Norfolk & Suffolk Power Flushing

A Look At Motor Insurance!

Has your central heating system developed problems?

Whether you are a convicted driver, young driver, or have limited no claims bonus, we can find the policy cover specific to your requirements.

A power flush can restore circulation and efficiency to your central heating system by removing these products. The process involves connecting a power flushing pump to the existing central heating pump valves, or across the tails of a radiator.

Specialist chemicals are then pumped around the heating system to loosen and mobilise the unwanted debris. Each radiator is then individually flushed until clean and on completion, an inhibitor is added to prevent further corrosion. The whole process is carried out with minimal disturbance and disruption.

We have negotiated special rates with our panel of Insurers for those careful drivers and special introductory discounts for those without any no claim bonus. We are always able to offer instalment facilities. We deal with many leading UK and Lloyds Underwriters to provide the best possible quotation and cover for our clients, regardless of the risk. Being totally independent means that we are not tied to a single provider and this allows us access to a range of insurance policies from our panel

The Truth About Wills, Trusts and Estate Planning Make a New Year’s resolution that you can keep There are several different professionals in the marketplace that may deal with different aspects of a client’s planning. Very few will deal with all of these:

educational seminars this year (to be held at Dunston Hall, Norwich) and the provisional dates are Thursday 13th March and Thursday 17th Juy.

There is no cost to you for a consultation or to attend a seminar, so if you are at all interested in having a consultation or attending a seminar, please contacts us.

Yes, we can help and advise in all these areas. So much so we would welcome an oppertunity to discuss with you and any concers you may have. We are also planning some

With our experience we find that quite often clients will make simple Wills and DO NOT take account of all their circumstances, hence all the contingencies are not covered.

We have not come across any clients yet that like paying too much tax or are prepared to lose their home through long term care BUT clients need to take ACTION to stop these happening.

A review will cost you nothing. It could be the best resoultion you could ever make and may provide permanent solutions for you!

This is where we can help and where we are qualified to give advice. So 2014 is now upon us, if you want to make a New Years resolution that you can keep, contact us to review the Wills and Lasting Power of Attorney’s you have and take action to put effective planning in place.

Kerry Butcher Accountancy Services Finally January is over and we can start to think about spring and summer holidays. January was a miserable month – full of dark cold weather and thinking about how much tax was owed. Now your tax return is done and dusted – except did you know that it is actually only just over a month until the next tax year finishes. Wouldn’t it be nice to get ahead this year? How good would it be to reach December and know that you don’t have to worry about your accounts or your tax return as they are all taken care of? How smug could you be? Well the earlier you can get your books and records together and pass them on to us here at KBA the easier it is to make sure that you can be one of those smug people! Of course it’s not all about tax returns – 5 April 2014 sees the end of the first year of Real Time for Pay as You Earn. HMRC relaxed their penalties for the first year of RTI which meant that if you were late filing a return, you didn’t have any fines to pay. From 6 April 2014 this all changes – so maybe now is a

February 2014

good time to start thinking about using a payroll provider. Our payroll service is offered for weekly, fortnightly or monthly paid employees and we offer a range of services starting at as little as £10 (plus VAT) per payroll run. It really is as simple as sending us an email and we can do your payroll for you. “What are the benefits of being a limited company?” This is one question we get asked a lot. There are actually quite a few benefits of being limited but there are also some drawbacks too. Being limited can be a really good idea and setting up a company is really easy but make sure that this is the right decision for your business. Why not come and have a chat with us before you make that final decision? And don’t forget if you do go limited; we can be your registered office address at NO COST! Do you know what your annual turnover is? What about your rolling monthly turnover? Are you sure that you are

below the VAT threshold? What is the current VAT threshold? It is really important to make sure that you keep an eye on all of these things as the VAT threshold is based on a rolling year– not just the accounting year. So if you have been busy over the past few months and business has picked up – enjoy the celebrations but just check that you don’t need to become VAT registered. Remember the threshold is calculated on turnover and not profit – why not come and talk to us to put your mind at rest. We can prepare figures for you – discuss the best VAT schemes available and

complete the registration process on your behalf and that is before you even complete your first VAT return. Don’t forget that there are special rules for what you can claim in your first return too. So don’t miss out. Here at KBA we constantly strive to make your business better and to keep all of our clients happy. If you are happy then our job is done. If we can help with any of the topics mentioned then why not give us a call 01953 457173 or email kerry@kerrybutcher.co.uk. Why not make 2014 the best year ever!

