Poppy Appeal 2011 Feline Care Facing Closure It’s never too early to volunteer for the Poppy Appeal. We all know that Remembrance Sunday is in November and that poppies are available in stores, schools and shops for the 2 weeks leading up to Remembrance Day, what we don’t see is the work that goes on behind the scenes during the year. For the past 5 years the Poppy Appeal in Attleborough has been very successfully organised by Mr Aubrey-Cound.
that are made available in the area and at the end of Remembrance tide accounting for all the funds raised.
All the money given to the Poppy Appeal is used to support our serving and ex-service men/women and their beneficiaries that request our help and with the recent conflicts particularly in Iraq and Afghanistan the need has never been greater.
The “happy band of collectors” that has helped in past years will be on stand by to assist again this year.
Unfortunately Mr Aubrey-Cound has to step down this year so the need for a new organiser has arisen. With the background organisation that needs to be undertaken during the year and any training that might be required we are looking for a replacement organiser for this area NOW. This volunteer position entails ordering, distributing and accounting for all the poppies and wreaths
Dispatch August 2011
There is of course support and help available from our Poppy support network and Mr Aubrey-Cound is happy to assist with supplying all his records from the past years.
This volunteer position would suit a newly retired couple, a couple of friends or someone who has time to spare with good organisational skills. You do not need to be ex-services or a member of the Royal British Legion but just someone who feels able to give their time to a worthwhile cause. If you feel you are able to help please contact Lynne Hatch the Legions Community Fundraiser in Norfolk on 01603 438132 or email: lhatch@britishlegion.co.uk
A local cat rescue centre is facing closure if funds cannot be found to keep it open. Feline Care on Roudham Road, East Harling, has been under it’s current management for the last five years but charity Trustees, based in Sussex say they can no longer cope with the responsibility of the Norfolk branch. Staff and volunteers at the Norfolk sanctuary, home to around 140 cats at any time, have been given the chance to register Feline Care as a charity and take on the 3½ acre site but need to raise £70,000 by the end of September.
This news has hit us hard as we are already working flat out but we know there must be enough people out there who can help save us”. An appeal is being made for donations towards the site purchase and cheques can be made payable to Feline Care, Roudham Road, East Harling NR16 2QN. You can also donate online via the centre’s website www.felinecare.org.uk All donations gratefully received.
Centre manager, Molly Farrar, said “We are a small group of caring individuals who work our hardest to help as many cats as we can, with limited funds but plenty of enthusiasm.

Bereavement Support Group Launched In Wymondham. A new bereavement support group is being launched on 4th August aimed at helping the newly bereaved with common issues such as: How to manage birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas and other special occasions; how to deal with the unfair expectations of other people; and where to go for additional support if you need it. “I have been trained as a bereavement counsellor with CRUSE and the services they provide are excellent” says Rosedale’s Marion Baynton, “but since Rosedale Funeral Home opened in Wymondham, I have had a growing awareness of the value that a bereavement support group such as this would offer to the newly bereaved. Grief is meant to be shared. Everyone’s experience of grief is unique, and a support group enables you to mix with others in the same situation and find people who care – and understand – what you are going through. Everyone is welcome, no matter how long they have been bereaved, or which funeral director they used.”
The group which has been set up and funded by Rosedale Funeral Home in association with the Town Green Centre Network will run fortnightly on the first and third Thursday morning of each month from 10.00 am to 12.00 noon in the Frank Bunn Room, Town Green Centre, Back Lane, Wymondham and will be led by Vicky Goddard Dip CP from Focused On.
There is no need to book to attend, you can just turn up, but if you would like more information, or need a lift, please contact Marion Baynton or Andy Free at Rosedale Funeral Home, 16 Middleton Street, Wymondham (01953) 601103. www.rosedalefuneralhome.co.uk www.vickygoddard.co.uk

thank all the helpers at this event and those who donated prizes etc. It is due to their continued and valued support throughout the year that we are able to provide funding for the work needed to help those living with cancer in this area.

one kind dog walker asked me if I was looking for the Brownies, as they were ‘over there’ - he looked so startled when I said there were 80 of them out tonight! It was a fantastic evening, and I’m really grateful to our leaders, parent helpers and friends at the trefoil guild who made this event possible”. Starting from Church Infant School, they made their way round Scarning Watermeadows in small groups trying different activities on the way. Den building was a big success, with the teddies enjoying some spectacular ‘grand designs’ of their own!
So your guarantee is worth the paper it’s written on.
A scavenger hunt provided an opportunity for the girls to mix with their brownie friends from other units - 1st Beeston and 1st, 3rd & 4th Dereham Brownies were all represented, with girls from 3rd Dereham Guides running each activity station.
Because of our local building contacts, we are able to offer a complete service for conservatories or garden rooms.

