WYMONDHAM Successful Parking Crackdown At School Police in Wymondham fined a driver for parking dangerously during an operation at a local school. Last month a police officer and Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) from Wymondham Safer Neighhbourhood Team (SNT) attended Robert Kett Junior School during the key pick up and drop off times for a week to monitor parking after complaints and were on hand to issue fines and words of advice to those breaking the rules.

Dickensian Christmas Fayre 2nd December 2010. Wymondham Lions will once again be holding their Dickensian Christmas Fayre. Spotlight On Success One girl benefiting from a sports scholarships is Lilyella, a current Year 7 pupil. She has an impressive list of sporting achievements including swimming for Norfolk and competing in the ISA National Championships in high jump.

Advice on road safety is being given to Necton youngsters in a bid to help them stay safe on the roads as the dark nights approach. Breckland Funeral Services of Watton has teamed up with national road safety charity, Brake, to encourage schools to help make children aware about road safety. “We are helping to raise awareness of the importance of being visible on the road during dark nights.With the clocks having just gone back, darker mornings and evenings mean that children need to take extra care on their journeys to and from school,” said Eirlys Johnson, manager of Breckland Funeral Services.

A new way to start a New Year. Defrost Crime Prevention Officers from the Organised Car Crime team are warning Norfolk drivers not to leave their cars unattended whilst defrosting them as reports of cars being stolen come in from across the country. Knowing that, legally, all windows on vehicles have to be clear with no obstructions before beginning their journey; drivers are taking the risk of leaving their engines running to defrost on a chilly morning and heading back to
the warmth inside their homes. This is an opportunity for thieves to strike and often vehicle owners may find that not only have they lost their transport to work or school but also their insurance companies will not honour their claims. DC Chris Woodcock, Organised Car Crime, said: “As the weather gets colder, some motorists become careless and leave keys in their ignitions as their vehicles defrost, and go back into their homes.

Knee Braces For Skiing Charity Concert Returning to skiing following an injury can be very daunting. The twisting and lateral forces put through the knee when skiing, are the cause of many knee injuries.

With this high level of demand being placed on the knee, it is not surprising that many skiers decide to opt for a knee brace. The problem is how do you know which one to go for? Most knee braces are made from neoprene. This is a synthetic rubber which is elastic and moulds to the shape of the joint. It is heat retaining to keep the joint warm, promote healing and to be long lasting. High Protection The braces with the highest level of protection are hinged braces. These provide complete protection against twisting and lateral movements of the knee. This is important when skiing following a knee injury. Injuries for which you may need a hinged brace include ACL, PCL, other ligament ruptures and meniscus injuries. Medium Protection Medium protection braces have either steel springs or plastic stays embedded

in the material down either side of the knee joint. These will help to prevent twisting and sideways movements and tend to be more lightweight and less bulky than hinged braces. Injuries for which you may need a medium level support include ligament sprains and patellofemoral pain. Low Protection The lowest level of knee support includes simple neoprene and elastic styles, with no additional supportive structures. This type of support is generally not suitable for skiing, as they provide very little support and no resistance to the twisting and sideways manoeuvres which cause injuries.

£1400 Raised For Self Help Groups Sportspark customers have helped raise £1400 for two self help groups who use its facilities. Archant Norfolk has supplied Sportspark with copies of The Eastern Daily Press and Norwich Evening News for the past two months. All proceeds from the sales have been donated to two selected groups. £1400 has now been collected and will be split between the Post Surgery Support Group and Parkinson’s Group. The Post Surgery Support Group for women, who have been diagnosed with cancer, meets on Wednesdays at Sportspark. They can partake in a choice of activities including Badminton, Hatha Yoga and Aqua Stretch and get together for a drink in the Sportscafé. Exercises are planned specifically for the needs of women who have been diagnosed with cancer and have had treatment or surgery. Coral Warren, organiser of the Post Surgery Support Group said: “Rehabilitation through sport action is beneficial, and Yoga is a class that often the most vulnerable of people with cancer turn to first. The money donated is a real boost to all of us, particularly those who are feeling low when diagnosed. We are very grateful and never expected to be supported like this.” The Norwich and District branch of Parkinson’s UK swim and attend a special Yoga class at Sportspark on Mondays. Parkinson’s is caused by the loss of nerve cells in the brain which can result in the loss of controlled muscle movement as

well as problems with balance, breathing and mobility. The Sportspark exercise group also provides much needed social interaction for people with Parkinson’s and their carers. Joy Raymer, secretary of the Parkinson’s Group said: “The group is important because it motivates people to do exercise on a regular basis. It helps improve flexibility which can improve mobility. It’s also nice for the carers to come along so they can unwind and de-stress, by doing Yoga, swimming or just having a coffee and a chat in the café.”