Designing A Future In Norfolk There’s no place like home for Wymondham based graphic design company KSD Associates. Having returned to his Norfolk roots two years ago, owner Kevin Smith is taking the business from strength to strength and is committed to helping support the local economy.

were happening elsewhere in the country. I trained at Norwich School of Art & Design and have always felt a strong affinity with Norfolk. So I relocated the business and we’ve never looked back.”

Since KSD started trading 10 years ago, the world of graphic design has changed dramatically. London’s dominance as the ‘place to be’ is rapidly diminishing. With digital artwork and online communications, graphic design agencies like KSD can be effective anywhere in the country, offering high quality service to local businesses as well as a wider national marketplace.

Closer relationships

As a result, regional cities such as Norwich have become hubs of design excellence, with the creative energy they generate inevitably pulsing out into the wider regional community. “Having worked in London agencies, it seemed natural for me to choose a base close to the capital when I launched KSD a decade ago,” says Kevin. “However, two years ago I realised that, mainly because of the internet revolution, exciting things

Being close at hand, Kevin can get to know his Norfolk based clients better, to understand how their businesses work and what they are aiming to achieve. “There’s no substitute for personal contact, “ he says. “I like to build close working relationships with my clients. I’m also committed to using local suppliers and partners to help support the regional economy.” With lower overheads, KSD can offer high standards of creativity and project management at an affordable price. Therefore, as well as continuing to work with existing London-based clients, the company can cost-effectively service the needs of local businesses who may have limited marketing budgets.

“It’s all about matching our skills to the available spend“ asserts Kevin. “Because we combine creativity with commercial awareness, we can create eye-catching yet practical solutions for anything from a full marketing campaign to a brochure, website or e-shot.” An integrated approach As well as taking advantage of increased mobility, KSD has also embraced the opportunities available in online design media. Most businesses are now integrating new and traditional marketing methods.

That’s why we think laterally, combining online and offline media to create impact and get maximum response.” The results speak for themselves. KSD has successfully designed everything from brochures for skiing holidays to websites for organisations that run religious missions, from branding and identity for small service businesses to e-newsletters for major corporations. So what does the future hold for this dynamic business? “As long as the world continues to move forward, so will we,” confirms Kevin.

Therefore, to be competitive graphic design companies must offer a one-stop service to provide coherent, cohesive strategy and execution.

“Right now everyone’s talking about apps for smartphones and tablets. Then there are revolutionary new technologies, such as augmented reality”

“We’ve evolved our business for today’s world,” explains Kevin. “We understand how important the web and social media have become to many companies. Yet we know that traditional marketing methods still have an important role to play”

“Whatever the next big thing is, we’ll take it and run with it. The media may change, but good design never goes out of fashion.” Tel - 01953 601757

New Year, New Bed...? Did you sleep well last night? Do you feel refreshed and ready to start the day? For most of us a third of our life is spent asleep, meaning the wear on our mattress over time is considerable, yet a staggering 25% of people wouldn’t consider changing their mattress – even after more than 10 years.* It is hardly surprising then that 58% of the population complain of waking feeling stiff and achy.* How do you know if you need to replace your bed? Here’s a few signs that you should notice • Is your bed more than 7 years old? • Is it uncomfortable? Or when you sleep in someone else’s bed, does that feel better than your own? • Do you wake in the morning with a painful back or stiff limbs? • Can you feel the springs beneath the surface of the mattress? • Do you and your partner roll together? • Is your mattress just generally warn and discoloured? If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, then it could be time to invest in a new bed!

