More New Guests Announced For Abbey Fest 2011 John Hessenthaler of OEP Live! Presents… LULU has just announced* a very special guest performing with her on stage on Friday, 22nd July 2011 - from The Bee Gees- Robin Gibb. Robin Gibb is best known as a member of the Bee Gees, co-founded with his twin brother Maurice, and elder brother Barry. The trio started their musical career in Australia and found major success when they returned to England. With record sales estimated in excess of 100 million, the Bee Gees became one of the most successful pop groups of all time. This is a very rare UK appearance indeed.

Girlband “Farming Babes” are confirmed to appear at Abbey Fest 2011 on Friday, 22nd July 2011. The x5 students entered the Tractor Factor music competition run by the Farmer’s Guardian and are down to the last 6. If they win, they will play at Glastonbury. “Farming Babes” admit that it was all a bit of fun and singing is not their forte. With their farming backgrounds, promoting farming and the countryside is the goal and their increasing popularity is already achieving this by putting a feminine twist on a male dominated occupation.

This really is a very rare opportunity to see two world class iconic acts on stage together which should not be missed.

“Farming Babes” will perform their hit, “Farmer Shop” which is a parody of 50 Cents’ smash hit “Candy Shop”. Take a listen.

Welcome to

WYMONDHAM Local Scouts Joined Partner Agencies And Police To Work Together To Tidy Up Their Community Twenty six members of the 1st Wymondham scouts gave up their Sunday morning to work alongside officers from the Wymondham Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) and South Norfolk Council to clear up the roundabout at the junction of Ayton Road/Browick Road for local residents to enjoy. The appearance of this roundabout was raised by local residents as an issue to be considered by the SNT at a previous South Norfolk Action Panel (SNAP) meeting. There were concerns it was overgrown and unsightly, and required attention for both visual and safety reasons. Sgt Jim Heath of Wymondham SNT said: said: “The purpose of carrying out the gardening work was to tidy up the area by weeding and planting new plants, and to encourage local youngsters to take pride in their neighbourhood.”

“It was a great way for the local scouts to give something back to their community, whilst also contributing to their Police Community Challenge Award for which they are all working to gain. I am pleased with what they did, and impressed at their hard work.” The team spent the morning digging and weeding the roundabout and surrounding area, and planting new flowers in the centre of the roundabout, creating a pleasant environment for those that live near it or drive by the roundabout. The planning of this project was completed by the scouts and

Wymondham SNT officers Sergeant Jim Heath and PC Sam Poole, and support was received by local people. Scout leader Tim Percival said: “The youngsters were fantastic to work with, and put a great deal of effort in, working hard to achieve the end result. It was great to see them working together and interacting with local people with a sense of community spirit.” Wymondham Garden Centre, based on Tuttles Lane, kindly supplied all of the plants at cost price for the youngsters to use in this project, and the scouts

brought their own tools for the work. Local DJ’s from CDS Sounds and N-Joy Sounds donated £100 to help fund this project. Toucan Tool Hire kindly provided the safety barriers free of charge to make the area safe for those working. or know the local area at all, as they are almost in Suffolk, produce YOUR Town Guide. This company claims to be “Your Local Magazine”, but to be frank, they’re about as local as linguini!

You also know it’s one of the most effective ways of communicating your club, organisation or business information to as many local people as possible. We’re local people running a local business, just down the road from Wymondham, producing a truly local magazine, for local Wymondham people. As well as Dispatch Magazine and Wymondham Online (www.wymondhamonline.co.uk), for more than five years now, we’ve been publishing “The Official Wymondham Town Guide”. We know how effective it’s been because we keep seeing the same businesses advertising in it again and again every year. In fact, you could say we know exactly who’s who in Wymondham, and we let the locals know as well. However, this year, your Town Council have decided to appoint a new company, who have never worked in Wymondham,

Quite why your Town Council does not uphold ‘Keeping Business in the Community’, and support a local company who is better placed to bring real benefits to the people of Wymondham, is beyond us, as this other company doesn’t know Wymondham at all, or the locals, quite the way we do. So this year, at the request of many local businesses and residents in Wymondham, we’ll continue to publish the “The Original Wymondham Town Guide” again. And here’s your chance to not only get your name in front of more local people than ever before, but to do your business with a truly “local” business, at a really “local” price! As we already operate in Wymondham, we already have 99.9% of the correct information we need, relating to Clubs, Organisations and Businesses. However, to ensure we do have your right information, please make sure the details in the last Town Guide, which we published, are correct, and contact us if they need changing.

