B.C. Wine Country T h e I n s i d e Tra ck
Road 13 Vineyards, Chris Mason Stearns

In early 2013, a report called Canada’s Wine Economy - Ripe, Robust, Remarkable touted that the nation’s wine industry is a $6.8 billion enterprise. It was the biggest study ever commissioned on the subject and what it discovered is that wine is an enormous economic driver, responsible for 31,370 full-time jobs. It also found that wine is a huge attraction for travellers. About three million people take advantage of wine-related tourism every year. The 800,000 people who visit B.C. wine country alone annually is more than the province drew for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Now that’s nothing to sniff at. It’s a bit of a Cinderella story, because no one but a handful of visionaries saw any real potential for winemaking in B.C. That’s shocking really, considering that the conditions here are ideal for growing grapes. The province is home to an abundance of microclimates and soils that nurture grapes. As an added bonus, there are few issues with pests and diseases that seem to plague many other regions.

Mother Nature can be a tricky customer. In 2010 and 2011, she pushed vintners to their limits by delivering weather challenges they had not seen for decades. But the 2012 growing season was about as ideal as it gets and after a reasonably mild winter, the 2013 season is getting a positive boost. B.C. wines are impressing consumers and critics where it counts the most – in the glass. The hardware from international competitions is piling up and it’s rare when wines from the province get shutout. Local wines have captured the imagination of Hollywood stars and royalty.
Q+A What do critics mean when they say a wine has a “barnyard” smell? The barnyard analogy is often used when wines have been affected by brettanomyces (“Breh-TAN-oh-MY-sees”) or “brett” for short. Brett is a wild yeast that can find its way into wine barrels, where it grows and can be virtually impossible to get rid of. Brett gives wine earthy organic aromas and flavors that can range from leathery to mousey, or “barnyard” aromas like chicken manure or horse sweat. While these characteristics don’t sound appealing, many consumers have acquired a taste for them and thus they continue to appear in red wines. Brett is controversial because it is wild and difficult to control, plus easily spread to other cellars. Under VQA regulations in B.C. it is considered a flaw.

When and how should you decant wine? There are several reasons to do this: 1. To separate wine from sediment, which is often found in aged reds; 2. To “aerate” a harsh, tannic or immature wine - allowing the oxygen to open it up and soften the harder, astringent characteristics; 3. For aesthetic appeal - many people find a decanter more attractive than a bottle. If the latter two apply, you can simply dump your wine into the decanter to achieve the desired result. The act of vigorous pouring will help the oxygen circulate through the wine. But if sediment is an issue, you need to let it all to settle into the bottom of the bottle and then pour the wine out slowly and gently, taking care not to shake the bottle. A light or candle below the bottle as you pour will allow you to see through the wine so you can stop before the sediment reaches the neck. If you want to squeeze every last drop out of your investment, pour the remaining wine through a paper coffee filter into a separate glass.
How long can you keep an open bottle of wine? The quick answer is: as long as it tastes good. Sure, you’ll loose some freshness and quality in a short time, but if you still enjoy what the wine has to offer, go ahead and fill your glass. There are all kinds of preservation methods and gadgets, but short of a fancy and expensive dispensing system, they’ll have minimal effect. Air is the culprit, and once you open that wine and pour some in your glass, you’ve let the enemy in. Drink it as soon as humanly possible. Tip: Put open wines in the refrigerator even the reds - it will slow down oxidation. How many servings can you expect per bottle? Depends on the size of your glass and the size of your pours. People are often surprised that a bottle is empty after just three or four glasses. But some stemware is big enough to hold a third of a bottle without appearing overfilled. As a rule, however, you can get five generous (Read: 5-ounce) pours out of a 750 ml bottle. If you are serving several wines for tasting, pour less than half what you would normally pour in a standard glass -
you should get about a dozen of those. You might be able to stretch a bottle to get 20 pours if you are being really frugal. What is “minerality” when used to describe wine? “Mineral” or “minerality,” can mean a wine has a metallic tang component to it and/or has some wet stone or chalky aromas and flavours. Wines in which you can find these characteristics include Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillion. They often possess quite lemony characteristics as well, which really enhances the tang. Why do some wineries choose not to filter some of their wines? Filtering is used to rid a wine of all particles so that it is clean, clear and free of haze. But some wine makers believe that filtering can strip a wine of subtle characteristics and thus the least amount of handling is preferred. Higher-end reds, in particular, are frequently bottled unfiltered. You’ll usually end up with a pretty clear wine, but may notice a small amount of sediment in the bottom, even in a young wine. It’s harmless.