One of the keys to having a healthy and happy life is SLEEP! Sleep is required to allow our bodies to recover, help our brains work correctly and can even help you lose weight. The right environment is essential for a good nights sleep, your room should be dark, quiet and warm. At Sound Sleep, we are mattress specialists. We have an extensive range of mattresses suitable for any budget. With a huge range of open coil, pocket sprung, traditional mattresses, eco memory, latex and memory foam, we are positive we have a mattress for you. December 2013 saw the launch of Geltex, the newest invention in mattress technology. With statistics showing that around 75% of us are not getting a good nights sleep, Silentnight Group know how important sleep is to our health and wellbeing, so they introduced Geltex. Its features include: Unparalleled Breathability – many people fail to enjoy a full and deep nights sleep because of uncomfortable

overheating. Geltex has a unique open cell structure which provides unparalleled breathability – allowing air to pass through easily preventing the body from overheating. Perfect Pressure Relief – A unique fusion of gel molecules, foam crystals and air cells make Geltex extremely flexible and adaptable. These advanced flexible properties distribute body weight evenly, preventing pressure points from building by relieving pressure where you need it most – helping to reduce the discomfort of aching joints and reduce circulatory problems.

memory foam is a heat based product and can be a very warm product as it requires your body heat to be able to mould around your body to give you the support required. We have some great new offers on Geltex beds in store, the Silentnight Ultimate Geltex collection have up to £100 off the instore marked prices on divan sets and the Sealy Geltex Hybrid beds have four free drawers on all models. Don’t forget that pillows are very important too. A cheap, unsupportive pillow can cause neck and back problems. These are just as important as your new mattress.

Optimal Body Support – Innovative elasticity ensures immediate spring back for ultimate support and comfort. As no two individuals are the same, Geltex responds to the individual contours of the body – providing perfect spinal alignment and support throughout the night.

For more help and advice, visit our in store Mattress Specialists who can talk you through all the pros and cons of various mattresses. We also pride ourselves on having the most up to date mattress technology. We are on hand to advise you, not to high pressure you in to buying something that may not be suitable

Window Geeks “Replacing your steamed-up windows doesn’t mean you have to replace the whole window…Save thousands by changing only the glass”… It can be stressful when things break or go wrong, especially when it seems the only solution comes at great expense. Unexpected bills can hit households very hard at a time when every penny counts and it means that thousands of homeowners put off fixing their windows or doors for fear of the high costs usually associated with these types of products... Well now you can relax…because WindowGeeks, a national window, door and conservatory repair specialist, has expanded into Norwich and will service the whole of the Norfolk region, giving local home owners access to real money-saving options; one that can reduce what could be an alarming bill in the thousands to a far more acceptable one in the low hundreds - and in most cases even lower than that. The fact is that the average single repair or replacement undertaken by WindowGeeks, which includes locks, handles and hinges, as well as the usual replacement of steamed-up double glazed units is less

than £60...not surprising really when you consider that the replacement of a single steamed-up double glazed window starts from as low as £30 including VAT and fitting…which is why, at this point, many people take the opportunity to upgrade to energy efficient double glazed units. Our new local and experienced team, headed up by Steve Olley, join all of our other skilled craftsmen and women throughout the UK, each providing a professional and cost effective service to 1,000s of customers from Plymouth in the Southwest, through Norwich in the East, up to Preston in the North and all points in-between… “Lots of people have problems with their windows,” says Steve, “They get steamed-up and won’t clear, or the locks stick or the handles get loose…and it becomes even more of a problem at this time of year when cold draughts get through...but what’s really surprising is that most people don’t realise that all of these problems can be fixed quickly and without spending a fortune or having to

sell one or more of their children, unless they want to of course”… WindowGeeks has over 38 years’ experience in the glazing industry and it’s sad to think that there are still quite a few traditional window companies that either refuse or just don’t want to carryout repairs…now were not saying that all double glazing companies don’t carry out repairs, many do, and do a great job, but Steve adds, “In most cases they’re not really interested in the smaller jobs and that’s what’s so great about WindowGeeks, we offer a real cost-effective solution, which makes it a very easy decision for our customers to choose us...there’s no pressure sales from us because there’s no viable alternative, unless, that is, you want to spend 10, 20 or even 100 times more on replacing all your double glazing!” While the cost savings might be the biggest draw, there’s another reason customers should choose WindowGeeks and one that has inevitably convinced many customers throughout the UK to use us;

