WYMONDHAM
Wymondham Through WYM OND HA M THR O U G H T H E A G E S A historic town ymondham‌ Just another Norfolk town, I think not. Wymondham is one of the largest parishes in Norfolk with an interesting historic relevance as the town has evolved over time. Transformed by both the good and bad, this wonderful town stands strong with its beautiful architecture and thriving street growing ever stronger. Wymondham was very influential in the medieval era as it was boosted by the success of wool trading. The merchants behind the trade then went on to use their wealth for grand and spectacular houses as well as structure such like the Market Cross building and the Wymondham Abbey Church giving Wymondham its rustic setting from the 17th Century. 04 | Wymondham & Dereham
Market Cross The market cross found in the market place of Wymondham has an long history despite its age. The current building houses the Tourist Information Centre, however, this building
was built in the early seventeenth century after the original building was destroyed. The original Market Cross was built sometime in the Middle Ages but was burnt down alongside many other buildings in the Great Fire of Wymondham that occurred in 1615. www.DispatchMagazine.co.uk
the Ages The Abbey One of Wymondham’s famous landmarks, the abbey, has been around since the early 1100s, Built by the townsfolk and the Benedictine Monks this architectural masterpiece had the purpose of serving both parties, however, this dual purpose has caused many arguments over the years between the two groups. This was later settled when the church gained independence and therefore becoming an Abbey. The Abbey has now been partly demolished by Henry VIII when he dissolve the abbey. This has left the domestic buildings and eastern end of the church in ruins while the remaining church still serves the purpose of a place of worship for the town.

Industry In the past, Wymondham has been a notable part of the Woodturning trade which later transformed into brush making up until the late 1900s. From weaving for Norwich, to the now nearby Lotus Cars at Hethel, this thriving market town has also been heavily involved with other local hubs to improve industrial progress over the years. However, the industrial side of this Norfolk Jewel has never died, merely change, now housing multiple separate businesses in its buzzing business park.
which has over time been called by many different names such as the “White Swan” and “St George and the Dragon” Kett’s Rebellion Kett’s Rebellion was a movement that started in Wymondham on 8th July 1549 with a group of rebels destroying fences that had been placed by local well-off landowners on common land. One of the revolts targets was the farmer Robert Kett who, instead of resisting, agreed with their cause and offered to lead them. Kett and his growing forces, joined by recruits from
Norwich and the surrounding are reaching numbers of around 16,000 strong. On July 12th they set up camp on Mousehold Heath to the northeast of Norwich. The rioters later stormed Norwich on July 29th and took the city. However, the rebellion ended on 27th August as the rebels were defeated by an army under the leadership of the Earl of Warwick at the Battle of Dussindale. Kett was then captured and held in the Tower of London before being tried for treason, and hanged from the walls of Norwich Castle on 7 December 1549.
The Lost Pubs In the mid-eighteenth century Wymondham had a recorded 39 alehouses to help entertain the residents of the town. In the 19th and 20th centuries pubs were of great importance as they often doubled as post offices and place to hosting a variety of entertainment functions. The most popular functions include sports matches and meetings, musicals, auctions and many other social events. However, over the years this number has declined to 6 remaining public houses such as the Green Dragon. This Late Middle Ages inn is the oldest in the town 06 | Wymondham & Dereham

WYMONDHAM S U MM ER ’S HER E ! And so are the country’s agricultural shows. Norfolk boy, Tony Cooper, takes a look at the Royal Norfolk - one of the finest! eld over 28th-29th June, the Royal Norfolk Show is the UK’s largest two-day county show. Established for over 150 years it regularly attracts crowds of 80,000 visitors. The show - a great celebration of Food, Farming and the Countryside - attracts some of the largest showings of livestock in the country and is a highly-regarded opportunity to qualify for a number of Horse of the Year Show classes. In addition, it is a platform for everything that is great about Norfolk. Routinely, the show includes well-established sectors covering local food and drink produce, education, innovation, horticulture, agricultural machinery, art, Norfolk landscape, crafts, health and well-being, cookery and the Armed Forces. Over 700 businesses regularly trade at the show and for 2017 the top-level themes are:
08 | Wymondham & Dereham
• Food, Farming and the Countryside • Innovation and Enterprise • Celebrating the Arts Today the Royal Norfolk Show has become the county’s major social event of the year, with families and friends gathering together to celebrate food, farming and the countryside. And incorporating all the traditional aspects of the show is the Food, Farming and Countryside Area. This is where showgoers can enjoy the equine and livestock championship classes as well as the much-loved Adnams Food and Drink Experience plus the rolling programme of events presented on the ‘Grow it, Cook it, Eat it’ stage - a new attraction last year which proved immensely popular. This year the stage will host Jimmy Doherty of Jimmy’s Farm in addition to many of Norfolk’s top chefs.
