WYMONDHAM David Turner Says Goodbye To Wymondham Station After 23 years trading at Wymondham Station, David Turner, proprietor of The Brief Encounter Restaurant, has reluctantly decided to leave the business in order to begin a well-earned retirement.

Above: Actress Virginia McKenna joined David Turner at the Brief Encounter Restaurant in 2007. “I can’t pretend that this has been an easy decision” said Mr Turner, “but I feel that the time is right to let go. Although we had quite a successful summer last year, nobody would pretend that trading conditions are easy in the current economic climate, especially for those of us in the leisure and

that I have always loved trains, so I gradually set about bringing the station back to life using proceeds from my piano business” Mr Turner explained.

Mr Turner continued: “I would like to thank our many customers for their support and to pay tribute to my own staff, some of whom have given many years of loyal service and have themselves contributed so much towards building the business to become widely recognised as one of the very best of it’s type in the country.”

“I managed to get permission to remove seating and other items from old railway carriages to help create ‘Brief Encounter’. Now, 23 years on, and with us having won a string of both local and national awards, I feel proud of the role that I have played inmaking Wymondham Station such an important gateway to the town and surrounding area.” “I’m pleased to say that a catering business will be retained here at Wymondham Station under the new ownership, and that although I’m

supposedly retiring, I will be continuing with my piano tuning activities. I’m also intending to devote much more time to my garden and to my support for Wymondham Abbey and my home village of Ashwellthorpe” said Mr Turner. The Brief Encounter Restaurant currently remains open daily, with the new owners, who are developing exciting plans for the future, expected to take over in mid-February. Also based at Wymondham Station, Station Taxis and the Nailway Beauty Salon are both continuing to trade normally alongside the part-time railway ticket sales point, operated by National Express East Anglia.

J & S Homeworks During this wet and windy season your gutters could be blocked & overflowing. Check Round Your Property For Damage. The wintry weather can cause damage to your gutters, which in turn can cause damp patches on the external walls. Felt could also be damaged and water may be getting into your loft. If you detect any of these faults, give J & S Homeworks a call. Gutters can easily become blocked by leaves, feathers, dirt and debris blown into them. Once a gutter becomes blocked, rainwater will flow directly off the roof onto the walls and windows of your home, as well as onto access paths. Seriously neglected gutters often have weeds growing in them, adding to the problem. Water constantly overflowing from blocked gutters damages bricks and mortar and can

cause extensive damp on the outside and mould on the inside of your house as it is absorbed by the bricks, making even the most beautiful of homes appear unsightly. J & S Homeworks can bring your UPVC back to its original condition again. Our Fascia and Soffit Cleaning service really can make a difference to the look and feel of your properties exterior and help to keep it in good condition. The cleaning products we use are specifically designed to effectively and thoroughly clean exterior surfaces. We offer a 3 stage payment scheme (T&Cs apply). Norfolk Parent Partnership offer impartial, neutral and accurate advice to parents of children with special educational needs. We give support for educational issues which includes offering: • Confidential telephone support • User-friendly information • Putting parents in touch with others who can help • A volunteer Independent Parental Supporter (IPS) to help with forms, go to meetings, explain procedures etc. We support parents over the telephone, by email or through our team of trained and mentored volunteers. Our aims are to work together to support parents to be fully involved in their child’s education, to understand the wording, processes and procedures which we know can be very

daunting. A good relationship between parents, schools and the Local Authority benefits everybody, ultimately and most importantly, it benefits our children. Our volunteers help parents with any issues relating to their child’s education including understanding reports, preparing and going to meetings, guiding through the paperwork around a Statement of Special Educational Needs and generally explaining procedures and choices. This is done by working together, supporting to move forward, giving our parents the confidence and understanding they need to benefit their children. Norfolk Parent Partnership covers the whole of Norfolk and has volunteers supporting across the county. We also ensure parents views are represented and influence local and national policy and practice. We have a steering group which includes people from voluntary groups, Children’s Services (Education and Social Care) and health professionals. Together we plan the services we provide to parents and carers in Norfolk.

Would you like to become involved and have your say about what is happening with educational issues for children with special needs in Norfolk? We will be organising a parental focus group to put parent’s views across. If you have used our service and would like to learn more please get in touch.

Wymondham Arts Centre Maz Jackson New Egg Tempera Work Launches Wymondham Arts Centre’s Third Season. Maz Jackson, international Norfolk artist, is staging a solo exhibition of new work, featuring her surreal egg tempera gilded paintings and sculptures and woodcut prints, to launch Wymondham Arts Centre’s third season at Becket’s Chapel. The exhibition runs from Saturday, March 19 to Sunday, April 10; open Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sunday 12noon to 5pm, free entry, www.wymondhamarts.com. Maz Jackson was born in Norfolk, brought up in New Buckenham and lives and works in East Harling. She has been a full-time professional artist all her working life. Her paintings are in permanent gallery collections in Beijing, Bologna, Florence and the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, USA. As well as Wymondham Arts Centre, her 2011 schedule includes exhibitions in Barcelona, Bologna and a solo show at the Basilica di San Lorenzo, Florence. She will also be representing the UK for the fifth time at the Florence Biennale in December. The Wymondham exhibition will be an early opportunity to buy examples of her new work. Maz Jackson said: “I am very pleased that

Wymondham Art’s Centre invited me to launch its 2011 season. It is wonderful to be revealing my new work so close to home, as I draw much of my inspiration from the Norfolk countryside. It is also heart-warming to get recognition in my own ‘backyard’.”

them was an intense religious experience. I feel that my own work is a similar spiritual journey. I am very respectful of the pure pigments that I use from all over the world, as well as the Norfolk oak that is the ‘canvas’ for my paintings.”

Maz’s egg tempera work is intensely colourful and full of spiritual imagery. Doves flying with mystical hooded eyes, along with female and male symbols and the swirling waters of life, encourage the viewer to consider the balance in their own lives as well as the world that we inhabit.

“A childhood of visiting the region’s churches and cathedrals with my father introduced me to these traditions, that also influence my sense of colour and technique,” added Maz Jackson. “It is therefore apt that this exhibition takes place in Becket’s Chapel, where these methods would have been employed by medieval craftsmen.”

“My mother came from Ireland and my father was a New Buckenham grocer,” explained Maz Jackson. “I have always loved colour and feel that this comes from my Irish background, as well as being intrigued by the colourful international goods that were sold in my father’s shop and being inspired by the beautiful Norfolk countryside.” “Egg tempera is an ancient method,” continued Maz Jackson, “going back as far as cave paintings and championed by early Christian icon painters. Painting for

In addition to using Norfolk oak, Maz also buys her eggs locally from Molly’s Free Range Eggs in nearby Quidenham. All other materials including pigments and specialist brushes are purchased from Norwich Art Supplies in St. Benedicts. Professor Arthur Lucas, Chairman of Wymondham Arts Centre’s steering group, said: “We are very excited that Maz Jackson is staging the first exhibition of Wymondham Arts Centre’s third season. She has a very busy international schedule, and we are fortunate that March is a time that suits her. Our visitors will have an early opportunity to see new work prepared for her 2011 shows. We will be able to compare her approaches to imagery in different media, because as well as the classic techniques of egg tempera deployed in her distinctive way, she is including hand-pulled woodcut prints, drawings and watercolours.” 2011 Programme – in most cases shows open on the Tuesday of the (first) week of the exhibition, with Monday being changeover day. New Year Bathroom Makeover

The Junior and Pre-Prep departments were serenaded by harpist Ms Rebecca Witts at the beginning of this term.

Well another New Year has crept up on us and that all important home project you have been contemplating about for sometime has yet to be sorted.

Ms Witts brought two harps to show the pupils, one of which weighed a mighty thirteen stone and stood over six feet tall! A few pupils had the chance to play a couple of chords of ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star’.

Close To You A tribute to The Carpenters When: Friday 11th March 2011 Where: The Central Hall, Back Lane, Wymondham Time: 7.30pm Tickets are £10 with profits going to the East Anglian Air Ambulance. Tickets are available from The Book Fountain, Wartons Court, Wymondham and Reeves, 2 Market Street, Wymondham or call 01953 600563.

The pupils commented; “It was scary having a go because of how big and heavy the harp was and because I was playing in front of lots of people. The coloured strings really helped.” The strings, made from metal and gut, are coloured to make it easier to distinguish between notes. Ms Witts started playing the harp at the age of eleven and has now played for fifteen years, owning a total of six harps. Harp lessons are offered to any interested pupils from Year 3 to Year 13.

How Do I Select Colours For My Rooms That Work? As colour specialists we at Dulux Design service know a little about choosing colour. Here are a few handy tips from your local Dulux interior designer Steve Lait. Next you need to consider moods, to help you Dulux has labelled it’s stripe cards into 4 categories - Rich, Fresh, Warm and Calm all you need to do is select the atmosphere you want.” “With over 15,000 Dulux colours to select from, making the right choice can sometimes seem overwhelming. So let’s keep it simple, first begin by selecting a start colour and looking at the existing colours in the room (top tip, take a good look at the existing furniture and pictures that are going to stay in the room).

Colour wheel link www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_wheel

There are three main ways to plan your colours:

The Dulux Design Service can help create a fresh new interior at any time of year. With the colour expertise you’d expect, the Dulux Designers aren’t tied to any brand so they can source a fantastic range of fabrics, furniture, flooring, lighting and accessories.

Tonal - select main colour and then a shade from the same colour strip, mid tone for the walls and darker for the doors and features. Harmonising - select colours from strip cards next to or near each other. Contrasting colour scheme - these are colours opposite to each other on a colour wheel and can be striking and dramatic.

Norfolk & Suffolk Power Flushing Any of these symptoms in my advert could indicate that your central heating system had problems from internal corrosion, rust, sludge & scale. A power flush can restore circulation and efficiency to your central heating system by removing these products. The process involves connecting a power flushing pump to the existing central heating pump valves, or across the tails of a radiator. Specialist chemicals are then pumped around the heating system to loosen and mobilise

the unwanted debris. Each radiator is then individually flushed clean, an inhibitor is added to prevent further corrosion. The process is done with minimal disruption. For more information on for a free no obligation quote, ring Paul on (01508) 532671 or 07879 414197.

The beauty of running is that there are very few needs; all you’ll ever really need is you, a pair of running shoes and some discipline. Here are a few basics to get you started. Your First Run When starting out as a new runner it is recommended that you pace yourself until your body gets used to your new sport. Begin with a decent warm up of five to fifteen minutes fast walking and then try and run at a steady pace for five minutes. After this, if you feel breathless then slow down and walk for two minutes before picking up your speed again and running at a steady pace for an additional five minutes. Maintain this sequence a few more times, before walking for ten minutes as a cool off. In future sessions increase the length of the running intervals as well as reducing recovery time in-between.

When you run you need to have a somewhat straight back, be bending forward slightly from the waist and look straight ahead. You should move your legs in an almost cycling manner, making sure you keep your feet pointing in the direction you are running for the most efficient stride. Building an efficient running style will make running a lot easier in the long run. At Wynsport we stock a wide range of running shoes and clothing.

Technique Focusing on running technique in the initial stages is very important, learning proper running posture and form early on will be a lot easier than having to adjust your technique when you are stuck in your ways.

Selling Off Garden Land By W F Smith and Co Consultant Roger Sharp. get your land “released”. It might not be possible and you might need to apply to the Lands Tribunal.

Above: Roger Sharp Nowadays houses are built with small garden areas and many people with older houses consider selling off part of their large plots for development. Not only can some capital be raised but also, in highly desirable areas, the market value of the original house is not much affected. If you are considering doing this, there are some very important issues to bear in mind. Firstly you need to look at your own deeds. There might be a restrictive covenant preventing you from putting up another house. If this is the case you would need to involve the original builder and possibly also your neighbours to

Then of course there are the planning laws. Planning permission will be needed for the development. You will, at the very least, have to get outline permission to stand a realistic chance of selling at a profit. The services of an architect or planning consultant will be needed to deal adequately with the local authority’s requirements. Some people sell off part of the garden and remain in the original house. Other people sell the old house and build a new one for themselves on the former garden land. Whichever is chosen there are some essential legal issues to bear in mind. A right of way will be needed (perhaps a shared access) from the highway. Provisions are needed to ensure that obligations of repair and maintenance are fairly shared. How are services to be supplied? Rights will need to be in place to ensure both new sites can be adequately supplied with all services.

Are pipes, cables, sewers and drains to be shared? If so it is important that there are provisions for joint maintenance and repair. Service rights must cover (1) the right to excavate and lay services on the neighbouring land (2) a separate right to use the pipes etc and (3) the right to enter the neighbour’s land to carry out repair work. The requirements of the service provider have to be borne in mind. In a recent case a right to lay services over a neighbour’s land was not enough for EDF which needed a separate right, in its favour, to lay cables across that land. Since there was no obligation on the neighbour to provide such a right, electricity could not be supplied to the claimant’s property.

• Not to build other than strictly in accordance with a specific planning permission. • To maintain certain boundaries. The need for rights and covenants differs with each property. The documentation needs to be “tailormade” for each case. A solicitor’s help is essential to getting it right.

You also need to consider imposing your own covenants on the land you sell off. Examples would be: • Only one house in the occupation of one family. • Not to do anything that would be a nuisance or annoyance. • Not to obstruct accesses or shared drains.

Youth Council Kicks Off 2011 With A Bang Breckland Council received some fantastic news over the Christmas period in being shortlisted for yet another award, but this time it is the Youth Council that is being recognised. The Youth Council is delighted to have been shortlisted for a ‘Community Support’ Award in the Bernard Matthews Youth Awards 2011 which will be announced towards the end of February. Made up of nine teenagers ranging from 15 – 19 years old Breckland Youth Council meets once a month to discuss issues and concerns of their fellow teenagers in the Breckland area and works towards improving the image, status and welfare of young people.

Youth Councillors have recently undertaken a training day which was funded from ‘Take Part’ funding and delivered by the British Youth Council. This provided a great deal of inspiration for the Youth Council and in turn has motivated them to start their first campaign.

In addition to giving up their time for meetings, members of the Youth Council actively engage and organise events such as the ‘Pride in Breckland Youth Awards’ where they recognised their peers’ achievements, and a ‘Participatory Budget’ round where the Youth Councillors decided on grants to be given to youth projects in the district.

The ‘YESS’ (Young People Engaging to Stop Stereotypes) Campaign focuses on social stereotypes and breaking down barriers between the generations of youth and senior citizens. This will cover a variety of areas such as Anti-Social Behaviour, Youth Activities and Social Inclusion. It is anticipated that this will change people’s attitudes and in turn will bring communities together.

The Hunt For Breckland’s Ensuring Rover’s Return Greenest Family Is On! Breckland Council has announced that free micro-chipping vouchers are on offer for the first 100 residents to apply who are in receipt of benefits.

Whether you cycle to work or school, grow your own vegetables, use energy saving light bulbs or do your best to repair rather than replace, officers from Breckland Council want to hear from you! The Council has announced a new competition to find Breckland’s Greenest Family who will help promote a more environmentally friendly lifestyle and encourage other residents to make simple changes that will make a big difference.

“I know that there are lots of residents out there who are doing their bit to help the environment. This is an opportunity for one green family to lead by example and use their experience to inspire others - and win some fantastic prizes too!”

In return, the chosen family will receive £100 eco vouchers, a veg box scheme up to the value of £250 and a free one year leisure pass to a Breckland Council leisure centre.

To be considered, families should complete a questionnaire to demonstrate that they are doing their bit to help the environment. To help Breckland promote the green message, the winners must agree to feature in Breckland Voice and other media, passing on tips to other residents about steps they are taking to reduce their carbon footprint.

Lady Kay Fisher, Breckland Council Executive Member for Environmental Wellbeing and Communications said:

It is hoped that this new initiative will help reunite lost dogs with their owners and help tackle a problem which incurs a substantial cost to council tax payers. Acting on complaints from the public, Breckland Council’s dog warden service

Health, beauty & wellbeing Why 5 A Day? Fruit and vegetables are part of a balanced diet and can help us stay healthy. That’s why it so important that we get enough of them. 5 A DAY highlights the health benefits of getting five 80g portions of fruit and vegetables every day. That’s 5 portions of fruit & veg altogether, not 5 portions of each. Five Reasons To Get Five Portions • Fruit and vegetables taste delicious and there’s so much variety to choose from. • They’re a good source of vitamins and minerals, including folate, vitamin C and potassium. • They’re an excellent source of dietary fibre, which helps maintain a healthy gut and prevent constipation and other digestion problems. A diet high in fibre can also reduce your risk of bowel cancer. • They can help reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and some cancers. • Fruit and vegetables contribute to a healthy and balanced diet.

26 Dispatch February 2011

Fruit and vegetables are also usually low in fat and calories (provided you don’t fry them or roast them in lots of oil). That’s why eating them can help you maintain a healthy weight and keep your heart healthy. 5 A DAY is based on advice from the World Health Organization, which recommends eating a minimum of 400g of fruit and vegetables a day to lower the risk of serious health problems, such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and obesity. To get the most benefit out of your 5 A DAY, your five portions should include a variety of fruit and vegetables. This is because different fruits and vegetables contain different combinations of fibre, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. Almost all fruit and vegetables count towards your 5 A DAY. Potatoes and cassava don’t count

because they mainly contribute starch to the diet.

Changes To Car Insurance Legislation Compulsory motor insurance was introduced in 1930 when it was agreed that it was necessary to make sure that anyone injured in a road collision was not left uncompensated. New Car Insurance Legislation Today, there are in the excess of 31 million registered vehicles on the UK’s roads. Under the new government powers it will be an offence to keep an uninsured vehicle, rather than just to drive when uninsured. The new powers are intended to get uninsured drivers off the road, freeing up police time to deal with the hard core of offenders.

Under The Proposed System: • The DVLA will work in partnership with the Motor Insurers’ Bureau to identify uninsured vehicles • Motorists will receive a letter telling them that their vehicle appears to be uninsured and warning them that they will be fined unless they take action

• If the keeper fails to insure the vehicle they will be given a £100 fine • If the vehicle remains uninsured regardless of whether the fine is paid - it could then be seized and destroyed • Vehicles with a valid Statutory Off Road Notice (SORN) will not be required to be insured.

News from across your region

VW Group Specialist Combines With Italian Car Specialist Chequered Flag has been established since 1976 and is based in Attleborough, South Norfolk. We are a family run business with a strong local connection in the area. The managing director Felix Desira and the sales and service team are always on hand to deal with any enquiries in a professional but friendly manner. You can browse our approved used, request a test drive and even make a service or MOT booking. The Chequered Flag have been associated with Skoda for 28 years and have expanded to become a VW group specialist, we buy, sell, service, MOT and repair any vehicle from Skoda, Seat, VW and Audi. At Chequered Flag we believe that buying or selling a car should be a pleasure and hassle free. Even if it’s a cheap car or one that costs plenty, we’ll use our vehicle history checks to reduce the risk of nasty surprises before you even view the vehicle. The service and parts department has fully trained and qualified staffs who are VW group accredited so you know that the standard of work is of the highest quality. The Chequered Flag are looking

at expanding the workshops and putting in two class 7 ramps one of which will be an MOT ramp. Last month they combined their efforts with Felix’s Brother, Joe Desira and launched the South Norfolk’s Italian Car Specialist. Joe has been a car enthusiast since the age of 3, when he was allowed to hold the leadlight for his brother’s garage underneath the arches in London. Joe’s background has always been in Italian Cars, namely Fiats & Alfa Romeos where coincidently he served his apprenticeship with Norman’s of Westminster in Vauxhall, which was a Citroen and Fiat dealership. He then specialised with Fiat. This experience has stood him in good stead as he now has an in depth knowledge and training in the mechanical side of things, he then left Fiat and came to Norfolk to work with his brothers, John and Sam.

He started out in the workshop and moved to Service Reception after 4 years. Joe was known for his ‘chatty’ disposition and couldn’t help but talk to the customers about the new vehicles in the showroom, often persuading them to have a new car rather than get their car serviced! ‘Time to change’ - and very often they did. His brothers’ noticed his natural salesmanship and promptly moved him into the showroom. This has been his natural arena ever since. He was at the Diss branch for 2 years, Great Yarmouth for 7 years and finally Bury St Edmunds for the past 14 years. Even in his spare time he takes his 1982 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV 2.0 to rallies with the Alfa Romeo Owners Club (much to his wife’s annoyance!). Joe had always had ambitions of setting up on his own so when his brother Felix offered him a space next to his own garage The Chequered Flag, Attleborough, he jumped at the chance. Offering nearly new and used Fiats &

Alfa Romeos, with the backup of all the servicing, Mot’s and valeting from next door. The above opening launches the new independent business, Joe Desira Car Sales, as East Anglia’s ‘ITALIAN CAR SPECIALIST’. The launch weekend was a great success over Saturday and Sunday with over 100 people in attendance, there was food and drinks as well as special deals on all used cars that were on offer, they also offered free car washes all day and MOT’s at £35 for both days. If you would like any further information for car sales, servicing, MOT’s Valeting on all of the VW group or Fiat and Alfa Romeos please contact us on info@cf-cars.co.uk / info@joedesira.co.uk or telephone 01953 452588. All in all very exciting times ahead for Felix and Joe Desira.