Celebrating 10 years A De c a de o f W i ne Summerhill Pyramid Winery
by Julianna Hayes
The Official Wine Tour Handbook to British Columbia is marking 10 years with this edition and a decade has made a world of difference. In that abbreviated timeframe, the advancement in the industry has been nothing short of sensational. The numbers don’t lie: Grape wineries licensed Grape Acreage in British Columbia: in British Columbia: 2003 – 87 2013 – 214
2003 - 5,000 2013- 10,000
But it’s not just the statistics that speak volumes. Over the past 10 years, wine enthusiasts have sat up and taken notice of B.C. wines. And there has been significant progress and development in the making, packaging, marketing and distribution of the wines. In the world of wine, a decade is barely a drop in the bucket. Indeed, the global industry has thrived for millenniums, with grape cultivation and wine consumption dating back to 4000 BC. The major wine regions in Europe were already well established by the end of the 1700s and some estates there today are steeped in centuries old tradition. But British Columbia wine country is a toddler by comparison. While wine grapes have been growing here since the 1800s, it has only been in the last 25 years that wine production has been taken seriously in this province. Before that, not much stock was put into the potential here. In fact, back in 1986, a wine writer named Albert Givton reviewed 11 Canadian red wines for his newsletter, The Wine Consumer, and did not have any kind words to say. 8
British Columbia Wine Tour Handbook
“We do not have the micro-climates to produce decent red table wines,” he wrote. “Our governing bodies should either allow the wineries to produce red table wines from imported grapes (North Western U.S. and California) or get the grape growers to plant apple and peach trees where red grape vines are planted now.” Thank goodness no one heeded his advice. It all began to change for the better 25 years ago when Free Trade was introduced in 1988. B.C. wineries at the time were faced with an influx of better-quality imports and were forced to make dramatic improvements in order to compete. Grape growers were offered aid from the federal and provincial governments to pull out less desirable hybrid varieties and replant the preferred vinifera grapes. Two-thirds of B.C.’s vineyard acreage disappeared in that time frame – from 3,400 acres to about 1,000. Two years later, the Vintner’s Quality Alliance was introduced to further elevate the quality of B.C. wines and set a standard for consumers. At a press conference announcing the program, a reporter asked one of B.C. wine’s pioneers Harry McWatters to predict when the industry look like in 15 years. At the time there were 14 wineries in the province. McWatters boldly forecasted that the number might reach as much as 50. By 2000 there were 60. Today British Columbia wineries total 214 and counting.
Ten Years in review I n 2007, in sharp contrast to the words of Givton 20 years earlier, renowned UK critic Jancis Robinson travelled to the province and sampled a selection of British Columbia wines, describing several of them as “world class wines from any point of view.”
Ten years ago a “blend” made in B.C. was viewed as a wine made from leftovers – only single varietal bottles were considered good quality. A blend today is often the winery’s best product – as more and more look to creating signature wines.

erlot and Pinot Gris may reign supreme in the vineyards as the most planted M grapes in B.C., but there is real varietal diversification going on with prized grapes from other regions finding their way into the province. Shiraz/Syrah are perhaps the most popular newcomers, but also marking a new frontier are highly sought after Viognier, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Sangiovese, Carmenere and Zinfandel. A decade ago, bottle labels and packages mostly fell into one of two categories. 1. Reminiscent of Old World Style – made to look like a French, Italian or German design. 2. Landscape Focused – bottles adorned with artists’ rendering of Okanagan vistas. Wineries didn’t spend a lot of money in this department – some even made labels on their own computers and applied them with glue stick. The focus has shifted dramatically, as wineries have come to realize the tremendous importance of the impulse buy. If they haven’t had the opportunity to taste a particular wine, the majority of consumers make a choice in purchasing a bottle based solely on the label. Thus some funky packages have hit the shelves aimed at drawing in the consumer with their visual presence. This has also extended to winery names, now being chosen for their consumer appeal. Cases in point are Blasted Church, Dirty Laundry, Laughing Stock, Therapy and Moon Curser, just to name a few. F irestorm 2003 was front page news globally and television screens carried stunning images of forest fire flames roaring through tree tops, cutting a dark swath across the landscape, swallowing up homes and heritage parkland in its wake. Some of the reports were based on shocking misinformation – the Okanagan did not burn up - quite the opposite. A couple hundred houses were lost and some of the hillside in south-east of Kelowna was blackened by ash, but all but a couple wineries and vineyards were untouched. If anything, the wild fire of 2003 and a subsequent one in 2009 helped to bond the community. Visitors to the area will discover a unique kinship brimming with goodwill and hospitality. anadian reds may not have impressed Givton 20 years ago, but vintners today are C getting the last laugh. For example, in 2006, the trophy for the best Shiraz worldwide at the Internation Wine and Spirits Competition did not go to an Australian maker, but rather to one from British Columbia – the 2004 Jackson Triggs Proprietor’s Grand Reserve Shiraz. This was a first in this competition and a whopper of a coup. The category was first introduced in the competition in 1994 and since then Australia has come out on top 10 times, being edged out only twice before. The news was big enough to merit mention in numerous UK spirits publications, which

