Our Festival provides a wide range of music experiences, which promote fine Norfolk musicians, along with our many local music societies and musicians. We also showcase our historic market town and look forward to welcoming music fans of all ages and tastes to this beautiful part of Norfolk.” Wymondham Music Festival (reg. charity no. 1081375) is run by a committee of volunteers who give their time to organise and administer the programme, and is supported by grants, advertising, sponsorship and the generosity of its

The Festival committee links up with many other local music organisations to promote events throughout the summer months.

A Brand New Summerhouse For Star Throwers! Star Throwers is a not for profit registered charity dedicated to supporting and advising people and their families affected by cancer. Part of the unique ethos of Star Throwers is that the centre is only run by unpaid volunteers, whether their role is clinical, administrative or therapeutic.
Based in Wymondham, the centre is set within a peaceful garden where a wide range of treatments and services are available. A new summerhouse has recently been very kindly donated and erected by Steve Hayes, and lots of hard work was also undertaken for the foundations by our volunteer David Dore. It is absolutely fantastic and will be a much used addition to our facilities, enabling visitors to enjoy the lovely garden in all weathers. We are most grateful to all those who helped with this gift.
As demand for our centre increases, we are currently looking for more volunteers to join us. There are a variety of opportunities including reception duties, fund raising and events organising, gardening and DIY. We are also in need of people with current healthcare experience including trainee or retired nurses and doctors. If you would like to find out more and can offer just three hours per week, please telephone or email us to arrange an informal chat. We look forward to hearing from you. Dying To Meet You! You deserve to die well – that was the message sent to Wymondham people from organisers of a series of taboo-busting workshops held during National Dying Awareness Week. “The aim of the roadshows was simply to make it easier for people to talk about death and dying. It’s not tempting fate to make plans and discuss your wishes with loved ones – it’s more about considering the inevitability and getting on with life.”
Above: Marion Baynton from Rosedale Funeral Homes. Rosedale Funeral Home hosted three free workshops, to mark Dying Matters Awareness Week providing free advice and guidance on issues surrounding death and dying. “In the next 12 months around 350 people in the Wymondham area will die and based on national statistics less than a third of those will have spoken about the sort of death and funeral they’d like,” explained Rosedale Funeral Arranger, Marion Baynton.
As well as being able to talk to staff from Rosedale, visitors were also able to pick up free fact sheets, checklists and information booklets, all designed to demystify death and help people make informed choices. A range of resources were developed such as ‘Funeral Party Planning Guidance’, and ‘To Do Lists To Help You Put Your House In Order’ which tackle subjects that many find difficult, such as Making a Will and Lasting Power of Attorney, making a funeral plan, planning for your future care and support and signing up as an organ donor. These resources were available during the week, and Rosedale was giving away complimentary copies of their very special book entitled “When We Remember”. This book provides an honest and sensitive guide to those planning a funeral and offers many
gentle suggestions of poetry, readings and music, as well as advice for those trying to compose a tribute to be read at a funeral service. 80% of funerals in the UK are cremations, at an average cost of £2,546, yet 82% of people do not have a pre-paid funeral plan and 46% have not made any financial provision for their own death. More than 50% of all adults in the UK have not made a Will. “None of us want to think about getting ill and dying, but equally, none of us want to make things difficult for our loved ones either, so it’s important for their sake, not to delay making significant arrangements like care, wills and funeral plans until it’s too late.” For more information about Dying Awareness Week visit www.dyingmatters.org or contact Marion Baynton at Rosedale Funeral Home. www.rosedalefuneralhome.co.uk

