New Display At Heritage Museum

Attleborough Sainsbury’s

On show at the Wymondham Heritage Museum is a specially created display telling the story of the Kett Rebellion of 1549.

The presentation took place outside their Charity Shop in Wymondham, along with shop volunteers Jutta and Ken Mckenzie Smith. The cheque was presented by Karen Watts, Store Manager and colleagues Linda Lemon and Chris Smith, all three of which participated in a sponsored walk from Knettishall Heath to Cromer with other colleagues from the store earlier this year.

The display takes the form of 19 panels and one quilt, each panel recording an event from the rebellion starting with the protest in Wymondham to the Battle of Dussindale and the execution of Robert and William Kett.

The museum is open Monday to Saturday 10 am to 4pm.

The panels were created by a number of groups from the area using a wide range of arts and craft skills ranging from embroidery, collage, modelling to 21st century technology. Tutors from South Norfolk Adult Education were involved and the humour, imagination and skill has to be seen. Find the “Rude Boy”, see the “Swinging Doves!”

If you just want to see the Kett Display arrive after 3pm and entry is £1.00.

It is intended that the display will be available to other groups and organisation to borrow, therefore you need to visit the museum to see how you might be able to use the display for any event based on the Kett Rebellion or how different skills can be used to tell a story.

...helped boost funds for the Wymondham based charity StarThrowers by presenting a cheque for £2500.00 to Steven Ho the charities Manager.

The walk helped raise £1000.00 of the years total by colleague sponsorship across the store and from family and friends. The rest of the money was raised from the sale of StarThrowers merchandise in the store, trolley raffles and kind donations from customers and colleagues. The money will continue to fund

the complementary services offered at the care centre. Throughout the year grocery donations of tea & coffee have also been sent to the charity for use at various coffee mornings by the store and many staff have baked cakes for events such as their recent strawberry tea afternoon to help raise money at the centre. Sainsbury’s would like to thank all customers and colleagues for their support during 2012/2013. The Attleborough branch has chosen Attleborough First Responders as the next great cause they will be getting behind this year and will support the charity throughout the year up until June 2014.

Bears Extend Paw Of Comfort To Bereaved Children Two Hundred Extra Special Teddy Bears have arrived in the County - and are now on standby to comfort bereaved children. The memory bears have been bought by Rosedale Funeral Home, which has branches throughout South Norfolk and North Suffolk, to provide extra support to youngsters who have lost a loved one. Rosedale’s Anne Beckett-Allen, a trustee of Norfolk’s child bereavement charity Nelson’s Journey, said that each bear had a secret zipped compartment, where children could tuck away a memento or small keepsake to remind them of the person who had died. “Children can sometimes get overlooked at a time of bereavement and we feel it’s important that they are supported through their grief and helped to understand what’s happened. Last year we bought a few dozen bears and the feedback was so

incredible that we felt we needed to order more,” said Anne Beckett-Allen. Anne Beckett-Allen said that as a family-run business they were committed to doing as much as possible to support bereaved children and their families.

community involvement. Established in Diss nine years ago, it has branches in Beccles, Bungay, Wymondham, Attleborough and Halesworth. www.rosedalefuneralhome.co.uk

“We know only too well the heartbreak children often experience when someone close to them dies and we hope that these bears will help ease their pain.” And adults are benefiting too. Among the recipients of the first bears were local parents who had lost babies. “The bears have been of great comfort to those who have miscarried or whose babies have

Clearing Out - A Positive Step To Moving On After a funeral, going through your loved ones belongings and trying to decide what do with the items presents a significant challenge and is by far one of the hardest parts of the journey through bereavement. There are cupboards, drawers and wardrobes to tackle, as well as the garage, the loft and the pile of papers that may have accumulated since the death occurred.

Consider family members and friends who may enjoy a special item and think about what items could be included in a memorial or become a family heirloom.

With the longer days of summer upon us, it might be the right time to start tackling some of these tasks.

Take your time, do not let yourself be overwhelmed and cherish the memories. If you’re not ready to go through the belongings, don’t - wait until you are ready.

