SOUTH NORFOLK COUNCIL

Council awarded £70,000 for South Norfolk’s communities outh Norfolk Council has been awarded £70,000 from the Department for Communities and Local Government to build on the success of their work within the community.

S

The Council will use the grant to expand its network of Community Connectors and the services they offer. Currently the Connectors work within the district to put people in touch with services, agencies and community groups that can improve people’s quality of life and help prevent problems escalating. Currently the Council has 3 part-time Connectors working in Diss, Wymondham and Costessey, but the grant will assist in increasing the numbers to cover the whole district. In a small change to the current approach, the community connectors will also be bringing their local knowledge and experience to GPs surgeries in a new initiative called Social Prescribing.

NSBA LTD

Social Prescribing offers 1:1 suppor t to people to connect them to non-medical and community suppor t services to help improve their health and wellbeing. South Norfolk Council’s Director of Growth and Localism Tim Horspole said: “Social Prescribing is an innovative and growing movement, which has the potential to reduce the financial burden on the NHS, and a multitude of other services. It has been estimated that 20% of patients consult their GP for what is primarily a social problem. A large propor tion of health outcomes are also determined by social factors. Social prescription seeks to alleviate some of the pressures on the NHS; by addressing unmet needs of patients. Mr Horspole added: “Whether a person is suffering from dementia, is an isolated

first time mum, or someone suffering from depression after a bereavement, our Connectors will be able to point them in the right direction to get the help and suppor t they need. “It’s also true that people who are engaged in social prescribing are more likely to go on to become active members of the community – which is great as it will help to create stronger communities which promote wellbeing and where people help each other.” The Connectors work as par t of the South Norfolk Help Hub, a multi-agency team, which includes police, social workers and council staff, that work together with families and individuals to offer long-term solutions to problems, such as the threat of homelessness or financial hardship. SOUND SLEEP

MAY be the time for a new mattress? or most of us a third of our life is spent asleep, meaning the wear on our mattress over time is considerable, yet a staggering 25% of people wouldn’t consider changing their mattress – even after more than 10 year s. It is hardly surprising then that 58% of the population complain of waking feeling stiff and achy.

F

At Sound Sleep, we stock a variety of brands and different types of mattresses, for example pocket sprung, memory foam, latex and so on. Each manufacturer has different mattresses that offer different levels of support and comfort. When mattress shopping, it is essential to ask for help. Our Sound Sleep Dream Team are highly trained mattress specialists and are on hand to advise you, not to high pressure you in to buying

“ It is scientifically proven that couples sleep better in a bigger bed. The more space you have the freer you can move without disturbing your par tner” Take our Bed MOT (Mattress Obsolescence Test) to find out if you need a new bed. Answer yes or no to the following questions. • Is your bed seven years old or more? • Would it be embarrassing if the neighbours saw it without the covers? • Does it make suspicious noises in the night? • Did you have your best recent nights sleep in a bed other than yours? • Are your waking up more frequently unrefreshed and aching? • Do you and your partner roll towards each other unintentionally? • Are you too close to your partner to sleep comfor tably? • Is it sagging? • Does it feel lumpy in the night? If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, then it your bed has FAILED its MOT and a trip to Sound Sleep for some new bed or mattress advice is essential.

something that may not be suitable. Following are just a few quick tips to consider when bed shopping. How do I know which one is right for me? A mattress that is supportive and comfortable is important, but remember, your requirement for support will differ depending on your weight and build. The best bed for your back is not always a firm one.You need a bed that will provide the right support and comfort for you. When laying on your side, ideally your spine should be parallel to the mattress and your spine should not sag down or bow up. Also remember as we age, our support requirements change. A very firm mattress when you were 35 may not be so suitable when you’re 45, comfort is important too! Trying them out Give your self plenty of time and wear loose clothing, this helps you turn and get in and