Food Review For Robert Kett By Stephanie Lees. to date décor, with a natural yet inviting division between the eating and drinking areas. We were greeted by the friendly landladies, mother and daughter Debby and Charlotte Casey. We were shown to a table and explained about the Chefs Special boards that are changed every other day. The thought of cooking dinner on a week day evening is always a chore, so to go for a meal that you don’t have to cook is a delightful alternative. This was the decision Lucy and I came to and decided to try the Robert Kett in the Market Town of Wymondham. It is located on the popular residential area of Lime Tree Avenue, near to the local shops and other amenities. With adequate parking at the Pub or opposite at the shops we were able to get a space and walk to the recently refurbished and inviting pub, in seconds. We arrived about half past 6, surprised to find that they serve meals from as early as 5.30pm til 9pm everyday except Mondays when they close. Once inside the deceptively large building, we instantly noticed the clean fresh up
We perused the menu, which pleasantly surprised with its choice of homemade dishes, chutneys and desserts along with a nice selection of vegetarian options. Although a meat lover, some vegetarian options can be very appealing and a refreshing change. In an attempt to guarantee leaving space for a homemade pudding we opted to skip on a starter and ordered our main meal. This in hindsight was a shrewd choice as the portions were hearty and well presented! I chose a good traditional dish, Steak and Ale Pie with a puff pastry crust with hand cut chips and vegetables. This was delicious with the large veg selection including braised baby leeks, Swede mash, broccoli and carrots served in a separate dish. The steak was tender and
piping hot with plenty of beefy ale gravy to dip the hand cut chips in… always a must! Lucy chose off the specials board, Homemade Smoked Salmon and Cod Fishcakes with the choice of jacket potato or chips, a tossed salad and crusty bread roll. Again, well presented and plenty to tuck into. The fishcakes were flavoursome and generous in both smoked salmon and cod, the salad was crisp and fresh and complimented the dish excellently. To be honest the crusty bread wasn’t necessary as there was plenty to keep you occupied without it. We had a break between, Debby and Charlotte were friendly and attentive but at no point did we feel rushed to order or leave. Offering a small but carefully selected choice of desserts, picking a pud to finish off the meal did not prove tricky… I opted for homemade Mixed Berry Pavlova, which was lovely with sharp berries complimenting the chewy, gooey meringue, just as homemade meringue should be. Lucy decided to be a little less greedy than me and chose the Homemade Honeycomb Ice Cream which perfectly finished her meal.
In my opinion a meal out should offer you a choice of dishes you wouldn’t necessarily have all the time at home and The Robert Kett certainly offers this in a pleasant, relaxed and clean environment. The pub is family friendly, without being over run, provides monthly promotions on drinks, a Sunday Carvery every week and an all you eat Oriental Buffet on the first Monday of every month. We both enjoyed our evening out at The Robert Kett and look forward to visiting again. To reserve a table and avoid disappointment please call 01953 602957.

The Original Wymondham The Green Dragon Inn Town Guide 2011 - 2012 Thank you to every body who attended our beer festival and a big thanks to the following musicians:
As a Dispatch Magazine reader / advertiser, you know it’s Wymondham’s favourite, free local magazine. or know the local area at all, as they are almost in Suffolk, produce YOUR Town Guide. This company claims to be “Your Local Magazine”, but to be frank, they’re about as local as linguini!
You also know it’s one of the most effective ways of communicating your club, organisation or business information to as many local people as possible. We’re local people running a local business, just down the road from Wymondham, producing a truly local magazine, for local Wymondham people. As well as Dispatch Magazine and Wymondham Online (www.wymondhamonline.co.uk), for more than five years now, we’ve been publishing “The Official Wymondham Town Guide”. We know how effective it’s been because we keep seeing the same businesses advertising in it again and again every year. In fact, you could say we know exactly who’s who in Wymondham, and we let the locals know as well. However, this year, your Town Council have decided to appoint a new company, who have never worked in Wymondham,
10 Dispatch June 2011
Quite why your Town Council does not uphold ‘Keeping Business in the Community’, and support a local company who is better placed to bring real benefits to the people of Wymondham, is beyond us, as this other company doesn’t know Wymondham at all, or the locals, quite the way we do. So this year, at the request of many local businesses and residents in Wymondham, we’ll continue to publish the “The Original Wymondham Town Guide” again. And here’s your chance to not only get your name in front of more local people than ever before, but to do your business with a truly “local” business, at a really “local” price! As we already operate in Wymondham, we already have 99.9% of the correct information we need, relating to Clubs, Organisations and Businesses. However, to ensure we do have your right information, please make sure the details in the last Town Guide, which we published, are correct, and contact us if they need changing. Do you have a view regarding your Town Council? If so Tweet us: @Dispatch_Mag and start your message with #WTC. We look forward to working with you again, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch 01953 456789.
Pennyless on the Friday An uplifting band – fiddle playing husband and wife duo. Nina Baker on the Saturday Her inspirational song writing, blended with her smooth piano and dulcet tones provided a listening experience like no other. This was Nina’s last solo gig, good luck Nina with your band! James Summerhill on the Sunday An extremely talented young Wymondham guitarist, with a huge range of songs spanning over 50 years. James has an amazing voice; he is certainly one to watch out for!
Tallis on the Monday A local 4 piece folk band, who kept peoples toes tapping for hours, this was their first gig at The Green Dragon, but we look forward to welcoming them back in the near future. Also a big thank you to all who attended the Vicar Street and Church Street Royal Wedding Party, we hope you all had a great time and enjoyed our BBQ! And finally, come and see our newly decked area in our beer garden this summer, this has provided us with extra space and we welcome your feedback.

