Norfolk-Based Training Company Receives National Accreditation Norfolk-based training provider, Britannia Safety & Training is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a coveted accreditation for asbestos awareness training, by the nationally recognised IATP (Independent Asbestos Training Providers). IATP was formed to provide independent asbestos auditing for asbestos contractors and training providers, ensuring that they comply with the requirements of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006.
bespoke centre which would perfectly suit their training requirements and features a massive training warehouse with zones for specialist training, including a dedicated asbestos training area.
The qualification is nationally recognised by all major contractors and is another important step for Britannia Safety & Training as it confirms their status as the only dedicated training provider within 100 miles of Norwich able to offer their clients this nationally accredited asbestos training qualification.
Colin Wright, Managing Director of Britannia Safety & Training said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this national accreditation which means we are able to offer Asbestos Awareness and Category II training for unlicensed work. It is very much a part of our business plan to secure accreditations which will enhance our training delivery.
The accreditation follows a move earlier this year, which saw the company relocate to a purpose-built new training facility on the Wymondham Business Park, just outside Norwich.
Our recent move to our new premises will also aid us in realising this goal, as it features dedicated training zones for specialist training such as the asbestos awareness, as well as increase our course output, with three dedicated conference rooms for classroom-based learning.
The new facility was commissioned by Britannia Safety & Training to create a
We are now delivering three times more courses per month than we were last quarter and we look forward to continuing to increase this during 2012.” This latest accreditation is another cause for celebration for Britannia, which was also awarded the status of Accredited Centre for the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health earlier this year, which has enabled them to add CIEH accredited First Aid and Food Safety training to their extensive open course calendar. Emily Alger, Sales Co-ordinator, said: “We are thrilled to have been awarded these accreditations, as they allow us to offer nationally recognised and
accredited courses and increase our training output. Our move to new premises, with dedicated training zones and state-of-the-art touch-screen technology in our conference rooms, has further enhanced our services, so we can now boast that we are one of the most comprehensive training providers in East Anglia.” For more information about Britannia Safety & Training or to find out more about the courses available, please contact Emily Alger, Sales Co-ordinator on 01953 606100 and to find out more about Health & Safety and asbestos, please visit the HSE website at http://www.hse.gov.uk/asbestos/ hiddenkiller/index.htm.

East Anglian Air Ambulance Talk Advertising The East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) is offering the chance for members of the public to get up close and personal with the fundraisers of this life-saving charity. Talks and presentations are available to anyone who would like to hear how the EAAA operates and how East Anglia has benefitted from operating an air ambulance service. With Norfolk communities being wonderfully supportive towards the cause, the charity believes it is appropriate to inform the public of what we do. Having recently celebrated ten years of operating HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service) missions across East Anglia, the charity is going from strength to strength. In the past five years alone, the capability of this service has grown to include the entire county of Bedfordshire, an increase from one to two operating aircraft serving the region, the ability to include doctors on every flight 365 days of the year, as well as the recent acquisition of more capable helicopters which allows medical personnel to be trained specifically for HEMS missions. The extra room in these newer helicopters also allows for a family member to travel with minors in the event of a medical emergency. From the middle of
Dispatch January 2012
2012, the East Anglian Air Ambulance aims to be the first established air ambulance charity to be able to operate at night. This will vastly improve our service capability, especially in attending missions during the dark winter months. It may be surprising to hear that these major developments have been achieved without any Government or National Lottery funding and that the EAAA are entirely funded by the generous people of Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire. It currently costs over £4.2 million per year to keep their vital service flying. This equates to every person in the four counties that the EAAA covers paying a little over a pound a year, to keep our essential service flying. Despite these times of financial austerity, the public support received is overwhelming and unwavering. However, with aviation costs rising and our wish to further expand the service we provide, the way we create awareness for our cause has never been more important. This is why we are offering to visit businesses, organisations, schools, clubs or
any social groups that may be interested in having a speaker from the East Anglian Air Ambulance. The talks are tailored to the many different audiences that we address, but they always remain informative and insightful.
For more information about talks and presentations from East Anglian Air Ambulance representatives, please call Olly Larkin, the Norwich and North Norfolk Deputy Fundraising Co-co-ordinator for the EAAA, on 01603 489406.

