrest were concealing themselves in the ‘hide’ so that they would not scare the birds whilst they were watching them. When not taking turns at the peepholes, the children were also partaking of a morning munch alongside the birds. They had brought in lots of different types of seeds - pumpkin, sunflower, linseed, sesame and poppy - as well as various kinds of fruit - grapes, raspberries, dried apricots and raisins. The children also got to make their own strawberry smoothie. This involved pouring, measuring, peeling, cutting and then watching the blender whizz everything around. Everyone got to try new things and discover that they liked some of them!

Every good cook knows that a clean oven is essential to great tasting food and a kitchen filled with delicious aromas.

If you suffer from shortness of breath or have been diagnosed by a lung condition such as COPD, bronchiectasis and emphysema, come along and meet us. We meet at the Cloverfield Community Centre in Thetford on the third Wednesday of the month to provide information and support to help manage breathless, which is increasing problem in our community. Each meeting is attended by a local respiratory nurse and also a speaker on health or related topics. Plus there

is always a chance to have a natter to others in the same boat – over a cup of tea!

Thetford Cyclists Are More Security Minded

Fun2play Celebrates Its 8th Anniversary!

Police and partners have joined forces to increase cyclist’s security and safety awareness as part of a neighbourhood priority.

Fun2play Ltd, in Thetford, celebrated its 8th Anniversary on Tuesday 15th February.

Officers have educated bike riders about crime prevention and keeping safe on the roads. Between Saturday 1st January and Thursday 10th February there were no reported cycle thefts in the neighbourhood. Thetford Sgt Steve Burke said: “We are encouraging bike owners to not be complacent about cycle security. My advice to all cyclists would be to always lock and secure your cycle, even when leaving it unattended for a short-while.” Officers have been asked by residents to carry on with the good work to reduce cycle thefts and offences, especially as spring approaches. Police have also stepped up patrols in Castle Street at key times. As a result of the high visibility policing presence in the neighbourhood, reported incidents of criminal damage and anti-social behaviour have reduced. This area was a priority for the last three months.

A number of resident groups across Thetford have recently attended a meeting with the Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) and partner agencies to help identify community issues. Thetford Youth Council also represented young people in the town at the priority-setting meeting last week. The suggestions were taken into consideration by the multi-agency team at the Safer Thetford Action Group (STAG) meeting. The following priorities have been adopted: 1. Cycle security and safety concerns in Thetford town centre. 2. Unsafe and inappropriate parking outside Thetford schools. 3. Littering issues in the vicinity of Minstergate, Thetford.
