Rosedale Encourages The Green Dragon Families To Log On And Remember Success of charity day.

A big thank-you to all our customers, who helped us raise nearly £1500 on the day for Star Throwers & Street Child of Sierra Leone.

A South Norfolk funeral home is encouraging people to share treasured memories by creating online tributes to their loved ones. As well as words, the site is also designed to incorporate images, videos and music, with an option for visitors to make online donations to a favourite charity.

It was the first funeral director in Norfolk to offer fair trade funerals and has recently teamed up with Banham Zoo to offer heavy horse drawn farm carts, as an alternative to a traditional hearse.

“Much Loved is a new way of enabling people, who may live far apart, to come together and share their memories of someone special - and remarkably it’s free,” said Rosedale’s Anne Beckett-Allen. “As well as uploading tributes, you can even include a video of the funeral, enabling those who weren’t able to be

On Yer Bike, Wymondham! On Saturday 17th September the penultimate stage of the Tour of Britain cycle race takes place across Norfolk and a bunch of world-class cyclists will dash through the market place in Wymondham. In doing so, they will signal the start of the Wymondham Approach, a slightly more sedate cycle event, which is aimed at everyone. Everyone who lives in Wymondham and works in Norwich that is. The Wymondham Approach is an invitation to Wymondham commuters to try cycling to work instead of driving. The project will culminate in a ‘mass‐commute’ between Wymondham Market Place and the Forum in Norwich on Friday 23rd September. The Wymondham Approach is being organised by architects Matt Wood and Tom FeneleyPlackett of Wymondham practice Lucas Hickman Smith, and Norwich‐based artists Townley and Bradby. As part of this year’s Norfolk and Norwich Festival, Townley and Bradby staged The Bowthorpe Experiment – a cycle‐tour to a ‘future‐Norwich’ in which the bike had displaced the private car and had become the main way of getting about. ‘The Bowthorpe Experiment was an art‐piece’ explains Lawrence Bradby, ‘it presented a future that was desirable but unachievable. So it was great when Matt got in touch. He told us he’d been on the tour and wanted

to organise a follow‐up event that was a bit more practical.’ Both of the Wymondham architects are committed to eco‐design and sustainable growth. They are also keen cyclists. ‘Tom cycles to work from Norwich three or four times a week,’ says Matt Wood ‘And at the start of the year I started using my bike to get to meetings in the city, rather than driving in. I do it to get some exercise, which I find hard to fit into my working week otherwise, but it’s also saving me money. And it’s reducing my carbon footprint.’ This triple‐whammy of benefits – exercise, economy, environment – is the main idea behind the Wymondham Approach, say the organisers, as they lay down a challenge to Wymondham residents: ‘On yer’ bike!’ Further Information 1) The ‘mass‐commute’ will leave Wymondham Market Place at 8.00 on Friday 23 September, and call in at Waitrose (on Norwich Road) before heading into Norwich. The route will follow the

old A11, passing through Hethersett and Cringleford, then following Newmarket Road into the city‐centre. It will arrive at the Forum around 9.00. The return journey will leave the Forum at 5.45pm. Eight miles of the ten mile route are on designated cycle paths, mostly off the carriageway. 2) The official launch of the Wymondham Approach will be a ‘bike stall’ outside Wymondham Library on Saturday 17 September, coinciding with the Tour of Britain and a Farmers Market. The organisers will be on hand to answer questions and give advice about cycling into Norwich. 3) The event is being supported by Howards Cycles on Back Lane in Wymondham, who will be offering free bicycle ‘health‐check’ to anyone thinking about taking part in the mass‐commute. 4) More information is available at www.thewymondhamapproachwordpress.com Press information call Lawrence Bradby 07544 256754

Get Your Fascias And Gutters Cleaned And Inspected Ready For Autumn Isn’t prevention so much better than cure? Just because you are not faced with the problem every day does not mean that the risk is not there. Throughout the year they are exposed to all kinds of damaging elements. Gutter maintenance is something homeowners tend to think about only after a problem occurs. They may soon discover that poorly functioning rain gutters can cause many problems, including foundation erosion, basement leaks and rotten fascia boards. Now is a good time to have your home’s gutter system checked for damages from ice and snow last winter, heavy rains or clogged debris. You’d be amazed at some of the things we find causing blocked up guttering. All sorts of heavy, sticky or odd shaped items can get clogged in the channels of guttering or wedged in down pipes.

