to Orbis Schools
At Orbis Schools we believe that each young person makes a unique and valuable contribution to our schools and residential communities and we make sure that they are each respected for what they can do and who they are, rather than focusing on what they can’t currently achieve.
We understand that the involvement of parents or carers is vital in supporting the progress of every child and young person. This involvement is ensured by our family friendly open-door policy where our aim is to offer parents or carers progressive support and advice, whether that’s at a parents evening or over a cup of tea.
We ensure that our pupils are supported to access learning opportunities in a way that takes account of their unique learning style and the impact of their ASC in terms of structure, resources and visual and communication support. We also offer a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum that meets the needs of our pupils – tailored to be child centred, specialised and personalised. All of our schools’ education delivery is based upon current research and documented best practice, giving us a range of approaches that can be tailored to each individual’s assessed needs.
I hope that you enjoy reading this guide and visiting our website at www.orbisschools.co.uk. You are welcome to contact us directly to learn more about what we offer or to arrange a visit to one of our locations, so that you can experience the supportive and unique environment that we aim to foster in each of our schools.

Education &
learning
Upon admission, a baseline assessment is undertaken and used in conjunction with pupils’ statements of special educational needs to develop individual learning and placement plans. These person centred plans detail pupils individualised academic, leisure and therapy programmes and highlight areas of ability and need as well as personal aims and aspirations. This information is then used to form meaningful goals and realistic outcomes. Our education, care and therapy staff work with pupils and their families to develop these outcomes and continually evaluate and record progress. Multidisciplinary working ensures that staff maintain a consistent approach across the young person’s waking day. Supporting pupils to identify and evaluate their own progress and achievements enables them to take ownership of their learning and make important choices about their futures.
Broad, balanced, differentiated and relevant curriculum Orbis Schools are registered with the Welsh Government as residential homes for children with an ASC. Pupils have access to a full range of curriculum subjects for Key Stage 2, 3 and 4 with opportunities to access nationally recognised qualifications, where applicable. Following assessment the child or young person’s curriculum is constantly reviewed and adapted to reflect the changing needs of the individual as they gain greater skill development. This ensures that each child and young person is given the opportunity to reach their maximum potential. Where applicable, pupils are given the opportunity to study in local community colleges with flexible support provided by Orbis Schools staff, to ensure that personal interests are accounted for. There is a strong emphasis at Orbis Schools on a multi-professional approach to teaching and learning. We use a wide range of recognised programmes to support learning including aspects of TEACCH, ABA and Makaton.

The
Campus Tˆy Coryton House was built in the early 1900s by Sir Herbert Cory, of John Cory & Sons Shipping at the height of the business’s success when Cardiff was exporting 10 million tonnes of coal a year. Tˆy Coryton is set in extensive parkland just over 3 miles from Cardiff city centre in the vibrant suburb of Whitchurch Village and offers all the facilities and connections to the local community that young people could wish for. At the heart of the village is a shopping street where popular high street chains rub shoulders with the local butchers, bistros and cosmopolitan cafes. Tˆy Coryton offers both indoor and outdoor activities, increasing the sense of community and safety for all our children and young people.
The school’s classrooms benefit from traditional design, merged with low arousal spaces for pupils who may have difficulties accessing learning. These flexible spaces allow for all pupils to be fully included in group activities, whilst supporting their specific individual needs. Our residential building is divided into separate communal flats with each floor having separate bedrooms and a kitchen and lounge area, which provides opportunities for developing and maintaining meaningful life skills. Young people are encouraged to take an active role in personalising their own bedrooms and their collective communal space. We take pride in the maintenance and upkeep of all our buildings and grounds, and have a maintenance team to ensure that Tˆy Coryton always looks its best.

“
At Tŷ Coryton our emphasis is on teaching and learning activities based around the National Curriculum and focussed on every pupil reaching their full potential.” Individual learning opportunities are delivered through a wide range of teaching styles in an ASC specific, supportive environment. The education team are dedicated to working in a multidisciplinary approach ensuring an holistic ethos to delivering learning experiences which capture the imagination of each individual, whilst addressing all areas of their additional needs. The formal classroom environments embrace many of the specific approaches needed to overcome communication and language barriers, providing structure and routine, and these support our rewards based curriculum. This enables pupils to understand expectations, reduce anxiety and maximise opportunities for all pupils to contribute their views within a social context.
Pupils are offered opportunities to gain accredited qualifications and awards alongside gaining important everyday life and independence skills, essential skills, developing their creativity and accessing leisure activities. Skills learnt through our formal education activities are carefully developed to be transferable into everyday tasks within the wider community. Activities such as money management and social interaction skills are initially introduced in the classroom environment and then shared with residential staff and pupils’ families to ensure that our young people can gain independence and confidence in many settings.

What happens after school? This is a question that is often asked by our students and their families. Many young people with autism can and do thrive and succeed when supported to access enriched meaningful educational programmes that are based on their personal needs and interests. Whilst Orbis Schools provide the critical school based education, post-16 further education options are essential to supporting young people with autism into work and into community living as part of their transition into adult life. Both of these outcomes benefit society as well as the individuals and their families.

FAQs
Q. How do I get access to Orbis Schools?
You are welcome to contact Orbis Schools for further information. You should then contact your Local Education Authority if you wish to consider a placement at one of our schools for your child. Q. Can I view Orbis Schools on a no obligation basis?
Yes, please contact our Placements Co-ordinator directly, who will discuss the reason for your visit with you and arrange a suitable date for you to visit the school/home, where you will be able to meet staff and students/residents Q. Do you charge for assessments?
No, our assessments are free.
Q. How are placements funded?
Placements at schools and children’s homes such as ours are usually funded by a combination of Local Authority (Local Education Authority and Social Services) and Local Health Board contributions, Social Workers and Social Services Q. My child has extremely challenging behaviour. What provisions would there be for her/him?
By developing our awareness of any particular child’s habits, likes, dislikes, etc. we seek to avoid, as far as possible, situations which can cause distress and lead to incidents. Our staff are trained to deal with and understand challenging behaviour.
Q. What are the visiting arrangements for parents and families? Will my child be allowed to come home?
We welcome and understand that maintaining contact with families is paramount. We don’t discourage family from ‘dropping in’, however to avoid the distress that changes in routine can cause to people on the autistic spectrum, we find that a little notice so that we can plan with the young person is often helpful.
Q. How do you decide what activities and schooling methods are best for each child?
All of our pupils have timetables designed to meet their individual educational needs and to encourage the development of life skills and independence. Parents/carers are encouraged to become involved with us in the planning and review of the programmes for their children.
Q. My son is very protective about his possessions – would he be able to bring them with him?
We encourage each young person in our residential home to personalize their living space with the aim of creating a home from home environment.
Q. How much feedback on progress would I get?
We actively encourage regular contact. There will be regular review meetings where progress and planning can be discussed. We will also provide updates on a daily or weekly basis for families about their children’s well–being and the activities that they have been involved in .
Q. My child has a health condition. What are your medical facilities?
All of our staff are trained to provide a high level of care. Where there are specific medical needs, these will be discussed and planned for prior to a child joining us as there is no onsite nursing provision.
Q. How do you ensure a healthy living programme for children and young people?
Although we recognise that many of our children and young people will have very definite views and habits in relation to their eating routines, we will seek to ensure that a balanced and healthy diet is provided for everyone. This will be discussed with families prior to a child starting with us.