couldn’t help pointing out the irony of Australia being recognized as the dominate wine producing country in the competition with 23 gold “best in class” medals, yet coming up short in the one category where it should have reigned. The contenders in this competition were no lightweights. The $25 Jackson-Triggs was up against the likes of such wines as D’Arenberg Dead Arm Shiraz ($70), Wolf Blass Platinum Label Shiraz ($80) and the Eileen Hardy Shiraz ($93). La Frenz Winery’s 2005 Merlot made history by taking the best in show prize at the Northwest’s largest wine competition. While the whites and dessert wines have enjoyed success at the Northwest Wine Summit over the years, B.C. hasn’t been known for red contenders and thus it was big news when this Merlot took the top spot over all the entries from Washington and Oregon. The competition, held annually on Oregon’s Mount Hood, judged about 1,100 wines from the Pacific Northwest. I n 2005, the Vintners Quality Alliance regulations changed to permit VQA-approved wines to be sealed with alternative closures, such as crown caps and screwcaps, in addition to corks. Once synonymous with inferior wines, the screwcap now is the preferred closure for a large percentage of British Columbia wines. Corks had been the subject of debate and a serious source of frustration for many vintners as they are often responsible for spoiling the very thing they were created to protect. Corks can contain a chemical compound know as tri-chloroanisole (TCA), which develops from moulds that grow on them after they’ve has been harvested from the tree. When combined with the chlorine used to sanitize corks prior to bottling, these moulds will taint any wine they touch, resulting in aromas as unpleasant as a pair of dirty socks. TCA isn’t the only problem with corks. They can also dry out, crack and fall apart even after only a short period of time in the bottle.

Day Tripping Let’s Hit the Road Summerhill Pyramid Winery
by Julianna Hayes
What is your take on the ideal getaway? Is it wine soaked or sun soaked? Is it spent swinging on the links or basking on the beach? Is it all about cruising on the water or swooshing down the slopes? Is it about biting into a fresh picked apple or savouring an impeccably prepared meal? How about if you could have all of the above and more? Would that fit the bill? Well, British Columbia Wine Country aims to deliver. It’s one of the places on earth where you can ski, golf and tour a winery all on the same day. With this in mind, planning day trips filled with wine-focused activities combined with alternate adventures is a cinche, and you’ll be able to please just about everyone in your travel party. The biggest problem will be trying to pack in everything you want to do. Looking for ideas? How about a weekend road trip through the North, Central or South Okanagan? Spend a day on one of the area’s gorgeous golf courses. Dedicate another to touring the wineries along its scenic corridors. Cap an evening with an outdoor concert in a vineyard. Don’t forget to pick up some wine along your travels and bring it with you to any of the fine local restaurants where you can sip the spoils of your tour while sampling regional cuisine. Or how about a salmon fishing excursion combined with a tour of Vancouver Islands charming wineries? Imagine pairing a bottle of local wine with your catch of the day. While on your mini-excursion, squeeze in some shopping, take a trip to a spa or enjoy a scenic guided tour.