But new this year is the Forestry and Wood Village which will showcase a variety of skills and trades associated with the industry. And after its introduction last year The Broads Village is back and here visitors can discover all those organisations and people promoting and working in the Broads National Park. Showcasing the exciting and dynamic research and development underway in Norfolk is the Innovation Hub which gathers in one place the latest advances in agricultural science, technology and engineering emerging in the East of England. The presence of over 700 retailers and businesses promises to be a great demonstration of enterprise in the county. Another headline attraction is the ‘Choir of a Thousand’ featuring singers recruited from all parts of Norfolk performing a specially-commissioned
www.DispatchMagazine.co.uk
work under the baton of Mark De-Lisser of The Voice (BBC1). The words will have strong connections to Norfolk and its rural landscape while the work has been composed by Cheryl Frances-Hoad, a British composer who graduated from Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge, with a triple first in 2001. She began composing at the age of eight while studying cello and piano at the Yehudi Menuhin School. Since then she has won a host of prizes including the Purcell Composition Prize, the Bach Choir Carol Competition, the BBC Young Composers’ Workshop 1996, the Cambridge Composers’ Competition and the Birmingham Conservatoire Composition Competition. A new performance space within the newly-created Royal Square will widen the musical offering of the show and the new bandstand located within the Retail Area, accommodating performing groups of up to four people, will be widely used. Visual art is well represented, too, as the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts will have a presence at the show while the Show Art Gallery will offer a spectacle of colour and artistic talent. And in a ‘first’ for the show, the Paint Out movement will be seen in full action painting a variety of scenes. This year’s Retail Experience (a popular aspect of the show) sees over 700 businesses trading at Norfolk’s largest outdoor experience and showgoers will be able to browse and buy from an eclectic range of shops trading in everything from luxury goods and clothing to banking and cars. There’ll also be a range of agricultural suppliers on site many showing the latest state-of-the-art farming and agricultural equipment. Mark Nicholas, show director, says: ‘This year’s show will support food, farming and the countryside in Norfolk. Additionally, it will bring together people from across the county showing Norfolk at its best.’ He also added: ‘There’s so much on offer from exciting new foods to try, new Grand Ring attractions, a bigger and better music and arts experience and plenty of entertainment throughout the entire two days ranging from livestock and showjumping displays to cooking and fashion shows. www.DispatchMagazine.co.uk
‘I’m pleased to say that this year will see the introduction of a new partnership between the Royal Norfolk Show and Archant. The official show guide, for example, will be distributed in advance with the Eastern Daily Press keeping visitors updated on all things to do at the show while free copies will also be available at the event.’ And one of this year’s Grand Ring attractions is none other than the appearance of The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery celebrating the 70th anniversary year of their founding by King George VI. In a jaw-dropping display, showgoers will be able to witness the power and skill of over one hundred horses and soldiers perform one of the most famous equine displays one will probably ever see as they drive a team of six horses pulling six First World War ‘thirteen pounder’ state saluting guns. Stationed at Woolwich, The Troop is an integral part of the Household Troops Division and their duties include the firing of royal salutes in Hyde Park and Green Park on royal anniversaries and state occasions, providing a gun carriage and team of black horses for state and military funerals and performing the world-famous musical drive around the country and farther afield. The Troop also performs the duties of the Queen’s Life Guard at Horse Guards for one month each year and the men and women of The Troop are trained as fighting soldiers and, recently, served in Afghanistan while augmenting other units deployed overseas. ‘We’re absolutely thrilled to have The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery at this year’s show,’ exclaimed show director, Mark Nicholas. ‘This is an extremely proud moment for the county as it is their only appearance in the UK outside of London in their 70th anniversary year. Their unique display - which will be seen in the Grand Ring on both days of the show - offers a big treat for showgoers who will, I’m sure, not have seen anything like this before.’ Over the years, though, the Grand Ring has seen a host of top attractions which help to make (and keep) the Royal Norfolk Show one of the county’s major