Wymondham Choral Society Wymondham Choral Society will be presenting their Summer Concert in Wymondham Abbey on Saturday 9th July, starting at 7.30pm. Under the baton of their Musical Director Claire Dixon, they will be performing Puccini’s “Messa di Gloria” in the first half, whilst after the interval a more mixed programme will include solo items from three talented local singers Billie Robson (Soprano), William Falconer (Tenor), and Mark Horner (Bass-Baritone), a piano duet featuring

accompanist Tom Primrose and William Falconer, this time as pianist, to complement the main work, Tippett’s “Five Spirituals” from the choir. Tickets priced at £10 (£5 under-16s) are available in advance from Reeves in Wymondham, or Prelude Records in Norwich, or on the door.

The Spirit Of Breckland Comes To Norwich Following on from the success of their summer exhibition at St. Margaret’s Church of Art last July, the Breckland Artists return with another exciting and vibrant two-week exhibition in July 2011. This year, Breckland Artists, a diverse group of 15 professional and exhibiting artists which includes painters, potters, sculptors and textile artists, delivers a new show that draws upon the spirit of Breckland. Breckland Artists are a diverse group, living and working in the south west of the county, who originally got together following participation in the Norfolk Open Studios scheme nearly a decade ago. The group’s longevity and appeal owes much to the diversity of subject matter and the range of techniques employed. This summer Breckland Artists are returning to St Margaret’s Church of Art for the fifth year and will be celebrating their tenth anniversary in 2012. Roger Gamble, Chairman and one of the founder members said, “Breckland is a special place for many of us, influencing our work, and I am sure that those who visit our exhibitions take away something of the spirit of place that is present in the art we create.” He continues, “Members have been included in, and won awards in, major national and regional exhibitions and we continue to deliver a vibrant body of work.” The work produced by three of the group’s new members underlines the influence of the Breckland landscape on their art. Milly Welby, a sculptor, illustrates the strong connection between her work, its sense of place and the act of artistic creation. “My work stems from a core belief that there is

Dispatch July 2011

beauty in everything and that through our senses we can discover this truth. To work in stone outside in the elements allows me to experience this belief first hand. To hear the sound of the chisel on stone, to feel the shape emerging and the textures change under my hands, to smell the dust in the air and the orange oil of mason’s polish in the final preparation, and finally to stand back and see what is emerging from the stone and my imagination.” For Malcolm Jarvis it is the clarity of the Breckland light that provides his motivation. Working in pastels, Malcolm utilises the nature of Breckland as his starting point, distilling the essence of the scene to produce his finished piece. Helen du Feu, a painter, uses patterns found in nature to create abstract or semi-abstract work in vibrant acrylic. “In my work I try to invoke the spirit of a place, both imagined and remembered, rather than the place itself. I like to think of my paintings as landscapes of the heart.” The Breckland Artists’ show will be held in the fine space of St. Margaret’s Church of Art, located in St. Benedict’s, Norwich. Staffed by the artists themselves, the show runs from Monday 18th July through to Saturday 30th July, 10am to 5pm, daily except Sundays. www.brecklandartists.com

dereham Innovation Generates £2 Million For Council Despite the economic downturn a forward thinking district authority is continuing to invest in property and is seeing a £2 million return each year. He said: “At Breckland we have for many years believed in running the council as a business. The private sector has responded to the current economic conditions through greater efficiency and revised business processes and we are responding in the same way.” Breckland Council, in Norfolk, is proud to boast the lowest district council tax in the country, an achievement which Leader William Nunn puts down in part to its focus on asset management.

“The private sector is increasingly recognising and promoting property as a strategic resource to meet organisational objectives.

The council’s portfolio includes 200 individual properties and 5,000 pieces of land and they are managing to maintain high levels of occupancy of around 95pc.

Whilst this is generally seen as a new phenomenon in the public sector Breckland Council has been leading this field for several years.” A Golf and Leisure Hotel complex and 25,000 sq ft of retail

space make up part of the councils existing portfolio. So what of the future? This year they are in negotiations to acquire a set of 12 industrial units in Thetford and looking into offering Finders Fee proposals and Agency agreements for other landlords in the area.

from property investments than cash deposits and reduce our dependency on council tax. This means we must optimise the assets to their best use and ensure the commercial property portfolio continues to provide the income needed to support the council’s aim of providing quality services at least cost.”