“It’s all about honesty and trust,” says Steve. “There’s integrity in what WindowGeeks do and that’s very important to me, we tell the truth, only charge for what needs doing and we always honour our promises…We run a very successful and ethical business based on good old fashioned customer service backed up with top quality products and support from our head office.” WindowGeeks provides free quotations with; • No call out charges • No credit card charges • No deposits • No minimum order values, • No high pressure sales men or women • No hidden extras • 10 year guarantee on all glazed products All our quotes include VAT and Fitting Call now for a FREE QUOTE on 0800 61 22 943 or visit us at www.windowgeeks.co.uk

Make The Most Of Your Retirement We are all living longer and planning to do more with our free time... ..But a changing economic climate and pension provisions mean many people don’t often have the money to realise their retirement dreams. Equity release is beginning to play an important role for home owners aged over 55 and in my experience the most important factors for people seeking advice is to demonstrate and be able to guarantee the following: • There must be a ‘no negative equity guarantee’ to safeguard your beneficiaries • You have the right to sell your home at any time to down-size or move into other accommodation, the amount owed is then repaid with any balance transferred to your bank account • No monthly payments are made, as interest is rolled up on a lifetime mortgage. If a Home Reversion plan is more suitable you would sell a proportion of your property and remain in your home for life with no roll up of interest on the percentage of the value retained.

• You are able to remain in your own home for as long as you wish • Money borrowed will be at a fixed rate of interest for life, is tax-free, and can be used for any purpose There are many reasons why people raise money using Equity Release: to repay an existing mortgage, home improvements, buy a motor home, travel abroad, help their children with house purchase or to enhance their own lifestyle. Before making any decisions you are advised to seek independent professional advice from a person qualified and approved by the FCA. This can be checked on the FCA Register: www.fca.org.uk/register or telephone 0800 111 6768.

you to discuss and reflect on the advice given. In my opinion you should not make any decision at the first meeting. This should be to establish whether the person giving you the advice is acceptable to you or not before asking him or her to obtain further information specific to your own needs. It is an FCA requirement that Keyfacts are given to you and thoroughly explained, this may be from two or three providers to assess the most suitable before making your decision to apply for either a lump

sum of money, income or to secure a facility that will allow you to draw down sums as and when required. There are many options available to you hence the reason why it is necessary to be fully informed. For further information please call me on 01508 483983 or visit my website: www.businessmattersifa.co.uk - My FCA number is 301141 Michael Boon Cert PFS CeMAP CeRER member of the Equity Release Council

Before deciding whether Equity Release is suitable for you, your questions should be answered to your total satisfaction, be prepared to take time over this, never be rushed into something if you are in any doubt. If you are single or living on your own, consider inviting a friend or a family member to be with you. This will enable

Valentines History

Special Events

Spring is almost upon us and, like the rest of nature, our thoughts are turning to romance.

