We now wish to play a modest role in preserving our planet, as well as the heritage of collectables, so future generations may enjoy both. We insist that our printers source all paper used in the production of Spink catalogues from FSC registered suppliers (for further information on the FSC standard please visit fsc.org) and use inks containing no hazardous ingredients. We have further requested that they become registered with the environmental standard ISO140001. STAMPS ARE SO GRADED EITHER BY REASON OF GENERAL APPEARANCE OF IMPERFECT CENTERING OR A FAULT.

At all times any faults such as a crease, tear, thin spot, etc. will be specifically described. In collection lots and balances the condition described is meant to indicate the overall average to be found. Examples above and below the condition listed can be expected. Typically we do not describe minor perforation separations on blocks or sheets as these are quite normal and are not grounds for their return. In regard to covers, torn or partially missing black flaps, light filing folds and small edge tears, unless they affect the adhesive or markings, are not justification for the return of a lot.

ESTIMATES If an Estimated cash value is given, it is shown in the descriptions with the abbreviation “Est.” Estimates, which are in United States dollars, are used when a lot is large or when it is not listed in the standard catalogs. Our estimates are typically conservative and the lots invariably realize in the estimate ranges or higher.

She was certified by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses from 1986-1995 and worked as a surgical intensive care nurse in the post-operative cardiovascular intensive care unit. She was associate administrator of Florida Medical Center, a 459 bed hospital in Ft. Lauderdale from 1982-1993 and currently serves as executive director of Florida Medical Services. Joanne is also a faculty member at the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies and teaches nursing students in the clinical simulation laboratory. She recently completed her doctoral studies at the University of Miami and was awarded the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree in December 2013. He is board certified in diagnostic radiology and has served as director of radiology at Florida Medical Center since 1979. In 1988, he was appointed a member of the Florida State Board of Medicine by the governor and confirmed by the senate. During his eleven years on the board, he served two terms as chairman. The Board of Medicine licenses physicians to practice medicine, disciplines physicians when there is a violation of the state statutes, and writes the rules governing the practice of medicine. Dr. Edward Dauer has been a member of the University of Miami Board of Trustees since 1996 and is currently a member of the executive committee. He is also a full time faculty member with the title of research associate professor of biomedical engineering, radiology, and family medicine at the University of Miami. He teaches and does research in electron microscopy, radiation biology, radiation physics, and physiology. Joanne and Ed would like to thank Sonny Hagendorf of Columbian Stamp Company for his many years of guidance and expertise in putting together the collection as their exclusive agent. He consistently sought out only the highest quality material and hand selected every stamp in the collection.

1860 Five Cent Brown Charles Connell Issue The Finest Example We Have Ever Offered

13 13

(★)

#5, 1860 5c Brown Connell, an especially handsome and choice unused example of this sought-after rarity, being particularly well centered and boasting completely intact perforations all around (most of the existing copies have significant perforation damage, either due to scissor separating or from having been roughly pulled apart), rich color and crisp impression on fresh white paper, very fine; clearly one of the finest condition examples extant among a population of perhaps no more than 50 or 60 copies; signed Bloch and accompanied by 1979 Friedl certificate (Unitrade C$18,000.00).

The 1860 Five Cent Connell issue of New Brunswick is one of philately’s most “infamous” stamps. The stamp was prepared at the request of Postmaster Charles Connell, who decided to use his own portrait on this value, the most commonly used value of the period, instead of Queen Victoria’s portrait. This vain decision was so egregious that it offended the sensibilities of virtually everyone at the time resulting in Connell’s removal as the Postmaster. The stamp was immediately withdrawn from circulation before any were issued. Very few examples exist of this fascinating stamp, and those that do are invariably found with creases, thins and most often perforation faults. Sound examples are extreme rarities. (photo)

1851 Six Pence Slate Violet on Laid Paper One of the Finest Unused Examples Extant

43 43

(★)

#2, 1851 6d Slate violet on laid paper, a stunning unused single boasting exceptional physical characteristics, including possessing lavishly large and even margins all around, plus its color is wonderfully fresh and the impression is highly detailed on crisp clean paper that shows its laid lines well, extremely fine; it is doubtful that a larger margined unused 6d laid paper could be found as only for mint singles and are pair are recorded; 1986 Greene Foundation certificate (Unitrade C$60,000.00).