The Regions The Okanagan Valley The Okanagan Valley is B.C.’s largest and oldest wine appellation and has experienced unprecedented growth over the last two decades. The Okanagan is an ecological wonder. It stretches more than 100 kilometres and is arid, receiving less than 30 mm of precipitation annually. Okanagan Lake fills most of the valley floor and offers welcome respite from the blistering summer heat. An additional attraction is the vast array of wildlife species, including big horn sheep, cougars, burrowing owls and even rattlesnakes. The Okanagan is home to Canada’s only desert, an extension of the Sonoran, which stretches up from Mexico.
Thompson Vancouver, Okanagan Coast & Mountains, Fraser Valley
This divergent terrain has created unique microclimates in the various pockets of the valley. For that reason, you will find a profound diversity in the varieties of grapes and styles of wines produced here. North Okanagan • Vernon – the oldest and second largest city in the valley. Home to Predator Ridge Golf Resort, host to the prestigious Skins Game twice in eight years. • Armstrong – the cheese capital of Canada. Central Okanagan • Kelowna/West Kelowna – includes the valley’s largest city; featuring miles of sandy beaches hugging the shores of Okanagan Lake. You’ll find Big White ski resort nearby. This is where grape growing got its start in the 1800s. Numerous wineries located here forming Kelowna’s Wine Trail. Find the Lakeshore Wine Route in south Kelowna area. • O liver – Known as the Wine Capital of Canada, as it has the highest concentration of wineries and vineyard anywhere in the nation. The area features two premium growing areas – the Golden Mile and Black Sage Bench, with just about every square inch filled with lush rolling vineyards. Where there are no vines, you’ll find an abundance of fruit trees and you’ll be hard pressed during the summer months not to find something fresh and delicious to snack on. Oliver features a small, picturesque lake - Tuc El Nuit – serves as a welcome summertime respite for boating, paddling, fishing or just for cooling of. During the off-season, nearby Mt. Baldy ski resort is a quick winter getaway. • Osoyoos – The most southerly vineyards in the province surround this foot of this vibrant community, which sits just before the U.S. You’ll find an interpretative desert centre here, where you can learn about indigenous plants and animals - perhaps catching a peak at a burrowing owl or rattlesnake. Osoyoos boasts the warmest freshwater lake in Canada, extending watersports and activities. The Shuswap The Shuswap region located north of the Okanagan Valley. It is home to one of the province’s most beautiful lakes and unsurpassed mountain vistas. But it also enjoys a microclimate that has been beneficial to producing fresh, aromatic wines. Quaint communities and unparalleled hospitality make the region a must visit. The Shuswap Group of Wineries is made up of 6 wineries to plan a tour around. • Salmon Arm – Located on Shuswap Lake featuring more than 400 km of gorgeous shoreline and is considered a world-class mecca for houseboating.

Similkameen Valley History buffs will be drawn to the old frontier-like atmosphere and landscape of the Similkameen Valley, which stretches along Highway 3 to the historic town of Princeton. Back in the day, this region was known for ranching and gold mining and still retains a lot of that Western charm. Visitors on the Similkameen wine trail have been lured to the Similkameen river to try their luck at a little gold panning and prospecting. The Similkameen is one of the few regions that has yet to be tapped for its full potential for wine production. • K eremeos – This arid, pastoral valley is home to a thriving tree fruit industry, in fact, Keremeos one of the main towns on the wine route, is dubbed the Fruit stand Capital of Canada. • Cawston – an agricultural centre with two fruit packing plants, one for organic produce - a fast-growing segment of the area’s economy.

Fraser Valley Growing conditions are similar in B.C.’s fourth primary wine producing region, the Fraser Valley, which has a collection of wineries in an area rich in agricultural roots. Its proximity to Vancouver makes it highly accessible and provides excellent opportunities for rural daytrips and urban excursions. Fraser Valley producers focus mainly on growing whites and lighter reds, along with picking up fruit from the Okanagan.

