Regal Experience The next classic film show at the Wymondham Ex-Services’ Club (Regal Cinema) on Sunday November 18th (2.30pm) will be the Regal Experience’s contribution to Norfolk’s American Connections Year. Yankee Doodle Dandy, a stirring patriotic morale-boosting wartime film and a fabulous success at the time for Warner Brothers, will be the main feature.
There will also be the chance to view a display of rare Hollywood memorabilia from Cinema’s Golden Age (1920s-1950s), much of which has come direct from Tinseltown.
Made in 1942, the movie sparkles with James Cagney giving a magnetic performance as legendary vaudeville entertainer George M. Cohan. Cagney’s performance won him the Oscar for best actor at the Academy Awards for that year.
There will be a raffle in aid of the 389th Bomb Group Memorial Museum at Hethel.
The movie, an outstanding showbiz biopic, features a number of great songs, among them “Give My Regards to Broadway”, “Over There” and “Yankee Doodle Boy”. A short supporting film will show the ways in which a taste of Hollywood was brought to Norfolk in World War Two, including the film stars who visited the county during those turbulent times.

Annual Gift Presentation From Shadwell Estate A life-saving charity is to receive a significant donation which will boost funds and ensure the service can continue operating long into the future. On Friday, 28th September, the East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) received a cheque from Shadwell Estate Company Limited at Rowley Mile Racecourse in Newmarket, in recognition of their services to the Eastern region, in particular its rural communities and businesses. Mirza Al Sayegh, Chairman of Shadwell Estate Company Limited and Private Secretary to HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, will present the Rt. Hon. the Earl of Iveagh, Trustee of the EAAA, with a cheque representing the annual gift that has been made to the charity since 2007 and said: “We are pleased to make this modest contribution towards the costs of this invaluable service”.
Lord Iveagh commented: “The donation made by Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum is remarkable and the money will go towards potentially saving a number of lives across the eastern region”. “Unfortunately we get called out to many horse riding incidents, both in the racing community and with domestic riders, and we’re always bowled over by the support we receive from people in the racing industry”. “It’s only thanks to people like Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum that we can continue running our life-saving service and carry on helping those who find themselves in difficulty, when and where they need us most”.

Antique Street Fair Raises Thousands For Air Ambulance Charity A life saving charity has been presented with a donation which will mean they are able to treat more patients and the scene of their accidents across the region. The annual Halesworth Antiques Street Market has raised £5,000 for the East Anglian Air Ambulance; a significant donation which will mean more lives could be saved in Suffolk. Pip Duffy, Area Fundraising Manager for EAAA, said: “This donation roughly equates to the cost of two missions by the East Anglian Air Ambulance and will mean that, potentially, those who donated at the event could help to save the lives of two people in Suffolk.” “Miles and the team work really hard every year to put on this fantastic event. I can’t thank them enough for what they do to raise such valuable funds and this donation will really help us now we’re about to embark on flying to patients in the hours of darkness.”
Miles Lambert, who helped to organise the event, said: “We’d like to thank all those who contributed, be they stall holders, bucket collectors or the shop keepers who generously made a donation to the East Anglian Air Ambulance.” The antique street market, now in its twentieth year, took place on Sunday 26th August and had 85 stall displaying a wide range of antiques and collectibles. Money was raised through the sale of stall pitches and buckets were scattered around the market for donations from visitors. For further information about the work of the charity visit www.eaaa.org.uk or call 01473 745007 to speak to someone about volunteering for the charity or for assistance in running your own fundraising event.
Breckland Flower And Garden Club Barry Gayton visited the Club for the October meeting. His talk and slide show of autumn colour for the garden left most members wishing they had more room for all the shrubs and trees which give so many autumnal tints at this time of the year. As well as foliage he showed an array of orange, white and red berried plants which, of course, bring in the birds as well as being decorative. The winner of the new hands competition and the monthly
trophy was Alison Vivian, and the old hands class winner was Sylvia Briggs. Christine Hewson’s photograph was first in the table how. Next month’s meeting will be on Thursday 8th November at Old Buckenham Village Hall starting at 12.30pm. Further details of requirements to bring etc please contact Christine on 01953 454528.