The message of Christmas is all about God’s love given through the life of Jesus Christ. When applied to our lives it brings an opportunity for a new beginning, freedom from the grip of sin and the greatest sense of peace. To be sure, it’s a message of eternal love, and it’s one that never fails (1 Corinthians 13:7-8). It’s also one of reassurance. The young person who is feeling uncertain and insecure needs to know of God’s welcoming love.

Christmas is a time for being together and demonstrating our love and care for one another. Yet we must never forget that it was God himself who first showed his love for us. And this hasn’t changed since his Son’s birth. God is still saying “I love you” to all who will listen. Jesus Christ came to bring an eternal light to a darkened world and offer a message of hope and love that could never be silenced. How To Use Colour

One of the most common questions I’m asked is how colour can be used to make a space seem bigger, smaller, taller etc. There a few simple tips that you can follow, these include –
Boo, a gentle giant of a horse whose story shocked the equine world and the public at large in March 2009 when he was was left blind by heartless thugs is now starring on a Christmas Card to raise money for the charity that saved him. The brave Clydesdale – who now lives happily at Redwings Horse Sanctuary’s headquarters near Norwich – is being celebrated by his charity carers for his braveness in adapting to his sightless world. Boo, already blind in one eye from cancer, was shot in his good eye by unknown attackers in a premeditated mindless act of violence whilst he was turned out at his home in Surrey. The pellet was so far embedded in the back of his eye it was likely that the shotgun’s barrel was held up against his eye. Boo’s owner was faced with a difficult decision and was even advised to put him to sleep, as at 16.1hh the heavy horse was potentially difficult and dangerous to care for. They had heard of Redwings’ expertise in this area and approached the Sanctuary for their help. After careful consideration, Redwings agreed to take him in as they could offer Boo all the specialist care and veterinary

attention he might need. The charity is already home to 25 other visually impaired horses. Boo’s friend Oliver (who also features on the card) has unobtrusive bells in his mane so Boo can hear where he is. Every day, Boo’s feed is put in the same place and wind chimes act as a compass for where the water trough is. Boo’s paddock is next to the charity’s administration building so the staff can cast an eye over Boo regularly. “Even though Boo lives at our headquarters and not a Visitor Centre he has built up a fan base,” explains Communications Manager Nicola Markwell. “We took a lovely photo of him munching hay last year which we’ve decided to turn into a Christmas card as he looks so at peace. Despite the pain he has been through and his lack of sight he remains calm and friendly. Around Wymondham In World War Two
I’ve lived in Norfolk for more than 30 years...
Local historian and author Philip Yaxley has teamed up with his old school chum, publisher John Nickalls, to produce a new book about Wymondham – Around Wymondham in World War Two.
Early on, I was an active Young Farmer. Then later, a school parent Governor. I’ve also been a Trustee of several local charities and am currently a Trustee of Norfolk Community Foundation. I guess you’d say I’m someone who gets involved. For most of those years I’ve worked locally too. Right now I describe myself as a social entrepreneur, starting things, connecting things and striving to make the world a better place. It’s good for me too, as I’m paid to write, speak or advise groups and organisations trying to become more enterprising, without sacrificing social, ethical and environmental ideals. I work nationally too, but local projects are by far the most rewarding. Helping people achieve for their community things they thought impossible is great fun. We usually start with a problem, often financial and then find a creative solution. It’s much more than fundraising because by helping people become more entrepreneurial, future funding becomes less of a
challenge. One thing I know from experience is that ‘Big Society’ is something people here have been doing quite nicely for generations. The new big idea of localism, community ownership of public assets and community delivery of public services suits Norfolk well. I’ve met countless people doing just that and now countless more face new opportunities to do the same. But not every community can find the money to pay someone like me to help. That’s why I wrote ‘How to be a Social Entrepreneur.’ It’s an easy to follow, step by step guide to making a difference by becoming more entrepreneurial. They have known each other since they both joined Thetford Grammar School in September 1948. It will be Phillip’s sixth book on Wymondham, though his last one on the town came out ten years ago. Using over 160 evocative illustrations, the book chronicles the town’s preparations for war, together with activities, events and scenes in the locality through the years of the conflict. From air raids to Americans, all aspects of the war as they affected the lives of Wymondham folk are highlighted. To set the scene each chronological section begins with a short list of major events in the global conflict. Appendices
list the top songs, radio programmes and, of course, the films seen at the Wymondham Regal during the war. The book serves as a nostalgic trip for the older folk and gives younger people an insight into what life was like in the Wymondham area at the time. Churchills Club hosted its second music evening last month which is to be now a regular first Saturday of the month slot.
Cottage Windows Ltd is a small family business with a growing reputation in the Dereham area.
We had a great five piece band called Get the Folk Out, a very skilled flamenco guitarist came and other numerous really good singer /guitarists. We welcome singers, musicians and of course an audience. One of our strengths is that we are on a Saturday night so for most people there will be no concern about getting up early for work. Another strength is that you can move away from the music, round the corner to the bar for a chat so not disturbing the musicians. In a lot of venues you can’t do this and you can come away after a whole evening not having spoken to anyone. So we are a place where you can network, meet others and maybe form a band.