For many, it is so overwhelming that it is easier to just leave everything as is, for others it is the sad realisation that their loved one is not returning and that with the exception of specific items that may have been itemised in the will, their possessions are now yours. There is no right or wrong time to do this, but once probate or letters of administration have been granted, it is a personal decision of what works best for you. Some people do find that it helps to take time, to hold things, to recall and savour memories and decide which items to keep and which need to be donated to charity shops or discarded. Some people are forced by circumstances to carry out these tasks quickly whilst for others; an immediate reaction to bereavement can be to quickly clean out everything. The thought behind this approach is that you will feel better if you do not see the personal belongings. The real truth is that most will not feel better; in fact as time passes, some may regret clearing out and giving away the items so quickly. The best way to get started is to tackle one corner, one drawer or one file at a time. Create four piles; the save pile, the donation pile, the rubbish pile and the “not-sure what I want to do with” pile. Once you start, you will find that you will develop both satisfaction in accomplishing the task and fond memories reminiscing. If it is overwhelming, take a few items to a different room and go through them at your leisure.

August 2013

You may wish to create a memory box of possessions that you wish to keep, that you can open when you wish to remember. This could include photographs, certificates, medals, cards and letters, newspaper cuttings, the death announcement, the Order of Service from the funeral, a handkerchief, glasses or other personal items. The staff at Rosedale Funeral Home recognise the value that memory boxes can have and we have a beautiful selection available for both adults and children. They are given completely free of charge and without obligation, no matter how long ago the person died or which funeral director you used. If you would like to select a memory box, just give us a ring or send us an email and we will arrange for you to come in and choose an appropriate design. Rosedale Funeral Home also runs a Bereavement Support Group held in Wymondham on the first and third Thursday of every month. Window Geeks “Replacing your steamed-up windows doesn’t mean you have to replace the whole window…Save thousands by changing only the glass”… It can be stressful when things break or go wrong, especially when it seems the only solution comes at great expense. Unexpected bills can hit households very hard at a time when every penny counts and it means that thousands of homeowners put off fixing their windows or doors for fear of the high costs usually associated with these types of products... Well now you can relax…because WindowGeeks, a national window, door and conservatory repair specialist, has expanded into Norwich and will service the whole of the Norfolk region, giving local home owners access to real money-saving options; one that can reduce what could be an alarming bill in the thousands to a far more acceptable one in the low hundreds - and in most cases even lower than that. The fact is that the average single repair or replacement undertaken by WindowGeeks, which includes locks, handles and hinges, as well as the usual replacement of steamed-up double glazed units is less

August 2013

than £60...not surprising really when you consider that the replacement of a single steamed-up double glazed window starts from as low as £30 including VAT and fitting…which is why, at this point, many people take the opportunity to upgrade to energy efficient double glazed units. Our new local and experienced team, headed up by Steve Olley, join all of our other skilled craftsmen and women throughout the UK, each providing a professional and cost effective service to 1,000s of customers from Plymouth in the Southwest, through Norwich in the East, up to Preston in the North and all points in-between… “Lots of people have problems with their windows,” says Steve, “They get steamed-up and won’t clear, or the locks stick or the handles get loose…and it becomes even more of a problem at this time of year when cold draughts get through...but what’s really surprising is that most people don’t realise that all of these problems can be fixed quickly and without spending a fortune or having to

sell one or more of their children, unless they want to of course”… WindowGeeks has over 38 years’ experience in the glazing industry and it’s sad to think that there are still quite a few traditional window companies that either refuse or just don’t want to carryout repairs…now were not saying that all double glazing companies don’t carry out repairs, many do, and do a great job, but Steve adds, “In most cases they’re not really interested in the smaller jobs and that’s what’s so great about WindowGeeks, we offer a real cost-effective solution, which makes it a very easy decision for our customers to choose us...there’s no pressure sales from us because there’s no viable alternative, unless, that is, you want to spend 10, 20 or even 100 times more on replacing all your double glazing!” While the cost savings might be the biggest draw, there’s another reason customers should choose WindowGeeks and one that has inevitably convinced many customers throughout the UK to use us;

“It’s all about honesty and trust,” says Steve. “There’s integrity in what WindowGeeks do and that’s very important to me, we tell the truth, only charge for what needs doing and we always honour our promises…We run a very successful and ethical business based on good old fashioned customer service backed up with top quality products and support from our head office.” WindowGeeks provides free quotations with; • No call out charges • No credit card charges • No deposits • No minimum order values, • No high pressure sales men or women • No hidden extras • 10 year guarantee on all glazed products All our quotes include VAT and Fitting Call now for a FREE QUOTE on 0800 61 22 943 or visit us at www.windowgeeks.co.uk

The weather is really feeling like summer and hopefully you have either just had or are looking forward to a nice summer break away.