The 1851 Six Pence issue on laid paper is one of Canada’s rarest and most difficult mint stamps. Very few examples exist unused, let alone with margins as large as those on the copy offered here. Fewer still exist completely sound. To find one that possesses both oversized margins and is completely without faults is next to impossible. In fact, a thorough review of past famous name sales of important Canadian stamps reveals only one other example which competes with this remarkable stamp, that being the part o.g. example we offered as part of the William H. Gross collection that realized $65,000.00 hammer in 2009. (photo)

1851 Twelve Pence Black on Laid Paper Rare Sound Used Example

44 44

â??

#3, 1851 12d Black on laid paper, a most presentable sound used example of this coveted classic rarity, three generous margins, fourth at left clear to cutting outer frame line towards the bottom, strong color and impression, bold centrally struck six-ring target postmark, completely free of faults, unlike most examples which are quite defective or heavily repaired, fine; 1994 PF certificate (Unitrade C$80,000.00).

The extreme rarity of this high value is explained by a brief history of the production and usage of this stamp. A total of 51,000 stamps were printed, a mere 255 impressions of the 200 subject plate. By all standards for a regular issue stamp this is a miniscule printing. But the real rarity is seen in that in the short period from 1851-1854 only 1,450 were sold. The unsold remainders were then collected and destroyed. The apparent reason that so few were sold is that there were very few uses for this specific rate, and none of them were common destinations that saw much mail. The Twelve Penny Black of Canada has long been recognized as one the rarest and most desired stamps of the British Empire. Not only have few survived but obtaining quality collectable examples has proved even more difficult. The fragile laid paper was prone to damage and many existing copies have faults of various degrees leaving very few completely sound examples. As with all imperforates, obtaining nicely margined copies is a challenge. (photo)

#37d, 1870 3c Indian red, the very rare perf. 12 Ottawa printing, an incredibly well centered mint example of this elusive and seldom offered stamp, believed to be the finest of the approximately six copies in existence, fabulously well centered (the others are all quite off center), strong distinctive color, part o.g., certificate notes a “surface mark at top center” which is barely visible, however there is a trivial nibbed perf. at lower left which is not noted, still extremely fine; this is only the third example that we have ever offered and is far and away the best centered; a great Canadian rarity that is not available for years at a time; 1984 BPA certificate (Unitrade C$12,000.00). If he/she does so, he/she must pay both the seller’s commission and buyer’s premium. 1. 2.

The placing of a bid constitutes full acceptance of these Terms and Conditions of Sale by the bidder. The highest bidder acknowledged by SPINK shall be the buyer. In the event of any dispute between bidders, SPINK may, at its sole discretion, immediately put the lot up for sale again. SPINK’S decision shall be final and binding upon all bidders. A buyer’s premium equal to 20% of the successful bid price of each lot up to and including $2,000.00 and 15% of the excess bid price will be added to each invoice and is payable by the buyer as part of the total purchase price. All bids are to be per lot as numbered in this catalog. SPINK reserves the right to group two or more lots together and to withdraw, prior to call for bids, any lot(s) from the sale. Bids will be accepted in whole dollar amounts only, and SPINK reserves the right to reject any bid or advance the bidding at its discretion. SPINK may not withdraw any lot after a call for bids has been made with respect to that lot, however, the consignor of the property included in the lot (or any other lot) may bid on and purchase the lot for his/her own account. If he/she does so, he/she must pay both the seller’s commission and buyer’s premium. SPINK may have made advances and loans available to certain consignors and bidders in the sale. SPINK reserves the right to bid on any lot in the sale. Additionally, SPINK may or may not have financial interest in any of the lot(s) in the sale. All sales are strictly for cash, check and bank/wire transfer in United States dollars; However, SPINK will only accept cash payments under $10,000.00. SPINK offers clients the option of paying by credit card (Visa, MasterCard, and American Express only) in United States Dollars for a convenience charge of two percent (2%) for Visa and MasterCard and four percent (4%) for American Express, up to a total of $30,000.00.Credit card payments will only be accepted if (a) the purchase is made by the card holder, (b) any purchased items to be shipped are shipped to the cardholder’s verified billing address, (c) floor bidders present their credit cards and (d) all returns are governed by the terms and conditions of the sale. Payment is due and payable immediately upon receipt of the auction invoice or, if payment is to be made at the auction site, simultaneously with receipt of the purchased items. SPINK reserves the right to void a sale if payment in full of the invoice is not received by SPINK within fifteen (15) days of the date of invoice. A late charge in the amount of the lesser of 18% per annum and the maximum lawful rate will be charged on the invoice total if payment is not received within thirty (30) days of the date of the invoice. All lots are subject to applicable state and local taxes, unless appropriate resale certificates are on file with SPINK. Shipping, handling and administration charges will be added to invoices for lots delivered by mail. All lots will be shipped via U.S. Express Mail to Post Office boxes, via Federal Express to street addresses, and FedEx ground for bulky large lots (in the U.S. only). Purchases shipped via FedEx will not