Is Your Adviser Independent? Diss Bed Centre And Furniture Warehouse From 31st December 2012, there are changes afoot for the financial services industry that have been brought about by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) Retail Distribution Review (RDR) and every financial adviser will have to be classified as independent or restricted. Firms that provide independent advice must make recommendations based on a ‘comprehensive and fair analysis of the relevant market’ and provide ‘unbiased and unrestricted’ advice. Firms that cannot fully meet these requirements will be deemed to be offering restricted advice. We believe that being independent should give our clients a better chance of getting the most suitable product for them, from the most suitable company. We are currently independent financial advisers and from next year we will remain independent financial advisers. One of the other changes brought about by RDR is that all advisers will have to have an enhanced minimum level of qualification. This higher level of qualification and the changes by RDR may result in several advisers leaving the industry and the high

Breckland Residents Identify Council Priorities A series of public meetings have been held across the district designed to give residents the chance to show which services they value most and which the council could change or stop as it looks to save money. Over three weeks, Breckland Council held five open meetings and ran an online survey, asking people for their views on a number of money-saving and income-generating options. Over 300 people attended the meetings and almost 750 people completed the survey to have their say on where the District Council can make savings. Council leader William Nunn said: “We have gone out and genuinely involved people in identifying where there is scope for the Council to make savings. “When we produce our spending proposals, we will take into account the main points that the public has raised.” Before the consultation started the council identified ten services that the law will allow them to stop or reduce, and asked people to rank them in order of importance. The results show that residents value clean streets, community safety and CCTV in the
district. Bottom of the scale were arts and sport development and the council magazine, Breckland Voice. To generate income the council asked residents their views on raising council tax; Cllr Nunn continued; “We have worked hard for many years to keep Council Tax low but, in the current financial climate, increasing Council Tax is an option we have to consider.” Results of the consultation show 20.2 per cent thought Council Tax should stay the same, 32.9% wanted an increase that matched inflation and 46.9% wanted a tax increase to the maximum, which at the time of the consultation stood at 3.5%. However, under the plans unveiled at the Conservative party conference, local authorities that wish to increase council tax by more than 2% next year will have to hold a referendum.
to make money, with residents having three choices. 7.8% wanted the introduction of hourly fees so the car parks self-fund the annual £300,000 cost of running them, 41.4% said they would like to see the Council introduce parking fees with the first hour or possibly two free of charge, and 50.8% wanted to keep car parking in the district free. Cllr Nunn said: “Within the next five years our settlement from Central Government, which makes up the majority of our funding, will reduce by
about a third. We cannot continue to operate as we do now and it’s inevitable that we will have to stop, reduce or charge for many of the services we currently provide. The results of the survey will be used to inform the difficult decisions we have to make about short, medium and long-term budget planning.” Full results from the Could we, Should we consultation can be found at www.breckland.gov.uk.

Ear Safety This Guy Fawkes Night By Karen Finch RHAD FSHAA FRSA, Audiologist and Managing Director of The Hearing Care Centre Ltd. The days and nights around Fireworks Night are extremely hazardous to your ears. Fireworks can cost you your hearing. For the lucky ones, their hearing returns, but many must live with their hearing loss or tinnitus for the rest of their lives. There is no cure for noise induced hearing damage. But you can easily prevent it. Two thousandth of a second is all it takes for an exploding firecracker to put out the noise intensity to put your hearing at risk for life. The burst of noise is so short that you may not sense its true intensity.. Perhaps you love the thrill of fireworks, but you better watch out and be aware that*: • 1 in 10,000 people suffer permanent hearing damage because of fireworks • Young adults under the age of 25 are three times more likely than other groups to suffer fireworks related hearing damage • Men are three times more at risk than women
November 2012
Take Precautions Guy Fawkes Night will be celebrated but take care of yourself and each other. Use earplugs to protect your hearing. Simple off the shelf ear plugs would do the trick and for the little ones there are fantastic, inexpensive noise breaker headphones (as shown below). Make sure that no one else is standing too close when you light the fuse of your fireworks. Most of those suffering hearing damage did not cause it themselves. They suffered the bad luck of being too close to the fireworks of others. For more information on protecting your hearing, hearing loss or to purchase ear plugs please visit www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk or call 0800 096 2637. *These conclusions were based on a study of hearing injuries related to fireworks celebrations in Germany, 2000.