dereham Funding Available For Breckland Litter Wardens Countryside campaigners CPRE Norfolk have teamed up with Breckland Council to establish a network of litter wardens in local areas, helping to keep the Breckland countryside free from litter. 33 litter wardens have already been appointed in towns and villages across Norfolk including those in Dereham and Thetford. A new partnership with Breckland Council means that many more can now be appointed. The wardens receive a full set of litter picking equipment (litter picker, safety gloves, high visibility vest and bags) and £100 is paid to their parish or town council to contribute to the warden’s expenses or to other litter-related activities. The litter warden must be willing to undertake a regular litter pick, keep records and act as a point of enquiry on litter related issues in the local community. Cllr Lynda Turner, Portfolio Holder for
Environment at Breckland Council, says of the partnership, “We are delighted to team up with CPRE to help ensure that our villages and towns become even cleaner and greener. Through our Pride in Breckland campaign, many volunteers are already coming forward to do their bit in Breckland, and this partnership builds on the outstanding work our communities are doing.” James Frost, Director of CPRE Norfolk, says, “I am delighted to have secured this funding to help groups keep towns and villages in Breckland clean. Before Summer comes and the vegetation fully grows back, this is a good time to start regular litter picks. “I know that many parish councils, town
councils and resident associations across the county already employ a litter warden to keep their paths, village greens and countryside clean. However, we want to encourage other groups to join in and play their part.

“CPRE is working hard with our President Bill Bryson to raise awareness of the litterbugs, suggest practical solutions such as bottle deposit schemes and press local councils to penalise offenders. However, it is clear that the problem of litter is not going to be solved without an enormous effort to clean it up. Establishing a litter warden is one way to get started”, James concluded. Is Your Will Worth The Paper It Is Written On? Testamentary freedom is the right we all have to say, in our Wills, what we want to happen to our property when we die, as long as we are fully aware of what we are saying and our wishes are freely stated. A couple of recent cases have thrown some light on how Courts may look at a Will where a non-dependent adult child has been written out. In the first a lady owned a farm worth some £2.5 million and gave it all away to the RSPCA disinheriting her only daughter who had, during her mother’s lifetime, spent time and money looking after her, working on the farm and receiving assurances that she would get the farm. The court found that the mother had made her Will without properly knowing or understanding what it contained. Because of that finding the mother’s Will was deemed invalid and the daughter, therefore, inherited the whole estate under intestacy laws. It seemed a crucial concern that there was no evidence to show why the mother would want to benefit the RSPCA over her only daughter. In the second case the testatrix left her estate to charities and nothing to her only daughter. The mother and daughter were estranged from each
other. The daughter knew that her mother had cut her out of her Will and had no expectancy (unlike the first case) of receiving anything. The issue, in this case, was not whether the Will was valid or not (it was) but whether the late mother had made reasonable financial provision in it for the daughter. The law does allow some people (like children) who might have expected to have received some provision but did not to make an application to the Court. The law is known as the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependents) Act.
daughter’s conduct was relevant when fixing the amount of any provision. The case therefore seems to reveal a focus on fairness from the claimant child’s point of view and thus a restricting of testamentary freedom. The two cases seem to reveal a lack of judicial sympathy towards charities when children are cut out in their favour. One may wonder whether the court in the second case would have taken the same view of the daughter’s claim if the beneficiaries under the Will had been other family members.
Although the cases were decided on entirely differently, in both the claims of non-dependent children who had been cut out of their parents’ Wills succeeded. If it is intended to make a Will in which a child is to be excluded from benefiting in any way it is crucial that it is prepared with great care, the fullest possible instructions given to the solicitor preparing it and, where parents are making Wills in similar form, each parent should be seen by a solicitor separately. It is a good idea still to leave a letter with a will setting out why someone is getting less than they might expect.
The Court said that the basic question to be asked was whether the Will produced an unreasonable result. The daughter was not in any way reliant upon her late mother financially and, in view of the estrangement, there was no moral obligation to make provision. From the mother’s point of view her decision to leave her daughter nothing was quite understandable. What seemed to have swayed the Court was the daughter’s straitened financial circumstances. The

