Raise The Flag For Kett! Wymondham Regal August saw the launch of “Raise the Flag for Kett!” - a joint venture between Norfolk Adult Education, Wymondham Library and Wymondham Heritage Museum. The aim of the project is to create a stream of flags or banners telling the story of the Kett Rebellion in 1549, and any one over the age of 19 who lives in or around Wymondham is welcome to join in. The journey starts with a free hour long guided tour of the museum to see the rich

and varied history of Wymondham come to life. They can then join one of our friendly, informal craft sessions in the Museum or Library. Anyone is welcome, be they experienced crafters or complete beginners, as one of the aims of the project is for people to share skills and learn from one another. Voluntary and community groups are also very welcome to take part, and the guided tours can be organised especially, to suit their needs. A Night To Remember. Widely regarded as the silver screen’s definitive version of the sinking of the Titanic, will be presented by the Regal Experience on Sunday 23rd September (2.30pm) at the Wymondham ExServices Club (Regal Cinema). The show marks the 100th anniversary of the gigantic disaster. An immense drama of vivid realism, the movie tells the story through the recollections of survivors. Whilst the star of the 1958 film is Kenneth More, there are a handful of cameo appearances, notably from Honor Blackman and David McCallum. There will be a full supporting

programme and John Balls, who has researched the Titanic for many years, will appear on stage to talk about it. Among his books on the subject is ‘Titanic - the Norfolk Survivors’. A gigantic model of the Titanic built by Robin Burrows which has previously been on show at the Forum in Norwich and other venues, will be on display. Tickets for the show are available from Simply Cards Market Street, Wymondham and Maureen Dodman (01953 605593) and Michael Armstrong (01953 603246).

Awards Recognition For Rosedale An independent local funeral home has received national recognition for its family values. Rosedale Funeral Home has been shortlisted for a prestigious Red Ribbon Award, having impressed the judges with its innovation, community links, business success and customer service. Run by fifth generation funeral director Anne Beckett-Allen and her husband Simon, Rosedale Funeral Home has six branches across South Norfolk and North Suffolk making it one of the most successful independently owned funeral homes in the region. “It was wonderful to be nominated and we’re over the moon to have been shortlisted,” said Anne BeckettAllen, who set up Rosedale seven years ago, alongside respected local funeral directors Derrick Leeder and Richard Green, after experiencing the profit-first focus of the corporate funeral giants that dominate the industry.

September 2012

“The large corporates are very active in our sector and we pride ourselves on having the flexibility and personal touch that our customers appreciate. Running a family business can be a challenge, especially when you’re on call 24/7 but I wouldn’t swap it for the world,” she added. Recommended by the Good Funeral Guide, Rosedale is also the only Norfolk name in the newly-published Natural Death Handbook’s directory of ‘flexible’ funeral directors. Rosedale branches are in Diss, Wymondham, Attleborough, Beccles, Bungay and Halesworth. Winners of the Red Ribbon Awards will be announced at a gala dinner in London in November. www.rosedalefuneralhome.co.uk www.familybusinessplace.co.uk

Sir David Jason Pledges Support For National Air Ambulance Week 24th - 30th September 2012. One of Britain’s most famous and respected actors Sir David Jason is getting behind the first united National Air Ambulance Week. Sir David has come a long way from his days as an electrician; since then he has won many prestigious awards for his work, with roles greatly varying from the comical Del Boy in Only Fools and Horses, to the more serious role of Jack Frost in A Touch of Frost. Sir David became interested in flying when he was young and has a keen interest in space exploration and all things aeronautical. He started out his own flying experience in gliders and then progressed to helicopters. Because of this keen interest Sir David became involved with the Association of Air Ambulances (AAA) and in March 2009 was asked, and

agreed, to lend his support to the work of air ambulance charities by becoming Patron of AAA. Speaking of his involvement, Sir David said: “I am honoured to be fronting the very first united National Air Ambulance Week campaign across the UK. It is vitally important that we spread the word that air ambulance charities up and down the UK are not Government funded and rely on public donations to remain operational. Everyday lives are being saved by the highly skilled air ambulance crews. Please give whatever you can spare to support your local air ambulance.” The heart of the week long appeal will be very much encouraging the communities