A Winter’s Tale: Seasonal Risks We are approaching that time of year when there is a significant rise in the number of weather related accidents and injuries. It is appropriate to be reminded what rights and responsibilities are relevant. The law of negligence applies to everyone, from private citizens to public bodies. Everyone, in some way or form, during any day, has a legal duty towards someone else to ensure that person is reasonably safe from harm. If you do something that creates a risk of foreseeable harm to someone else then you may be legally liable. Here are some seasonal potentially negligent acts: • Driving too close to someone else in poor visibility or bad road conditions i.e. not driving within appropriate stopping distances. • Clearing snow from in front of your house without doing anything to prevent ice forming on the wet cleared area if it is icy weather. • Leaving driveways and paths on your property icy and a hazard for anyone coming to the house. • Not doing anything to check a tree

that does not appear too healthy (or is obviously old or near the end of its life) which overhangs a neighbour’s property or the public highway and is then blown over in a gale causing damage or injury. • Not taking proper care to prevent water pipes from freezing that, on thawing, burst and allow water to escape and damage someone else’s property (e.g. in flats and apartments or terraced housing). • Throwing a snowball with a core of ice at someone. Legal liabilities, quite separately from the above examples, can also arise if you are a landowner of premises even if you don’t actually live there. There is an obligation to ensure that anyone visiting those premises is reasonably safe, e.g. meter readers, delivery people etc. The duty also might cover an absentee landlord of a rented property if, under the tenancy, he has responsibility for the structure or common areas such as car parks or paths.
An employer is under a duty to provide a safe environment for the workforce and where the place of work is exposed to the weather then extra care is needed to comply with that duty. There are also regulations that apply to workplace equipment. It must be properly maintained and if it is not, and a worker is injured, the employer is liable. Therefore items such as ramps and other equipment used outside in all weathers need to be regularly checked. Householders are also at risk under the law of nuisance if they do, or allow something to be done on their property that interferes with someone else’s land. The example of the potentially dangerous tree mentioned above could be both a nuisance and a negligent act. If the nuisance affects the general public it is called a Public Nuisance and is a criminal offence. Nuisances that might occur in winter could be for instance, allowing drains to become blocked so they overflow onto a neighbour’s land or diverting storm water on to a neighbour’s land. In one case the court said it was a public
nuisance for a landowner to allow snow to accumulate on a roof which then slid off and injured someone on the public highway. During the winter we are very concerned about the state of roads and footpaths and whether the authorities are doing enough. Authorities responsible for streets, roads and paths are not under a duty to ensure they are absolutely safe all of the time. The duty is to maintain them so they are in a state fit for ordinary traffic and what is appropriate depends on the type of road or path and the extent it is used. Also relevant is the state of repair an ordinary person would expect to find a road. Therefore greater attention will be given to city streets, major trunk roads and motorways than village streets and suburban paths. We cannot expect the council to keep all roads equally free of ice and snow. A PACT Between People And Animals The PACT Animal Sanctuary based at Woodrising near Hingham care for over 600 animals of all species: from hamsters to horse and budgies to peacocks. PACT rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes after home checks, where possible, all species seeking help. PACT rescues injured wildlife and fledglings and if they cannot be released, they live the rest of their lives in a secure wildlife site at the sanctuary.

How do the wrinkle reducing injections work? I offer treatments to reduce the appearance of wrinkles using Botulinum Toxin injections – this is a chemical used frequently in medicine to effectively and safely treat a variety of conditions from cerebral palsy muscle spasticity to unstable bladders! It is particularly effective at paralysing certain facial muscles thus reducing the development of wrinkles especially in the forehead and crow’s feet area of the face. Botox injections take around two weeks to take effect and the results last for around three months.

CARING FOR THE ELDERLY Remembrance Sunday Hears Remarkable Stories Of Heroes Living In Norfolk Home Residents of Oak Manor Nursing Home in Norfolk have been marking this year’s Remembrance Day with a look back in time to some of the fantastic achievements of residents by spending the day recounting memories and creating commemorative art work. Faced with unimaginable danger, the team courageously worked to take out German lines of communication, ensuring the success of the operation and saving countless Allied lives.
Above: Richard Frost Gordon Goodwin is 95 years old and has been at Oak Manor for two years. During the Second World War, Gordon was part of an elite mission that changed the course of history forever. The night before the D-Day landings, Gordon and a small team of soldiers were dropped behind enemy lines in Northern France.
Another veteran with a fascinating past is Richard Frost. During The War Richard fought in the invasion of Sicily, code named Operation Husky. The battle was a huge success and helped topple Mussolini from power. Now aged 86, Richard is very active and enjoys many of the activities at the home. As well as painting and singing, Richard has set up his own email account so he can keep in touch with his family in Australia.
Richard Frost said, “I love talking about the old days with our Activities Coordinator Billy, and reminiscing with other residents. Remembrance Day is such an important occasion and I’m proud to have done my bit.” Billy Mckee the Activities Coordinator at