out of beds in store. Our Mattress Specialists will point you in the right direction. Try the advised mattresses for as long as possible to get a good ‘feel’ for them. If you sleep together, shop together Always shop with your partner, the bed must be suitable for both of you. As it is inevitable one of you may have to compromise! Size matters It is scientifically proven that couples sleep better in a bigger bed. The more space you have the freer you can move without disturbing your partner. This is also a good idea if one or both of you get hot in bed. If you are thinking about just a new mattress, before coming to visit us in store, check what kind of base you have and it’s condition, as some bases may be unsuitable for a new mattress. We will of course be on hand to give you the correct advice and information. All of our divans and mattresses are sourced from National Bed Federation members, so what you are buying is exactly what it says it is, it’s made from new and clean materials and it meets the strict British Standard fire regulations. More information can be found at www.bedfed.org.uk Now that you have chosen a new bed and mattress, don’t forget that pillows are very important too. A cheap, unsupportive pillow can cause neck and back problems. These are just as important as your new mattress. For more help and advice, visit our Dream Team who can talk you through all the pros and cons of various mattresses. We also pride ourselves on having the most up to date mattress technology (as well as the old fashioned technology too!). Sleep has never felt so good!! www.soundsleepbeds.co.uk www.sleepcouncil.com

The key with mattress buying is to try out as wide a variety of options as possible to find the most suitable for you (and your partner). Given the amount of time you spend in bed, it is important to spend a reasonable amount of time in store trying out new ones, especially if you have been experiencing pains that could come from your existing mattress. It this instance, it may be worth having a chat with your chiropractor for some advice on what they advise is suitable for your back. 06 | Wymondham & Dereham

Changes In Your Tax

very time I sit down to write a piece for those lovely people at the Dispatch magazine, I never quite know how to start. So this time I thought I would look back and see what I wrote in May 2016 – just to see what has changed! Well the first topic I wrote about was that May is officially my favourite month of the year with many spring flowers including bluebells and freesias. 12 months on, May is still my favourite month of the year with so much to look forward to and all the summer events just round the corner.

E

There is so much to see and do around and about at this time of year, that I doubt that anyone wants to be stuck indoors spending ages on their tax affairs. But despite the distractions there is actually quite a bit going on in the world of accounting so it may just be worth spending a few minutes checking out the changes so that you are up to date and don’t miss out.

08 | Wymondham & Dereham

Unless you have been hiding under the bed or in a cave in Madagascar, I doubt you could avoid the “making tax digital” plans which HMRC are keen to implement as soon as possible. These plans have just been reported

There is so much to see and do around and about at this time of year, that I doubt that anyone wants to be stuck indoors spending ages on their tax affairs

on by the House of Lords who have made some radical proposals – so for now sit tight and watch this space. Be rest assured that whatever the final outcome, we will make sure that are there to help in any way we can.

In the mean time we have recently been trying to assist a number of our clients with the changes to the flat rate VAT scheme. The flat rate scheme used to be ideal for clients who needed simplified VAT systems and had very little in the way of purchases or expenses to set against their sales VAT. Now with the introduction of the new 16.5% limited cost trader rules, suddenly the flat rate scheme doesn’t seem quite as appealing. If you have previously been using the flat rate VAT scheme and are now concerned that the new rules may be affecting you – why not come and talk to us – We have run through the new rules with many of our clients and can help opt in or out of the flat rate scheme whatever you decide to do. April 2017 also saw a big increase in the number of employers who reached their staging dates for auto enrolment. We have been able to help a large number of our payroll clients to fulfil their duties and most

www.DispatchMagazine.co.uk

have been really relieved to find that the actual pension requirements were not as costly or as onerous as they had first thought. The initial percentage of contributions is really quite low and there is no need to spend a lot of money unless you really want to – there are many schemes out there which cost far less than anticipated. Remember if you are an employer – check when your enrolment duties start and don’t get caught out. We will never tell you which pension provider to use, this must always be your decision but we can help you to get through the process unscathed. A popular question so far this tax year amongst the KBA clients has been – “should I go limited?” Deciding whether or not to form a limited company and transfer your business into a legal entity is a big decision and definitely not one that you should make quickly or