We still offer that free initial consultation so call us on 01953 457173 or email Kerry@kerrybutcher.co.uk. Maybe you can also see what other services we offer, we hope we can save you money and brighten up your January.

Norfolk & Suffolk Power Flushing Any of these symptoms in my advert could indicate that your central heating system has problems from internal corrosion, rust, sludge and scale. A power flush can restore circulation and efficiency to your central heating system by removing these products. The process involves connecting a power flushing pump to the existing central heating pump valves, or across the tails of a radiator. Specialist chemicals are then pumped around the heating system to loosen and mobilise the unwanted debris.
Each radiator is then individually flushed until clean and on completion, an inhibitor is added to prevent further corrosion. The whole process is carried out with minimal disturbance and disruption. For more information or for a free no obligation quote, ring Paul on (01508) 532671 or 07879 414197. Or alternatively go to www.suffolkpowerflushing.co.uk.

There are many types of adverse weather conditions that have damaging effects on a property’s fascias and soffits.
The freezing snow and ice in these winter months can create cracks along the roof fascias which can cause the guttering and the fascia to come away from your house. The recent high winds could have loosened or blown down your Fascia or guttering system. One of the most common problems with faulty guttering is that the fascia and soffit become damp and susceptible to black mold and mildew. Not only is this a problem to your home, but a great number of health complaints can result as well. Whenever you have problems with one of either your fascia, guttering or Soffit, there is usually a problem with all three as they go hand in hand - when one sustains damage, all three will need repairing and/or replacing at the same time.
At first the damage is likely to be seen on the exterior. However, if left un-repaired, the damage could become much more extensive resulting in structural damage as well as damage to the interior of the building and/or contents. This is an ideal time to look for any signs of wind damage or winter frost damage that may need the repair or replacement of guttering, joining brackets or downpipes. It can also be a good time to check the condition of fascia boards and soffits. Call Jason of J & S Homeworks on 01953 451169 or 07747 847606 for a free no obligation quote.

A New Community Artichoke Initiative For Wymondham Rotary Club
I cant believe that another year has passed. 2011 has gone in a flash.
Norwich Foodbank - Wymondham Distribution Centre opens. The Wymondham Distribution Centre opened on Monday 12th December 2011. The Distribution Centre is based at the premises of The Baptist Church, Queen Street (off Market Square) and is open each Monday from 2.15pm to 3.45pm with the exception of Bank holidays. The aim of the Foodbank project is to provide emergency help and support to local people “in crisis” from resources made available by the local community. For families with no financial safety net, a sudden crisis such as bereavement, benefit delay, redundancy, illness or an unexpected bill can result in the inability to feed a family. The provision of three days of emergency food and taking the time to listen and provide signposting to other resources and services available in the community, can help to prevent family breakdown, housing loss, crime and mental health problems. The Distribution
Centre will be open to issue emergency food boxes to individuals and families “in crisis” by means of a voucher system. It will also be able to receive donations of food - specified non perishable foodstuffs, from members of the public. Appeals for donations of food will be made in the local area from time to time. Vouchers to enable access to this emergency help will be held by various local care professionals and agencies such as the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB). In the Foodbank’s Norwich warehouse, food boxes are filled with items compiled by nutritional experts to provide sufficient food for 3 days. The promotion of the Wymondham Distribution Centre is being arranged by the Rotary Club of Wymondham and Carousel, in conjunction with the Fairland United Reformed Church and the Wymondham Baptist Church, together with local volunteers.
It started with disaster for Artichoke as the Hackford shop flooded just before Christmas so Andrea and I spent a very cold, depressed and wet January trying to rebuild our little business. We have however had the most amazing support from all our lovely ladies and the rest of the year although frantically busy, has been a lot of fun. We had some fantastic days at The Royal Norfolk Show and The Sandringham Flower Show, we have enjoyed hosting local charity events at Hackford and made lots of new friends in Norfolk and beyond…….so A BIG THANK YOU to all our customers for their support during the past year. Looking ahead we have another very busy year planned for 2012. Our Annual sale starts on the Tuesday 3rd January with both winter and summer stock available so pop in and bag a bargain especially if you have a cruise or mid winter break planned. There are great bargains to be had
with prices as low as £10! We will also have in stock a selection of lovely bright spring stock to cheer us all up.... cosy long sleeve t shirts, floral blouses and stripy shirts, lovely warm sweatshirts and gilets as well as thick knits just in case.................... In February we will be celebrating our Hackford shop’s third birthday and hope you will join us in these celebrations. If a group of 6 or more ladies book in advance to visit the shop during the month of February you will all receive a glass of fizz and a cup cake on arrival plus a discount on anything that you buy that day. If you fancy doing something to cheer yourselves up on a dark February day come and shop til your drop! Please call Andrea on 01953 851458 to make your booking. We hope to see you very soon Sarah, Andrea and the rest of The Artichoke Team x.