be covered by SPINK insurance in the event that the buyer has placed a “signature release” on file with FedEx. Buyer will be responsible for total purchase price in the event of loss. SPINK cannot be and is not responsible for the loss of any merchandise shipped outside the United States and therefore insurance on any items to be shipped outside the United States is solely the responsibility of the buyer. It is also the responsibility of the buyer to provide adequate insurance coverage for the items once they are in his/her possession. Risk of loss shall be borne by the buyer following shipment of the items and SPINK assumes no liability for merchandise lost, stolen or damaged while in the possession of a party to whom merchandise has been shipped. For international shipments, all duties/taxes/fees are the sole responsibility of the buyer. In the event a successful bidder fails to pay the charges due, SPINK reserves the right to resell the merchandise and the buyer agrees to pay for the reasonable cost of such a sale including a 10% seller’s commission, and also to pay any difference between the resale price and the winning price of his/her previously successful bid. SPINK reserves the right to require payment in full before delivery of the merchandise to the buyer. Bidder personally guarantees payment, and if a corporation, an officer or principal in the corporation agrees to personally guarantee payment. Title to any purchased items remains with SPINK until all invoices are paid in full. SPINK reserves the right to await clearance of any check used for payment before delivery of any item and a $25.00 charge will be applied for any check that fails to clear. SPINK reserves the right to refuse to honor or reject any bid which, in its opinion, is not submitted in good faith, or, as the case dictates, is not supported by satisfactory references, as SPINK in its sole discretion shall determine. SPINK further reserves the right to ban any bidder from participation in its sales for any reason deemed appropriate in its sole discretion. No minors may participate in any SPINK sales. Bids will be executed for mail bidders at one advance over the next highest bid in competition with floor and/or internet bidders, until the maximum bid is executed for the mail bidder, or until the lot is sold. No buy or unlimited bids will be accepted. No additional commission (except for the buyer’s premium) is charged for executing mail bids. SPINK cannot and does not assume any responsibility for errors made in the amount bid or lot numbers listed, so check your bid sheet and online submission carefully. When identical mail bids are submitted, preference is given to the first received. SPINK may reopen the bidding on a lot under the following circumstances: (a) SPINK has failed to execute correctly a mail bid; (b) A party purchasing the lot on the floor has done so in error; (c) Where a protest is made after the hammer has fallen but before bidding has commenced on the next lot; (d) Where the auctioneer has determined that he/she has overlooked a party still bidding on the

lot but before the calling of the next lot; and (e) At the discretion of the auctioneer. In the event of a dispute, the auctioneer’s decision shall be final. Agents executing bids on behalf of clients will be held responsible for all purchases made on behalf of clients unless otherwise arranged prior to the sale. The same protections applicable to SPINK shall apply to each officer, director and employee of SPINK unless such individual shall be convicted of knowingly and intentionally selling false or stolen goods. The descriptions provided in the catalog are intended solely for the use of those bidders who do not have the opportunity to view the lots prior to bidding. All photographs in the catalog are as accurate as can be reproduced with today’s technology; however, they cannot be relied upon for exact reproduction of color. All bidders who have inspected the lots prior to the auction will not be granted any return privileges, except for reasons of genuineness. It is presumed that all floor bidders have inspected the lots prior to bidding. Therefore, lots purchased by floor bidders are sold “AS IS” and may not be returned. Floor Bidders include those bidders acting as agents for others. Additionally, SPINK reserves the right to describe items differently than the descriptions shown in the catalog should such items be consigned to any future auction. All the lots are sold as genuine. For the purpose of this sale, “genuine” is defined as not faked or forged and SPINK will not knowingly sell any item that has been “repaired’, “restored”, “processed”, “cleaned”, “pressed” or “conserved” in any way without disclosure of such facts to the potential buyer. The following conditions apply to requests for expertization of philatelic items: (a) Mail bidders are asked to advise SPINK of any extension requests at the time of placing their bids; (b) Floor bidders must advise SPINK of any extensions in writing at the time of lot settlement; (c) SPINK will submit all items so requested by successful bidders to the reputable authority of their choice; For United States stamps, the Philatelic Foundation and the Professional Stamp Experts are the accepted authorities. (d) Purchasers of items submitted for expertization must pay as part of the purchase price all charges for expertization, including postage and handling; (e) Purchasers of items to be expertized must make payment in full immediately upon purchase prior to expertizing; Refunds will be made promptly for all sums if in the unlikely event an item is returned with a negative opinion; (f) Requests for expertization of stamps with certificates dated within the last five (5) years of the sale date will not be granted; (g) No lot may be returned due to a certification service grading a stamp differently than the grade stated in the auction description; (h) No lot will be accepted as a return from expertization if the item is indelibly marked as being altered or fraudulent by the expertizing authority; and (i) No lot will be accepted as a return, for any reason whatsoever, including extension returns, after four (4) months from the sale date. Any exceptions to this time limitation must be agreed to in writing at SPINK sole discretion. No lots may be returned without a written request by the successful bidder and the written approval of SPINK. In the unlikely event of returning a lot, SPINK must receive notification of the buyer’s intent within three (3) days of the