Vancouver Island and Gulf Islands Vancouver and the Gulf Islands wine region is far more humid, but is also blessed with microclimates that favour winegrowing. The Cowichan Valley, for example, enjoys rather dry summer months with just over 100 cm of rainfall annually. Vancouver and the Gulf Islands have a longer growing season, a lower risk of frost in the spring and fall and little or no snow in the winter. These areas are more suitable for growing aromatic whites and lighter-style reds. But fine wines are also being made from tree fruits, berries and even honey. Many island producers purchase grapes from the Okanagan to make fuller-bodied wines. This charming region harkens back to a simpler time, with an easy, casual approach to life. Agritourism is very strong with roadside and farm-gate produce at the ready. The Kootenays Travelling east of the Okanagan Valley on Crowsnest Highway, you’ll wind your way through a vast and breathtaking terrain. The Kootenays feature an abundance of lakes and four parallel mountain ranges, beginning with the Monashees from the west. This is a region appreciated for its ruggedness, for its hot springs, for its glacial waters and for its pristine and formidable wilderness parks. But you’ll find wine here too, namely in south central communities between Trail and Creston. You could potentially visit all five wineries in one day, but are better to split it up and take in other regional sights - stopping in Trail and Thrums on day one and going to Creston and Wynndel on day two.
Travelling with Wine If you’re visiting B.C. from another province and want to bring wine home with you, there’s good news. The federal government has revoked an archaic law forbidding consumers from bringing alcohol across interprovincial borders. The law never had much teeth to it, but the potential alone was somewhat of a deterrent. Where it did have an impact was when consumers in Alberta, Ontario, Manitoba, etcetera, wanted to order wine from B.C. and have it shipped to them. A crackdown on the law a few years back halted all such shipments, virtually drying up the well of B.C. wine for anyone living outside the province unless they personally travelled here. That’s all changed. Now enthusiasts across the country can bring home B.C. wine and order it as well. if you’re an international visitor, you’ll want to check with your own country’s customs department to determine what you can bring back. For example, American travellers can bring back up to one litre of wine duty free. Additional quantities are permitted, although they will be subject to duty and Federal excise taxes, which will be assessed and collected at the port of entry. There’s no limit on the amount you can bring back as long as it’s for personal use, but large quantities might raise a red flag. You should be safe with about a case.

Wine + Golf Red, White and Green Sunset Ranch Golf & Country Club

It should come as no surprise that a region with a climate that nurtures grape vines would also be a mecca for golf courses. In fact, British Columbia is home to more than 300 courses ranging from simple par threes to world-class facilities which are a challenge for even scratch golfers. But don’t take just our word for it. In 2007, the International Association of Golf Tour Operators named British Columbia the Best Golf Destination in North America. In 2010, SCOREGolf named the top five new courses in the country and three are in B.C. Some of the world’s top golf architects have lent their expertise to designing courses in the province, including Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Les Furber. And you can’t beat B.C.’s natural beauty – teeing off with a backdrop of mountains, lakes, ocean or desert landscapes is simply unsurpassed. A growing trend for golf enthusiasts who visit British Columbia are vacations that combine their love for the links with their love for wine. Tour operators have recognized this and have begun developing package options that reflect this dual interest. Individual golf courses are also promoting British Columbia wine by offering winery tours direct from their facilities. Depending on the location and your personal desires, you have a number of choices when it comes to planning your golf and wine tour. You may want to dedicate certain days to golf and others to wine separately to make the most of each activity. But the proximity of many of the region’s golf courses to the wineries, particularly in the Okanagan-Similkameen, means you can spend a few hours on the links then roll out on a wine tour on the same day with ease. So if your time in B.C. is limited there is no reason you can’t enjoy golf and wine to the max. PAGE 43 PHOTO CREDITS

If drinking and driving is a concern, tour operators will shuttle you around and many give you the option to build your own packages to tailor to your interests instead of following a set itinerary. Planning a golf and wine tour is especially versatile when members of your party aren’t necessarily interested in both activities. Non-golfers can fill their days full of wine and scenic tours, while the enthusiast can spend time on the links guilt free and vice versa. With so many options to choose from for your wine and golf vacation, it pays to do a little planning. Here are a few tips: • Select your destination in British Columbia and research the wineries in the area; • When you decide which wineries are a must visit during your trip, research which golf courses are located reasonably close by; • If you prefer using a designated driver, inquire about tour operators in the area and ask about possible wine and golf packages; • When booking your accommodation, inquire if the hotel/motel or resort provides a shuttle service to nearby wineries and/or golf courses. Most will offer wine and golf packages; • Inquire about winery tours from the golf courses when you call to book tee times; • If you plan a wine and golf tour on the same day, consider bringing a change of clothes, as you may not necessarily want to wear your golf attire to visit wineries; • Make sure you stay well-hydrated. When playing the following courses, consider these suggested wineries in your itinerary. Predator Ridge Resort: Vernon / www.predatorridge.com