New Konectbus ....Double deckers are just the ticket! Konectbus have expanded their fleet with the acquisition of 5 brand new double decker buses. Having experienced significant growth on both new and existing routes, the Dereham-based bus operator has invested nearly £2m this year alone into its new vehicles to cater for its growing passenger numbers. The new super-low floor ADL Enviro400 buses carry up to 79 passengers and boast leather seats, wide step-free boarding areas and low emissions technology to minimise harmful pollutantsleading the way in innovative bus travel throughout Norfolk. Julian Patterson Operations & Commercial Director at Konectbus commented “our continued investment in brand new, stateof-the-art double deckers reinforces our quality and commitment to our customers and sustainable travel in Norfolk”. The latest 5 buses hit the road throughout October and November, providing greater capacity and comfort for Konectbus passengers on two of its busiest routesthe number 3, which operates from Watton to Norwich via Norwich & Norfolk University Hospital, and the number 6 which operates from Watton to Norwich via Wymondham. One of the new buses will be on display at Lemon Day, Wymondham on 3rd November for local residents to have
a look around. The bus will be used to transport Wymondham mayor, Councillor Robert McClenning, into Wymondham town centre, as part of the opening ceremony. New additions to the fleet are not the only thing Konectbus have to celebrate. They have just been shortlisted at the UK Bus Awards for ‘Putting passengers first’ due to the success of the re-launch of their Konectexpress 8 route from Dereham to Norwich. A lot of the success of the Konectexpress 8 has been down to achieving modal shift from the private car by providing a fast, reliable and high quality bus service with drivers that are dedicated to delivering exceptional customer service. The UK Bus Awards will be held on 20th November at the London Hilton Hotel, where Konectbus will await to hear if they have won. Alongside this, a passenger survey carried out by independent consumer watchdog Passenger Focus in September highlighted that an impressive 97% of Konectbus passengers were satisfied with the level of service received on their journey, further emphasising the impact of Konectbus’ customer-focused strategy. Did You Know, The Cost Of Energy Bills Have Soared By 140% In The Last Eight Years? And They Are About To Increase Again. The cost of household energy has risen seven times faster than household income since 2004, according to a recent study. The high costs are now the top household worry for Britons, ahead of the rising cost of food and mortgage payments. While the average UK household income has increased by 20% from £32,812 in 2004 to £39,468 today, the average energy bill has risen by 140%. Households were spending an average of £522 a year for their energy in 2004, but now pay £1,252 a year - 3.2% of income or double the 1.6% of eight years ago. The study found 83% of people believe that rising energy bills have had an impact on their disposable income, with 17% of these reporting that they no longer have any disposable income as a result and 27% saying energy bills have reduced their disposable income dramatically. Director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com Ann Robinson said: “This is the cold reality facing households today; in less than 10 years our energy bills have rocketed by 140%. The break-neck speed at which energy prices have sprinted upwards has caught many people unawares. Consumers are still playing catch-up. “Energy now accounts for a significant slice of household income which is why the numbers rationing their energy use have risen so steeply in recent years. But going cold or without is a short-term and potentially harmful fix and not a long-term solution.” So what can be done to reduce your household bills? You can control how much you spend on energy by making your home more energy-efficient and paying less for the energy you do use by moving to a competitively-priced energy plan. The Consumer magazine Which? has awarded Utility Warehouse with the best energy supplier award for the past 5 years. The survey looked at customer service, value for money and accuracy of bills, so perhaps this is a good starting point. The other great advantage of Utility Warehouse is they have a team of local authorised distributors who can conduct a FREE energy review. This will give you an immediate indication of what you are paying against what savings can be made, and as well as being completely free, it only takes around 15 mins. Savings can be made, you just need to put it into action. Call me now and let’s see how much you could reduce your energy bills by. Jonathan - 07802 690589

Since its humble beginnings in Melbourne, Australia Movember has grown to become a truly global movement inspiring more than 1.9 Million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas to participate with formal campaigns in Australia, New Zealand, the US, Canada, the UK, South Africa, Ireland, Finland, the Netherlands, Spain, Denmark, Norway, Belgium and the Czech Republic. In addition, Movember is aware of Mo Bros and Mo Sistas supporting the campaign and men’s health causes across the globe, from Russia to Dubai, Hong Kong to Antarctica, Rio de Janeiro to Mumbai, and everywhere in between. No matter the country or city, Movember will continue to work to change established habits and attitudes men have about their health, to educate men about the health risks they face, and to act on that knowledge, thereby increasing the chances of early detection, diagnosis and effective treatment. In 2011, over 854,000 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas around the world got on board, raising GBP 79.3 million. During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in the UK and around the world. The aim of which is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and testicular cancer. Once registered at movember.com each Mo Bro must begin the 1st of Movember with a clean shaven face. For the entire month each Mo Bro must grow and groom a moustache.