We’ve seen the lot from piles of soggy leaves, debris left by birds, tennis balls or broken roof tiles to plants and weeds actually growing in the channels themselves. If any of this applies to you, it may well be time for an inspection and clean.

Take action now. Go outside, walk right around your home and look very carefully at your gutters:

Seriously neglected gutters often have weeds growing in them, adding to the problem. Water constantly overflowing from blocked gutters damages bricks and mortar and can cause extensive damp on the outside and mould on the inside of your house as it is absorbed by the bricks, making even the most beautiful of homes appear unsightly.

• Can you see any pools of water or signs of water damage?

• Does anything seem wrong? • Are there any bulges or cracks?

• Is any part of your guttering discoloured? The next time it rains, go outside with your umbrella and watch your gutters in action.

Homes & Gardens Supreme Bathrooms Water Saving, take a SHOWER or a BATH? In response to the official drought in East Anglia, environment secretary Caroline Spelmen has already said that everyone should take a shower rather than a bath to save water. “We are doing all we can to reduce impact on agriculture and wildlife, but everyone can play their part” she said. She added “Households know how to use less water and everyone can do their bit to use water more wisely, not only through the summer but throughout the year.” Supreme Bathrooms have looked at their products in mind and have welcomed the call to use showers rather than baths. Its been acknowledged for sometime that showers are far more economical than

20 Dispatch September 2011

baths in terms of water use with a five minute shower using about a third of the water required for a bath. This can save 50 litres of water every time. With our new digital showers which have an eco setting to save water without compromising the quality of the shower and our eco toilet cisterns which will also save water and money, Supreme Bathrooms are getting ahead of the game. Taking a bath out and installing a quality British made shower enclosure with clear shield glass to prevent lime scale build up and an eco digital shower will not only save water and money, but it will also transform your bathroom into a modern and spacious room for you to enjoy.

Plus the use of wetwall panels instead of tiles within the shower will also save time and money when the common problem of mildew on grout starts to show. And don’t forget at Supreme Bathrooms we offer our customers the best sourced products from across Europe (Italy, Spain) and more importantly from Great Britain. Quality products at competitive prices is a key selling point for Supreme Bathrooms but more importantly we offer and back the products up with a wealth of experience, unlimited advice and a follow on customer service second to none. Homes & Gardens Garden Landscaping In 4D Many gardens created by their owners follow a traditional two-dimensional style with a square section of lawn and planting borders around the perimeter. This style often does not show the full potential of the garden and offers little intrigue or interest. Other aspects of the garden should be considered to maximise appeal, for example, terraced lawns, raised beds and sunken seating areas to create a three-dimensional feel. Similarly touch, sound and fragrance should also be included within the plan to add the fourth dimension. Examples of this would be the coolness of natural stone paving and cobble-setts under bare feet, the trickle of water over smooth pebbles, the swish of bamboos in a gentle breeze and the delicate fragrance of honeysuckle filling the air to introduce a feeling of well-being.

TUITION Socatots® Is the world’s first soccer specific physical play programme for children from six months to school age. Aimed at giving children their very first start with the ball. SOCATOTS® was developed by Simon Clifford and is a truly unique programme.

Attending SOCATOTS® classes has enormous benefits for young children and their parents, some of which are listed below:

SOCATOTS® uses soccer or football as our medium and of course a child attending SOCATOTS® will greatly develop their skills in this area, however SOCATOTS® is about a great deal more than just developing a child’s affinity and control with the ball, it is about giving them a well-rounded start in their physical, social and educational development and developing the ‘whole child’.

• Improvement of balance and co-ordination, as well as posture • Development of cognitive skills • Increased self confidence • Improved social skills

The benefits of taking part in SOCATOTS® go far beyond just the physical and research shows that children who are physically active from a young age are more likely to concentrate better in the classroom. Add this to SOCATOTS® focus on educational and social development as well as physical and soccer specific skills and you can see that SOCATOTS® really does give a great start to children. SOCATOTS® sessions

feature full parental participation and the emphasis is always on fun and structured play and development throughout each of the 3 SOCATOTS® phases. For further information contact Jo on 07821 030106 or visit www.socatots.com/Norwich

Keep Your Tummy Flat

Tandem Skydive For Charity Gemma Snelling, 19, is a recently qualified hairdresser who works in Wymondham in Marola’s hair salon has decided to do something for charity. After much thought of what she would like to do and hoping to raise as much money as possible, she decided to do a tandem skydive from 10,000 feet. Although she has never done anything like this before and has never been a passenger on an aircraft.