Local Care Homes Celebrate National Apple Day October saw a group of Norfolk care homes were joined by former Council Leader, Daniel Cox, to mark this year’s National Apple Day with a series of juicy activities. National Apple Day, held on October 21st, is the annual celebration of apples, orchards and cider.

Local people and residents’ friends and families were invited to come along and join in with a day of non-stop apple-themed fun, which took place at Oak Manor, Sanford House and Necton Grange. The five homes are run by the family-owned Caring Homes Group, which was founded in 1994 by mother and son team, Helena and Paul Jeffery.
Cedar House hosted the core of the celebrations, which included an array of apple activities, such as a delicious apple juice tasting session organised by a local orchard owner, a press where people made their own cider, and the chance to sample a host of tasty apple-based treats, like apple pie, apple cake and apple crumble.
Children from Alpington Primary School had been preparing for the event for weeks, by drawing and painting apple pictures. The budding artists came along to Cedar House to see their work exhibited on the day.

One of the highlights of the celebration was the grand finale of the Apple Limerick Competition. People from across the county were invited to write apple-themed poems for the chance to win a delicious selection of Norfolk apple juices. Former Council Leader, Daniel Cox, announced the winner of the competition, and their poem was read out to all the guests.
Tony Vale, Community Liaison Officer at Caring Homes, who helped to organise the celebrations, said: “Caring Homes is passionate about keeping our homes and residents at the heart of the local community. Our National Apple Day celebration was a wonderful opportunity to invite local people to join in with some delicious and healthy fun!”
To mark the end of the celebrations Mr Cox also planted a beautiful apple tree at Cedar House, to remind everyone of the fun they had and hopefully provide some home-grown apples this time next year. Cedar House Home Manager, Sarah Taylor said: “Apple Day has been absolutely fantastic. Our residents and guests loved taking part in the activities and I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many apples in

Don’t Drink And Drive This Christmas! If you drive at twice the legal alcohol limit you are at least 30 times more likely to cause a road crash, than a driver who hasn’t been drinking. Any amount of alcohol affects your ability to drive. There is no foolproof way of drinking and staying under the limit, or of knowing how much an individual person can drink and still drive safely.

So the only safe option is not to drink alcohol if you plan to drive, and never offer an alcoholic drink to someone else who is intending to drive. THINK! strategy for drink driving The THINK! strategy for drink driving is to remind all drivers of the personal consequences of drink driving, and that a drink driving conviction can ruin your life. The campaigns focus on the ‘moment of doubt’ around the second pint, when drivers are considering whether or not to have another drink. THINK! runs two major drink drive
The current campaigns target 1-3 pint drink drivers, not ‘drunk drivers’, with a particular focus on young men aged 17-29 years old. They don’t focus on the increased risk of a crash, as our research has found that young men believe: • A crash is unlikely after 1 or 2 drinks • Drink drive ads showing a crash are not relevant to them but to people who drive when drunk • They’re more likely to be over the limit and caught after 1 or 2 drinks
Take A Different Way Home If you’ve been drinking, it’s better not to drive. There are plenty of alternative ways to get home - you could: • Book a taxi • Use public transport • Stay overnight • Arrange a lift with someone who isn’t drinking Sobering-Up Tricks Do Not Work Coffee and cold showers the morning after a night out don’t help you sober up. Time is the only way to get the alcohol out of your system and you could still be over the legal limit many hours after drinking. Drink Driving And The Law The legal consequences of a drink driving conviction are severe and long-lasting.
Driving Or Attempting To Drive While Above The Legal Limit Or Unfit Through Drink = 6 months’ imprisonment, together with a fine of up to £5,000 and disqualification from driving for at least 12 months (3 years if convicted twice in 10 years). Being In Charge Of A Vehicle Whilst Above The Legal Limit Or Unfit Through Drink = 3 months’ imprisonment, a fine of up to £2,500 and discretionary disqualification from driving. Refusing To Provide A Specimen Of Breath, Blood Or Urine For Analysis = 6 months’ imprisonment, together with a fine of up to £5,000 and disqualification from driving for at least 12 months.
Causing Death By Careless Driving When Under The Influence Of Drink Or Drugs = 14 years’ imprisonment, together with an unlimited fine, disqualification from driving for at least 2 years and a mandatory extended driving test.