November 2012
There is to be no joining of the mo to the sideburns (that’s considered a beard), there’s to be no joining of the handlebars to the chin (that’s considered a goatee) and each Mo Bro must conduct himself like a true gentleman. A Mo Sista is essentially a woman who loves a Mo. An individual that is dedicated to supporting the Mo Bros in her life through their moustache growing journey; whether it be a friend, colleague, family member or partner. These inspirational women are committed to raising awareness of men’s health issues and much needed funds for men’s health along the way. Mo Bros effectively become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November and through their actions and words raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health. At the end of the month, Mo Bros and Mo Sistas celebrate their Movember journey throwing their own Movember parties or attending one of the Gala Partés held around the world to stand tall and celebrate the moustache. The funds raised in the UK are directed to programmes run directly by Movember and our men’s health partners, Prostate Cancer UK and the Institute of Cancer Research. We work with these partners to ensure that Movember funds are supporting a broad range of innovative, world-class programmes in line with our strategic goals in the areas of awareness and education, survivorship and research.

MOTORING REVIEW 21
BMW 640d Coupé M Sport By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Writer, Twitter: @carwriteups Visit: www.carwriteups.co.uk. THERE ARE people who can light up a room with their presence. They are good at building and maintaining relationships. They establish rapport quickly and effortlessly. It seems like everybody is their best friend. This BMW is just like that – but in the car sense. An exceptional twin-turbocharged diesel powerplant, a newly developed chassis and a host of class-leading driver assistance technology ensures that the new 640d M Sport Coupé, on test here, is full of substance, while interior space and comfort have been enhanced. Sat behind the chunky steering wheel, the car seems to exude a palpable sense of selfconfidence and positive energy. The switchgear and controls are sturdy, and the sat nav and iDrive controller are simple to use. Motoring enthusiasts will be instinctively drawn to the German 2+2 because of its nearly indefinable quality. I guess the latest 640d Coupé is the automotive equivalent of a person with a magnetic personality. The third generation model features a sweeping roofline while the long bonnet, short over-hangs, setback passenger compartment,
long wheelbase and flat waistline embody the typical proportions of a BMW coupé more than any other. From the rear, bulging wheel arches highlight the wide track of the car, alluding to its sporting performance and impressive road holding. Two-part rear light clusters give the typical BMW L-shape lights a particularly sporty, dynamic edge and, inside the units, two LED-powered light strips create an eye-catching night time look. In the front, the passenger area is bordered by a surface curving elegantly from the armrest over the centre console, upwards and outwards into the instrument panel and then into the door trim, surrounding the front passenger area with a feeling of exclusive security. The BMW is fitted with lightweight seats with an integrated seatbelt system and easy entry function to the rear passenger compartment: a brief tap of a switch automatically moves the seat as far forward as possible. Realistically, you won’t fit any longlegged or even average height adult passengers in the rear, but, for small children, the individual rear seats are ideal, providing ample shoulder and elbow room.
The boot can accommodate 460 litres of luggage, equivalent to three golf bags or two medium cases and a flight case. To utilise the rear space further the rear seats can be specified with a through-loading ski hatch, allowing two pairs of skis to be transported with ease.
The 6 Series Coupé went on sale in the UK in October 2011.
Of course, out on asphalt is where the 640d really impresses; powering the beast is one of the world’s sportiest diesel engines - a 3.0 litre twin-turbocharged in-line six-cylinder unit, producing 309bhp at 4,400rpm and 465 lb-ft of pulling power. The car has great traction and it needs it: the 640d Coupé M Sport is capable of accelerating from zero to 62mph in 5.5seconds, before topping out at an electronically limited 155mph.
• Performance • Cabin • Good looks • Efficiency
The BMW 640d Coupé is also fitted as standard with an eightspeed automatic transmission with auto start-stop and active air flaps behind the kidney grille. Such engineering expertise is the reason why the model offers zesty performance but can still achieve 51.4mpg on the combined cycle and record CO2 emissions of 145g/km.