Are you self employed or do you need to complete a tax return this year? If so you may already have had to pay an amount due on account or maybe this is your first year and you are not sure what you need to do. The answer – make an appointment to see us here at KBA. Not only can we help you to estimate the amount of tax you need to pay, we can also reduce your payments on account if you are paying too much on account. Of course you are paying too little, we can work out how much you should be paying to avoid any additional interest being charged. Of course as well as this it would be nice to get your books up to date so that you don’t have any nasty surprises at the last minute. The amount of capital allowances allowed changed in 2013 which affects most people’s tax calculations.

Something else we can help you with if you wished. Of course we don’t just complete tax returns here at KBA, there is much more that we can offer including limited company accounts, payroll including submitting the RTI as well as some less well known items like debt chasing. Did you know that we can take on a business or organisation that owe you money and not only can we write to them and chase the debt for you, we can also set up a claim via the court service called money claim online. We will organise a claim for you including applying for judgement and calling in the bailiff if necessary. So don’t spend the summer inside worrying about your tax return, bookkeeping or those debts that you are owed. Instead make one call to KBA and let us take care of things for you. 01953 457173 or email: Kerry@kerrybutcher.co.uk. We look forward to hearing from you.

Cleaning Up After Teenagers The essential pizza and coke removal guide! The kids are home for the holidays and suddenly there are piles of teenagers lounging about all over your lovely clean house, spilling their pizza on the sofa and knocking over cans of coke on the carpet.

prevention treatment applied to your curtains and carpets, ServiceMaster Clean’s very own technical wizard Ian McCormack is here with a guide to removing the most common teenage holiday stains.

Beginning to wish the holidays away already? Never fear, for those of you who haven’t already had a stain

(Note: please pre-test all treatments on an inconspicuous place first ie the back of your curtains or sofa) 1. Coke

Follow us @Dispatch_Mag

August 2013

Actually coke is very simple to remove. It’s water based so simply dab with a clean damp white cloth until there is no further transfer from stain to cloth. Then apply a mixture of soap flakes diluted in warm water and finally rinse with clean water.

2. Pizza Teenagers are notoriously easily distracted, pizza, mouth, gaming... whoops! The treatment method for tomato stains is similar to coke but you may need a little extra help to deal with any extra oily toppings. As above. Start by dabbing the affected area with a clean damp white cloth until there is no further transfer from stain to cloth. Then apply a mixture of soap flakes diluted in warm water and finally rinse with clean water. Keep drying as you go all the way through the treatment. If the stain is oily (ie pepperoni/olive/tuna) start the process above but use vodka instead of water in your clean damp white cloth, then apply a weak solution of soap flakes and finally rinse as above.

Keep drying as you can all the way through the treatment.

3. Chocolate

On bigger spills (ie the whole bottle instead of just a can) use a hair dryer in between applications to keep it dry.

Use Ian’s tried and tested method to remove chocolate and you’re practically a scientist. Harness the

power of enzymes to eat away the chocolate for you! Pop out and buy a small box of biological washing powder (must be fresh). Mix up a weak solution of hand hot water and powder, apply to the stain, leave damp and hey presto, the enzymes will chomp away on the chocolate until it’s gone! It doesn’t have to be an expensive brand; supermarket own will work just as well. 4. Mud Has mummy’s little David Beckham walked mud in across the new carpet? Fear not; Ian says the key is to let the mud dry before attempting to remove the marks. Once the mud is completely dry just vacuum away, if any stubborn marks remain, apply soap flakes (around a teaspoonful to a mug of warm water) and gently dab. Rinse with water.

