Who needs the Queen skydiving when you’ve got a spaceship giving birth to a giant egg, from which a sparrow mascot hatches? Danny Boyle’s London 2012 opening ceremony may have had royalty but Moscow 2013 has a man in a hat on a flying bike, tiny hurdles, the periodic table of elements via the medium of interpretive dance, ballet, street dance, suprematic art, montage cinema and FIVE space rockets.

WELCOME TO MO-SCOW The stars of track and field serve up a treat on day one of the IAAF World Championships in Moscow, 30 years since the first ever edition. With the likes of Usain Bolt and Olympic pole vault champion Renaud Lavillenie making it through their respective qualifying rounds unscathed, there are few surprises. On the track, although it first looks like the men's 10,000m is being set up by the East Africans to make it tough for Great Britain's Mo Farah, the race is won in familiar fashion: with Farah's trademark sprint finish.

H C U O THE IRON LADY 1 During qualifying in the women’s discus, Polish athlete Zaneta Glanc accidentally hits the Ukraine’s Natalia Semenova (left) in the nose while miming a throw in the athlete’s area. Despite a bout of concussion and a broken nose, Semenova still went on to throw, managing one valid effort of 55.79m. "I had to throw to show for my husband and parents, watching on TV in Donetsk, that I’m alive, feeling good, and I’m the Iron Lady as usual," says Semenova.

LIGHTNING FOR BOLT The sport of athletics and the elements combine on day two, creating a perfect storm in Moscow. As the fastest man in history reclaims his 100m world title: thunder rumbles, lightning strikes, and AFP photographer Olivier Morin captures the shot of the century. "If I tried again for a similar result for the next 50 years, it wouldn't happen again," says Morin. "I only really give myself credit for one percent of this picture."