BMW UK expects to sell around 1,100 models in its first full year with the diesel powered version accounting for 90 per cent of sales. PROS
CONS • Limited rear legroom FAST FACTS • Max speed: 155 mph • 0-62 mph: 5.5 secs • Combined mpg: 51.4 • Engine: 2993cc cc 6 cylinder twin-turbo diesel • Max. power (bhp): 309 at 4400 rpm • Max. torque (lb/ft): 465 at 1500 rpm • CO2: 145 g/km • Price: £66,745 on the road

Enjoy Old Age
Keeping Warm
Old age is not something society tends to view in a glowing and positive way most of the time; much of the advice concerning old age is about trying not to reach it and pretending that old age is something that won’t ever catch up with us.
Cold weather can lead to serious health problems such as heart attacks, strokes, pneumonia and depression.
But old age is a time to be celebrated as much as any other time in the full cycle of life For many people, it’s the first time in their lives where they have the chance to fully live without being burdened by the expectations and ideas of others. Don’t conform to age stereotypes. If you enjoy something, get out and do it. If health problems interfere, find ways to work around them and still get into the things that matter to you. Associate with groups of diverse people, not all in your age group. Don’t think of your life as over, look at your future and plan for it actively. Socializing with young people who share your interests is a good way to keep in balance and avoid getting socially sidelined. Practice the five principles of health. It might be tempting to say you’ve reached this point of life without worrying about your health habits but your best strategy for avoiding lengthy hospital stays and nursing home regimes is to look after yourself as much as possible. Treasure the health you have now and give it a boost by making sure that you stick the five basic principles of health:
Aim to be active every day for at least half an hour or one hour. Go walking, jogging, swimming, cycling or do intensive yoga. Visit a health center or have an exercise bike in the comfort of your own place. It could be said that if you sweat once a day, the illness keeps away! Cultivate happiness. In old age, inner happiness must be cultivated. Old age often brings energy loss, disease, a sense of meaninglessness, and worry about external problems over which you have no control. When the nerves are getting weaker, inner positivity is at great risk of declining. In old age, it’s necessary to make an effort to cultivate happiness through everyday exercises that can maintain both physical health and strengthen your inner happiness. Make the choice to stay involved with your continued growth rather than giving in to socially condoned decline.
The chances of these problems are higher if you’re vulnerable to cold-related illnesses because of one or more of the following: • you’re over 60 • you’re on a low income (so can’t afford heating) • you have a long-term health condition such as heart, lung or kidney disease
• Wrap up warm, inside and out. Several thin layers of clothes are better than one thick layer. Don’t forget to wear hats, gloves and scarves. If possible, stay inside during a cold period if you have heart or respiratory problems. • Keep active. Move around at least once an hour and don’t sit down for long periods of time. Even light exercise will help keep you warm.
• you are disabled How to stay warm
• Look out for elderly friends and neighbours. Check they’re safe and well through the winter.
• Keep your home warm. Your main living room should be between around 18-21C (64-70F) and the rest of the house at a minimum of 16C (61F).
Make sure they’re warm enough, especially at night, and have stocks of food and medicines so they don’t need to go out during very cold weather.
You can also use a hot-water bottle or electric blanket (but not both at the same time) to keep warm while you’re in bed.
If you are worried about a relative or an elderly neighbour, contact your local council or ring the Age UK helpline on 0800 00 99 66.
Read a book for one hour each day. There are many good books that can inspire you. Reading is the best trainer for maintaining a positive mind and for answering many of your probing questions, and is also a perfect means for controlling your negative thoughts Have a hobby.
1. Eat healthy. This includes eating raw vegetables and fruit every day. 2. Avoid or quit unhealthy substances and habits. If you haven’t already done so, now is the ideal time to give up taking drugs, excess alcohol, smoking, and over-eating. 3. Stay active. There are plenty of sports ideal for the older body, and many of these can also involve being around other people (and beautiful scenery if you choose your exercising location well). Try sports like walking, jogging, swimming, yoga, and aqua aerobics to maintain an optimal fitness level. 4. Practice positive thinking. 5. Take up meditation. If you’re not already meditating, this is the perfect time to start. It will settle your mind and any unrest like nothing else.