attractions Off the Wine Trail
Kettle Valley Steam Railway
by Julianna Hayes
While visiting B.C. Wine Country you may wish to step off the wine trail and take in other sights, scenes and activities. British Columbia will deliver with tons of attractions for adults who want an escape or families seeking a thrill. Consider a visit to a day spa, hot springs or botanical gardens. Take a train ride on the Kettle Valley Steam Railway, a trip down a zip line, or a float plane tour. Attend a festival, visit a local agricultural fair or amusement park. B.C. is an ecological wonder with a desert interpretative centre, old growth forests and marine-life migration points. It’s a golf and ski nirvana, offers world-class fishing, snowmobiling and boating opportunities and is home to some of the most beautiful beaches anywhere. It’s steeped in culture, which is part of the reason why the wine industry has thrived here. Depending on the location or the season, vinous exploits in British Columbia can combine a concert under the stars, a visit to a bee-keeping facility, a tour of an art exhibition, a Shakespearean production in a park, or a festival that provides all of the above and more. There are ballet companies, theatre groups, galleries and museums. You find symphonies, chamber orchestras, jazz clubs and French cultural centres. The streets are home to public art. The parks are filled with buskers and craftspeople. And many wineries, which once offered only wine to those who appeared on their doorsteps, now have added cultural components to their venues. Several have constructed outdoor

amphitheatres, which provide concert series or theatre productions during the summer months. Some have onsite art galleries featuring local artisans. Others offer cooking classes and educational wine seminars. There are thriving multicultural organizations, which embrace the province’s undeniable First Nations heritage or embrace the traditions of the region’s newcomers. There are countless festivals dedicated to music, theatre, art and wine, and ones that combine them all.
B.C. Wine Festivals Most wine enthusiasts will jump on the chance to learn more about their favourite beverage and there is no better opportunity to do so than at a wine festival. There are numerous such events held throughout B.C.’s wine regions, so you may want to time your visit accordingly. Cornucopia: Whistler’s Celebration of Food & Wine - November Cowichan Wine & Culinary Festival - September Okanagan Wine Festivals - May, October and January Taste: Victoria’s Festival of Food & Wine - July Tofino Food & Wine Festival - June Vancouver International Wine Festival - February/March The whole point of a festival is to celebrate wine, to build appreciation and to rub elbows with people with like interests. Organizers of such events make it easy for you by taking care of all the details. These extravaganzas are jammed with tastings, seminars and dinners, with options to suit just about every pocketbook. You’ll get the opportunity to sample dozens of wines in one setting and be able to converse with the very people who make or market them. If you plan to attend one, get your hand on a festival program prior to your trip and book tickets to events you have your heart set on well in advance. The growing popularity of B.C. wine means many of the more popular events will sell out fast.

Restaurants in British Columbia are in a unique and enviable position when it comes to sourcing food. Ideal growing and farming conditions, coupled with abundant natural resources allow for chefs across the province to easily source regional and seasonal goods. This includes the endless bounty of orchard fruit; earthy wild vegetables like morel mushrooms, asparagus and fiddleheads; wild game like venison, quail and duck; fresh local cheeses; seafood and fish such as salmon, oysters and spot prawns. B.C. is the ideal place to practice the 100-mile diet, as so much is easily and naturally produced within that radius just about anywhere in the province. And a lot of it is organic and sustainable. So whether you decide to splurge on a five-star restaurant, patronize a quaint mom and pop café or pack a picnic basket for a scenic lunch overlooking a vineyard, you can bet you’ll eat well and fell good about it too. B.C.’s restaurants also pay homage to its wines in a way unsurpassed by other wineproducing regions. Just about every establishment you visit will have a solid selection of local wines and display them proudly. The same is true at winery restaurants. While the selection will mostly be limited to their own products, the advantage here is two-fold. First all, the menu is typically built around the wines, showcasing them to their best advantage. Many of the dishes will be infused with the same wine that has been recommended to pair with them – thereby creating the ideal match. Secondly, many winery restaurants have picturesque settings with unstoppable views of mountains, lakes or vineyards. While you are permitted to bring your own wine to restaurants, the fine dining rooms in B.C. will often have an exclusive selection of rare local products you might not be able to find anywhere else. Always ask about the special – typically it will feature the freshest, in-season ingredients and represents good value. Instead of opting for a litre of the house wine – which often has the greatest mark-up – check out the by-the-glass selections of premium wines. You might drink less, but you’ll enjoy it more. If you order a bottle of wine, but don’t finish it – ask the server to re-cork it and take it with you! British Columbia Wine Tour Handbook