You are meeting new people, selling yourself and your skills, and often getting the third degree about what you know or don’t know. Here are job interview tips to help prepare you to interview effectively. • Pick out what you are going to wear on your job interview - After you choose your outfit, make sure it is cleaned and pressed and you have the appropriate accessories and shoes to go with it. • Research as much about the company as you can. • Arrive early for the interview. Plan to arrive for your interview 10-15 minutes before the appointed time. Arriving too early confuses the employer and creates an awkward situation. By the same token, arriving late creates a bad first impression.
• Have a good firm handshake. • Wait until you are offered a chair before you sit down. • Speak clearly and enthusiastically about your experiences and skills. Be professional, but don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through. Be yourself. • Remain interested and alert throughout the interview. • Be enthusiastic and show it in your replies and body language. • Stress your achievements. • Have questions of your own to ask the interviewer. • Follow up the interview with a thank-you letter. Employers regard this gesture as evidence of your attention to detail, as well as an indication of your interest in the position.

Ysobel, Jade & Dionne of S&M Personnel Three years on its going from strength to strength and we have employed Jade to oversee and build this division further.
Above: Ysobel, Jade, & Dionne of S&M Personnel. So, Please, tell us a little about yourselves? Ysobel: I was employed by S&M Personnel Ltd in June 2008 and was given the opportunity to manage our office in Watton just 10 months ago. I have had a varied career path over the years from general office through to sales, insurance and temporary contracts which have lead me in to recruitment industry with S&M Personnel Ltd. Having previously undertaken temporary work myself for nearly two years I feel my previous experience gives us an advantage when dealing with candidates new to the recruitment process, as I can relate to my own experience. Since working for S&M Personnel myself and my colleague Dionne have achieved qualifications in the Certificate of Recruitment Practice whilst continually growing our divisions and upholding our strong rapport with our Clients and candidates. I now oversee and manage the running of all of our divisions and have built up a strong team to which we are currently looking to expand, if you are looking for a change or would like to know more about working with us please contact me on ysobel@smpersonnel.com.
Dionne: I live locally and have worked for S&M Personnel Ltd for 3 years. Previous to this I worked for an estate agency in Dereham so I know the local area quite well. I feel that estate agency set me in good stead for Recruitment as it’s all about dealing with people & building good relationships. I was originally employed by S&M Personnel to launch the Industrial Division along with Ysobel. This took us about 6 months of permanent canvassing, approaching prospective clients and generally getting our name out there.
I am currently running the Driving Division providing all class drivers C&E, C, 7.5T and 3.5T for businesses in and around Norfolk and Suffolk. Jade: I am new to the recruitment industry having worked for S&M Personnel for nearly 8 months. I am originally from Felixstowe and I moved to Norwich 3 years ago. My career history has always been in sales from selling cars and mobile phones, through to gym membership, so joining the team at S&M Personnel seemed a natural progression and opportunity for me to progress and apply my strengths too. I feel I have an enthusiastic, fresh approach to my job and in my time at S&M Personnel I have built up a good knowledge of the local area along with the level of service our clients require by maintaining and building upon our strong relationships. I currently run and oversee the office and Industrial Divisions to which we are always seeking candidates for across the board.