Life has purpose when you make choices about the things you want to do and then do them. A hobby is an excellent way to remain fulfilled and interested in what is happening around you. Inevitably, a hobby will always provide a way to reach out to others who are interested in the same hobby as you, thereby increasing your interaction with other people. It doesn’t matter what sort of hobby you have provided it is enjoyable, affordable, and is practiced with restraint. Love an animal. If you like pets, be sure to have one. The love, comfort, and connection with a pet is as important to you in old age as it was to you at any age. Animals don’t judge us the way people too, and animals don’t care what our age is provided we ensure they’re well fed, groomed, and loved. Choose a pet that is easy to care for and can be handled by you without a worry.

In the past when a person was discharged from hospital after treatment, many were given the choice to have a period of time in a convalescent care home.
Their main objective is to provide impartial advice together with a friendly and efficient service!!
• Powerchairs
They offer the service of a free, no obligation, home demonstration for all of their products to ensure they are suitable for your needs.
• Adjustable beds
• Rise & recline armchairs
• Bathlifts • 3 & 4 wheel walkers
Whilst their core business is the supply of new mobility scooters, they also have a selection of pre-owned scooters as they offer a part exchange service. In addition to mobility scooters, they can also supply the following: • Stairlifts • Powered wheelchairs
• Attendant and self propelled wheelchairs Apart from selling, they also offer a hire service, together with repairs, servicing and insurance work. NBR scooter brokers are accredited with Norfolk trusted traders which is organised by Norfolk County Council.
This transition period between hospital and home would build up independence, aid recuperation and would enable care staff to monitor that all was well thereby enabling the ‘patient’, after one or two weeks, to return home safely and confident. The convalescent home has now almost disappeared and national statistics show that, especially where older patients are concerned, the re-admission figures are high with many having to return to hospital within a month.

MOTORING REVIEW 29
Mercedes-Benz B 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY SPORT By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist. THINGS ARE changing in the world of motoring. Premium brand car manufacturers are offering smaller models - take the Audi A1 and the BMW 1 Series for example. Of course, Mercedes-Benz was ahead of many. After all, it introduced the entrylevel A-Class supermini in 1997. Then in 2005 the B-Class, essentially an enlarged A-Class, was ushered in. Why? Well, sometimes you just need a luxury car that sits more towards medium than mini. And that’s what the B Class is all about. But time doesn’t stand still, and Mercedes felt a change of direction was needed for the B Class this year. The German motor maker has made the car more agile and efficient by lowering its height. Also, as is the case with the 200 CDI on test here, a new diesel engine has been fitted alongside a more modern manual transmission. So, what’s the revised B-Class like? Well, it’s a typical Mercedes sports tourer, offering bags of room, combined with the dynamic performance of a hatchback saloon. The character lines of the exterior point to both of these qualities: the front and rear demonstrate width-
Follow On Twitter: @carwriteups
emphasising design, with a prominent grille and headlamps extending along the sides at the front, while the rear end has a broad rear window, two-piece tail lights and a big tailgate with low loading sill. The fresh, athletic, lines and the aerodynamics are particularly apparent in the side line: the bonnet flows flawlessly into the A-pillar and the roof line descends neatly to the attractive roof spoiler. At the bottom edge the body includes side skirts which add a soft touch to the car’s form, whilst sophisticated details, such as the deftly designed headlamps, confirm the marque’s distinctive first-rate credentials. Naturally, and as you would expect of a quality European car producer, the BClass is as nice on the inside as it is on the outside. High-quality materials and finely structured surfaces abound. Three air vents in the middle of the dash with their unique cruciform nozzles add a particularly sporty element to the interior’s design. Other touches such as a threespoke leather trimmed steering wheel and seats with contrasting stitching are very pleasing to the eye. Interestingly, in response to requests from many customers, the sitting position is now more upright in the reborn B-Class. This makes for great visibility when you’re behind the wheel. Indeed, the more erect seating arrangement, in combination with a lowering of the vehicle’s floor at the rear, leads to a degree of legroom which even surpasses that of the Mercedes-Benz S and E-Class. On the move the B 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY SPORT is incredibly nimble. You’d think that would make it pleasurable on twisty rural routes. Well it does in a way, but it doesn’t make for comfortable
Visit: www.carwriteups.co.uk.