Themed events for you and your loved one to enjoy

As bulbs begin to peep out of the ground and birdsong our gardens, there is a noticeable change in the air as St Valentine’s Day approaches. Embracing a time of year that is historically associated with love and fertility, St Valentine’s Day encompasses the marriage of Greek gods Zeus and Hera and the Ancient Roman festival of Lupercus, the god of fertility. There is some dispute over the original date of this festival but since 496 St Valentine’s Day has been celebrated on February 14 when Pope Galasius named it in memory of a third century Roman priest. While there were two other St Valentines, one a priest in Italy and another who lived and died in Africa, it is widely accepted that the Bishop of Interamna (now Terni in northern Italy) is the basis for the modern saint. Valentinius was a devout Catholic who dared to flout Roman Emperor Claudius II’s edict which banned soldiers from marrying, as he believed it weakened their military resolve and focus. Instead, all young Roman men were ordered to worship their twelve gods and every February 15 they celebrated a fertility festival where the men were allowed to choose a sexual partner from the young women gathered. But Valentinius encouraged the men to shun the heathen practice and dedicate themselves instead to Christ and the sanctity of marriage. He preached Christ at the threat of death and officiated secret weddings on February 14. He continued to conduct marriages in secret between young people, sometimes as young as twelve, and was eventually arrested. During his imprisonment, Valentinius taught Julia, the prison commander’s beautiful but blind daughter, about Roman history, arithmetic and God. Spurred on by her faith, he prayed for her and she received her sight but only in time to read his last note on the eve of his execution, urging her to devote her life to God and signed “from your Valentine”. He was killed the next day, February 14, 270 AD, and Julia and many whose lives

were touched remembered him every February 14, by sending notes and gifts to others to celebrate his life. That tradition has grown rapidly worldwide and an estimated one billion cards are now sent each year, making it the second largest card-sending holiday of the year after Christmas. However, many centuries later, St Valentine continues to be the source of fervent discussion and disagreement. Far from the passion and heat of the Italian capital, two Celtic nations are at loggerheads over who can lay claim to the saint’s holy relics. Franciscan friars in one of Glasgow’s most deprived areas insist they were asked in 1868 to look after the remains by a French family who owned other religious relics. The relics spent more than a century in a side aisle of St Francis’ Church, Glasgow, and in recent years were kept in a wooden casket in a cardboard box, on a wardrobe in a nearby chapel house. They were recently moved to the church of Blessed St John Duns Scotus in the Gorbals and were put on display for a special Valentine’s service in a bid to bring a little romance to the Scottish city. However, the Scottish ceremony did not find favour across the Irish Sea where the remains of St Valentine are said to repose in a casket at Whitefriar Street Church in Dublin. The Irish say they were passed on as a gift from Pope Gregory XVI to the respected Dublin Carmelite, Father John Spratt. Whatever the truth of the matter, it is unlikely that the confusion will not detract from the true message of the saint’s day.

Languorous breakfasts together in the conservatory? Couples-only cruises? Holding hands on long walks along the promenade? In reality, retirement can put a lot of stress on even the most secure of relationships, after years spending just a few hours together a week you’re suddenly plunged in to 24 hours a day, seven days a week with the same person. So how do you ensure your relationship survives retirement? Prepare for success Take time before you retire to evaluate your relationship and how you intend to make the most of it when you have more time together. Talk about what you imagine your life will be like and to discuss the places where your fantasies don’t match. Make a plan which both of you are happy with - where will you holiday? Will you move house? What hobbies will you enjoy together and apart? Manage your expectations Be aware that retirement won’t be perfect every step of the way. Spending all this time together will result in some disagreements so don’t expect a bed of roses, excitement every day or constant romance. Appreciate what you have in your stable relationship and the time you have together in retirement. Share your hobbies Supposing your husband loves golf, or your wife is a gardener extraordinaire. Spend time appreciating your other half’s

February 2014

passions, whether you enjoy them or not. A relationship is all about give and take and you never know, you may discover a skill for putting or a love of roses yourself. But not all of them In every relationship, from the fledgling romance to the long-standing love, couples need space from each other. Make time just for you and allow your partner to spend time apart as well. This may involve taking solo holidays, spending time with friends or taking a class. But if it just means taking a relaxing bubble bath a couple of times a week or reading a book in the study, that’s good too. Stay positive When you and your partner find yourself in each other’s company day in, day out you’ll undoubtedly come across problems. But even if hidden resentments bubble to the surface, you disagree on how to spend (or save) your nest egg or you just begin to get under each other’s feet, keep a positive outlook, remember why you looked forward to this time and enjoy it as best you can. If in doubt ask for help It might be as simple as chatting with a friend or you might choose to contact a relationship counsellor but the important thing is that you know there’s no shame in admitting there’s something not right in your marriage. Retirement can be more stressful than any of us expect but ask for help and take advice and it can be just as wonderful as you hoped.

