Pencil Brief This brief was undoubtedly my least favourite and probably the only brief I didn’t enjoy, I normally find when I have confined briefs I enjoy finding new ways to look at things, it can be challenging but through that process it can mean finding inspiration in unusual places, however this one left me stumped, I came up with a few ideas but nothing I really liked hence the absence of this brief in my portfolio.

bad idea number 1

I liked this aesthetically but it wasn’t anything ceative, it’s ideas like this that frustrate me for lack of imagination. bad idea number 2

Five Words Brief

>>>>>>>>

This brief was nother challenging one as I was still getting into the swing of things, the practical stuff in the lessons was actually great fun, speed drawing etc witch is a technique that leter helped me when doing the time and motion brief. Although I was not that happy with my end results, mainly due to them not looking like what I had already imagined in my head something I realise can be good as well as bad, through the process of experimenting I did come up with a new technique which has furthered my knowledge in photoshop, so the over all outcome was definitely positive.

ELVIS LOOKS GREAT!!!!! BUT THE TEXT LOOKS BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD

Research, Morning breath studio, really like the way they layer images over old posters and wood, don’t seem to be able to achieve the same effect in a photoshop mockup but painting directly onto wood I think would work

Paper bRIEF

Yulia Brodskaya >>>

The paper brief was a brief that I would have liked to have taken further but than I did as I had so many ideas, however time constraints meant I had to push on The initial workshops were frustrating as I had done the excercises before and felt that I wanted to get on with my own ideas at home, Paper has such malleable qualities that the possibilities are endless despite it’s appearance ie Robert The,Yulia Brodsaya, Juliene Harris and Olafur Ellason I . I enjoyed the process of making typefaces so I decided to make my own. Semiinspired by the works of people like Robert The and Olafur Ellason I wanted to create a typeface made of type. Rather than going with my normal approach which would have been photoshop manipulation I decided to walk the slow and lengthy path of hand drawn, so I bought an old book from a charity store and set to work.

Time and Motion/Challenge a Sketchbook Brief For the Challenge of the sketchbook part of this brief I decided to just put my work on the Blog, I have never felt comfortable using sketchbooks as semiscrap books the that has been expected of me in the past, I have a real issue with the wasting of paper and If I am going to improve on that paper by drawing on it, thus creating something new then I am at ease with it, but I cannot get my head around gluing stuff I want to keep there, I would rather scan it and keep it on a blog where I know where to find it (sketchbooks can be mislaid!!) Therefore I challenge the sketchbook by denying it in it’s traditianal form and applying my blog as the electronic sketchbook of my choice.

Tried to print a background with lino-cut cog shapes, but it didn’t print well.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

this was an experiment using the speed drawing technique, I sat for exactly one hour (TIME) and drew every person that walked past (MOTION) and this was the result, I was really happy as I struggle to enjoy drawing at speed.

The idea behind this one was to have an illustration that showed the young and old, the newborn represents the young obviously and the background is an old postcard written in the fifties by my auntie on holiday. I decided to abandon this idea as I couldn’t get a solid concept that transalted well on an image level. Looking back on it now though I think the sketch looks better as it is so maybe a more minimalist approach would work.

>>>>>><<<<<<<

Christiana MONOleg This is an idea I had originally about clocks, Clocks being to closest link between time and motion, obviously clocks tell the time but they have a relationship with motion as they need the constantly moving cogs to keep going, I thought this connection was interesting. The story was because I had originally intended to draw a girl with her hair caught in the cogs but someone pointed out that I had drawn a girl with one leg, so I then ended up doing some text telling a short story in the vein of Tim Burtons “melancholy death of oyster boy

I think the cogs look better in Black and White, it gives it a more industrial feel, Like the Kino Eye posters, I thought of the poster as sort of a dark adult image and text based book.

Trying to do a bit of a David Hockney with this one, only I wanted to elaborate by taking pictures in different seasons and take the picure to a more panorammic size making more of a representation of time, I tried to take pictures capturing the vehicles blur, but struggled to get a decent pick because of the delay on my digital camera, in the end after daaaaaaays of trying I got a good one of a truck, I managed to get varying pics over sunny days, overcast days, snowy days and autumnal days, quite please with the ongoing results.

Tried to layer photo’s of passing cars to create an abstract image with the feeling of motion, like the photographer Doug Keys, I forgot to save the various stages which was dissappointing because half way through it started to look really interesting and then I carried on and it now doesn’t look as good. Booooooo.

I took some paint and mixed it with water and froze it in order to scan it in the bottom of a glass bowl at ten minute intervals as it melted, the first attempt falied as it was not enough frames ( I was planning to animate it). This however turned out to be a blessing as I wanted to make the text of the word TIME out of the ice cubes. So I decided to try again this time though I scanned at one minute intervals but slowed the intervals down over time as the last attempt I noticed the ice melted slower toward the end of the process, or at least it seemed to. I ended up with 120 frames in total. I spent two days making the animation in photoshop only to find that I could not save it or convert it into a working image, so after hours of trying I eventually had to abandon the idea, but I still have the frames so I decided to make a graphic out of them anyway.