social events of the year where families and friends gather together to celebrate the best of Norfolk from food to farming not forgetting, of course, the countryside. Without doubt, the Royal Norfolk Agricultural Association does a grand job while enjoying an illustrious history. It was in 1908 when it was granted the ‘royal’ prefix by King Edward VII. And in 1952, following over 70 years of holding the show at a range of locations throughout the county, the Association purchased land at Costessey to create a permanent showground. The Royal Norfolk, by the way, is one of only six royal shows held in the UK today and, indeed, one of the country’s largest agricultural shows. A great deal of investment has been devoted to enhancing and improving the Costessey site over the past few years. The latest development, for instance, is the completion of a £1.4 million investment in the Norfolk Showground Arena, making it one of the largest and most sophisticated event spaces in the region. And through the funds it generates, the RNAA annually supports its charitable aims through an extensive educational outreach programme and by making grants and donations to agricultural projects and related organisations around Norfolk. All of this investment, activity and thoughtfulness by the RNAA, under the direction of its chief executive, Greg Smith, helps to keep Norfolk and the Royal Norfolk Show moving in the right direction. Long may it continue! Online tickets for this year’s show are on sale now and advance tickets can only be bought from the Royal Norfolk Show website www.royalnorfolkshow.co.uk This year sees the introduction of a new two-day ticket for £30 (only available online), a saving of £20 if you were to buy two single adult tickets for each day. Advance purchase adult tickets cost £20, children (aged 5-16) £7 (under 5’s are free) and family (2 adults and 3 children aged 5-16) £45. A range of concessions are also available. Advance car parking costs £6 per vehicle. WYMONDHAM SO UND S LEEP How do you know if you need to replace your bed? or most of us a third of our life is spent asleep, meaning the wear on our mattress over time is considerable, yet a staggering 25% of people wouldn’t consider changing their mattress – even after more than 10 years. It is hardly surprising then that 58% of the population complain of waking feeling stiff and achy. How do you know if you need to replace your bed? • Is your bed more than 7 years old? • Is it uncomfortable? Or when you sleep in someone else’s bed, does that feel better than your own? • Do you wake in the morning with a painful back or stiff limbs? • Can you feel the springs beneath the surface of the mattress? • Do you and your partner roll together? • Is your mattress just generally warn and discoloured? If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, then it could be time to invest in a new bed! The key with mattress buying is to try out as wide a variety of options as possible to find the most suitable mattress for you (and your partner). Given the amount of time you spend in bed, it is important to spend a reasonable amount of time in store trying out new ones, especially if you have been experiencing pains that could come from your existing mattress. It this instance, it may be worth having a chat with your chiropractor for some advice on what they advise is suitable for your back. At Sound Sleep, we stock a variety of brands and different types of mattresses, for example pocket sprung, memory foam, latex and so on. Each manufacturer has different mattresses that offer different levels of support and comfort. When mattress shopping, it is essential to ask for help. We are highly trained 10 | Wymondham & Dereham
mattress specialists and are on hand to advise you, not to high pressure you in to buying something that may not be suitable. How do I know which one is right for me? A mattress that is supportive and comfortable is important, but remember, your requirement for support will differ depending on your weight and build. The best bed for your back is not always a firm one. You need a bed that will provide the right support and comfort for you. When laying on your side, ideally your spine should be parallel to the mattress and your spine should not sag down or bow up. Trying them out Give your self plenty of time and wear loose clothing, this helps you turn and get in and out of beds in store. Our Mattress Specialists will point you in the right direction. Try the advised mattresses for as long as possible to get a good ‘feel’ for them. Remember comfort is very subjective. Some people like the sensation of being cocooned in a bed; others prefer to lie on top of them. Back sleepers may like a firmer feel than those that like to sleep on their sides. There are lots of ‘feels’ in store, we are here to help you find what works best for you. If you sleep together, shop together Always shop with your partner, the bed must be suitable for both of you. As it is inevitable one of you may have to compromise! Size matters It is scientifically proven that couples sleep better in a bigger bed. The more space you have the freer you can move without disturbing your partner. This is also a good idea if one or both of you get hot in bed. You should be able to lie side by side, with your arms behind your head and your elbows out, without touching each other. Did you know that two people sharing a standard sized double bed only have as