Mr Nunn continued: “If we are the best at what we do, and I would argue our success bears this out, then why should we not help others achieve similar success? “Breckland will continue to be innovative and entrepreneurial in the face of a challenging financial climate. “We want to generate a greater return

Fly A Flag For Our Armed Forces On Monday 20th June Breckland joined hundreds of councils, businesses and schools when Rowland Hall, of the Dereham and District Branch of the Royal British Legion, raised a flag outside the council offices in Dereham to demonstrate the Council’s support for Britain’s armed forces. Breckland Council Chairman Nigel Wilkin said; “The defence of our country is vital to every one of us and we are raising this flag today to demonstrate our appreciation for all the members of our armed forces - both past and serving.

The event is now in its third year and has met with great enthusiasm; in 2010 over 4,000 flags were flown across the land.

For their bravery, for the huge responsibility they bear and for their professionalism and steadfast sense of duty”.

Breckland Council has strong links with locally based forces and the ceremony was attended by Wing Commander Henry from RAF Marham and Captain Lenny Newcombe of the Light Dragoons. Rowland Hall represented the Royal British Legion.

The specially designed Armed Forces Day flags, based on the Union Jack, were flown across the United Kingdom, Channel Islands and Isle of Man in the week leading up to Armed Forces Day on 25th June.

Breckland Council Executive Members, senior management and ex-forces elected members and staff, including Chief Executive Terry Huggins and Council Chairman Nigel Wilkin, were also present.

Green And Common By W F Smith and Co Consultant Roger Sharp. cutting turf, to fish, to remove wood or digging for minerals. Not all commons are subject to the same rights. These are legal rights in land similar to easements.

Above: Roger Sharp There is much concern these days about the loss of playing fields and open spaces for recreation; mainly it seems, to development. We hear about Common Land and Village Greens and most people see them as areas where the general public have automatic rights of access. In law the two are quite separate and different rules apply. The concept of common land is very old and dates back centuries to a time when the country was mainly agricultural. Common land is where people, commoners, have rights, together, to enjoy in some particular way, land owned by another, such as pasturing animals,

County councils hold registers of common land showing the extent of the common and the rights. The register identifies the owner but is not conclusive of ownership. The Land Registry or title deeds (if unregistered) confirm ownership. The registers are open to public inspection. It is unlawful to build on common land or put up fences or walls. The general public do have a general right of access to registered commons under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act.

Act 2006 anyone can apply to have some land registered as a village green if a significant number of local people have, without asking permission of anyone, used it for some legitimate pastime for twenty years or more and that use continues up to the time the application is made. The dramatic effect of this law was shown recently in a case where a local authority wished to dispose of some land for development. Previously the authority had let the land to a golf club. Some locals applied for the land to be a village green on the basis that people in the area had habitually walked their dogs there without getting permission from the

club. When these people met golfers, the golfers were given priority. The court held that there was sufficient local use as of right and allowed the registration. That put an end to the intended development. The Act is potentially a powerful weapon for locals who have used vacant land for a long time for purposes as basic as walking a dog. For landowners who own vacant land and see development potential and who have allowed locals on to the land may find they are unable to sell until it is clear no Village Green claims are going to be made and that might take at least a couple of years after the land has been securely fenced off and any further local use halted.

A Village Green is an area specifically for the people of a locality to use for lawful games, sports and pastimes. The public access rights here are paramount. Local people can claim that some piece of land should be classed as a village green and therefore prevent building on it. Any encroachment on a village green is a criminal offence. Under the Commons

Growing Your Business And How Dispatch Magazine Can Help! We’re all after new business, or at the very least we’re trying to retain the customers we already have. During a recession we all look at how we can cut costs, reduce overheads, tighten our belts and increase revenue, and very often the first thing we cut is our advertising and marketing budget. Whilst we sit back and think great, we have saved some money, over a period of time work begins to dry up, customers disappear and we start looking at how we can cut costs again.

business grows and we have many methods in which we can help you. These include magazine advertising, internet awareness, business networking, e-newsletter campaigns, social media marketing and website presence which really do work.