Old Vs New I enjoyed this brief a lot as the research was relevant to something i am already passionate about,so this gave me an excuse to delve into things I wasalready interested in and hear opinions of people that I respect. I did however find the brief challenging in places due to how the brief was worded, certain aspects of what were expected where not as obvious to me as some others which created issue’s. Still not certain wether I’ve met the full brief requirements or not but I gave it my best shot as far as the actual design work goes, although my presentation was lackluster. We all have our off days

I came across this composer, he manipulates old record players and creates ambient sound scapes, I think this is a good example of how old can become new and proves the point that just because something is out dated does not mean it is obsolete, it simply means it is without use, but this leaves the object open to find a new use.

Couldn’t find out hwo did this image as I stumbled across it and it wasn’t credited, spent hours looking to no avail. found it really inspiring the use of layering a figure into an object, great effect and really subtle.

Originally intended as big promo boards to go all over london promoting the retro appeal of vinyl in comparison to the incoming wave of over digitized media, not sure how clear the message comes through, I think it needs some text but I became stumped over what would be appropriate.

not massivley into the way this one all fits together and I hate the way the text looks, it reminds me of bad nineties rap albums, but there is something about it that has potential I would like to try it in a few different colors and with the pictures spaced differently and on a larger scale.

like the above poster, it would be meant as an online promotional banner to go on the apple page to promote the new look i-tunes.

Interatcion Brief Our idea was to see wether people would interact on their own accord, whilst some interacted on a basic level which was to read (which most people seemed unable to walk past without reading, most people did not follow either of the instructions on the sheet. We suspect that because the “don’t tread on me” was on the left, that was the instruction they chose to follow as we read from left to right. Also we noticed that children and Older people where more inclined to interact, this shows that young children and the elderly have less inhibitions.

the vinyl format has become emblematic of a certain muso-fascism, wouldn’t you agree? I don’t know, maybe it’s with good reason - sure, much music does sound great through the crackle and bass of a record player. A big tangible product, too, is a big attraction. But at the same time, it has almost become the calling card of that weird elitism - you know man, you’ve probably encountered it yourself enough times - the sneering bastards who live their lives on the peripheries of Pitchfork. This is the person to whom owning first pressing of “Tiger-milk” or some shit on vinyl is some of achievement that qualifies their ceaseless spouting of opinion and grimacing at kids in record shops. I think that maybe a lot of people, especially young, don’t want to be a part of the snobbery of “going vinyl”... or maybe this is all just something I’ve cooked up in my head. Who knows! For the “record” (ho ho ho) I’m like Ken by the sounds of things, a bit of a pragmatist. Though I own a fair amount of vinyl, I tend to buy CDs and I like the ease of iPods and mp3 players

I love the way records look, and love building a physical collection that will stay with me for the rest of my life (hopefully). The canvas size for artwork with an LP lends itself to being viewed more as a piece of art, so I personally appreciate artwork for vinyl releases way more. I also like the way that you have to engage with a record, from taking it out the sleeve, to turning it over when the side is done, even to putting it away. I never gave a shit about CDs, and still don’t. That’s why I got rid of mine. I like having the vinyl version of albums I love, I use mp3s to check stuff out, if I like it I’ll buy the record.

I prefer record sleeves to ipod pics...but I’m pretty much resigned to my iPod.

From a dj point of view I prefer records as CD decks are not tactile. For sound quality and convenience (everything is mastered digitally now anyway) digital media is my preference

i pretty much exclusively buy vinyl and don’t pay for downloads. i prefer vinyl because its tangible, there’s a physical act in actually puttin on a record, turnin it over for side two and

comes in a much larger format with nice big artwork. also vinyl is collectable. who wants to download a shitty jpg as artwork!? you cant keep that on yr record shelf

I am more of the vinyl persuasion. I think it’s a more aesthetically pleasing format and can often have a different warmth about the sound of some records. It’s also a better size to appreciate the artwork and if any care and consideration has gone into the design aspect at all it can feel more than just an album that you have. I’m a fan of the different editions and pressings that can come out too and keep that interesting. I know you can do that with CD’s too but, for me, I find it much more pleasing to own the vinyl and have a collection that is more of an archive I can always refer to and enjoy that physical interaction of filing them away and going through them. The only time I don’t enjoy the physical interaction is when I move house. :)

I only like music that is printed on toast

I like the sound that a record player makes when the stylus moves over and amplifies the cracks and warps in the vinyl. If the record is real old it makes me think of the time when it was made and who might have owned it before me and how old and dead they might be now : )

Logo Brief I found this brief the hardest as I have no experience in Illustrator and this has proven to be a steep learning curve, which is great because I really want to get to grips with it, but it is incredibly stressfull to meet deadlines whilst still battling to understand how the package works. This is the side of graphic design that I know the least about so I am eager to get stuck in and have found it very rewarding if at times frustrating, I am not 100% pleased with my results but I’m comfortable with that at this stage. The images I had in my head for my logo I found impossible to achieve with my limited knowledge and time constraints meant it was impossible to learn the techniques I needed to achieve the look I was after. Hay HO!

