Talking Newspaper Needs Your Help Wymondham & Attleborough Talking Newspaper is asking for more help as the organisation celebrates its fifteenth anniversary. It was on April 10 1998 that the first edition of the audio news and information service was sent out.
Every listener is provided with a free machine on which to play the digital memory stick.
Volunteers produce and despatch a weekly digest of news and features for 60 blind or partially sighted listeners, in addition to compiling a monthly audio magazine.
The service can also be accessed online via the W A T N website www.watn.org.uk.
Now the group is looking for additional help and they would like to hear from anyone who is interested in becoming a sound technician, a postal wallet administrator or who would be prepared to join the management committee. Full training will be provided. The organisation, which will record the 800th edition of their local news service at the end of this year, is also keen to increase the number of listeners who receive the free service.
The Regal Experience Hell Drivers, a tough gritty British crime drama from 1957,will be the main feature of the Regal Experience’s next classic film show at the Wymondham Ex-Services’ Club (Regal Cinema) on Sunday May 19th (2.30pm). Hell Drivers sees Stanley Baker playing an ex-convict who drives for a cheapjack haulage firm and comes across a plot between his vicious foreman and crooked manager.
For more details, please contact Mrs Vale on 01953 605434 or leave a message on the website.
The movie features a galaxy of British stars of the time, among them Herbert Lom, Patrick McGoohan, Alfie Bass, Jill Ireland, Gordon Jackson, the incomparable Sid James and even a young Sean Connery. Peggy Cummins, the beautiful female lead, is scheduled to make a personal appearance at the show to discuss her distinguished career, both in England and Hollywood, during the 1940s and 1950s.
Alternatively, go along to the W A T N annual general meeting at 7.30pm on Thursday, May 16 in the Francis Room of Connaught Hall, Attleborough.
Supporting will be Moment of Decision, a short British crime film from 1962. There will also be a display of memorabilia relating to the movie career of Peggy Cummins.
W A T N secretary, Georgette Vale said: “The volunteers have produced thousands of hours of recordings over the years. We are very grateful for all the work they put in and for the support provided by the local community.”

Old Buckenham Airshow Saturday 22nd & Sunday 23rd of June 2013. Full Lineup For The Biggest Airshow Yet Revealed: Wildcat Aerobatics - It’ll come as no surprise that our first booking was Old Buckenhams resident Aerobatic Display Team. What will surprise everyone is the incredible display they’re working on just for us. Mystery Ship - Old Buckenham Airshow is delighted to confirm that it has just become the first airshow to book the extraordinary Travel Air Type R Mystery Ship. The Mystery Ship entered the 1929 Cleveland Air Race and, without warning, won the race against a field of military entrants who had previously dominated the event. It has taken over four years of painstaking work to re-create this legend using the original plans. The result promises to be one of the most significant additions to the display flying circuit in years. RV8tors - Flying their remarkably fast, fully aerobatic aircraft with powerful smoke systems, the RV8tors perform a thrilling and unforgettable display. Lauren Richardson - Lauren is a 25 year old Pitts Special expert and Britain’s top female aerobatic pilot. Stylish, action packed lines contrast against fast and graceful sweeping figures as Lauren shows off this beautiful red and white biplane in all its modern barnstorming and extreme aerobatic glory. Old Flying Machine Company The Old Flying Machine Company is arguably the best warbird display company in the UK and it’s Spitfire and Mustang Duo of MH434 and Ferocious Frankie must surely be the most famous single aircraft on earth. The stars of countless movies and TV programmes, these two legends are of major historical significance, yet they will be taken to their limits in a thrilling display, accompanied by the soundtrack of their mighty engines.
May 2013
Brendan O’Brien - Brendan will be familiar from his TV series and numerous appearances as one of aviation’s leading exponents. Renowned as one of the most talented pilots every to display, Brendan will combine his extraordinary Flying Circus with an attempt at the shortest ever truck top landing. If successful we will be applying for this record to be recognized by the Guinness Book of Records, adding to over 200 FAI World Records Brendan already holds. Hangar 11: Curtiss P-40 Kittyhawk In the hands of Pete Teichmann, air display legend, this film star saw active service in WWII, and today provides a stunning display which puts many modern aerobatic machines to shame. The noise is also a wonderful feature of this important piece of military history. Matt Summers: Matt’s airshow debut was at Old Buckenham 2012 in his Vans RV7. His flawless display was the talk of the aviation community immediately afterward, none of whom could believe that a “rookie” could wow the crowds as seasoned pros can. Matt’s back for more, so make sure you see this inevitable air display legend at the beginning of his career. John Sully - John Sully’s Taylor Titch is a Formula One Racer, designed in 1964 to an RAeC competition specification using the Continental C 90 aero engine. The display consists of fast fly-pasts, zoom climbs, wing overs, Cuban eights and rolling manoeuvres. Owing to the small size of the aircraft the speed appears much higher than expected and gives a sparkling performance. Adrian Willis - Adrian Willis is a highly experienced aerobatic pilot and is one of the UK’s leading aerobatic instructors, teaching the next generation of aviators their trade. Not only is Adrian displaying at the show, but you can also book a trial lesson with him over the airshow weekend to experience the thrills of aerobatic flying first hand with a master of the art.