ShowTime! Wayland Agricultural Show will celebrate its 140th year. The Wayland Agricultural Show, one of the longest running traditional agricultural shows in the UK, celebrates its 140th year when it returns on Sunday 4th August 2013. After an enormous amount of support from the local community, the show is returning this year to Watton with a jam-packed lineup of entertainment for all the family, and to raise funds for local charities and community projects. Graham Shingfield, chairman of the Wayland Agricultural Show says: “We are relieved that the Wayland Agricultural Show is able to take place, and have been overwhelmed with the support we have received from our sponsors, members, traders and exhibitors. The letters and emails of support expressing how much the show means to people has been a great comfort to us and I would like to thank everyone who has been so kind. He added: “Whilst it was previously reported that a donation from Anglian Water had ‘Saved the Wayland Show’ the truth is that our finances are still very marginal. Anglian

Water has indicated that they may be willing to make donations to local good causes on our behalf, but to date we have been unable to agree whether this will happen or not. Never-the-less we are looking forward to our 140th show and we are planning a great day out for everyone on August 4th.” The Main Ring will feature headline appearances from James Dylan International Motorcycle Stunt Show and Merion Owen’s Quack Pack, an international known duck herding troop, alongside the chance to see all the traditional livestock competitions. Even more traditional country entertainment will be provided by Mid Norfolk Gun Dogs, West Norfolk Hunt Hounds and Horkesley Park Suffolk Punches. Keep an eye out for the Lifestyle, Horticulture, Fur and Feather and Tastes of Norfolk Marquees alongside various trade stalls and food outlets which will make it an unforgettable day out. The Wayland Show is also pleased to welcome local star of Bargain Hunt and Flog it! Phillip Allwood who will be giving visitors the chance to get a valuation on their items, and the scarecrow competition is a chance for children to express themselves by creating

scarecrows that are inspired by nursery rhyme characters. In addition there will be fairground rides, Punch & Judy and also Polly’s Parrot Road show to keep them all entertained. There will also be a prize giving for the Wayland Agricultural Society Young Achiever Award. The award is designed to recognise outstanding dedication and contribution to agriculture, horticulture, wildlife or any other rural related sector or industry. The Gooderstone Water Gardens, located in West Norfolk near to Swaffham, consists of six acres of garden with: • A natural trout stream • Four ponds • Waterways • Thirteen bridges • Mature trees & shrubs • Colourful borders • Nature trail • Kingfisher hide • Grass paths • Tearoom & Plant Sales Billy Knights, a retired farmer began designing and creating the Water Gardens in 1970 in his 70th year. The site was a damp meadow, too wet for cattle to graze. Mr Knights’ son jokingly suggested he should have a water garden, which prompted him to begin work. He soon had machines digging out the ponds and waterways. He worked on his garden with love and enthusiasm until he died aged 93. Both Billy and his wife Florence loved their gardens and sharing them with others for over 20 years. With this in mind and as a tribute to her parents Coral Hoyos

began restoration in April 2002. Having been unattended and closed for five years, the Gardens had become quite derelict. However they were re-opened again in June 2003, with a new car park, refurbished tearoom / gallery, a toilet for disabled people and an 8 acre nature trail. To help you find your way round, the bridges are numbered and when you have walked enough rest on one of the many benches provided, or perhaps visit the tearoom in the south-east corner where you can enjoy a relaxing cup of freshly brewed tea or coffee, soft drinks, ice-creams and delicious home made cakes. Gardening Tips For August This month is really just a repeat of July - keep watering early morning or during the evening. Dead head flowering plants regularly to encourage the second/third flush of blooms and keep tying in shoots of climbing plants as they grow. Apart from sharing some of our helpful gardening hints and seasonal tips, we will also try to demystify some of the issues which often puzzle our fellow gardeners. As with many things in life, experts try to baffle most of us with complicated or scientific names and the area of gardening is no exception. So we thought about writing about the quirks of nature that can happen to plants. Proliferation is known to affect all types of roses. This is when a new bud along with its unfurling leaves will grow through the centre of a rose that is already in full bloom. While the exact cause is still unknown, this occurrence is often seen during cold weather in the spring and occurs on the first emergence of flowers. Proliferation is unpredictable and spontaneous. It can happen one year and not the next. Not all the flowers of a plant will be affected; only a few or as many as half of the flowers will have the mutation. It isn’t harmful and