Bringing Wine to a Restaurant Last year, liquor laws in British Columbia were changed allowing consumers to bring their own wine to restaurants. It’s great news for visitors to B.C. wine country because now they can pick wine up on their travels and drink it with an impeccably prepared meal where it will truly shine. But there are things you should know before you go: • Restaurant participation is voluntary, so call in advance to make sure the establishment allows it. • Expect a corkage fee. BYOB isn’t about saving you money. It’s about further enhancing the dining experience, such as bringing in a special or aged bottle of wine to celebrate a milestone or occasion. The fee will vary wildly as restaurants are permitted to set their own rate. It can be as little as $10 at one location and as much as $65 at another. • Expect to pay extra for large format bottles – You won’t beat the system by bringing a jug, box or large format bottle. You’ll likely be charged based on total volume. • Offer a taste to the server or sommelier – It’s the polite thing to do and knowledgeable staff will be able to make recommendations based on the wine.

Fun With Food & Wine Pairing Wine with Popcorn This is a no-brainer. All that buttery goodness calls for a wine of the same vein, so look for a bottle with some sur lie barrel aging - Chardonnay. You want something that has some lovely cream and toast character backed by good acidity for balance and to freshen up the palate after a handful of this buttery, salty snack. So splurge a little and bypass the cheap, flat, flabby wine in a box. Kick your popcorn up a notch by blending in a tiny amount of truffle oil in your melted butter. Pairing wine with Tacos Soft corn tortillas filled with blackened cod or tilapia, onions, green tomato salsa, avocado and cilantro are an upscale, delicious and healthful alternative to t h e ground beef and cheese version, but are still super simple. Select a crisp Sauvignon Blanc loaded with lemon and mineral character. Pairing Wine with Potato chips Many people have a real weakness for salty snacks. And at the top of the list of go-to foods in this vein is a bowl of potato chips. Crack a bottle of dry sparkling wine and you have the ultimate guilty treat. The lovely effervescence in bubble naturally quenches and cleanses the palate after loading it up with all that potato chip sodium. Yum. Wine and Pizza Bypass the grease of delivery and cardboard texture and taste of frozen and hit a local deli for fresh, handmade pizza dough and a variety of lovely sauces, meats, veggies and cheeses. Start with a simple red sauce, buffalo mozzarella, roasted tomatoes and fresh basil and maybe add some peppers, mushrooms and a spicy Italian sausage. Think red, but choose something light, bright and earthy. An Italian varietal like Sangiovese is a natural choice. Wine with Mac & Cheese This is a classic comfort food and just about everyone has some kind of family or “go-to” recipe they swear by. For a home-baked dish featuring a sharp cheddar, with perhaps a touch of garlic and fresh herbs, a lovely Pinot Noir would be a classic combination. But If it comes out of a box – and there are plenty of you Kraft Dinner fans out there – Pinot will kill it. Think super light and bright like Chasselas, which will class up a bowl of KD.

Settle in to British Columbia Predator Ridge Resort
by Julianna Hayes
It’s no coincidence that British Columbia is filled with people who started out “someplace else.” Once they discover B.C., whether they’re visiting or just passing through, the place leaves an indelible mark. That often germinates into the fantasy: How do I get back here? Could I live here? It comes as no surprise. They don’t call it “Beautiful British Columbia” for nothing - it’s one of most desirable places to live in Canada. In fact, Vancouver was voted the third most livable city in the world. That’s no small accomplishment. Imagine, if you will, waking up to a vineyard view, or having a golf course, lake, mountain or ocean in your front or backyard? You could choose to reside in a thriving metropolis, or select any of the several mid-size cities that offer all the amenities, but still maintain their small town appeal. There are also numerous quaint towns and villages in which to set your roots - places where community living thrives - where your neighbours are also your friends. But if privacy is key, you can also still find that secluded acreage in B.C.’s backcountry, or places so remote, even Google hasn’t heard of them. Residential options range from contemporary, urban facilities to remote country settings, luxurious waterfront developments to scenic snowy getaways high in B.C.’s mountainscapes. There are opportunities to settle among the vineyards or along the countless golf courses, which pepper B.C.’s landscapes.