www.DispatchMagazine.co.uk

lightly. There are a lot of advantages to becoming a limited company, but equally there are some disadvantages too. Remember that if you hear someone telling you how wonderful it is to be limited and that there are no down sides – they are likely to be: Living in cloud cuckoo land, Extremely lucky or completely misunderstanding the entire system! The biggest piece of advice that I would give is, don’t rush into anything – make sure that you understand all the implications of becoming limited, the different ways to account for salaries and dividends. Make sure you understand when your year ends will be, when your tax is due, what savings you are likely to make and ensure that everything is tied up transferring your old business into the new incorporation. Don’t leave any lose ends and don’t leave any assets in the old business. It is really impor tant to ensure

that you obtain a true and fair valuation of all equipment and assets – so that no questions can be asked later when the entire process is not fresh in your mind. Incorporating a company can be relatively straight forward but make sure that you understand exactly who is going to be a director, what the shareholdings should be, who should be appointed as shareholders etc and most of all get your timings right. Companies House and HMRC have different filing requirements and it can be costly and stressful if you get into a muddle. Why not come and have a chat with us first – we can run through all the possibilities and make sure that you know exactly what you want to achieve, what the criteria are and the deadlines. Most of all whatever you decide to do in May – make it count for you and enjoy every minute.

THEATRE / DANCE Summer. Autumn. Winter. Spring.

Saturday/Sunday, 13th/14th May (2pm)

In Summer. Autumn. Winter. Spring. the internationally-renowned theatre company, Quarantine, takes a look at the human life-cycle in a brand-new show focusing on living, dying and one’s relationship with time. Comprising three live performances and a film, the work’s epic in scale, ambition and subject with each piece having a distinctive flavour. For instance, Summer. gathers dozens of people on stage responding to events on the day of performance, Autumn. unfolds as a two-hour interval in history, full of food, conversation and clairvoyance, Winter. meets a woman preparing for death and Spring. focuses on pregnant women and imagines lives as yet unlived. Chotto Desh

Thursday 18th May (7.30pm)

Fusing dance, storytelling, interactive animation and a specially-composed score, Chotto Desh (Bengali for ‘small homeland’) is a bewitching, thrilling and poignant tale of a young man’s dreams and memories 12 | Wymondham & Dereham

from Britain to Bangladesh. The work draws upon Khan’s unique quality of cross-cultural storytelling, weaving together a playful story of a boy who angers the forest gods by collecting their forbidden honey. The production’s reworked from Akram Khan’s Olivier Award-winning autobiographical show DESH and is adapted by director, Sue Buckmaster, of Theatre-Rites. We Meet in Paradise

Wednesday/Thursday, 17th/18th May (8.30pm) A roaming wooden box searches for a place to land after a long journey through unknown lands. Masked characters emerge to tell tales of their escape and arrival, dreams and fears - and how they started their lives anew. Exile is the name of their destination. Asylum is their hope. For this mask-theatre piece, TheatreFragile met with local refugees and support workers to gather their stories and experiences. These unheard voices will take centre-stage of an interactive performance poetically presenting the complex issues of exile. Super Sunday

Monday/Tuesday, 15th/16th May (8pm)

After the storming success of White Nights at last year’s festival, the riotous Finnishbased circus troupe, Race Horse Company,

returns to Norwich Theatre Royal with their brand-new show, Super Sunday, which is big on flying, big on thrills and big on mindblowing skills. VISUAL ARTS Museum of the Moon

And in their brand-new work for this year’s festival,VR Playground, audiences are invited to don a VR headset, jump on a playground swing and be transported inside an experimental virtual-reality ride created by the world’s only Thrill Engineer, Professor Brendan Walker, working in tandem with a team of highly-qualified technicians. MUSIC American Style

Friday 19th May (8pm)

Philip Glass and Laurie Anderson - who’ll be joined by special guest, Rubin Kodheli, in American Style - have collaborated over many years on various live and recording projects and came together to create American Style in 2015, a work which has grown and developed into a unique piece of art. Trading songs and improvising, the pair approach the piece with a loose and inventive feel - a collaboration with the ghostly and majestic spoken performances and words of such good friends as Allen Ginsberg, Lou Reed and Leonard Cohen. Naturally 7

Sunday 14th May (7.30pm)