All girls made a brilliant ‘teddy badge’ of their own, as well as sharing their favourite teddy’s experiences and racing to win teddy sweet’s in the ‘teddy drive’. Of course, no trip round the water meadows would be complete without a chance to let off some steam on the play equipment - and one or two of the teddies joined in too! It was fantastic to see all the girls at the end, joining in with the ‘yogi bear’ song we had learnt. The brownies had more than earned their ‘teddytastic’ challenge badge, and guides had certainly earned their chips afterwards! Relocation, Relocation By W F Smith and Co Consultant Roger Sharp. a parent cannot take a child out of the country without the written consent of the other parent or the permission of the court. The court must only give consent based on what is best for the child. Each case has to be decided on its own facts and those vary greatly. Above: Roger Sharp This is not about property but about one of the most difficult decisions a family court must make: whether to allow a parent to permanently take a child abroad, a step that will invariably result in the other parent losing a great deal of personal contact. In the modern world it is not unusual for children to be born to parents of differing nationalities and, on a marriage breakdown, for one of them to “return home”. A parent might also want to go emigrate for a better life or to follow a new partner. Should the court always permit the children to as well? The law states that
The courts have, from time to time, tried to offer guidance on how to assess what is best for the child. In most cases (97%) children will end up with one parent (usually mother) most of the time with the other having “contact”. There are, however, a few cases where the “other parent” actually spends a great deal of time with the children (shared care cases). In recent years the guidelines from the courts have tended to place emphasis on the mother’s situation, i.e. are her intentions the “right” ones and not intended to cut the father out? Has she thought things through properly?
What would be the effect on her, and thus on the children, if her application for permission was refused?
Actually the father could claim the children were with him for 6 consecutive days in any week (counting the “handover”days).
The guidance has seemed to give great weight to the mother’s wishes as long as her motivations were genuine.
Mother wanted to “go home” to Canada with the children.
Recent cases show how divergent the results can be when the guidance is applied by different courts. In one a father had the child 23 nights out of every 56 days; permission granted to take the child to New Zealand. In another the children spent 41% of their time with father: permission granted to remove to Germany. In yet another there was an arrangement of almost equal shared care; permission refused to the US.
She was at first given permission but the father appealed, and succeeded. The court emphasised the clear difference between the usual sole care cases and the “shared care” ones. In shared care cases the mother’s wishes were only one of the circumstances to be weighed up alongside the effect on the children of losing contact with their father. The law itself has not changed. It is just now a little clearer that the effect on the mother of not getting permission is not the only, or even predominant, consideration.
A very recent case has tried to clarify things. Here a Canadian mother and Polish father shared care.
It is also important for a judge to show in the judgement that all the necessary factors have been weighed up.
The children were with father 5 nights and mother 9 nights in any 14 day period.
Not to do so risks a successful appeal.

Chris Packham Will Join Breckland Judging Panel Organisers have snapped up the services of TV countryside celebrity Chris Packham to help judge the 2011 Breckland Photography Competition - an annual contest that celebrates rural life in the district. Breckland is a beautiful and diverse part of Norfolk but to capture its essence in a picture requires an original and creative eye backed up by a good understanding of photographic techniques.”
Above: Chris Packham Well known and loved as a presenter on countless television shows including the hugely popular Springwatch and Countryfile programmes, Chris Packham is equally well known for his passion for wildlife, conservation and the countryside.
The 2011 Breckland Photography Competition opened for entries in May and Mr Packham will assess the entries after the competition closes on 16th September to decide who will be named winners this year.
As a professional wildlife photographer who also trained as a wildlife film cameraman he is well qualified to judge the Breckland contest.
Lynda Turner, Breckland Council Executive Member Localism, Community and Environmental Awareness said: “I am delighted that Chris has agreed to help judge the contest this year. The standard of photographs we get in from residents is always high, so I am sure he is going to be impressed. We have already begun to receive entries and I am sure that having such an inspirational judge will get people even more fired up about the competition”.