Gemma is looking for as many sponsors as possible, so if anybody out there is willing to help please contact Marola’s 01953 602847 or just call in the shop. All donations will be much appreciated.

Good ideas for a flat tummy, not just for this week/month but for life... Build some sound foundation. Drink at least six to eight glasses of water or cups of herbal tea throughout the day. Enjoy at least five potions of fruit and vegetables each day. If you have a sweet tooth, replace processed sugary snack foods with fruit or have a couple of pieces of a good quality dark chocolate in the evening or with your afternoon cup of green tea. Avoid adding salt to your food as it will absorb excess water just when you want to flush it out. Don’t rush your food.

Eating slowly and in a relaxed frame of mind means you’ll digest the food more effectively and prevent bloating or wind. Keep breakfast simple and healthy. During the week have porridge with honey or yoghurt or yoghurt with fresh fruit. Stay clear of bread and enjoy a big soup or salad for lunch. At dinner, replace potatoes with another type of vegetable, include lean protein and lots of fresh vegetables. Include beans at least twice a week. By Mick Glynn Of MG Fitness

CARING FOR THE ELDERLY Top Tips For Better Ageing From Age UK We know it’s not just about living longer it’s about living healthily and happily for longer. Follow our top tips for ageing better together. Exercise You don’t have to join an exercise class or the gym – things like gardening, playing tennis or bowls, or going for a brisk walk can be just as effective. Just make sure you check with your doctor if you have a condition or haven’t exercised in a while. Eat a healthy diet Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables – aim for five portions a day. Too much salt increases your risk of high blood pressure and stroke. Check food labels for the salt content, particularly in processed meats, savoury snacks, biscuits, bacon, soups and ready meals. Too much saturated fat raises cholesterol and increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. Foods high in saturated fat include biscuits, cakes, pastries, sausages, meat pies, fatty meat and cheese. Don’t drink too much alcohol.

Know how many units you are drinking, and speak to your GP if you find yourself regularly having a drink to help you cope. Don’t smoke It’s never too late to feel the benefits of giving up smoking. Ask your GP or pharmacist about local one-to-one or group support and anti-smoking medication. Engage socially with others Why not volunteer with Age UK? It doesn’t how much or little time you have – with more than 170 local Age UKs, as well as around 500 shops, you can get involved in your local community and meet new people. Age UK volunteers do everything from gardening and driving to visiting people living alone. You could be serving customers and helping to dress

the window in one of our shops. Or you could work behind the scenes sorting through donations or helping with basic administration. We also welcome book or antique enthusiasts in our shops to help price donations. With your help we can deliver more services to people in later life. Have a positive attitude about ageing Research shows that older people who have a positive attitude to ageing, and who work with the changes it brings, tend to have better health and live longer than those who see only the negatives. Devoting time to old friends and favourite hobbies is important – but remember to explore new interests too. It’s easy to meet new friends, try new activities or share something you enjoy in your local area. Age UK supports more than 85 Friendship

Centres across England and works with a network of 600 independent forums of older people. Get regular health checkups Speak to your GP if there is a family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis or glaucoma. This helps identify any problems before symptoms arise. Don’t ignore invitations for a flu jab or cancer screening. NHS screening programmes for breast, bowel and cervical cancer are there to pick up problems at an early stage. Protect your eyes Take advantage of free NHS sight tests if you’re eligible. Have your eyes checked every two years or annually if you are aged 70 or over.

Sat Nav Safety Tips to get the most out of your sat nav. 2. Trust your eyes not the sat nav People have been marooned in fords, driven into rivers and down railways because their sat nav told them to.

4. Don’t block your view of the road The sat nav should be in your line of sight. You don’t want to have to look down or turn your head a long way, but it should not block your view of the road.

If the road looks wrong, don’t take it. 1. You’re driving, not the sat nav You can’t blame the sat nav if you commit an offence or have an accident. It’s your fault.

3. Watch the road not the sat nav A sat nav can give all sorts of information about where you are going, much of which you don’t need.

5. Use all of the features On a complicated, busy roundabout, it is unwise to take your eyes off the road to look at the sat nav, and much better to receive spoken instructions.

6. Update the sat nav regularly It needs to know about new roads, new traffic systems and generally keep itself up to date. 7. Thieves like sat navs too If it’s detachable, always take it out when you leave the car. Mounts or suction cap marks also attract thieves as they know that drivers who remove the sat nav from the window tend to leave it in the car.