In a music world rife with technological tricks of the trade, Naturally 7 celebrates the beauty of the human voice. The collective bring their distinct and charming a cappella style to gospel, R&B, soul and jazz, performing classics in ways you’ve never heard them before. The group has toured the world with artists as diverse as Michael Bublé, Quincy Jones and Ludacris while their rendition of ‘In the Air Tonight’, performed on the Paris Metro, quickly gained them over six million views on YouTube. PERFORMANCE The Way You Look (At Me) Tonight

Tuesday/Wednesday 23rd/24th May (7.30pm)

Dancing, singing, telling stories and asking questions, leading UK disabled artist, Claire Cunningham, team up with international choreographer and performer, Jess Curtis, in The Way You Look (At Me) Tonight, comprising performance, original music and video to wrestle (sometimes literally) with important questions about our habits and practices of

perceiving each other and the world. The work’s a collaboration with noted author and philosopher of perception Dr Alva Noe, video artist Yoann Trellu, composer Matthias Herrmann and dramaturge, Luke Pell.

many art forms presented in unusual indoor and outdoor spaces, festivals, venues, galleries and digital worlds.

The Arms of Sleep

Following the multi-award-winning What I Learned From Johnny Bevan, Luke Wright’s second verse play deals with love, loss and belief against a backdrop of scuzzy indie venues and ’80s politics. One can expect jangling guitars, visceral verse and a Morrissey-sized measure of hear tache. Frankie Vah - written and performed by Luke Wright - is directed by Joe Murphy with a score by Ian Catskilkin and lighting by Tom Clutterbuck.

Monday 22nd to Friday 26th May (9.30pm to 8am)

In The Arms of Sleep - a ten-hour choral piece featuring specially-written music by Helen Chadwick, Orlando Gough, Jonathan Baker and John Hopkins - is this year’s offering from The Voice Project. They’ll gather 40 audience members to form a choir and travel into the space of sleep where galaxies and so forth are born. The setting’s the Georgiandesigned Assembly House in Theatre Street, Norwich, where guests will spend the night surrounded by sound and shadows, balancing and drifting between sleep and wakefulness. Night Magic

Monday/Tuesday, 22nd/23rd May (10pm)

Inspired by turn-of-the-century spiritualism, Victorian sideshows and the golden era of vaudeville, Night Magic lifts the veil and enters into the realms of the unknown. One will witness death-defying magic, euphoric aerial acts and enchanting live music in this exciting new show from home-grown talents, Hocus Pocus Theatre and Gossamer Thread’s Vaudeville Co. Audiences are invited to stay after the performance to dance with Death and soak up the atmosphere as DJ Jazzlord spins a heavenly mix of jazz and gems from his vintage vinyl collection. Rear View

Thursday 25th to Sunday 28th May (various times)

The streets of Norwich will become the stage as one takes a tour aboard IOU’s custom-made bus for an unforgettable journey. Beginning in a life-drawing class, Rear View quickly becomes a moving adventure about a woman’s life led by performance poets, Cecilia Knapp and Jemima Foxtrot, who’ll be making reflections, predictions and observations that blur the line between reality and fiction. IOU has a 40-year-old tradition of creating work that combines

Friday/Saturday, 26th/27th May (7.30pm)

MUSIC Dee Dee Bridgewater

Saturday 20th May (8pm)

A fantastic live performer, Dee Dee Bridgewater - a Grammy and Tony Awardwinning artist, producer and UN Ambassador - is one of today’s leading female jazz vocalists. She puts her own unique spin on standards as well as taking intrepid leaps of faith in re-envisioning jazz classics. Dee Dee will be performing songs from her new album ‘Memphis’ while returning to her roots but will also be offering a ground-breaking reimagining of American Blues and R&B classics. Britten Sinfonia Beethoven with Thomas Adès

Friday 26th May (7.30pm)

Centred on the work and influence of Beethoven, the audience will first hear his witty first symphony paired with the virtuosic second complemented by Gerald Barry’s powerful new setting of Beethoven’s famous love letters to his ‘immortal beloved’. Hearing how one of the most celebrated composer/conductors working today will interpret and illuminate these iconic works is set to be a major event in the classicalmusic side to the festival. Reason in Madness