Sexual And Domestic Violence A charity sets up new services in Great Yarmouth, Norwich and Thetford. The Sexual Violence Alliance (SeVA), a local charity supporting survivors of sexual and domestic violence, has secured a second year of funding from the Equality Human Rights Commission (EHRC) to support Diversity awareness work with communities and organisations representing minority ethnic groups across the county. “In the first year services have been improved for individuals, particularly those who suffer inequality and disadvantage, focusing especially on ethnic minority ethnic groups and people with mental health issues; two priority groups in the county who can sometimes miss out” said Alessia Pinna, SeVA’s Community Services Development Manager
(alessia@seva-uk.org). “The second year will see a consolidation of this work by increasing the range of activity delivered alongside our partner organisations and the development of training initiatives to increase the number of counsellors and support workers to support clients from BME groups.” The need for this work was identified by EHRC research in 2007 that highlighted a lack of specialised third sector services, particularly in Great Yarmouth and Thetford, for people who have experienced sexual and domestic violence and who then suffer from mental health problems and the consequential effects of loss of confidence, increased isolation and significant depression. A particularly
exciting initiative in this second year of the Project will be the provision of time-limited educational preventive programmes for people from minority ethnic groups. Entitled ‘The Power of SELF – My Journey’. These workshops will focus on general issues of self-worth, assertiveness, and rights, and the difficulties many people face in feeling entitled to them. Therefore, it may be of interest not only for survivors of domestic abuse but also for a wider range of participants. In order to deliver these activities the charity will need to work in partnership with other organisations who already work with the target groups. ‘This will be a really
exciting opportunity for collaboration in order to enable people from other cultures living in Norfolk to come together to explore their needs and rights’ said Ms Pinna. SeVA is also looking for new volunteers (Counsellors, Support Workers, and Facilitators for support groups). Free training will be run in Autumn. Application forms are available. Homes & Gardens Norfolk Show Gold! Two in a Row We were surprised and delighted to win an RHS Gold Medal for the second consecutive year at the Royal Norfolk Show’s garden design competition. The theme set by the Royal Horticultural Society was ‘Hot & Spicy’ and we had to put our thinking caps on to come up with a design that would meet this criteria, and also showcase our hard-landscaping specialist skill-set. It’s not easy to find ‘Hot & Spicy’ hardlandscaping materials! We came up with a design using hot orange clay paviors, burnt black limestone setts, volcanic lava gravel and ancient black bog oak. We also incorporated a fire-pit that produced ‘smoke’ using a water fed mister unit.

J&S Homeworks Need your Fascias replaced? Time to replace your windows? Think it will be too expensive? Think again! Call Jason now for a free no obligation quote and be pleasantly surprised by how little it can cost to transform the exterior of your home. Maintaining the exterior of a house can improve its functionality and efficiency, as well as increase ‘curb appeal’. The appearance of your home will be vastly enhanced by replacing your guttering, fascias and soffits. When should you replace your Fascias and Guttering?
can be replaced in UPVC which now comes in several different colours and effects.Summer is the ideal time to start making improvements. The risk of rain is very low and the days are longer than at any point of the year. Working with uPVC is easiest as it is not as brittle as it would be in winter. Also Birds are well and truly settled, some nests can easily fill a plastic shopping bag - so that weight on top of Felt or Soffit can be very damaging and decay and carcasses are left behind. When should you replace your windows? There are a few clear signs that can help you reach a decision. Ask yourself the following questions:
If your Fascia Boards are made of timber and are not properly maintained they will rot and deteriorate. If they are not in good condition they will not be able to carry the guttering, which can be heavy after heavy rain fall. Can you ignore a bit of rot at the ends? No the rot will almost certainly progress further. Your Fascia, Soffit and Guttering
Do your windows have condensation or a frost buildup? If you touch the interior pane of glass is it cold in the winter or warm in the summer? When next to your window does it feel colder than the rest of the house? From inside, take a lighted candle and hold it in line with the window frame,
does the flame flicker anywhere around the frame? Look at your windows outside; is the trim rotting, cracking or missing? Is the glass broken or cracked anywhere? Do your windows ever get stuck or won’t stay closed or open? Are you unhappy with the way your windows look? If you answered yes to any of the questions above, it is time to replace your windows. Replacement windows help reduce your heating and cooling bills and provide better UV protection - The money saved means they will have soon paid for themselves.
Safety Certificate enables them to do all jobs big or small, from repairing a gutter to a full house renovation. They pride themselves on their competitive prices and high level of service, take a lot of pride in their work and hope their customers can see this in the end result. Homes & Gardens Norfolk Constabulary Tips To Keep Your Home And Garden Safe And Secure This Summer Butterflies flutter, bees buzz, the sun shines brightly and the scent of barbecues fill the air... it must be summer! Relaxing in the garden is a quintessential English summer pastime, but make sure in doing so, you don’t open your doors to thieves.
Consider using weights at the bottom of those garden ornaments in view, to deter opportunist thieves. Protect Your Home
Protect Your Garden Remember to lock your doors and shut your windows if spending time outside, to deter ‘walk-in’ thieves. Keep your garage and garden shed locked with proper security locks, and keep any tools secure, out of sight and property marked. Trim back any plants or hedges that a burglar could hide behind.
Keep your front and back doors locked or in view when you are at home. Shut windows to rooms that are not being occupied - do not be tempted to open all windows in warm weather. Consider fitting a door chain and spy hole - a chain allows you to speak to the caller without opening the door fully and the spy hole allows you to see who is at the door.
Fit five lever mortice deadlocks to all external doors.
Never leave your house or car keys in or near a door or window.
Fit multi-locking systems to patio doors or install mortice security bolts with removable keys at the top and bottom of both doors.
Consider fitting a burglar alarm, but make sure it is installed by a company who is registered with SSAIB or NSI and is fitted to BS EN50131.
Consider fitting a letterbox cage or restricter which prevents burglars from putting their hands or gadgets through the letter box and trying the latches from the inside.
Make sure you have up-to-date home and contents insurance.
Never leave a spare key in a convenient hiding place such as under the doormat - burglars know all the usual hiding places.