Under A Quarter Of The UK Saving For Retirement A new Age UK poll has revealed that just under a quarter of people aged 50 – 64 think there’s no point in saving for their retirement. The poll, carried out to mark the launch of the charity’s Financial Services Commission, found that 23 % of this age group across Great Britain don’t think it’s worth saving for later life. The survey found that, far from being complacent about their financial predicament, many people did not believe that they had enough to retire comfortably. In fact 26 % of 50-64 year olds worried about having enough to live on. In addition 15% said they couldn’t afford to save and 12% said they thought they’d left it too late. Yet, virtually half, 47 %, of 50-64 year olds think the State Pension will not be enough to live on, raising the spectre of older people struggling to make ends meet later on in retirement. Only 15 % of 50-64 year olds thought they had saved enough already.

Tom Wright, Group Chief Executive of Age UK and Co-Chair of the Financial Services Commission said, ‘It’s not surprising Tomorrow’s Pensioners have become disillusioned about saving for retirement. As a group, they have weathered multiple recessions, a global financial crisis and seen, interest and annuity rates plummet leaving pension pot returns at an all-time low. Age UK’s Financial Services Commission is holding a series of summit meetings between December 2013 and June 2014 where the charity will be carrying out research, bringing together leading industry figures and consulting older people on ways to build up financial resilience. The purpose will be to enable them to prepare for later life and to ensure they can stay financially included until the end of their lives.

Motorsport Marshals Mobiles Driving Would you like to get closer to motorsport? Try out a day as a marshal! What is a marshal? A motorsport marshal carries out a wide range of duties, all of which contribute to the overall efficiency and success of a motorsport event, whether that is a race, rallying or speed (sprinting and hill-climbing) event. It is a voluntary role, and vital to the organisation of motorsport within the UK. Why become a marshal? It’s an exciting way of getting involved in motorsport. You get into events free, learn new skills, meet new people and make new friends, help others, watch the action with the best view possible, and have a great day out. Your contribution is appreciated and recognised by everyone involved, including the organising clubs and competitors. As a marshal, you join a band of enthusiasts who enjoy motorsport and, through active marshalling clubs, an interesting social life. What qualifications and training do I need? No qualifications are required, just a willingness to get involved, have fun and learn what it’s all about. To be a full marshal you have to be 16 or above, but there’s also opportunities for under 16’s to become involved as a cadet marshal.

Training is provided by motorsport clubs, marshal clubs and the Motor Sport Association (MSA). If you already have special skills, such a technical skills, mechanical, rescue, vehicle recovery, medical, first aid or administration, you may wish to use those skills in your role as a marshal.

Motorists To Distraction Mobile phones are now such a part of our lives that for most of us they’re the last thing we see at night and the first thing we look at in the morning. Our addictive relationship with the gadget has grown in proportion to the apps we rely on to direct our daily lives - not all of which are to our benefit.

What time commitment is involved? There’s no minimum requirement beyond attending appropriate training, so it’s up to you. Some people notch up 70 or more days marshalling each year, at home and abroad, others might just do the occassional weekend. Can I just work locally or do I have to travel? Again, it’s entirely up to you. Many marshals choose to work at their local race circuit or other nearby motorsport locations, whereas others are happy to travel around the country. How do I find out more and get started? There’s more information available via: www.marshals.co.uk www.volunteersinmotorsport.co.uk www.msauk.org