Except for lots placed on extension, as per the conditions of Item 18 above, no lots may be returned for any reason whatsoever after thirty (30) days from sale date. Late payment for purchase may, at SPINK option, be considered just cause to revoke all return privileges. If any disputes arise regarding payment, authenticity, or description between the bidder and SPINK, SPINK at its sole discretion, may submit the disputed matter to binding arbitration in New York, NY, to which the bidder, by placing a bid and hereby accepting these Terms and Conditions of Sale, agrees to be bound. Live Internet Bidding at SPINK/Shreves Galleries Auctions Bid from your computer and be a part of the LIVE auction anywhere that you can connect to the Internet. There's NO SUBSTITUTE for following the auction in real time. Live Internet Bidding lets you bid and buy as though you were right there in the saleroom. And it's easy.

The following is a step-by-step guide on registering, setting your internet browser and using the auction bidding interface. Start by following the simple steps to become a registered Live Internet Bidder. Once you've been approved for bidding, you can listen to the auction and place bids with the click of a mouse.

Registering to bid online with SPINK

Live Internet Bidding is managed by Stamp Auction Network http://www.stampauctionnetwork.com.

To bid, you must be registered and approved by both SAN and SPINK/Shreves Galleries To decide what you need to do, choose the description below that best fits you. I've never bid with SPINK nor registered with SAN. Go to stampauctionnetwork.com and click on "Register" at the top. Check the box for SPINK/Shreves Galleries and submit the form with your trade references (please, no family members or credit card companies as references). Once registered at SAN and approved by SPINK for bidding, you're ready for internet bidding.

I've bid through SAN before, but this is the first time I've bid in a SPINK/Shreves Galleries sale. Then you just need to be approved by SPINK . Go to stampauctionnetwork.com and click on "Update Registration" at the top. Your SAN account information will be sent to us for approval (you might be asked for other trade references). Once approved by SPINK for bidding, you're ready for internet bidding.

Log on to the auction for SPINK at stampauctionnetwork.com When you're logged on as a Live Internet Bidder, the bidding interface shows a photo and description of the lot, the current bid (and your bidding status), options for placing competitive bids and buttons with bid increments. • After you click on a bid amount, the auctioneer is immediately notified of your bid. • Retracting a bid is usually not acceptable, so please bid carefully. • If you bid and then decide to stop, the "Pass" button will tell the auctioneer you are no longer bidding. • You can send messages to the auctioneer (for example, a request for extension). • You can track prior realizations from the bidding screen.

I'm a SPINK/Shreves Galleries client, but I'm not registered with SAN, Go to stampauctionnetwork.com and click on "Register" at the top. Check the box for SPINK and submit the form, indicating you are a Spink/Shreves Galleries client. Once registered at SAN, you're ready for internet bidding.

I've already registered with SAN and have been approved by SPINK/Shreves Galleries for internet bidding.

Live Internet Bidding works by allowing registered bidders to observe and place bids. Live Internet Bidding will work with any browser on both PC and Mac operating systems. Before bidding by internet for the first time, we recommend finding a sale in progress and listening to the public broadcast or logging in as a registered bidder. This will help you develop a feel for the sale tempo and bidding interface.

Slow or Lost Internet Connections do occasionally happen. Call us for assistance at (212) 262-8400. If you are uncomfortable with your internet skills, we can offer other bidding solutions. Page 53