August 2013

will not cause the blooms to die, but the affected flowers should be removed, to conserve the plant’s energy. A rose Sport is a genetic mutation where the plant suddenly has a flower which is different to the normal colour or characteristics of the parent plant. There are several reasons why you can get a new flower colour. The most common cause is a plant mutation which then changes the growth habit or flower colour of the parent plant. These new shoots are known as ‘Sports’, they are usually stable and can be propagated. Whilst, some sports are stable, others not, reverting back to the parent. A famous sport and reversion is the red ‘Rosa Gallica officinalis’ aka ‘Apothecary’s Rose’ that sports the striped ‘Rosa Mundi’, then often it reverts back. It is not unusual to see both roses on the same plant. Reversion can happen amongst trees, shrubs and perennials. Most commonly seen when a variegated plant or one with coloured leaves, for example, golden leaved forms, produce plain green leaved

shoots. These must be removed from where they arise otherwise the whole plant will soon “revert” to the common green form. This is because the green form is the dominant variety. Interestingly, a coloured or variegated leaved form will tend to be varyingly less vigorous and a little more prone to extreme conditions. Our final weird condition is Fasciation where flowers and/or stems can fuse together and become flattened. This isn’t harmful to the plant and can be decorative. Not all strange growths are caused by the plants themselves. There

are many curls, twists and galls (lumps and bumps), that are caused by little grubs which are the progeny of various mites, flies and wasps. Some of these ‘growths’ are coloured adding an extra interest or have a covering of soft bristles. Whatever plants are doing in your garden, whether by accident or intent, maintaining them is crucial this month. Typically a time for holidays and relaxation, forgetting the usual chores or putting them off could lead to a lot of work later. Simon White & Peter Chinnery of Peter Beales Roses.

Pilates Tuition Pilates is an effective exercise method designed to balance, strengthen, stretch and tone the body. It is suitable for most people, although group classes are not appropriate for everyone. Often in the case of injury or back pain private sessions are the safest and most effective way to start. My Beginners classes are small and provide an introduction to the Pilates Method, working progressively to learn the basic Pilates principles over the 7 week course. I provide mats and any other equipment required, and I encourage all class participants to try to do some home practice. I run Beginners, Improvers and Level 1 classes at various venues in Norwich and Wymondham from Tuesday to Thursday.

I hold my private sessions at The Stables Pilates Studio at the Global Clinic in Colney, these cost £35 for a one hour session. I have trained with Body Control Pilates and The Contrology Pilates Method Studio, covering basic matwork, classical matwork, reformer and cadillac repertoire. I am a level 3 Pilates teacher with the Register of Exercise Professionals. Ten Tips To Help You To A Better Care Service Searching for the care service that is right for you is not an easy task. There are dozens of leaflets, websites and telephone numbers all with information that discusses aspects of the care system in the UK. This article is meant to be a general information guide covering the main factors of interest to anyone who is seeking such information. 1. Consider care options before you actually need a care service. Look at local care agencies and residential care homes and request a brochure from those you may possibly be interested in. 2. Look at your financial situation and find out if you would be able to claim any government help via your local authority/NHS/other state funding. You would be able to claim the Attendance Allowance (non income based) if your care needs fulfil the criteria, obtain an application form from your local Department of Social Security and have a look. 3. If you have a large amount of savings and would not be eligible to claim any financial help other than the Attendance Allowance, contact a financial advisor who is CF8 qualified to advise you if an Immediate Care Plan is a good product for your situation. 4. If you are “cash poor” and “house rich” and wish to be cared for in your own home, take advice re equity release. Age UK offices are a good organisation to contact in the first instance. Age UK telephone number will be in your local phone book. 5. If you are considering a care home and intend to sell your home to pay for your care, contact a CF8 qualified financial advisor/Age UK office for further help and information re protecting your financial position. 6. If you decide on a care home, visit at least three. There are many questions you should consider asking each care home and if you call Able Community Care on 01603 764567 or email to Ablemg@aol.com and request a free “care home - questions to ask sheet” we will be happy to send one to you. 7. If considering care at home, contact at least two care organisations to