Monday 22nd May (7.30pm)

The idea of madness has a strange allure. It has fascinated composers for centuries. For instance, Shakespeare’s hypnotic portrayal of the ill-fated Ophelia provided no shortage of inspiration for a rich array of art songs. In Reason in Madness, world-renowned soprano, Carolyn Sampson, is joined by pianist, Joseph Middleton, for an exploration of madness in music ranging from the unsettling beauty of Richard Strauss’ ethereal ‘Ophelia Lieder’ to the sumptuous hedonism of Debussy’s ‘Chanson de Bilitis’. The festival runs from Friday 12th to Sunday 28th May. The box office is situated at Norwich Theatre Royal: 01603 766400. Online booking: www.nnfestival. org.uk. In January this year, Her Royal Highness visited Quidenham to meet with staff and families for an update on the appeal as EACH needs to secure a further £5 million to make its vision a reality. EACH provides care and support for nearly 800 children, young people and family members across the region, with 361 currently using its Quidenham hospice. enough to just look at how you can change your life and earn an unlimited monthly income which grows and grows ever y month, take a look at our website and get instant access to see how simple it is to be in control of your own destiny. This is NOT a ‘Get Rich Quick Scheme’ but it is a ‘Get Rich Quicker System’ where you can earn a full time ‘residual’ income wor king just a few spare hour s each week, and change your life in a ver y shor t space of time. Why should you wor k 40 plus hour s a week for 40 plus year s of your life? So what is ‘Residual Income’? Residual income (also called passive income) is income that continues to be generated after the initial effor t has been made. Compare this to what most people focus on earning: linear income, which is “one-shot” compensation or payment in the form of a fee, wage, commission or salar y which is directly propor tional

to the number of hour s invested in it 40 hour s of pay for 40 hour s of wor k. Here’s an example of Residual Income; In 1998 my college spent 35 minutes showing a fr iend of his how this business wor ks. Last month he got paid for that conver sation for the 216th time for that 35 minute chat, 18 year s ago. So… how soon can you spare 10 minutes so I can answer all the questions I know you’ll have, and explain how you can get star ted immediately? Remember this: “If you think it’s too good to be tr ue, I still get paid. If you take a look and join me, we BOTH get paid. If you don’t join me, well I still get paid!” Take a look at our website and get instant access to find out more about this great oppor tunity. www.Successpro.me.uk

50 GEMS OF NORFOLK!

Dispatch Magazine editor Jonathan Hor swell turns the tables to inter view Pete Goodrum about his new book. Other than those , how did you go about choosing your ’50 Gems’? It wasn’t easy! There’s so much to love about Norfolk it was difficult to refine the choice down to just 50!

’50 Gems of Norfolk’ by Pete Goodrum is published by Amberley Books and is available in all good bookstores, and online. Interview By Jonathan Horswell, Editor, Dispatch Magazine

s you probably know, our regular Fine People columnist is also an author, as well as a tv and r adio presenter. I couldn’t resist the oppor tunity to tur n the tables and inter view him about his latest book!

A

So this is a bit different Pete - you’re the one being inter viewed for Fine City. It’s usually the other way round! I know! It does feel r ather odd. Off you go! What made you wr ite this book, after your previous r ather more histor ically dr iven books? It was an odd coincidence . As you know I wr ite and present the Mustard TV ser ies ‘Norfolk’s Hidden Gems’. My publisher s asked me to wr ite a book called ’50 Gems of Norfolk’ and initially I was, to be honest, a bit confused. I thought there must be some sor t of link. It tur ned out to be a happy coincidence . Your wor k on the tv ser ies must have helped though. It did. Needless to say some of the ‘gems’ I’d visited for the tv ser ies found their way into the book.