Gary Howard Gary Howard is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, founder of Howard & Company and author of “Why Businesses Stop Growing and What You Can Do About It”. And now business activist........ I was reading in my Institute’s magazine that Sir Michael Darrington has set up a campaign to axe excessive executive pay. This is something that has my 100% support! Sir Michael ran Greggs bakery for nearly 25 years; a company that employs 19,000 people. He points out that during the last 12 years inflation has run at 40%, average wage increases at 50%

and businesses across the country to support their local air ambulance charity. By doing so it will make a huge difference and effectively help to save lives in the community that you live in. Every penny really goes a long way in helping save lives. National Air Ambulance Week is an initiative put together by the Association of Air Ambulances (‘AAA’), the trade body which unites not only Air Ambulance charities from across the country, but also operators and ambulance services. The Association gives a national voice to a local service. Clive Dickin, Director of the Association of Air Ambulances (AAA) said: “We are delighted to have Sir David Jason as our Patron. It really does help us to raise awareness of our members and the essential work that they carry out locally. Our members are encouraging fundraising very much at a grass roots level. Fundraising should be fun!”

The East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) is encouraging its supporters to raise money by hosting their own Come EAAA-T With Me dinner party in their own home. Helen Dodman from EAAA said: “We’d love people to have a fun evening and then donate what they think the meal was worth to the charity but whatever you decide to do, rest assured that all monies raised will stay local, helping to keep your local air ambulance flying.” If you’d like further details on holding a Come EAAA-T With Me dinner party, or would like to request a fundraising pack contact Helen on 01473 745007 or email helen.dodman@eaaa.org.uk To show your support and find out more about how you can help your local air ambulance please log onto the AAA website at www.aoaa.org.uk/naaw.

www.DispatchMagazine.co.uk

Preparing For An Interview If you are going for an interview your application must have made a good impression. Be sure to prepare yourself for the interview to make sure you are successful. Research the company Prior to an interview you should spend some time researching the company. This will give you confidence should you be asked any question on what the company does. This will also enable to comprise any

questions you have about the company. Research can be done by contacting the company to ask for an information pack or you could look at their website. Plan for the interview Find out what the interview will involve to make sure you’re prepared. How long the interview is likely to last will give you an

idea of how detailed the interview will be. If the person who would be your manager if you got the job is conducting the interview, the interview may be more detailed. If it’s the personnel manager, the interview may be less detailed but could still be as testing. Find out how many people will be interviewing you and their positions in the company. This will help you prepare for the kinds of questions they may ask. Plan your journey You do not want to be late! Consider travelling to the company the day before the interview to check how long the journey will take. Creating the right image Deciding what to wear for the interview will depend on what sort of work you will be doing. Decide what to wear and get your clothes ready the day before. You don’t have to buy a new outfit. Aim for a neat, clean and tidy appearance, if you look good it will help you feel good. Gather together the information you’ll need at the interview. Remember to take a copy of your CV or application form to refer to. Prepare notes to help if think you might need a prompt during the interview. Take items the employer has asked you to bring along - for example: references, certificates or your driving licence. Re-read the job advert to refresh your memory and to make sure you haven’t missed anything.

September 2012

On the day Before you leave Give yourself plenty of time to get ready and make sure you’ve got all the relevant paperwork with you. If you are delayed, contact the employer as soon as possible to explain, apologise and arrange another appointment. When you arrive You should aim to arrive about ten minutes before the interview time. When you arrive give your name to the receptionist or whoever is there to greet you. Try to relax and keep calm, chat to the receptionist, or whoever greets you before going into the interview. This will help calm you and remember that the interviewer can be just as nervous as you. At the interview Accept that it is natural to be nervous and that you may have a fast heartbeat, clammy hands and ‘butterflies’ in your stomach. These are your body’s natural way of meeting a challenge, and in small doses it can help you. You will make an impression in the first few minutes. It takes this time for people to assess you and store this information. Once you have made a first impression, it’s hardly ever changed. It’s important to make a good first impression. If you’re nervous your voice may sound shaky and squeaky. Practise deep, slow breathing before you get to the interview. This will slowdown your heart rate and help you avoid taking quick shallow breaths.

Facebook and Twitter are great for making your presence apparent in the social media community and sites like Linkedin help you build a solely business-based profile.

We at Hood Vores & Allwood recognise that Separation and Divorce can be a painful and unsettling time for you and your children, both emotionally and financially. Many individuals are familiar with the Legal Aid, but are unaware that the legal costs incurred under this scheme are often repayable by you upon conclusion of your case, plus interest currently at 8%. There is no way of knowing accurately how much these charges might be. We recognise that this gives cause for uncertainty. Hood Vores & Allwood understands that having to repay your legal costs from your divorce settlement can restrict your planning for the future and impact on your financial position after divorce. Family law work can be unpredictable in terms of legal costs, which is why, where possible, we have devised a range of Fixed Fee Services for certain areas of our

If you have a small business then you may already be using social media to gain notoriety. Another interesting quality of Pinterest, which sets it apart from other social media is its popularity system.