dereham Stage And TV Sensation Wins Panto Lead Role Sleeping Beauty. One of Britain’s most versatile actresses is taking on the lead role in this year’s Norwich Theatre Royal panto after wowing audiences on a previous visit to the city. Hayley Tamaddon will play Sleeping Beauty in the seasonal spectacular which runs from December 14, 2011, to January 15, 2012. She was last seen on the Norwich Theatre Royal stage in Spamalot in autumn 2010 winning rave reviews for her performance and stunning singing voice - and also describing the city as one of her favourite venues on the tour. Now she is heading back to star in Norwich’s annual festive spectacular opposite an all-star cast including Kevin Sacre (Jake Dean in Hollyoaks) and evergreen actress Helen Fraser (best

known as ‘Bodybag’ Sylvia Hollamby in Bad Girls). Hayley first shot to fame playing the role of feisty Northern lass Delilah Dingle on ITV’s soap hit Emmerdale where her character was involved in a host of love, comedy and tragedy storylines. This then led to her enthralling weekly audiences of over 10 million people on Dancing On Ice eventually winning the hit TV show capturing over 80 per cent of the viewers vote - and also starring in the touring spin-off which saw her perform in front of large audiences in arenas across the country. But these two TV shows were just a small part of her versatile career as she appeared in a number of other small screen roles in a wide range of
programmes including Waterloo Road, Shameless, The Royal and Where The Heart Is. Hayley is also a distinguished stage performer and, as well as her acclaimed performance in Spamalot, she has appeared in a wide range of other theatrical hits including The Rocky Horror Show, Mamma Mia, Boogie Nights, Grease, Fame and A Chorus Line. She has also starred in several pantomimes and her incredible vocal range was showcased in a major concert at the Royal Albert Hall. Hayley is the latest top performer to join the cast of this year’s pantomime which is sponsored by Almary Green and is once again being written and directed by the city’s favourite Dame, Richard Gauntlett, who will also be donning a wide range of frocks when he co-stars in this year’s
festive production. John Bultitude, of Norwich Theatre Royal, said: “Hayley is going to bring an added dash of style and star quality to this year’s production. Her extensive on-stage experience and stunning voice will help to make Sleeping Beauty a key part of everyone’s Christmas calendar.”