The dangers of using a mobile while driving are well documented and do attract a £60 fine, three penalty points and higher insurance premiums. Yet new research reveals that despite the practice being illegal since 2003, three quarters of British drivers see others using mobile phones on some or most journeys, while a quarter spot drivers using their mobile on every trip. And it’s not just talking that’s the problem - some drivers are texting, emailing, Tweeting, updating their social networks or taking photographs on the move. The AA/Populus poll of nearly 21,000 drivers found 42 per cent say they used a hand-held phone in the car even though nearly two thirds admitted it distracted them from driving. Some 20 per cent confessed to texting behind the steering wheel, four per cent admit to checking emails and two per cent have sent emails or read Twitter or Facebook updates on the move. Another worrying and morbid development is the advent of “digital rubber neckers” - drivers who feel the need to use their phones to film or photograph serious crashes on the motorway, says the motoring organisation. In one incident on the M1 in Northamptonshire, police recorded 80 drivers using their phones or cameras to photograph emergency services carry out a four and a half hour rescue of a woman trapped in her crashed truck. The seriously injured driver was eventually flown by air ambulance to hospital and survived the crash. The police have contacted most of the drivers to warn them about their illegal and irresponsible behaviour but have not brought any prosecutions. Edmund King, AA president, says: “Drivers need to concentrate on driving rather than

February 2014

be distracted by their digital technology. Research shows that some drivers are now using their smart phones for more than talking on the move. It is really not smart to talk, text or tweet on the move. “Digital rubber neckers who photograph crashes really are morbid voyeurs who should be concentrating on the road not the victims of crashes. It beggars belief that these macabre motorists should put their lives and others at risk through their lust for twisted metal. “We would like to see the police target more mobile phone abusers so that the message gets out that it is not worth hanging on the telephone while driving. However, we have seen a 29% reduction in traffic police in the last decade so their resources are stretched.” Road safety charity Brake’s campaign urging drivers to put their phones out of sight and out of mind while driving warns that using a phone behind the wheel can lengthen reaction times to a similar extent to drink driving, significantly increasing the risk of crashing. The charity says unlike other types of deadly risk-taking, men and women young and old - are almost equally guilty of using their phone behind the wheel, showing widespread misunderstanding of the dangers. Julie Townsend, Brake deputy chief executive, says: “Use a phone while driving and you are taking a horrendous risk with your own life and the lives of others. Many drivers who wouldn’t dream of drink-driving are using phones while driving, oblivious that the effect on your reaction times can be similar. “We’re urging people to drive smart, recognising that phone use at the wheel can and does destroy lives, and no call or text is ever that important. If you need to use your phone urgently, pull over somewhere safe first: it’s as simple as that. We are also calling on the government to do more to tackle phone use at the wheel, including banning hands-free phones and bringing in far stiffer penalties.”

MOTORING Review 21

Fiat 500L Trekking 1.6 MultiJet 105hp The Fiat 500L Trekking combines a fashionable look with special grip gadgetry called Traction+, which helps the car handle difficult and dicey surfaces. Under conditions of low or zero traction, the system detects slip, making it easy to maintain directional stability and control. The car is slow and cumbersome to begin with, but the technology certainly inspires confidence during bad driving conditions. The fresh model offers the same functional and practical qualities of the standard Fiat 500L, but has a more upright look. This is because the Italian automaker has raised the car’s suspension to enable it to drive over rough ground more effectively. Features on the 500L includes a touchscreen radio with Bluetooth, six airbags, ESC (Electronic Stability Control), cruise control, leather gearknob and steering wheel, dual zone climate control, side mouldings, parking sensors, electric windows, automatic lights with rain sensors, front fog lights and rear armrest. The Fiat also has high-tech fabric seat upholstery with eco-leather inserts.

were fitted with mud and snow tyres. To emphasise its outdoor disposition, the Fiat also has specific front and rear bumpers, a skid-plate and fog lights which help give it a rugged look. If you’re concerned about the wellbeing of you and your passengers then the Fiat will certainly tick your box. It’s one of the safest motors on the road today, as demonstrated by its prestigious Euro NCAP 5-star rating. In fact the 500L Trekking is the first car in the Fiat range to provide City Brake Control as standard. This system is designed to reduce the effects of low-speed collision in traffic. It’s clever stuff. Overall, the big Fiat is a robust motor and will appeal to style conscious families who need the space for five people combined with functionality and practicality. Just don’t expect awesome acceleration and certainly allow yourself lots of time to overtake.