After the crit Ally said that the logo reminded her of architecture so i thought I would make the logo for a theoretical architects, i chose the Pantone 451 to be a kind of neutral wood color to give that feel of being a structure.

Personal Developement

This is the poster that my group help make, the text on the first row was put in backward but I really like the irregularity of it, carving the letters was fiddly but weirdly satisfying and I think the end result looks great as a piece of text especially as it is all at the top, I also love the extra bits of ink that printed it gives it a human feel and makes it look old and rustic for want of a better word.

Whilst studying movalbe type and the printing press I decided to use the lino-cut technique we learnt to make some lino print posters as a homage to the typeface Helvetica, After watching the ‘helvetica’ documentary I noticed that not all the opinions were positive and that some deemed the typeface over-used, with this in mind I decided to make the poster a play on words from the Horror film ‘Hellraiser’ implying the prospect of a dystopia where this was the only typeface, also inspired by some of the dystopian themes covered in our C.S lectures.

While I laboured for hours carving my Hellraiser shaped passage through the soft Lino I had purchsed earlier that day, I noticed that when veiwed close up It resembled the contours of a map so when photographed closed up it can be seen as 3D contour map, I thought this made a beautiful photograph which had the potential for many differing avenues which I later inted to persue, two of the initial ideas where a carver then photographed logo for a surveying company or just as a fine art piece an accurate representation of map on a lagre scale.

I did this as an excercise to get used to certain aspects of Illustrator that I find difficult, Some of my favourite influences like Dan Mumford and Daniel Danger use a lot of line work and I wanted to attempt to bring this into Illustrator to clean up the lines and color the image. I also have really enjoyed looking at the work by Malevici in C.S but I find it hard to be satisfied by producing minimalist work myself so I wanted to combine the two, the face and protruding body parts being the floating shapes. The image itself could potentially be used for an advertising campaign for bubble bath or bathing based products, much like some of the designs shown in CS promoting education and books, lthough the dissemination factor for todays society is more geared toward consumerism as opposed to the education based posters of Malevici.

I was approached by a band to design a cover for their upcoming e.p (previous double page spread) and a subsiquent tour poster (right), The brief I was given was same as the theme of the e.p the deconstruction of society and the figureheads of government. The idea behind the cover was to show a cityscape in ruins and a ‘suit’ shamelessly presenting us the blackened heart of the city, I had a huge amount fun creating the cityscape using many methods I had not used before i.e stenciling, spray paint, all onto an A1 size piece of cardboard to give it a kind of junky/litter feel, for this I also glued pages from books and old photographs. I had problems getting a decent image of the A1 piece in order to then manipulate the heart and the suit onto, as it was too large to scan plus for photographing, in order to get close enough to capture the detail I could not get the whole thing in frame, so in the end I had to sacrifice some of the detail, I even tried taking a few photo’s and putting them together in photoshop but because the board

warped this became impossible. The tour poster is again supposed to have a city dump look to it, purely based on a whim I had an illustration of a monster that I wasn’t keen on so I layered and rotated lots of duplicates of this image onto each other which created a look better than I had expected, as much as I loathe the term it was a ‘happy accident’. Again both these peices can be attributed to some of the eight drivers, certainly political because of the nature of the statements on the government, social because of the target audience, there does seem to be a theme running through underground music culture that has a DIY punk rock ethic where alot of the bands playing the music also create their own art, a lot of it using familiar imagery i.e birds, hearts, skulls etc. I supposed for the

>>>>>>>>

>>>>>>>>

same reasons economical as well because a lot of the bands involved in the DIY culture are doing so because of an inability to get funding from record labels.

The crying boy is a t-shirt design I did for my own band Tropics, to be honest the brief was more of a task as after an in joke we all thought it would be a great image to have a boy crying because he’d wet himself but the urine patch spelt the band name, The typography if you can call a patch of urine typography was basically free hand to acheive the randomness of spreading liquid. I am really inspired by the artists in the beautiful losers film shown especially the colors they use like Margaret Killgallen as well as being inspired by Graph artists like Mars-1, so I wanted to play around with bright pastel based colors and get a graph feel to the piece. I am yet to get this screen printed.

D and AD Illustration brief

This shows the progression in my design Idea for the d and ad illustration brief, the brief was to pick a band and choose a song and represent that song in an unconventional way, I decided to base my illustration on the song ‘we are water’ by health with the idea that in the future you will be able to buy headphones that project images based on how you interpret a song, with ‘we are water’ the song has a galloping rythm and has a water theme running through it so I decided to have water spilling out of the headphones and a horse splashing around in the water.