August 2013

come and meet with you and your family/advocate. There are questions you should ask of each home care organisation before making a judgement as to which company to use. If you call Able Community Care on 01603 764567 or email to Ablemg@aol.com and request a free “home care - questions to ask sheet” we will be happy to send one to you. 8. If you have a particular health problem and wish to remain as independent as is possible ask your health centre for access to the specialist nurse. The specialist nurse system does not apply to all illnesses and conditions but the following may be available: Parkinson’s Specialist Nurse, Admiral Nurse (Alzheimer’s Disease), MS Specialist Nurse, Continence Specialist Nurse, and Palliative Care Nurse. 9. Paying a local person “cash in hand” to help you with your care needs could lead to you being designated as an employer and your carer as being your employee. This may mean compliance with the legal, regulatory system for employer/employee so seek advice. The Citizens Advice Bureau would be one organisation who could advise you relevant to your personal circumstances. 10. Information in hand before a crisis keeps you in control and allows you to make considered decisions. Many people who need care as a result of an unexpected crisis situation make the wrong decision for themselves or a family member and regret it later. Make your wishes known to your family and friends so they can help you to achieve the choice of where and how you wish to be cared for. Article by Angela Gifford MD, Able Community Care Ltd. MOTORING REVIEW 23

Vauxhall Mokka Tech Line 1.6 16v By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist Twitter: @carwriteups Visit: www.carwriteups.co.uk

THE VAUXHALL MOKKA mixes functionality with a comfortable elevated seating position. It’s the Griffin-badged company’s answer to the Nissan Juke or the Skoda Yeti, and power to the small Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) is provided by three efficient engines, all equipped with fuel saving Start/Stop technology. The petrol version comprises a 1.6-litre engine or a 1.4-litre Turbo and there is a 1.7-litre CDTI diesel. I drove the 113bhp 1.6 petrol Mokka; it has moderate pulling power, but, working your way through the five speed gearbox, it eventually spins up to a decent speed. It also provides a smooth and grippy ride. Looks-wise the Mokka is beefy and incorporates Vauxhall’s signature ‘blade’ on the body side, sweeping towards the rear. Its muscular disposition is reinforced by its higher ground clearance and 18” alloy wheels. But what I really liked about the Mokka is its cleverness. Inside, the vehicle displays archetypal Vauxhall values such as versatility and user-friendly functionality, providing up to 1,372-litres of load space and 19 storage locations.

The Mokka also offers the latest generation Flex-Fix bicycle carrier. The user-friendly case is fully integrated in the rear underbody, functioning like a drawer and accommodating up to three bikes at a time. Brilliant, if you’re into two-wheeled outdoor family fun. The SUV is available in front-wheel and all-wheel-drive. The 4x4 system wasn’t fitted to my demo, but if I was in the market for a Mokka I’d definitely want it.

cut a way through the dark like a laser - they really are that good. The Vauxhall Mokka range is available priced, as my test model was, from a very reasonable £15,995 - and it’s far more handsome than its unsightly rival, the Nissan Juke. PROS • Smart • Distinct • Smooth drive • Reasonably priced CONS • Slow off the mark

FAST FACTS • Max speed: 114 mph • 0-60 mph: 11.9 secs • Combined mpg: 43.5 • Engine: 1598 cc 4 cylinder 16 valve petrol • Max. power (bhp): 113 at 6000rpm • Max. torque (lb/ft): 114 at 4000rpm • CO2: 153 g/km • Price: £15,995 on the road

As you’d expect, the extra technology ensures a high level of stability and traction, extending the car’s capabilities to more rugged environments. It’s always worth having for extra safety reasons alone. Standard features that enhanced the driving experience for me included Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control (TC) as well as Hill Start Assist (HAS). Other progressive upmarket gadgetry the Mokka brings to the table includes Advanced Adaptive Forward Lighting. This increases driving safety and includes High Beam Assist. The lights