Those companies who increase their advertising and marketing budget during recession are proven to be far better off. By the very nature that they are still advertising their business and shouting about what they do, means they will be at the forefront of people’s minds, when the other companies withdraw from being in the public eye. It is a typical case of “A business that does not advertise is an invisible business”!

According to a recent survey conducted by Regus, a provider of business services, an increasing number of businesses are turning to sites like Twitter and Facebook to drum up new customs. In 2010, 33% of companies were successfully winning new customers through social networking activity. A year later the amount has risen to 41%. More and more companies are leveraging the channel not only to increase the loyalty of existing customers, but as a successful acquisition tool.

In the UK one in three social network users are a fan, follower or friend of a company page or profile. A third of UK companies devote up to 20 per cent of their marketing budget to business social networking activity.

Summer Bedding Summer bedding plants are a great way of filling your garden with lots of long lasting colour. There are so many bedding plants available, here are a couple of my favourites. Geraniums - they will flower right up until the first frosts of the year and are available in a huge range of colours and sizes. They are real sun lovers and are quite drought tolerant, they are ideal for that very ‘hot spot’ in your garden. There is a trailing geranium that is fantastic in hanging baskets, again giving lots of colour over a long period. Fuchsias are small shrubs that also have a really long flowering period, again up until the first frosts. They flower prolifically and don’t need dead heading. They like the sun but are equally happy in dappled shade. The list of Fuchsias is endless, there are hundreds of varieties to choose from. There are upright bush types, trailing (great for tubs and baskets) and there are hardy varieties that survive through our winters. There is even a climbing fuchsia (Mrs. Boothby). Trailing plants are not just for baskets and tubs, if you plants them in your

flower beds they will spread along the ground giving excellent ground cover with lots of colour. Here at Wymondham Garden Centre we have lots of bedding and trailing plants, we have baskets and tubs made up bursting with colour, we also have baskets with strawberries and cherry tomatoes in. If you want your own baskets filling then bring them into us and we’ll fill them. We don’t charge for making them, only for what goes into them. Come and see us if you need any advice, we are always happy to help. Fingers crossed for a good summer and happy gardening to you all. Brenda.

Garden patios and decking have never been more popular. Homes & Gardens Home Decorating Ideas Not all home decorating ideas require a heavy investment of time and money. If you’re looking for a few affordable home interior decorating ideas to freshen up a room over a weekend, try these tips. Rearrange The Furniture Pull your furniture away from the walls. Try positioning it at intriguing angles. For example, a sofa arranged diagonally across a narrow living room will make the room look wider. Paint A Wall Paint one wall your favourite colour and make it the focal point. Hang interesting art on that wall and move a nice piece of furniture there.

24 Dispatch July 2011

(Note: Make sure that the colour is one that is shared with several other objects and fabrics in the room.)

Hang Pictures or Mirror Hang pictures that reflect your personality.

Bring In Plants Greenery always adds a breath of fresh air to a room.

Try frames that are more ornate.

If you don’t have a green thumb, try silk plants and trees. The quality has gotten so good that its hard to distinguish them from the real thing. Lay An Area Rug An area rug is a wonderful way of defining a conversation area. Try one that complements the room. Lay it at an angle beneath your coffee table.

When hanging a mirror, try and position it so that it reflects and nice view or an interesting architectural element. Add Decorative Pillows The good news about decorative pillows is that they are an easy way to add textures and patterns to a room. Still better, they can be changed to jazz up a sofa or chair before your room is ready for a major makeover. Replace Lamps Lamps are probably the one thing in

your home that will give others a clue that your room is outdated. Seek out new and fresh lamps that make a statement. Add A Throw Similar to decorative pillows, throws add texture to your furniture. They come in all kinds of natural and man made fabrics. Find a pattern and style that you like.

Apart from hundreds of old favourites and obscure rarities, there are motorcycles, bygones, trade stands, main arena entertainments, plenty for the kids to do and a great choice of tastes at the bar, food and refreshment stands. Special attractions this year are the ever-popular Robot Wars Road Show with pay-to-drive

mini-bots and a special appearance from ‘Major Damage’, the fearsome Robot Wars house robot weighing in at over 1000kg. For admirers of the fleet of foot there will be dancing live from the Swing Jive Dance Club, which always gets the lad’s feet tapping and the girl’s hips swaying, inspired by the sights and sounds of the Swing & Boogle Woogie tunes. You can take part in voting for your ‘Car of the Show’. The winning entry will win PRIZE VOUCHERS for a special motoring event!