Window Geeks “Replacing your steamed-up windows doesn’t mean you have to replace the whole window…Save thousands by changing only the glass”… It can be stressful when things break or go wrong, especially when it seems the only solution comes at great expense. Unexpected bills can hit households very hard at a time when every penny counts and it means that thousands of homeowners put off fixing their windows or doors for fear of the high costs usually associated with these types of products... Well now you can relax…because WindowGeeks, a national window, door and conservatory repair specialist, has expanded into Norwich and will service the whole of the Norfolk region, giving local home owners access to real money-saving options; one that can reduce what could be an alarming bill in the thousands to a far more acceptable one in the low hundreds - and in most cases even lower than that. The fact is that the average single repair or replacement undertaken by WindowGeeks, which includes locks, handles and hinges, as well as the usual replacement of steamed-up double glazed units is less
than £60...not surprising really when you consider that the replacement of a single steamed-up double glazed window starts from as low as £30 including VAT and fitting…which is why, at this point, many people take the opportunity to upgrade to energy efficient double glazed units. Our new local and experienced team, headed up by Steve Olley, join all of our other skilled craftsmen and women throughout the UK, each providing a professional and cost effective service to 1,000s of customers from Plymouth in the Southwest, through Norwich in the East, up to Preston in the North and all points in-between… “Lots of people have problems with their windows,” says Steve, “They get steamed-up and won’t clear, or the locks stick or the handles get loose…and it becomes even more of a problem at this time of year when cold draughts get through...but what’s really surprising is that most people don’t realise that all of these problems can be fixed quickly and without spending a fortune or having to
sell one or more of their children, unless they want to of course”… WindowGeeks has over 38 years’ experience in the glazing industry and it’s sad to think that there are still quite a few traditional window companies that either refuse or just don’t want to carryout repairs…now were not saying that all double glazing companies don’t carry out repairs, many do, and do a great job, but Steve adds, “In most cases they’re not really interested in the smaller jobs and that’s what’s so great about WindowGeeks, we offer a real cost-effective solution, which makes it a very easy decision for our customers to choose us...there’s no pressure sales from us because there’s no viable alternative, unless, that is, you want to spend 10, 20 or even 100 times more on replacing all your double glazing!” While the cost savings might be the biggest draw, there’s another reason customers should choose WindowGeeks and one that has inevitably convinced many customers throughout the UK to use us;
“It’s all about honesty and trust,” says Steve. “There’s integrity in what WindowGeeks do and that’s very important to me, we tell the truth, only charge for what needs doing and we always honour our promises…We run a very successful and ethical business based on good old fashioned customer service backed up with top quality products and support from our head office.” WindowGeeks provides free quotations with; • No call out charges • No credit card charges • No deposits • No minimum order values, • No high pressure sales men or women • No hidden extras • 10 year guarantee on all glazed products All our quotes include VAT and Fitting Call now for a FREE QUOTE on 0800 61 22 943 or visit us at www.windowgeeks.co.uk

Financial Advice Does Not Have To Be Costly! There have been so many changes in the Financial Services sector recently we can quite believe that the general public must be totally confused. There are all the changes in the recent Budget, a change to the proposed date for the flat rate pension, GAD (Government Actuary Department) rates have changed and there are proposed changes/an introduction to a cap on care fees. With all the changes/proposed changes it must be difficult to know where you will stand financially with any planning strategy.