much personal sleeping space as a baby in a cot? Check your base It is always advisable to purchase a new mattress and divan base together, but not essential. Our mattress specialists will ask questions about your existing base, most bedsteads in good condition will be suitable for a new mattress. However, old divan bases, especially those that are sprung will more than likely need replacing as they could cause harm to your new mattress, in turn affecting the level of support that the new mattress will provide and could also invalidate manufacturers’ warranties and guarantees. Look for the NBF Mark of Approval For added reassurance that the bed you are buying is safe, clean and honest (meaning it is what it says it is) then look for the Approved logo which can be found on all beds at Sound Sleep. All members of the trade association, the National Bed Federation (NBF) must be independently audited to ensure they follow the procedures that comply with flammability, health and hygiene and trade descriptions regulations. More info at www.bedfed.org.uk Now that you have chosen a new mattress, don’t forget that pillows are very important too. A cheap, unsupportive pillow can cause neck and back problems. These are just as important as your new mattress. For more help and advice, visit our in store Dream Team who can talk you through all the pros and cons of various mattresses. We also pride ourselves on having the most up to date mattress technology as well as the old fashioned technology too! ELDERLY T HE HEAR I NG C A R E CE N T RE Check your hearing health at Norfolk Show orfolk hearing care company, The Hearing Care Centre, is looking for volunteers to have their hearing tested, to highlight the importance of looking after your hearing, at this year’s Norfolk Show. The company, which has 7 centres across the county, is showing its passion for helping those who suffer from hearing loss, by asking show-goers to see how easy and pain-free it is to have a simple check. Managing Director of the company, Karen Finch, said, “At The Hearing Care Centre we strive to be more than just a company that sells hearing aids. people to be back in the real world where sound is all around us. “It is not until you lose your hearing, that you realise all of the sounds you take for granted. People have regular dental checks and eye tests but never give their hearing a second thought. The longer an untreated hearing loss goes undetected the quicker it will deteriorate.” The Hearing Care Centre will be at the Norfolk Showground, on Wednesday 28th and Thursday 29th June 2017 at stand 49 on Third Avenue. Are you struggling financially, relying on credit cards or an overdraft? • Do you ever feel like you are worth more than you’re currently earning? • Do you ever feel like there’s not enough time in the day? • Do you ever feel like you have a greater purpose than the path you’re currently on? • Do you want to make changes, make more money, have more free time, be with positive people and build a great future for yourself and your family?
Remember this: “If you think it’s too good to be true, I still get paid. If you take a look and join me, we BOTH get paid. If you don’t join me, well I still get paid!”
Success – why not you?
I
f you want things to be different, YOU have to make the change. Life doesn’t have a remote control, so you have to get up and change it yourself. And of course if you do nothing, guess what... Nothing changes, you will be in the same place this time next year.
Compare this to what most people focus on earning: linear income, which is “one-shot” compensation or payment in the form of a fee, wage, commission or salary which is directly proportional to the number of hours invested in it - 40 hours of pay for 40 hours of work.
If you’d like More Money, More Free Time, build a better future for you and your family and you’re open mind enough to just look at how you can change your life and earn an unlimited monthly income which grows and grows every month, take a look at our website and get instant access to see how simple it is to be in control of your own destiny.
Here’s an example of Residual Income; In 1998 my college spent 35 minutes showing a friend of his how this business works. Last month he got paid for that conversation for the 216th time for that 35 minute chat, 18 years ago.
This is NOT a ‘Get Rich Quick Scheme’ but it is a ‘Get Rich Quicker System’ where you can earn a full time ‘residual’ income working just a few spare hours each week, and change your life in a very short space of time. Why should you work 40 plus hours a week for 40 plus years of your life? So what is ‘Residual Income’? Residual income (also called passive income) is income that continues to be generated after the initial effort has been made.
So… how soon can you spare 10 minutes so I can answer all the questions I know you’ll have, and explain how you can get started immediately? Remember this: “If you think it’s too good to be true, I still get paid. If you take a look and join me, we BOTH get paid. If you don’t join me, well I still get paid!” Take a look at our website and get instant access to find out more about this great opportunity. www.Successpro.me.uk