However, if you’re looking to gain some popularity in a slightly different social circle with a slightly different approach, you should look into Pinterest.

The popularity of your pins isn’t based on how many ‘friends’ you have or how many people ‘like’ your page, but instead, the amount of people who find your individual posts interesting enough to ‘repin’.

Instead posting to your ‘wall’, you pin items - images and videos - to your ‘board’.

This is not dissimilar to ‘retweeting’, repinning a post from another user will pin their post to your board.

The emphasis being on ‘pinning’ as the site behaves more like a social bookmarking tool than a social networking tool.

Although it may seem something of a niche area, used properly Pinterest can be a powerful business tool for attracting attention to your company.

If they are not in good condition they will not be able to carry the guttering, which can be heavy after heavy rain fall. Can you ignore a bit of rot at the ends? – No the rot will almost certainly progress further. Your Fascia, Soffit and Guttering can be replaced in UPVC which now comes in several different colours and effects.

September 2012

When should you replace your windows? There are a few clear signs that can help you reach a decision. Ask yourself the following questions: Do your windows have condensation or a frost build-up? If you touch the interior pane of glass is it cold in the winter or warm in the summer? When next to your window does it feel colder than the rest of the house?

Do your windows ever get stuck or won’t stay closed or open? Are you unhappy with the way your windows look? If you answered yes to any of the questions above, it is time to replace your windows. Replacement windows help reduce your heating and cooling bills and provide better UV protection - The money saved means they will have soon paid for themselves. Getting windows that look the way you want can increase the resale value of

your home as well as create a more aesthetically pleasing environment. J C Homework’s speciality is Fascias, Soffits and Guttering, however they are able to undertake all general property maintenance. Being fully insured and holding a CSCS Health and Safety Certificate enables them to do all jobs big or small, from repairing a gutter to a full house renovation. Owners of trees should try to keep an eye out for any that appear on or near to the base of their tree/trees as some can be a sign that the tree is unsafe. Some of these fungi feed on live wood, others on dead wood. Removing the fungus in a bid to help an affected tree is pointless as the fungus is inside the wood and what we see is actually the fruiting body which contains the spores or seeds. The significance of a fungus on or near to the base of a tree depends upon many factors. These include the tree species, type of fungus, location of the tree and size of the tree. It is always a good idea to seek the advice of a tree surgeon to identify a

fungus and assess the safety of an affected tree. Felling is not always necessary. Sometimes monitoring alone is sufficient. In some circumstances tree surgery may be appropriate. This might involve reducing the overall size of the canopy and possibly thinning out the crown. Both reduce the effects of the wind on a tree and reduce the risk of the tree failing. Finally, owners of mature trees with ivy covering their stems should consider that this can mask the presence of a fungal fruiting body and the decay associated with it. Quite often the canopy is healthy so without being able to inspect the trunk detection may be impossible. Ivy removal is therefore sometimes recommended. Wymondham Tree Services will be pleased to assist you in the management of your trees and hedges.

Questions & Answers.

At Dapper Dogs it’s very spacious, a friendly environment and an air conditioned salon to help keep your dogs comfortable.

Q: What is Taylors Petfoods number 1 tip when choosing dog or cat food? A: Judge a food by its ingredients and not by its packaging or brand.

A: Yes. More often than not its costs less to feed an ultra premium food bought from a specialist pet retailer than a supermarket style brand.

Q: What are “meat and animal derivatives”? A: Generally ground up carcasses from any warm blooded animal passed as fit for human consumption. This ingredient is normally found in cheap pet foods.

Q: Are most cats and dogs fed by specialist pet retailers? A: No, surprisingly less than 30% of dogs and cats are fed by specialist pet retailers.

Q: What ultra premium foods do Taylors Petfoods recommend? A: All pets and owners are different but generally Taylors Petfoods recommend Autarky, Barking Heads, Meowing Heads, Taylors Own Premium Label, Green Dog, Acana, Natures Menu, Naturediet Skinners and Vitalin. Q: Are these foods available from the supermarket? A: These foods are only available from specialist pet retailers. Q: Can I feed an ultra premium dog or cat food for less than a supermarket style brand?