Any potential cost for our services would always be outlined first before any cost is incurred, so a client has complete clarity about what they may have to pay. We also have a ‘Client Guarantee’ where we would refund any fee that a client has paid if they are not completely happy with our advice/service.
Additional changes have also affected the financial advice sector with the introduction of the Retail Distribution review (RDR) and that financial advisers must, in the main, charge fees and not be paid any commission. Hence the headline, Financial Advice does not have to be costly!
So if you need financial advice please speak to us, you may be surprised how little the cost may be.
Here at ML Financial Associates we cannot always be sure whether we can help a client until we establish their requirements. That is why we will always have a ‘at our cost’ meeting with any potential new client and this free meeting will enable both of us to

Savvy Savers Will Get A Better Deal Savvy savers who signed up to the ‘Norfolk Big Switch and Save’ could expect to knock around £111 a year off their bills it has been revealed. The ‘Switch and Save’ scheme was launched in Dereham on 1st March and nearly 9,000 Norfolk households signed up by the 8th April closing date. Householders were asked to submit details of their gas and electricity bills to enter a national auction and find out if another supplier could offer a better deal. The Norfolk scheme was organised jointly by five local councils. William Nunn, Leader of Breckland, one of the five participating Norfolk Councils said: “This is great news and shows that when local authorities work together we can get a better deal for our residents. We know that households are currently struggling to pay surging energy bills and have worked hard to promote this initiative. In Breckland, we leafleted every household, advertised in local papers and held sign-up sessions in

all five market towns. This has really paid off and up to 2,600 Breckland households could benefit”. On 9th April, figures from Norfolk and over 60 councils across the country were put forward to a national energy auction. With over 160,000 households signed up, energy companies were asked to offer their very best prices to win the bid. Households who registered for the scheme could save on average £111, with the highest average saving being £139. Households will be contacted individually to let them know how much they could expect to save if they choose to switch to a new supplier. There is no obligation for households who signed up to the Switch and Save scheme, to switch to the selected supplier.

Garden Tips For May After such a long, cold winter the warmer, sunnier conditions bring life to everything in the garden. Many plants from small herbaceous to larger shrubs and trees took a battering so assess good, poor or even dead items and plan replacements. It’s a good time to rethink how your garden should look. Do you want a mass of colour or certain themes; shrubs, perennials, trees, features like a pond, pergola or a summer house? With such a dilemma for our bee and butterfly populations, try to use plants that attract them. Weeds such as nettles are good food sources for caterpillars, so create a “natural” area, with a small log pile for insects, bee houses or a hedgehog box. Some early flowering roses will be in flower soon, including the beautiful useful shrub rose ‘Canary Bird’ with yellow single flowers, which can be planted towards the back of a border or trained as a wall plant and ‘Rosa Omeiensis Ptercantha’ - delicate fern like foliage, spectacular translucent thorns
and unusual single white flowers that only have four petals.
Prune shrubs that flower early such as Forsythia and Ribes.
Early flowering climbing roses include the semi-evergreen, thornless Banksiae Family, like ‘Rosa Banksiae Lutea’, which has small yellow double flowers, but they do require sheltered positions. ‘Mme.
To prevent diseases, a good programme of watering and feeding is essential, liquid feed with a fertiliser containing high potash or one of the maxicrop range. If you spray, alternate your chemicals so the diseases don’t build up. Keep up the slug and snail watch and for infestations of aphids and apply a treatment that is right for your situation.
Gregoire Staechelin’, pale pink flowers with a deep reverse, superb fragrance with flowers that hang down so you see the beauty of each bloom - fantastic draped over a pergola or arch. Keep all newly planted roses well watered, train new shoots on climbers and ramblers horizontally with green jute string, flexi-tie or electricians cable ties, as this will provide the plants with more flowers. Beds need to be regularly hoed to reduce weeds germinating and top soil open and friable. Apply a general fertilizer if not already done. Perennials grow quickly so install support where required.
Hoe or cultivate regularly and water in the evening when the sun is going down. RHS Chelsea Flower Show is held on May 21st-25th. Why not visit this year and be inspired. Simon White & Peter Chinnery of Peter Beales Roses.
If you haven’t yet, construct your hanging baskets and containers. Don’t just think bedding plants, containers can contain small shrubs, for short or long term display. Why not make them really work and use vegetables such as tumbling tomatoes, dwarf beans or strawberries? The lawn becomes a feature now, mow little and often, without the box on in dry weather. In the vegetable garden make regular sowings of leafy salads and carrots so they crop all summer.