Health, beauty & wellbeing Fitness Pilates By Sally Harrison. What is Fitness Pilates? How old do you feel? No matter how old you are Fitness Pilates can make a difference. Fitness Pilates is a graduated
programme of exercises to improve strength, encouraging you to release stiffness and to become more aware of how you use your body. It focuses on your “powerhouse” (as Joseph Pilates called your core muscles); and good body
alignment - whether standing, sitting, lying or moving. Who was Joseph Pilates? Joseph Pilates was born in 1880. A sickly child, he decided to become as fit and healthy as he possibly could be! He studied and mastered many forms of physical fitness. During the First World War he developed his own technique in order to help fellow prisoners of war. Later he went on to work with dancers and continued to develop his way of working to meet the particular needs of the people with whom he was working. Today his technique continues to develop through research and experience of the joy of movement. Many dancers practise Pilates as do many sports professionals to improve strength, suppleness, balance and coordination.
“Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness. In order to achieve happiness, it is imperative to gain mastery of your body. If at the age of 30 you are stiff and out of shape, you are old. If at 60 you are supple and strong then you are young” Joseph Pilates Why come to Fitness Pilates? People come to Fitness Pilates for many reasons. Some people come because they‘ve heard that it’s good for you, some because they have noticed that they are becoming stiffer. Aches and pains can be eased away, and people have reported feeling stronger and more confident as they make friends with their body again! Those with back pain can find Fitness Pilates very helpful, and, of course, slowing down and giving yourself 100% attention is golden time for anyone who leads a busy life.

Take Note Of The Following Tips To Avoid Any Problems Whilst Driving This Summer Drowned or lost key fobs It’s not unusual for motorists to either lose their keys in sand or take their remote control keys for a swim and then find that car doors won’t open. Salt in sea water can ruin electric circuits and render transponder keys useless. Keep keys safe and dry but also make sure that you know the alternative
method for getting into the car if the key fob fails. Hayfever Minimise the effect of hayfever when driving. If you’re doing 70mph and sneeze you lose your vision for as much as 100 metres. Have a ‘fit’ of, say eight sneezes in a row, and you’ve just travelled ‘blind’ for nearly half a mile!
Hayfever is particularly bad in the summer but accidents could be minimised if sufferers take action. Only take medication which doesn’t cause drowsiness Glare Being blinded by sun glare causes many accidents, particularly under clear skies at dawn or dusk.
Keep a clean and unscratched pair of sunglasses handy but avoid Photochromic lenses, which darken in strong sunlight - the ultraviolet rays which trigger the change are filtered by the windscreen so that the glasses will change only slowly. This is dangerous when driving in and out of tunnels for example.