Dapper Dogs is open between MondayFriday 9am until 5pm and occasional Saturdays to suit everyones needs. We have a lot to offer whether it’s just anal glands/nail clippings/ a brush or just simply a soothing bath; we are here for your dog and your needs. We groom all breeds and cater for all temperaments and style to your dogs requirements. So if you have any

questions or queries call us on 01953 453459 or just pop in and see us. We are located in the centre of Attleborough between The Flower Box and the Griffin. We shall look forward to seeing you soon.

Q: My pet is a bit hyper. Can my pet’s food cause this? A: Many pet behavior specialists have linked hyper activity with colourings and additives found in some pet foods. Q: My pet’s skin is very itchy. What can cause this? A: A big cause for itchy skin is a pet’s diet. Many pets commonly develop sensitivity to wheat and beef. It takes up to 6 weeks on a beef and wheat free diet to start relieving the symptoms. Taylors Petfoods - Better for your pet and your pocket.

Toyota Avensis Tourer By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist Twitter @carwriteups Visit: www.carwriteups.co.uk. TOYOTA’S 2012 AVENSIS is a work of genius - especially in Tourer guise. True, not so long ago, the Avensis once looked bland and, more often than not, had a ‘minicab for hire’ sign glowing from its roof – but now the car is handsome enough for people to stop and ask what it is. I’ve had this happen a couple of times with the T Spirit Tourer 2.2 D-CAT Auto model I drove. In fact one guy asked if it was a Lexus. ’Not far off’, I said. He was utterly amazed the car was a Toyota. You see, the pronounced snout, the wrap-around headlights with integrated LED strips, combined with the car’s long, sleek body, make the Avensis Tourer one of the best looking estate cars on the market. From a purely aesthetic point of view, little touches such as privacy glass at the rear and the sort of alloy wheels you’d expect to buy as an optional extra are the icing on the cake. Inside, the car is a match for many German executive motors. Soft touch materials cover the cabin, complemented with a nickel and wood

effect centre console. A leather steering wheel, air conditioning, and automatic handbrake add another tier of quality, but Toyota’s Touch and Go integrated multimedia and navigation system is the showpiece of the interior. A standard feature of the top-of-therange T Spirit model, Toyota Touch and Go Plus, broadens the functionality and versatility of the company’s usual system to include access to email, advanced traffic data, improved mapping, and voice recognition. On the road, the 2012 Avensis is one of the best commuting machines out there. It glides over bumps and eats up motorway miles without any effort at all. The dials and switches on the dash and on the steering wheel are very clear and simple to use, and the automatic gearbox, which was fitted to my test model, is smooth and a doddle to operate. The seating position is high, but comfort is top notch, helped by an exceptionally effective electric lumbar support system. Okay, the light steering can be a little less than successful at communicating what’s going on beneath the wheels,

but it makes driving easy - especially when weaving through traffic or parking. And when it comes to loading up, the boot is massive (543 litres). It’s low, wide and long, with lots of space for anything from exhibition display boards to the family’s holiday luggage. The Avensis, which is built exclusively at Toyota’s UK factory in Burnaston, Derbyshire, is so good that it is now exported to Japan.

It explains why the Toyota Avensis Tourer was named as winner in the Family Estate category in the Parkers Cost of Motoring New Car Awards, 2012. It’s certainly a car worth considering for business or for family motoring. It’s a cracker - I promise you.

‘What?’ I hear you ask, ‘Isn’t it Japanese anyway?’ Well, yes, but demand for European styling and engineering from Japanese customers has prompted Toyota’s decision to introduce the Avensis to the ‘home’ market. In fact, the launch of the third-generation Avensis to the native land of Toyota simply strengthens the performance of the UK plant, which already ships the model to 47 countries worldwide.

PROS

So, despite starting off as boring back in 1997, the Avensis is proving to be one of the most popular cars around. By the end of 2010, more than 1.8 million Avensis vehicles had been built - all at Burnaston.

• Max speed: 127 mph • 0-62 mph: 9.8 secs • Combined mpg: 43.5 • Engine: 2231 cc 4 cylinder 16 valve turbo diesel • Max. power (bhp): 148 at 3600 rpm • Max. torque (lb/ft): 250 at 20002800 rpm • CO2: 173 g/km • Price: £29,205 on the road

And now, with a major new look and extensive changes for 2012, the

September 2012

Toyota Avensis Tourer has propelled itself to the top of its class to be best for value. New, more efficient engines not only mean lower emissions but better fuel consumption and are a key improvement over the older model.