Summer Hair Care Tips
Treating a Pain in the Neck.
The reality is that summer sun and humidity can damage your hair’s cuticle and result in dry, drab, split, brittle or frizzy hair and ends.
Neck pain is a common complaint which I see on a weekly basis, especially in those who work at a desk or drive for a living. Often overlooked, it can be a serious problem for workers, leading to headaches, stress and referred symptoms including pain, tingling, numbness and weakness spreading into the arms and hands. Whilst a regular massage can help to ease muscle tension and pain on a temporary basis, it is certainly not a cure. So what should you do if your neck pain keeps returning? If your pain is worst when sat in one position for lengthy periods, then chances are it is caused by your posture. Poor posture day after day results in muscle imbalances which set this position as the ‘norm’. The most common scenario is tight chest and posterior neck muscles, coupled with weak anterior neck and shoulder

blade stabilising muscles. This results in a rounded, forward positioned shoulder joint and a neck which juts forwards, moving the weight of the head in front of the spine. This all leads to increased tension in the upper back and neck muscles as they tirelessly try to correct this faulty position. The key behind treating this kind of neck pain is correcting the muscle imbalances and retraining the body to assume a good postural position. Whilst massage alone feels good for a couple of days, add in a few simple exercises, a couple of postural cues and revise your desk set-up and the body begins to correct itself, leaving you able to carry out your job without a pain in the neck! Summer may bring glorious visions of natural highlights and long windblown hair.
Consider these additional summer hair care tips: • If you normally use hot hair tools (blow dryers, hot irons, electric curlers) every day, try and give your hair a break during the summer months. Consider letting your air dry. Take a break from hot curling. • Hair braided when wet will air dry into beautiful waves. • For sun exposed or sun damaged tresses perform regular deep hair conditioning treatments utilizing fabulous hair repair products such as Phytokarite Intensive Treatment, Phytocitrus Mask or Rene Furterer After Sun Repair Mask. • Jojoba oil applied to the ends of your strands will help soften them. Jojoba oil also works wonders on frizzy hair. Jojoba oil can also be utilized as a pre-shampoo
treatment or applied to dry strands for protection during the day. • For extra conditioning treatment apply a deep conditioner to damp or dry tresses, wrap in plastic wrap or a shower cap just before bedtime. Allow the deep conditioner to soak into damaged hair sections overnight for extra repair and remoisturizing benefits. • When you find yourself out in the sun, at the beach or at the pool without preplanning, reach for a hat to cover delicate strands. If a hat won’t do, great the next best thing which is the sunscreen. • Slather a regular SPF product on your tresses making sure to concentrate the product onto your scalp as well as your tresses. Although not a perfect solution, it will help save your tresses from major sun damage. • If you are wedded to your blow dryer, use a leave - in conditioner designed to protect your hair when blow drying.