Post-Natal Clinical Pilates We think of Pilates as a relatively new form of exercise; however it has been used for many years. In 1914 a gentleman called Joseph Pilates developed an exercise regime for fellow soldiers who had become ill or injured and these exercises continued to develop until Pilates’ death. Today Physiotherapy is rapidly proving the importance of muscle balance and evidence in the nineties shows that imbalances and injuries of the lumbar spine and peripheral joints can be helped with Pilate’s exercises. Amongst Physiotherapists Pilates is now used not only as a form of treatment but also as an assessment tool, looking at where imbalances occur and treating them with specific exercises. Emma is qualified in ‘Modified Pilates’, which is a safe form of Pilates for anyone with a musculoskeletal condition or injury. Postnatal Pilates can be extremely

beneficial; it increases energy levels and improves stability and strength to aid the return of the woman’s pre-pregnancy body type. It is a gentle form of exercise which can be built around the new Mum’s lifestyle to increase exercise tolerance. The breathing involved in Pilates helps to relieve the tension and stress of life with a new baby. A Pilate’s session with a qualified Physiotherapist can allow Mum a well deserved break! Emma is trained in Modified Pilates, she will take history and do a Physiotherapy assessment in your own home so that she is aware of your individual needs and can then go on to create a tailored Pilates programme postnatally. The best bit is, there is no need to find a babysitter!
CARING FOR THE ELDERLY Able Community Care
NBR Scooter Brokers
Has been providing live-in care services throughout mainland UK and the Channel Islands since 1980.
NBR Scooter Brokers is a family run business which prides itself on their commitment to their customers (existing and new!!)
Our clients, who range in age from their early twenties to centenarians, have all chosen to remain living in their own home rather than moving into a residential care home.
• My family wanted me to stay in my own home, but they were worried about me on my own in case I fell. Having live-in care in my home eliminates their worries.
Their main objective is to provide impartial advice together with a friendly and efficient service!!
When we ask our clients why they have chosen to have a live-in care package rather than move into a home where they could also have 24 hour care, we receive comments such as:
• I look forward to the same carers returning to me on a regular basis. My carers shop for the foods I like and cook them well for me.
• I can have independence in my own home. I can be spontaneous, if the sun is shining and I fancy being pushed round the park I can go. • Having 1:1 care means that no day is the same. When I was more able I could choose how to spend my days. Having live-in care means I can still do that.
Able Community Care has provided just under fifty million hours of care and we have been able to help thousands of people and their families. If you would like our information pack or want to find out more about our care provision, please give us a call on 01603 764567 or visit www.uk-care.com.
They offer the service of a free, no obligation, home demonstration for all of their products to ensure they are suitable for your needs. Whilst their core business is the supply of new mobility scooters, they also have a selection of pre-owned scooters as they offer a part exchange service.
• Adjustable beds • Bathlifts • 3 & 4 wheel walkers • Attendant and self propelled wheelchairs Apart from selling, they also offer a hire service, together with repairs, servicing and insurance work. NBR scooter brokers are accredited with Norfolk trusted traders which is organised by Norfolk County Council.
In addition to mobility scooters, they can also supply the following: • Stairlifts • Powered wheelchairs • Powerchairs • Rise & recline armchairs

For those who’ve worked hard all their lives, maintaining independence is particularly important - especially when it comes to mealtimes. Wiltshire Farm Foods is one company that’s keen to help those who can’t get out and about as much, so they can eat well and look after themselves. Established for more than 20 years, Wiltshire Farm Foods creates and delivers a delicious range of frozen meals that can be cooked in minutes. From the field, to the freezer, every detail is considered in order to offer nutrition, value, flavour and awardwinning personal service. Ingredients are selected from carefully approved suppliers and are then prepared by a

Most dishes take 8-12 minutes in the microwave or 35 minutes in the oven.
Once cooked, the meals are placed into handy trays that fit easily into the freezer, then frozen almost immediately to lock in the freshness.
As they are cooked in their trays, there is no preparation, no pots and pans, just delicious meals that you can enjoy in your own time.
Convenience is a key part of the Wiltshire Farm Foods offering. All meals can be ordered over the phone or online.
Maintaining independence has never been easier.
They’re then delivered by a friendly, local delivery driver, who is always happy to put meals away in the freezer if preferred. With the freezer stocked up, you know that a hot meal is only ever a few minutes away.