Tell us a little bit about the S&M Personnel in general? S&M Personnel has been established since 2003. We have three main divisions: Driving, Industrial and Office. We moved to our offices in Watton 4 years ago and have a good presence on the high street. We currently employ an average of 100 candidates on a weekly basis across the 3 divisions.
”
We were very close last year and missed out marginally so watch this space... If Dispatch Magazine could grant you one wish each what would you wish for? Ysobel: More shoes!!! I love shoes!!! Dionne: - A large lottery win and continued sunshine all summer! Jade: Easy. Prince Harry!!
What would you like to see happening over the next few years? We are looking forward to growing our office in Watton, taking on more consultants & growing each division. We are hoping to supply an even larger coverage area and work more closely with our office in Loughton, Essex.
All: Of course, with regards to the company, we wish for lasting success and growth for the business and continued growing relationships with our clients and candidates.
We want to maintain and grow our client base and continue to provide a high class level of service and professionalism. This year we would love to pick up an award at the Norfolk Recruitment Awards.
I am currently seeking warehouse pickers, packers, production and general operatives through to office administrators if you are currently looking for work or a change in direction please send your C.V’s through to myself, jade@smpersonnel.com How does S&M Personnel differ to other Recruitment Agencies? We are an Independent Recruitment Agency. We pride ourselves on the service we provide to both our clients and candidates. We are not individually targeted or pressured and work genuinely and honestly because we care. We take time to understand all our client’s needs which in turn enables us to provide a first class service! We do our best to match suitable candidates to the work we have and have a very successful placement rate often having a candidate in work very soon after registration.

Feeling Lazy This Summer? And why not! It is not always necessary to punish yourself toiling under the hot summer sun to keep your garden looking its best. In fact, there are many opportunities to ensure your garden remains in tip-top condition throughout the year so you can spend time enjoying your ‘outdoor room’. Many techniques can be used to minimise the amount of work needed in the garden, such as retaining all planting beds, using lawn edging and applying a decorative surface on planting beds such as pebbles to retain moisture and add interest and texture. Similarly, by using hard-landscaping materials such as natural stone paving and hardwood sleepers that age gracefully over time adding their own distinct character to the garden, the heavy burden of responsibility is moved away from the plants that have traditionally been the central focal-point of the garden. The use of elegant, interesting and tactile materials within your garden adds a whole new dimension and contributes to the ease of upkeep without losing visual appeal. At Georgina Read Design & Landscaping we specialise in transforming gardens and our flexible approach means we can always meet your requirements for all aspects of landscaping. As we are also the driving force behind Paving Superstore (www.pavingsuperstore.co.uk) and