Top Tips For Better Ageing From Age UK We know it’s not just about living longer it’s about living healthily and happily for longer. Follow our top tips for ageing better together. Exercise You don’t have to join an exercise class or the gym – things like gardening, playing tennis or bowls, or going for a brisk walk can be just as effective. Just make sure you check with your doctor if you have a condition or haven’t exercised in a while. Eat a healthy diet Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables - aim for five portions a day. Too much salt increases your risk of high blood pressure and stroke. Check food labels for the salt content, particularly in processed meats, savoury snacks, biscuits, bacon, soups and ready meals. Too much saturated fat raises cholesterol and increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. Foods high in saturated fat include biscuits, cakes, pastries, sausages, meat pies, fatty meat and cheese.

Don’t drink too much alcohol. Know how many units you are drinking, and speak to your GP if you find yourself regularly having a drink to help you cope. Don’t smoke It’s never too late to feel the benefits of giving up smoking. Ask your GP or pharmacist about local one-to-one or group support and anti-smoking medication. Engage socially with others Why not volunteer with Age UK? It doesn’t how much or little time you have – with more than 170 local Age UKs, as well as around 500 shops, you can get involved in your local community and meet new people. Age UK volunteers do everything from gardening and driving to visiting people living alone. You could be serving customers and helping to dress the window in one of our shops. Or you could work behind the scenes sorting through donations
or helping with basic administration. We also welcome book or antique enthusiasts in our shops to help price donations. With your help we can deliver more services to people in later life. Have a positive attitude about ageing Research shows that older people who have a positive attitude to ageing, and who work with the changes it brings, tend to have better health and live longer than those who see only the negatives. Devoting time to old friends and favourite hobbies is important - but remember to explore new interests too. It’s easy to meet new friends, try new activities or share something you enjoy in your local area. Age UK supports more than 85 Friendship Centres across England and works with a network of 600 independent forums of older people.
Get regular health checkups Speak to your GP if there is a family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis or glaucoma. This helps identify any problems before symptoms arise. Don’t ignore invitations for a flu jab or cancer screening. NHS screening programmes for breast, bowel and cervical cancer are there to pick up problems at an early stage. Protect your eyes Take advantage of free NHS sight tests if you’re eligible. Have your eyes checked every two years or annually if you are aged 70 or over. Get sufficient good-quality sleep Getting a decent night’s sleep isn’t just about beating tiredness. Good-quality sleep has additional health benefits, such as reducing your risk of depression, lowering inflammation, helping stress and even improving your heart health.

Subaru XV 2.0D SE Lux Premium By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist, Follow Tim on Twitter: @carwriteups or visit www.carwriteups.co.uk. THE DOWN-TO-EARTH Subaru XV unites city style with urban and off-road ability. It also has another ace up its sleeve - it’s the safest model in its class for child occupant protection. Every XV is equipped with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and a Boxer engine - ensuring an engaging and dependable drive in all conditions. Despite a ground clearance of 220mm, the Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) offers
a low centre of gravity, which aids its “on-road” grip, and helps it to achieve 0-62mph in 9.3 seconds. The 2.0 diesel XV, on test here, is likely to be the best-selling model, offering class-leading fuel economy of 50.4mpg on the combined cycle, while emitting 146g/km of CO2. The car comes fully loaded with a standard kit list sure to make many premium compact SUV makers feel embarrassed.
You can expect to find traction control, Subaru Vehicle Dynamics Control (SVDC), front, side, curtain and knee airbags, 17-inch alloy wheels, daytime LED running lights and automatic air conditioning. The flagship SE Lux Premium model also comes with cruise control, a rear-view camera, Bluetooth functionality and USB/iPod connectivity. And if that’s not enough, a sunroof, Keyless Smart Entry, pushbutton start, leather seats and satellite navigation are thrown in too. If SUVs do it for you, this could be one to consider. A couple of things let the Scooby down though: some cheap interior plastics and a heavy clutch, but it’s a realistic choice if you’re keen to keep your family safe. Pricing for the XV range starts at £21,295 for the 1.6i S model and rises to £29,995 for the range-topping 2.0D SE Lux Premium.