Nutrition For Generally Fit And Healthy Older Adults Eating well and being active will help you stay fit and healthy. Activity
Fibre
Research shows that remaining active can help to maintain both mental and physical health. Keeping up the activities you enjoy doing will help to maintain physical fitness and preserve muscle tissue.
Older people can suffer from constipation and bowel problems mainly due to a reduced gut motility and inactivity. To relieve this, try eating high-fibre cereal foods, fruit and vegetables. Raw bran and excessive amounts of very high-fibre foods are not the answer, though; they’re too bulky and may interfere with the absorption of certain nutrients. To help the gut work properly, it’s also important to drink plenty of fluid, approximately eight medium glasses a day.
Preserving your strength will help to maintain your independence. Remember, activity doesn’t necessarily mean joining an exercise class. Gardening, walking to the shops and housework can all count as types of activity too.
use of certain drugs - together with a poor dietary intake - may be causal factors. Make sure your iron intake is sufficient by eating red meat and foods from non-meat sources (such as fortified cereals, dried fruit, pulses and green leafy vegetables) every day. Absorption of iron from a meal containing non-meat sources is maximised by consuming foods rich in vitamin C at the same time (such as a glass of fruit juice, fresh fruit or vegetables). Zinc
Energy
Fluid
Energy requirements can decline with age, particularly if physical activity is limited, but the need for protein, vitamins and minerals remains the same. It’s vital that food choices are nutritionally dense, which means you still need to eat a variety of foods to get all the vitamins and minerals you need, but with fewer calories. If you’re overweight or obese, it’s even more important to be calorie conscious.
Dehydration can make people feel drowsy or confused, it’s important to drink, even if this means extra trips to the toilet.
Fat Advice to restrict fat intake, particularly cutting saturated fat to improve heart health, remains true for older people who are fit and well. A dietary survey of older people showed most eat too much saturated fat. Above the age of 75, fat restriction is less likely to be beneficial, and isn’t appropriate if the person is frail, has suffered weight loss or has a very small appetite. In fact, in these situations additional fat may be used to increase the calories in meals and snacks to aid weight gain.
The risk of dehydration can be higher in older people because their kidneys don’t function as efficiently as those of younger people. Older people are also not as sensitive to the feeling of thirst. Fluid intake doesn’t just mean water - it can also include such drinks as tea, coffee, fruit juice and squash.
Zinc is needed for a healthy immune system and to support the healing of wounds including pressure ulcers. Rich sources include meat, pulses, wholemeal bread and shellfish. Calcium and vitamin D Adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D may help to slow the rate of calcium loss from bones, which starts at the age of 30 and accelerates considerably in later years. Calcium-rich foods (milk and dairy
foods) should be eaten every day. Vitamin D comes mostly from exposing skin to sunlight, although some foods such as oily fish and fortified spreads and breakfast cereals contain vitamin D. As you get older it’s advisable to take a vitamin D supplement, as your body isn’t able to get enough from the diet and British weather alone. Vitamin C Older people may have low vitamin C intakes if not consuming enough fruit and vegetables. This may be because crisp fruit and vegetables are often avoided if their teeth are in poor condition or if they have badly fitting dentures. Regular check-ups with the dentist can help to ensure that teeth remain healthy, enabling older people to continue to enjoy a variety of foods that will help maintain overall health.
Sugar Generally fit and healthy older people should limit foods and drinks that are rich in sugar, as it can impair dental health and contribute to weight gain when energy intake is too high. But for people who have a poor appetite, or who have lost weight, sugar-rich foods can be a useful source of calories. Iron Anaemia is common in older adults. Poor absorption of iron, due to changes in the gastrointestinal tract, blood loss and the