You seem to have covered quite a r ange of places. I have . I wanted it to be wide r anging to reflect the sheer var iety of the county. So I’ve chosen some towns and villages, and covered some aspects of Norwich. But I’ve also selected some intangible things - like the Norfolk accent for instance . And some people who I think are impor tant to Norfolk and its histor y. You say in the introduction that it’s a ‘per sonal’ selection. I do. And I really wanted to make that point. As I was saying ear lier, there’s so much to choose from, and it would be impossible to make a definitive choice . So it’s my selection. And I’ve featured the 50 Gems alphabetically - as far as possible - to be fair about it. The book really does under line how much you love Norfolk. Thank you! I’m glad that comes through. I do love Norwich and Norfolk. It’s my home , it’s where I’m from. There so much that’s interesting about our histor y, and so much that goes on here now. I want the book to be attr active to locals as well as visitor s. I think you’ve achieved that! I was amused to see that you included Jack Valentine! Ha! I decided on him ver y ear ly in the process. He appear s to be genuinely, uniquely, ‘Norfolk’. And in a way that’s what the book is about. Things and places that make Norfolk unique . Because it is! I share your enthusiasm. And I know your reader s will. Thanks. I appreciate that. What’s it like being the inter viewer? It’s been a pleasure . But shall we change places again now? I’ve got magazines to edit! Fair enough. I’ve got a column to wr ite!

I do love Norwich and Norfolk. It’s my home, it’s where I’m from. There so much that’s interesting about our history, and so much that goes on here now.

THE HEARING CARE CENTRE Helping those with Hearing Loss in East Anglia f you are reading this ar ticle it is because you suspect that someone you care about might have a hearing loss. And you want to help. Hearing is an easy thing to take for granted.

I

Initially, you may have a giggle at their misunderstanding of words or the bizarre interpretations they come up with, but after a while the daily miscommunication will lead to concern and frustration of having to repeat yourself. Age-related hearing loss generally occurs gradually and as a result, it is often family and friends who are the first to notice the problem. Things are not nearly as easy with a hearing loss. It is difficult to converse in a crowded room or over the phone. It is not that things are not always loud enough, but that they are not clear enough. People often claim that there would not be a problem if others would just stop

20 | Wymondham & Dereham

mumbling. Sounds fade so gradually that they can disappear unnoticed, for example when the birds stop chirping. Hearing loss affects one in six of us in the UK and when you do the math this equates to over 264,000 people here in Suffolk and Norfolk! This is a worrying statistic, which is only set to rise with a recent repor t suggesting the figure will be one in five by 2035. Unfor tunately too many people simply ignore their hearing loss and do nothing and for those that choose to do something, it can take them up to ten years to make that decision. Left untreated, hearing loss can affect relationships between the person affected and their family and friends, quietly eroding their quality of life. That is why it is impor tant to motivate your loved one to get their hearing tested and to take the

necessary action, and to learn how you can help with any communication diffculties. May marks the return of Deaf Awareness Week (15th-21st May) and is a special event designed to raise awareness about hearing loss and the suppor t that is available to help those affected. Organised by the UK Council of Deafness based locally in Colchester, the awareness week is a fine example of many organisations collaborating and working together in a joint campaign. At my company The Hearing Care Centre, we are getting involved by trying to break down the barriers that stop people seeking help. People worry that hearing aids are big and cumbersome and that their friends will know they are wearing one. Truth is though they couldn’t be more wrong. Hearing aids today are small, discreet, almost invisible when worn and are packed full with some amazing features.

www.DispatchMagazine.co.uk

Hearing aids alone however are not the whole solution and here in this region there are many organisations that organise hard of hearing clubs, lip reading classes, hearing aid maintenance clinics and assistive listening device. These organisation include; Sensing Change, Norfolk Deaf Association and Suffolk Hearing Advisor y Ser vice. So how do I convince my loved one to have their hearing checked I hear you ask? Talk to them about the things they are missing out on, such as social occasions or physical activities. Discuss the danger s of undiagnosed hearing loss—for instance, not being able to hear proper ly while driving, or the simple fact that leaving it untreated will only make it wor sen quicker. I would also recommend that you attend the hearing test appointment with them, as reassurance to them that they are not in this alone. By Karen Finch, Managing Director and lead audiologist at The Hearing Care Centre .The multi-award winning, familyr un company has 23 centres across Suffolk and Norfolk. If you need any fur ther advice or guidance I would be delighted to hear from you. Do email me at karenfinch@hearingcarecentre .co.uk