Felling By Joan Garnham, Waveney Tree Specialists.
Above: Alan Garnham being presented with his trophy by Andy Cambell. At the East Anglian Game and Country Fair in Norwich in early April was the East of England Tree Climbing and Felling Championships. This competition tests the skill and speed of the areas best tree surgeons. Alan Garnham of Waveney Tree Specialists once again is the East of England Tree Felling Champion. The first weekend in May saw both him and his son, Kristian, competing in the UK Championships in Devon. Kristian is now the UK Champion for speed changing the bar and chain on a chain saw, he did this in a mind boggling 13.74 seconds. To fell or not to fell, that is the question (apologies to Shakespeare!) Trees are plants like any other and no
matter how pretty the plant is, if it is in the wrong place we call them weeds. Trees are no different but because they have a greater impact on the environment there are laws regarding felling. This is quite right, if we felled indiscriminately the countryside would soon be denuded. Before making a decision it would be prudent to ask the advice of a recognised tree surgeon; this advice is usually freely given with no obligation attached. A good tree surgeon will be able to advise the best course of action. Whether the tree is diseased or threatening buildings or has overgrown the space. He will also find out if it is in a conservation area or has a Tree Preservation Order attached. Permission will be granted to work on the tree or remove it, depending on several factors. A good rule of thumb is to ask the question – is it dead, dying, diseased or dangerous? If none of these, but just too big for the garden, it is possible to reduce the tree to allow more light and to prevent overcrowding other trees. But beware; men with chainsaws can wreak havoc to a
beautiful tree. Just lopping the top off will encourage the tree to grow more quickly and the end result will be a lollipop even bigger than before. A good surgeon will keep the shape and bring it in to line with the rest of the garden. One of the biggest issues we deal with is ornamental trees that have grown too big and are stunting surrounding trees. Often the best policy is to remove it and plant another, this will give many more years of pleasure watching the new one mature and rejuvenate those around it. What about the stump? This is easily dealt with; most recognised firms have stump grinders. These literally chew the stump out without disturbing the surrounding ground and a new tree can be planted in the same place on the same day. We are fortunate to have a stump grinder that will remove a stump 3-4ft across in less than an hour. Expert advice is a phone call or e-mail away Tel: 01379 668 636 Mobile: 07990 801 388

TUITION Socatots® SOCATOTS® is the world’s first soccer specific physical play programme for children from six months to school age. Aimed at giving children their very first start with the ball. SOCATOTS® was developed by Simon Clifford and is a truly unique programme. SOCATOTS® uses soccer or football as our medium and of course a child attending SOCATOTS® will greatly develop their skills in this area, however SOCATOTS® is about a great deal more than just developing a child’s affinity and control with the ball, it is about giving them a well-rounded start in their physical, social and educational development and developing the ‘whole child’. Attending SOCATOTS® classes has enormous benefits for young children and their parents, some of which are listed below: • Improvement of balance and coordination, as well as posture • Development of cognitive skills
• Increased self confidence • Improved social skills • Enhanced muscle and bone development • More body awareness and understanding of the benefits of exercise The benefits of taking part in SOCATOTS® go far beyond just the physical and research shows that children who are physically active from a young age are more likely to concentrate better in the classroom. Add this to SOCATOTS® focus on educational and social development as well as physical and soccer specific skills and you can see that SOCATOTS® really does give a great start to children.
SOCATOTS® sessions feature full parental participation and the emphasis is always on fun and structured play and development throughout each of the 3 SOCATOTS® phases.

Choosing The Right Nursery / Playgroup 1. Make sure the nursery/playgroup is registered with Ofsted. The registration certificate should be displayed together with a current certificate of insurance. 2. You are entitled to see copies of the recent Ofsted report, showing the quality of education and care.
A professional approach 1. Half the staff must hold relevant childcare qualifications such as NVQ Childcare Level or equivalent. One staff member should have a First Aid certificate and all of the supervisors must have an NVQ Childcare Level 3 or equivalent. 2. How much is it and what’s included?
Happy, safe and clean 1. Is there a safe and clean outside play area? Is the interior bright, clean and welcoming? 2. What sort of meals are provided and at what time? Are special diets catered for? Are the menus varied? 3. Do the children look happy and occupied? Are staff interacting well? 4. Are the staff happy, relaxed, well presented, calm and confident?
30 Dispatch June 2011
3. How are your child’s activities and achievements recorded? Will your child have a key worker? Who is your main point of contact? 4. Ask about staff turnover - how long do members of staff stay and how often do they leave? Some children find a change of carer disruptive and unsettling. 5. Ask about diet, potty training, emergency procedures, discipline and other nursery policies.

• When inside, try to stay in the coolest parts of your home. Keep curtains and blinds closed in rooms that catch the sun. Remember that lights generate
• Drink lots of fluid – even if you’re not thirsty. Limit drinks with caffeine (like coffee and cola) and avoid alcohol as it can make dehydration worse.
• Eat normally but try to have more cold foods, particularly salads and fruit as they contain a lot of water.