driving. You see, in ‘Sport’ guise the car’s suspension is far too harsh and, because it also sits on 18 inch alloys, it crashes and bangs over the slightest change of road surface. Mind you, if you don’t mind having your fillings rattled out of your molars then the car is great fun to throw around corners. It’s also fantastic for motorway mile munching. That’s when the car magically decides to ignore any road imperfections and comfort levels resume to what you might expect from Mercedes-Benz. Needless to say, if you do a lot of driving, then safety should be at the forefront of your mind when buying a car. The B-Class goes the extra mile in this respect. As well as the usual supply of airbags and protective gadgetry, it features a radarbased collision warning system with adaptive Brake Assist, which lowers the risk of rear-end crashes. The Collision Prevention Assist technology gives out a visual and acoustic warning to alert you to obstacles and prepares Brake Assist for the most precise possible braking response. This is initiated as soon as you forcefully operate the brake pedal. In contrast to some systems currently on the market the new Collision Prevention Assist feature is not merely intended to minimise minor damage in urban traffic. Instead, this innovative solution is aimed at protecting you from typical rear-end collisions in hazardous traffic situations. Mercedes-Benz says it expects the safety system to have a “significant positive effect” on accident statistics. As well as being a lively, safe, family oriented number, the B 200 CDI never forgets it comes from pedigree stock. It offers internet access, voice control, sat-nav and MP3 connectivity. Traditionally these executive features were the reserve of luxurious Euro-barges.
Now you can indulge yourself without having to fork out for one. Oh, and there’s one other advantage of driving a B-Class - it’s so much easier to park compared with a more extravagant motor. Let’s face it; once you’ve battled the morning rush hour, and the only parking bay left is the awkward one in the corner, you’re going to be thanking yourself you didn’t think bigger was better when you walked into that Mercedes-Benz showroom. PROS • Agile • Well designed • Safe • Good legroom CONS • Harsh ride FAST FACTS • Max speed: 130 mph • 0-62 mph: 9.5 secs • Combined mpg: 64.2 • Engine: 1796 cc 4 cylinder 16 valve turbo diesel • Max. power (bhp): 132 at 3600-4400 rpm • Max. torque (lb/ft): 221 at 1600-3000 rpm • CO2: 121 g/km • Price: £24,710 on the road

Winter Motoring Checklist Prepare for the worst and hope for the best. The last two winters have seen widespread snow and ice for weeks on end with temperatures regularly falling below -10C. You’re more likely to break down in a bad winter - the AA had its busiest day ever on Monday 4th January 2010 and then again, less than 12 months later, on Monday 20th December 2010 when
AA patrols handled more than 28,000 breakdowns. There’s more risk of delays too but not necessarily in the way you’d expect. If vehicles ahead lose control - a jackknifed lorry for example - you won’t be able to get through no matter how well equipped your car is with winter tyres or chains. You could face a wait of several hours until the blockage and other traffic ahead has been cleared. Here’s what you need to do this winter to reduce the risk of a breakdown and make sure that you are equipped to deal with the conditions. Check your car: • Antifreeze - check coolant level regularly and, if required, top-up with a mixture of the correct type of antifreeze. Your garage should check concentration to ensure adequate cold temperature protection. • Battery - the most common cause of winter breakdowns. A battery more

than five years old may struggle in the cold - get it checked and replaced if necessary to avoid the inconvenience of an unplanned failure. • Fuel - keep at least a quarter of a tank in case of unexpected delay.
• Locks and door seals - stop doors freezing shut with a thin coat of polish or Vaseline on rubber door seals. A squirt of water dispersant (WD-40) in locks will help stop them freezing. You and your passengers
• Lights - check and clean all lights regularly to make sure you can see and be seen clearly. Carry spare bulbs. • Tyres - should have at least 3mm of tread for winter motoring. Consider winter tyres for improved safety. Check pressures at least every fortnight. • Windscreen - reduce dazzle from the low sun by keeping the screen clean inside and out. Now is a good time to renew worn wiper blades. • Screen wash - use a 50% mix of a good quality screen wash to reduce the chance of freezing in frosty weather.
Prepare for the worst and hope for the best. As well as the things you should be carrying on every journey regardless of the weather, you should make up a winter emergency kit to keep in the boot - hopefully you won’t need it but you will be very glad it’s there if you do. Year-round essentials • Fully-charged mobile phone and in-car charger • Sunglasses – to deal with glare from the sun or snow • Personal medication • Warning triangle