A typical Zumba session lasts about an hour and incorporates several dance styles, including cumbia, merengue, salsa, reggaeton, mambo, rumba, flamenco, calypso and bhangra. An interview with...

Darren of Salon FX Attleborough available are really amazing. The Indigo range of products I use are new and are exciting to work with for all styles. I have been influenced by quite a few people over the years, Lee Stafford, Trevor Sorbie and Kevin and John from Genesis Hair By Design, where I trained.

Above: Darren of Salon FX Attleborough. 1. Where were you born and how old are you? I was born in Cambridge and I’m 43 years old. 2. Did you know what you wanted to do when you left school? Not really. I was sixteen in 1984 and saw a job for a trainee hairdresser with a big salon in North Norfolk, Genesis Hair By Design. The owners were Vidal Sassoon trained Kevin Player and John Blaire. During the three years I worked with them, they gave me a thorough grounding in hair cutting/colouring. 3. After your training, where did you go next? As a junior stylist I moved on to Cambridge to work at the John Cornell Salon. After progressing to senior stylist I moved to Norwich working at Transformer in the Arcade, and then my first taste of management was for Pride Haircutters. I then went on to open my first business Darren Paul Haircutters in Upper St Giles Street, Norwich. Following that I was a freelance hairstylist appearing on stages across the UK, prior to opening Salon FX in Attleborough. 4. How has hairdressing changed over the last few years and who are you influenced by? When I started hair was all about perming, where as these days cutting and colour are very much at the forefront of the industry. Good communication between hairdresser and client will give the right result every time. These days the techniques, products and colours

5. Do you feel you can cater for all ages and styles? Yes, ladies and gents of all ages. My long opening hours reflect the fact that I can fit in with most peoples requirements. 6. You have been established over 6 years now, what changes have you made? During this time I have tried to adapt to the needs of my clients offering them the services they need. 7. Having you hair done is always going to do that. I am pleased to say I am still nice and steady.

on most topics connect with my field. Email me with your questions: azzad@me.com

14. Have you anything to add? Thank you to all my clients for their continued support and I look forward to welcoming regular as well as new clients in to the salon.

12. I understand you work very closely with local Attleborough photographer Andrew Roebuck, what is the idea behind this? The idea is that anyone who is interested in fashion, would like a more stylish individual look or family portrait can experience being made over and photographed by a professional stylist and photographer. 13. What individual skills do you both have which will help with the success of your joint venture? We are both highly creative individuals with an eye for perfection. Looking for people who want to bring the best out in themselves.

8. What plans have you for the future? To continue to offer a high level and professional service to my clients old and new. 9. Do you have any hobbies? Photography and running. 10. You have performed your hair cutting techniques on stage at shows around the country, what do you enjoy most about doing these demonstrations? The challenge mainly. Whenever I do these shows there is very little time to practise, so I am thinking a lot of the time on my feet. I also like the fact that I have to bring a lot of my own creative ideas to the stage, working alongside other top professionals within my field. 11. You have kindly agreed to do a question and answer column on a monthly basis in the Dispatch Magazine commencing August 2011, tell us what you plan to provide for our readers? 27 years experience in the hair dressing industry, including studio, stage, photography and magazine work. I feel I can answer a cross section of questions

New Insurance Legislation New rules for vehicle insurance came into force from 20th June 2011. This will mean from then it will be an offence to keep an uninsured vehicle, rather than merely to drive when uninsured. If it appears that a vehicle has no insurance or SORN, an Insurance Advisory Letter (IAL) will be sent to the registered keeper advising them what they need to do. If the reminder is ignored, authorities can issue a £100 fine; have the vehicle clamped, seized and destroyed; or even force a court prosecution that can lead

to fines of up to £1,000. It will mean car owners can no longer allow the insurance on their vehicle to expire without taking action, even if the vehicle has had its tyres removed and is in a garage. They must now insure their vehicle or make a SORN declaration – for which there is no charge. It is estimated that around 1.4m UK motorists drive uninsured. These drivers cost the UK about £500m a year – adding an extra

£30 a car to each insurance policy. The police currently seize about 500 uninsured vehicles every day. It is also estimated that uninsured and untraced drivers kill 160 people and injured 23,000 in the UK every year. For more information please visit www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring
