2012 A Roaring Success For Lions 2012 was another bumper year for Wymondham Lions Club. Well established events like collections for Children in Need (£970) and Marie Curie raised money on behalf of others. The Charity Swim raised £2000, less than in previous years but still a substantial amount. The always weather dependent (and revamped due to the unavailability of the Pipe Band) Christmas Fayre did well not to make a loss thanks to our many sponsors. New events this year were the Town Quiz in February (£800), coffee morning for MacMillan Nurses (£270) and Charity Ball (£500). The summer highlight was the marvellous Jubilee celebration in the Market Square. Vintage cars, 2 couples celebrating their 60th wedding anniversaries, local entertainers and the feeding of over 400 local school children in an old fashioned street party. A wonderful day when even the weather was perfect. The Lions Christmas collection at Waitrose raised £960 and the majority of this went to providing presents for residents at 5 of the areas care homes. The Lions were lucky in

persuading Santa to go round the homes with them and to join in the carol singing where the Lion singers were assisted by volunteers from local choirs. All of the money raised by the Lions is used to support deserving causes mainly at home but also abroad, with no administration fees subtracted. 2012 saw over £14000 raised and distributed. The Lions are very grateful to everyone who has supported them throughout the year. They could not give aid to anyone without donations from the people of South Norfolk. Wymondham Lions were especially pleased last year at the help they received in organising events. The Jubilee Party, Christmas Fayre and Charity Ball were all community events run by Lions and non Lions. A major contributor at all 3 events was local guide leader Fran Young, who is pictured with Lion President John Wilde receiving a certificate of appreciation from the Lions. He said that Fran is an extremely busy

lady with a family, a job and the running of the guides. Her work in helping to organise and promote these activities has been phenomenal and is a great credit to her and her sense of community.

Don’t Let Hearing Loss Break Your Heart This Valentine’s Day By Karen Finch RHAD FSHAA FRSA, Managing Director of The Hearing Care Centre. “Are you even listening to me properly?”, “We’ve already discussed that.”, “You don’t understand me!” Let’s be honest: Is there anyone who’s never heard one of these phrases? It’s no secret that functioning communication is a basic requirement of a harmonious and happy relationship. However, what if the relationship is the very thing that’s impaired, because one of the partners is affected by hearing loss? One international hearing loss campaign, called Hear The World, has concerned itself with just that question and, in time for Valentine’s Day on 14th February, is publishing surprising results of the “Hearing is Living” study. Among other things, it shows that 1 in 3 people with hearing loss feel more attractive, lead better partnerships and enjoy a more fulfilled love life since wearing a hearing aid. This is fantastic, but worryingly, 50% of respondents with hearing loss but without a hearing aid, had not yet consulted a specialist about it, which makes studies

like this so important as it helps to start the conversation and thereby raise awareness. Taking action with hearing loss can make a huge difference to your life and your family’s life. If you are experiencing problems I urge you to book a hearing assessment with your local audiologist. Digital hearing aids have proved to be a major success in the enhancement of people’s lives. The technology is available in entry, mid-range and superior classes all of which have different features and capabilities One of my patients wrote these few words which sums up her happiness ‘A year ago I came to you a living hell, now I am a living heaven. ‘Traditional’ Police Uniform Trial Starts Police officers patrolling Wymondham and the surrounding villages returned to a more traditional police uniform from January 2013. The front-line officers at Wymondham Safer Neighbourhood Team are the first to trial a new-style white shirt as a potential replacement for the black zip-up polo shirts currently worn by most officers in Norfolk. The shirt, recently made available, offers a return to the familiar look of the ‘British Bobby’ whilst maintaining officer comfort with the use of modern wicking fabric around the torso.

Dave Benfield, General Secretary of Norfolk Police Federation, said: “Norfolk Police Federation fully supports the trial. Our members will continue to provide a first class policing service whatever uniform they are required to wear, however, the Federation view is that a return to white shirts can only enhance that positive first impression which individual officers strive to achieve.”

The trial will take place over the coming weeks. Assistant Chief Constable Gareth Wilson, who is leading the project, said “Norfolk Constabulary is one of the top performing forces in the country and we are proud of the service our officers deliver. The new white shirt is practical whilst projecting an image that is professional and smart and has been designed to meet the rigours of modern day policing.”

...appointed to new research and development role at East Anglian Air Ambulance. EAAA is delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Timothy Hodgetts, a serving Colonel in the British Army, as our Director of Clinical Quality and Development. Professor Hodgetts’ appointment will significantly increase the medical scope and capability of the Charity, adding considerably to our existing professional clinical expertise. Professor Hodgetts has a distinguished career and is very well known for both his research work and his work in developing clinical advances in pre hospital and emergency care. He has been a leader for over a decade in developing the clinical advances in pre-hospital and emergency care in the Armed Services that have led to exceptional outcomes. He was awarded the CBE in 2009 for his contribution to combat casualty care development and was awarded the Danish Defence Medal in 2010 for clinical leadership of a multinational field hospital in Afghanistan.

Tim Page Chief Executive of the East Anglian Air Ambulance said, “We are very proud that Professor Hodgetts has agreed to join us. His skills and expertise will enhance our ability to embrace innovation, and develop as a world-leader in the field of Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine. We have a tremendously exciting time ahead of us, and it is our local supporters and donors who will be the first to benefit from this work.” Professor Hodgetts is looking forward to his new role and said, “This is a fantastic opportunity for me to further develop the advances we have made in the areas of combat to improve the care and treatment that we are able to offer to local people who experience a medical emergency. I am really looking forward to working with the skilled and very talented people at EAAA.” Professor Hodgetts started work with the EAAA Charity in December 2012.

Supreme Bathrooms ....are pleased to announce that from January 2013 we will be able to supply a full home service with the arrival of kitchens and bedrooms to our already established bathroom business.

Norfolk & Suffolk Power Flushing Any of these symptoms in my advert could indicate that your central heating system has problems from internal corrosion, rust, sludge and scale.

This we feel will give our customer base the opportunity to purchase a kitchen, bathroom or bedroom through one established independent family local business based in Wymondham Norfolk.

Supreme Bathrooms can also offer a supply only alternative. If you have your own builder we can organise delivery of your new bathroom, kichen or bedroom at your own convenience.

This means our customers only have one port of call with their order, which leaves us to project manage all trades and labour involved in each installation contract giving the customer total piece of mind.

Why not get down to Supreme Bathrooms now to view our fantastic range where you can also book a free home survey if required.

The process involves connecting a power flushing pump to the existing central heating pump valves, or across the tails of a radiator.

This service will includes a home visit where we will measure your bathroom, kicthen or bedroom before discussing your requirements, which is then followed up by creating your design on our CAD system before offering you a complete package price to carry out all work.

Specialist chemicals are then pumped around the heating system to loosen and mobilise the unwanted debris.

Supreme Bathrooms have their own installation teams which take care of all trades including tiling, plumbing, electrics etc. Our showroom which currently displays around 80 bathrooms and showers will be refurbished in 2013 to accomodate kitchens and bedrooms to enhance our portfolio of products. We also have a large free car park.

February 2013

We even dispose of the old products and all rubbish before letting you sit back and enjoy your wonderful new Supreme bathroom, kitchen or bedroom.

A power flush can restore circulation and efficiency to your central heating system by removing these products.

Each radiator is then individually flushed until clean and on completion, an inhibitor is added to prevent further corrosion. The whole process is carried out with minimal disturbance and disruption. Should you invest into ISA’s? Quite often the answer to this question is yes you should but please speak to us to make sure that an ISA is the most suitable product for you. Your ISA allowance is a ‘use it or lose it allowance’ as it can only be used in each relevant tax year.

The limits can change each year and the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement indicated that the allowance will increase to £11,520 in the next tax year. The benefits of ISA’s are that the interest (cash ISA’s) and growth (equity ISA’s) is not subject to tax. Mostly everyone prefers investments with tax benefits so ISA’s quite often have an appeal. As the rules covering how much can be invested into a cash ISA (up to £5640) and how much of the total allowance can be invested into an equity ISA can be confusing, please speak to us if you need any help. Warm And Welcome Help For Vulnerable Residents With Norfolk firmly in winter’s icy grip, Breckland Council ward members have been out and about in Dereham, giving ‘Warm Packs’ to the town’s vulnerable residents. Breckland Council Executive Member for Planning and Environmental Services, Elizabeth Gould and William Richmond, Breckland Council member for Dereham - Neatherd, visited the Highfield Road Estate recently to meet older residents and distributed 20 of the packs. These contain essential items for colder weather such as blankets, hot water bottles and gloves. They explained that emergency heating oil, portable heater loans and low level home insulation are also available to vulnerable residents in the county through the ‘Warm and Well’ initiative, thanks to the latest tranche of central government funding secured by a partnership of councils and health and voluntary organisations. Fred Abrahams, of the local residents association, kindly helped the two councillors find residents on the estate who wished for a pack and said “It was

lovely to think local people would greatly benefit”. Ena Heal, of Stigands Gate, said she was “Overwhelmed with joy” and very grateful to receive a warm and well pack. Elizabeth Gould said “Warm and Well in Norfolk is a really effective and greatly needed initiative that has already helped hundreds of people, so it was great news that the Partnership has secured funding to roll it out for a second year.

the need for us all to keep a check on vulnerable people in our community who are living on their own”. If you know someone in Breckland who would benefit from a Warm Pack, please call Breckland Council’s Principal Housing Officer Gordon Partridge on 01362 656870. Help and advice is available on

the free Home Heat Helpline (0800 33 66 99). This connects people on low incomes with support which is worth an average of £160. The help available includes rebates, grants for insulation and new boilers, and advice on saving energy. You can find more information about the Warm and Well initiative on the Norfolk County Council website (www.norfolk.gov.uk).

We distributed about 1,000 of the Warm Packs in Breckland last year, and ran out in October, so the new supplies that arrived on Thursday are very welcome. “Keeping warm is essential for the health and wellbeing of our older and more vulnerable residents, but this can be extremely difficult on a tight budget. The packs are a simple but very effective way of providing immediate and practical assistance. This weather has highlighted

New Year, New Smile! The Importance of Oral Hygiene for Your Pet. Imagine how your teeth would look and how your breath would smell if you didn’t brush your teeth regularly - it’s the same for your pet. Unless you’re regularly providing some form of dental care you are neglecting an important part of pet care.

If plaque builds up and is left untreated your pet may develop the following symptoms: • • • • •

Offensive breath Red, swollen and painful gums Tartar Loose teeth Difficulty eating

Periodontal disease can have serious consequences on your dogs general health such as effects on liver, kidney and heart. You will be surprised to read that by the time most dogs are 2 years old they have already developed dental problems. Regular plaque removal, at home, will prevent the start of periodontal disease and tooth-brushing is considered the single most effective method. It is best to begin brushing from a young age, usually when a puppy or kitten is between 8 and 12 weeks

February 2013

although it is never too pate to start, even with geriatric pets. There are also several effective chews available on the market and one that we recommend is a Stag Bar which is a natural, long lasting antler chew that cleans the teeth whilst also being kind to sensitive stomachs. It is important to use products that are specifically designed for pets. Diet can also be a major factor in the development of plaque and tartar. Generally, dry food is best for the removal of plaque. It is thought that canned foods may actually contribute

to plaque build-up and subsequent periodontal disease. If you are at all concerned that your pet may show signs of the symptoms relating to periodontal disease then the first step would be to consult your vet. The Old Golfhouse Veterinary Group are currently offering free dental checks with their nurses and if your pet does require a dental procedure (under anaesthetic) then during February all of our dentals will receive a 25% discount on the procedure (the procedure must be performed during February and the offer does not include any pain relief or anti-biotics).

Citroën DS5 DStyle e-HDi 110 Airdream By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist THIS IS a fine medium sized car - especially where looks and seating comfort are concerned. It’s just a shame the six speed electronic gearbox blights an otherwise decent drive. In auto mode my DS5 demo was a bit like a rocking horse sliding downhill. It rocked forwards then backwards every time it went up or down a cog. However, using the automated manual paddle shifts all was well, but that kind of defeats the object of having a car that’s meant to change gear without you moving any body part unnecessarily. While I’m in gripe-mode, I have to say that if you want a vehicle with a bit of a bite, then don’t bother with the e-HDi 110 model. It’s so sluggish - 0-62mph comes in a painfully slow 12 seconds. But, grumbles out of the way, and as I mentioned in the opener, the DS5 is a looker. If you want a French fancy with lots of interior frills and features too, then the Citroën will work for you. console, whilst a tasteful analogue clock adds a touch of sophistication to the DS5’s interior. LED lighting appears throughout, bathing the controls in an ambient display of intermittent reds and whites. Acoustic treatments ensure a high-quality cabin atmosphere and insulation from road and wind noise is excellent thanks to laminated windows. Driven carefully (and let’s face it, how can you not drive this unhurried DS5 model sensibly?) then it’ll return up to 64.2mpg on an average run. This is partly due to the Airdream model’s Stop & Start micro-hybrid technology that reduces CO2 emissions by up to 15% when driving in congested areas. Other plus points consist of a three year, sixty thousand mile warranty and a maximum five star safety rating. So, would I pay £24,900 for a dawdling, fluffy, eco-hatchback? I suspect not; but my mind might well change if I get the chance to drive the DS5 mated to a manual gearbox. For me, even though the car’s slow on the uptake, the Citroën’s EGS six-speed gearbox is the real fly in the ointment of an otherwise wellequipped, attractive motor.

MOTORING 21

Driving On Rural Roads There’s a great deal of satisfaction to be gained from driving skilfully on country lanes. There are other benefits too - there’s usually less traffic, fewer 30 mph speed limits, and some great scenery on offer, too. Here are a few tips to bear in mind when driving on Rural Roads.

impact. If you see warning signs for animals, take them seriously. They’re there for a reason.

Sharing the road: farm vehicles

Before you do overtake, make sure there’s no one lurking behind you who might decide he’s not going to wait for you to go by.

Sharing the road: tourists There are tractors, combine harvesters (most with drivers wearing ear defenders, so they won’t hear you) and other agricultural vehicles. They probably can’t go as fast as you want to go, but that doesn’t mean you should be on their tail, trying to get past as soon as possible. They can be long and wide, so build that into your pre-overtaking plan. Sharing the road: animals Expect to see dogs, horses, sheep, cows and other farmyard animals. They might be on the road because they’re being herded somewhere - or they might have escaped, making their behaviour entirely unpredictable. Also expect wild animals. A deer, for example, is a heavy animal and could cause significant damage to the front of your car or your windscreen, following a high speed

Holidaymakers like country lanes. They like the views and the space. But they’re not going to be in any hurry. Be ready to follow a car towing a caravan at slow speeds, especially in summer.

Don’t go anywhere until you have made a mirror check and a physical glance into your blind spot.

Overtaking advice A good overtake manoeuvre leaves nothing to chance. There’s no guesswork. You don’t even start overtaking until you have established exactly how and where the manoeuvre will end. Getting right up tight behind a slower vehicle won’t get you past it more quickly. In fact, by holding back you’ll get a much better view of the entire road and you’re more likely to see an opportunity to overtake safely.
